3 Star Trek Series Leaving Netflix In September, Signals Possible Move To Consolidate Franchise On Paramount+
| August 26, 2021 | By: Anthony Pascale 54 comments so far
The library of Star Trek television series has been readily available on all the major streaming services in the USA for years, but it looks like those days may be coming to an end.
Netflix says goodbye to TOS, Voyager , and Enterprise
On Wednesday, Netflix announced all the shows coming and going from the service in September and three Star Trek shows were included, all of which will be leaving at the end of the month. Exiting Netflix are all three seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series , all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager , and all four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise . So far, there is no word on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .
Netflix was the first streaming service to license the Star Trek television catalog, having cut a deal in early 2011 . Four of the five Star Trek shows started streaming in July 2011 , with DS9 joining in October. Licensing deals for all five series were struck with Hulu and the Amazon Prime Video service in subsequent years. Star Trek: The Animated Series was available on Netflix and other services for a few years, but is currently only available on Paramount+.
Star Trek has been popular on Netflix, with Voyager being the most rewatched according to a Netflix release in 2017 . And of course Netflix partnered with CBS to create Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, with Netflix distributing it outside the USA and Canada.
Starting with its 2014 launch, all of the Star Trek shows were available for streaming on CBS All Access, which was relaunched by ViacomCBS as Paramount+ earlier this year. Paramount Plus is the exclusive home in the USA to three original Star Trek series ( Discovery , Picard , and Lower Decks ), with two more arriving over the next year (the animated kids series Prodigy and the live-action Strange New Worlds ).
Star Trek coming home to Paramount Plus?
Unlike feature films which have short licensing windows and move around, as we saw recently with a number of the Star Trek feature films , television licensing deals tend to be long term. The Star Trek shows have been on Netflix consistently for ten years. The same is true for Hulu and Amazon Prime since joining those streaming services. In theory, Netflix and ViacomCBS could renegotiate a license, however, industry trends indicate this is could be the beginning of the end for Star Trek shows being sold to other streaming services. If that is the case, DS9 and TNG will eventually leave Netflix when deals for those shows expire, and all five shows will drop out of Hulu and Amazon as well; as of now, there are no details on if or when this will happen.
Assuming this is the plan, it would leave Paramount Plus as the exclusive streamer for the Star Trek television library in the USA. This type of pulling back of licensed properties has been a trend in the industry: Warner Media did it with Friends on HBO Max and NBC Universal did the same with The Office and Parks and Recreation on Peacock. ViacomCBS is also doing this with other shows. For example, Evil is also exiting Netflix in September. In June that series moved from the CBS Broadcast Network to become a Paramount Plus original series with a brand new season.
While not explicitly calling out Star Trek, ViacomCBS has made it clear they are pivoting away from their previous policy of aggressively licensing their content. Earlier this month when speaking about the latest quarterly results, CEO Bob Bakish noted that licensing revenue had fallen due in part to “ongoing efforts to limit licensing to third-party streaming services.”
As of now, there is no indication that ViacomCBS is pulling back on licensing Star Trek internationally, where all the series are still available on Netflix and other streaming services. ViacomCBS has also partnered with Netflix and Amazon to stream some of their new Star Trek shows internationally. However, in the long term, as Paramount Plus expands globally, the Star Trek franchise may eventually follow the same pattern seen in the USA.
TrekMovie has reached out to both ViacomCBS and Netflix and we are awaiting comment.

That’s kind of annoying. I still usually use Netflix to watch Trek. I guess now I’ll have to use either Paramount +, Hulu, or Prime.
This news is NOT a bad thing!
The bad thing is paying Paramount+ and not having the whole Star Trek collection. Waiting to have all the movies and series in ONE place. :P
I have that. It’s called my bookshelf. :P
(I say this knowing some smartass will snag me on Lower Decks Season 2, Discovery Season 4, Picard Season 2 and Strange New Worlds Season 1)
Someone, I think here, sniped me for saying I like to have the option of streaming something I physically own when Iâm away from home. But itâs true – I would happily visit a friend and watch a Star Trek movie with them one night. But I donât want to suddenly have to subscribe to Showtime to do that.
True. Waiting for that moment. My issue is buying the latest digital format when (soon) will become obsolete. Eventually will begin to order the entire collection.
Same here. When all else fails you can always count on physical media.
Owning the physical media is still the best way to go.
Iâm not the biggest Netflix fan, but they have the best interface, by far. Itâs perfectly designed and intuitive. Paramount+ just slapped a new name on the ancient CBS All Access architecture. Itâs a total mess, by far the worst streaming interface of them all. They only just added a friggin playlist feature! Even the selection of avatars is pathetic.
Itâs not surprising that Trek is being used like this, itâs pattern behavior. But it would be nice if some effort was put into making P+ a halfway decent streamer.
Another negative about Paramount+ (and Peacock) is that it forgets what you have watched. I watched Lower Decks season 1 but if you looked now, it shows I haven’t watched any of the episodes. Netflix, HBO Max, Prime, Hulu, and Disney+ will remember what you have watched if you stop watching a series but return to it months later.
This will probably reduce further the number of people into Trek and turn fans like us only into a checkbook. Voyagerâs late popularity AFIK is all Netflix based.
On the other hand⊠now⊠the fansâŠ. Are in control!! Bwahahahaha!
While I do subscribe to Paramount plus to get the new shows, I’m doubly glad that I have my beloved TOS on BluRay.
Same here (and TAS, TNG , the first ten movies, the first season of Lower Decks , and the recent DS9 doc; I still need to get DS9 itself and Voyager on DVD and Enterprise on Blu-ray). Streaming is fantastically convenient, but physical media is still kind of a must for the âcoreâ stuff one really cares about.
Why not just rip your whole Trek collection and stream it anywhere with Plex?
What is this âanywhereâ of which you speak? :p
It’s a bit cumbersome, but you can download a Plex app to almost every smart TV and log in to your media server pc with Plex on it, and you can stream everywhere, in an emergency Trek withdrawal you can even stream to a mobile phone ;)
I figured, but I was more joking about âanywhereâ, since I donât really go places now the way I used to in The Before Times, way back in ancient 2019.
A lot of newer fans dropped in from Netflix in the last decade, they’d be wise to keep licensing. . I remember when the 2009 movie came out, more people than I had ever known were getting into it because of their availability.
Iâm thinking that ViacomCBS will use Pluto to build the audience by offering the classic five live-action series and TAS for free with its advertising based streamer.
Pluto is doing very well in Latin America and the European countries where it launched.
As based video seems a natural successor to the years of syndicated Trek reruns many of us grew up with.
Still, itâs a double-edged sword to have to put up with ads vs. just continue using the most popular streaming service. I totally get the point of hoarding IP, feeding content to competitors is largely only good for short term gains at the expense of controlling distribution, and ViacomCBS doesnât just have Paramount+ and Pluto to think about, it has its broadcast business which Netflix openly declared war on when it started producing original programming.
But I for one, if presented with the choice of Pluto or Netflix to get certain programming (especially a movie), would choose the latter every time, despite the price. Iâm lucky to have that disposable income, but we have been lucky that CBS licensed Trek out so liberally a decade ago.
I don’t really want to shell out for Paramount+, until they have reliable new Trek content. Since I don’t own Enterprise or Voyager in a hard copy format, this is disappointing. So long as it’s still available on Amazon Prime though, I guess I’m okay. Those days seem numbered too though.
This happens as the streaming license is near its end. Plenty of time for Netflix and Paramount to renew the license. I really doubt very old episodes of ST is going to get more people subscribing to Paramount +.
Does Paramount+ have TOS with the original effects?
I wish, it bothers me I have to watch the crap CGI
They should have both if they’re going to be the home of STAR TREK. Right now I think Amazon Prime has both (the original and remastered).
Amazon does have both, thank you for pointing that out!
For quite awhile, Amazon was also the only place to get uncut Voyager season 5, everyone else had the US cuts which deleted scenes after delivery when UPN added more commercials mid-season.
It’s funny, I’ve had Amazon Prime for several years but I barely watch anything on it. Perhaps I should start!
Buy the BD. Then you will get a choice.
Whoa! Well⊠there we go. I think many of us had long wondered whether theyâd continue to license the old stuff to other services indefinitely (non-exclusively, of course). Now we know.
Honestly, I can see benefits to either offering (non-exclusive) licenses for the older shows and movies to alternate services like Netflix, or bringing everything in-house to be exclusive to Paramount+; both paths can be part of viable strategies. Obviously, pulling everything back home makes P+ that much more of a vital, must-have service for fans of this franchise (the same way Disney+ is for fans of Marvel or Star Wars , say). OTOH, I could see having non-exclusive licenses for Trek being not only a great way to make more money from a variety of sources on the back catalogue, but also helping ensure the longevity of the franchise by making it easier for newcomers to the franchise to discover it and get hooked. Presumably Viacom has data indicating which is likelier to be more lucrative in the long-term.
Like others, though, Iâm personally a bit disappointed. I have P+ for the new stuff, of course, but for streaming the older shows, I tend to prefer Netflix, simply because the interface is more comfortable, or even putting in physical discs like your great-great-great-great-grandfather used to. I guess eventually Iâll watch everything on P+, but man, Star Trek just felt like such a mainstay on Netflix for so long. Iâm going to miss having it there.
Internationally it makes sense for them to keep selling the rights to new trek at least to other streaming services. Its their most expensive streaming franchise and they need the biggest return on it.
Paramount+ launched in Australia this month and there is no way they would make the same money streaming it themselves as they do selling it to the bigger services. I imagine after a few years of growth the new and old series will return home, if Paramount+ manages to gain a customer bases here.
But right now its early days
Rats, I am gonna miss the convenience of Trek on Netflix, it’s by far the most user-friendly of the streamers, light years ahead of P+. What always bothered me, though, was the “thumbnail” and “preview” for TOS – while other shows have carefully-crafted promos to hook you in, TOS had a poorly-formatted and boring clip from The Cage. Also all the thumbnail images for the episodes are of people, often very boring shots, which to me doesn’t seem very intuitive, considering a sci-fi show like Star Trek is often identified for its sci-fi imagery. I’d rather see a Gorn, the Fesarius, the Tholian Web in the thumbnail than some generic conference room still of the crew. It really feels like the people at Netflix have no idea how to make Star Trek look appealing.
I hate that DS9âs thumbnail on P+ is the only one that doesnât feature the captain.
Man, I have Netflix almost just for the Star Trek content.
I would have no problem with this if Paramount+ had a better user interface. At least their streaming capacity is better these days.
One of the reasons my physical DVDs and BluRay are not going anywhere. I have ripped all my discs to hard drive, so it’s pretty convenient to watch Trek (and my other faves) as and when without having them suddenly disappear off the streaming services I subscribe to. But nothing beats physical media when it comes to picture and sound quality, which is still far better than anything ripped or available on streaming.
Actually very happy that they are finally starting to go exclusive to Paramount Plus. This makes getting a subscription a no brainer now as a diehard Trekkie. It was hard to justify subscribing year round to basically just to watch one show (because no new Trek overlaps, and during Covid there’s been big gaps). It also has Twilight Zone and old Trek, but I also had Amazon for those, and I get so much more on Amazon.
If Paramount Plus eventually becomes the exclusive home for Trek (and likely TZ too at some point)– and they now add the Paramount movie catalog, and make more new originals, it becomes all the more easier justify the $10 a month on top of Amazon (the only service I currently have)– or even to cancel Amazon entirely.
I am considering Disney Plus too at some point, but probably not until next year, when Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms Marvel, and Secret Invasion have released. Right now i’m happy to drive to my father’s place and watch those shows with him (which has been a nice tradition during Covid).
I was planning to start watching all of Star Trek on Netflix this weekend, which will take several weeks to complete. I’m outside the US, I just hope I have time to watch it all before they remove it here too.
So many Streaming Sites to choose from and all have a cost. I’ve Netflix and Disney+ and I am happy with these two. They have everything I need. But when Paramount+ goes international I am considering adding it to my list.
I’m glad I dropped Netflix 4 years ago. First they dropped MASH, then they dropped Cheers and now Star Trek. Netflix isn’t worth it any longer.
I think that Netflix will be losing the DC shows soon as well. Well, I still like Netflix’s documentaries, the The Toys that Made Us and the Movies that Made Us.
To be fair, they aren’t dropping Star Trek, the license holder — Paramount in this case — is pulling the show from Netflix for their own platform.
Glad I still have my DVDs and Blurays of everything.
So Iâll go back to the downloaded copies. Paramount+ or whatever theyâll call it next is ridiculous garbage.
My favorite shows are leaving I see it all the time
It’s not that disappointing because I have all the episodes of the first two series my favorites, which means now I will have to get the rest, which I had planned to do, anyhow!
Is the same happening on Netflix in Canada?
The shows are on BellMediaâs Crave in Canada.
Would be nice if we got some of the other TREK series streaming on PLUTO TV (owned by ViacomCBS) All we get is the THE NEXT GENERATION and it’s the same handful of episodes over-and-over!
Will this apply to Netflix UK (where we donât have Paramount+)?
Not that big a deal. I have TOS discs and two seasons of Enterprise. Only DS9 would be a bit annoying as I am waiting (possibly forever) for DS9 on Blu ray. I don’t rely on streaming if it is something I want to see more than once.
I subscribed to Netflix 10 years ago, then I sold my Star Trek DVD collection. I may hold on to the subscription until they drop TNG and DS9, but I will definitely be unsubscribing from Netflix because of Star Trek.

Star Trek: Discovery is leaving Netflix tonight before heading to Paramount Plus
For international viewers, itâll now live on paramount plus.

Paramount Plus is grabbing back its Star Trek: Discovery series from Netflix, where itâs been streaming to international viewers for three seasons.
The series lived on Paramount Plus (fka CBS All Access) for US viewers and on Canadaâs CTV Sci-Fi Channel, but the move will bring old and future seasons of the series under a single streaming umbrella for folks outside of those regions. Season 4 of Discovery had previously been set to debut on Paramount Plus in the US, CTV Sci-Fi Channel, and on Netflix elsewhere on November 18th.Â
The show will leave Netflix at 12AM PT in regions where it had previously been available to stream. (It will remain on Bell Mediaâs CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on the Crave in Canada.) All seasons of the show will become available to international viewers in 2022, the company confirmed to The Verge . Deadline earlier reported the news.
The plan to grab back some of its IP comes as the company focuses on a wider international expansion heading into next year.
âAs we rapidly expand our global streaming footprint, we are bringing more of our top titles home to ViacomCBS for Paramount+ markets around the world,â Kelly Day, president of streaming for ViacomCBS Networks International, said in a statement. âWe have a strong global and local content pipeline that positions us for success across our regions, and repatriating beloved series like Star Trek: Discovery for Paramount+ is another step forward as we bring fans more must-watch series worldwide.â
According to the company, Star Trek: Discovery will become available internationally to Paramount Plus subscribers in 2022 in regions where the service is currently available. Paramount Plus is currently available in 25 countries but says it plans to expand to 45 markets by the end of next year.Â
Uniting â for the most part â its Discovery series in a single hub for international audiences doesnât quite fix the fractured state of the sprawling Star Trek library, however. Star Trek: Picard will still be on Amazon for streamers outside Canada and the US. As stated, Star Trek: Discovery will continue to stream on non-Paramount Plus channels in Canada. And lastly, Star Trek: Lower Decks will stay on Amazon outside of Latin America, Canada, and the US.

Netflix says goodbye to Star Trek for good with the loss of Deep Space Nine
Star Trek Deep Space Nine is leaving Netflix in July — here’s how to watch it afterwards
Star Trek fans out there might want to give Netflix the boot once July rolls around. Paramount Plus has slowly been reclaiming the rights to various Trek shows since 2019, and now it’s managed to grab the very last one: Deep Space Nine.
Deep Space Nine first hit Netflix back in 2011, when Netflix acquired the rights to all five live-action Star Trek shows that existed at the time. But that era is now coming to an end, and the last day U.S. viewers will be able to watch Deep Space Nine on Netflix is June 30.
Deep Space Nine was something of a departure for the Star Trek franchise. The show was controversial at the time, given its focus on a much bleaker version of the future than had been seen in previous series. It also opted for a more serialized approach to its storytelling, which was almost unheard of in the days before streaming and catch-up services.
Still Deep Space Nine was received well enough to run for a full seven seasons, and has picked up a dedicated following in the 20+ years since it went off the air.
The news that the show is leaving Netflix was no major surprise. Star Trek is one of Paramount’s tentpole franchises, which is reflected in the fact we now have five ongoing Star Trek shows: Discovery , Picard , Lower Decks , Prodigy and the newly-minted Strange New Worlds .
It’s understandable that the network would want to bring all of Star Trek into the fold, but that doesn’t mean it stings any less.
The great Star Trek reclamation began in October 2019, when Star Trek: The Animated Series made the voyage home. October 2021 saw The Original Series and Voyager make the same journey, followed by The Next Generation in April 2022.

Following the departure of Deep Space Nine, the only piece of Star Trek canon that Paramount doesn’t have is the 2009 reboot — as directed by JJ Abrams. It’s not entirely clear who has the rights to that, but it certainly isn’t Netflix.
Currently international streaming rights are unaffected, and Netflix still holds the rights to classic Star Trek outside North America. The only exception is The Animated Series. However, with international launch of Paramount Plus scheduled for the U.K. and Europe, it’s likely that history will eventually repeat itself overseas.
Until that happens there’s always the option for U.S. Netflix subscribers to use a virtual private network, or VPN, which are legal, inexpensive and easy to use. Though we should point out that using one would technically put you in breach of Netflix's terms and conditions.
We've tested all the best VPN services, and right now our favourite is ExpressVPN . It's fast, works on loads of devices and even offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Safety, speed and simplicity combine to make ExpressVPN our favorite VPN service. It's also compatible with loads of devices and there's a 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to try it out.
Using a VPN is incredibly simple.
1. Install the VPN of your choice . As we've said, ExpressVPN is our favorite.
2. Choose the location you wish to connect to in the VPN app. For instance if you're in the U.S. and want to access the U.K. Netflix catalogue, you'd select United Kingdom from the list.
3. Sit back and enjoy the action. Head over to Netflix and search for your favorite Star Trek series, because U.K. Netflix has all the good ones.

Four Star Trek titles leaving Netflix in September, where to watch them
Netflix is removing three Star Trek television series and a movie from its platform in September.
As the streaming war heats up, large media companies build competitive services; therefore, they are not relicensing their content with Netflix.
With the launch of Disney+, Netflix canceled all their Marvel interconnected series, such as Luke Cage and Iron Fist, by 2019.
With another streaming giant emerging, Netflix will no longer license another popular franchise.
By the end of September, Netflix will be removing Star Trek: Seasons 1-3, Star Trek: Enterprise: Seasons 1-4, and Star Trek: Voyager: Seasons 1-7. The popular 2009 Star Trek feature film will also be removed from the platform.
However, it isn’t all bad news. Certain iconic sci-fi content will remain on Netflix in the meantime. This includes Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Paramount Plus will host Star Trek content
ViacomCBS’ streaming service Paramount Plus joins HBO, Peacock, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video as another major streaming platform.
With the launch of Paramount Plus, they announced several new Star Trek titles, such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy.
However, with the popularity of their classic television series being watched on Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix, it was only a matter of time before the licensing deals expired.
ViacomCBS has not officially announced that they will move their original titles in-house.
Following their launch of CBS All Access in 2017, now named Paramount Plus, they benefited from the Star Trek fanbase with a record number of signup, according to Deadline .
Therefore, the sci-fi series will be an important part of the companyâs overall strategy as is the case with Disney+ and the Star Wars franchise.
Will Star Trek titles be available in Netflix UK?
Paramount Plus will not launch internationally until 2022. Therefore, it is likely that Netflix and other streaming platforms will maintain their license for at least another year.
However, nothing has been confirmed regarding ViacomCBS’s international licensing strategy.
Star Trek: Discovery is still available in the UK and adds episodes weekly.
Star Trek: Enterprise, Voyager, and the feature film of the same name will be available on Netflix US until September 30.
F*** Viacom/CBS and F*** Netflix. This is unacceptable. Netflix was founded on the back of Star Trek streaming.

'Star Trek: Discovery' leaves Netflix just ahead of its new season
International fans will have to wait for paramount+ to be available in their countries next year..
The fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery was supposed to be available on Netflix a day after it premieres on Paramount+ in the US on November 18th, but that will no longer happen. In fact, fans outside the US and Canada will have to wait months to be able to see the new episodes â legally, that is â if they ever get the chance at all. According to Deadline , ViacomCBS has ended its deal with Netflix that had been in place since the series launched in 2017.
The publication says the money Netflix paid for the show's overseas rights paid for most of Discovery's hefty budget. Now that ViacomCBS has paid off the deal, it also pulled the entire show from Netflix. Apparently, it plans make the series available again to international fans in 2022 when Paramount+ goes global. The UK, Germany, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland will be among the first regions to get access to the streaming service next year. By the end of 2022, the service will be out in 45 countries, but as Gizmodo points out, that's still a tiny fraction of the 190 regions where Netflix is available.
Kelly Day, ViacomCBS Networks International streaming boss, told Deadline :
"As we rapidly expand our global streaming footprint, we are bringing more of our top titles home to ViacomCBS for Paramount+ markets around the world. We have a strong global and local content pipeline that positions us for success across our regions, and repatriating beloved series like Star Trek: Discovery for Paramount+ is another step forward as we bring fans more must-watch series worldwide."
In a tweet, the show's official account said that the fourth season will still premiere on Paramount+ on November 18th in the US. Meanwhile, it will arrive on CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada on the same day and will be available for streaming in the country on Crave the day after.

Star Trek fans have been left raging after Netflix removed Discovery from their streaming service around the world two days before the hotly anticipated fourth season was about to air.
For weeks, Star Trek fans have been getting hyped about the upcoming fourth season â which will see the crew of the USS Discovery investigating a galaxy-wide phenomenon that disrupts gravity and causes destruction.
And while the makers of the show have been gleefully teasing fans with a countdown to the new season, disaster has struck for millions of fans as bosses have forced Netflix to remove the show from their service.
The brains behind Star Trek are making the show only available via Paramount Plus â a streaming service that currently only exists inside the USA.
While Discovery normally airs in the USA via Paramount + and then streams elsewhere in the world via Netflix the following day, fans will now have to wait until an unspecified date in 2022 for the show to be available when the Paramount Plus service becomes available outside the USA.
Deadline reported details of the move, writing: âIn a just-closed deal between ViacomCBS and Netflix, the Shari Redstone-controlled company has ended the lucrative financial arrangement that launched Discovery back in 2017.
âIn broad strokes, the bargain that then-CBS head honcho Les Moonves made with Netflix saw the latter paying the vast majority of Discoveryâs hefty budget for the overseas rights.
âWith the top-tier IP fully back in the fold, the plan is for Discovery to take flight on Paramount+ around the globe starting next year.â
Seasons one to three of Discovery have also been removed from Netflix â with the bombshell being announced only yesterday and coming into effect today.
Fans of the series have taken to social media to blast the decision and collectively shake their bat'lethâs, sounding more enraged than a dinner deprived Klingon targ.
One fan raged via Twitter : âWell. This is stupid. Instead of doing the logical thing of removing Star Trek Discovery after Paramount Plus launches overseas, they remove it while it is unavailable overseas from a streaming platform almost everyone has. Guess there is a first for Trek then.â
Another blasted: âWhy couldnât this of been announced with a little more notice? Absolutely gutted!!â
Others feared this is the beginning of all versions of Star Trek being removed from streaming services â as The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise and The Original Series all also air on Netflix, while Picard and Lower Decks stream via Amazon.
One fan tweeted: âDidnât they say they were pulling all Star Trek series from Netflix? Without having an alternative in place to watch these series outside the US, the is a very silly move for the health of the franchise @paramountplus @StarTrek Fans have long memories.â
While others have vowed to illegally stream Discovery season four and refuse to sign up to âyer another streaming serviceâ when Paramount + expands beyond the USA next year.
One incensed fan wrote on Instagram : âThis is ridiculous â literally pushing people to stream it illegally.â
The cast of Discovery seem equally gutted â with show star Emily Coutts, who plays Keyla Detmer, taking to Twitter in the aftermath of the showâs news to write: âto all of our international fans, we love you,â alongside a red heart emoji.
Viewers in Canada will also still be able to watch the show via on CTV Sci Fi / Crave.
Star Trek Discovery season four airs in the USA and Canada only from November 18.

Skydance Still In Pole Position For Paramount As Two Hash Out Terms; Sony & Apollo Waiting In The Wings
The UK, Germany, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland will be among the first markets to stream Discovery on Paramount+ of the more than 20 countries the platform is available in outside of North America. ViacomCBS has said that as part of an accelerated expansion, it anticipates being in about 45 markets within the next year or so – and, of course, a high-profile brand like Star Trek will lead that charge.
In Canada, Discovery will stay on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streams on Crave under the long-standing deal with the northern broadcaster.
No details were given of the deal that ViacomCBS and Netflix struck for the first three seasons of Discovery , but we hear it was in the healthy six figures. The arrangement removes any stake that Netflix had in the series.
There is a timely quality to the new deal as Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery is set to kick off November 18 on Paramount+ in the States.
“As we rapidly expand our global streaming footprint, we are bringing more of our top titles home to ViacomCBS for Paramount+ markets around the world,” ViacomCBS Networks International streaming boss Kelly Day told Deadline today. “We have a strong global and local content pipeline that positions us for success across our regions, and repatriating beloved series like Star Trek: Discovery for Paramount+ is another step forward as we bring fans more must-watch series worldwide.”
Like a lot of media companies, CBS and Viacom — separately and since their reunion in late-2019 — have looked for opportunities to reduce costs as they ramp up streaming originals. Star Trek series had output deals with various parties, including Bell in Canada and Amazon and Netflix in much of the world. But CBS All Access was rebranded as Paramount+ in March, and its offerings expanded and went global starting over the summer.
Earlier this month, ViacomCBS reported having nearly 47 million streaming subscribers across all of its services. It hasn’t yet broken out specific numbers for Paramount+. In a move seen as a sign of the difficulty of expanding streaming across the entire world, ViacomCBS formed a joint venture with Comcast for the Sky Showtime platform, which is set to launch in Europe.
While Star Trek: Picard will still be on Amazon outside of North America and Star Trek: Lower Decks will be on the Jeff Bezos owned streamer outside the U.S., Canada and Latin America, the Starfleet shift off Netflix was hinted at earlier this year. Back at the end of September, Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise all left the streamer.
Now we know where the true final frontier is.

Netflix removes ‘star trek iii’ to make aliens easier to understand.
'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' is no longer available on Netflix's Watch Instantly service because, according to one report, the company felt the need to ensure that everyone could tell what the Klingons were saying.

Netflix World Domination - H 2013
We all know what it’s like. Sometimes all you want to do is go home, relax and stick Star Trek III: The Search for Spock on Netflix streaming so that you can recuperate from the day with an epic tale of friendship that transcends death (and rebirth). Only problem with that plan right now is, Netflix has temporarily removed Star Trek III from its streaming service. The reason why? Vulcan and Klingon linguistics.
Apparently, the version of Star Trek III that had previously been available on Netflix Watch Instantly didn’t have the correct subtitling for the Klingon and Vulcan language scenes. While that doesn’t seem like a big deal to most of us — they are, after all, made-up languages — it seems that Netflix disagrees and has taken the movie offline in order to create more accurate translated subtitles , according to a report in the British Radio Times.
RELATED: Comic-Con: Hasbro Unveiling a New ‘Star Trek’ Kre-O Set
Unusually, the report continues, Netflix is planning to translate the dialogue itself, as opposed to lifting the existing subtitles from earlier home releases of the movie. This either means that (a) the Netflix WI version of The Search for Spock will have the most impressively accurate Klingon and Vulcan subtitles ever or (b) Netflix is a fan of creating unnecessary work for itself. Not that both things can’t be simultaneously true, of course.
The movie is expected back on the site within a week. Everyone: Prepare your English-Klingon dictionaries for the finished product, just to ensure quality control.

Was Star Trek: Lower Decks cancelled because it's an adult-themed cartoon?
S tar Trek have ventured into animation three times in the past fifty-one years with Star Trek: The Animated Series debuting in 1973, Star Trek: Lower Decks debuting in 2020, and Star Trek: Prodigy making its first appearance in 2021. The Animated Series was cancelled after two seasons with Prodigy being cancelled after one before Netflix picked it up. The recent cancellation of Lower Decks after season five, though, has caused some speculation about the reasons behind it and if it had anything to do with the style of the series.
TV Fanatic speculates that Lower Decks may be ending because of its adult-themed humor and slapstick comedy with the writer, Jason Collins, adding that the cancellation "may follow the trend of networks and streaming services canceling adult-themed cartoons for various reasons. "
It's true that Lower Decks offered humor that the other Trek series didn't, but the newer series have started using language that the older shows didn't as well. That's just a sign of the times, so to speak. Way back when, strong language couldn't be used on network television, but streaming opens up more possibilities. It's not usual to hear four letter words and jokes that you might not say in a crowded room.
But Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman both called five seasons a miracle in the current landscape of shows. Star Trek: Discovery was cancelled after five seasons as well, and so it stands to reason that the ending of Lower Decks is more due to current Star Trek practices.
Yes, there are fans who don't like Lower Decks' brand of humor or its focus on comedy rather than drama . There are also fans that do not like to hear some of Star Trek's greats like Patrick Stewart dropping the F-bomb. But unwanted curse words and questionable jokes haven't dissuaded all the viewers. If that was the case, many current shows on streaming networks wouldn't last more than a season.
While it's true that things are different with the Star Trek franchise, there are plenty of Trek fans that enjoy the Rick and Morty type of cartoons and embraced Lower Decks for what it was. Was it for everyone? Of course not, but neither was Star Trek: Picard or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Lower Decks simply filled a niche that had not yet been filled by another Trek series. And many fans are sad to see it go.

A 57-Year-Old Star Trek Mystery Has Finally Been Solved
The final season of Star Trek: Discovery just solved a franchise mystery that's been left open since a classic episode of The Original Series aired.
- Nearly 60 years ago, Star Trek: The Original Series introduced the Mirror Universe.
- Star Trek: Discovery returned to that parallel dimension in Season 1, showing audiences more of that world.
- In the final season of Star Trek: Discovery, the fate of a key vessel in the mirror universe is revealed.
The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery , Season 5, Episode 5, "Mirrors," now streaming on Paramount+ .
One of the most interesting concepts in the Star Trek mythology is its "mirror universe," a parallel dimension where almost everyone is evil. Of the universe's dozen series, only four ever explored it, and only two did so more than once. Star Trek: Discovery made the mirror universe key to its first season, and in its final one, the series revealed what happened to the ISS Enterprise 57 years after it was first introduced. When the show first debuted, some long-time fans felt the crew and the captain were not in keeping with the tenor of proper Starfleet officers. However, Season 1 revealed Captain Lorca hailed from that universe , explaining why he seemed more "evil" than the typical starship captain.
Once the USS Discovery traveled through a wormhole to the 32nd Century, Dr. Kovich told Dr. Culber that the Mirror Universe and Prime Universe were too far apart for "crossings" to occur any longer. However, while on the hunt for the clues to the location of the Progenitors' technology, Captain Burnham and Cleveland "Book" Booker find a pocket of interdimensional space housing a vessel from the Mirror Universe. However, it's not any old starship, it is the ISS Enterprise last seen in "Mirror, Mirror" when the Prime Universe's Captain Kirk told Mirror Universe Spock it only took one good man to start a revolution. Once Star Trek: Deep Space Nine reintroduced the Mirror Universe, what happened to the ship was an open question Discovery just answered.
Where the Mirror Universe and the ISS Enterprise Came From
Star trek: discovery's mary wiseman, wilson cruz and blu del barrio hype finale.
When Gene Roddenberry put together his pitch for Star Trek 60 years ago in 1964, a loose idea of the Mirror Universe concept was on an early pitch document . The full concept came from writer Jerome Bixby, based on his decade-old short story "One Way Street." The writer said "the universe [he] created was a very savage counterpart" and that "it's arguable...the universe itself might be termed a 'character,'" in The Captain's Logs Supplemental by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman.
In "Mirror, Mirror," Kirk, Doctor McCoy, Uhura and Scotty are sent via transporter accident to the Mirror Universe. The episode is mostly about them trying to survive long enough to be returned to their own universe. However, Mirror Spock figures out the captain and crew aren't from his version of reality. So, he ends up helping them recreate the accident so they can return home. Tiberius Kirk and the evil versions of the crew are also sent back, but it's strongly implied that Spock will quickly take control from him.
In Star Trek: Enterprise , a two-part episode set in the Mirror Universe brought the USS Defiant from The Original Series episode "The Tholian Web" to the past. This helps explain why the ISS Enterprise is so much like the Constitution class vessels from the prime universe. Each starship is also equipped with a Tantalus Field, a mysterious device that makes a captain's enemies vanish. Presumably, Spock used the vessel to start his revolution, and Deep Space Nine reveals how it all turned out. Yet, what happened to the ISS Enterprise remained a mystery, until "Mirrors."
The USS Discovery's Search for Clues Led Burnham to the Enterprise
Star trek: discovery's alex kurtzman & michelle paradise talk final season.
Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery crew are familiar with the USS Enterprise, though Captain Christopher Pike was her commanding officer then. After surviving the Time Bug placed on the ship by Moll, Burnham and Book take a shuttle into an "aperture" of extradimensional space to follow their ship's warp trail. When they enter it, Burnham recognizes the ship, but tells Book that during her time in the Mirror Universe in Season 1, she never saw that particular vessel. The ship has been stuck there for some time, and it's damaged. Not just from the pocket dimension it sits in, but it had been in a battle.
When Burnham and Book board the vessel, they discover something surprising. Rather than a Terran warship, they see the ISS Enterprise seemingly serving as a home to refugees . After restoring some power to the ship, they are able to locate Moll, L'ak and the clue they seek by scanning for the quantum signature of people and objects from the prime universe. A short fight breaks out, but circumstances align so that Moll and Booker have to work together to free L'ak and Michael from a security protocol.
When L'ak and Michael fight, she's able to get the clue and she, accidentally, wounds the Breen exile. Moll and L'ak escape in the shuttle Michael and Book arrived on, so they have to figure out a way to get the ISS Enterprise out of the extradimensional space it was marooned in so long ago. Naturally, they succeed with the help of quick-thinking by Commander Rayner on the USS Discovery. What's most interesting, however, is that throughout this adventure no one really wonders just how the clue from the Prime Universe ended up on the flagship of the Terran Empire.
Deep Space Nine Revealed the Fate of Spock's Terran Empire
Star trek: discovery actors doug jones & david ajala prepare for their last adventure.
The first show to return to the Mirror Universe was the first serialized Star Trek , Deep Space Nine in Season 2, Episode 23, "Crossover." Naturally, because that series was set on the space station close to the planet Bajor, this was the corner of the Mirror Universe that the episode (and its many sequels over seven seasons) explored. Rather than the jingoistic rules of the Terran Empire, however, humans were an oppressed class working the ore processing facilities on the Deep Space 9 station. It was ruled by an alliance of Klingons, Cardassians and Bajorans.
Kira Nerys met her counterpart, the leader of the station known as "the Intendant." She explained to her what happened after the real Captain Kirk transported back to his universe. Spock used the ISS Enterprise to become Chancellor of the former Empire, all the while making institutional reformations that made the society more peaceful and equitable. However, after years of being oppressed by the Terrans, the Klingon and Cardassian alliance was able to launch a successful campaign against them.
Still, Deep Space Nine left the ultimate fate of the Terran Empire -- and, more specifically, the ISS Enterprise -- an open question . In fact, Intendant Kira never really clarified when the Terran Empire fell, beyond saying that Spock's reforms began "almost a century ago." Still, knowing that the Terran Empire fell under a brutal assault by Klingons and Cardassians , a picture starts to emerge about why the ISS Enterprise would have been a home for refugees and made the perilous, impossible journey across dimensions.
A Terran Refugee Hid the Clue In the ISS Enterprise In the 24th Century
Star trek: discovery's sonequa martin-green embarks on one final voyage.
At the end of "Mirrors," Michael Burnham reveals the scientist who hid the clue on the ISS Enterprise was able to do so because she was, herself, a Terran . Some time before The Next Generation's "The Chase," she and a group of refugees fled the ISS Enterprise in shuttles and made their way into the Prime Universe. From there, many of them made homes in the Federation, and this particular scientist was the Junior Science Officer on the ISS Enterprise, Dr. Cho.
This means the Terran refugees fled the Mirror Universe sometime before the events of "The Chase." Yet, it was close enough to those events that Dr. Cho was able to make her way back to the ship that carried her and her fellow immigrant in order to hide the clue there. As Booker notes in the episode, the clues to the Progenitors' technology each come with a lesson. In this case, Dr. Cho wanted to subtly teach the searchers who followed her that things can always get better. She went from being a Terran scientist to a Branch Admiral in Starfleet. It's kind of like Starfleet's first mutineer becoming the captain of the first vessel on which she served afterward.
No matter the timeline or universe, the Enterprise is an important, historic vessel. The ISS Enterprise was a warship that brought fear and terror to whomever it visited. At least, until a man named Kirk told a man named Spock there was a better choice to make. In its final season, Star Trek: Discovery has found yet another way to tie its story into the fabric of the universe's past and the message Gene Roddenberry and all those who followed him wanted to give the audience. Things can always be better, but it takes people making the right choices to get there.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5 Review – Mirrors
Star Trek: Discovery reaches the halfway point of its final season by providing the L'ak and Moll backstory no one asked for.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5
Star Trek: Discovery reaches the midpoint of its final season with âMirrors,â an hour that is probably the worst of the five installments weâve seen so far. To be clear, the episode isnât necessarily bad , per se, and those whoâve been with this show since the beginning have definitely sat through much worse than this during its run. But it is an hour that, at best, is pretty darn boring, and that canât help but feel like a colossal waste of time when we have so few hours left with the characters whose stories we care about.
Look, most of us ( read: me ) expected this season to include a flashback-laden hour that explained the very obviously telegraphed, clearly semi-tragic backstory of the seasonâs villains, intended to make us reevaluate how we feel about their quest to find the Progenitorsâ technology. But Moll and Lâak have been such poorly sketched adversaries so far that itâs extremely difficult for the show to suddenly turn them into characters we care about or build a relationship between them that weâre invested in. After all, itâs hard to sell a desperate star-crossed love story between two characters weâve spent such little time with and barely know, and who have generally been huge jerks every time they do appear on our screens.
(Donât get me wrong, I like Book just fine, and I adore his relationship with Michael, but I donât think he’s an important enough character to make his vaguely tenuous familial connection to Moll as compelling as the show seems to think it ought to be.)
Ad – content continues below
Itâs a shame that so much of this hour is dedicated to providing a backstory no one really asked for, because its general premise is actually super interesting. Still on the hunt for the location of the Progenitorsâ mysterious device, Discovery tracks Moll and Lâakâs ship into a wormhole-like anomaly that leads to a pocket of interdimensional space where the next clue is supposedly hidden. (These scientists from back in the day put in work to hide whatever this thing is, is what Iâm saying.) Burnham and Book take a shuttle inside itâat least one of its primary commanders stays on the ship this timeâwhere they find the Terran I.S.S. Enterprise , the Mirror Universe version of the famous starship thatâs been damaged and abandoned.
I doubt Iâm the only person who wants to know more about the Terrans who were once on board this ship, why they decided to flee to our universe, or how the Mirror Universe version of Saruâostensibly the same one Michael taught how to fight seasons agoâhelped lead them to safety. I mean, I just have so many questions: When did this happen? How long has this Enterprise been abandoned in interdimensional space? (It had to be some time after Michael and Discovery jumped to the future, since the Mirror Universe Enterprise had to remain in its own dimension long enough for the Star Trek: The Original Series episode âMirror, Mirrorâ to take place, right?) Were there two Sarus in this universe at any point? Did any of the Mirror Universe Enterprise crew cross over as refugees? Weâll likely never know but Iâm curious anyway. I also have questions about how the folks hiding all these clues in the first place determined this was a must-have hiding spot, but very little about this puzzle quest has made all that much sense, so letâs just go with it.
Itâs unfortunate that the Terran Enterprise connection is so much more intriguing than the hourâs big reveal, which is that Lâak is a member of the Breen, and he and Moll have a blood bounty on their heads. The Breen are an alien species with both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine origins, and whose faces weâve never seen onscreen before . Their culture is reclusive and mysterious and this twist should be so much more compelling than the catalyst for a star-crossed Romeo & Juliet-style romance with a little overt grifting thrown on top. Â
A courier delivering dilithium to the Breen in the wake of the Burn, Mollâs cutting her shipments with other materials to make more money. She offers to bring disgraced royal Lâak into her scheme, to give him a chance to get payback against the uncle who demoted him because he was too different from the rest. How was he different? Why did that matter? Shrug emoji. He accepts and flirting ensues.
Before you know it, theyâre having allegedly meaningful conversations about âtrue facesâ and performing The Mandalorian – style slo-mo helmet removals alongside their scammer delivery runs. But of course, they eventually get caught, and now theyâre being eternally hunted by very talented trained killers and have to hope that they can trade the Progenitor tech for their lives. This is not a great planâas Michael correctly points out the Breen will probably just take their world-destroying tech and kill them anyway if they make it that farâbut itâs the one theyâre going with.
On the plus side, âMirrorsâ is the best Book and Burnham episode weâve had in a while. A solid reminder of how good they are as a team, both tactically and emotionallyâMichaelâs unexpected reminiscing about Spock was lovely, as was the bittersweet moment between them when they both thought they were likely to die trying to get out of the wormhole. Beyond the whole Book committing some light treason last season thing, which itâs clear Michael (and the Federation writ large) has forgiven him for, itâs not entirely clear why the two of them arenât together right now beyond the need for dramatic tension between them. And since the show could not be telegraphing that reunion any harder, maybe itâs just time to cut to the chase where the two of them are concerned.
Itâs obviously not Discovery âs fault that the folks in charge didnât know this was going to be the showâs final seasonâand a truncated run at thatâwhen they shot it. But itâs still hard not to feel a bit cheated here. This episode spends so much time on Moll and Lâak and their stilted declarations about how theyâd rather die than be separated from each other, all when there are a good half dozen other major characters whose stories Iâd rather be watching. And Iâm more than a little annoyed that I have to hear all about Mollâs weapons-grade daddy issues in stultifying detail when we could give that screentime to Tilly or Stamets or Culber or Saru, who all seem to be going through some pretty big life changes and emotional adjustments this season and whose individual journeys Iâm already invested in. These characters deserve better than this and we, as viewers, do too.

I Heard A Criticism About Star Trek Discovery That I Admittedly Don't Have An Answer For
As the series ends, I wrestle with this one.
Star Trek: Discovery is in its final season and, as I'm enjoying tuning in for the final episodes (accessible with a Paramount+ subscription ), I'm also looking back on the series' overall journey. Through various web searches I've seen lots of takes on the series that I've been aware of as well as a few I haven't seen before. While checking everything out, I was actually forced to confront a criticism that I admittedly don't have a clear answer for. And it's the fact that the series had a weird way of handling Michelle Yeoh 's "Mirror Georgiou."
It's a topic I feel is worth revisiting, given Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role for the an upcoming Trek movie , the highly anticpated Star Trek: Section 31 , which recently wrapped filming . Mirror Georgiou had a heavy presence in the first three seasons of the series, living publicly as the deceased Philippa Georgiou, and she was surprisingly treated as such. It was something I never thought was weird until now, and I have some thoughts on it.
What's The Issue Wth Star Trek: Discovery's Mirror Georgiou?
As an empress in the Terran universe, "Mirror Georgiou" enslaved and oversaw the murder of thousands of individuals if not more. Fans literally see her eat Kelpien, Saru's species, in Season 1. She's not a great person but, after being transferred to the Prime Universe and given a chance to be an asset in the Klingon war, she's given a chance to live a second life officially as her deceased counterpart.
While the character was officially re-introduced by Starfleet as Phillipa Georgiou and everyone in the know sworn to secrecy about the truth of her background, clues have slipped out in following seasons that more people know. Yet people tend to laugh off her threats and anger, as if she wasn't originally a murderous tyrant. Should we assume the characters set for the Section 31 film will act the same, or will operatives be a little colder than her Discovery shipmates?
Is Forgiving Georgiou More True To Star Trek Than Shunning Her?
Was Star Trek: Discovery wrong to write the crew's reaction to Georgiou the way it was? I don't have an answer for that, but it's worth noting that Starfleet regularly has to deal with species with laws and customs deemed unsavory by human standards. Hell, the Klingons are some of Starfleet's closest allies, and very little that they do when it comes to war would be considered humane.
Competent Starfleet officers must build up a resistance to judgment of things they don't understand, which could lend itself to more tolerance in dealing with Mirror Georgiou. Sure, she was a monster, but that monster is now a vital piece of the crew and helping Starfleet. Not everyone has to be happy with it, but they can perhaps compartmentalize it for the betterment of the regime.
Is Georgiou Redeemed Via Her Commitment To Starfleet?
As we prepare for Star Trek: Section 31 , which is confirmed to have a younger version of a Next Generation character , I can't help but wonder if the subject of Georgiou's redemption will come up. With Rachel Garrett in the mix, it seems unlikely that Georgiou will appear at a time when many of those who were previously aware of her Starfleet situation are still around. As such, her top-secret recorded record and true history may force her to prove she's worthy of a role in Section 31 and not better served with a life sentence in a penal colony.

As someone who argues Darth Vader was never redeemed in Star Wars , I see a lot of parallels between him and Mirror Georgiou. Both were tyrants who had good acts but, for the most part, there's a real question on whether any of that negates the vast number of horrific deeds they committed. Hopefully, we'll get some real answers about this in the upcoming movie, and not just more of people treating her with kid gloves.
Star Trek: Discovery 's final season streams new episodes on Thursdays on Paramount+ as part of the 2024 TV schedule . Georgiou is not in the mix in the final season thus far but, even if we don't see her there, we can all look forward to a re-introduction in Star Trek: Section 31 .

Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5 “Mirrors”
Star Trek: Discovery picks up immediately where â Face the Strange â left off, as our protagonists track their quarryâs ship to a hidden, interdimensional pocket of space that holds a few surprises for them and the audience.
Thanks to some sciencing from Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ) and Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ), Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) has a way to find where Moll ( Eve Harlow ) and Lâak ( Elias Toufexis ) are. Apparently, thereâs a wormhole hiding in plain sight near where Discovery lost track of the criminalsâ warp signature.
This wormhole is too small for a Crossfield- class ship to fit through, so Burnham and Cleveland Booker ( David Ajala ) â the latter of whom is on a mission to rehabilitate Moll, if possible â take a shuttle and see whatâs on the other side of the wormholeâs aperture. Find a surprise, they do indeed, as the I.S.S. Enterprise , the evil version of the heroic Starfleet ship, is nestled in the wormhole â albeit without its crew, which apparently evacuated the vessel at some point. Itâs beaten to hell and serves as a refuge for Moll and Lâak, whose own ship was destroyed by the interdimensional pocket of spaceâs destructive environment.
Discovery writers sure can be sneaky! Theyâve been foreshadowing the appearance of a Constitution -class for the last two episodes; remember when Gen Rhys ( Patrick Kwok-Choon ) and Commander Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) both remarked the Connie was their favorite ship? As weâll see, this isnât the last bit of foreshadowing that comes true in this episode.
“How did it end up in interdimensional space?” “I donât know. Must be one hell of a story.” – Book and Burnham upon seeing the I.S.S. Enterprise
Astute viewers will recognize an often-used cost-saving measure in the annals of Star Trek history: the reuse of sets from another concurrent show. (Seriously, rewatch TNG , DS9 , and Voyager and you’ll be surprised how often props and sets are reused between those shows.) As Burnham and Book explore various halls and rooms, including the bridge and sickbay, the familiar surroundings seen in Strange New Worlds are subtly transformed by Mirror Universe iconography. While nods to the iconic starship Enterprise are always appreciated, our initial reaction to this surprise locationâadmittedly tinged with pessimismâis that itâs of course itâs the Enterprise . A practical move, perhaps, to keep expenses in check. By Grabtharâs hammer⊠what a savings.
Finding the ship deserted sure is strange, and Burnham and Book ascertain Moll and Lâak are in sickbay, presumably with the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle. But first, the pair check out the transporter room, which holds some strange items, such as blankets, childrenâs toys, and a locket that holds a picture of two people, which Burnham inexplicably decides to take with her. Moreover, the dedication plaque of the I.S.S Enterprise tells the story of the ship and its crew: the Terran Universe emperor seemingly tried to make changes to the way things were done in that evil universe, and the Enterprise escaped and picked up refugees who were trying to flee the Terran Universe and enter the Prime Universe.
One of the leaders among those on the Enterprise was a Kelpien, who Burnham deduces must have been the Mirror Universe version of Saru, and that the crew must have fled the Enterprise once it got stuck in the interdimensional pocket of space. Is it just us, or does this sound like a potential episode of Strange New Worlds ?
Burnham, Book, Moll, and Lâak face off in sickbay, where Burnham makes a startling connection between Lâak and a particular dilemma he is facing. The criminal pair hope to use the Progenitor treasure to clear Lâakâs Breen blood bounty. Yes, Lâak is Breen, that enigmatic and masked species from Deep Space Nine . Neato!
The rest of the episode bounces between whatâs happening on the Enterprise , and flashing back to how Moll and Lâak first met and became romantically involved. Moll, the courier, would do business on the Breen space station on which Lâak, a member of a royal Breen family, was posted. The two connected over Lâakâs recent demotion and efforts to fight the embarrassment that came with it.
Over some time, the two became nearly inseparable, and Lâak even took the bold step with Moll by showing her his face â a big deal in Breen culture, as keeping their masks on allows them to retain their true, semi-transparent form, and not the solidified appearance weâve seen on Lâak. Their relationship is tested when Lâakâs superior (and uncle), Primarch Ruhn ( Tony Nappo ) decides to interrupt their courtship. Lâak doesnât take kindly to being asked to kill Moll, so the Breen turns on his own people, earns a Breen blood bounty, and flees with Moll. The pair now share a goal: earn enough latinum to retire on an (unnamed) fabled planet somewhere in the Gamma Quadrant, free from the trials and hardships of the courier life.
Suffice it to say, âMirrorsâ is most memorable because it casts a welcome light on the shadowed backstory of this seasonâs main villains. Moll and Lâak are now a relatable pair, star-crossed lovers who are hell-bent on earning themselves a happy ending. As much as we donât want to see the Progenitorsâ tech get into the wrong hands, who now doesnât want to see everything work out for Moll and Lâak?
Anyway, the quartet still need to get off the Enterprise , but the shuttle on which Burnham and Book arrived is destroyed by the turbulent pocket of space. With mere minutes to spare before the Enterprise is destroyed by the wormholeâs tiny aperture, Book and Moll share some last-minute words about their shared relationship with the late Cleveland Booker, and how Book hopes Moll makes the right choices regarding her quest for the Progenitor tech. Burnham, meanwhile, engages in a melee with Lâak, and the Breen ends up injured and inadvertently relinquishes control to Burnham of the next map piece in the Progenitor puzzle. The courier and disgraced Breen end up escaping the ship in a convenient Terran warp pod, leaving the chase between our heroes and enemies for another day.
“If we hit it precisely with a sequential hexagonal pattern, it should stay open for approximately sixty seconds. But once it collapses, itâs gone for good.” “Why hexagonal?” “Doesnât matter⊠itâll work.” â Adira ( Blu del Barrio ), Rayner, and Stamets as the crew finds a way to get the wormhole aperture bigger. We think this line from Stamets is reflective of the evolving working relationship between the results-orientated Rayner and the crew, and how this relationship is getting better the longer Rayner is first officer.
Burnham devises a novel way to signal her first officer for help in getting the Enterprise through the aperture: a pulsing tractor beam emitting from the Enterprise , shot through the wormholeâs opening, in a numerical sequence featured in a famous play from Kellerun culture. Rayner is then able to lead his crew to devise a way to pull the Enterprise into normal space.
The sequence where Rayner is faced with command of a ship tasked with the near-impossible rescue of his captain is the best of the episode. Itâs no secret Rayner was knocked down a few pegs after his demotion and reassignment to Discovery , but that lack of confidence and inner angst is demolished thanks to Rayner listening and working with his bridge crew to save the Enterprise . Plenty of lesser-known bridge officers get a say in how Discovery could help the Mirror ship, and lightning-fast decision-making shows Rayner back on his game.
The last element to note about this episode is some emotional trouble Doctor Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) is having. Tilly provides an outlet for this angst. Culber explains the experiences heâs had in the last few years â namely dying, coming back to life, and being a Trill host â really put into perspective the intellectual journey he is on in the face of the Progenitor’s quest. Tilly helps him realize he isnât only experiencing an intellectual quest, but a spiritual one. This conversation is just another instance of Discovery setting up some wild expectations for what the crew might ultimately discover at the end of the season â something beyond the bounds of science, perhaps?
Even though their prey gets away again, Burnham and her crew have the next clue in the Progenitor puzzle, and it is hiding in the I.S.S. Enterprise âs sickbay. Hidden in the map piece Burnham grabbed from Lâak is a vial, which Stamets will analyze soon. Burnham learns the crew who escaped from the I.S.S. Enterprise ended up in the Prime Universe and were able to start new lives. A Terran scientist aboard the Enterprise , Dr. Cho, ended up being a branch admiral, and weâre meant to assume she was one of the scientists on Dr. Vellekâs team hundreds of years ago as they studied the Progenitor tech. Dr. Cho then hid her piece of the Progenitor puzzle aboard her old ship as a symbolic gesture of her ability to find freedom in a new universe.
Discovery continues its final season with another thumbs-up episode that serves an important lore-building role in the franchise. Seeing the Breen again is a joy, especially since we were staring at one the whole time and never knew it. And how striking was that Breen space station where Lâak was based? Another important note for Star Trek historians is that now the Mirror Universe Enterprise is in the 32 nd century, and stationed near Earth thanks to Joann Owosekun and Keyla Detmer piloting the ship back to Federation space. Will we see that ship again this season?
As the Progenitor puzzle deepens, so do the emotional stakes for our crew, exemplified by Culber’s introspective journey, the subtle reignition of Book and Burnhamâs relationship, and Rayner’s triumphant return to leadership. Weâre now at the halfway point in this season, so thereâs still plenty of time for surprises, emotional consequences, and expectation-setting for this eagerly awaited treasure.
Stray Thoughts:
- Hopefully, youâre watching this episode with subtitles on, because goodness is it hard to hear what masked Breen says.
- The Mirror Universe version of the U.S.S. Enterprise was last seen in the Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror,” albeit this wasnât the Strange New Worlds version of the ship. Likewise, the Terran version of Spock, whom Booker asks if Burnham ever met, was in that same episode.
- How did Adira conclude they were the one who brought the time bug aboard Discovery ?
- Why didnât Burnham and Book try talking down Moll and Lâak before diving into the room with the holo-projected doubles?
New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery stream Thursdays on Paramount+ , this season stars Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland âBookâ Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Season five also features recurring guest stars Elias Toufexis (Lâak) and Eve Harlow (Moll).

Would discoveryâs book join star trek: starfleet academy "done dealâ, says david ajala.
Exclusive: Star Trek: Discovery's David Ajala says he would return as Cleveland Booker in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and so would Grudge.
- David Ajala is open to reprising his role as Cleveland Booker in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, as long as his cat Grudge is involved.
- In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Book assists Captain Michael Burnham in uncovering clues to the ancient Progenitors' treasure.
- Ajala jokes about Chancellor Grudge at Starfleet Academy, emphasizing the importance of respecting the Queen's name.
Star Trek: Discovery 's David Ajala says he would return as Cleveland Booker in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , but his cat Grudge has to come along, too. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season , and Book is playing a key role in helping Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) hunt for clues to the ancient treasure of the Progenitors. Although Grudge isn't seeing much action, the Queen is enjoying herself in Book's quarters on the USS Discovery as Cleveland and Michael do the dirty work.
In an exclusive upcoming interview with Screen Rant delving into Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors," talk turned to David Ajala's future as Cleveland Booker when Discovery ends. Here's what David said about reprising Book in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy :
Screen Rant: I'm gonna float an idea about you, and tell me what you think: Professor Cleveland Booker - Starfleet Academy.
David Ajala: Done deal. But you missed one key ingredient and feature: Professor Cleveland Booker and Grudge - Starfleet Academy.
Screen Rant: There you go.
David Ajala: I ain't trying to get no enemies out here, John. I need to make sure I put some respect on the Queen's name.
Screen Rant: Yes. I've got it: Chancellor Grudge - Starfleet Academy.
David Ajala: There you go. There you go. I love that. Done deal. Love that so much. And so will Grudge.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide
Starfleet academy is set in star trek: discovery's 32nd century, familiar faces from discovery like book and grudge could appear in starfleet academy.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is confirmed to be set in the 32nd century after Star Trek: Discovery. Starfleet Academy 's premise focuses on young cadets who dream of joining Starfleet but are also faced with fixing the mistakes of previous generations, as well as encountering a threat to the United Federation of Planets. Although no cast has been announced, it's logical to expect characters from Star Trek: Discovery to appear in the spinoff. Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) is already an instructor at Starfleet Academy.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will film on the largest sets ever constructed for Star Trek, and the school will be set in San Francisco.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 has a coda at the end that will wrap up the key stories of major characters, and it's safe to assume it will be the final word on the love story between Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker. However, Book in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy makes a lot of sense. Book is a former courier who has seen the galaxy , and his skills and expertise are valued by Starfleet. Book has a lot to teach Starfleet Academy cadets about resourcefulness, survival, and maintaining a moral code in a dangerous galaxy. Of course, Grudge would have to join Book if he appears in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The Queen would not settle for less.
