NFL draft 2024: Winners and losers, from J.J. McCarthy to creme pies to Kirk Cousins

wandering studios

We did it, Detroit.

More than two years of NFL draft planning culminated in, well, more than a little weirdness wandering the streets downtown. From purple-and-gold stormtroopers —“SKOL Troopers,” we guess — to countless suits made of NFL-branded fabric to, well, whatever the super fans in the front rows of the draft theater were wearing all weekend, the Motor City spent its weekend cosplaying as the center of the NFL universe.

Oh, and 257 players found out where they’ll be starting their NFL careers, from USC QB Caleb Williams at No. 1 to the Chicago Bears to Alabama safety Jaylen Key at No. 257 to the New York Jets. In all, there were plenty of winners and losers from the weekend; here’s a few that stuck out to us:

City of Detroit

Motown’s week went almost flawlessly — other than a too-full first day, a couple of arrests and a few wind-induced broadcast flubs on Saturday afternoon — complete with a pizza competition (between Detroit-style and NYC-style, of course), a giant rendition of the Tamia Hustle and, most importantly, an NFL draft record for attendance ( 775,000, nearly 30% more than the 600,000 who attended the 2019 draft in Nashville, Tennessee ) that showed just how eager the city is to witness football success. (You’re on the clock, Lions.)

NFL DRAFT HUB: Latest NFL Draft mock drafts, news, live picks, grades and analysis.

The icon of the Lions’ resurgence got even more love with the impromptu “JA-RED GOFF!” chants led just before Thursday’s Round 1 (and the chants that popped up all over downtown during the weekend). He also got to show off his L.A. roots — and his comedic timing — with a starring role in the hype reel for Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop” sequel, “Axel F.” We’re just waiting for next season’s chant: “JA-RED (EXPLETIVE) GOFF!”

J.J. McCarthy

Michigan’s star — arguably the program’s best QB ever, by his college numbers — didn’t go in the top five, as some mock drafts had him, but he did wind up in the top 10, as the fifth of six first-round QBs . The Midwesterner should feel right at home with the Minnesota Vikings, with two games a year against the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions — and right at home throwing to Pro Bowlers T.J. Hockenson and Justin Jefferson, plus up-and-comer Jordan Addison.

Parking lot owners

The pedestrian-only status for most of the main streets in the Central Business District — and the takeover of most of Greektown’s parking lots by draft production crews — made for a bonanza for the surface-street flagwavers, with prices hitting $100 in spots . At that rate, they could actually afford to grab a drink within the draft area.

Lions pass defense

Just in case taking an All-American cornerback (Alabama’s Terrion Arnold) in the first round wasn’t enough, Lions GM Brad Holmes went back to the well with another corner in Round 2, Missouri’s Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (Holmes also grabbed a safety, Utah’s Sione Vaki, in Round 4, but he may play running back instead.) Rookie cornerbacks can be hit or miss — for every Devon Witherspoon or Sauce Gardner (both Defensive Rookie of the Year finalists), there’s a Jeff Okudah (who lasted just three seasons in Detroit as the 2020 No. 3 pick) — but with a defense that ranked 27th in passing yards allowed last season, every bit helps.

TRADER BRAD: 'Let's not mess around:' How Brad Holmes worked his trade magic on Day 3 of NFL draft

Little Debbie oatmeal crème pies

When it came time for the ABC on-air crew to refuel late in Friday night’s broadcast, they passed on Motor City delicacies like coneys or Detroit-style pizza in favor of a Down South staple from Little Debbie. Blame former Alabama (and Michigan State) coach Nick Saban, who reportedly fueled his legendary reign in the SEC with a couple of oatmeal crème pies every morning , and shared the treats with the crew. What, they couldn’t get any Crazy Puffs delivered?

Texas & Washington

Well, we all expected a huge draft class from ONE of the CFP teams in the College Football Playoff, right? It just turned out to come from the soon-to-be-SEC squad from Austin, as 11 Longhorns were nabbed by NFL squads. That’s the program’s most since 1984 and tied for sixth-most in any draft. And then there was the not-quite-yet-Big-Ten squad from the Pacific Northwest; The CFP title game losers sent 10 players to the NFL (including three first-rounders). Of course, the Huskies also lost their head coach to Alabama and their offensive coordinator to the crosstown Seahawks, so that August entry into the Really Big Ten could be a little, uh, rocky.

The Wolverines

Hey, didn’t anyone remember who WON the CFP title game? With great success comes great expectations, and former U-M coach Jim Harbaugh’s belief that his Wolverines would set a draft record for picks from one program — set by Georgia’s 15 in 2022 — wasn’t quite validated; U-M sent only 13 players to the next level. (Though we’ll note that Harbs did his part; his L.A. Chargers nabbed linebacker Junior Colson in Round 3 and wideout Cornelius Johnson in Round 7.) That was still tied for No. 1 this year, and the fourth-most ever, behind Georgia, Ohio State (14 in 2004 and LSU (14 in 2020) — but far short of the 18 players U-M had in March’s scouting combine.

Wait, can the Michigan QB be on both lists? Hey, if the NFL draft can come to Detroit, anything can happen. And so we'll note that it was a bit of a bummer for the state's top prospect not to make an appearance downtown during the weekend. (And no, we're not counting his appearance on the big screen to introduce his national championship teammates before Round 2 on Friday night.) It also stings a bit that his visit to Minneapolis brought a resurgence of his love of hockey — and an ignored phone call from Wayne Gretzky. J.J., we get it: They're the "State of Hockey." But this is Hockeytown .

Kirk Cousins

What about the Spartans? Everyone’s favorite ex-Michigan State QB ( Philadelphia excepted ) was blindsided by Atlanta’s use of the No. 8 overall pick on Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. , just a few weeks after Cousins signed a $180 million deal with the Falcons. Then again, Cousins is still due $100 million guaranteed over the next two seasons, regardless of whether he or Penix is throwing passes for the Dirty Birds — that’s a lot of Crazy Puffs.

For one weekend, at least, we became the (Un)Motor City, with road shutdowns snarling traffic on the outskirts of downtown, and those parking lot costs encouraging footpower over horsepower.

Pizza contests

OK, there was only one of these — on the main stage in the middle of Day 3 of the draft, featuring Mootz Pizzeria + Bar's New York-style 'za vs. Detroit Pizza Bar's, ahem, Detroit-style 'za — but at least we'd finally get an answer to the age-old debate, right? Not so much, even with the Lions' Alim McNeil and New York Giants QB Tommy DeVito judging. Instead, we got this no-decision: "While there was no 'winner,' both local businesses took center stage to show their stuff in front of tens of thousands of fans and both restaurants received high praise by the judges." C'mon, even the NFL at least tries to avoid ties.

Saban haters

There’s still more than a few Michigan State fans sore about the coaching legend’s departure from East Lansing for LSU back at the turn of the century. Hopefully they had their TVs turned to NFL Network, as ABC & ESPN’s coverage of the first two days heavily featured the seven-time national champion’s breakdowns of prospects — a harbinger of his future role on ESPN’s “College GameDay” this fall.

Nothing against Detroit’s NFC North rival — beyond the usual, cheeseheads— but next year’s draft hosts will have a lot to live up to, and a lot less space to fit hundreds of thousands of people into, with the draft set for the area surrounding Lambeau Field beginning April 24, 2025.

College Protests Over Gaza Deepen Democratic Rifts

Scenes of chaos unfolding on campuses across the country are stoking internal divisions and carry political risk as a major election year unfolds.

  • Share full article

A large Israeli flag is waved in the foreground at a protest on a campus. In the background amid a group of demonstrators are Palestinian flags.

By Katie Glueck

Nearly seven months after the Israel-Hamas war began, the demonstrations convulsing college campuses nationwide are exposing fresh tensions within the Democratic Party over how to balance free speech protections and support for Gazans with concerns that some Jewish Americans are raising about antisemitism .

From New York and Los Angeles to Atlanta and Austin, a surge in student activism has manifested in protest encampments and other demonstrations, drawing significant police crackdowns and sometimes appearing to attract outside agitators. The protests also have emerged as the latest flashpoint in the internal Democratic debate over the war.

As scenes of campus turmoil play out across the country in the final days of the school year , the moment also carries political risk for a party that has harnessed promises of stability and normalcy to win critical recent elections, and faces a challenging battle for control of the government in the fall.

“The real question is, can the Democrats again portray themselves as the steady hand at the helm?” said Dan Sena, a veteran Democratic strategist. “Things that create national chaos like this make that harder to do.”

Mr. Sena and other Democrats have argued that Americans have good reason to associate their opponents with chaos: Former President Donald J. Trump faces multiple criminal cases ; the narrow, fractious House Republican majority has its own divisions concerning Israel and free speech; some Republicans have urged National Guard deployments to college campuses; and for years, Republicans have faced criticism over antisemitism in their own ranks .

But since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, and the Israeli military response that has killed more than 30,000 people, according to local authorities, the fight over American policy toward Israel has been especially pronounced on the left .

Most Democrats say they both support free speech and condemn antisemitism, and consider criticism of the Israeli government to be fair game. But in seeking to address an intractable conflict marked by competing historical narratives, debates over how to distinguish between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitic speech are fraught and reaching a fever pitch on campus.

To some lawmakers who have visited encampments and attended demonstrations, the students are part of a long tradition of campus activism, and their free speech rights are at risk. Incidents of antisemitism, they say, do not reflect a broader movement that includes many young progressive Jews.

Representative Greg Casar of Texas went to the University of Texas to show solidarity with demonstrators, linking their activism to that of students who opposed the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

“So often, history ends up vindicating those who call for peace early,” he said. “I do think that more and more members of Congress will start to show up at these events and start to hear out more and more of where the students are coming from.”

Asked about instances in which demonstrators around the country have used antisemitic language, Mr. Casar replied, “those people suck.”

“They’re not a part of the peace movement,” he said. “Anybody that’s motivated by hatred — be it racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, hatred of any form — they’re not peaceful.”

But to other Democrats, instances of intimidation and harassment described by some Jewish students are a defining feature of the campus movement.

Nowhere have those tensions been more clear than at Columbia University, which has become both an epicenter of the protest movement and a focal point for its detractors.

Democrats including President Biden , House and Senate leaders and prominent Senate candidates such as Representatives Adam Schiff in California and Ruben Gallego in Arizona have condemned antisemitic harassment around Columbia.

Other Democrats have sought to show solidarity in person with Jewish students who have described feeling unsafe. Representative Jared Moskowitz, a Florida Democrat, recently visited the campus with several other Jewish lawmakers.

Some in his party, he said, were downplaying the hard-line nature of some of the demonstrations.

“There are people who are peaceful, and there are not,” he said. “But there’s a denial from my friends on the left,” a view that “‘everyone’s peaceful, there’s no antisemitism.’”

He declined to name names, though he and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have sparred on social media . Ms. Ocasio-Cortez of New York, one of several progressive lawmakers who have visited the Columbia encampment, has also condemned “horrific people wandering outside” Columbia’s campus who espouse “virulent antisemitism.”

But broadly, Mr. Moskowitz argued, some on the left who rightfully criticized antisemitic chants from “white, Aryan-looking men with tiki torches” rallying in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 seemed reluctant to denounce threatening speech when it came from liberal-leaning Americans.

“I don’t see the same level of outrage,” Mr. Moskowitz said. “It’s politically inconvenient now.”

Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, a long-serving Jewish member of Congress, has also expressed concerns about antisemitism. But he said his party was consistent in calling out bigotry, in contrast to many Republicans, pointing to Charlottesville. (Mr. Moskowitz shared that assessment about Republicans.)

“Democrats are willing to call out antisemitism, wherever it is, and certainly there’s been some antisemitism on campuses,” Mr. Nadler said, though he questioned how representative the demonstrations were of the student body.

Lauren Hitt, a spokeswoman for Mr. Biden’s campaign, said that “while Donald Trump stood proudly with white supremacists and encouraged violent crackdowns on peaceful demonstrators,” Mr. Biden defends the First Amendment and has “strengthened protections against antisemitism and Islamophobia.”

In Georgia, where demonstrators at Emory University were subdued forcefully , State Representative Ruwa Romman said that “there is no room for antisemitism in this movement.”

But she warned against focusing on a “few agitators” over the “thousands of students who are welcoming, who believe in a multiracial, multicultural, multi-faith world.”

“When we lose young people, we’re not just losing at the ballot box,” said Ms. Romman, a Democrat who is Palestinian. “We’re losing them in the entire electoral apparatus.”

In the meantime, some Republicans are seeking to paint the whole Democratic Party as extreme and overly attuned to concerns of Ivy League protesters.

Democrats “are demonstrating that they’re listening to a very small, very radical, very online segment of their base that is not representative of the broader electorate,” said Jack Pandol, a spokesman for the House Republican campaign arm, which is selling T-shirts that allude to a profanity aimed at Hamas.

Former Representative Steve Israel, who led the House Democratic campaign arm, said that while Republicans might see a messaging opportunity, it was far too early to determine whether it would be potent come November.

“Campuses generally clear out in summer, the energy on this issue may dissipate and the question will be whether it returns in the fall,” he said. “The answer to that isn’t here. It’s in the Middle East.”

Text description provided by the architects. The official grand opening of a special school, Letovo School , took place in Moscow last September. The assignment entailed a 20 hectare schoolcampus with educational facilities, student housing and school staff housing. The school campus offers extended outdoor sports facilities with a soccer stade, a running track, tennis courts and basketball courts. In addition there is a greenhouse, a treeyard and ample space for wandering and relaxation in the green.

While the architecture and interior of the school were designed by atelier PRO, the landscape design was developed by Buro Sant en Co landscape architecture. Russian firm Atrium Architectural Studio was responsible for the technical execution. In 2014 Atelier PRO had won the international design competition, the construction began mid-2016 and the campus was taken into use by mid-2018.

Letovo Schoolcampus / atelier PRO - Windows, Column

Letovo, a dream come true Letovo School is a special school for gifted and motivated children aged 12 to 17. The idea to create the school came from entrepreneur and philanthropist Vadim Moshkovich: ‘My dream was to offer talented children from all over the country access to high-quality education, regardless of their parents’ financial means. This school makes it possible for them to continue their studies at the 10 best universities in the country or at one of the top 50 universities in the world.’

Landscape-inspired design and shape Located in Novaya Moskva, southwest of Moscow ,the campus sits atop a beautiful plot of land that slopes down to a forest-lined river. Distinctive level variations were applied in and around the school to integrate the architecture into the landscape.

Letovo Schoolcampus / atelier PRO - Windows, Facade

The shape of the large complex brings it down to a human scale for the children: the building appears to dance across the landscape due to its dynamic design. Due to the perspective effect one only ever sees part of the building's full size when walking around, which gives the impression of a refined scale. The building’s contours and flowing curves create surprising indoor and outdoor spaces as well.

Letovo Schoolcampus / atelier PRO - Chair

The heart of the school: the central hub The central hub is the place where day-to-day life at the school unfolds. This flexible, transformable space will be used throughout the day as an informal meeting place. The dance studio on the ground floor can be transformed through a few simple adjustments into a theatre with a stage, a cosy living room or an auditorium that can accommodate 1,000 people for special events such as graduation ceremonies and large celebrations, as seen at the grand opening. This central hub connects the building’s three wings: the art wing, the south wing with science- and general-use rooms and the sports wing

Learning environment with a diversity in working spaces Letovo envisioned an innovative and modern take on existing education in Russia. In the spatial design, this perspective translates into space for theoretical education as well as special areas for group work and independent study in the tapered building wings. In the library wing there are silence spaces workshop spaces and a debating room. These are all supportive to the student’s personal development.

Letovo Schoolcampus / atelier PRO - Image 13 of 36

Sports programme In addition to the extended sports outdoor facilities, the indoor supply of sports facilities is substantial. These cover fitness rooms, martial arts rooms, a swimming pool, a small and a large sports hall. Around the sports hall there’s an indoor running track which can be used throughout the year. It is available to school staff and external users as well.

Letovo Schoolcampus / atelier PRO - Image 14 of 36

The interior, also designed by atelier PRO, is tailored to the aims of the ambitious programme. The design of the interior also focuses extensively on the various spaces where students can go to chill and meet up with friends. The extreme cold in this area makes the school’s indoor atmosphere important for relaxation.

Ambitous learning environment The Russian client has established a private, non-profit school which aims to be the most prestigious school in the country and to offer the best educational programme through a Russion and an IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. Students’ personal development is paramount, with the school adopting a holistic approach. It is a true learning environment that provides scope for a range of disciplines, areas of interest and recreational opportunities to foster children’s development. This aim is supported by the campus facilities and functions.
