Zillionaires: Road Trip USA review: "Zesty enough to provide a fun evening in"

Zillionaires: Road Trip USA board, box, and tokens

GamesRadar+ Verdict

Although Zillionaires: Road Trip USA isn't going to become your next go-to, it's an enjoyable middle-ground between classics like Monopoly and more advanced board games.

Bluffing mechanics

Accessible, familiar format

Good intro to more complex games

Great conversation-starter

Doesn't have much depth

Can take a long time to finish

Prone to bleed-out

Attractions lose impact after a game or two

Why you can trust GamesRadar+ Our experts review games, movies and tech over countless hours, so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about our reviews policy.

Zillionaires: Road Trip USA asks you a fun question: if you had all the money in the world, what's the most ridiculous thing you could buy? The answer, as it turns out, is the world's largest toilet. Or maybe an igloo hotel. Or is it the Echo Park Time Travel Mart with items from the past, present, and 'future'? Your goal is to find out.

In this addition to Big Potato's library of cheerful board games , you're a real-world Scrooge McDuck with oodles of cash in your possession (zillions, as a matter of fact). And because you're a person of exquisite taste, you're hoping to spend it on the weirdest roadside attractions across North America. But will you enjoy the experience? Zillionaires: Road Trip USA has its flaws, yet it's also zesty enough to provide a fun evening in.

What is it, and how does it work?

Zillionaires: Road Trip USA board, tokens, cards, and money on a wooden table

- Game type:  Party - Players:  2 - 5 - Complexity:  Easy - Lasts:  50 mins - Ages:  8+ - Price:  $24.99 / £34.99 - Play if you enjoy:  Monopoly, The Chameleon, Herd Mentality

Zillionaires: Road Trip USA isn't just about buying the universe's biggest hammer or an enormous ball of yarn weighing 20,000lbs; you've got to buy four of these attractions in a row along the board to win. Simple, right? Well, sort of. The attractions in Zillionaires: Road Trip USA are drawn at random each turn, and you'll have to get the highest bid in an auction with other players to secure them. Because everyone will be keeping an eye on how close you are to getting four spaces in a row as well, they'll also be doing whatever they can to block you.

Makes for a fine line to walk between advantage and disaster

As an added complication, nobody knows how much money you have in your hand. This allows you to put in bids you can't afford, allowing you to artificially raise the price and bleed your opponents of cash. However, there's a catch. If you end up winning a bid that you aren't able to honor, you've got to give up one of your tokens on the board. Much like The Chameleon (another one of Big Patato's party board games ), that makes for a fine line to walk between advantage and disaster.

Is it any good?

Zillionaires: Road Trip USA closeup of box, board, for sale sign, and gavel

While Zillionaires: Road Trip USA won't be something you're able to play on repeat for years like Blockbuster , it's a fun way to spend an hour or so if you want something a little more laid back than usual party fare. That's because, in practice, it comes over as a cross between classic board games such as Monopoly and Connect 4. Buying up property, paper bills, and rows of colorful tokens are the order of the day here.

That makes it a good fit for folks who don't really play games or haven't tried them since tackling Clue during a Christmas get-together when they were kids. The mechanics are more traditional than Big Potato's usual output, and that makes Zillionaires a way of easing newcomers into the hobby at large.

There are some issues tied into the DNA it shares with Monopoly

This lack of complexity won't impress fans of strategy board games for adults , but it helps keep Road Trip USA accessible too. Plus, the deception it relies upon adds nuance to proceedings. It's a lot of fun to pretend you're running low on cash and then break out the big bucks to snaffle up a property you needed to complete your row, for example. I did this during a match and… well, I wasn't very popular after that.

In addition, it's quirky enough to go down well. A 'for sale' sign is put on the board space when it's up for grabs, and you get a wooden gavel you can whack when a bid is finished. Neither have any real benefit in terms of gameplay, but they'll immediately get peoples' attention and that's handy if your would-be players are reticent.

The utterly bizarre - and very real - attractions in Zillionaires: Road Trip USA help with that too. The game comes with a sheet of short facts about each one, and this prompts a lot of discussions when players realise that, yes, there is a house shaped like a shoe with an ice cream shop in the instep. Or a foam version of Stonehenge, appropriately called 'Foamhenge'.

Zillionaires: Road Trip USA closeup of money and board with tokens

However, there are some issues tied to the DNA it shares with Monopoly. Despite claiming to last 30 minutes, none of our sessions were that quick - instead, it was a drawn-out process where we slowly wore each other down. Victory seemed inevitable for those of us that built up enough cash as well. How can you counter-bid someone who drops $40 zillion as if it was nothing? There are ways of turning the tide (namely, cards that give everyone a payout depending on how many tokens they've got on the board), but they don't come up all that frequently.

Still, the idea of hiding your bank balance gives life to this game. You'd think it'd be easy to keep track of how much everyone's spent, but you'll quickly lose any idea when those payout cards start to drop.

Should you buy Zillionaires: Road Trip USA?

If you're looking for traditional games that are still accessible, this one could fit the bill. Even though it's reminiscent of Monopoly, it's much more spunky and dynamic. Similarly, it's a good way of easing newcomers into the world of board gaming (or starting conversations based on its weird roadside attractions, for that matter).

If you're more experienced and used to other Big Potato Games, though? I'd probably pass on it for now unless you find it cheap, as I don't know if there's quite enough here to keep you going.

Perfect. Brand new.

Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible. Board & war games in this condition will show very little to no wear and are considered to be punched unless the condition note says unpunched.

Excellent. Lightly used, but almost like new. May show very small spine creases or slight corner wear. Absolutely no tears and no marks, a collectible condition.

Very Good. Used. May have medium-sized creases, corner dings, minor tears or scuff marks, small stains, etc. Complete and very useable.

Very well used, but complete and useable. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, etc.

  • In most cases, boxed games and box sets do not come with dice.
  • The cardboard backing of miniature packs is not graded. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "card worn."
  • Flat trays for SPI games are not graded, and have the usual problems. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "tray worn."
  • Remainder Mark - A remainder mark is usually a small black line or dot written with a felt tip pen or Sharpie on the top, bottom, side page edges and sometimes on the UPC symbol on the back of the book. Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them.

Excellent game!

I brought it for my arkham horror cards, they fit perfectly and it looks amazing.

Small box packing a deduction game. Not bad.

Got a bag for the tokens, but it's just big enough for all of them. Could be bigger.

Box is actually really small. But it's not bad for what it offers.

Casual Game Insider Back Issues

Take a Trip, Bid, and Buy in Zillionaires Road Trip USA

Zilionaires Road Trip USA

Visit the London Bridge in Arizona or the Idaho Potato Museum. Bid on 49 quirky and unusual roadside attractions around the USA.

Published by Big Potato Games, Zilionaires Road Trip USA is a pure bidding game for 2-5 players, complete with a gavel to bang. It is a reimplementation of  The Game of 49  with a USA travel theme and upgraded components.

A board is set in the center of the table. The board shows a grid of spaces numbered 1 through 49. Space 49 is in the center of the board. Each space corresponds to one of the cards in the location’s deck. Each player takes sold tokens in their player color, and 49 zillion dollars. During the course of the game, you always keep your money hidden from the other players.

Players take turns being the active player. The active player draws a location card. This is the location everyone will be bidding on. Each location has a minimum bid, and the active player always starts the bidding first, choosing to bid or to pass. Once you have passed, you cannot return to the bidding this round. The player who wins the bid bangs the gavel on the table, pays the money to the bank, and places one of his sold tokens on the corresponding space on the board. The next player in turn order then becomes the active player.

Some cards you draw from the deck will be payday cards. These will often list a range of numbers, and the player who wins the card gets to choose any one location space in that number range on the board that is not already sold and place a sold token there. Everyone then earns seven zillion dollars for each sold token they have on the board.

If you ever draw a location card for bidding that has already been sold, then you simply discard it and draw a new one — with the exception of space 49, which can always be stolen. If you already own space 49 and win a bid for it, you get to place a sold token on any empty space on the board.

The first player to get four sold tokens in a row, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, wins the game (it’s three tokens in a five-player game).

Road Trip USA Components

Zilionaires Road Trip USA is fast, has minimal rules, and is pure bidding! There are elements of trying to remember how much money each player has, and you can bluff to try and raise the price (but be careful when you do so, because if you win a bid and can’t pay, you remove one of your sold tokens from the board). But at the end of the day, it’s all about judging how much each space is worth to you.

There is some luck of the draw, determined by when certain locations get drawn from the deck, and this helps to keep the game more casual. Perhaps a location that you needed to win the game comes out just as you’ve spent the last of your money or right after everyone gets a payday. And the more players, the more unpredictable the bidding can go.

The game looks nice, with the gavel being very enjoyable to bang, even if it’s not strictly necessary, and there’s a useful 'for sale' sign to mark what space everyone is bidding on. We particularly liked the theme, as each location corresponds with an unusual roadside attraction in the USA, many of which we’d never heard of before. It was fun to read the short description of each one in the rulebook, and there were several we were left wanting to visit. The locations cards are a little thin, but this was a minor nitpick.

If you don’t like auction games, you’re not going to enjoy this one, but for fans of the genre Zilionaires Road Trip USA is a great, casual option. The rules are so simple and straightforward, and even if you overbid early on and blow through all your money, the paydays ensure that you’re not out of the game.

Pros: Simple rules, paydays prevent elimination, visually easy for everyone to track what is being bid on, interesting theme

Cons : This game won't change your mind if you don't like auction games

Reds, Hunter Greene look to get homestand off on good note

A series win over the New York Yankees this week further confirmed that the Baltimore Orioles are a legitimate contender.

The Reds hope they are getting closer to the point where they can resume a similar metamorphosis.

The Orioles will look to build on that momentum and the Reds will hope to snap out of a slump Friday night when Baltimore (20-11) visits 16-15 Cincinnati (6:10 p.m.) in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

Left-hander Cole Irvin (2-1, 3.49 ERA) is slated to start for the Orioles against Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (1-2, 3.63).

The Orioles moved into sole possession of first place in the American League East on Thursday afternoon, when they beat the visiting Yankees 7-2 in the finale of a four-game series.

Reds Orioles homestand Cincinnati Reds struggling lineup coughs, sputters into brutal May schedule

The Reds had a day off after concluding a 2-4 road trip with a 6-2 loss to the San Diego Padres in the rubber game of a three-game set on Wednesday.

Orioles right-hander Kyle Bradish, making his season debut after recovering from a right elbow injury sustained in February, combined with four relievers on a six-hitter to complete an impressive series by Baltimore pitchers.

The Orioles, the defending AL East champions, took three of four from the Yankees while outscoring them 13-6 and limiting New York to 22 hits.

The Yankees arrived in Baltimore after outscoring the Milwaukee Brewers 36-15 in a three-game weekend series.

“Thought we threw the ball great,” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. “That might have been our best-pitched series, honestly, from the starts we got to how the bullpen pitched against a really good offensive team that was swinging the bats so well coming in.”

The Reds, who finished two games out of a National League wild-card spot last year after losing 100 games in 2022, continued to struggle on offense while dropping the final two games to the Padres. Cincinnati is 0-2-1 in its last three series since recording a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels from April 19-21.

Seven of the Reds’ starters Wednesday were batting below .225. Cincinnati has scored three runs or fewer in nine of 16 games since April 15.

Right fielder Jake Fraley missed six games in that span while second baseman Jonathan India was sidelined for four games, both due to illness. Fraley, who is hitless in 11 at-bats since returning Sunday, sat out the final two games against the Padres.

“We’re keeping everything in perspective,” center fielder Stuart Fairchild said following the Wednesday loss. “I think actually we’re doing a really good job of competing and making do with what we’re working with.”

Both Irvin and Greene earned wins with scoreless seven-inning outings on Saturday. Irvin allowed four hits in the Orioles’ 7-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics, while Greene surrendered just one hit – a fifth-inning double – as the Reds beat the Texas Rangers 8-4.

Irvin is 0-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three career games (one start) against the Reds. Greene has never opposed the Orioles in his three major league seasons.
