Why Kenmare Is The Perfect Irish Town

Kenmare

Kenmare is probably my favorite Irish town.

What makes it so wonderful?

And where the hell is it?

Kenmare is located in County Kerry south of Killarney National Park — and that damn tacky touristy town of the same name.

The park is gorgeous and worthwhile. The town is to be avoided at all cost (my opinion).

Anyway…

So if you look at the map you can see that Kenmare makes a great base for exploring Killarney National Park and the surrounding mountains. It makes a fabulous place to start your Ring of Kerry drive — or end it.

And it makes a perfect spot to make the Beara Peninsula drive.

So Kenmare has the perfect location for exploring some of Kerry’s gems.

Not to mention that it sits on the water and has more mountains to the south — the Caha Mountains — which are more in County Cork.

Sizeable town

I love little villages like Dunfanaghy up in Donegal or Schull in Cork.

But they’re pretty small — more villages than towns which is fine when I want a quieter place.

Kenmare is a bit larger and has more to it.

So if want more options — restaurants, shops, markets — then a town the size of Kenmare is perfect.

Bridge Street is a quiet lane with a couple of nice shops.

Crossing the bridge and the stream…so lovely and peaceful!

Places to stay in Kenmare

There are loads of accommodation in Kenmare — hotels, guesthouses, B&B’s and even rooms above some of the pubs right in town.

And you’ll find all budgets catered to as well.

I stayed in Abbey Court this last time and it’s a fabulous B&B on the edge of town (still within walking distance with a nice sidewalk to walk on).

Rockcrest is another B&B I’ve had clients stay in with happy results.

I love that there are many options and in different places around town.

Kenmare

My B&B sat back this lane. Quiet, peaceful spot and a nice B&B.

So many pubs, so little time

This was my third trip to Kenmare and I don’t think I realized just how many pubs there are here. It’s a bit mad but I love it!

There is a pub for everyone.

Some are more frequented by locals and some are more inhabited by the tourists.

And some are a bit nicer and some are more typical of a good old Irish pub.

One of my favorites is the Coachmans. It tends to draw in more locals.

But I also like PF McCarthy’s and Foley’s.

It seems that every other store front is a pub.

Kenmare

There are a few pubs on this street!

And with all those pubs does come music.

There’s a fantastic music scene in Kenmare with music many nights of the week starting in spring and through autumn.

I’ve heard some talented musicians in this town.

And this guy below?

I saw him in 2010 with my parents and again on this trip.

Now he has a reputation for being a bit conceited. But he is outstanding!

There is a golf course right in town if golf is your thing. And there are a few more nearby.

The Kenmare harbor provides some boating opportunities.

Both the Kerry Way and the Beara Way — long distance walking trails — come through here.

I saw cyclists galore around.

Killarney National Park and its surroundings offer loads of hiking , angling and lake kayaking.

The Caha Mountains — just to the south — also offer great cycling and hiking .

It’s a wonderful base for exploring the great outdoors of Kerry and a bit of northern Cork.

Keeping it real

I think for me what is so special about Kenmare is that it feels more real and more authentic than some other towns in Ireland.

The locals are hanging out with the tourists.

And while there are tourists in Kenmare, there aren’t typically hoards of them — especially at night.

There aren’t tons of souvenir shops or other kitchy places.

You see more everyday stores that remind you that you’re in a real Irish town.

And for me this is the best thing about Kenmare.

I’ve already written up the wonderful visit I had to a traditional Irish farm while here, but there are so many cool things to do in Kenmare that the town deserves its own post.

Where to Stay in Kenmare

Ireland - Kenmare - Sheen Falls Lodge

There are lots of cute hotels and B&Bs here, so choosing where to stay in Kenmare depends on your budget and travel style. I’m including a recommendation for Kenmare hotels and hostels for each of the following budget categories:

  • Budget:  A room in a hostel, usually $25-35 USD per night for a dorm bed or under $70 for a double.
  • Mid-range:  Around $75-125 USD per night
  • Luxury : Around $150 per night or more

Budget:  Ireland is no budget destination, but the hostel dorms at  Kenmare Failte Hostel  are affordable compared to the rest of the island. You can stay in the mixed dormitory or reserve a private room for two. The hostel has free wifi and communal kitchens to help keep your travel costs down.  Check the pricing, reviews, and availability here.

Mid-Range:  For an affordable, yet elegant stay in Kenmare, pick the three-star  River Meadows B&B .  I love staying in Irish Bed and Breakfasts because they are renowned worldwide for their coziness and welcoming hospitality (plus those Full Irish Breakfasts)! River Meadows gives the traditional Irish B&B experience and also boasts beautiful scenic views.   Check the pricing, reviews, and availability here.

Luxury:  For a complete Kenmare luxury vacation, stay at the five-star   Sheen Falls Lodge  which is located on a huge green acreage complete with its own waterfall (hence the name Sheen Falls Lodge). The rooms are gorgeous, and there is also a separate house you can book if you want more privacy. The hotel has an on-site spa, gym, and indoor swimming pool.  Check the pricing, reviews, and availability here.

Best Things to Do in Kenmare

Now that you’ve settled in on your accommodations, it’s time to decide which Kenmare activities you want to include on your trip! Here are my favorite things to do in Kenmare, plus a few extra ideas for the more adventurous.

Explore Kenmare Bay

Ireland - Kenmare - Bay of Kenmare

Kenmare Bay is gorgeous. While I didn’t love being there so early in the morning, it was wonderful to see the bay shrouded in the light of the early morning. You can come here to enjoy it peacefully, or you can be more adventurous and scuba dive in Kenmare Bay.

You can book your dive through Kenmare Bay Diving, which operates dives for all levels from beginner through expert starting at the beginning of May through the beginning of October.

See the Kenmare Bay Seals

Ireland - Kenmare - Seals at Kenmare Bay shutterstock_672628873 copy

This was my preferred way to experience Kenmare Bay – on a Seafari! The cruise took us through Kenmare Bay to see the seals, and our tour guide explained what everyone needed to do on the boat to make sure we didn’t scare the seals away (hint: be very, very, very quiet and still).

The cruise in early October was brisk, so we were happy to have layers to keep us! Something else that kept us warm? They served everyone a little Irish coffee at the start of the trip!

Ireland - Kenmare - Bay of Kenmare Sealfari Stephanie

Even though I’ve spent a ton of time in Ireland and have been all over the country, I have to say that seeing the seals in Kenmare Bay is one of my most treasured Irish memories. If you’d like to see these majestic creatures (okay, adorable creatures) for yourself, you can book your tour through Seafari Ireland .

Molly Gallivan’s Traditional Irish Farm

Ireland - Kenmare -Donkeys at Molly Gallivan's Traditional Irish Farm

Molly Gallivan’s Traditional Irish Farm is an educational working farm in the Sheen Valley near Kenmare. Here you can learn about the Irish Potato Famine, see a famine house, and meet the wonderful family that saved the farm from being destroyed. You’ll also learn the fascinating history of Molly Gallivan and her poutine (Irish Moonshine) business.

Molly Gallivan's Traditional Irish Farm

I wrote up my trip to the farm so I won’t bore you by repeating myself, but if you’re interested in learning more about this fascinating historical place, check out my post on How to Visit a Traditional Irish Farm.

Kenmare’s Colorful Streets

Ireland - Kenmare - Colorful Houses shutterstock_1170490327 copy-2

Kenmare is a colorful town, and one of the must-do Kenmare activities is to give yourself time to just explore the beautiful streets here! Yes, these streets are one of the most Instagrammable places in Kenmare, but they’re also just delightful to see in person! Walk around and appreciate the vibrant hues on display one after the other.

Ireland - Kenmare - Colorful Houses - Canva

If you want to experience a traditional Irish pub or eat a hearty meal, you’ll find great spots all around the town in some of the chicest spots.

Holy Cross Church

Ireland - Kenmare - Holy Cross Church - shutterstock_699569431 copy-2

This nineteenth-century Catholic Church isn’t a must-see per se, but you’ll no doubt notice the church’s beautiful steeple as you walk around Kenmare. If you are interested in the history of the parish, they produced a book to celebrate their 150th anniversary:

Drawing from a wealth of primary sources, this 431 page, hardback book documents Kenmare’s experience of the repressive Penal Laws and the Great Irish Famine, from the misery of which the beautiful edifice of the town’s Holy Cross Church emerged, as a beacon of faith and a gesture towards a brighter future for its people.

The book can be found at Kenmare Bookstore or you can inquire directly with the church.

Muckross House

Ireland - Kenmare - Muckross House - Canva

Located in Killarney National Park about forty minutes away from Kenmare, this is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon outside of town. Here you can experience a nineteenth-century Victorian Irish mansion with a working farm. Visiting the house is by guided tour only, which you can arrange ahead of time . You can also enjoy a meal in the garden restaurant.

Kenmare Lace

Kenmare Lace is a traditional Irish needlepoint lace that was brought to the area by the nuns of the Poor Clare convent who taught the skills to their students. You can learn about the history of Kenmare Lace and even purchase your own at the Kenmare Lace and Design Centre.

Kenmare Farmers Market

If you’re lucky enough to be in Kenmare on a Wednesday, you can take a visit to the Kenmare Farmers Market. Here you’ll find everything from produce to Irish souvenirs to handicrafts and artwork. It’s a great place to go shopping in Kenmare even if all you want to do is peruse the goods instead of buying.

Bonane Heritage Park

Ireland Kenmare Bonane Heritage shutterstock_1098081554 copy-2

If you love history and cultural travel, you’ll be excited to find out that there are 5,000 years of history on display at Bonane Heritage Park. Here you can see a fifteen-hundred-year-old ringfort, medieval dwellings, and famine ruins. Adult tickets are five euros, but if you’re looking for something to do in Kenmare with children you’ll be excited to know that a family ticket is only ten euros in total.

Make Chocolate at Lorge Chocolatier

What’s better than eating chocolate? Making it! (Provided you then get to eat it afterward). This is another great thing to do Kenmare for families since they have separate chocolate-making workshops specifically for kids and families to experience together. They have classes for all levels and interests, just check their calendar to book ahead of time. Of course, if you don’t have time to make it, you can still come here to shop and eat.

Have Afternoon Tea at Sheen Falls Lodge

Ireland - Kenmare - Sheen Falls Lodge Afternoon Tea

I’m not usually an afternoon tea kind of gal, but having tea at the Sheen Falls Lodge  was an excellent (and elegant!) way to spend an afternoon in Kenmare. Tea is served daily from 2 pm until 5 pm, and you can choose to have traditional coffee, tea, or even champagne! If the weather is nice, you can have your tea served with Sheen Falls views. You can make reservations with the hotel for your tea on their website , or you can click here to check pricing and reviews for staying at the Lodge during your trip.

Killarney National Park

Ireland -Kenmare - Killarney National Park shutterstock_1218465295 copy-2

While most people think of staying in Killarney to visit Killarney National Park, the park is actually quite large and just fifteen minutes away from Kenmare at its southernmost point. You can take a day trip to the park and go hiking, explore the park’s castles, or even get out on the water in a canoe or a kayak. The park’s website is quite extensive, so its the perfect place to start planning your time here.

Drive the Ring of Kerry

Ireland - Ring of Kerry - Ladies View

If getting out and hiking (or canoeing) Killarney National Park isn’t your thing, why not drive the scenic (and famous) Ring of Kerry. It will take you through the park and beyond. Like driving anywhere in Ireland, you’ll constantly want to pull over to take pictures of the stunning scenery before you.

The entire Ring of Kerry is 111 miles (about 180 kilometers), and it takes about three and a half hours to drive. Of course, since you’ll be stopping frequently to enjoy different spots along the route, expect it to take closer to five or even seven hours depending on your travel style.

The little town of Kenmare in Kerry dates back to the 17th century when a piece of land was given to Sir William Petty who was completing the mapping of the country.

However, people have been living in the Kenmare area since the Bronze Age. We know this because many artifacts from the area were discovered in this region including one of the largest stone circles in the country.

In Kenmare, many incidents happened during the Civil War including attacks on residents. The town was in the hands of Anti-Treaty forces but was retaken in 1922 by the National Army troops.

Kenmare was the fifth town I visited with my son on a wonderful two-week  Ireland road trip . We began our adventure in  Dublin  and after a few days of exploring the capital and largest city of Ireland, we  drove to Westport . We then visited Clifden for a few days before heading to Galway and then Kenmare.

Located only minutes away from the middle of town, you can enjoy the wonders of nature along the many paths of this peaceful park. 3. Visit The Kenmare Stone Circle

Kenmare Stone Circle

This is one of the largest stone circles in Southwest Ireland. It measures 56 x 49 feet and unlike any other ring in Muster, this one is egg-shaped.

Kenmare Stone Circle plaque

It’s fascinating to think that these Stone Circles were built during the bronze age (2,200 – 500 B.C.) and are believed to be for ritual and ceremonial purposes. The stone circle consists of 15 stones arranged in a circular form with a center stone. This is the only circle to have been found in Kenmare. It is also the only monument of its kind to be situated so close to a town in Ireland.

Kenmare Stone Circle

The rocks used to make the circle are greenstone and brownstone. It’s actually unclear the meaning of the monument, but it is thought that they may be been used for rituals by druid priests. This makes sense since the local name for this monument is “The Druids Circle”.

Other ideas for the use of the circle are that it was a primitive calendar or a burial site. While the exact use is uncertain, what is believed is that the circle holds magic and mystery for all who see it in person.

The Stone Circle is an easy walk from the town center.

Kenmare is a great location to see both the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara. Both are fun excursions and the Ring of Beara is especially easy to do in a day.

15. Ring of Beara

Ring of Beara

For those that like a great day trip, Kenmare offers you the best possible base to go and explore two of Ireland’s most scenic routes. Visitors can head into West Cork and follow the Ring of Beara 140 km scenic drive along the Atlantic coast with ocean views and stops at quaint picturesque villages like Castletownbere and Glengariff.

Ring of Beara

The scenic driving route loops around the Beara Peninsula and you won’t find large tourist buses on this untouched part of Ireland.

The day of our drive was quite misty, especially in the morning.

Ring of Beara

And yes, there are lots and lots of sheep!

Ring of Beara

The Ring of Beara driving route is around 80 miles and definitely easy to do in a day. Without any stops, it would take you around 3 hours, but you’re going to want to stop- trust me!

16. Ring of Kerry

Ring of Kerry

On another day, you might like to take in more stunning views on the famous Ring of Kerry route. This drive takes you up the Molls Gap mountain pass, past the Lakes of Killarney and through Killarney National Park, then around the Iveragh Peninsula back to Kenmare.

The Ring of Kerry route is around 111 miles and takes around 3.5 hours to drive around without stopping. In my opinion and experience, The Ring of Kerry has more traffic as well as tour buses which can add more time to the drive.

17. Molly Gallivan’s Cottage & Traditional Farm

Druid across from Molly Gallivan's Cottage & Traditional farm

Molly Gallivan’s is a great place to stop if you are driving the Ring of Beara. It is located on the Caha Pass between Glengarriff and Kenmare.

There is a cottage, farm, tea house, and gift shop.

Molly Gallivan's cottage

Molly Gallivan’s 200-year-old Cottage & Traditional farm includes 14 places to visit showcasing how it functioned as a working farm over 200 years ago.

Molly Gallivan's Traditional farm

On the farm, you can also visit the ruins of a family dwelling from the era of the Great Famine and a Neolithic Stone Row that forms part of an ancient sun calendar.

Molly Gallivan's farm house ruins

The attraction brings to life 5000 years of history on a walk just a bit more than .25 of a mile.

The story of Molly is that she was widowed with seven small children in the mid 1840’s. She supplemented her meager income from her small mountain farm by opening a “Sibheen” (illegal pub) where she sold homemade “Poitín” (whiskey) locally known as “Molly’s Mountain Dew”.

Molly Gallivan's Poitin

She would sell whiskey, tea, baked goods as well as knitted items to people traveling between West Cork and South Kerry.

Today, the cottage and farm are owned by Stephen and Frances O’Sullivan. The family has preserved and restored the cottage and farm with love and deep care for the history, mythology, and spirituality of the land and Molly’s memory.

18. Uragh Stone Circle

Uragh Stone Circle in Ireland

Another fun day trip is visiting Uragh Stone Circle (Ciorcal Cloch Uragh).

There is a small admission fee to explore the grounds that is found near the parking area and starting point to the walk to the circle.

Uragh Stone Circle road sign

It’s about 10 miles from Kenmare and the drive is about 25 minutes. You must navigate a very narrow road with pull-offs if you meet an oncoming car for about 3 miles of the journey.

The Uragh Stone Circle is an axial five-stone circle located near Gleninchaquin Park, in County Kerry. The Bronze Age site includes a multiple stone circle and some boulder burials.

This circle is set in an incredible valley between two lakes, with Gleninchaquin waterfall as a dramatic backdrop in the distance.  There are also sheep grazing the green hills near the over 4,000-year-old stone circle.

Uragh Stone Circle in Ireland

It’s a truly magical place. The views from the stone circle are stunning and it is a place that tends to draw many back again and again.

As you walk to and from the Stone Circle there are plenty of paths, little bridges and boulders to explore.

Meadow near Uragh Stone Circle

It was so peaceful and you could go to the monument stones without fences and respect the age and the meaning of the circle. Certainly, an experience to always remember.

19. Famine House

Famine House ruins

Also, nearby the Urach Stone Circle are a Famine House, Boulder Burial, Fulacht Fiadh, and picnic area.

Besides the main circle, there is also an upper circle, some distance beyond the famine cottage and farm and up a bit of a climb, but again well worth the effort.

Things to do in Kenmare

A beautiful town located in the southwest of ireland..

With so many things to do in Kenmare, it is easy to see why this quaint town is such a popular destination.

Not only is Kenmare surrounded by the natural beauty that you can spend days admiring and exploring, but the town also has some excellent pubs, restaurants, and other places where you can unwind.

But all that the town offers only accounts for a small part of its appeal; Kenmare’s biggest advantage is its location. Ideally situated on the Wild Atlantic Way, the town allows one to explore the Ring of Beara and Ring of Kerry while setting base in a comfortable and convenient location.

Apart from this, Kenmare is close to several popular towns and attractions, including Killarney (32 km), MacGillycuddy’s Reeks (53 km), Sneem (26 km), and the Caha Mountains (30 km).

Molly Gallivan’s Cottage & Traditional Farm

About 13 km south from Kenmare on the N71 will bring you to Molly Gallivan’s Cottage & Traditional Farm , which is an opportunity to step back in time to the early 1800s and experience life as it was back then.

If you’re anyway exploring the Ring of Kerry , a day trip here has to be one of the many stops you make along the way.

Molly Gallivan’s 2,000-year-old cottage is a fine example of old Irish architecture, with furniture and stone walls on all four sides sitting atop a land of sprawling farms complete with livestock. The step back in time here extends to more than the visual element.

They have an old tea shop on the premises that serves local homemade delicacies. When you are here, why don’t you have a pot of tea with a scone or apple crumble or some homemade ice cream (the honeycomb flavor is delicious).

The evenings here are better yet – they organize the perfect Irish experience, with traditional music, food, and storytelling presented in the old Irish way. You can expect singing, dancing, and a general good vibe all around.

They organize traditional Irish evenings with prior bookings, so give them a call if this is something you’d like to do.

Molly Gallivan’s Cottage & Traditional Farm is a great attraction for visitors of all age groups. It’s scenic, authentic, and interesting; what’s not to like? Quick tip, if you have the time, take a stroll to the top of the hill to enjoy the stunning scenery.

There is a great souvenir shop that offers knitwear and other merchandise at very reasonable prices. There’s no charge for the small farm visit, you can pay whatever you deem fit in the donation box. See my web page on Molly Gallivan’s Visitor Centre here.

Bonane Heritage Park

Those interested in archaeology can’t afford to miss a trip to Bonane Heritage Park , which is only 10 km south on the N71. The 90 sq km park is an archaeological reserve comprising of 250 heritage sites surrounded by the Sheehy and Caha Mountains.

A 2-km looped walkway serves as the access point to the many sites, varying from the Stone Age to the pre-famine era. A local family generously donated the land in the public interest, and local volunteers looked after its upkeep.

The park offers breathtaking scenery of the Sheen Valley. They even have a Fairy Walk, which is a big hit with children and adults alike. There are information boards for all the sites. You will have to wear your walking boots because the hill is quite steep.

Some of Bonane Heritage Park’s must-visit sites include a 4000-year-old Stone Circle, a 5th-century Ring Fort, and a 150-year-old famine house. The Dromagurteen Stone Circle is one of the park’s main attractions as it boasts astronomical significance.

If you’re here during the summer solstice, you really must plan your trip to observe the sunrise and sunset.

Overall, the park’s main attraction is that it covers over 4,000 years of history in a 2-km walk. Experts estimate inhabitants occupied the land continuously till the great famine wiped them out.

Kenmare Bay Water Sports

When in Kenmare, you can enjoy a number of water sports. Several service providers along the bay offer a range of activities, including kayaking, canoeing, and sailing.

If you’re keen on spending a leisure day with the family splashing around in the water, head over to Star Outdoors Kenmare Adventure Centre, which arranges a diverse range of land and water activities. Some of the activities are obviously subject to weather conditions.

You can start your day with a boat ride in the bay, which offers great views of seals lazing on rocks and the overall coastline from a different perspective.

If you’re keen on kayaking, they have inflatables in the water that serve as markers for you to kayak to and back. Grab lunch at the restaurant upstairs, which serves generous portions of delicious, fresh seafood at reasonable prices.

The staff at Star Outdoors are friendly and accommodating; if you have special needs, they’re happy to go out of their way to make sure you enjoy yourself.

The water slide, trampoline, and banana boats are great fun for all age groups. Overall, a trip here is well worth the time and money.

When in Kenmare, you can spend half a day enjoying a game of golf while taking in the beautiful scenery around at either the Ring of Kerry Golf Club or Kenmare Golf Club.

Ring of Kerry Golf Club

The 150-acre course of the rolling countryside at Ring of Kerry Golf Club is reasonably challenging with a great variation of holes. The greens and fairways are well-maintained around the year, and one can enjoy breathtaking views from everywhere on the course.

The green fees are on the higher side here, but the course’s excellent condition more than justifies the price.

T he clubhouse, which showcases the beautiful landscape with an elevated deck and floor-to-ceiling windows, serves lip-smacking delicacies at reasonable prices.

On a sunny day, sit on the terrace to enjoy the warmth, or you can sit upstairs to get a better view of Kenmare Bay.

In terms of what to order, you can’t go wrong with a burger here -it’s huge, juicy, and flavorsome and comes with a side of well-prepared fries. Wash it down with a glass of Guinness for a meal you won’t forget.

Kenmare Golf Club

The 100-year-old Kenmare Golf Club offers a challenge for golfers of all levels at a relatively reasonable price. Its parkland course offers beautiful lake views and is well-maintained. Kenmare Golf Club doesn’t have a restaurant, but you can grab tea or coffee as a refreshment.

Horse Riding

The abundance of natural beauty around Kenmare, makes horse riding a favorite among locals and tourists alike. When in Kenmare, you can try pony trekking & horse riding at Dromquinna Stables, River Valley Stables, or the Eclipse Center.

Dromquinna Stables, which is just 4 km away from Kenmare on the Ring of Kerry is a family-run business and has been operational since 1949. They offer several options depending on the rider’s ability, from 5-hour long rides for experienced riders to mini-treks for children under 8.

If you don’t have a lot of time on your hands, opt for the 1.5-2-hour ride along Kenmare Bay’s coastline. On Saturday mornings, they have an equestrian camp from 10.30 am to 1 pm, and during the Easter and Halloween holidays, they arrange starter camps for kids.

Overall, the experience is well worth it, considering treks start at €45 per person and lessons at €20 per person. I think they don’t accept cards, so don’t forget to carry cash.

Kissane Sheep Farm

The Kissane family has a team of highly trained sheepdogs that are used to manage the flock. You will be amazed at how these dogs respond to commands and how they are able to herd the sheep with such precision and agility.

The Kissane family has been breeding and training sheepdogs for generations, and their expertise is evident in the skill of their dogs.

During the demonstration, you will have the opportunity to watch the dogs in action and learn about their training techniques. It is truly a remarkable experience that you won’t want to miss.

Eclipse Ireland

Eclipse Ireland Activity and Adventure Center , located 15 km from Kenmare, just off the Ring of Kerry, offers the perfect getaway for families and large groups to spend time together, indulging in off-the-beat outdoor activities.

They offer an extensive range of activities to suit everyone’s personal preferences and physical fitness. These include activities such as archery, fishing, kayaking, biking survival camps, raft building, and assault course challenges. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, make sure you try coasteering.

Eclipse Ireland has holiday homes that you can book. The whole getaway is ideal for families and adventurers alike.

The rooms are basic but spacious and spotlessly clean, the food is delicious (the BBQ at night is not to be missed) the service and care to attention are extraordinary – overall, it’s going to be a trip you’re not likely to forget anytime soon.

The best part about the family that owns Eclipse Ireland is they do everything possible so guests enjoy their stay. Even though Eclipse is known for adventure activities, they leave no one out. Everyone’s physical limitations are considered to make sure you have a fun time.

Kenmare Farmers Market

A trip to the farmers market, no matter where you are is always fun and you get the best of local produce and so much more. Kenmare Farmers Market is held every Wednesday in the Square from 10 am to 4 pm.

When you are here, apart from the usual fresh vegetables and fruits, they also have various delicious different types of meats and homemade jams. Other than the food, local artists showcase their artwork like handmade jewelry, pottery, and crafts.

Lorge Chocolatier

Good hand-made chocolates are a rare delicacy, and Lorge Chocolates are among the most delicious. While everyone enjoys good chocolate, not many of us get the opportunity to try our hand at making some – it’s incredibly fun and educational at the same time.

When in Kenmare, visit Lorge Chocolatier to learn how to make chocolates, which is something people of all ages are sure to enjoy.

Lorge has two different types of workshops – a basic one for families and groups and an advanced one if you’re keen on learning more. The basic workshop is quite comprehensive and hands-on for a one-time experience.

Not only do you learn the history of chocolate, but you also get to try different processes, such as dipping, tempering, and molding. You even get to sample different kinds of chocolate and take the labor of your love home with you.

Chef Benoit, who runs Lorge and conducts the workshops, is very knowledgeable and passionate, which makes learning from him a pleasure.

A trip here will take no more than an hour and a half, so it should be easy to work into your schedule. From the price point, most consider it quite reasonable for the experience.

Kenmare Stone Circle

Kenmare is home to one of the largest stone circles in southwest Ireland, which is an egg shape approximately 56 feet by 49 feet.

Composed of 15 boulders in a circle surrounding a Boulder-Dolmen in the center, which rests on three low stones, the Kenmare Stone Circle is estimated to be an impressive boulder burial site from 2000 BC.

A five-minute walk from Kenmare’s centre will bring you to the Stone Circle, but you may not realize you’re here since the place is maintained well enough to be a garden rather than a 4,000-year-old exhibit.

Given its manicured appearance, it’s no surprise the place is known as “the Shrubberies” among the locals.

While today the view around the bronze-aged Stone Circle is mostly fir trees and primed shrubs, the structure originally used to overlook the bay. They even have a fairy tree, where you can hang a card with your wish written on it.

A visit here takes no more than 5-10 minutes unless you’d rather stick around to take more pictures or soak in the majestic beauty.

To reach the Kenmare Stone Circle, turn left by the tourist office at Cromwell Bridge and follow the road. As the road turns left, turn right into a short road that leads to a gate. The land is privately owned, and the owners upkeep the grounds and charge a nominal fee.

Seal-Spotting in Kenmare Bay

If seal spotting is your main interest, opt for Seafari Cruises rather than other boat rides at Kenmare Bay. They offer a seal-watching, eagle-watching, and eco-nature cruise on a comfortable passenger boat. It’s a small business run by Ray and his crewmate Alex.

While many providers offer similar services, Seafari Cruises is a class apart, primarily because of their attention to detail.

From the moment you board, they’re talking to you, cracking jokes, and making sure you have a ball of a time.

Of course, you get to see the seal colony & wildlife as closely as luck will allow, but the whole experience is so much more since you have a great time with their chattiness as opposed to the recorded or memorized information that is given out on other boats.

Places to Eat and Drink

Mulcahy’s Bar and Restaurant : Gourmet food | Expensive | Reservation is a must

The Lime Tree Restaurant : Great food | Expensive | Reservation is a must

P.F. McCarthy’s Pub : Great food | Value for Money | Traditional Irish music

Some other must-visits here include Walks from Kenmare No 35, Tom Crean, Lily House Thai and Chinese, Wharton’s Traditional Fish and Chips, The Horseshoe, and Kenmare Ice Cream.

Walks near Kenmare

Much like any other place in Ireland, you can find many picturesque walkways here that allow for a good trek while enjoying the surrounding natural beauty.

Some of these include Old Kenmare Road, Reenagross Park Loop, Gleninchaquin Park, Gortamullen Circuit, and Knockaunanattin Ridge. Why don’t you put on your hiking boots and tackle part of the Kerry Way?

Does Kenmare have a beach?

No , Kenmare does not have a beach. However, if you’re willing to take a short drive, the nearest Blue Flag Beach is Derrynane , which is about an hour away by car.

So, if you’re looking to soak up some sun and enjoy the seaside, Derrynane is definitely worth the trip!

Which is better Killarney or Kenmare?

It really depends on your preferences! Killarney is definitely a more touristy town with lots of activities and attractions, but it can also be crowded during peak season.

Kenmare, on the other hand, is a peaceful and charming town with a slower pace of life. If you don’t mind driving a bit to get to Killarney National Park (which is worth a visit!), then I would recommend staying in Kenmare for a more relaxed and authentic experience.

However, if you’re looking for more nightlife and entertainment options, Killarney may be the better choice for you

This picturesque town serves as the perfect getaway by itself or as a base to explore the rest of Kerry. From a wide range of entertainment and adventure options to tourist attractions and natural beauty, there’s something here for everyone, no matter how young or old you are.

Spend a couple of days here to do a little bit of everything, or relax for a week, enjoying the hospitality of Irish town life amid breathtaking scenery – either way, you’re bound to love it.

10 Things To Do In Kenmare, Ireland (For 2023)

Categories Kerry , Things To Do

Kenmare is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Ireland. It is part of the popular tourist trail Ring of Kerry. The word Kenmare is an anglicized form of Ceann Mara which means the “head of the sea”.

This is because the town is located at the head of Kenmare Bay where the Roughty River flows into the bay in between Iveragh Peninsula  and the  Beara Peninsula .

This panoramic location of Kenmare is what attracts the tourists into it. There are also lots of awesome things to do in Kenmare aside from admiring its natural beauty.

Kenmare is also more quiet and tranquil than its neighbors – Killarney and Dingle . Although beautiful in their own way, if peace is what you prefer, this town tops our Ring of Kerry destinations.

Cromwells bridge kenmare

This historical bridge was built and paid by Catholic Sir Richard Shireburne to help Protestants cross the river to attend the service in nearby Protestant church.

However, Protestant Cromwell arrived on the north and subdued the Catholics and renamed the bridge after him.

Kilmakilloge is a discovery point in the banks of the Kenmare river. This scenic spot is a good place to just relax and spend quiet time with your family or friends. And it also offers a great place for a picnic.

why visit kenmare ireland

Kenmare (Irish: An Neidín) is a small town in the south of County Kerry, Ireland. The Irish name for the town 'An Neidín' translates into English as 'The Little Nest'. The name Kenmare is the anglicised form of Ceann Mhara "head of the sea", which refers to the furthest point inland reached by the sea. Kenmare is located at the head of Kenmare Bay sometimes called the Kenmare River (An Ribhéar) where the Roughty River (An Ruachtach) flows into the sea, and at the junction of the Iveragh Peninsula and the Beara Peninsula. The traditional Irish name of the bay was Inbhear Scéine from the celtic inver, which is recorded in the 11th Century narrative Lebor Gabála Érenn as the arrival point of the mythological Irish ancestor Partholón. It is also located near the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, Mangerton Mountain and Caha Mountains and is a popular hillwalking destination. The entire area was granted to the English scientist, Sir William Petty by Oliver Cromwell as part payment for completing the mapping of Ireland, the Down Survey in 1656. He laid out the modern town circa 1670. Like William Petty, a previous surveyor of Ireland (1584), Sir Valentine Browne, ancestor of the Earl of Kenmare was granted some lands in County Kerry during the resulting plantation, the Munster Plantation.

However, the area has more ancient roots. One of the largest stone circles in the south-west of Ireland[1] is close to the town, and shows occupation in the area going back to the Bronze Age (2,200-500 B.C), when it was constructed. The circle has 15 stones around the circumference with a boulder dolmen in the centre.

Vikings are said to have raided the area around the town which at that time was called Ceann Mhara, which means "head of the sea" in Irish.

The convent in the town, the Poor Clare Sisters, was founded in 1861 by Sister Mary Frances Cusack, who was also an author and publisher of many books. Under the guidance of Mother Abbess O'Hagan it started in 1864 a lace-working industry and Kenmare Lace became noted worldwide.

A suspension bridge, which is claimed to be the first in Ireland, over the Kenmare River was opened in 1841 and served the community till 1932 when it was replaced by a new concrete bridge.

The town is noted for receiving Ireland's tidiest town award in 2000 and being a runner-up in 2003 and 2008. The Catholic Church in the town contains stained glass from Franz Mayer & Co.

Visit Kenmare, Ireland

  • Accommodation
  • Things to do

Surrounded by glorious mountain views and wooded hills and overlooking the glittering expanse of Kenmare Bay, this little heritage town makes an ideal gateway to both the Ring of Kerry and the less-well-known Beara Peninsula.

Although the name Kenmare derives from the Irish Ceann Mara (Head of the Sea), the town's Irish name Neidín (Little Nest) is a far better description of how the town is cradled by magnificent scenery. It's a tranquil but lively place with vividly painted shopfronts, gourmet restaurants and cheery pubs set along its elegant streets.

A Bronze Age stone circle and boulder dolmen sit just outside the town, while the Kenmare Heritage Centre tells the region's story and its importance as a historic lace-making site.

Most of all though, Kenmare is ideally situated close to the Ring of Kerry. Home to Ireland's highest mountains, this circular route around the Iveragh Peninsula offers coastal scenery, untouched beaches, medieval ruins and a host of traditional pubs.

The lesser-known but equally dramatic Beara Peninsula to the south of Kenmare is another rewarding circular route that brings you into contact with ancient ring forts, Neolithic stone circles, fishing villages and sweeping, panoramic views.

All this coastal and mountain scenery makes Kenmare a popular hub for sailing, kayaking, diving, surfing, cycling and hill walking. The Macgillycuddy's Reeks mountain range is a short distance from the town and contains nine of Ireland's highest mountains, the tallest being Carrauntoohil at 1,040 m (3,412 ft).

There are plenty of trails around the mountains and lakes of the region, passing glens and panoramic viewpoints on routes that suit a wide variety of fitness levels.

The long-distance Kerry Way, a 215 km (134 mile) trail that loops around the lower reaches of the Iveragh Peninsula, takes walkers through some of the most remote and rugged parts of the region. It’s generally walked in an anti-clockwise direction to ensure the best views and passes right through Kenmare, making it easy to pick up the trail for a day walk or a longer journey around its entire length.

Known as the culinary capital of Kerry, Kenmare is a great place to dine. A selection of gourmet restaurants and lively pubs serve high-quality traditional dishes. The well-stocked farmers' market trades on Wednesdays and showcases the best of local produce, including artisanal cheeses, homemade breads and cakes, and a range of fresh fish and seafood.

Kenmare was designated a Heritage Town by Fáilte Ireland and the Kenmare Heritage Centre was offically opened in June 1994 by the then President of Ireland, Mrs Mary Robinson.

The Centre covers various themes including famous visitors to Kenmare, the nun of Kenmare, Kenmare's history and historical sites, the effects of the Great Famine on Kenmare and the Landlords of Kenmare. It also houses an exhibition of Kenmare Lace and there is a model and explanation of the nearby stone circle, which is one of the largest stone circles in the south of Ireland.

An integral part of the experience of the Kenmare Story is to visit the Historical sites after visiting the Centre. The Heritage Trail map will show you at first hand some of the delights of Kenmare. All the sites are within walking distance from the Centre and the trail takes about 40 minutes to complete.

There is ample parking outside the Centre.

why visit kenmare ireland

Rose of Tralee Communities at the Kenmare Bay Hotel

1-677-124-44227, [email protected], why kenmare.

Whether you're interested in moving your home or business [or both] to this beautiful corner of Ireland, the incentives to do so are many.

Living in Kenmare

The immediate attractions of Kenmare and its surrounding area are obvious. Known as the jewel in the Ring of Kerry, it's a beautiful heritage town with a pedigree of 'Tidy Towns' wins to its credit, located amidst some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. Clean, fresh mountain air, the benefits of a small, united, rural community with no traffic pollution and empty roads - even in high season is what Kenmare has to offer. There's little or no crime, access to 12 golf courses and a wide choice of cosy pubs, restaurants, bars and hotels in which to while away time. Within 40 minutes' drive of town is Glengarriff in County Cork, which is a beautifully located village, surrounded by the Caha mountains and facing into Bantry Bay. Forty minutes' drive north of Kenmare brings you to Ireland's most famous tourist town, Killarney with its lakes, mountains, rail connection, commerce and shopping centres. The old road from Kenmare to Killarney via Moll's Gap takes you through Killarney National Park and is a journey through breath-taking scenery which visitors travel across the world to experience. Kenmare residents are lucky enough to have this beauty right on their doorstep.

Kenmare and its surrounding area enjoy quality primary and secondary schools with class sizes condusive to efficient learning. The town also benefits from a very comprehensive adult education centre offering a fine range of courses and activities. It's accessible to centres offering third level education like Tralee and Cork as well.

The town has a good proximity to airports and train services [Cork Airport is 1 hour 20 minutes by road. Kerry Airport is 50 minutes and Killarney train station about 40 minutes]

There are good sporting facilities and amenities in the area including two 18-hole golf courses. Active musical, dramatic and choral groups thrive in the villages and towns in the vicinity as well as in Kenmare itself.

Professional

There's a broad range of professional services available including doctors, dentists, accountants, solicitors and architects.

To sum up, Kenmare offers an excellent quality of life in a cosmopolitan environment amid outstanding natural beauty. The number immigrants of different nationalities that has settled here is testament to the area's appeal and their presence enriches life.

Moving to or establishing your business in Kenmare

When it comes to commerce, Kenmare has plenty to offer the enterprising business. In addition to its spectacular, rural location which provides a rewarding and productive atmosphere in which to work, the town has all the essential systems and resources in place to support competitive commerce.

Cork city and Cork airport are just one and a quarter hours away by road and Killarney is forty minutes. Kerry airport at Farranfore is under an hour and there are constant courier deliveries in and out of Kenmare so it's well linked to other centres of commerce. There are also regular bus services that connect with these conurbations.

There's the availability of ISDN/High speed telephone lines plus proximity to Eircom fibre optic link and full broadband facilities.

As described above, Kenmare enjoys the benefit of an active Adult Education Centre where a comprehensive range of training and life-skills courses are available. Business orientated courses are offered by Skillnets and Fas has an office and representation in the Courthouse building in town.

Human Resources

At the end of every school year Pobalscoil Inbher Sceine, the town's secondary school discharges its Leaving Certificate students with impressive credentials enabling many of them them to commence 3rd level education in Dublin, Limerick, Cork or Tralee etc.

They come back home to Kerry after their university education, highly trained and ready for employment. Members of this potential workforce are available to local business but sadly soon disperse if opportunities are not forthcoming.

A Guide to Kenmare

The beautiful town of Kenmare is a small tranquil country town, famous for its gourmet food and superb accommodation set amidst breath-taking scenery in one of the most unspoilt, natural environments in Europe.

It's located at the head of beautiful Kenmare Bay which stretches 50 kilometres from Kenmare out to the Atlantic Ocean. The name is an anglicised version of Ceann Mara which translates into 'head of the sea' in English. The original Irish name for the town is 'Neidin' meaning ' little nest ' because the town 'nestles' amongst the surrounding mountains which are such a striking feature of the landscape.

Its protected position and proximity to the Gulf Stream mean that the climate which Kenmare enjoys is mild and of course, since we're talking 'Ireland' here..damp. It's unusual to experience extremely low winter temperatures - ice and snow etc., but spring and summer temperatures can be high.

The town itself has a population of around 1,800 (in 2009) and retains the 'village' feel that it's had since it was established as Ireland's first 'planned' town back in 1670. The historical, cultural and environmental significance of the place was officially recognised by Bord Failte [the then tourist board of Ireland] in the early 1990s when it was designated a 'Heritage Town'.

Kenmare town has a unique identity of vibrant coloured, characterful buildings and its inhabitants' pride and concern for the immediate environment has twice resulted in Kenmare winning the 'Tidy Towns' competition - in 2000 and 2008. This is an annual, national event and Kenmare was also a runner-up in 2003. The 'Tidy Towns' awards are accolades of which the locals are justifiably proud.

The town of Kenmare is ideally situated on two famous tourist trails – The Ring of Kerry and The Ring of Beara. The Ring of Kerry is known all over the world and follows the spectacular coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula. It's one of the most dramatic scenic drives in Ireland and makes a most enjoyable day tour. Along the 175 kilometre route are picturesque towns and villages, like Sneem, Caherdaniel and Cahirciveen, an abundance of historical landmarks, sandy coves and beautiful beaches.

Just south of Kenmare is the unspoilt and less commercialised Ring of Beara. This is less well-known than The Ring of Kerry but no less impressive. Its rugged beauty is beyond compare, traffic is minimal and there's a wealth of archaeological sites and spectacular views waiting to be discovered.

To the north of Kenmare is the Killarney National Park – 10,000 hectares of woodland, magical mountain scenery and of course the infamous Lakes of Killarney. These, you'll encounter from above, as you travel the Kenmare/Killarney Road and the staggering beauty of it all will take your breath away.

Not only is Kenmare a unique and desirable tourist destination in its own right with its rural beauty, style and service, but it's a perfectly-positioned base from which to experience everything that the south west of Ireland has to offer. Whether it's walking, cruising on the bay, fishing, golfing, touring or just 'chilling' that interests you, come and do all those things and more here in Kenmare. You won't be disappointed.
