• Timing : You should apply before your current status expires, typically indicated on the I-94 Arrival/Departure Record. USCIS recommends applying at least 45 days before your current status expires.
• Eligibility : Not everyone can change their status. For example, you cannot change your status if you entered the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program unless it is due to marriage to a U.S. citizen.
• Status violation : If you’ve violated the terms of your current status (for instance, if you’ve started working while on a B1/B2 visa without authorization), you usually can’t change your status.
• Approval : Even if you meet all conditions and file an application, the final decision is up to USCIS.

Sure, it’s slipped a bit in the last couple of years — but it’s still one of the best passports you can have.

Regardless of whether a country has visa-free access, requirements still need to be met if you travel abroad. We recommend confirming with the relevant embassy before making any travel plans.

Although each country has different requirements, here are some general rules:

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your intended departure date from the country you’re traveling to. Don’t leave it too late to renew your passport .
• Consider a new passport when you have accumulated a lot of stamps. Although most countries only require 1 blank page , many require 2 blank pages  (and some even need 3).
• You may be asked for proof of onward travel , which is not a problem if you have a return ticket. If you plan on country-hopping, you must have proof of your travel plans. You may be refused boarding to your planned destination if you cannot adequately demonstrate to immigration officers that you plan on leaving their country. If you’re unsure when you plan on going, you can buy a refundable onward flight and re-book later.
• Some countries require that you have adequate medical insurance to cover your stay. Regardless of whether it is mandatory, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Check out our guide to travel insurance to find the best one for you.
• It is rare, but you may be asked for proof of funds and will need to satisfy immigration so that you can support your travels. This can catch you off guard, and trying to log in to your bank account on airport Wi-Fi can be a bit frantic. Algeria Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($160)

Stay permitted: 90 days maximum at each entry

• You will need a visa in advance unless you are part of an organized excursion from a cruise ship, in which case you can obtain a visa on arrival.
• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have 1 page per stamp . You may experience some difficulties if you have an Israeli stamp.
• You can apply for a visa in person or via mail at the embassy in Washington, D.C., if you are there (or nearby in North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia). If you are based anywhere else, you must apply at the New York consulate.
• Visa applications take at least a week, and you will be required to submit 2 forms, 2 passport photos, and proof of travel. You may also need to provide evidence of travel insurance.

Botswana Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: 90 days

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and you can stay in Botswana for 90 days within a 12-month period without a visa. Your passport should have 3 or more unused pages, 1 blank page per entry.

Côte d’Ivoire Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: 24 to 36 months with multiple re-entries

• You will need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and has 1 blank page.
• You can apply for a visa in advance at the embassy in Washington, D.C., or apply for an e-visa at the airport (but this must be requested in advance).
• Applications take 2 to 3 days for your passport to be returned to you, and you will need to submit 2 application forms, 2 passport photos, proof of air travel, and a hotel reservation.
• A copy of your yellow fever vaccination certificate will be required for travel.

Egypt Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($25 single entry, $60 multiple entry)

Stay permitted: 30 days

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have 1 blank page.
• You can apply for an e-visa prior to travel and are advised to do so at least 7 days before departure.
• Single-entry visas cost $25, or you can pay $60 for a multiple-entry visa.
• You will need to have a printout of your e-visa and travel itinerary.
• Tourists entering Egypt via the Taba border from Israel may get a 14-day no-fee visa for travel in the Sinai Peninsula or the 30-day visa as above for more comprehensive travel within Egypt.

Kenya Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($51)

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months with 2 blank pages.
• You will need proof of yellow fever immunization, or you may be denied entry.
• Single-entry visas are currently available at the airport but be aware there are plans to phase this out in favor of an e-visa system . (E-visa is mandatory before boarding the flight; learn more at https://kenyaembassydc.org/evisa/ )
• An e-visa takes 2 business days to process, and you will need to take a printed copy with you when you travel to Kenya.
• Two categories of single-entry visits are available. Category 2 Single Entry Visa is valid for travel within 3 months of the issue date. Category 3 Single Entry Visa is valid for travel within 1 month of the issue date. Both allow a stay of up to 90 days in Kenya, which can be extended for a further 90 days at immigration headquarters in Nairobi for a maximum stay of 6 months.

Lesotho Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months (6 months to be safe) and have 1 page per entry stamp.
• Tourists can stay for 30 days and can extend for an additional 30 days — 5 extensions are permitted for a total stay of 180 days.

Mauritius Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: 60 days

• You will need a valid passport with 1 blank page.
• You will need to provide proof of onward or return travel. You may also be asked to provide proof of sufficient funds (at least $100 per night for the duration of your stay).

Morocco Tourist Visa Requirements

• You’ll need a passport valid for 6 months, and 1 full page is required for an entry stamp.
• Ensure that your passport is stamped when entering Morocco and isn’t damaged, as this may cause issues on departure.
• It is forbidden to export Moroccan currency.

Mozambique Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: No for those traveling to the country and not residing with a citizen or resident of Mozambique (i.e., those staying at a hotel, guest house, or lodge). Yes for anyone visiting a citizen or resident of Mozambique.

• You will need a passport valid for 6 months with at least 3 blank pages for a visa and stamps.
• Proof of round-trip flight and hotel reservation.
• Visas are available on arrival ($50) for all nationalities and require an accommodation reservation, an onward plane ticket, and a valid passport with 3 empty pages and 6 months validity.
• All passport data pages, visa application forms, and documents must be scanned in one PDF file per applicant (except 2 passport-size photos, money order, and prepaid return label and envelope). It needs to be emailed to the Consulate.
• Processing time takes place once the pre-approval from Immigration in Mozambique and the physical documents/requirements are received. This may be 3 to 10 business days.
• Submit 2 passport-size photographs (passport photos must be in color and with a white background).
• Include a self-addressed envelope or a pre-paid air bill with a tracking number (preferably FedEx) unless the application is brought to the Embassy in person.
• Payment must be only by money order in U.S. dollars, and  payable to the Embassy of Mozambique .

Namibia Tourist Visa Requirements

• You’ll need a passport valid for at least 6 months with at least 3 blank pages.
• Immigration officials in Namibia have been known to give shorter stays, so check your entry stamp and the validity of your stay to be safe.

Nigeria Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have at least 1 blank page.
• Nigeria does have a visa-on-arrival program, but tourists will not be eligible.
• You will need to complete a visa application form and have confirmation of your online payment. In addition to the visa fee of $160, there is a charge of ~$41 with each application, and you will need the receipt. Important Note : Selected visa may include an additional fee of $65 for biometric capture.
• You’ll also need a letter of invitation from a host willing to accept responsibility for you and a copy of their passport.
• A copy of your return flights and hotel reservation is required.
• You must provide proof that you have had polio and yellow fever vaccinations.
• All of the above must be taken to an interview at the Washington, D.C. embassy or the Atlanta consulate.

Senegal Tourist Visa Requirements

• Senegal introduced visa exemptions for U.S. citizens in 2015.
• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have 1 page per stamp.
• Yellow fever vaccinations are not a requirement but are recommended.

South Africa Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after your return date and have 2 consecutive empty visa pages per entry (not including endorsement pages).
• A yellow fever vaccination certificate is only required if you have passed through a yellow fever country in the last 10 days.
• If you want to extend your stay past 90 days, you will need to apply for a temporary residence visa rather than another tourist visa.

Tanzania Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($100)

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months with 1 blank page.
• The multiple-entry visa is valid for a maximum of 12 months. The maximum stay duration for each visit is 90 days. Applications take 10 days and require a completed form, 2 passport photos, and your flight itinerary.
• Appointments are not required at the embassy in Washington, D.C. The embassy has expedited visa application services such as 3-day, next-day, and same-day for additional fees.
• Note that volunteering is prohibited on a tourist visa even if you have paid for the opportunity.

Tunisia Tourist Visa Requirements

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months and 1 page per stamp.
• U.S. citizens with Arabic names or those born in the Middle East may experience delays when arriving in Tunisia.

Uganda Tourist Visa Requirements

• You will need a valid passport for at least 6 months with 1 at least page free for entry stamp.
• Visas are not available on arrival; you will need to apply for an e-visa at least 2 weeks before you arrive.
• To apply, you’ll need a copy of your passport, a passport-sized photo, and a copy of your yellow fever vaccination certificate.
• If you are traveling around, it may be less time-consuming and more cost-effective to get an East Africa Tourist visa for $100, which gives you 90 days of multiple-entry access to Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda.

Zimbabwe Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($30)

• You will need a passport with at least 6 months of validity and 2 blank pages.
• Tourist visas cannot be acquired through the embassy in Washington, D.C., but you can apply online through the Zimbabwe eVisa website , at the airports, or at other border points of entry.
• In addition to the 30-day single-entry visa, there is also an option for a 45-day/double-entry visa that costs $45 or a 12-month/multiple-entry visa for $160.

Argentina Tourist Visa Requirements

Brazil Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes

• You will need a passport valid for at least 1 month and must have 1 page for entry stamp.
• Brazil has consulates all over the U.S., but it is easier to apply for an eVisa . In addition to paying the $40 visa fee and the $4.24 service fee, you need to upload a passport photo and a copy of your passport.

Canada Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: 180 days

• You will need a valid passport with at least 1 blank page. If transiting Canada on your way to Europe, your passport should be valid for at least 3 months (though it’s best to have at least 6 months to be safe).
• Individuals with criminal records (including alcohol-related driving offenses) may experience difficulties entering Canada without obtaining approval of rehabilitation first. At least 5 years will need to have elapsed since your sentence (not your conviction), and you will need to complete an application in advance and pay either $200 or $1,000/Canadian dollars, depending on the criminal offense. Note : These applications can take over a year to process. Make sure you plan far enough in advance of your travel to Canada.

Chile Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for the duration of your trip and have at least 1 blank page.
• Upon arrival, you will be given a Tourist Card that allows 90 days in Chile. This can be extended for 90 days for $100 at the Chilean Immigration Office . Make sure you keep the Tourist Card safe, as losing this may cause issues when leaving Chile.

Colombia Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for the duration of your visit, and 1 page is required for the entry stamp unless enrolled in Migración Automática, a program for frequent travelers.
• You can stay in Colombia for 90 days and request an extension for up to 90 days from the Colombian immigration authority .
• If you travel from Brazil, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or Uganda, you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate from at least 10 days before.

Costa Rica Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: Up to 180 days

• No visa is required for stays up to 180 days, but your passport must be valid when entering Costa Rica and have 1 page per entry stamp.
• You will need proof of onward travel and may be asked for proof of funds of more than $100 per day for the duration of your trip.
• There is an exit tax of $29, but this may be included in your airline ticket. You will need to check the terms with your airline.

Cuba Tourist Visa Requirements

• Travel to Cuba for tourism purposes is currently prohibited.
• Obtaining a license to travel to Cuba from the U.S. is possible under specific circumstances. There are 12 categories that include humanitarian projects, family visits, educational activities, and journalism.
• U.S. citizens will require a Tourist Card rather than a tourist visa, but the term is used interchangeably. To apply, your passport must be valid and have 2 blank pages for entry/exit stamps.

Dominican Republic Tourist Visa Requirements

• As a tourist, a visa is not required for stays less than 30 days, but you will be required to purchase a tourist card.
• A tourist card can be purchased online or obtained on arrival, costing $10.

Ecuador Tourist Visa Requirements

Australia Tourist Visa Requirements

• A visa (ETA) is required, which can be applied for online at the Electronic Travel Authority website.

• U.S. citizens can apply for an E-visa, which takes 3 business days to process (not including the day E-visa , which takes 3 business days to process (not including the day you apply).
• You should note that immigration laws and regulations for Uzbekistan are known to be enforced at the discretion of border control officers. While the information provided above and from the Uzbek government may be correct, the arrival situation may differ.

Europe is one of the most accessible continents for U.S. citizens to travel to, predominantly because of The Schengen Agreement, which includes 26 countries that have abolished their internal borders to facilitate free movement.

• There is no provision for a visa on arrival, and you must arrive and depart Russia on the exact dates provided on your visa.
• You must start applying for a Russian visa online , but this is only the first step. You still need to print off this completed application and submit a physical copy to a consular department of the Russian Federation.

Iran Tourist Visa Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and 1 page is required for the entry stamp.
• Before considering any travel to Iran, read the travel advisory .
• As there is no Iranian Embassy, you must apply for a visa through the Iranian interest section of the Pakistani Embassy . The process can take 4 to 6 weeks, but it is advised to allow 8 weeks to be safe.
• Multiple sources state that you can only get authorization for a visa if you apply through an organized tour.

Israel Tourist Visa Requirements

• It is recommended that you have at least 6 months validity left on your passport. Usually, your passport will not be stamped, but you should still have at least 1 blank page.
• Israel has a visa exemption policy in place for U.S. citizens and permits stays of up to 90 days.

Jordan Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes ($56)

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months and 1 page is required for entry stamp.
• Jordan issues visas on arrival for U.S. citizens that permit a stay of 30 days. You can also apply for the visa beforehand, which takes 5 business days. Double-entry and multi-entry visas are also available from the Embassy.

Lebanon Tourist Visa Requirements

Oman Tourist Visa Requirements

• You can apply for an E-visa in advance
• U.S. citizens are eligible for a 1-year multi-entry visa that allows stays of up to 30 days at a time. There is also the option of a single-entry 30-day stay and a single-entry 10-day stay visa. The 1-year multiple-entry visa costs 50 Omani Rials (~ $130), the 30-day single-entry visa costs 20 Omani Rials (~ $52), and the 10-day single-entry visa costs 5 Omani Rials (~ $13). Qatar Tourist Visa Requirements

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months with a minimum of 2 blank pages.
• On arrival, U.S. citizens are entitled to visa-free entry for a period of 30 days at any MOI service center or airport immigration office. The 3-day visa waiver entitles you to multiple entries during that period.

Saudi Arabia Tourist Visa Requirements

Visa required: Yes (eVisa: $142; VOA: $80)

• You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months and 1 page required for entry stamp.
• U.S. Nationals are eligible for an eVisa , which costs ~$142 (including application fee and medical insurance fee), granting multiple entries for 1 year from the issue date. In each entry, you can stay up to 90 days.
• You also have the option of a Visa on Arrival, which costs $80 (only Visa fee). This visa allows a stay of up to 90 days. The number of entries permitted depends on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The multiple-entry visa is valid for a year from the issue date.

Syria Tourist Visa Requirements

Stay permitted: n/a

• A valid passport and visa are required to travel to Syria. The passport should have 1 page available for an entry stamp.
• However, as of March 2014, Syria suspended its embassy and consular services, making obtaining a visa problematic.

Turkey Tourist Visa Requirements

• You will require a passport that is valid for 6 months beyond your date of entry and has 1 page for entry and exit stamps.
• You can apply for an e-Visa online that entitles you to a stay of 90 days within a 180-day period.
• Applications should be made at least 48 hours prior to departure.
• U.S. citizens traveling to Turkey on cruise ships are entitled to a visa-free stay of 72 hours.

The US passport renewal fee is paid by those submitting application Form DS-82 . Adult renewal applicants in the U.S. may apply by mail (which we recommend).

You can also apply in person at a Regional Passport Agency if you have urgent international travel needs within 14 days or a life or death emergency that requires travel within 72 hours. Adult applicants outside the U.S. must apply through a U.S. Embassy or Consulate .

Why Your Passport May Cost More

Please note that the actual total cost of getting a passport is more than the sum of the fees paid to the U.S. government. There are additional expenses that are not listed below such as postage, the price of a passport photo, and a protective envelope to send the application form. These are just a few of the extra costs you should expect when applying for a new travel document.

If you need a passport faster than the 6 to 8 weeks it takes for routine service, you can add the expedited service fee to the total payment. This will reduce your wait to 2 to 3 weeks

We recommend you also add the cost of 1 to 2 days delivery when sending the application by mail. This is not required if you submit the form at a regional agency , however, you will need to provide proof of imminent/urgent international travel to use this option. Note that this is not an option for passport cards. Passport cards are shipped via First Class Mail only.

If the 2 to 3 weeks turnaround offered through typical expedited service is not fast enough or you are unable to visit a processing center, you should apply online for expedited service through a registered courier service . By doing so, you could get your passport as quickly as the same day you apply.

In the United States, applying for and receiving a passport can be quite a lengthy process — and it’ll cost you some money. Let’s take a look at the different types of passport applications and how much a passport costs, whether you’re using an agency, heading to the post office or renewing by mail.

How much does a passport cost?

The amount that you’ll need to pay is going to depend on your age, the type of passport you're getting and whether you've had a passport before. For anyone age 16 or older applying for a passport for the first time, a new passport card will cost $65 and a passport book will cost $165. If you get them both, it'll cost $195.

A passport card grants you access over land and select sea borders but does not allow for international air travel.

For children under the age of 16, the cost is slightly lower for a new passport. A passport card for children costs $50 and a passport book costs $135. To get both a passport book and card for a child, it'll cost $150.

Types of passport applications

U.S. passport fees vary based on what type of application you’re submitting. Here’s a breakdown of the different passport applications you can do:

Adult (over 16) applying for the first time . You can opt to get a passport book, a passport card or both book and card. Costs range from $65 to $195, including an acceptance fee.

Adult (over 16) renewing your passport . You can renew your passport book, card or opt for both. You won’t pay an acceptance fee, so costs are lower. They run from $30 to $160. 

Child (under 16) applying for a passport . Children are not eligible to renew passports; instead they must reapply every five years . Costs range from $50 to $150, including an acceptance fee. 

How much does it cost to renew a passport?

The passport renewal cost varies based on what you’re getting. A passport book by itself costs $130, while renewing a passport card costs just $30. Opting for both will run you $160.

The cost of passport changes

How much are passport changes? You don’t need to get an entirely new passport if you just need to make a change. Depending on the reason for your change, it may cost you nothing to get an alteration.

Correcting a data error . This is free to do. 

Changing your name or gender . Fees may vary, so if either of these changes apply to you, be sure to use the U.S Department of State's built-in fee calculator.

Getting an expedited passport

Applying for or renewing a passport can take a lot of time, especially when government delays cause a backlog. If you need a passport quickly, it’s possible to apply for expedited service. The current wait time to get your passport are as follows:

Routine processing: Six to eight weeks.

Expedited processing: Two to three weeks.

There are additional fees associated with getting an expedited passport. You’ll also need to make an appointment at a passport agency, though these are limited and not guaranteed.

Here are the costs for rushing your passport:

Expedited service . The cost for expedited service is $60 and includes a reduced processing time. 

One- to two-day delivery . This runs an additional $19.53 and ensures that once processed, your passport book is sent back quickly.

Using a passport agency for urgent travel

If you have urgent travel, you can also opt to go to a passport agency or passport center. You won’t pay more than you would for an expedited passport. You’ll also be able to skip paying for shipping.

However, in order to take advantage of this in-person agency service, you must have international travel within the next 14 days. You must also provide proof of this travel.

If you have life-or-death circumstances and need to travel within the next three business days, your appointment will be prioritized.

Costs of using a passport courier

Finally, there are passport courier or expeditor companies that work on your behalf to get you an expedited passport.

These are not operated by the U.S. government and cannot get your passport to you any faster, but they do provide aid with completing the requirements for getting a new passport.

However, the costs of these courier services can be outrageous. In addition to paying the standard fees for your passport, these agencies will also charge you additional fees. In circumstances where you have very urgent travel, this can cost you hundreds more than just doing it yourself.

So, how much is a U.S. passport?

Getting a U.S. passport can take a lot of coordination, especially if it’s your first time.

The fee that you’ll pay for your passport will differ based on whether it’s a renewal, a name change, how old you are and whether you’re also getting a passport card. If you want the passport to be expedited through the post office, there is an additional fee of $60.00, making the total cost of a new passport to be $225.00.

New Minor Passport Book : The first-time minor passport book application fee is $100.00, and the execution fee is $35.00; together, it will cost $135.00 for a minor passport. If expedited service is chosen, then the price is $60.00. The total cost, including the expedited fee, is $195.00.

Passport Renewal : The passport book renewal fee is $130.00, and no execution fee. The expedited cost is $60. Together, the total current U.S. passport renewal fee is $190.00. A minor passport is not renewable. 

Replacing a Lost Passport Book : The price is the same as applying for a new adult passport. It is $130.00, then add $60.00 for expedited. So, the total cost, including expedited service, is $190.00.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Minor Passport Book : The ‘lost passport fee’ is the same as applying for a new minor passport. It is $100.00. If needed in a hurry, then add $60.00 for expedited service. So, the total cost, including expedited service for the replacement of a lost or stolen passport, is $160.00 .

Adult Passport Card : The application for a passport card fee is $30.00, and the execution fee is $35.00. Together, an adult passport card is $65.00 . Add $60.00 more if you choose expedited service.

Minor Passport Card : The application fee is $15.00, and the execution is $35.00 . The passport cost of a minor passport card is $50.00 . With the expedited service, the total cost is $110.00 . The cost includes $60.00 for expedited service.

Passport Book & Card : You may also choose to apply for a passport book & card. In this case, you will pay a $160 application fee and a $35 acceptance fee. This totals to $195 for a first-time adult passport book and the passport card.

Passport Processing Times

Our passport fee table is broken down into different sections for routine and expedited services. The passport processing time for routine passport service is 8 – 11 weeks, and expedited passport services – 5 to 7 weeks from the post office.

If the printed expiry date on your Venezuelan passport has passed

If the printed expiry date has passed and you’re applying for a visitor visa, study permit, work permit or to extend your stay as a temporary resident in Canada, follow these steps:

• Add 5 years to the printed expiry date shown on your passport and enter it in the expiry date field of the application form.
• Include a letter of explanation with your application stating: “I am a Venezuelan national with a Venezuelan passport, which has been extended for 5 years”.

Warning: If your passport is still expired after adding 5 years to the printed expiry date, your passport is considered expired. You’re not eligible to submit an application with that passport.

Faster visitor visa processing for spousal applicants

If you’re being sponsored for permanent residence (PR) by your spouse or partner, you could benefit from faster processing for a visitor visa.

You may be eligible if you

• submitted an application to be sponsored for permanent residence
• received an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) that confirms the application is in progress

Applications that need more information, for example custody documents for a child, will take longer to process.

When your sponsor receives the AOR for your permanent residence application, you can apply for a visitor visa. If you’re eligible, your visitor visa application will automatically receive faster processing. You don’t need to request it.

You must still meet all of the requirements to be eligible for a visitor visa .

To apply for a visitor visa to visit Canada on business, you need to qualify as a business visitor.

To qualify, you must show that:

• you plan to stay for less than 6 months
• you don’t plan to enter the Canadian labour market
• your main place of business and source of income and profits is outside Canada

Business visitor activities include business meetings, special events or training for a few days or weeks.

If your meeting, event or conference is registered with us, include the event code in your application. You should get this code from the organizer.

Note: If you plan to stay for more than 6 months, or if you plan to work in Canada, you may be considered a temporary worker and have to  apply for a work permit .

To apply online, you need a scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents, and a valid credit or debit card.

If you need a visitor visa to travel to Canada, you must apply online for one. Only online applications will be accepted and processed. However, you can apply on paper if:

• you can’t apply online because of a disability or
• you’re travelling with an identity or travel document that was issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen

Passport price to rise for second time in 14 months

The price of a UK passport will rise on Thursday, for the second time in just over 14 months.

The cost of applying online to get a new or renewed adult passport will go up from £82.50 to £88.50 from midnight.

This 7% rise follows a 9% rise in February 2023. Consumer group Which? said travellers due to renew would "likely be shocked" by the hike.

The Home Office said it did not make a profit from passport applications and the fee rise would improve services.

The cost of applying for child's passport online is also going up from £53.50 to £57.50. If you apply by post the price rises from £64 to £69.

A postal application for an adult passport will rise from £93 to £100.

It costs more if you apply from abroad, or if you require a passport urgently. Passports are free for people born on or before 2 September 1929.

Prior to last year's rise, passport fees had not gone up for five years and a standard adult online application cost £75.50.

Guy Hobbs, Which? travel expert, said: "The cost of renewing a passport has jumped significantly in the last few years, with this latest price hike following hot on the heels of a hefty 9% rise just last year."

He added: "While these price rises may well reflect rising production or processing costs, the UK passport is now amongst the priciest in Europe."

The online cost of an £88.50 UK passport is among the most expensive in Europe. The UK comes in behind countries like Switzerland (£122), Denmark (£103) and Italy (£99.50). The cost of a US passport, meanwhile, is £103.

Martyn James, a consumer rights campaigner, said: "Just because a business or organisation can raise prices doesn't mean they should. The starting point with any price increase - and this is 16 percentage points over 14 months - should be what are you doing to make the service better.

"Yet the Passport Office has struggled over the same period with meeting its basic obligations, so many users will question what they are getting for their money."

The Home Office said: "The new fees will help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation.

"The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications."

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA . 

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality. 

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet. 

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

From midnight on Thursday 11 April, the price of an adult passport will rise by £6 to £88.50 for applications made online.

The government said: “The new fees will help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation. The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications.

“The fees contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders. The increase will also help enable the government to continue improving its services.”

Because the cost of passport ownership is around 2.3p per day, travellers whose passports are due to expire by Christmas 2024 – and who do not need the documents for imminent travel – will save if they renew online before midnight.

For under-16s, the rise is £4 . However, because their passports last only for five years, the cost of ownership is higher – just over 3p per day – and the calculation is different.

Those with children’s passports due to expire before 13 August 2024 could do so now, again so long as no imminent travel is planned.

However, if a teenager is soon going to turn 16, it will be better to wait in order to benefit from the 10-year validity of an adult passport.

Pre-requisites:

• An Indian passport valid for at least six months from the date of departure and the visa submission date;
• A return ticket from Singapore;
• Proof of the accommodation;

• At least two blank pages in your passport;
• A confirmed return ticket and proof of accommodation (hotel with complete address and contact number);
• Visa application form;

• Bank statement for the last six months, signed by a bank official;
• Travel insurance with a minimum coverage of SGD 30,000 (INR 18,57,152.41).

Lastly, a visa from one of the following countries is essential, valid for at least a month from the date of entry to Singapore under VFTF.

Typically, a Singapore visa application is processed within 3 days of submission, excluding the day of application. However, processing times may vary. To check the status of your application, visit the official website and navigate to ‘Apply Entry Visa’ under the ‘e-Services and Forms’ menu on the homepage. Depending on the type of visa application, select either ‘Enquire Family Application Status’ or ‘Enquire Application Status’. Enter your visa application number and travel document number, then click ‘Next’ to view the status. You can obtain a copy of your visa using the ‘print e-visa’ option.

Singapore visa: Validity and renewal

A Singapore visa is valid for 2 years, with a stay of up to 30 days per visit. Upon entry, your passport will be stamped with ‘Singapore Visit Pass’ and the last day of your permitted stay.
