How many other travellers are on each trip?

Group sizes are completely dependent on where and how you choose to travel with Contiki. 

In Europe and in most of North America and New Zealand, group sizes can range between 24 – 53 awesome travellers. 

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

Detour trips offer a different type of experience and max out at 16 people led by a local host.

What’s included?

All essential trip elements have been catered to ensure a great time, with great people in great places. But you mean more specifically right?

Your accommodation, essential trip transport, and a good handful of meals are included in the cost of your Contiki trip (on most trips we offer breakfast every day, plus a hand-picked selection of authentic and tasty meals). 

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

A day by day breakdown of inclusions and Free Time Add-Ons are available on the trip specific pages. 

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting. 

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important. 

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for this trip?

Yes! It’s a requirement of traveling with Contiki that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property and Covid related expenses before you travel with us. It’s also super important to check that your insurance covers all of the activities you’ll be trying out, particularly any adventure activities (for all you adrenaline junkies). Can I stay in my destination a few days before/after the trip starts/ends? And can Contiki help me arrange this?

Yes and yes! You can add pre- and post-trip accommodation to your booking in one of three ways:

• This tour visits Germany (plus Austria on the tour extension). In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
• We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
• Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
• Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
• If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

• You will walk for about 1 hour daily across mostly flat terrain, including paved roads and cobblestone streets, with few hills.
• Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
• You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times.
• If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
• Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Berlin and depart from Munich (or Vienna for the tour extension). A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
• Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost.
• All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
• Airlines have varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.

• Winters in Germany are generally cold. To ensure you’re comfortable for outdoor sightseeing and Christmas market visits, we recommend packing a coat, hat, and gloves, as well as rainwear.
• We also suggest packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered.
• A sturdy pair of walking shoes, sneakers, or winter boots is recommended for sightseeing.
• You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
• At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov.
• If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
• If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
• German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses, and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.
• On the tour extension, Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the world-famous Sachertorte.
• Germany (plus Austria on the tour extension) operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C or F plugs with two small, round pins.
• We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
• The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
• Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
• Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
• There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
• Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
• Germany (and Austria on the tour extension) is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
• When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
• You will use the euro in Germany (and in Austria on the tour extension).
• We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.

Germany experiences a temperate seasonal climate with four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Summers are generally mild to warm, with average temperatures ranging from 20° to 30°C (68° to 86°F). Winters can be cold, especially in the northern and eastern regions, with temperatures often dropping below freezing and occasional snowfall. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year, although the summer months tend to be wetter. The coastal areas, such as Hamburg and Bremen, have a maritime climate with milder winters and cooler summers compared to the inland regions.

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

• *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage. 

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances. 

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.

• Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
• Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
• Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
• Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
• Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

• Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
• Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .

Medications and First Aid:

• Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
• Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

• Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
• Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
• Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
• A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

• A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
• Mobile phone.
• Chargers for each electronic you bring.
• Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
• Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
• Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).

Miscellaneous:

• A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
• Insect repellent.
• Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
• A small travel alarm.
• A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
• A travel pillow.
• Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
• Light sleepwear.

• Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).

Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while European appliances run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.

As a result, American appliances designed for use in the United States (typically 120 volts at 60 Hz) may not be directly compatible with the higher voltage used in European countries. Plugging a 120-volt appliance into a 220-240-volt outlet without the appropriate voltage converter or transformer can cause damage to the appliance or pose safety risks.

If you plan to bring American appliances to Europe, you will need a voltage converter or transformer to change the voltage to 220-240 volts from 110 volts. Additionally, you will likely need a plug adapter to fit the American-style plug into the European power outlets. All of Europe operates on the same two round-pronged outlets (Type C).

It's important to note that not all appliances are compatible with voltage converters, so it's essential to check the labels or user manuals of your devices before using them with a voltage converter. Some electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and camera chargers, are dual voltage and can support 120V and 220-240V, so they may not require a voltage converter, but a plug adapter will still be necessary.

To avoid any issues with electrical compatibility during your travels, consider purchasing appliances specifically designed for the voltage used in the region you'll be visiting or use appropriate voltage converters and plug adapters to ensure the safe operation of your American appliances in Europe.

We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. And to pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them with you.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Hair dryers are common accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is commonly available in European hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.

However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings. Most hotels in Europe can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Airport transfers

Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if you are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold and   your flight times coincide with the shuttle-coach transfer timings. To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

Local Specialists

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

Your Coach Driver and Travel Director

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

Are there any activities for children?

There may be a variety of activities for children, depending on the market, from hay bales to ice skating, and some have small rides or playgrounds. The main focus of a Christmas Market is the festive food and drink, crafts, and showcasing local traditions. But there's always a good chance of ice skating.

Are the markets wheelchair accessible?

The markets all take place outside and are wheelchair friendly although some are in cobblestone areas, which may be more difficult. If you require a wheelchair while you travel with Insight Vacations, or any of our sister brands, please ensure you complete the accessibility assessment prior to travel.

Are they only on in December?

Christmas Market dates change year on year and regionally. These generally start in the last week of November and will run until Christmas Day.

Do I need to carry cash with me?

This depends on the region. In Germany, Switzerland and Austria most vendors will take cards but in the Czech Republic or the Balkans then cash would be preferred by vendors in the market.

Are there washrooms?

This will depend on the market as they range in size. If a market does have washrooms, they will usually be portable restrooms and they may be limited in number.

Should I wear comfortable shoes?

Comfortable shoes are a must! There are not many places to sit down and the markets are set up for wandering, drinking gluhwein and shopping for handmade gifts and local treats.

Christmas Markets in Germany & Austria . The scents of cinnamon, roasted almonds, hot chestnuts and hot wine fill the air. In the weeks before Christmas, during the time of Advent, in many cities, towns and villages in Central Europe streets the popular Christmas Markets take place. This long tradition of street markets during the time of Advent originated in the German-speaking countries almost 600 years ago . A visit to the different Christmas Market is a true highlight. A tour to visit different Christmas Markets can easily be done self-guided, with the  Christmas Market Tour by Rail   or, if you prefer to have a rental car, with the  Self-Drive Christmas Markets Vacation .

Festive Atmosphere, Long Tradition

The Christmas Markets, called Christkindlmarkt, Christkindlesmarkt, Christkindlmarket (all meaning “Christ Child’s Market” ) and Weihnachtsmarkt (meaning “Christmas Market”) are quite different from one another – each has its own local specialties like the “Christstollen” (Stollen), Gebrannte Mandeln (candied, roasted almonds), the “Zwetschgenmännle” (dried plums man), the “Nussknacker” (Nutcrackers), traditional Christmas cookies such as “Lebkuchen” and “Magenbrot” (gingerbread), Marzipan, the Bethmännchen. the Bratwurst, and the “ Glühwein ” of course, a hot mulled wine.

At the Christmas markets, you will find stalls which offer traditional and handcrafted Christmas decoration items, ornaments and toys. The whole family enjoys visiting the Christmas markets where they will find carousels and entertainment, enjoy great food and the popular Glühwein (or hot fruit punch) to keep them warm.

For many, the Nuremberg Christmas Market , the “Christkindlesmarkt”, is the  most famous Christmas Market  in the world. It attracts millions of visitors every year. It was first mentioned in 1628 and is located on the Main Market square within the Inner City of Nuremberg’s Old town, where the Imperial Castle is located. The Frankfurt Christmas Marke t is one of the oldest Christmas Markets in Germany, its beginnings reaching back to the year 1393. It is located at the “Roemerberg”, a square in between the historic Town Hall “Roemer” and the Cathedral and it stretches into two directions, north, to the square in from of the “Paulskirche” and south to the banks of the river “Main”. The Frankfurt Market is a very traditional one where you not only find the “Gluehwein” but also the local specialty, hot apple wine. Frankfurt is a stop along the 8 Day Central Germany Christmas Highlights Self-Drive Tour (8S04) , the  10 Day Central Europe Christmas Rail Tour (10R01) , the 8 Day Christmas Classic Rail Circle Tour (8R08)  and the 9 Day Christmas Magic Rail Tour (9R04) .

The Heidelberg Christmas Market is held on five squares around the Old Town, featuring those typical stalls displaying Christmas handicrafts and local specialties. Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The Christmas Market in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is definitely a lot smaller than the Christmas Market in Heidelberg for example, but the setting of the so called “ Reiterlesmarkt ” located in the historic Old Town, which is surrounded by the historic Town Wall, is exceptionally beautiful ! The medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is transformed into a winter’s fairy tale! In Rothenburg ob der Tauber the Christmas Market dates as far back as the 15th century. And ones you are here you should also visit the Christmas Museum which is located just across from the Market Square where the Christmas Market in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is located. A visit of the Christmas Market in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is included along the 8 Day Central Germany Christmas Highlights Self-Drive Tour (8S04) , the 10 Day Central Europe Christmas Rail Tour (10R01) ,  the  8 Day Romantic Road Christmas Self-Drive Tour (8S01) and the 9 Day Christmas Magic Rail Tour (9R04) .

The origins of the Munich Christmas Markets are reported to date back to the 14th century. The first Christmas Market was mentioned in town records as “Nicholaus Markets”.  of the 14th century. There are several Christmas Markets in Munich but the most traditional and most centrally located one is the original Christmas Market located at the beautiful Marienplatz  (St. Mary’s Square). In Dresden the Christmas Market, located at the “Altmarkt” square located right in the middle of the historical city center, is called “ Striezelmarkt “. It dates back into the 14th century. The Striezelmarkt is one of the most popular Christmas Markets in Germany, certainly the most popular one in the area of what was called East Germany before the German reunification took place in 1990. Not only on weekends you will find many Germans from all over the country visiting this market. The “ Dresden Christstollen ” is the culinary highlight of the Dresden Christmas Market, a rich, sweet cake filled with fruits and nuts, also known as “Striezel” – so this is where the name of the  Dresden Christmas Market came from. The Christmas Market in Dresden has the world’s tallest Christmas pyramid , with a height of 14 meters, and the world’s biggest nut cracker . Enjoy a visit of the Striezelmarkt along the 8 Day Central Germany Christmas Highlights Self-Drive Tour (8S04)  or the 10 Day Central Europe Christmas Rail Tour (10R01) .

Also the Salzburg Christmas Market dates back to the 15th century. It is located at the foot of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and Salzburg’s Cathedral and Residence Squares. In front of the facade of the Cathedral with  Hohensalzburg Castle towering above the old Town of Salzburg, this Christmas Market has a romantic location . In the city of Mozart music plays an important role and so many performances, plays and processions take place. There is more than one Vienna Christmas Market , but the most traditional one takes place at the “Rathausplatz” (Square of the Town hall). More than 150 stands offer Christmas tree decorations, culinary delights, and warm drinks. Close by is the romantic  Christmas Village  (Maria-Theresien-Platz), situated between the Museum of Fine Arts and the Natural History Museum. Here you also find areas for playing “ice stock sport”, an Alpine game similar to curling. The Old Viennese Christmas Market  (located on the “Freyung” square in the City Center) is committed to tradition. A Christmas market was held here as early as 1772; today, it is a perfect place to buy handicrafts, decorations, and ceramics. Festive Advent music can be heard on the square from 4 pm every day. The Cultural and Christmas Market  has a most beautiful setting in front of Schoenbrunn Palace  and so does the Christmas Village located at Belvedere Palace  which provides an impressive baroque background to this tranquil Christmas Market which is located just a few walking minutes from Vienna Central Station . A visit to the Christmas Market in Vienna is included along the  9 Day Christmas Magic Rail Tour (9R04) .

Only a few Christmas Markets are open on Christmas, some even until the beginning of January. Tag der Deutschen Einheit is a holiday in Germany that memorializes the momentous 1990 reunification of East and West Germany with consolidated democracy granting new civil freedoms. Locals proudly wave the German flag at political speeches and solidarity marches before enjoying metaphoric community through beer, bratwurst and pretzels.
• Reformation Day. Reformation Day was a holiday in Germany when Martin Luther presented his radical 95 Theses critiquing certain Catholic principles, sparking the momentous Protestant Reformation movement that fundamentally transformed Christianity. Christmas Markets in Germany by Train: A Complete Itinerary

If you want a major dose of holiday cheer in December, head to Germany’s Christmas markets. Warm spiced cider, inviting wooden chalets, and twinkling lights will surely ward off your winter blues. And thanks to the country’s excellent public transit system, visiting Christmas markets in Germany by train is easy and efficient.

Germany’s cities and villages have been hosting Christmas Markets for centuries. They began in the Middle Ages as “winter markets”, where tradesmen sold their goods to the locals during Advent.

As time went on, these markets grew from small events lasting a few days to the epic, month-long celebrations we see today.

While the first recorded winter market was held in Vienna in 1298, the city of Dresden, Germany held the first so-called “Christmas market” in 1434. With this much history behind them, it’s no surprise that German Christmas Markets are spectacular events!

Although each market is unique, there are a few elements that you’ll find across the country. Traditional food and drink are a huge draw, with sausage and glühwein ( mulled wine) being the most popular.

Merchants sell handmade Christmas ornaments, snow globes, nativity figurines, and other holiday decorations. And of course, there will be a multi-story Christmas tree towering over everything.

Before you jump into the Germany Christmas market itinerary like a kid on Christmas morning, take a look at the tips below. I promise they’ll save you a lot of headache, and even a bit of money!

Eat (and drink) the local specialities

Food and drink play a major role in Germany’s Christmas markets. The moment you enter, you can smell the smoke from grilling sausages and the fruity, spicy aroma of  glühwein.

While staples like bratwurst, potato pancakes (r eibekuchen ), and hot chocolate are available everywhere, each region and city has its own local specialties.

Nuremberg is famous for lebkuchen , a gingerbread-like cookie with a soft texture. Frankfurt markets sell mulled apfelwein , a wine made from pressed apples. And in Munich, you’ll find Bavarian specialties like white sausage and  käsespätzle , a cheesy dumpling noodle dish topped with fried onions.

Book your hotel rooms early

German Christmas markets draw visitors from all over the world. To have any hope of booking at a reasonably priced hotel, you need to reserve your rooms at least a month in advance . Two months is better.

I’ve included my detailed hotel recommendations for each city further down the post. But here’s a quick list for your reference:

Learn a few German phrases

I always learn a few basic phrases before traveling abroad. Although everyone spoke English at the markets we visited, I always feel better when I can ask for things and say “thank you” in the local language.

Here are some helpful phrases for your German Christmas market trip:

Always carry cash

If you plan to do more than window shop at the German Christmas markets, you’ll need to bring euros. While some stalls in big cities like Frankfurt accept card payments over a certain threshold, most operate in cash only. Be sure to bring a coin purse to hold your change!

Visit the popular German Christmas markets twice

If you follow me on Instagram , you know that I like to keep it real. Some Instagrammers might have you thinking the markets are charming, mostly empty places where you can take a selfie with no one in the background. Unfortunately, the most popular German Christmas markets are as crowded as Disneyland during peak times!

As someone who gets terribly stressed out in crowded situations, I designed my Germany Christmas market itinerary to allow for nighttime and daytime visits in each city.

While the markets have a more magical, illuminated atmosphere at night, they’re also packed with people. In fact, I can only describe our experience in Cologne at night as being swept away in a human river, with no chance to go against the flow.

But during the day (especially a weekday), it’s far easier to enjoy the stalls and ambiance at your own pace. This is the best time to shop, take photos, and walk around with your mulled wine.

Scope out the mugs and collect your favorites

One of my favorite things about Christmas markets in Germany are the sustainability practices. Food comes in biodegradable containers with wood utensils. And instead of plastic cups, each market has beautiful mugs for serving drinks.

They use a deposit system for the mugs ( pfand in German), so you’ll pay an extra 3-5 euros for your first drink. You use the same mug for refills, and when you’re finished drinking, you can return the mug to any drink stall in that market for your deposit.

Within each of the cities in this itinerary, there are multiple markets, and each market has its own signature mug. I like to scope out the options at night, and then return the next day to buy my favorite mug. The cute red boot pictured above is now a permanent part of my Christmas decor!

Download the DB Navigator App

I absolutely love the DB Navigator App for getting around Germany via public transit. DB (Deutsche Bahn) is the main train operator in Germany, and their app lets you purchase tickets and make seat reservations right from your phone.

When you’re visiting Christmas markets in Germany by train, it’s super convenient to skip the ticket machines and hop right on the next available train. You’ll even get notifications if your journey has been delayed, or if there’s been a platform change.

Consider buying a German rail pass

I’m all about saving money when traveling , and one easy way to do that is by purchasing rail passes. The German Rail Pass  gives you unlimited rides on all DB trains (and some other operators), including the fast ICE trains that connect the major cities on this itinerary. There are 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 15 day passes, with consecutive and non-consecutive day options.

Because my husband and I were traveling together, we were able to buy the Twin 5-day pass, which saved a bit of money over buying individual tickets. It also came in handy when delays and cancellations happened, because we could simply change our route rather than be stuck waiting hours for the next train.

Note that only residents outside of Europe, Turkey and Russia are eligible to buy the pass. However, the sales page uses your passport’s issuing country, so it’s possible to buy the pass if you’re currently traveling in Europe.

Early December is the best time to do a Germany Christmas market trip. While all of the markets on this itinerary open sometime during the last week of November, the opening ceremonies draw extremely large crowds.

Visiting the first week of December is ideal because most people will still be at work/school during the day. As the month goes on, more and more Europeans will take their winter holiday, and crowds peak in the days leading up to Christmas.

To experience as much holiday charm as possible, I put together a Germany Christmas market itinerary that spans four regions.

Although we visited all five cities in five days, you could certainly spend an extra night in a few of them. We ended up staying in Munich for two days to do some sightseeing, and Nuremberg’s history and charm deserves an extra day as well.

Note that we started our Christmas market trip by spending one day in Brussels , so Aachen was our first stop in Germany. Depending on where you’re starting your journey (or if you’re flying into the country), you may want to do this itinerary in reverse, beginning with Munich.

As of September 2023, all of the cities on this German Christmas market itinerary are scheduled to be open for the season. Please be sure to follow local guidelines and review your travel plans in advance of visiting!

Aachen was my favorite German Christmas market of the trip. A massive cathedral dominates the town center, creating a fairytale-esque atmosphere. And the surrounding streets and alleys were beautifully decorated with garland, Christmas trees, and enticing window displays.

Hundreds of stalls radiate out from the cathedral, covering the Munsterplatz and the Katschhof. Opposite the cathedral stands the Rathaus (town hall), and the Marketplatz behind also has a large set of stalls. Be sure to try the Aachener Printen , a type of lebkuchen shaped like a flat rectangle.

While you’re in Aachen, take the time to go inside the Aachen Cathedral, which is one of the oldest in Europe. It’s also the final resting place of Charlemagne.

Before you leave, swing by the Elisenbrunnen. This neoclassical pavilion sits atop a thermal spring, and you can touch the hot water that comes out its fountains.

Where to stay

Bensons Hotel is perfectly located between the markets and Aachen train station. It’s super convenient to hop off the train, walk to the hotel to drop your bags, and head straight to the markets. Being a 10 minute walk from the cathedral is a nice bonus, especially if a rain shower forces you to retreat early.

After spending two days in Cologne in the summer of 2018, I vowed to return for the famous Cologne Christmas market. The Cologne Cathedral is my favorite building in Europe, and seeing hundreds of stalls and twinkling lights against its magnificent backdrop was truly a bucket list-worthy experience.

Cologne has SEVEN Christmas markets spread across the city! Each one has its own unique charms (and collectible mugs), so I suggest visiting most or all if you can.

• Old Market:  A large ice rink and carnival rides are a favorite with children
• Angel’s Market:  Lovely wooden chalets and twinkling lights make this market whimsical
• Cathedral Market : Cologne’s largest and most famous market, with over 160 traditional stalls and a live music stage
• Heavenue Market : Heavenue is put on by the LGBT community, but all are welcome to enjoy the fun atmosphere
• Village of St. Nicholas : Situated next to the Hahnentorburg gate, this market has a medieval village feel
• Stadtgarden: The Belgian quarter is one of my favorite Cologne neighborhoods, and its Stadtgarden village offers a cozy escape from the more crowded markets
• Harbour Market:  Located on the Rhine river next to the Chocolate museum, this market boasts a decorated sailing ship and seafood stalls

If you’re looking to splash out on a great hotel experience, I highly recommend the Hyatt Regency Köln . It’s directly across the river from the Cologne Cathedral, giving you easy access to the city’s major markets.

Aside from location, the hotel itself is gorgeous, full of amenities, and is famous for its lavish Sunday brunch. If you want incredible views and easy access to the sights, I highly recommend staying here.

Frankfurt has a beautiful old town, and its spectacular Christmas market transforms the area into a winter wonderland. Surrounded by colorful half-timbered buildings and a stunning town hall, the Römerberg hosts the bulk of Frankfurt’s stalls. There’s even an illuminated vintage carousel to dial up the magic factor!

In addition to the Römerberg market, there’s a smaller group of stalls (and another carousel) at the Paulsplatz. It’s a good place to escape the crowds for a drink.

If you have the time (and energy), pay 3 euros to climb the 300 steps of Frankfurt Cathedral tower. The 360 degree views from the top are incredible, offering a birds-eye perspective of the markets below.

I also suggest a stroll along the River Main and across the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge). The Sachsenhausen neighborhood south of the river is full of lovely houses, and there are plenty of pubs serving the city’s signature apfelwein .

For maximum convenience at a reasonable price, book a room at Motel One Frankfurt-Römer . Don’t let the name fool you: this chic hotel has modern amenities, an impressive bar and lounge area, and super comfy beds. Plus, it’s under a five minute walk to the markets, and a 15 minute walk to Frankfurt train station.

Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is one of the largest and most popular Christmas markets in the world.

Part of the draw is the Christ Child ( Christkind ) tradition, where a young woman is elected to dress up in an elaborate white and gold dress complete with crown and wings. The Christkind  presides over the market’s opening ceremony, gives a speech to kick off the festivities, and also visits children in the market, schools, and hospitals.

The main market sprawls across the Hauptmarkt square in front of Nuremberg’s Gothic-style Church of Our Lady. Here, traditional wooden stalls are topped with red and white striped roofs, turning the area into a candy cane-esque wonderland. Don’t forget to eat the famous lebkuchen  while you’re here!

In the adjacent side streets, you’ll find the Market of the Sister Cities, where vendors from around the world sell everything from African flutes to Italian ham. There’s also a Children’s Market nearby, with pretty carousels, gingerbread houses, and other kid-friendly stalls and activities.

Aside from the amazing markets, Nuremberg has a lot to offer. There are seven charming bridges that cross the Pegnitz River, and the Maxbrücke and covered Henkerbrücke are most iconic.

The Weißgerbergasse is lined with photogenic half-timbered shops and restaurants. And if you have extra time to spend, check out the Memorium Nuremberg Trials, a museum above the courthouse where the Nuremberg Trials were held.

It’s hard to beat the Gideon Hotel on location and price. There are market stalls directly outside the hotel–including a glühwein vendor–and the train station is a short walk down the street. Despite all this, our room was quiet (a must for me) and had stellar views over the city.

The final city on this German Christmas market itinerary hosts over a dozen markets ( click here for the complete list). Munich’s biggest is the Christkindlmarkt Marienplatz, located next to the gorgeous Rathaus. The combination of cute stalls, ornate architecture, and giant Christmas tree is truly mesmerizing.

For a more secluded experience, head to the Residenz Christmas Village. To reach this small market, head through the covered archway across from the Munich Residenz palace. I loved the calmer feeling of this courtyard location after the bustle of the Marienplatz.

Munich’s vast English Garden hosts its own market near the Chinese tower in the center. It’s further away from the crowds, and the trees make it feel like a hidden gem in the forest.

If you want a modern twist on tradition, check out the Tollwood winter festival. Held at the same site as Oktoberfest, Tollwood is closer to Edinburgh Fringe than your typical German markets. Live music, international food, and sustainable crafts offer a refreshing break from the usual fare.

We also spent an extra day in Munich to do some sightseeing. I highly recommend a visit to Nymphenburg Palace, an opulent estate with multiple residences and serene grounds. The Munich Residenz is another lavish building with state rooms and several museums.

If you can spend 3 days in Munich (or more), I also suggest adding a day trip to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. However, you can’t use your German Rail Pass to get there, and the trip involves multiple modes of public transit.

Luckily, there are a number of day trip operators that run tours to Neuschwanstein from Munich , making it easy to visit the place that inspired Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

Munich is a big city with tons of hotel options. We chose to stay at Hotel Mirabell for two nights because of the price and proximity to the train station. Although it’s a 15 minute walk to the main market, it’s a short 5 minute walk to the Tollwood winter festival.

Thank you for this scintillating virtual tour. I would recommend to readers a stop in Regensburg enroute from Nuremberg to Munich. I lived in the Oberpfalz region for a couple of years and always enjoyed the Regensburg Christkindle Market, the old cathedral and the bridge over the Danube. My favorite hotel in Regensburg is the Hotel Ophree. Each room is decorated differently with antique furniture. It’s more of an adults only hotel if you’re traveling with children. I would also add Rothenburg Oder Tauber, the medieval walled city on the Tauber. It’s only accessible by regional train, but well worth the side trip.

Sorry, I took this trip 3 years ago and cannot remember the total cost! The biggest expenses were hotels and trains, as Christmas is a popular time for traveling in Germany and rooms are very pricey. We paid around 150EUR per night for mid-range hotels, plus 165EUR each for DB Rail Passes (the price has likely gone up since).

Would you recommend a rental car over the train?

Hi Brad, I’d personally stick with the train for this itinerary as it’s very easy to get from city to city. Renting a car would be far more expensive given the cost of petrol, and you may get caught up in adverse road conditions if it were to snow.
