Chidambaram Pichavaram Boating Sight Seeing Places

At a distance of 16 km from Chidambaram & 217 km from Chennai, Pichavaram is an exquisite coastal village near Chidambaram in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the picturesque places to visit near Chennai and among the must include places in Chidambaram packages . Located between the Vellar estuary and Coleroon estuary, Pichavaram is well-known for its mangrove forests spread over 1100 hectares area. The mangroves of Pichavaram are considered the second largest mangrove forests in the world. Apparently, the forest has more than 50 islands of various sizes and 4,400 big and small canals. The trees grow in water that's 3 to 10 feet deep in different places. The conditions are quite hostile, as the sea's tides bring saltwater in and out twice a day, changing the salinity. Hence, the trees have unique root systems, with membranes that only allow fresh water to enter. It is one of the popular Chidambaram tourist places . Pichavaram can be enjoyed through a boat ride around the 1100 hectare area of the forest, which takes you through narrow canals, breathtaking sceneries and allows you to witness the amazing life forms of the mangrove trees while adoring the birdlife of the forest. Approximately 200 species of birds have been recorded, along with many varieties of seaweed, fish, prawns, crabs, oysters, turtles, and otters. There are around 20 different varieties of trees in the mangrove forest as well. The sea is just 6 km from the forest and one can see the sandbank which separates the forest from the Bay of Bengal during the boat ride. Unfortunately, the mangrove forest was damaged by the devastating 2004 cyclone that hit Tamil Nadu. However, if it wasn't for the forest acting as a buffer for the water, the destruction inland would've been severe. The water from the tsunami has affected its growth, requiring protective measures to be put into place. Students and scientists from across India come to study the mangrove forest and its incredible biodiversity. Boat Timings: 8 AM - 5 PM Entry: Rs. 300 for Row Boat, & Rs. 1700 for Motor Boat

Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

The mangrove timberland at Pichavaram, which is undoubtedly one of the most popular among sightseeing places in South India covers 1,100 hectares and joins the Bay of Bengal, where it's isolated by a long sand bank. Evidently, the woods has 50 islands of different sizes, and 4,400 of all shapes and sizes waterways. Around 200 types of birds have been found, alongside angle, prawns, crabs, clams, turtles, and otters. There are around 20 distinct types of trees in the mangrove forest. The trees develop in water that is 3-10 feet somewhere down in better places.

Thillai Nataraja Temple

The temple complex is spread more than 50 sections of land in the core of the city. This temple portrays Lord Shiva as the Lord of the move Bharatanatyam and is one of only a handful couple of temples where Shiva is spoken to by a human murthi. The Cosmic Dance of Lord Nataraja symbolizes the movement of the universe as managed by Lord Shiva.

Thillai Kali Amman Temple

Pichvaram Backwaters

To discover nature in its most beautiful shape, visiting the Pichavaram Backwaters is a must. While going through forests in a boat, you can get look at an assortment of extraordinary and indigenous birds. Tiruvetkalam is the second temple in the series of the Tevara Stalangal on the northern banks of the waterway Kaveri in the Chola area of Tamilnadu. Additionally, close to this temple is the Shivastalam Tirukkazhippalai. Inscriptions from the Nayaka period (sixteenth century) are found in this temple. This east-bound temple has a Nagalinga tree and a temple tank in front.

Chidambaram, 58km south of Puducherry, is so steeped in myth that its history is hard to unravel. As the site of the tandav, the cosmic dance of Shiva as Nataraja, King of the Dance, it’s one of the holiest sites in south India, and a visit to its Sabhanayaka Nataraja Temple affords a fascinating glimpse into ancient Tamil religious practice and belief. The legendary king Hiranyavarman is said to have made a pilgrimage here from Kashmir , seeking to rid himself of leprosy by bathing in the temple’s Shivaganga tank. In thanks for a successful cure, he enlarged the temple. He also brought three thousand brahmins, of the Dikshitar caste, whose descendants, distinguishable by top-knots of hair at the front of their heads, are the ritual specialists of the temple to this day.

Few of the fifty mathas (monasteries) that once stood here remain, but the temple itself is still a hive of activity and hosts numerous festivals. The two most important are ten-day affairs, building up to spectacular finales: on the ninth day of each, temple chariots process through the four Car streets in a car festival, while on the tenth there is an abhishekham, when the principal deities in the Raja Sabha (thousand-pillared hall) are anointed. For exact dates (one is in May/June, the other in Dec/Jan), contact any TTDC tourist office and plan well ahead, as they are very popular. Other local festivals include fire-walking and kavadi folk dance (dancing with decorated wooden frames on the head) at the Thillaiamman Kali (April/May) and Keelatheru Mariamman (July/ Aug) temples respectively.

Chidambaram revolves around the Sabhanayaka Nataraja Temple and the busy market area that surrounds it, along North, East, South and West Car streets. The town also has a large student population, based at Annamalai University to the east, a centre of Tamil studies.

Sabhanayaka Nataraja Temple

For south India’s Shaivites, the Sabhanayaka Nataraja Temple, where Shiva is enthroned as Lord of the Cosmic Dance (Nataraja), is the holiest of holies. Its huge gopuras, whose lights are used as landmarks by sailors far out to sea in the Bay of Bengal, soar above a 55-acre complex, divided by four concentric walls. The oldest parts now standing were built under the Cholas, who adopted Nataraja as their chosen deity and crowned several kings here. If you have the time the best way to tackle the complex is to work slowly inwards from the third enclosure in clockwise circles.

Frequent ceremonies take place at the innermost sanctum, the most popular being at noon and 6pm, when a fire is lit, great gongs are struck and devotees rush forward to catch a last glimpse of the lingam before the doors are shut. On Friday nights before the temple closes, during a particularly elaborate puja, Nataraja is carried on a palanquin accompanied by music and attendants carrying flaming torches and tridents. At other times, you’ll hear ancient devotional hymns from the Tevaram.

How to Reach

Chidambaram is a bustling tourist town and has direct and easy access by rail and road. The best way to reach the town would be by train.

The nearest is the Puducherry Airport which has flights to some cities in South India . The next major airport is the Tiruchirapalli airport that has a considerably wider choice of domestic and international flights. You could travel by cab or by bus from the airport to Chidambaram.

There are daily and weekly trains from major cities across the country and the towns down south. Most of the trains halt at all major tourist and pilgrim stations including Chidambaram, so the towns are far easily reachable by way of rail.

Private and state transport buses are available from most of the major towns and cities across south of India and Mumbai . Chidambaram is also easily accessible by the picturesque East Coast Road that wends its way from Chennai to Kanyakumari .

There are local minibuses, cabs and auto rickshaws for getting around town.

Summer (March – May):

1. nataraja temple.

Nataraja Temple is an old Hindu temple in the centre of Chidambaram town in Tamil Nadu, around two kilometres from the Chidambaram Bus Station. It is a must-see on every trip to Chidambaram , one of the oldest temples in South India.

The Nataraja Temple is devoted to Nataraja, Shiva as the lord of the dance, and is also known as the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple and the Thillai Nataraja Temple. Sky Temple is one of the five Panchbootha Sthalas dedicated to Lord Shiva. Once upon a time, when the settlement was still called Thillai, a shrine dedicated to Shiva stood where the temple currently stands. Chidambaram, both the city and the temple’s name, means “environment of knowledge” or “clothed in thinking”, The temple’s design represents the connection between artistic expression and religious belief.

Chidambaram, formerly the capital of the Chola kingdom, is home to one of South India’s oldest continuously-used temples, built in the 10th century. The Cholas worshipped Lord Shiva, also known as Nataraj. Throughout the 2000s, the Nataraj temple sustained fire damage, underwent renovations, and expanded.

The temple’s original design and construction date to the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with comparable subsequent extensions. The temple’s primary god is Shiva, although it also pays homage to Vaishnavism, Shaktism, and other traditions.

2. Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

Near Chidambaram, at a place called Pichavaram, lays Tamil Nadu’s biggest mangrove forest. One of Tamil Nadu’s most gorgeous spots is right here. Driving time from Chidambaram is minimal. Here, the boat journey is an event you will not soon forget. Looking out from inside the mangroves, the area seems much bigger than it is.

As they make their way through the network of canals, the boats pass under a green canopy formed by the trees that arch towards each other on each side of the waterway. That place is like its tiny planet, isolated from the rest of the world and completely gorgeous. The clear water, lush mangroves, and brilliant blue sky are a visual feast.

3. Poompuhar Beach

One of the oldest beaches in Tamil Nadu is Poompuhar. Three kilometres long, this beach begins at the entrance of the Kaveri River. The spot where the Kaveri River meets the sea is a must-see. The rocky shoreline is less popular with tourists, making it ideal for people searching for peace.

Poompuhar Beach also has a monument in the form of a tall tower and a lighthouse. The odd nature of the attraction means that it often only draws a small audience. Weekends are the best time to visit since, during the week, there are likely to be fewer people around.

4. Sirkazhi

Located in Nagapattinam district, the Bhramapureeswarar temple in Sirkazhi was commissioned in the 10th century by Chola monarchs Vikrama Chola, Kulottunga II, and III. It is 20 kilometres from Chidambaram, 45 kilometres from Karaikal, and 110 kilometres from Thanjavur.

Located in a massive temple complex, the Bhramapureeswarar is home to not one but three Shiva shrines: the Bhramapureeswarar shrine, the Thoniappar shrine, and the Sattainathar/Vatukanathar shrine. The basement is home to the Bhramapureeswarar temple.

The term “Thoniappar” comes from the fact that Periyanakar and Periyanayaki live on a “Thoni” (boat) on the second floor. The Thoniappar shrine is located on a mound west of the main temple. The Sattainathar shrine is located on the second level and accessed by stairs from the Thoniappar shrine’s southern prakaram.

5. Vaitheeswaran Temple

The god Shiva is worshipped in Vaitheeswaran Temple. It’s located 27 kilometres away from Chidambaram. The Tamil word for “God of healing” is Vaitheeswaran. It is thought that any illness may be cured by taking a bath in the temple’s holy tank. Nadi astrology has made this place well known.

The Hindu sages who created Nadi astrology believed they could see into the future and record the details of everyone’s life by writing them on leaves. The Nadi leaves record a person’s whole life cycle, from infancy to old age. Vatteluttu, an early form of the Tamil language, is used for the texts. These texts are often attributed to Agathiyar, a Tamil sage.

Kumbakonam is one of the ancient temple towns in Tamil Nadu, situated between the rivers Cauvery and Arasalar in the Thanjavur district, 35 kilometres from Mayiladuthurai, 43 kilometres from Thanjavur , 54 kilometres from Karaikal, 65 kilometres from Nagapattinam, 72 kilometres from Chidambaram, 105 kilometres from Trichy , 129 kilometres from Pondicherry, 235 kilometres from Madurai , and 282 kilometres from Chennai. Chidambaram is a city in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India with a population of about 62,000 (2011). Of the numerous temples the Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram is one of the most significant ones. In terms of its antiquity, richness in terms of worship & festival traditions, in architectural & sculptural splendour, in its association with music & dance, Chidambaram is a center second to none in representing the rich cultural heritage of India. Several rich legends are associated with Chidambaram. The best known, are those describing the Cosmic Dance of Shiva, the dance duel between Shiva and Kaali and the more recent one describing the re-discovery of the Tevaram hymns.

Chidambaram is on the Madras-Tiruchirapalli main line of the Southern Railway. It is connected with Tiruchirapalli, Madras, Madurai (335 km), Rameswaram (575 km), Bangalore (340 km), and Stirrup (290 km).

There are frequent bus services available to Tarious places in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Pondicherry states from Chidambaram. Non-stop bus services and express bus services are also available to major cities like Chennai.

• Chidambaram temple ( Thillai Nataraja Temple ). The temple complex is spread over an area of 40 acres (160,000 m²) in the heart of the city. The main complex is dedicated to Shiva Nataraja and the complex contains shrines to deities such as Shivakami Amman, Ganesh, Murugan and Vishnu in the form Govindaraja Perumal. The golden tiled roof for the Chit Ambalam (the vimanam) was laid by the Chola King Parantaka I (907-950 CE). Donations of gold and jewels have been made by various kings, rulers and patrons to the temple from 9th to 16th century and by the British. Several hundreds of thousands of people flock the temple to see the anointing ceremony and the ritualistic dance of Shiva when he is taken back to the sanctum sanctorum.

Donna Kelce is expressing her gratitude for her sons and how they help fuel one of her biggest passions — travel! 

While speaking with PEOPLE at QVC's Age of Possibility summit in Las Vegas on April 24, the NFL stars’ mom opened up about how her famous sons — Jason , 36, and Travis , 34 — encourage her love of globetrotting. 

“I love to travel, and my kids are very, very gracious and allow me to do that,” Donna tells PEOPLE. 

On the topic of Mother’s Day, she adds that her sons “usually give me gifts, but going off to really fun spots in the world is what I would rather have more than anything else.”

Also during the summit, Donna shared that her son recently enjoyed a beach getaway with his superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift . She said Travis sent her a photo from the pair’s relaxing day at Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif., a picturesque vacation town, and added that they were joined by another famous couple — Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid .

Donna said that her son realized his pal Cooper would be at the same QVC event as her, so when she saw the Maestro actor in Vegas, Donna greeted him warmly, saying, “Travis told me you were going to be here."

Cooper was at the site with his food truck Danny and Coops Philly Cheesesteak to serve lunch to the Quintessential 50 (Q50) — the event’s honorees. QVC describes the group of 50 as, "authentic and inspiring female celebrities, activists, business leaders and lifestyle experts who exemplify the possibilities of life over 50.”

Some of the honorees include Christina Applegate, Patti LaBelle, Rita Wilson, Naomi Watts, Martha Stewart and Queen Latifah.

Before Travis and Swift’s California excursion, the couple kept the beach vibes going in the Bahamas in between international legs of her epic Eras Tour. The singer recently released her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , on April 19.

“They vacationed in the Bahamas for several days," a source told PEOPLE of the couple’s trip at the time. "It was a much-needed break for both of them. They very much enjoyed it. They are so happy together.”
