On this tour, we will visit Cerro de la Cruz, offering colorful views of the city, the Strait of Magellan, and Tierra del Fuego Island. Afterwards, we will head to Plaza Muñoz Gamero, which has been the heart of Punta Arenas since the late 19th century, bustling with activity and artisan stalls where you can purchase souvenirs. You can also admire the monument to Hernando de Magallanes and neoclassical buildings built by cattle ranching magnates. The tour continues with a visit to one of the interesting museums or the well-maintained cemetery of the city. Before returning to the hotel, the excursion also allows you to explore the northern sector of the city with its monuments, such as those dedicated to the shepherd, the Croatian immigrant, and oil

The city tour in Punta Arenas offers a wonderful exploration of this historically rich city located at the southern portion of Chile. Some of the important points of interest are:

Cerro de la Cruz: The tour often starts with a visit to Cerro de la Cruz, a hill that provides panoramic views of Punta Arenas, the Strait of Magellan, and the stunning landscape beyond. It’s an ideal spot for photographs and to get a sense of the city’s layout.

Plaza Muñoz Gamero: This central square has been a focal point of Punta Arenas since the late 19th century. It features the monument to Hernando de Magallanes, the famous explorer after whom the strait is named. The plaza is also surrounded by elegant neoclassical buildings, many of which were constructed by wealthy cattle ranchers during the city’s heyday.

Artisan Stalls and Souvenir Shopping: Plaza Muñoz Gamero is known for its bustling activity and artisan stalls, where you can browse and purchase local crafts, souvenirs, and traditional Chilean products.

Museums: Punta Arenas boasts several interesting museums that provide insight into the region’s history, culture, and natural heritage. Depending on the tour, you may have the opportunity to visit one of these museums to learn more about the area’s indigenous peoples, maritime history, or Antarctic exploration.

Cemetery Visit: The city tour may include a stop at the picturesque cemetery of Punta Arenas. This cemetery is renowned for its elaborate mausoleums, sculptures, and historic gravesites, offering a glimpse into the city’s past and its prominent families.

Monuments and Landmarks: As you explore different neighborhoods of Punta Arenas, you’ll encounter various monuments and landmarks that reflect the city’s diverse heritage. These may include statues honoring pioneers, immigrants, and industries that have shaped the region’s identity, such as sheep farming and oil extraction.

Punta Arenas: Historical & Cultural City Tour

Join us on this punta arenas shore excursion and discover the history and culture of this city on the strait of magellan with a private driver and guide.  visit a replica of the first ship to circumnavigate the world, museums, handicraft shops and look out points to view tierra del fuego..

Punta Arenas Skyline with Strait of Magellan

This exclusive tour is designed to allow you the chance to discover the most interesting sites in the area at your own pace with the comfort and privacy of your own vehicle, driver and English-speaking guide.

Nao Victoria Museum

Our first stop after being picked up at the cruise terminal is the Nao Victoria Museum, which offers visitors the experience of interacting with replicas of the ships that contributed to the discovery and colonization of the region, including the Victoria, part of an expedition commanded by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and was the first ship to circumnavigate the world between 1519-1522.

Patagonian Institute’s Museum of Memory (Closed on Sunday)

We then visit the Patagonian Institute’s Museo del Recuerdo (Museum of Memory), where pioneer days are made real again.  On display are a collection of antique farm and industrial machinery, a typical pioneer house and shearing shed, and a wooden-wheeled shepherds’ trailer.

Maggiorino Borgatello Museum (Closed on Monday)

Back in 1893, the Salesian missionaries that had settled in Punta Arenas headed by Father José Fagnano resolved to create a museum that represented the valuable cultural and ecological richness of the region. Thus, this institution named after its first director, Father Maggiorino Borgatello, was created. The museum is distributed into 4 levels which, in turn, are divided in sections, namely: ethnology, archaeology, history, and wildlife.  The objects and documents from the Salesian days, the handicrafts and tools made by the natives, along with the fossils and petrified animals from the area are also part of the display.

Sara Braun Municipal Cemetery

Afterwards, we visit the Sara Braun Municipal Cemetery. The cemetery tells the story of the early settlers to the area. The beautiful mausoleums of the wealthy rival those of the Recoleta in Buenos Aires.  Here you will find the tomb of the Indio Desconocido or “Unknown Indian.” His body was found on an island in 1929 and brought here. Rumors began that he had miraculous powers so people started leaving money at the grave asking for special favors. The money was collected and eventually a bronze statue was placed on his grave.  The last member of the Selk’nam indigenous tribe is also buried here.

Plaza de Armas Muñoz Gamero

Next stop, the city’s main plaza where you will find a statue of Ferdinand Magellan gazing out to the sea, which features a number of figures at its base, including a mermaid and an indigenous male whose leg and foot dangle down the base. His foot has been touched so often that the bronze is burnished a shining gold. Legend has it that touching his foot is good luck and means you will return someday to Punta Arenas.

After strolling around the plaza, which also contains various handicraft stands for souvenir shopping, we will head to the Costanera , a boardwalk along the Strait of Magellan.

Lookout at Cerro de la Cruz Hill

Then, we will drive to Cerro de la Cruz Hill, where you will enjoy panoramic views of the city and Strait of Magellan.  Here, you will have an opportunity to have lunch (not included).

  • Footprints641627 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best penguin tour I would HIGHLY recommend this tour. We had dolphins swimming beside us, saw whales, sea lions and penguins. We even rescued a couple stranded fishermen whose boat broke down. Once back on the cruise ship, we discovered we saw and were closer to penguins than the cruise tours. The crew was friendly, knowledgeable And helpful! Cant say enough good things. 5 stars!!! Read more Written February 25, 2024

  • barbsmartinez 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A must do! The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. The information they provided was good and helped us to understand the area better. As a local provider they have their own transportation and boat if that’s something you look for. They were very forgiving on the check in time since our tender from our cruise had difficulties and made us late but they had sent some people ahead and left a driver to pick up people that arrived a bit later. The experience was once in a lifetime and we enjoyed it immensely. If you get seasick make sure to take something since several people felt sick on the ride there. But the tea they offer helped settle my stomach. If the weather broadcast says rain make sure you dress up appropriately since we got drenched when we arrived at Magdalena Island. • TomK9000 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles We wasted a day, waiting for boats that arrive too late Our tour was not able to make it out to Magdalena Island. The wind was so strong the boats we needed from the morning tour returned back two hours late. Several of those passengers got sick on the boat due to the winds and the waves. Given the late start, it was questionable that boats would return on time for us to make it back on our cruise ship, should we want to brave the winds and the waves. The tour operator gave us a partial refund. I would not recommend this tour until the operator gets larger boats than are capable of managing the wind and waves that often occur in that area. • L6747TFbenm 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles DO NOT TAKE THIS TOUR IF YOU ARE ON A CRUISE SHIP This was the worst experience I have had with a tour company. If you are on a cruise ship and thinking of taking this tour, I strongly recommend you look elsewhere. I took this tour on 12/29/23 along with roughly 40 guests from the Celebrity ship (which I was also on), plus a number of folks that were in Punta Arenas but not on the ship. I knew the excursion could be canceled due to weather, so I was excited when they had us board the bus and head to the ferry pier. Surely we were going to see penguins! Well, when we got to the ferry pier the ferry was nowhere in site. We sat for 30 minutes and the driver had said nothing to us. He didn't speak any English, but he didn't even try to make an announcement in Spanish. Finally, a guest asked what was going on and we found out that we were waiting on the ferry, and once we saw it on the horizon we had 30 minutes until it was at the pier. This was concerning as the excursion was supposed to end at 3 pm and last tender was at 4:15 pm so we didn't have much time. Another 30 minutes passed and the cruisers started doing the math and realized we were not going to be able to do the tour. Strangely, the driver fought us on that, saying we had time. We waited an additional 30 minutes and finally the ferry showed up. By this point we DEFINITELY did not have time to complete the tour, which was confirmed by the ferry captain who said he could only get us back to the ferry pier by 4:00 pm (there was an additional 45 minute bus ride back to the city) so we would miss last tender if we went on the tour. The bus driver agreed to drive the Celebrity cruisers back while the people staying in town went on the ferry. This is where things got really weird and the tour company started victim blaming. We reached the office and asked for our refunds, figuring the tour company would want a list of people who couldn't go for their records. They didn't take any of our names, instead waived us away saying to deal with Viator/TripAdvisor instead. I submitted my refund request and only received 80% back, with the company saying they were being generous saying it was "my decision" to go back and "numerous Celebrity guests" had enjoyed the trip. This was surprising to me, as I knew for a fact that every Celebrity guest went back with us and none went on the ferry. In addition, it wasn't our decision to go back, none of us could risk missing our ship and the ferry captain confirmed that would happen. It was clear to me that the tour company was lying to us and Viator so that they could get their gas money back, even though it was their decision to send us to the pier with the ferry two hours away. All in all, this is a tour company that is willing to gaslight you in order to cover for their mistakes. DO NOT USE THEM. And Viator/TripAdvisor, having this tour company on your site makes me less like to use you, as if this is the type of vetting you do then I'm concerned about getting similar service in the future. Viator was completely unhelpful when I tried to get a full refund, deferring to what the tour company said even though it was false. Read more Written January 8, 2024
  • Mark S 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Avoid This Operator! Avoid this tour operator! We did not make it to the island to see penguins due to weather caused delays, and the operator refused to give us a complete refund despite their written policy. Although earlier groups made the trip, weather delayed us by almost 1.5 hrs, and the on-site tour rep told us he couldn’t guarantee return in time to catch our ship. The operator wouldn’t even talk to us after the tour & said we had to contact Viator. Read more Written January 3, 2024
  • Alexander L 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Canceled night before We booked the 10am tour because we were arriving to Punta Arenas by flight at 8am and were unable to make the other tours that all seemed to leave at 6:30am. We received a message the night prior that the tour had been "canceled by the port administration due to weather". This was extremely frustrating as we were only going to Punta Arenas going our way to Torres del Paine and not flying to Natales b/c we wanted to go see the penguins. We decided to walk the town and other tour operators to see if they went out that morning. To our surprise, all of the 6:30am tours went to see the penguins and the Port Administration had not canceled their trips. Based on other reviews, it looks like this happens quite often, that this company cancels the tour while others go out. Read more Written March 7, 2023
  • J3793PUalexv 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Very few penguins Be advised, you will be walking along roped off path so the photo is misleading. Very few penguins and if it’s windy they will be hiding in the holes and not active. On our trip we had a very strong wind so our experience with penguins was very limited. You need to wear layers because of the wind. Please be also advised that trip to Marta island may not happen, again due to the wind. Instead of offering extra time with penguins, our guide quickly ushered us back to the boat and we went back to the dock. Boat ride back was very choppy. No mention of at least a partial refund for the trip cut short. Next time we will be more selective in picking our excursion operator. Read more Written February 27, 2023
  • CarolineP98 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing We booked on line and turned up at the offices to be told the trip was cancelled as it was too rough to land on the island. Not sure I believed them as it was a sunny day and the sea looked calm but was unable to discuss due to my limited Spanish I was very disappointed as we were only in the area for 1 day so didn’t get to visit the penguins On the positive side our money was refunded promptly by Tripadvisor Read more Written February 1, 2023
  • TravelPrincess69 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles They are honest They contacted us to re-verify exactly when we’d need to be back to the ship. When we told them 4:00, sadly, they had to cancel us because due to wind they would not be able to guarantee they’d be able to get us back in time. Read more Written January 30, 2023
  • ljgordon 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Awful This was a disaster. We used Top Private Tours for another tour in Puerto Chacabuco and it was very good, so we believe it is the local tour company they use that is very bad. We received a confirmation letter for our trip to Magdalena Island. The letter said to meet at noon. There was an address on the letter but no further instructions. There were about 8 of us that arrived on the tender around 11am and used Google Maps to find the office. We were told the tour was cancelled! No pre-notification, nothing. There wasn't even someone to meet the ship to advise us of the cancellation. We requested alternatives and were just told we might get something from a company down 2 blocks and up the street. No apologies, no concern whatsoever! We were told it was due to wind/weather. We had missed The Falkland Islands and the walk around with penguins, we were looking forward to this one. The ship tours continued to go. They even had a tour (sold out) that left at 4pm. I don't believe the company was honest with us ever. Read more Written January 23, 2023

It is a great opportunity to walk along the path and watch the penguins walk, dance and interact with each other, this is a must do, I was not disappointed by any means and its hard to say goodbye. • kounistou 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Nice half day tour with these magnificent creatures Great opportunity to meet these beautiful creatures at their natural habitat. You will not feel the time passing while observing these magnificent creatures going about their daily business at Isla Magdalena. Our tour guides were always available to answer our questions and were very safety oriented. I also liked how they made sure that we respect the animals and leave them enough space whenever they wanted to cross the touristic path. "Don't stress the penguins!" That's my favorite quote! :) Read more Written January 12, 2022

  • Grumpy G 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great visit and certainly an experience We took this tour with tour cruise line and had a great trip our to the island on our catamaran. The day was windy but we saw loads of penguins on our walk around the island, some young ones, some changing their feathers and many adults. Our only issue was the return trip as the weather had changed for the worse and the sea had large waves. The boat had to turn back at one point for an hour to see if the wind abated. Unfortunately it didn't so we had a very rough ride back with a number of passengers being ill. However, the crew were brilliant and reacted very quickly to those who succumbed and must be praised.
