What documents are needed to travel abroad.

You’re excitedly counting down the days until your sunny Florida vacation. But before you go, it’s important to be in the know about all the  documents needed to travel to America .

Here’s a listing of information about the documentation required by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Visa Waiver Program, ESTA, and all the other basics to make your entry into the country effortless.

Basic Traveler Documents

Think of the first thing you triple-check before you leave for the airport. If you thought passport, you’re thinking like a world traveler.

Your passport is the primary  ID required for air travel  to a foreign country, so keep it close and safe. Make sure to check your passport well in advance to ensure it’s not expired. Although there are many passport expediting services, renewing your passport rush-free will save you the stress and big price tag.

An alternate form of I.D. like a driver’s license and/or birth certificate is also important to bring along, as well as any visa documentation. Depending on your country of origin, you may not need a visa to visit the U.S. thanks to the  Visa Waiver Program .

Visa Waiver Program

The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens of  38 countries  to visit the United States without a visa, facilitating entry to the country. Business or tourism visitors can stay for up to 90 days; visas are required for longer stays.

The Visa Waiver Program works only for electronic passports, or e-Passports, which contain an electronic chip. Most passports are electronic, but if you’re not sure, check for a  chip icon  at the bottom of the front cover of your passport. Travelers  without an e-Passport  are subject to a non-immigrant visa requirement.

Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)  

If your country falls under the Visa Waiver Program you don’t need to worry about visas. But in order to be admitted into the country, you’re going to need to apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or  ESTA . This automated system determines if you’re eligible to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program using biographic info, and answers to VWP eligibility questions. The application process has a $4 processing fee, and a $10 authorization charge. Although in most cases a response is received within seconds of submission, make sure you  apply  as soon as you start planning your trip. Questions on ESTA or the VWP? Visas   

If your country doesn’t fall under the Visa Waiver Program, if you’re an exchange student, or if you have other circumstances that require you to stay longer than 90 days in Florida, you’re going to need a  nonimmigrant visa , or a visa for someone who doesn’t plan to permanently immigrate to the U.S.

These visas are categorized, with the  Tourism and Visitor  visa being one of the most common. It’s a lengthier, more hands-on process, but as long as you tick all the requirement boxes, you’ll be good to go. Once you submit all documents and pay a fee, which ranges from $160-$205 depending on your visa, you’ll be cited for an interview. Visit the U.S. Department of State’s  website  for a detailed list of requirements, as well as the step-by-step process.

Other Considerations   

It’s strongly recommended that you bring a note of consent (notarized, if possible) if you’re travelling with your child, and the other parent or legal guardian isn’t accompanying you.

As far as additional  documents needed to travel abroad , international travelers no longer need to complete Customs and Border Protection Form I-94 or Form I-94W. If you need to verify immigration status, employment authorization, or any other admission information, you can use your I-94 number (access it  here ). Your I-94 number is a required form of ID at customs, so make sure to save it in multiple places (phone, notepad, etc.).

Passports must be valid at least 3 months beyond the date of your return to the United States. Passports must contain at least two blank pages for the visa sticker. Passports must have been issued within the previous 10 years.

Foreigners who visit Italy for business, tourism, or study for up to 90 days must fill out a“dichiarazione di presenza” (declaration of presence). This document will be given to foreigners when they arrive in Italy.

All visitors who stay for more than 90 days must apply for a “permesso di soggiorno” (residency permit) from the local Questura (police department) within 8 working days of their arrival in Italy.

Passports and visas will be returned exclusively by mail. The applicant must bring a self addressed, prepaid or stamped envelope. The Visa Office will accept only USPS Express Mail prepaid envelopes from the U.S. Postal Service (no FedEx, no UPS). The Visa Office is not responsible for lost or stolen passports in transit.

Taiwanese citizens receive the same privileges  ONLY  if their passports include their Identity Card reference number.

Citizens of the following nations do  NOT  need visas when visiting the Schengen Area for a stay of up to 90 days every six months ONLY if they are travelling with a biometric passport:

Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine.

Citizens of other countries must have a visa to enter the Schengen Area, even if they are legal residents of the United States of America.

To determine whether Italy is the correct nation to receive your application, count up the days you will be spending in Italy and in other Schengen Area countries. If:

Italy is your only Schengen Area destination,  OR  You are visiting different countries in the Schengen Area, but Italy is the country in the Schengen Area where you will be spending most of the time (number of days),  OR  You are visiting different countries in the Schengen area, but you are spending an equal number of days in each country, and Italy is your first port of entry in the Schengen area, then you may apply for a Schengen visa through this Consulate.

Important Notices:

You need to book the correct type of  visa appointment :

• for stays up to 90 days it is a   Schengen visa appointment
• for stays of more than 91 days it is a   National visa appointment

Appointments scheduled for the wrong category will not be honored, you will be required to reschedule your appointment accordingly.

Must apply to a student visa those foreigners who wish to:

• Carry out or extend studies in an authorized educational center in Spain, in a full-time program, leading to the obtaining of a degree or certificate of studies.
• Participate in a student mobility program, follow a secondary education program and / or baccalaureate in an officially recognized teaching or scientific center.
• Carry out research or training activities.
• Carry out non-labor practices in a public or private organization.
• Provide volunteer service within a program that pursues objectives of general interest.

US citizens (or any other nationality that does not require a visa to enter Spain) who travel to study less than 90 days do not need to apply for this visa .

The Consulate General of Spain in Miami has jurisdiction over the following states: Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Visa applications must be submitted well in advance of the start of the relevant study programmes, as the procedure involves consultations with other authorities. Incomplete applications are not allowed.

Family members who can obtain a visa to accompany the student:

• Spouse or legally recognized domestic partner.
• Children under 18 years of age or children with disabilities. Family members will not be able to work during their stay in Spain.

You must submit the following documents (Documents 1 to 7 are essential to start the process):

• National Visa Application Form . completed and signed. You can download it from Download forms section. Do not forget to indicate the email in section #17.
• Recent color photograph (U.S. passport size 2"x2") with light and uniform background, preferably white. Photographs with a dark background or with objects or people that can be seen behind the head will not be accepted. Do not paste the photo to the form, just send them loose. Do not crop the photograph to fit the form.
• Consular fee . See section Visa fees
• Passport or travel document recognized as valid with a duration of at least the requested time of stay and must contain at least two free pages in the visa section and a copy of the page where your data and photos appear. In case you cannot present the original at the time of application, you can send a notarized copy and send the passport as soon as possible.
• Certificate of admission to a research or training center in an authorized educational center in Spain, for the realization of a full-time program, leading to the obtaining of a degree or certificate of studies.
• Certificate of admission to a study center, foster care by a family or institution and commitment of the organizer of the program to assume the expenses.
• Admission for unpaid internships based on the signing of an agreement and copy of the agreement signed between the study center and the public or private company or vocational training center where the internship will be carried out.
• Agreement with the organization in charge of a volunteer program that includes a description of the activities and conditions to carry them out, as well as the resources available to cover your trip, food and accommodation during your stay.
• Driver's license and / or Student Card that proves your legal residence in our jurisdiction. If you do not have one, you must prove your residence by providing several of the following documents such as rental contract, electricity bills, telephone, tax return, vehicle insurance, etc ... (Notarized copy in the case of driver's license or student card)
• U.S. immigration status (not applicable for U.S. citizens): green card, valid U.S. student visa, work permit (stamp in passport), "parole" (Notarized copy)
• Disclaimer form must be submitted with the application. (See Download forms section)
• Declaration from the Spanish university or school, or from the U.S. program, assuming full financial responsibility for room and board expenses (often included in the acceptance letter). Stamped and signed and translated into Spanish
• Proof of financial aid or scholarship of at least $700 per month of stay for room and board translated into Spanish.
• Notarized letter from parents or guardians, assuming full financial responsibility for lodging and living expenses of at least $700 per month of stay. Suggested text: "I hereby certify that I (father, mother, other, etc.) of (...) I will cover your stay in Spain with 700 dollars per month and that I am responsible for the expenses caused by any emergency." Along with the last 3 bank statements of the parents and the birth certificate of the visa applicant.
• Last three personal bank statements with at least $700 per month of stay.
• Proof of public or private health insurance arranged with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain. The insurance should cover all risks normally covered for nationals and should be maintained throughout the life of the authorisation. At a minimum, it must include all prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation care activities carried out in health or socio-health centres, as well as urgent medical transport. It must be health insurance (not travel). Therefore, it does not need to cover repatriations and/or evacuations. Health insurance must not have a lack, co-payment, or coverage limit, that is, it must cover 100% of medical, hospital and out-of-hospital expenses.

If the duration of the stay exceeds six months, a Medical Certificate and Criminal Record Certificate will also be required.

• Medical certificate with letterhead, signature and seal and license number of the doctor, together with a sworn translation thereof into Spanish indicating: "This medical certificate certifies that Mr. / Mrs. (...) He does not suffer from any of the diseases that may have serious public health implications in accordance with the provisions of the International Health Regulations of 2005." If you use the bilingual model provided by the consulate (see section "Download forms"), translation is not necessary. This certificate is valid for 3 months.
• Criminal record certificate issued within 6 months prior to the date of application, stating that the applicant has no criminal record in the countries where he has resided for the last five years. You must apply for a background certification verified by fingerprint comparison. Criminal record certification must be issued by the U.S. Department of Justice - Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). ( Original and copy )

State or local police criminal certificates are not accepted. The criminal record must be legalized with the Apostille certification of the Issued by the U.S. Department of State and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator. (The translation does not need Apostille and the Apostille does not need translation)

If the applicant has stayed six months or more during the last five years in another country, he must present the criminal record of that country, legalized with the Apostille Certification and translated into Spanish. If the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, the document must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Spanish Consulate in that country. The legalization must always be done on the original of the document by the country / state issuing it.

Documents required for family members.

For each family member accompanying the student, the following must be presented:

• The documents listed above.
• >Accredit economic means to cover the expenses of stay and return to your country. For the maintenance of family members during their stay in Spain: the last three personal bank account statements showing at least a minimum amount of $ 480 for the first family member per month of stay and $ 320 per month for each of the remaining relatives who will be integrated into the family unit in Spain.
• Original birth certificate of the children legalized with the Hague Apostille and translated into Spanish. Attach a copy of both parents' IDs. If the parents are divorced, present the final decree of divorce and custody of the child legalized with the Apostille certification. If the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, the document must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Spanish Consulate in that country. (Original and copy)
• Original Marriage Certificate legalized with the Hague Apostille and translated into Spanish. If the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, the document must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Spanish Consulate in that country. (Original and copy)
• Original Domestic Partnership Certificate legalized with the Hague Apostille and translated into Spanish. If the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, the document must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Spanish Consulate in that country. (Original and copy)
• Proof of public or private medical insurance (travel insurance will not be accepted) from an insurer recognized and authorized to operate in Spain. The insurance must cover all risks normally covered for nationals and must be maintained throughout the life of the authorization. No deductibles or copays. It must cover, at least, all preventive, diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation care activities carried out in health or socio-health centres, as well as urgent medical transport.

Correction of the application: The Consular Office may request the applicant to present the missing documents, or to provide additional documents or data that are necessary for the resolution of the application. The applicant may also be called for a personal interview.

STUDENT VISA FOR CHILDREN UNDER 18

In the case of minors and not traveling accompanied by their parents, the application must be submitted by their parents or duly accredited legal guardians.

In addition to the documents detailed above (requirements 1 to 9), you will need to submit the following:

• Original birth certificate of the minor, legalized with the Hague Apostille and translated into Spanish. In those countries that are not party to the Hague Convention they must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Spanish Consulate in that country.
• Legalized copies of the identity documents or passports of the parents or guardians.
• Notarial authorization of both parents or guardians for the trip to Spain and identifying the person who will take care of the minor in Spain, for the purpose of carrying out the activity in question, with proof of the center, organization, entity and body responsible for the activity and the period of stay planned. This authorization must expressly include the data of the persons who will take care of the minor once he is in Spain, with expression of their names, surnames, DNI or NIE numbers and address. If the document is in another language, it must be translated into Spanish.

Notarized declaration of the person or persons taking care of the minor in Spain, with a copy of the DNI or NIE and certificate of Sexual Nature issued by the Registry of Sex Offenders of the Ministry of Justice ( https://sede.mjusticia.gob.es/es/tramites/certificado-registro-central )

or express authorization for the Administration to obtain such certification . ( https://www.mjusticia.gob.es/es/Ciudadano/TramitesGestiones/Documents/1292428513701-Modelo_de_autorizacion.PDF )

Please provide one recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) of yourself, which should not have been used previously in the passport. The photograph should be in colour and:

• Taken against a white background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background.
• Clear share quality and with the face in focus.
• Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print).
• Full face, non-smiling [without sunglasses, a hat/cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religious belief or ethnic background]
• Please stick the Photograph on the Visa Application Form.

Note: Please follow these instructions carefully. If photographs presented do not meet these requirements your application will be considered incomplete. A photo booth meeting these requirements is available at the centre..

The Consulate General of Spain, through BLS – Spain Visa Application Center, Miami, will notify the resolution of the application. The passport must be collected by the applicant personally at the offices of BLS – Spain Visa Application Center, Miami, from Monday to Friday between 3:00 and 4:00 PM, within a maximum period of two months. If the collection is not carried out within the period, it will be understood that the interested party has renounced the visa granted, and the procedure will be archived.

Once the visa has been collected, the applicant must enter Spanish territory during the period of validity. Within one month of entry (for stays longer than 180 days), the foreigner must personally apply for the Foreigner's Identity Card, at the Police Station, Aliens and Documentation Section closest to his home. In the case of minors, this procedure may be carried out by a representative.

If the duration of the studies does not exceed six months, the visa will be sufficient to document the stay.

The processing time for this type of visa can take approximately 2 to 4 weeks. It is recommended that air tickets are not purchased until the visa is granted.

The Consulate General of Spain in Miami has full authority to evaluate and request additional documents from those initially submitted by the applicant.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel. 

The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering the US.

Passport validity requirements

To enter the US, your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay.

If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from the US, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport. 

Dual nationals  

US law requires US citizens to enter and exit the US using a US passport. Contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK for more information.

Visa requirements

To enter or transit through the US, you must have either an  Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ) visa waiver  or a visa .

Applying for an ESTA visa waiver 

Apply for an ESTA visa waiver through US Customs and Border Protection. You can also apply using the ESTA Mobile app .

You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you have:

• been arrested (even if the arrest did not result in a criminal conviction)
• a criminal record
• been refused admission into, or have been deported from the US
• previously overstayed under an ESTA visa waiver

You cannot normally apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you were in the following countries on or after March 2011: 

• North Korea

You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you travelled to or were in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021. 

If you are not eligible for an ESTA , you must instead apply for a US visa.

US visa appointments

Visa appointments at the US Embassy in London are limited. Plan your application as far ahead as possible before travel. If you need to travel urgently, you can request an expedited interview through the US Embassy’s appointment service provider.

Children and young people

Anyone aged 17 and under must:

• have a valid visa or ESTA visa waiver on arrival
• be able to provide evidence about the purpose, location and length of their visit if asked by immigration officials
• have written consent from one or both parents if travelling alone, with only one parent, or with someone who is not a parent or legal guardian

The US authorities can stop you entering the country if they have safeguarding concerns about a child. If this happens, the US authorities will take the child into their care, and their return from the US could take months. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) cannot speed up the return of British nationals aged 17 and under from the US.

The US Customs and Border Protection programme Global Entry allows pre-approved travellers through border control faster at some US airports. If you’re a British citizen, you can  register to get a UK background check . If you pass the background checks, you’ll be invited to apply for Global Entry.

Italy launched a new digital nomad visa—find out if you qualify and where to apply

If you're a digital nomad or a remote worker looking for your next home away from home, consider Italy. The country's new digital nomad visa went into effect his month, according to Euronews .

Italy's government defines digital nomads as a citizen of non-EU states who carry out "a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely," Euronews states.

The worker should either be self-employed, in collaboration with, or as an employee of a company.

To take advantage of Italy's new digital nomad visa, remote workers must have an annual income of at least three times the minimum level required for exemption from participating in healthcare costs. That amounts to just under €28,000 annually or $30,051 USD.

Italy also requires applicants to have health insurance for the duration of their stay, suitable accommodations, and proof that they have been digital nomads or remote workers in another place for at least six months.

The visa is good for one year and can be renewed. Family members can be added to the application, but final approval is at the government's discretion.

Applicants must visit a valid Italian consulate in their country of residence and submit a declaration signed by their employer as part of the process.

Euronews also reports that applicants convicted of a crime within the last five years will automatically be rejected.

Once the visa is approved, digital nomads or remote workers will have eight days from their arrival in Italy to apply for a resident permit.

This digital nomad visa is just one of the many ways Italy is attracting people to its coasts. Since the late 2010s, towns in the country have been going viral for selling homes for 1 euro , or roughly $1.07, as a way to get foreign investments and bring population numbers back up.

U.S. Passports The U.S. Department of State issues passports to United States citizens. You can apply for a passport at a passport agency, many Federal and state courts, some post offices, and at the Coral Gables City Hall. Certain criteria will determine whether you can apply for a passport by mail or need to do so in person.

Renewal of a U.S. Passport You can renew your passport by mail if you:

• Already have a passport that is not damaged; and   • Received it within the past 15 years; and   • Were at least age 16 when it was issued; and   • Still have the same name as in passport (or you can legally document your name change).

If your passport has been altered or damaged, you cannot apply by mail. You must apply in person.   To apply for a passport by mail you will need to:

• Complete the DS-82 application form. This form can be downloaded at the   U.S. State Department Travel website . • Attach to your application form:   o your most recent passport   o two identical passport photographs   o   Submit the applicable renewal fee   payable to the U.S. Department of State • Mail in a padded envelope to:

New Application for a U.S. Passport You will need to apply in person if …

• this is your first time applying for a U.S. passport • your expired U.S. passport is not in your possession   • your previous U.S. passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago • your previous U.S. passport has expired and it was issued when you were under 16   • your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen or damaged

To apply for a passport in person you will need to:

• Complete the DSP-11 application form. This form can be downloaded at the   U.S. State Department Travel website . • Present proof of U.S. citizenship • Present proof of identity • Provide two passport photos • Provide a Social Security # •   Submit the applicable application fee   payable to the U.S. Department of State (Please note that additional charges will apply if you wish to expedite your application.)   • Bring your application to an acceptance facility for processing.    Acceptance facilities may include many Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices. Visa Information You are required to have a visa for study abroad. A visa is issued by the country where you intend to travel. (If you are a citizen of the country in which you will be studying as an exchange student, you should check with the embassy or consulate of the country of your citizenship to determine if a student visa will be required for you). The appropriate consulate of that country in the U.S issues the visa. Visa regulations often change, and procedures can vary by Consulate and/or Embassy. You should verify the current visa application procedures with the appropriate Consulate or Embassy before initiating the process. While every effort is made to ensure that information given to study abroad students is updated and as accurate as possible, the University of Miami cannot guarantee that the visa information posted on our website or in printed materal is the most current.

Many visa application processes include an application, an official letter from the host university, a medical report, photos, and/or other country-specific requirements. There may be fees associated with the visa application. For detailed information, you should contact the appropriate consulate of the country where you will be studying abroad.

The process for obtaining a visa may take time, so you will need to plan ahead to get the necessary paperwork. If you feel you are not prepared to handle the visa process on your own you should consult a visa agency.

U.S. Travelers Won’t Need a Visa to Visit Brazil Just Yet — What to Know

The new visa requirements were most recently set to go into effect on April 10 of this year.

Brazil has postponed its travel visa requirements for American visitors until 2025 just as it was set to go into effect. 

The new visa requirements for tourists from the United States, which has been postponed several times and was most recently set to go into effect on April 10 of this year, will now go into effect on April 10, 2025, according to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Brazil . A visa will also be required for tourists from Australia and Canada, Visit Rio shared with Travel + Leisure.  

"We applaud the government's decision… to delay the visa," Joao H. Rodrigues, the U.S. representative for Visit Rio, said in a statement shared with T+L. "In the first two months of 2024, the arrival of Americans in Brazil was 11% higher than in the same period of the previous year. Without the visa requirement, we expect to maintain the growth in the arrival of foreign tourists from these international markets visiting Brazil and [especially] Rio de Janeiro."

When it does take effect, American travelers will need to obtain an electronic visa to enter the country. The e-visa will cost $80.90 per person and will be valid for 10 years, according to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Brazil.

The decision to bring back these visa requirements comes about five years after the country eliminated visa rules for U.S. travelers exploring for up to 90 days.

While Brazil is bringing back visa rules for American travelers next year, several countries are dropping them or making it easier for U.S. tourists to visit. Turkey, for example, dropped visa requirements earlier this year for travelers visiting from both America and Canada. And China made it easier for Americans to visit by eliminating the requirement for U.S. travelers to submit proof of a round-trip air ticket, proof of a hotel reservation, proof of their itinerary, or an invitation letter to apply for a tourist visa.

There are also several other countries where American travelers are not required to obtain a visa before going, including many European, Caribbean, Central American, and South American countries.

Dolphins Bring In Pass Rusher for Free Agent Visit

The Miami Dolphins are still looking for help in light of the 2023 injuries to Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips

The Miami Dolphins have been busy in free agency, but they're probably not done yet.

The team brought in veteran pass rusher Carl Lawson for a visit Wednesday, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Lawson is a six-year veteran who played six games for the New York Jets in 2023 after starting all 17 games the previous season.

He has 27 sacks in his NFL career, including 8.5 as a rookie fourth-round pick with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017 and 7 for the Jets in 2022.

Lawson clearly fell out of favor last season when he never played more than 23 defensive snaps in any game. After injuring his back in the offseason, Lawson lost his starting job to 2022 first-round pick Jermaine Johnson, who emerged as a Pro Bowl player.

Lawson has overcome major injuries twice, a torn ACL he sustained during the 2018 season and a torn Achilles tendon sustained in training camp in 2021.

DOLPHINS STILL NEED EDGE DEFENDER HELP

The Dolphins already have signed veteran Shaquil Barrett this offseason, but still are thin at the edge defender spot because of the free agency departure of Andrew Van Ginkel and the uncertain status of Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Cameron Goode.

We should remember that the Dolphins played the playoff game at Kansas City with three veterans signed that week — Bruce Irvin, Justin Houston and Malik Reed — along with late-season acquisition Melvin Ingram.

Irvin, Houston and Ingram are unresricted free agents, while Reed is a "street" free agent because he was not on the Dolphins' 53-man roster at the end of the season, having been elevated from the practice squad for the playoff game.

If it's not Lawson, the Dolphins still figure to add a player or more at the position, whether in free agency or through the draft.

When to File Your Adjustment of Status Application for Family-Sponsored or Employment-Based Preference Visas: May 2024

Are you seeking to adjust your status and become a U.S. permanent resident under a family-sponsored or employment-based preference immigrant visa? If you have not yet had a relative or employer file an immigrant visa petition on your behalf, please learn more about the Adjustment of Status Filing Process . If you already have a petition filed or approved on your behalf, you may have to wait for an available visa in your category (if applicable) before you can file your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status . This page will help you determine when to file your adjustment of status application.

When to File

Use the Visa Bulletin charts below to determine when to file your adjustment of status application.

To use the charts:

• Find your visa type in the first column (on the left) of the appropriate chart (Family-sponsored or Employment-based).
• Stay in that row and move directly to the right to find the corresponding date under the country of your birth (as listed in the boldface columns across the top).
• If the date on the chart is current (“C”), or your priority date is earlier than the date on the chart, you may file your adjustment of status application, if otherwise eligible to do so.
•  “U” means unauthorized; for example, numbers are not authorized for issuance.

Your priority date is generally the date when your relative or employer properly filed the immigrant visa petition on your behalf with USCIS. If a labor certification is required to be filed with your immigrant visa petition, the priority date is the date the labor certification application was accepted for processing by the Department of Labor.

About the Visa Bulletin

DOS publishes current immigrant visa availability information in a monthly Visa Bulletin . The Visa Bulletin indicates when statutorily limited visas are available for issuance to prospective immigrants based on their individual priority date.

On Nov. 20, 2014, the Secretary of Homeland Security directed USCIS to work with DOS to:

• Ensure that all immigrant visas authorized by Congress are issued to eligible individuals when there is sufficient demand for such visas, and
• Improve the Visa Bulletin system for determining when immigrant visas are available to applicants during the fiscal year.

Additionally, in July 2015, the Administration issued its report on Modernizing and Streamlining Our Legal Immigration System for the 21st Century (PDF) . This report included detailed recommendations to revise and update the monthly Visa Bulletin to better estimate immigrant visa availability and provide needed predictability to nonimmigrant workers seeking permanent residency.

USCIS, in coordination with DOS, revised the procedures for determining visa availability for applicants waiting to file for adjustment of status. The revised process will better align with procedures DOS uses for noncitizens who seek to become U.S. permanent residents by applying for immigrant visas at U.S. consulates and embassies abroad.

This revised process will enhance DOS’s ability to more accurately predict overall immigrant visa demand in determining the cut-off dates for the Visa Bulletin. This will help ensure that the maximum number of immigrant visas are issued annually as intended by Congress, and minimize month-to-month fluctuations in Visa Bulletin final action dates. Additional goals are outlined in the White House report, Modernizing and Streamlining Our Legal Immigration System for the 21st Century (PDF) .

New Visa Bulletin Charts

The Visa Bulletin will now have two different charts because of the revised procedures. DOS will post two charts per visa preference category in the DOS Visa Bulletin. The charts are:

• Application Final Action Dates (dates when visas may finally be issued); and
• Dates for Filing Applications (earliest dates when applicants may be able to apply).

When USCIS determines there are immigrant visas available for the filing of additional adjustment of status applications, the Dates for Filing Applications chart may be used to determine when to file an adjustment of status application with USCIS. Otherwise, the Application Final Action Dates chart must be used to determine when to file an adjustment of status application with USCIS.

In coordination with the DOS, USCIS will monitor visa numbers each month and post the relevant chart on this page under When to File.

Determining Visa Availability

USCIS considers several factors to determine if there is a greater supply of visas than the demand for those visas. To determine visa availability, USCIS will compare the number of visas available for the remainder of the fiscal year with:

• Documentarily qualified visa applications reported by DOS;
• Pending adjustment of status applications reported by USCIS; and
• Historical drop off rate of applicants for adjustment of status (for example, denials, withdrawals and abandonments)
