Excursion limited slip axle advice

  • Add to quote

Mostly use my 2000 excursion 4x4 for on road towing. I do get very frustrated with the poor traction with the open diffs. There are occasions where I am pulling my boat out of the back yard and the vehicle spins two tires on wet grass and I can't move. Looking at the best low cost options to get limited slip or lockers. Would guess that do to my uses I would want limited slip (or selectable locking) in the front and limited slip in the rear. Would it make since to buy a used limited slip complete housing for the rear versus upgrading my axle? What are the best relatively low cost options for the D50 front? Thanks. Gary

factory limited slip for the rear I have one in the garage

I just got done completely rebuilding my 10.5 in my '99 Superduty. Bearings went bad and took out the R&P. I ordered up a complete kit through Six States who beat Jeffs Bronco Graveyard...Here's the kit http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-31970A_10_25_10_5__rear_end_rebuild_kit.htm Jeffs is great but Six states is local for me and price was $749. You can have my old LS carrier if you pay shipping. There are pinion scoring marks on the carrier but still worked. Personally if I were going to tear into it. I would just buy a complete kit and be done with it. You will run into 10.5" and 10.25" parts, just be sure you get the right bearings ect. I went with the 10.25 which actually gives you a bigger pinion bearing. Good luck.

bigreen

I prefer the True Trac LS for the rear. I do them constantly when regearing superduties. It uses a worm gear design that wont wear out like clutches. For the front I would run an Auburn Ected LS/Elec. Locker, and consider going to manual locking hubs. I used to have an Auburn Ected and loved it.

Thanks for the input. Anyone have experience with the Yukon Power Lok?

how can I tell if rear axle is posi, limited slip, or crappy single track?????

  • Add to quote

Hey guys, How can I tell if a rear axle is posi, limited slip, or crappy single track like mine? I'm sick of having to get out and lock in 4wd in the snow (auto hubs long gone), and have a few axles in my area I can get my hands on, and am willing to swap if they're better! Thanks all.

chuckster57

Probably the quickest way is to look at the axle code on the federal sticker that's on the drivers door. Then look here: What rear end ratio is in my Ford , do I have positraction? - Drivetrain.com

usmarshls

i KNOW THIS IS A LITTLE OLD BUT JUST LOOK AT THE AXLE TAG ITS BOLTED TO THE DIFF COVER. ALL THE INFO AND THE BUILD DATE IS ON THERE.

klhansen

The axle on an Excursion would be the same as an SRW pickup. The tag will have the ratio on it in the form of 3 73, and if it's a limited slip the tag would say 3L73. The only options in a factory axle would be friction clutch disk type limited slip, or open differential. The other thing to do is install a limited slip or locking type differential in your axle.

MotionMan

Jack it up, put it in neutral, and turn one wheel by hand. Pay attention to what the wheel on the other side does.

What should the other side do? Mine rotates in the opposite direction. I hear that over time the LS can "wear out" and not work so well. Is that true? I know it is importaant to use the addative for the fluid. Can that wear out? I have not changed mine in years but it does not leak and has light duty. I put in Royal Purple when I put the alum finned cover on but that was a long time ago. I have not had any weird noises but I should change it for piece of mind I guess.

koolaid6666

Both tires should be going the same direction for the jack up method.. Opposite direction means NON posi.

So, the question is where did it go? The window sticker says it has it, I saved it since it was never stuck to the window. I hear they can wear out? is that possible? I had noticed on a dirt road sometimes only one wheel spun when in the past both did. 250k may have worn it out....

replace the gear oil and add new friction mod and go drive it. if no good then replace the lim-slip

texaspsdx

My stock limited slip was chattering around corners really bad. Friction modifiers, gear oil change did not help. I bit the bullet - regeared to 4.10 ratio and Detroit TruTrack geared limited slip. Never wear this one out. Works great and love to 4.10's, especially when towing. Lost about 1 mpg when not towing, but gained 2 mpg when towing due to the gear change.

I'll try the fluid change, it has been a long time. I guess I am not too worried, its not like I really need it unless it can get worse and explode. I may just leave it if the change does not work.

Step hard on the skinny pedal and see how many black marks are behind ya....lol

But what is really "limited slip", does it mean it locks up always or just some times. I mean an ARB locker or a Detroit Locker is really locked solid when engaged, What really does the LS do? And under load will the wheel with the least grip turn and not the other. There has to be some give and take in order to make it drivable and go around corners.

Greg03PSD

The factory type limited slip (otherwise known as an "unlimited slip" since it's pretty much worthless) uses a clutch pack on each axle shaft that is basically supposed to transfer some torque over to the axle with better traction when you get in a slippery situation. The problem is that when you are on a really slippery surface, the factory style limited slip is just unable to transfer power to the other side, so the low traction tire spins freely just like it would with an oepn differential. Limited slips sometimes need a little resistance on the slippery tire to transfer the torque. Next time you find yourself in a slippery situation, try lightly applying the brakes when you lose traction - this fools the limited slip into thinking that the tire has more traction and it helps the differential transfer power to the other side. A limited slip like the Detroit locker is very effective since it uses a different style of locking mechanism. The problem with them is that they work so well that they naturally chatter when you turn a corner - that's the limited slip action locking and unlocking. There's nothing you can do to make that noise go away since that's the way it's designed to operate. I never has much luck with my factory limited slip, so I yanked it out and put in an air locker. If you don't want to go with a selectable type locker (ARB air locker or Eaton e-locker), the Detroit Locker limited slip works very well, but you have to put up with the chatter and noise. As far as testing a junkyard axle, it's pretty much been described right. Just turn the wheel on one side - if the other side turns the opposite direction, the differential is either an open differential or possibly a limited slip with worn out clutch packs. If the the wheel on the other side turns the same direction, it's probably a limited slip (unless someone welded the spider gears in the differential, making what is called a Lincoln locker - in reference to a Lincoln welder - it's basically a full-time locker done for very cheap - not very likely that you would find one like that).

Clutch-type LSDs rarely last 50K. You have 250? It's long gone. Detroit locker is a bit violent, but their TrueTrac is seamless, smooth, works perfectly and I couldn't be happier with mine. And there are no clutches to wear out. DOC

How do I find the axle ratio and limited slip of my Ford?

To determine the axle ratio of your vehicle, locate the two-digit axle code first, then use your vehicle's towing guide to find the axle ratio that corresponds to that code. If your vehicle has a limited-slip differential, it will be noted as "Limited Slip."

The instructions below will walk you through the steps.

Step 1 - Locate the Axle Code

To find the axle code:

Sample door jamb label with AXLE highlighted

Step 2 - Find the Axle Ratio

To locate the axle ratio after you have found the axle code:

  • Visit the  RV & Trailer Towing Guides page on the Ford Fleet website.

Select the Towing Guide for your vehicle's model year.

Note: Rear axle ratios are available for 2008 and newer models. If you need the rear axle ratio for a vehicle produced before 2008, contact our Customer Relationship Center via Live Chat or call us at 1-800-392-3673 .

  • Refer to the Axle Ratio table to determine your rear axle ratio and limited slip.

Note: To search the Towing Guide, press CTRL + F  to open a search box in your browser. You can then enter any term, such as "Axle Ratio," to search the guide.

2000 Ford Excursion Review

2000 excursion new car test drive, sure it's big, but it's a great piece of hardware., introduction.

Everyone likes to joke about the new Ford Excursion. It is, indeed, the biggest sport-utility vehicle on a planet chock full of SUVs. Its size has drawn sharp criticism from some quarters, charging it with lackluster fuel economy. But the Excursion is no larger than the hundreds of thousands of Ford Super Duty pickups that share its platform. And there are, indeed, some folks who can put a giant sport-utility vehicle to use. They tow heavy trailers, haul bunches of people and move acres of cargo. So who are we to judge? We're here to evaluate, not judge. Besides, we like the Excursion.  Ford did an excellent job on this vehicle. It rides impressively well for a three-quarter ton truck. It is capable of carrying an enormous amount of cargo. Six people and their baggage can travel in supreme comfort; eight or nine people can be belted in when necessary. Best of all, the Excursion provides an exceedingly stable platform for pulling trailers of up to 10,000 pounds.

Ford's new Excursion comes in two levels of trim, XLT and Limited. XLT sports a nice cloth interior with comfortable seats that offer good support for long drives and a high level of standard equipment. The Limited trim adds leather and a few more goodies that are optional on the XLT.  Three engines are available, a V8, a V10 and a diesel. And, of course, there's a choice of two- or four-wheel drive. The base XLT 4x2 retails for $34,135. We drove a $37,450 XLT 4x4 with the V10. The diesel adds about $4,000 to the bottom line.

Based on Ford's new Super Duty F-Series pickup trucks, the 2000 Excursion is more than seven inches longer than the Chevy Suburban, the former SUV heavyweight. Inside is a comfortable interior. It doesn't matter whether you're sitting in the front seats, second row or third row, all of the seats off generous legroom, headroom and elbow room. The dash is attractive and well-designed and all of the controls are easy to find and operate.  Excursion's rear cargo doors are split three ways. You can swing the glass hatch up for quick access to gear. This same glass hatch offers much better visibility rearward while driving than traditional split doors. The rear doors are half height, like Dutch doors. Split in the middle, they can be opened when you've got a trailer attached and can be swung nearly 180 degrees for easier access.  Excursion 4x4 models come standard with Ford's 6.8-liter single overhead-cam Triton V10. It generates 310 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. Ford expects 70 percent of all Excursions will be sold with the V10. A 5.4-liter V8 is available as a no-cost option, but few will be built; it puts out 255 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque. A 7.3-liter diesel engine is also available for about $4,000 that produces 235 horsepower and a whopping 500 foot-pounds of torque.  If you drive off the pavement or on snow-covered roads, you'll want to opt for the $250 limited-slip, the $255 all-terrain tires, and the $75 skid plate. Optional $60 trailer mirrors feature little convex mirrors at the bottom that eliminate blind spots. Ford says the Class IV receiver hitch, which comes standard, is designed to prevent smaller cars from going underneath the rear bumper, while a specially designed BlockerBeam is designed to accomplish the same goal up front.

The Excursion comes with a nicely designed interior. The seats are comfortable and, unlike the Ford Expedition, there's lots of legroom and headroom in the Excursion whether you're in a first-, second- or third-row seat. Six adults can ride in comfort with 48 cubic feet of cargo space left behind them. For shorter trips, like going to a restaurant, the Excursion can seat eight people -- or nine if you order the front bench instead of the bucket seats.  Remove the third-row bench seat, and the Excursion can carry four or five people and a lot of gear. Removing the third-row seat is easy: Flip the seatback forward, yank a bar at the foot of the seat and pull the seat toward the rear of the vehicle; it glides along on rollers. The seat weighs 75 pounds, but in short order I pulled it out and threw it into the back of another SUV on a cold Montana morning.  Set up as a two-seater, the Excursion can carry an outlandish amount of cargo. A sheet of plywood slides in easy and lays flat on the floor. Two people could sleep in comfort on the huge, flat cargo area. Believe it or not, we managed to fill an Excursion. We were finishing up a three-day float down Oregon's Deschutes River. As planned, the river guide in charge of setting up camp had arrived at our vehicles ahead of us. He quickly stuffed all of the supplies from base camp and enough fishing equipment for eight people inside. When he was done stuffing, only seating for two remained and the rear-view mirror was rendered useless. Granted, he could have packed more efficiently, but he was grateful for such a large storage container. After reorganizing the equipment and putting some of it into another vehicle, six of us piled into the Excursion and made the long trip back to the Portland area. Cruising along steadily with this load, the Excursion demonstrated its virtues of size, stability and power. The weary group of fishermen sang its praises all the way back to Portland.

Driving Impression

Cruising along in an Excursion gives you a secure feeling. It's smooth and quiet. The V10 is a delightful engine. It produces 310 horsepower and can propel the Excursion along the Interstate at high rates of speed. The V10 generates a very impressive 425 foot-pounds of torque at 3250 rpm. Tell someone you've got a V10 and they think you're driving a rocket. But an Excursion 4x4 weighs about 7,200-pounds, so its acceleration performance at high altitudes seems no better than an Explorer or Expedition. Still, it had no trouble passing other vehicles on two-lane roads near Yellowstone. It's rock solid at 97 mph where a governor keeps you from going any faster. The EPA doesn't even rate trucks this big, but you should expect fuel economy in the 10-12 mpg range and we've seen 14 mpg on the highway.  If you like diesel engines, you'll love Ford's turbocharged 7.3-liter Power Stroke. It seems unaffected by high altitude and I was amazed at its ability to accelerate past slower cars on two-lane roads. The diesel generates 500 foot-pounds of torque at just 1600 rpm, useful for pulling stumps out of your yard or pulling heavy trailers up steep ramps. Ford worked hard to reduce noise from the diesel both inside and outside the Excursion; but you still shouldn't expect to sneak up on anyone. The diesel gets 16-18 mpg, but adds $4,000 to the bottom line. It takes a lot of long-distance driving to justify that. All Excursions come with a 44-gallon fuel tank, giving the diesel a range of more than 700 miles.  A few Excursions will be available with 5.4-liter V8s, but I suspect they would struggle if you loaded six passengers and luggage and headed for the mountains. It's a big station wagon for the flatlands or an economical engine for fleets.  While the 4x2 comes with Ford's Twin I-beam front suspension and coil springs, the 4x4 uses a solid front axle and leaf springs. Differences in ride and handling between the two are subtle. The 4x4 rides and handles superbly, tackling corners with confidence and offering good grip on dirt roads. Strong crosswinds in the Madison River Valley and an 18-wheeler going in the opposite direction had little effect at high speed.  Of course, that long wheelbase means this is not a serious off-road vehicle. But the part-time four-wheel-drive system and 8.1-inch ground clearance should get you up some pretty gnarly dirt roads in nasty weather. The Excursion does not offer a system like GM's Autotrac, which distributes torque front to rear automatically, so you may have to slow down for slushy, inconsistent conditions. But Ford's clever vacuum-controlled hub-locking system quickly engages four-wheel drive on the fly by pressing a button. A low-range set of gears is ready whenever you need to tackle steep, slippery terrain.  Perhaps most important, the Excursion is rated to tow trailers up to 10,000 pounds, so six fishermen could pull a hefty boat behind them. All Excursions come ready to tow, with a Class IV receiver hitch and factory-wired seven-pin electrical connector; a four-pin adapter is also included. I like overkill when towing long distances through bad weather and the Excursion should pull a 6,000-pound trailer better than an Expedition. Unlike most SUVs, all Excursions come with D load range light-truck tires, LT265/75R-16D. You may want the all-terrain treads if you drive on muddy trails, but the all-season tires are smoother and quieter for towing long distances.  There's no getting around the fact that this is a big vehicle and it's size was a bit more apparent in downtown Portland. However, if you don't mind big rigs, then you'll find this one surprisingly maneuverable and easy to park.

Ford's new Excursion is the king of big sport-utilities. Supremely stable, it feels safe and secure on the open highway. Whether you've got a lot of cargo to carry, a bunch of people to transport, a big trailer to pull or all of the above, the Excursion is ready for whatever you throw its way.

2000 Excursion Limited

  • Add to quote

Hi I am new to this forum and am in need of some help. I am looking at purchasing a used 2000 Excursion Limited for the purposes of towing a travel trailer that has a GVWR of 9000. I have been in contact with an individual who also tows a trailer and he has given me a couple of concerns with this vehicle. However, i wanted to get some insight from people on here who have this vehicle. The details on the truck are as follows: 2000 Limited 99,500 miles Triton V10 VIN #1FMNU42S8YEE15545 My questions are: What rear axle does this vehicle have? or how can I determine this. What tires were standard on these? really looking for the weight range. Will this tow a trailer of this size? I appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you, Brian

Bert

You can dowmload or read an owners manual here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp Page 129 starts the towing lnformation. There's a link on the left for a VIN decoder. That should help with what you need.

thank you for the response. I ran the decoder but it doesn't supply anything about the rear axle. I am really trying to determine the axle ratio to determine the combined weight I could tow. Brian

31 3.73 non-limited slip, F-250/Excursion C1 3.73 limited slip, F-250/Excursion 32 4.10 non-limited slip, F-250 C2 4.10 limited slip, F-250/Excursion 33 4.30 non-limited slip, F-250 C3 4.30 limited slip, F-250/Excursion http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac191/rtg143/Label.jpg

Thanks for the codes. I looked again on the piller sticker and there isn't a code listed. However, I took the vehicle to a mechanic who check the sticker on the diff and determined it's a 3.73 Possie. He also informed me that i need a little work done on it: Back brakes diff serviced new tires so my question is how difficult is it to replace pads on the excursion? thanks, Brian

Ver easy. Take the wheel off and there are 2 bolts holding the caliper on. If you've ever done disc brakes before, you'll have no problem. The park brake is inside the disc, so no special procedure there.

360ci

The Excursion won't have any trouble towing that. 9K is the max weight, so I'm sure the trailer base weight is only around 6.5K plus whatever you want to throw in it (fluids, propane, gear, etc) you'll still be under 9K. My 5.9L V8 3.92axle Durango tows 6.8K with ease. I can imagine the V10 Excursion will be similar as far as power to weight ratio is concerned. Don't worry too much with tires. As long as their a LT (light truck tire) load rated "E", you can tow anything. To put it into some perspective, you'd have to put 2100lbs on the hitch before you'd have to worry about your tires. Just be sure they're at the proper air pressure as well. Not having the diesel engine lowers overall vehicle weight, so you have more payload.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

2000 ford excursion limited slip

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

  1. Excursion limited slip axle advice

Excursion limited slip axle advice. Mostly use my 2000 excursion 4x4 for on road towing. I do get very frustrated with the poor traction with the open diffs. The tag will have the ratio on it in the form of 3 73, and if it's a limited slip the tag would say 3L73. The only options in a factory axle would be friction clutch disk type limited slip, or open differential.

Step 1 - Locate the Axle Code. To find the axle code: 1. View the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver's side, front or rear door panel. 2. Find the word "AXLE" under the bar code. 3. Find the two-digit code under "AXLE."

My 2wd Excursion has an open diff and it was rare for one not to have limited slip. In the early days, they just grabbed what was on the shelf and slapped it in.
