Sometimes travel plans don’t go as expected. For this reason, many travelers purchase a travel insurance policy before a trip begins. Travel insurance can help you avoid losing money by reimbursing you for pre-paid travel costs for covered incidents when your travel plans get disrupted, and you qualify for a covered reason.

While travel insurance can be beneficial, you may wonder, can you cancel travel insurance and get a refund if you change your mind? In some situations, you may be able to cancel your travel insurance policy and get an insurance premium refund. We’ve outlined the essential details below so you know what to expect if you need a refund.

» Learn more: What to know before buying travel insurance

Can you get a travel insurance refund?

Yes, getting a travel insurance refund is possible, depending on when you cancel the policy. To qualify for a premium refund, most insurance companies require the policy to be canceled during the review period outlined in the policy terms.

Otherwise, you won’t be eligible for a refund on your travel insurance. That’s why paying attention to this timeline is essential when buying coverage.

Some insurers call this timeframe a money-back guarantee period, while others call it a review or free look period. The timing varies by policy and insurer, but it’s often between 10 to 15 days.

This period gives travelers time to review the policy documents to ensure it meets their coverage needs. If your travel insurance policy has a money-back guarantee or review period, you can cancel for any reason and receive a full refund within the timeframe if you haven’t filed a claim or departed for your trip yet.

But you won’t get a premium refund if you cancel your policy after the review period. Reviewing the policy terms before purchasing a travel insurance policy is recommended so you know what to expect before buying coverage. You can find details regarding this review timeline in the policy paperwork.

To qualify for a refund when canceling your policy during the review period outlined in your travel insurance policy, you must not have filed a claim or started your trip yet.

Do you qualify for a refund if your trip is delayed or canceled?

You may wonder, is travel insurance refundable if the trip is canceled? Many comprehensive travel insurance policies include trip delay, trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

You must meet the conditions of the coverage outlined in your policy and have a covered reason to qualify for reimbursement for prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs or additional trip expenses that occur due to covered delays, interruptions, and cancellations. But you won’t be eligible for a refund of travel insurance policy premiums.

CFAR travel insurance add-on offers greater flexibility

If you want a more flexible solution, you may want to add Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance (CFAR) coverage to your travel insurance policy.

Some travelers prefer the added protection that CFAR coverage offers. This supplemental coverage costs extra but provides more flexibility for cancellations. However, not every insurance company offers it. You should also be aware that many insurance providers require this coverage to be purchased within a set number of days of making your initial trip payment.

CFAR coverage can provide a partial refund for eligible nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You can cancel for any reason, as the name suggests, but you must cancel within the timeframe listed in your policy.

Canceling the day of, for example, is usually not allowed. Many insurers require travelers to cancel at least two days before their trip to qualify for a partial refund.

Reasons why a traveler might cancel their travel insurance policy

Some travelers cancel their travel insurance policy because it doesn’t meet their needs. During the review period mentioned above, travelers should review the terms and conditions to ensure the chosen policy meets their expectations and is a good fit for their trip.

But that’s not the only reason a traveler might consider canceling their policy. Some travelers may wish to cancel their insurance policy if they’ve decided they no longer want to take a trip due to work schedule changes, sickness or other personal reasons.

To cancel and be eligible for reasons like sickness or job schedule changes, travelers need CFAR coverage in their travel insurance policy to receive a partial refund for eligible prepaid trip costs.

How to cancel a travel insurance policy

Contact your insurance company directly to cancel your travel insurance policy. Some insurance providers allow you to cancel your coverage online or by phone. But some insurers require policyholders to cancel their insurance policy in writing. Your best bet is to check with your insurer to learn more about the cancellation process.

Final thoughts regarding a travel insurance refund

If you plan to purchase a travel insurance policy for your next trip, review all policy terms so you can decide early on if it’s the right coverage for you. You will also want to know the outlined timeline to cancel if necessary.

If you want to boost your coverage and be eligible for a partial refund if you get sick or change your plans before departing for your trip, you may want to consider adding CFAR coverage to your policy. Doing this can give you greater peace of mind and more flexibility.

PHILIPPINE AIRLINES: How to REBOOK / REFUND for Canceled Flights Due to Covid-19 thru MyPAL Request Hub

PHILIPPINE AIRLINES: How to REBOOK / REFUND for Canceled Flights Due to Covid-19 thru MyPAL Request Hub

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

UPDATE: Due to the extension of the Enhanced Community Quarantine, PAL has also canceled ALL domestic and international flights up to May 31, 2020. The airline intends to resume operations on June 1.

Philippine Airlines has announced that they will be suspending all their domestic and international flights up to May 31. Earlier, the country’s flag carrier had also ceased operations of all flights scheduled until May 15. The move was in compliance with the government’s enhanced community quarantine measure some parts of the country.

If your flight was scheduled on February to May 31 or affected by COVID-19-related disruptions, PAL is offering three options. Here’s a quick summary:

Here’s the infographic released by PAL for a quick look at your options:

pal travel insurance refund

  • REBOOK or REROUTE the flight for FREE. You can book the flight on another date (after May 31, 2020). No rebooking fee. For the first rebooking, no fare difference will be collected. But on succeeding rebookings, fare difference may apply.
  • Convert the booking to a TRAVEL VOUCHER. You can get the value of your ticket + additional 10% credited to the voucher, which you can use to book another PAL flight in the future. It’s valid for one year.
  • Request a REFUND. You can get a refund of the amount you paid for.

To facilitate the processing, PAL set up the myPAL Request Hub , an online form that you can use to start any of these requests online.

Here’s how to do it.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Visit the myPAL Request Hub.

You can find it at: https://mypal.vip/url/RequestHub .

You will be redirected to a Microsoft Office online form. Whether you wish to rebook, get a travel voucher, or file a refund request, you will be using the same form.

The first thing the form will ask you is: Where did you purchase your ticket?

If you booked the ticket directly with PAL (PAL website, PAL mobile app, PAL ticket office, PAL contact center), you can use this form.

If you booked with a travel agency, you need to contact your travel agent and let them coordinate with PAL regarding the next steps. This covers both physical travel agencies and online travel agencies like Expedia, Traveloka, etc.

2. Accomplish the online form.

Provide the following information:

pal travel insurance refund

  • Passenger Name. Enter the name as it appears on the booking.
  • Booking Reference or Ticket Number. Make sure it’s correct.
  • Contact details. Email Address and contact number.
  • Citizenship. Choose your country of citizenship on the dropdown menu.
  • Point of Origin. Enter the 3 letter code for the origin. Example: MNL for Manila, CEB for Cebu, NRT for Narita)

3. Choose: REBOOK, REFUND or TRAVEL VOUCHER?

Option a: rebook.

pal travel insurance refund

If you choose to REBOOK, you will be asked to indicate the details of your original flights and the details of your new preferred flights. But take note of the following:

  • Pick 3 new preferred flights. You may choose the same flight number for a different date, a different flight number for the same date, or completely new flight dates and numbers.
  • List your 3 target flights in order of priority. How you arrange them will be strictly followed. In cases when there are no more seats in the same booking/cabin class in the first option, PAL will automatically proceed to rebook you in the second, then the third option.
  • In case your rebooking requires additional payments, a myPAL Request Hub officers will send a confirmation email and payment instructions.

In addition, ensure that you list the flight per one-way segment. For example:

  • If the booking is round-trip only: – Davao-Manila (Leg 1) – Manila-Davao (Leg2)
  • If the booking is multi-city: – Tagbilaran-Manila (Leg 1) – Manila-Los Angeles (Leg 2) – Los-Angeles-Manila (Leg 3) – Manila-Tagbilaran (Leg 4)

After providing all the needed information, click on SUBMIT!

pal travel insurance refund

If you’re supposed to fly between March 15 and May 31, or your flight is affected by COVID-19-related cancellations or travel ban, the following applies:

  • NO PENALTIES*
  • No Fare Difference* (on the first rebooking and as long as it’s within the same cabin and class)
  • Travel should be before November 30, 2020 or within ticket validity (whichever comes first)

*You can rebook it multiple times but only the first rebooking is FREE. Rebooking fee and fare difference may apply on succeeding rebookings.

If your flight is NOT canceled, you can still change your flight but it will be considered “voluntary.” Here’s what it entails:

  • No Penalties
  • Fare Difference and taxes may be collected
  • Travel within ticket validity
  • Request must be submitted 7 days before flight schedule.

The new travel dates are subject to blackout date limitations: (United States /Canada to Manila) June 15 to July 31 outbound (Manila to United States /Canada) July 15 to Sep 15.

OPTION B: TRAVEL VOUCHER

By selecting this, you’ll be converting the value of your ticket to a TRAVEL VOUCHER, which you can use to book another PAL flight in the future. On top of that, you’ll also get 10% of the base fare ADDED to the voucher.

The travel voucher will be valid for 1 year from issuance, for travel up to 12 months out.

pal travel insurance refund

  • On the dropdown menu, choose TRAVEL VOUCHER then click on NEXT.
  • On the next page, in the REMARKS field, you can enter any information that you think might be helpful in processing your request.

Click SUBMIT on the next page.

OPTION C: REFUND

If you don’t want to rebook or convert your booking to a travel voucher, you can also request a refund.

pal travel insurance refund

  • On the dropdown menu, choose REFUND then click on NEXT.
  • Click on SUBMIT.

NO PENALTIES if you belong to the following:

  • Passengers supposed to fly on March 15 to May 31, 2020
  • Passengers affected by COVID-19 Cancellations or travel bans

Due to the volume of requests, processing of refunds may take 3 to 4 months from lifting of enhanced community quarantine.

4. Wait for a confirmation email.

You should receive a confirmation email within the next 5 to 7 business days.

In case your transaction requires additional payments, a myPAL Request Hub officers will also send payment instructions.

Yosh Dimen

Hi Albert, hmmm, their form clearly states up to April 30 for refund. (See screenshot here: https://www.thepoortraveler.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/PAL-Refund-Form-1.jpg )

We’ll try to confirm by calling too. Hopefully they’d be able to clear it up.

Althea Besa

Hi there. Would you know whether I can get a refund if my ticket is “non-refundable” or is PAL offering to refund all classes of tickets?

Myleene

For refund, what about the insurance that has been paid.? Insurance has to be included on the refund too.

Joanna

Were they able to refund the insurance too? How did the refund amount computed? Kindly let me know if the full payment has been refunded. Thanks Myleene.

Eh paano naman yong flight na pina cancel na? Na binarat ng travel agent? (My husband book 4tickets flight for Davao last march 16 coz they have some business in Davao ct.) After Davao they will travel by land and roro going back to Iloilo City. But when we read that mayor Sara advise not to visit Davao for the meantime because of this covid 19, and thinking na maabotan sila ng ECQ? they decided not to travel anymore. Now, the travel agent wont accept thier cancellation because PAL is still having flights going to davao? They tried to rebook it but they have to add 2000+ each for rebooking. Later on they agreed to refund the tickets after one month but they only returned ph2700+ from the original ph13,000+ price of d 4tickets.. Ano po ba ang guidelines ng PAL at ng mga travel agent sa mga ganitong sitwasyon ngayon? Mukhang di po nakaka intindi ang travel agent na ito.

jomai

hello. for international flights can we get your opinion po if its better to do VOUCHER INSTEAD OF REBOOKING? im scheduled po for may 6. but i can rebook for aug. my concern is i might pay the fare difference pa vs the 10% base fare value added to the voucher is a good deal. im worried i might not be able to book for august using the voucher. any tip would be greatly appreciated po. thank you and god bless!

My flight supposed to be last April 22,2020 returning to Dubai/UAE But because of Covid-19 the PAL automatic cancelled all flights from Domestic to Int’l Now my problems are,I try to contact the Travel Agent in Dubai/UAE,but no one answer my call How I rebook my Ticket since Im here in Dumaguuete City Negros Oriental, also I try to call the tel no.locate on there web site in Dumaguete City but still on ring. Please help me to rebook my ticket

rej

question: for the form fill-up, it asks for ticket number , i only have my booking reference number. and it wont accept this in the form. do you know why this is so?

I already sent my request for rebooking over a week ago. It’s just so frustrating that up until now I haven’t received any confirmation regarding my request. I have been calling them everyday, almost 5 times a day but I just can’t get through… it just keeps ringing. Honestly, it’s so exasperating that I’ve sent my request 3 times na. Thousands of Filipinos are stuck overseas and PAL’s rebooking process is a failure.

Alexie

My original flight was March 16, 2020 from Vancouver to manila. But because of the Covid-19 situation I rebooked it to may 18, 2020 and paid a fare difference. Then PAL cancelled all flights from Canada until May 31, 2020. If I will request for refund, is the fare difference included in the refund? Will there be any fee deducted from my refund?

Tim

My PAL flight had an engine failure on November 21st, 2019.

We achieved PAL “refund status” in January 2020.

Nearly six months after the failed flight, PAL has stopped responding and I’ve never seen a dime of the thousands of dollars I gave them for the worst airline experience of my life.

Good luck getting a refund.

I’m not convinced this company will be around long enough to honor a travel voucher.

Estrellita G. Nera

I tried to request rebooking but has not gotten confirmation of the rebooking other than they received the request and that an agent will get back to me.honestly, their life as well mine, will be more relaxed if they allow me to rebook just like I did on initial booking.! there will be either available or not available seat for the day ,so I can get the next day etc! apparently, PAL has no organization yet! it should have resume their online booking with rebooking option! ticketing office still closed!

Emely M. Maladia

Good evening! My concern is about my ticket was March 24 my flight but it’s affected of lockdown, so until when the effective flight? which is now isn’t Good to travel for vacation.. until when I rebooked it?

Emely m.maladaia

My flight was goes to pagadian city 24 of March but due to COVID 19 was suspended..and until when it effective?

Shailaden M. Macarimbang

Hi I am confirmed passenger on June 13 2020 for Kuala Lumpur to Manila and cancelled by PAL without notification. Please advice when is the expected date on the next flight.

Eugenia Soriano

We’re booked last May 9 to June 4, 2020 from toronto to manila, but our flight was been cancelled. We apply the travel voucher for 5 passenger but until now no respond from philippine airlines. We try to call PAL a couple times but unfortunately it is so hard to get intouch with them. We just want to know when can we be able to receive our travel voucher and until when it will be effective. PLEASE if anyone from PAL office reply to this matter it would be much appreciated by your passengers.

Laurence Agate

Good luck getting a refund from PAL. I have now had 2 tickets cancelled due to COVID-19, and despite following the instructions as shown above more than 3 months ago they will not even acknowledge my refund request – even though their website says they will respond in 5-7 days!!! All emails sent to them go unanswered. Shockingly bad airline – the only airline I know of that will not respond to passengers requiring COVID-19 refunds. My advice – use any airline other than PAL for future bookings if you can as PAL do not care about their customers.

Ruben D. Almendras

I filed for refund for our family trip from Cebu/Manila-Osaka-Cebu/Manila scheduled on June 14, 2020 through the Cebu-Lahug ticket office where I bought the 19 plane tickets. This was filed in July 2020. I provided all info including the Credit cards to which the refund should be credited. Sometime in September, I got an email advising me of the refund of 4 of the tickets but no credit was received in my Credit Cards. I have not received any further communications since then. As i am a Sr. Citizen, I have not have an opportunity to visit the PAL office. I have all the printed copies of the 19 tickets. Appreciate if you can help in giving me a feedback of the status of our refund requests. Thank you. Ruben D. Almendras.

Passenger Options for Cancelled Flights: Philippine Airlines Refund, Rebooking, Travel Fund

Icon Follow En Us

Philippine Airlines assures its customers that their current tickets are secure and valid. As a result of the COVID-19 situation, it has modified some of its regulations to provide greater convenience for its valuable passengers.

For the protection of everyone, anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 is not allowed to board a Philippine Airlines flight or visit one of its offices (PAL Ticket Offices, Cargo Offices, etc.). With additional details available on this page, you may change your reservations using our Reservation Hotline or myPAL Request Hub .

Passenger Options For Cancelled Flights: Philippine Airlines Refund, Rebooking, Travel Fund

What are your options if you need to change your reservation due to flight cancellations or health reasons? If your flight is canceled or subject to a travel ban, here are your options:

Passenger Options for Cancelled Flights

Philippine airlines refund.

A passenger with a booked and paid ticket is entitled to a refund without penalties if the flight is canceled or restricted because of government action, for instance, a travel ban. Philippine Airlines offers the option of refunding the ticket according to fare rules if the involved trip is not affected by cancellations or a travel ban. Depending on the schedule, status, and issuance date of the ticket, the refund may be subject to any number of fines.

Philippine Airlines is receiving an unusually high number of refund requests due to the sudden travel changes caused by the restrictions imposed on International and Domestic travel. Because of the constraints on international and domestic travel, the airline has been dealing with many itinerary changes. However, it is working hard to improve our procedures to address this problem.

Requests for refunds may be made through the myPAL Request Hub, PAL Ticket Offices, or our PAL Reservations Hotline. A Refund Application Reference Number will be assigned after the Request is initially processed.

Without penalties, you may cancel your ticket and receive a full refund, excluding Ticketing Service Charge (TSC). For domestic tickets issued on March 1, 2021, the Ticketing Service Charge (TSC) is refundable for unused or non-refundable for used (partial or whole) tickets.

Rebook or Reroute your Ticket

The option to rebook to another flight within 60 days of the original flight in the same booking class or higher within the same cabin class is available if the selected date is within the period of validity of your ticket (or within thirty days from the date Of ticket expiration), with no penalty. This choice is presently (at this time) unlimited and free of charge.

The difference in fares, reimbursements, taxes, and no-show fees may be charged.

Convert your ticket to Travel Credits

The unused net value and taxes of your ticket. The term “unused net value” refers to the remaining base fare minus any commissions or other fees/charges. Voucher validity is one year from the date of issue. Before ticket expiration, conversion must be done to Travel Credits. The redeemed ticket’s fare rules apply to travel. For the full terms and conditions of the Travel Credits, click here .

If your flight is not affected by cancellations or a travel ban, you may request voluntary changes to your itinerary using the new No-Worry Flight Fare Brand. All modifications must be made within the ticket validity period, and any change fees will be calculated based on the route’s fare conditions.

Cancel Travel Insurance Refund: Can You Get a Refund?

Travel insurance provides valuable coverage and peace of mind for unexpected events during your trip. However, circumstances can change, and you may find yourself needing to cancel your travel insurance policy. In such cases, it’s important to understand the terms and conditions of your policy and the potential for obtaining a refund. In this article, we will explore the topic of canceling travel insurance and the possibility of receiving a refund.

Understanding Travel Insurance Policies

Before delving into the process of canceling travel insurance, it’s essential to thoroughly understand the terms and conditions of your policy. Each insurance provider may have different guidelines regarding cancellations and refunds. Therefore, carefully review your policy document or contact your insurance company directly for specific information.

Reasons for Canceling Travel Insurance

Several reasons may lead to the cancellation of travel insurance. Some common scenarios include:

1. Change of Travel Plans

You might decide to alter your travel itinerary or cancel your trip altogether due to personal reasons, such as family emergencies, health issues, or work commitments.

2. Coverage Overlap

In certain situations, you might realize that your existing policies or credit card benefits already provide adequate coverage for your trip. In such cases, canceling your travel insurance could be a logical choice.

3. Unsatisfactory Policy Terms

Upon careful examination of your policy, you might discover that it doesn’t meet your specific requirements or fails to cover certain aspects that are crucial to you. This dissatisfaction could prompt you to cancel the insurance.

Refund Policies and Conditions

The potential for receiving a refund largely depends on the terms and conditions set forth by your insurance provider. Some key factors that influence refund eligibility include:

1. Refundable vs. Non-Refundable Policies

Certain insurance policies may offer a refund within a specified period, commonly known as a “free look” period. However, many policies may be non-refundable, meaning cancellation after the designated period will not result in a refund.

2. Administrative Fees and Charges

Insurance providers might impose administrative fees or charges for processing cancellations. These fees can vary, so it’s crucial to review your policy or consult your insurance company to understand the potential deductions.

3. Refund Percentage and Proration

If your policy allows for refunds, the amount you receive might be a percentage of the total premium paid, based on the time elapsed since the policy purchase. Additionally, refunds may be subject to proration, where the refundable amount decreases as your trip departure date approaches.

How to Cancel Travel Insurance

To cancel your travel insurance, follow these general steps:

  • Review your policy document: Familiarize yourself with the cancellation process outlined in your policy document. Look for specific instructions on cancellation procedures and refund eligibility.
  • Contact your insurance provider: Reach out to your insurance company directly to initiate the cancellation process. Provide them with your policy details, and follow any additional steps they may require.
  • Submit a cancellation request: Fill out any necessary forms or provide the required information to request the cancellation of your policy formally.
  • Keep documentation: Maintain copies of all correspondence and documents related to your cancellation request for future reference.

Timeframes for Requesting Refunds

Insurance providers typically set specific timeframes for canceling a policy and requesting a refund. These timeframes may vary, but they are commonly within a specific number of days from the date of purchase or before the trip departure date. It’s crucial to adhere to these deadlines to maximize your chances of obtaining a refund.

Exceptions and Non-Refundable Policies

While some travel insurance policies may allow refunds, others might be non-refundable under any circumstances. Additionally, certain circumstances, such as filing a claim or the occurrence of a covered event, could impact the eligibility for a refund. It’s essential to carefully review your policy and consult your insurance provider to understand any exceptions or non-refundable situations.

Alternative Options for Canceling Travel Insurance

Consider alternative solutions if canceling your travel insurance policy does not offer a refund or is not the most favorable option. These might include:

  • Policy Transfer: Some insurance providers allow you to transfer your policy to another person who is taking over your trip. This can be useful if you are unable to go on the trip but someone else can utilize the coverage.
  • Trip Date Change: Instead of canceling your policy, you may have the option to modify the trip dates, allowing you to use the insurance coverage for a future journey.
  • Policy Extension: If you plan to reschedule your trip, inquire with your insurance provider about the possibility of extending the policy to cover the new travel dates.

Canceling travel insurance and obtaining a refund is possible, but it largely depends on the terms and conditions of your policy. Understanding the guidelines set by your insurance provider, such as refund eligibility, timeframes, and potential administrative fees, is crucial. Be sure to review your policy document carefully and contact your insurance company directly for personalized assistance regarding the cancellation process.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I cancel my travel insurance policy after the trip has started? Unfortunately, most insurance policies cannot be canceled after the trip has commenced. Once you have embarked on your journey, cancellation, and refund options are typically no longer available.

2. Will I receive a full refund if I cancel my travel insurance? The refund amount will depend on the terms and conditions of your policy. Some policies offer full refunds within a specified “free look” period, while others may have deductions for administrative fees or prorate the refund based on the time elapsed.

3. Can I cancel travel insurance if I change my travel plans? Yes, you can cancel travel insurance if you change your travel plans. However, refund eligibility and potential fees will depend on your policy and the specific terms set by your insurance provider.

4. What is a “free look” period in travel insurance? A “free look” period is a specific duration, typically a few days after purchasing the policy, during which you can review the coverage in detail. If you decide to cancel within this period, you may be eligible for a full refund.

5. Is it possible to transfer my travel insurance policy to someone else? Some insurance providers allow policy transfers to another person who will be undertaking the trip. However, this is subject to the terms and conditions of your specific policy, so contact your insurance provider for more information.

Regarding the " Flight Delay Benefit" part, the Travel Insurance defines it as:

"departure of the Air Carrier’s flight in which the Insured had arranged to travel is delayed for at least twelve (12) consecutive hours at any single location from the time specified in the travel itinerary supplied to the Insured due to:

(iii) equipment failure of the aircraft on which the Insured is scheduled to travel;"

"The Company will reimburse the Insured per twelve (12)-hour delay up to the Benefit amount stated in the Policy Schedule subject to the terms and conditions of this Policy for:

(i) any prepaid, unused, non-refundable land or water accommodations;"

I was just thinking that technically, my flight has been delayed due to the aircraft problem. I'm asking because I would like to be reimbursed for the hotel accommodation I made for the day that I will be missing due to the flight change. Thank you!

' class=

It seems to include equipment failure which to me is the same as aircraft failure and you have said what it includes. I suggest you contact the insurer.

GUIDE: How to rebook or refund flights on PAL, Cebu Pacific, AirAsia & more

By Kara Santos Published Jan 03, 2023 4:48 pm

Thousands of travelers in the Philippines were left stranded at the start of 2023 as a technical glitch caused flights to be diverted, canceled, and delayed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and other Philippine airports.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on New Year’s Day said that nearly 300 flights to and from Manila and an estimated 56,000 passengers were affected due to technical issues in the air traffic management system.

As of Jan. 3, 2023, flights have already started to normalize. However, it may take some time to fully restore the normal schedules due to the backlog of delayed flights.

The Air Passenger Bill of Rights mandates that passengers may refund their fares should their flights be affected by force majeure or by unprecedented events such as infrastructure failure.

While this incident is beyond the air carrier’s control, several airlines have given travelers the option for free rebooking, availing of a travel fund, or getting a refund.

With revenge travel back in full swing this 2023, canceled flights and delays are inevitable in the future. Here’s how you can rebook or refund flights on airlines commonly used to and from the Philippines.

Philippine Air Lines (PAL)

PAL advises travelers to check the status of their flights before proceeding to the airport. In case a flight is canceled, travelers have the following rebooking options to manage their bookings on the airline's  website:

  • Convert your ticket to Travel Credits equivalent to the unused base fare of your ticket. Voucher validity is one year (1) from the date of issuance.
  • Rebook or Reroute your ticket to another flight with available space within 60 days from the original flight in the same booking class or higher within the same cabin class. Fare difference may apply.
  • Refund ticket without penalties, excluding Ticketing Service Charge. Travelers may contact PAL via the MyPAL Hub Request .
  • In the event of involuntary flight changes to rebook you on another date, use the Self Re-accommodation option. Rebooking fees and fare differences are waived.

For travels affected by schedule changes, cancellations and travel bans, there should be no rebooking fee and no fare difference for completed travels in the same booking class within 60 days from the affected flight date.

Cebu Pacific

Cebu Pacific is currently working on the recovery of its network and normalizing its operations. A list of canceled flights can be viewed here . Following the New Year's day fiasco, the budget airline discourages passengers from going to the airport and advises travelers to monitor the status of their flights online.

Affected passengers have been informed and provided with options (free rebooking, travel fund, refund) through the Manage Booking portal on the Cebu Pacific website.

For flights until 11:59 p.m. of January 3, 2023, passengers may voluntarily postpone their travel and avail of their options (free rebooking or travel fund) on the Cebu Pacific website.

  • Free Rebooking: Rebooking without fare difference is available for travel up to thirty (30) days from original flight date. The fare difference will apply if travel period is beyond thirty (30) days from the original flight date.
  • Travel Fund: Store the amount in a virtual CEB wallet valid for six (6) months and use this to either book a new flight or pay for add-ons (example: baggage allowance, seat selection, etc.)
  • Refund: The process may take up to two months from the date of request.

Take note that available seats for immediate travel are limited due to the peak travel period.

AirAsia

Likewise, AirAsia is working with airport authorities to ensure convenience among guests in all of their airport operations pending complete resolution of the technical concerns. Travelers on AirAsia can check their flight status online before proceeding to the airport.

Affected travelers may opt to avail of credit account, move their flight or refund options should they wish to make adjustments in their planned trips through the airasia SuperApp .

Cathay Pacific

Travelers who booked flights through Cathay Pacific can manage their booking via the airline’s website, mobile app or through Customer Care. The fastest way to make changes is to log into Manage Booking and rebook flights by clicking the “ Rebook and refund ” button.

Passengers under the same booking are required to change dates and/or flights together when changing flight bookings online. If the itinerary involves connecting flights with other carriers, travelers will also be able to make changes to the rest of the booking.

Singapore Air

Customers who booked flights directly with Singapore Airlines may change their travel dates online. In most circumstances, simply log in to Manage Booking and select your new flights.

In case you have already commenced your travel and/or one of your flights is waitlisted, you can also make use of their Help Form instead.

In the event of a flight cancellation, international border closures, if you test positive for Covid-19 and are unable to travel, or cases of other flight changes due to unforeseen circumstances, Singapore Air has an Assistance Request Form that can be used to seek a refund of the unused portion of a ticket.

Those flying via Emirates can easily edit and make changes to their flights online via the Manage Bookings section of the website.

There should be no change fees when you rebook within the validity of the ticket so you have more flexibility to plan ahead. However, there may be a difference in the fare or tax if you choose to change the date or the destination.

How to make sure you’re eligible for flight rebooking or refunds

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has said it is investigating the cause of the New Year flight incident and that it has requested the government to upgrade the country's outdated air traffic management system which was inaugurated in 2018.

It pays to know your rights as air passengers.

Before booking any flight, make sure to read the fine print as well. Different airlines list the "conditions of carriage" for passengers and baggage which contains important rules and provisions like check-in deadlines, refund procedures and the airline’s responsibility (or lack thereof) for delayed or canceled flights.

Each airline may have its own specific rules regarding cancellations, refunds and liability limitations. You can check yours on the links below.

  • Philippine Air Lines - Conditions of Carriage
  • Cebu Pacific - Conditions of Carriage
  • AirAsia - Conditions of Carriage
  • Cathay Pacific - Conditions of Carriage
  • Singapore Air - Conditions of Carriage
  • Emirates - Conditions of Carriage

Travel tips in the case of delayed or canceled flights

  • Monitor your flight status before going to the airport. It will be easier to make new arrangements from your home or hotel than to be trapped at the airport.
  • Sign up for airlines' free text alerts on the status of flights when you buy your ticket.
  • Make sure to download your carrier's app or bookmark the manage booking sections of the carrier's websites before your flight.
  • Have all your flight details on hand, as well as airline hotline numbers, for easier retrieval and rebooking if needed.
  • Food at the airport is very expensive. Bring a snack pack with you for the airport, a tumbler for refilling drinking water, and extra cash on hand for additional expenses while in transit.
  • It pays to have WiFi, a powerbank, and a charger in your hand-carry in case your flight gets delayed and you need to go online or call the airline’s hotlines. Do not rely on airport WiFi or expect that there will be enough charging stations, especially during peak travel seasons like holidays.

Verizon Wireless class action settlement deadline is approaching. Here's how to join

The deadline to sign up for a class action settlement with Verizon Wireless is Monday.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit against the wireless carrier, filed in New Jersey, that alleged that the company charged administration fees in a "deceptive and unfair manner."

Verizon denied wrongdoing as a part of the settlement, and the settlement website says the company will continue to charge the fees and has every right to increase them.

"Verizon clearly identifies and describes its wireless consumer Admin Charge multiple times during the sales transaction, as well as in its marketing, contracts and billing," Verizon spokesperson Rich Young said in a statement to USA TODAY. "This charge helps our company recover certain regulatory compliance, and network-related costs."

How much can a person receive if they join the settlement?

Eligible members of the class can qualify for up to $100 each. The final amount each customer will receive depends on how long they've been a customer.

Current and former customers with wireless or data services that were charged administrative fees between Jan. 1, 2016, to Nov. 8, 2023, are eligible.

Those who opt into the lawsuit cannot sue Verizon over the issue in the future.

How to sign up for the Verizon class action settlement

Qualifying customers must either file a  claim  through the settlement website or fill out and mail in a claim  form by April 15 to receive a settlement payment.

Those who don't file a claim will lose any rights to sue Verizon over these issues and also be legally bound by all orders and judgments the court makes on the lawsuit.

If you'd like to opt-out of the lawsuit, you must mail a signed request for exclusion to: Verizon Administrative Charge Settlement Administrator, Attn: Exclusions, P.O. Box 58220, Philadelphia, PA 19102, by Feb. 20, 2024.
