The region which produces the world’s most famous wine

Twitter icon

The world’s most famous sparkling wine, champagne, is ideal for every celebration. The Champagne vineyards, their hillsides, houses and wine cellars, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Everything begins with a specific area of land which, thanks to human talent, produces the most original of wines . This talent ensures that the delicate characteristics of the land are expressed in champagne’s sublime effervescence . This originality very quickly became famous through the drive of the pioneers who made this exceptional wine known to wine enthusiasts all over the world.   The same word to designate a region and the wine where it was born. Champagne only comes from Champagne . Discover the secret of the intimate union between Champagne and champagne. Visit the vineyards which produce the most prestigious wines in the world .

Defined by a law dating from 1927, the area eligible to produce origin-approved (AOC) authentic champagne covers 34,000 hectares . The vineyards are divided into four large regions : Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs and the Côte des Bar. Together they comprise nearly 278,000 individual pieces of land , whose average surface area is two hectares.

1. World Heritage sites: the Hillsides, Houses and wine Cellars of the Champagne region, and Reims Cathedral.

2. The Champagne Tourist Route, with more than 600 km of sign-posted trips.

3. 450 km of walking and cycling tracks and 60 circuits to take you through the vineyards and around the large lakes.

How to plan a wine-tasting tour in Champagne

Tradition meets innovation in this verdant winemaking region, where hallowed tasting rooms pair well with treehouse bars.

Champagne makes the social world turn. And yet, driving between its meticulously groomed vineyards and cream-coloured towns, this French region, rooted in the chalky hills between Paris and the Ardennes, appears remarkably quaint. Local pride in the Pinot and Chardonnay fields — some thought to date back to the Romans — has made this area one of Europe’s most photogenic destinations, and as growers embrace biodiversity and ban pesticides, greenness is everywhere in every sense.

In the regional hub of Reims, just 45 minutes from Paris by train, bars and bistros spill over into pedestrianised streets and wine gardens serve hundreds of local blends. These days Champagne houses want in on the action, too. In the past few years, tasting rooms and taverns have popped up on some of the region’s most venerated estates, while in Epernay, the magnificent Avenue de Champagne buzzes with a thirsty after-work crowd. Relish it all responsibly (remember — spitting is encouraged) on this route through the heart of the region.

Pick your designated driver and start the day with a drive through the Marne Valley, famed for its vine-clad slopes. At Vincelles, the fields part to reveal a Roman road and this revered Champagne house, which has been producing a range of organic wines since 2013. In good weather the Blin family welcomes oenophiles to their hilltop tasting room to gaze out over the landscape with a glass from the 10,000-bottle cellar.

2. Champagne Telmont

Follow the river to Damery where you’ll find the chic Champagne Telmont compound, run according to sustainable principles by its president Ludovic du Plessis. You can book tours of the cellars here, enjoy drinks at the bar or sample a food and wine pairing menu at the communal table. Look out for the photographs of Ludovic with Leonardo DiCaprio, who’s invested in Telmont’s green initiatives.

3. La Table Kobus

Onward to tiny Épernay, where grand Champagne houses like Perrier-Jouët and Moët et Chandon lord it over the Avenue de Champagne. Stop for lunch at this smart bistro, where you’ll find a menu of terrines and fricassées. Corkage is free on weekdays (or €12/£10 from Friday evening to Sunday), so you can take a bottle of Champagne picked up on your travels. Alternatively, order a €25 (£22) half bottle   from the wine list.

4. Pressoria

Stop at the sleepy town of Aÿ, with its half-timbered cottages. In 2021, the old pressing centre was transformed into a sensory Champagne museum. Here, visitors are invited to experience a virtual wine harvest, explore rooms scented with blossom, ‘press’ their own vintage and watch the fermentation process on IMAX-style screens. The exhibition ends in the tasting room, overlooking vineyards.

5. Perching Bar

Detour through the Montagne de Reims nature park. A 30-minute drive into wild terrain will bring you to a forested path and wobbly suspension bridge — the only way in or out of this treehouse wine bar. With hanging armchairs and Champagne buckets strung from the ceiling, it’s the perfect spot to watch the sun go down with a glass. Ask for a plate of biscuits roses de Reims — a pink biscuit traditionally served with Champagne.

6. Le Réfectoire Vranken-Pommery

Finish at the Vranken-Pommery estate, a collection of gothic towers on the road to Reims. You can tour its ancient Champagne cellars then stay for dinner in the dining room in the old refectory, which stays open late. Try the risotto with leek fondue with a glass of one of Pommery’s more affordable Bruts (€15/£13). Finish with profiteroles.

Why You Should Go to Champagne, France—And All the Houses You Should Visit

By Christina Liao

Sacy Champagne France

Tiny bubbles, floral notes, crystal flutes—champagne is often front of mind for joyous, festive occasions; yet somehow Champagne (the region, not the beverage itself) falls to the wayside when travelers plan wine-centric trips in France. Bordeaux and Burgundy tend to get the spotlight—and there’s no reason that they shouldn’t—but there’s something to be said of the famous bubbly’s eponymous territory.

Deserving much more than a day trip from Paris (it’s less than 45 minutes by train from Gare de l’Est), the province is a destination to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace if you truly want to appreciate what it has to offer. Plus, there are more than enough options to keep you busy for a few days. But it’s not just the effervescent tipple that makes the region worth a visit. Its resilience during WWI, paired with its long history of winemaking, is what led parts of Champagne, along with its houses and cellars, to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. When you stroll through the chalk crayères that belong to a few of the maisons , you are quite literally walking through a piece of history. During the war, these underground quarries not only acted as a shelter against bombings, but also served as homes, schools, hospitals (markings on the walls denoting such institutions are still visible), and a way to communicate and travel, undetected by the enemy. So not only do you get your fair share of bubbly while in Champagne, but also the chance to visit historic monuments, too.

And despite the price tag often associated with these precious bottles of sparkling wine, many of the prestigious companies offer public visits and start at very reasonable prices. (Tip: Always opt for one that includes a tasting of both a vintage and non-vintage to compare.) However, others are much more exclusive, only available by either appointment or invitation. When faced with such a predicament, you’ll have to pull out all the stops to get your foot into the door. If you’re a regular at a particularly distinguished restaurant or hotel, a recommendation from a representative there ( Four Seasons Hotel George V’s head sommelier, Eric Beaumard , for example) will go a long way.

Learn about the history of some of your favorite brands, what makes champagne, well, champagne, and leave a little rosy-cheeked after a delightful tasting. Here, a guide to the houses you should absolutely visit along with those that you should aspire to finagle your way into.

Ruinart The first house to be established in Champagne, Maison Ruinart has been around since 1729 and is most recognized for the unique shape of its bottles (and exceptional blanc de blancs). Modeled after those that are depicted in Jean-François de Troy’s 1735 painting Le Déjeuner d'huîtres , it is the oldest representation of champagne, and a replica of it hangs in one of the salons used for tastings. Throughout the property you’ll find additional artwork—the house has worked with a number of artists since 2006 to commission special pieces, including Dustin Yellin and Maarten Baas. Once you head down to the crayères , you’ll find yourself in awe of the labyrinth of chambers, which go down as far as 125 feet. There are even signs of camaraderie in the cellars—you’ll find that over one particular set of aging Ruinart there’s a vial that bears the date of December 9, 2016, and an image of a baby bottle. On this day, the man who finished bottling the wines became the father of twin girls. Talk about a good story. Tours start from 70 euros per adult

PerrierJouët's Maison Belle Epoque in Epernay Champagne

Perrier-Jouët If you’re a fan of Perrier-Jouët (and how could one not be with their elegant Belle Epoque Rosé and very quaffable Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs), you’ll have to really work your connections to get access to their invite-only estate, which just reopened in July after two years of careful restoration and houses the largest private Art Nouveau collection in Europe. However, what perhaps is most captivating are the contemporary pieces peppered throughout the maison , a stark contrast to the classically French–decorated home. Since 2012, the brand has collaborated with artists from Design Miami/ to create some truly impressive projects. In the entrance hall there’s Mischer’Traxler’s Ephemerā , a kinetic table installation where colorful metal plants and insects sprout in and out of the oak surface based on the observer’s proximity, playing a sort of hide-and-seek, encouraging interaction and piquing curiosity. The adjacent bar features Ritsue Mishima’s All’ombra della luce , where 800 clear disks of Murano glass permeated with bubbles in varying sizes hang at different heights from the ceiling. Underground you’ll also find Simon Heijdens’s Phare No. 1-9 , a light installation of suspended, liquid-filled capsules that create abstract floral shapes on the ground, along with Lost Time by Glithero, where loops of beads dangle over a shallow pool in a dark and narrow corridor, coming alive and reflecting off the water when the accompanying lamps are switched on. This is all, of course, in addition to a cellar that houses vintages dating back to 1825.

BillecartSalmon Ay Champagne estate

Billecart-Salmon Family-owned Billecart-Salmon has been in operation for nearly 200 years, and visits to the house are available by appointment from Monday to Friday morning. Now in its sixth generation, the house is run by François Roland-Billecart, who lives on the property, as does his father. You’ll have the chance to explore their cellar, vineyards, and lush garden while trying three of their champagnes. If you’re looking for a remarkable brut rosé, this is the place to go. Tours start from 30 euros per adult

Veuve Clicquot Hotel du Marc library Reims

Veuve Clicquot Madame Clicquot, who took over the champagne house at the age of 27 after her husband’s untimely death, made major strides in the wine-making world. She created the first recorded vintage bubbly in the region and invented the ridding table, a method of dispelling yeast sediments from the bottles that is still used today. She is also credited as the first to produce a blended rosé (the first recorded rosé to have been sold was by Ruinart in 1764, a little over five decades before Clicquot’s, but it’s believed to have been produced via maceration). As you walk through the brand’s crayères , you’ll learn more about the pioneering woman, peek into their Library, where vintages aged for a minimum of 20 years reside (special tastings can be held there, too), and gawk at a bottle that dates back between 1839 and 1841, which was discovered at a shipwreck in 2010. Experts from the house tasted one of the salvaged bottles and found that the champagne still held its own. As a result, the brand submerged a cage of bubbly at the exact location of the wreck in 2014, which will be resurfaced in 40 years and compared with another set of champagne aged underground at the same depth (roughly 174 meters underwater). While we wait for the results—and hope for the chance to try it ourselves—another ambitious aspiration is access to their invite-only Hôtel du Marc. However, it was open to the public for one weekend in 2013, so maybe we actually have a chance of visiting sometime in the future. Tours start from 25 euros per adult, but opt for the 50 euro visit that includes a tasting of La Grande Dame

Moët Chandon Epernay Champagne France

Moët & Chandon and Dom Pérignon Spanning a little over 17 miles, Moët & Chandon is home to the largest cellars in the region. Here you’ll find bottles of both Moët and Dom Pérignon, although public tours and the subsequent tasting are focused on the former. (If you do want to experience the latter, it is only available via private visits, while access to DP’s standalone estate is invite only. You can, however, visit the church in Hautvillers where Dom Pérignon is buried.) A variety of venues are used for their samplings, but for particularly special events, ask to sip your bubbly in their serene garden—it’s a great way to celebrate any occasion. And across the street you’ll spot three alluring buildings behind magnificent gates—those would be their private spaces used for meetings, receptions, and meals for honorary guests. Tours start from 24 euros per adult

Krug champagne house in Reims

Krug If you’re lucky enough to be invited to the Krug Family House, which recently completed a two-year renovation, you’re in for a real treat. Other than the fact that their blanc de blancs and non-vintage Grand Cuvée are exceptional, the cuisine served at the maison is overseen by Reims-born chef Arnaud Lallement of three-Michelin-starred restaurant L’Assiette Champenoise. They even do musical pairings for an unbelievable sensory experience.

Bollinger Ay Champagne

Bollinger James Bond devotees will know Bollinger well (there was even a limited-edition 2009 cuvée for the release of Spectre ), with high praises sung by 007 for the brand’s sparkling wine in several of the series’ movies. Although exclusive, there are opportunities for admirers to visit the maison in Ay, where you’ll get to walk through their incredible vineyards (Bolly owns not only some of the oldest, but also rare ungrafted vines that have endured the pesky phylloxera insect) and a tasting in Madame Lily Bollinger’s beautiful garden. To reserve a tour, e-mail [email protected]

Charles Heidsieck Pavilion Reims Champagne

Charles Heidsieck Oenophiles often rave about Charles Heidsieck’s Brut Réserve while simultaneously expressing how underrated it is. Appreciators will most certainly want to gain access to their VIP-only estate, especially after the recent refurbishment of their reception venue. An airy and sleek structure, the Pavilion (as they call it) is idyllic for a convivial gathering before a visit to the gardens and crayères , and a great space for a portfolio tasting afterward.

Château de Sacy suite Le Roi Soleil

Where to Stay Just 20 minutes out from the center of Reims is the commune of Sacy. Rolling hills replete with vineyards surround the newly opened Château de Sacy. Formerly known as Villa Maria when it was constructed in 1850, it has now been taken over by the Millésime Collection and transformed into an elegant hotel. Consisting of 12 accommodations (two of which are suites), each one is individually named and uniquely designed. Gingham curtains, seafoam-hued walls, crystal-drop chandeliers, and baldachin beds are just some of the striking features in the charming rooms. The on-site Les Vignes restaurant (which has a terrace that’s perfect for an aperitif) dishes out cuisine that’s dedicated to the terroir, such as a casserole of seafood and gnocchi cooked with champagne and a pâté de foie gras served with a champagne gelée. A must, however, is the pigeon—brought out in a copper pan, it’s perfectly roasted, served with Swiss chard, peas, and chanterelle mushrooms, then lightly dressed with a piquant mustard sauce. And it goes without saying that there’s an extensive list of bubbly to help take your meal to the next level. But what can’t be beat is the feeling that you get at Château de Sacy. When you arrive to the hill it’s perched on, you’re immediately swept off your feet with glee and serenity as you look out onto the verdant landscape and the city beyond it. All guests of Champagne Pommery (Reims) enter through the Carnot cellar, the central building of Champagne Pommery, topped with its imposing donjon tower on top of the splendid 116 steps staircase. Best Champagne houses to visit

  • Wine weekends

There has never been a better time to visit Champagne. The region’s hotels, restaurants and visitor experiences are finally catching up to the reputation of the wines themselves.

There’s plenty to see around Reims and Épernay, both possible as day trips from Paris on the train, although it’s certainly worth getting out into the villages to escape the tour groups.

Top tips for visiting Champagne producers

Book in advance, preferably by at least two weeks, and make sure to call if you’re going to be more than a few minutes late. Bear in mind that the roads can be deceptively slow when the tractors are out during the summer months!

Lunch closures are sacred (including for car hire companies in Reims and Épernay), and don’t forget to check for when the numerous public holidays might fall.

Smaller producers are often more reluctant to take visitors during peak times of vineyard work (late June, July and around harvest), and all but the largest houses effectively shut down in August.

If you have the chance to do a little research into the house before you visit you’ll be rewarded. It’s always worth remembering that many smaller producers do not have dedicated staff for greeting guests and doing tours so are taking time out of busy days to share their work. Many smaller growers will not be able to sell you wine because their stocks are fully allocated, although Reims and Épernay have some excellent bottle shops where you might be able to find the wines. Despite this, fees for visits are generally reasonable compared to many other wine regions.

The top Champagne houses to visit:

Ruinart , reims.

Seeing the Gallo-Roman crayères of Reims is essential. Many of the finest of these ancient chalk mines, repurposed for Champagne storage during the 18th and 19th centuries, lie under a hill to the south of the city, so take a taxi or public transport from the centre (or walk for about 40 minutes from the train station). Ruinart, one of the oldest houses in the region, is one of the most atmospheric to visit, with its beautifully maintained house and garden. Its carefully curated tours end with tastings of the house’s supremely elegant Chardonnay-focused cuvées.

Cellar tours £65/€75 per person, with a tasting of two cuvées. Champagne brunch £70/€80 per person, weekends only by reservation.

For a more accessible introduction to Champagne in Reims, head to Mumm’s historic house for a popular tour of its extensive cellars as well of some of its quirkier projects (such as the first bottle of Champagne in space). It’s worth booking on the Grand Cru Experience to make sure you get a taste of the fine and elegant RSRV range, showcasing some of this important house’s renewed efforts with wines from grand cru villages and lengthy lees ageing. During the summer months Mumm also offers a series of unique experiences at weekends, including the thought-provoking sensory tasting and Champagne and cheese pairing.

Pierre Gimonnet & Fils , Cuis

Champagne travel

Visiting independent growers is an essential part of any Champagne itinerary. Many of them work very small, localised parcels of vineyards, but at Gimmonet (one of the larger growers in the region) you can get to know a whole sub-region of Champagne: the northern Côte des Blancs, home of some of Champagne’s greatest Chardonnay. These are impeccably crisp, pure wines which present a vivid picture of the chalky slopes between Cuis and Oger. It’s best to book a visit in advance, although this is one of the rare growers that has published opening hours. After your visit, head down into the Côte des Blancs to find warm welcomes from producers such as Champagnes Lancelot-Pienne, Diebolt-Vallois, Delamotte, Franck Bonville, Doyard and Larmandier-Bernier.

Heading west from Épernay, the Marne Valley is home to some of Champagne’s most charming landscapes. Gently folding hills and woodland replace the uniform carpets of vineyards found around the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, and the Pinot Meunier grape is king. There is none of Champagne’s famous chalk near the surface here – the Pinot Meunier grape thrives on the argile verte or green clay of the local area. With its impeccable vineyard work and an off-grid, sustainable winery full of unique innovations, Cedric Moussé’s family domaine in Cuisles is a top place to explore. You may even get to meet Moussé’s chickens or flock of vineyard sheep.

Most visitors to Champagne arrive from Paris or the north of France, and miss out on the Côte des Bar region, 90 minutes drive south of Reims. From the stunning medieval town of Troyes (and nearby Chardonnay village Montgueux) to the rolling landscapes which are more naturalistic than the north, with farmland, woodland and pasture all cohabiting, the Côte des Bar is a now a hotbed of independent Champagne producers, many of which have moved on from selling their Pinot Noir grapes to the larger houses. Family-run Drappier is the key Champagne house of the south, with a lineup of naturally expressive, gastronomic Champagnes that champion Pinot Noir on the Kimmeridgian limestone that’s also found in Chablis.

The cellars at Ayala. Credit: www.champagne-ayala.fr

Aÿ is one of Champagne’s most important grand cru villages, sitting opposite Épernay in the Grande Vallée de la Marne. Its Pinot Noir has been renowned for centuries, although the house of Ayala (sister house of better-known Aÿ stalwart Bollinger) works increasingly with Chardonnay to create attractively delicate, refreshing Champagnes. Sitting at the top of the village, the property boasts a terrace with superb views, so make sure to book a Prestige Visit (€40). Deeply atmospheric and beautifully lit cellars lie beneath the house, and the lineup of wines is increasingly impressive, especially the Blanc de Blancs and Perle d’Ayala.

Épernay’s grand Avenue de Champagne is the region’s most famous street, but aside from Moët & Chandon and Perrier-Jouët, it is not furnished with as many top-notch visitor experiences as one might expect. Gosset, one of Champagne’s oldest houses based in Aÿ, now owns a fine property in the south of the town, set in a two-hectare park. Book a guided tasting of the house’s invigoratingly dry, taut Champagnes together with a visit into the chalk cellars beneath the domaine. There’s also a bar and terrace for an informal drink. If you’re on a day trip without a car it’s about a 30 minute walk to the picturesque vineyards of Pierry and Moussy. Alternatively, head to Champagne Alfred Gratien in the town centre for a contrast in Champagne styles.

Can I wear jeans to a winery?

Yes! Jeans are acceptable year-round – we call it wine country casual (for women — sundresses, blouses and skirts, nice jeans, wedges, sandals, etc.; for men – golf shirts, khaki pants, nice jeans, dressier shorts, stylish sneakers, boat shoes, etc.).

A more upscale winery might call for darker denim, and be sure to dress in layers as many winery experiences take place outdoors and tours often take guests through wine caves and chilled cellar areas.

How do I taste wine?

First of all: Wine should be enjoyed , so don't overthink it – have fun and drink what you like.

If you want to taste like a professional:

  • LOOK at the color and clarity
  • SWIRL to release the aromas
  • SNIFF to prepare your palate
  • SIP and enjoy the complexities
  • Spit into a "dump bucket" if you don't want to get inebriated.

Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards opened its doors in February 1989 in Clermont, Florida and sits on a 127-acre estate in gently rolling countryside some 25 miles west of downtown Orlando. This area was once the center of the State's grape industry. Lakeridge ranks as Florida's largest premium winery, and remains a pioneer in the development of premium and sparkling wines from the native Muscadine grape varieties Noble, Carlos and Welder, as well as Vinifera varieties to include Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Together, these labels have won many awards for excellence in winemaking, over 1,500 so far with more to come each season

You can find our wines at supermarkets or wine shops throughout the state of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. The wines sold at each location can vary, if you do not see your favorite Lakeridge wine at your favorite location you can request it through the store manager.

Muscadine Grapes, the Super Fruit of the South!

Explore Arizona's Wine Regions

An Unexpected Vintage

Wine Country

Wineries in arizona.

Arizona's diversity shines through in its people, its experiences and even its landscapes — a choice few of which present the perfect conditions for growing grapes.

Will travel for wine? Arizona entered the wine business back in the 1970s and created a wine culture today that honors the agricultural bounty of the state’s high deserts and the dedication of the people who tend the vines at more than 30 wineries in Arizona. Tasting rooms have elevated Arizona’s wine reputation even in areas far removed from the vineyards. Restaurants and bars statewide, in small towns and big cities, have added the flavors of Arizona to their menus. Wherever your travels take you, cheers to Arizona.

Southern Arizona Wine Country

With climate and soil conditions comparable to wine regions in California and Argentina, Arizona’s southern high deserts made the state a major player in international wine circles. Willcox and Sonoita are the most prolific Arizona wine regions, with their vast valley farmlands producing nearly three quarters of the state’s grapes to produce award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot varietals. Sonoita was the first location in Arizona to be designated as an American Viticultural Area. Willcox followed and the Verde Valley recently joined the trio. See the handiwork of passionate growers and makers at the tasting rooms in Sonoita and Willcox during your wine country tour of Southern Arizona.

North & Central Arizona Wine Country

The neighboring cities of Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Jerome, Cornville, Camp Verde and Sedona have created a vibrant wine culture in central Arizona. The Verde Valley’s climate has much in common with Mediterranean wine growing regions. Volcanic soils, mild winters and summers with hot days and cool nights produce grapes with thick skins, dark colors and big flavors. Tasting rooms transformed Old Town Cottonwood from a sleepy historic main street into a bustling collection of shops and eateries that attract visitors year-round. Wineries in Cornville and Sedona set up their tasting rooms along the banks of beautiful Oak Creek, and even rugged Jerome and Camp Verde show their softer side with fine wine pairings at area eateries. Plus, wine growing is literally part of the curriculum at Yavapai College, where its Southwest Wine Center operates a student-run estate vineyard that offers vine-to-bottle education.

Plan your trip and download our Arizona Wine brochure, Savoring Arizona , and get started exploring the state's burgeoning wine regions.

London Marathon runner wine challenge goes viral. Photo: Tom Gilbey/PA Wire

London Marathon ‘wine guy’ on how he sampled 25 wines during race

Vintner Tom Gilbey raised more than £13,000 for hospice charity with challenge that went viral on social media

A wine merchant who blind tasted a different glass of wine at each mile of the London Marathon has said he feels “honoured” his challenge went viral on social media, as he surpassed his fundraising target.

Tom Gilbey, nicknamed “the wine guy”, sampled 25 glasses of wine during the race, stopping to guess the drink’s grape variety, country of origin and vintage at each mile.

A video he posted on TikTok has amassed more than 3.2m views. He had his first sip at about 9.30am, shortly after the race began.

Gilbey said he aimed to raise £2,000 for Sobell House hospice charity in Oxford, which looked after his mum in her final days of life. His fundraiser has now passed £13,000.

London Marathon ‘wine guy’ samples 25 wines during race – video

On his JustGiving page he said he was running the London Marathon “to raise money for the wonderful team at Sobell House hospice, who nursed and cared for my dear Mum in her last few days”, and that he hoped to “not die doing it”.

Gilbey, based in London, said the marathon went “really well” and that he had been spurred on by the treat of a taste of wine after each mile.

Of the 25 glasses sampled, Gilbey said he got four completely wrong, seven spot on and the rest mostly right.

He completed the race in four hours, 41 minutes, including stops for drinking. “It’s my first experience of this going absolutely mad and I feel very honoured,” he said.

“It’s just incredible and it’s great because that’s what it’s all about. It’s for a great charity and they’re one of many hospices that just work their socks off to make massive differences.”

The wines ranged from bottles bought at petrol stations, mini bottles and canned wine, to a £40 barolo.

“It was hilarious because when you’re overtaken by a fridge and double-humped camel, you could get really depressed unless you knew there was a nice wine around the corner with some friendly faces to support you,” he said.

Gilbey, who runs wine businesses and events, said he had avoided feeling tipsy by only drinking small sips of wine, or by spitting it out after tasting.

“If they were good, I might swallow it and if they were bad, they went on the road,” he said. “I think the pain of the running allowed me to not feel anything other than the urge to finish. I think it’s a great way to stay sober.”

He celebrated his achievement by drinking a glass of champagne after completing the race.

“I was totally exhausted, totally cooked, but it was just such a great day and the atmosphere is just too fabulous for words so really, it doesn’t matter how painful it is,” Gilbey said.

Asked if he would ever take on a similar challenge again, he said: “100% not, but if you asked me if I would advise anybody else to do something like this, I would go, 100% yes.

“I think in life, sometimes you get a silly idea that resonates but two silly ideas rarely resonate, so I’d encourage everybody to have a silly idea for a good cause and see what happens.”

This award-winning Arizona wine maker closed his only metro Phoenix tasting room

champagne winery tour

Merkin Vineyards tasting room at the corner of Stetson Drive and Sixth Avenue in Old Town Scottsdale closed after a final service on April 21.

Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of the Puscifer, Tool and A Perfect Circle opened the Scottsdale tasting room in 2019 to offer a taste of his Verde Valley and Willcox wines from Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars.

In addition to wine by the bottle, glass and flights, the tasting room also offered a food menu of pasta, pizzas, salads, charcuterie boards and desserts.

On April 17, Merkin Vineyards posted a photo of the owner on Instagram , where the caption invited everyone to come celebrate the owner's 60th birthday at the Old Town tasting room. But as of April 22, the establishment closed permanently.

According to a statement from Merkin Vineyards, the lease on the Old Town Scottsdale’s tasting room ended, but they are "actively working to relocate the tasting room to a new site in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area."

In the meantime, fans will have to make the trek to Cottonwood to visit Caduceus Cellars and Four 8 Wineworks' tasting room, Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria , Four 8 Fried Chicken and VSC Ventura Room, which offers private wine and dining experience.

Vancouver international wine festival: global tasting in your glass.

45th year anniversary of the Vancouver International Wine Festival held in beautiful British ... [+] Columbia,, Canada.

Sit on a bench in Stanley Park long enough and you’ll hear a symphony of languages spoken. Stroll down the streets of Gastown and be ready to encounter a fusion of cuisines from dozens of cultures. Take a closer look at British Columbia’s biggest city and there also lies a vineyard of international connection. No event encapsulates this global unity through the art of winemaking quite like the Vancouver International Wine Festival . From the rolling hills of Sonoma and Napa Valley to the coastlines of New Zealand, the world of wine is as diverse as the cultures and climatic zones that nurture its vines. This unrivaled celebration of oenophilia is a testament to the worldwide beauty found in each and every glass.

The eight-day festival, sponsored by Delta Airlines, celebrated its 45 th year in late February/early March and featured 43 events including a Bacchanalia Gala Dinner + Auction, Wine/Spirits/Food Seminars, and a truly global wine tasting experience.

United Nations of Wine

This is my third time attending the Vancouver International Wine Festival and it is always like stepping into a veritable United Nations of wine. Strolling through the Vancouver Convention Centre, I made my way over to the full-size festival map to make my usual attack plan. There were over 1,200 different wines being poured by 149 wineries from the 12 participating countries this year. Since I was attending the International Festival Tasting on Friday and Saturday here was my plan:

Night 1: Italian Wines

Night 2: All other countries - Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Croatia, France, Greece, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, and the USA.

Does the math seem off? Allow me to explain. Each year the festival selects a “featured region” and this year patrons were able to Discover Italy . This meant 71 out of the 149 wineries in the tasting room were from Italy. Given these facts it seemed appropriate to give Italy its own day with my palate.

Vancouver International Wine Festival "Put one Sparkle In"

Many of the known and critically-acclaimed producers from Italy were on display. From Bottega starting off the night for wine lovers with their Prosecco Sparkling Wines to Pio Cesare reminding me why I love Barbaresco and Barolo. However the highlight of my Italian night was Ruffino thanks to their Senior Global Brand Ambassador, Beppe d’Andrea. When I met him, he asked me if I had tried his wines, to which I replied, “No.” He smiled, grabbed three bottles, pointed to seats near his booth, and said, “Let’s change that, sir.” He was kind enough to pour the following:

The Modus 2020 has soft tannins with a complex bouquet of blackberries and established flowers that evolve into cinnamon and clove notes.

Riserva Ducale Oro 2019

This 2019 Chianti boasts an impressive structure with elegant tannins, supported by a nice acidity. Intense notes of cherry, plum, and violet with hints of eucalyptus, chocolate, and black pepper.

Rosso Di Marte Bolgheri 2021

The wine is full bodied with silky tannins resulting in a finish that is reminiscent of red fruits, balsamic, and tobacco. It has intense blueberry and black currant notes that finishes with hints of tobacco and sweet spices.

After thanking Beppe for his time and experience I walked around the tasting room a bit more to scope out some food options. I decided to call it a night with dessert gelato from D’oro Gelato e Caffè .

Evening Tasting at the 45th Annual Vancouver International Wine Festival

“Vancouver’s annual celebration of the grape was another wonderful week of wine and food,” says Harry Hertscheg, executive director of the festival. “With 147 wineries from 12 countries, including 71 wineries from our theme country Italy, we brought the world of wine to members of the public and trade, featuring hundreds of wines exclusive to the festival. From the Bacchanalia Gala Dinner + Auction, where we raised $165,000 for our charitable beneficiary, Bard on the Beach , to the PICA Kitchen Party, we also showcased Vancouver’s award-winning culinary scene through winery dinners and other special events. We look forward to another incredible year in 2025, when we feature the wines of the USA.”

Aging to Perfection: 45 years and counting

This year’s success is measured not only in the wine glasses raised, but also the paddles raised at the Bacchanalia Gala Dinner + Auction for Bard on the Beach Theatre Society. The festival has raised more than $2.2 million dollars for Bard in the past 10 years to support their mission of creating transformational experiences through exceptional theater, training, and education opportunities that inspire, resonate, and promote the exchange of ideas. The annual support helps Bard to maintain its signature high artistic standards and educational programs, while also supporting its goal to keep its programming affordable for hundreds of thousands of local residents, students, and Vancouver visitors.

Looking ahead, the Vancouver International Wine Festival is poised to continue its legacy of uniting the global community of wine. In 2025 the “Wines of the USA” will be the featured region, hopefully facilitating lesser-known wine regions from the United States to be highlighted. Learn more about the upcoming 46th year here .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
