Michigan spring football game takeaways: Can Davis Warren beat out Alex Orji at QB?

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN - APRIL 20: Alex Orji #10 of the Michigan Wolverines prepares to take the sna during the Spring Football Game at Michigan Stadium on April 20, 2024 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Aaron J. Thornton/Getty Images)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Members of Michigan ’s national championship team walked away from Saturday’s spring game with four championship rings and, in the case of Jim Harbaugh, some fresh ink to commemorate Michigan’s 15-0 season.

Members of the 2024 team, meanwhile, walked away with a reminder of how far they have to go to reach those heights, particularly on offense. Fortunately, there’s a long runway between now and Sept. 7, when Texas will come to Michigan Stadium for a “Big Noon” game on Fox that will be one of the first must-see matchups of the 2024 season.

“That’s something coach Harbaugh talked about a lot, preparing the plane for takeoff,” quarterback Alex Orji said. “You’re going to start on the ground. You’re not going to levitate up. It’s not really a helicopter of an offense — it’s an airplane.”

Based on Saturday’s scrimmage, there could be a few bumps on takeoff. Here are five thoughts from the Maize team’s 17-7 victory.

Don’t forget about Warren

Orji got most of the buzz this spring as the player staking a claim to the starting quarterback job. Davis Warren has been around the longest of any quarterback on Michigan’s roster, and it’s easy to pigeonhole him as the steady-handed backup who isn’t quite a Big Ten starter.

Could Warren be more than that? He stated his case Saturday by throwing touchdown passes of 48 and 42 yards in the fourth quarter. The first was a rainbow to Kendrick Bell , who slipped behind the defense and cradled the ball in the end zone. On the next series, Warren threw on the run and hit Fredrick Moore in stride as Moore angled across the field and won a footrace to the pylon with DJ Waller.

On a blustery afternoon without many passing highlights, Warren made the three best throws of the day: the two touchdowns and a 35-yard strike to tight end Deakon Tonielli in the first quarter. Warren has played well in spring games during his career, but he was always behind J.J. McCarthy and, going back to 2021, Cade McNamara . Those throws mean more now that Michigan’s quarterback job is up for grabs.

“I think I’ve proven to myself and proven to these guys that I’m capable of being the starting quarterback here,” Warren said. “It’s obviously going to take a lot more work. We’ve got a big summer ahead of us, a big fall. The standard is set.”

Resetting the QB hierarchy

With no designed quarterback runs or live hits, Orji didn’t have a chance to show the full range of what he can do, though he offered a glimpse on the Blue team’s opening drive with an 18-yard scramble for a touchdown. Orji missed a few throws but was accurate on most of his short passes, going 13-of-18 passes for 103 yards. He’s confident he can push the ball down the field, even if he hasn’t had the chance to show it in a live setting.

“Everything comes with reps,” Orji said. “(I’m) just getting comfortable with doing certain things, working on the short, the intermediate, the deep.”

Orji and Warren, the starters for their respective teams, appear to be separating from Jadyn Davis and Jayden Denegal , the second quarterbacks for each squad. Davis, one of the headliners of Michigan’s 2024 recruiting class, didn’t take as many first-string reps as the other quarterbacks, a sign that Michigan isn’t rushing him into a competition before he’s ready. After a rough start to the spring, Denegal played better in subsequent practices but didn’t do a lot Saturday to make up ground, going 2-for-6 passing with an interception.

The wild card is Jack Tuttle , who threw a bit this spring but wasn’t in pads for Saturday’s scrimmage. Tuttle should be cleared to participate in the summer, offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell said. Michigan will continue evaluating the options until someone rises to the top.

“If a guy emerges, we’re going to roll with that,” Campbell said. “If a guy doesn’t, we’ve got to push somebody to get that done.”

O-line grade: incomplete

Michigan was even more short-handed than expected on the offensive line, as Northwestern transfer Josh Priebe sat out the scrimmage alongside left tackle Myles Hinton and guard Giovanni El-Hadi .

“(Priebe) got a little bit banged up, cut his lip at the end of spring,” Campbell said. “Nothing major at all. I would have loved to see him out there today. That guy’s a warrior. Gio El-Hadi wasn’t out there. That’s another guy who’s going to be a big part of our offensive line.”

Greg Crippen played snaps at center while sporting a cast on his left hand. Raheem Anderson , Amir Herring and Dominick Giudice were among the players who saw time on the interior, and Michigan had two young players at left tackle in freshman Blake Frazier and sophomore Evan Link . Frazier is noticeably slender at 6-feet-6 and 275 pounds but had some nice reps in his Michigan debut.

DB battle continues

DJ Waller and Jyaire Hill each had their moments at cornerback. On one play, Davis rolled out and lobbed a pass down the sideline for Peyton O’Leary , who was close to making the catch before Hill got his hand on the ball at the last moment. Waller’s big play was an interception on a pass Denegal forced into coverage, though Waller lost the ball at the end of his return.

Waller is a big, physical corner who strikes an imposing figure on the field at 6-3 and 205 pounds. At 6-2 and 181, Hill is more of a “technician,” in the words of receiver Fredrick Moore. Each player brings something distinct, and the ability to create different matchups should be one of Michigan’s strengths.

“The DB room is pretty athletic,” Moore said. “You see a different flavor of everybody every day at practice. You don’t know what to expect.”

Players who stood out

Michigan is hoping Moore can emerge as a third wide receiver, and he took a step in that direction with four catches for 76 yards. He’s an explosive athlete with the ball in his hands, but in terms of size and strength in the receiving corps, there’s a noticeable difference from last season, when Michigan had two veterans in Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson .

“I’ve been in the weight room a lot, and I’ve been on my nutrition a lot,” said Moore, who’s listed at 6-1, 180. “My nutrition wasn’t that good. I was not eating much. Me having a high metabolism, when I eat, I just burn it off.”

Edge rusher TJ Guy , one of Michigan’s spring standouts, was credited with a sack on a play where he was in the backfield almost as soon as Davis caught the snap. Aymeric Koumba , a sophomore edge from France, looked noticeably bigger and stronger than the last time he was on the field. Two freshmen, edge Dominic Nichols and linebacker Cole Sullivan , made plays in the backfield, with Sullivan’s coming on fourth down.

“I think he blew up a guard on one play, made a couple tackles in the backfield,” Campbell said. “I know I’m an offensive coach, but that stuck to me.”

Donovan Edwards played only one series, but that was enough to show why Michigan believes he’s ready to shine as the No. 1 running back. The Blue team’s makeshift offensive line opened a few creases, and Edwards looked more confident and decisive on his five carries than he did throughout much of last season.

“I know it was short, but I thought he ran one of the hardest I’ve ever seen him run,” Campbell said. “I told him that at halftime. I was proud of him.”

5 Michigan football spring game takeaways: Davis Warren could push Alex Orji in QB battle

The Maize team defeated the Blue team 17-7 in the Michigan football spring game Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor.

Earlier in the morning, the defending national champion Wolverines celebrated their 2023 national championship as they unveiled their four new rings: one for the national title, one for the Rose Bowl, one for the Big Ten Championship and one for their third consecutive College Football Playoff berth.

No official stats were kept, but here are five takeaways from the public's first look at the 2024 U-M football team.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Quarterback questions continue as Warren, Orji battle

Alex Orji started for the Blue team with Jadyn Davis as his backup, while Davis Warren started for Maize and Jayden Denegal served as his backup. Seventh-year QB Jack Tuttle was not dressed for the game.

Orji moved the blue team down the field well on his first drive. His first two passes − one for Max Bredeson, one for Tyler Morris − were behind his intended receivers, but he'd settle down with a screen pass and then a curl on fourth down to Bredeson to keep the drive alive.

His best pass was a 12-yard out-route to Payton O'Leary from the left slot, then two plays later, Orji made his most athletic play of the drive as the play broke down and he scrambled out to his right and out-ran the defense for 18 yards and a touchdown. For what it's worth, he was wearing a white non-contact jersey, and it appeared as though a few defenders could have tackled him if they'd been allowed, however, it was ruled a touchdown.

Orji came back in for two possessions in the second half. On his first, he attempted one pass and moved well in the pocket to create a throwing lane, but overthrew his intended receiver by a good five feet to lead to a punt.

On the next, U-M attempted four straight runs and on fourth-and-1 from the 47, a handoff to Benjamin Hall got stuffed for a turnover on downs.

With the offensive line and skill position groups separated, it's hard to make any true assessments, but Orji didn't seem to do anything in particular to hurt his perception as the clubhouse leader for the job.

His unofficial stats: 11 of 17 passing for 95 yards and one rush for 18 yards and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, Warren moved the ball well for Maize. On his first drive he found Deakon Tonielli for a 35-yard gain on third-and-7 and later found Colston Loveland split out wide for a gain of 10; however on third-and-5 from the Blue 10, he connected with Kalel Mullings who was tackled for a loss and U-M had to settle for a field goal.

Warren would get two more possessions in the fourth quarter, which is when he made one of the plays of the game.

The Maize team had just crossed midfield and on first-and-10, Warren dropped back to pass as Kendrick Bell (younger brother of Ronnie Bell) ran a go-route straight past Joshua Nichols and caught a perfectly thrown deep ball 42 yards from Warren for the go-ahead score.

On his next possession, Maize was faced with a second-and-13 from midfield when Warren rolled right, kept his eyes down field and found Fredrick Moore on a check-down coming back across the formation, who then ran all the way across the field and out-ran the defenders for a 49-yard touchdown.

Unofficially, Warren finished completing 6 of 9 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Jayden Denegal had the final series of the first half and the first series of the second half. On his first possession, he connected on a 32-yard pass to Moore, though it likely would have been a sack if the defense was allowed to hit him. Maize settled for a field goal attempt, but it missed wide left.

His rough day continued on his next possession when he threw another near interception and a pass behind an attempted receiver on third and fourth downs inside Blue territory.

Davis was the backup and looked comfortable leading the offense, even if there wasn't much to show for it. Perhaps his best play was on fourth-and-7 late in the third quarter, when he extended a play by rolling to the right and lofting a ball downfield for Payton O'Leary who went up and over Hill along the sideline and nearly came down with the circus catch, but it was broken up at the last moment.

Donovan's got his swagger back

Earlier this spring, Donovan Edwards explained why he made the decision to come back to Ann Arbor for a senior season instead of opting to enter the NFL Draft.

The West Bloomfield product was honest as he reflected on a junior season where he said he lost his spark and tried to fight his way back through offseason surgery. He ran for 119 yards and two scores as the MVP of the national championship game, but even that didn't undo the first 14 games where he ran for just 393 yards on 113 carries (3.43 yards per rush) and three scores.

On Saturday, Edwards (Blue team) looked much more like the explosive ball carrier he showed to be as a sophomore. He took the first touch of the game through the A-gap for 11 yards, then two plays later ripped off another 11-yard rush off the left side of his line behind Blake Frazier and Amir Herring, then took his third run outside right for a gain of six and nearly broke it free but was tripped up from behind by Jyaire Hill.

Edwards was consistently falling forward, decisive with his cuts and generally looked more explosive, even on limited touches. Unofficially, Edwards ran four times for 32 yards, a good first showing, behind a make-shift line, from U-M's new lead back.

Tyler Morris looks like the No. 1 WR

It's always hard to say when the teams are split up, but Tyler Morris seemed to be the clear No. 1 option out wide in the passing game right now.

Morris, who dressed for the Blue squad, was targeted early and often from both Orji and Davis. After Orji's first pass to Morris was thrown behind him on an intermediate crosser, he was targeted the next play on a screen for a gain of six.

On the next possession, Morris caught a screen pass from Davis and took it eight yards for a first down, then he got a carry on the next play and appeared to pick up three yards on the end-around, but a penalty negated the play.

It was largely about the reserves in the second half, however Morris' early involvement wasn't an accident.

Young secondary shows promise

The task feels extremely tall to replace Mike Sainristil, a two-time captain and reigning All-American, at the nickel position this upcoming season.

It also felt like a tall task when U-M had to replace first-round pick Dax Hill after the 2021 season and that's when they uncovered the hidden gem that was Sainristil. If Saturday was any early indication, the Wolverines have two solid options at the position in Zeke Berry and Ja'Den McBurrows.

Berry made a nice play in run support to stop a Carlos Dunlap carry at the line of scrimmage to open the second quarter, then later on the drive he again came downhill around the edge to stuff short-yardage specialist Kalel Mullings short on a third-and-1 carry.

Near the end of the half, Denegal fumbled a snap and Berry was one of the nearest defenders with a chance to pounce on it. He let the quarterback go (as instructed) so he wasn't credited with any stop, but it's worth noting he was in position.

In the second half, another name who's been coming up a lot this spring, popped for the first time in DJ Waller. Denegal forced a pass on third down and Waller jumped the route, which he returned 10 yards but was subsequently hit from behind and he fumbled the ball back to the offense.

He would make up for it a handful of plays later when he stuffed Bryson Kuzdzal on a fourth-down rush.

Jyaire Hill also made a nice tackle from behind on Edwards and McBurrows added a couple of impressive stops in run support.

Young receivers shine late

It was a quiet day for the receiver for three quarters, then a couple of young prospects fighting to make a name for themselves popped.

First, it was Bell, who came from Kansas City as an athlete and began in the quarterback room but has since moved out wide. He hauled in a 42-yard deep ball from Warren late in the fourth quarter and did a good job of locating the ball and corraling the score.

Next was Moore, who served as a safety valve for Warren on the next series and used his athleticism to out-race the defense to the end zone. On a day when Colston Loveland and Semaj Morgan were protected by design and Morris showed some flash of his own, it was a welcomed sign for a pair of young pass catchers to show out.

Key takeaways from Michigan’s Spring Game

Michigan’s defense made this a low scoring afternoon.

The Michigan spring game has now come and gone, with the maize team defeating the blue team 17-7.

Here are key takeaways from the spring game.

Evaluating the quarterbacks

Four quarterbacks appeared in the spring game, with Alex Orji being the starter for the blue team and Davis Warren the starter for the maize team.

  • Alex Orji was 13-of-18 for 103 yards and rushed for 19 yards and a rushing touchdown
  • Davis Warren was 6-of-9 for 136 yards and two touchdowns
  • Jayden Denegal was 2-of-6 for 39 yards with one interception
  • Jadyn Davis was 2-of-4 for 20 yards

Orji showcased his speed and had some nice short and intermediate-timing throws. He also threw a couple of inaccurate balls that missed by a wide margin.

Denegal’s interception was a bad one. Scrambling to his right and throwing on the run, he threw it right to a waiting DJ Waller.

Jadyn Davis had good movement in the pocket. Albeit a small sample size, Davis looked like a natural with arguably the highest ceiling in the quarterback room.

Davis Warren had by far the best day as the only quarterback with passing touchdowns. Warren threw a nice deep ball to Kendrick Bell and hit Fredrick Moore on the money for another score.

Jack Tuttle, who head coach Sherrone Moore said was working through some things on the injury front, did not participate.

The spring game is just a small glimpse of how things are trending at every position, including the QB, but based on the output at quarterback during the spring game it seems like the competition is wide open and they’re far from deciding on QB1. Further, the fact Jack Tuttle didn’t play provided even less insight into things. Tuttle is the most experienced quarterback on Michigan’s roster, he was the backup last season, it would make logical sense for him to start the season out as QB1, but things are rarely that simple in football. Stay tuned.

The Year of the Don

Donovan Edwards rushed for 33 yards on five carries, and had speed and bounce to his game, and looked good in limited action. Edwards appears to have bulked up and has added weight and muscle to his frame. Edwards is the cut-and-dry RB1 this season and how good of a season he has will greatly influence the trajectory of Michigan’s offense this season.

Young receivers and tight ends step up

Fredrick Moore caught a deep ball from Jayden Denegal and then later hauled in a pass from Davis Warren and picked up plenty of yards after the catch for a touchdown. In all, Moore had two receptions for 76 yards and the score.

Kendrick Bell, the younger brother of former Michigan wideout Ronnie Bell, had a shining moment as well. Davis Warren let it rip and found Bell, who was running a go-route for a 42-yard touchdown. Bell had two receptions for 53 yards and the score.

Tight end Marlin Klein, who is in line to become TE2 this season, had four catches for 36 yards and showcased some good physicality. Then there’s true freshman Deakon Tonielli who had one reception for 35 yards including 23 yards after the catch. Tonielli looks tough, flashes decent speed, and has future H-Back written all over him.

Standout players on defense and first thoughts on Wink Martindale’s scheme

Michigan’s defense could carry the team this year, especially in the early going of the season while the offense tries to gel with so many new starters (quarterback, receiver, offensive line). A lot of players fared well defensively in the spring. Linebacker Ernest Hausmann had a nice tackle on Donovan Edwards on the first drive. DJ Waller hauled in an interception. Jyaire Hill had a good pass breakup on a sideline deep ball by Jadyn Davis. Zeke Berry and Ja’Den McBurrows made solid plays in pass coverage. Five players had sacks on the day including TJ Guy, Jimmy Rolder, Kechaun Bennett, Cameron Brandt, and Hayden Moore. The defenses tallied 13 tackles for loss on the day, a very impressive number to say the least.

From a defensive schematics standpoint, things don’t appear to be all that different with Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator. There was a perception that Michigan would blitz a lot more with Martindale at the helm, but the unit seemed to have balance and wasn’t overly aggressive dialing up pressure throughout the day. However, this was a glorified practice and the play calls were purposefully vanilla to not give away much of their playbook to opposing teams.

Mixed results at kicker

Michigan fans were spoiled having a generational talent like Jake Moody kick for the Wolverines. James Turner stepped up admirably last season overall, but now it’s Adam Samaha who will be relied upon. Samaha had mixed results on Saturday. Samaha shanked his first attempt, missing by a wide margin to the left from just 30 yards out. However, he would bounce back and nail his other attempt, a try from 31 yards.

Michigan spring game: QB Davis Warren flashes arm in Maize win

  • Published: Apr. 20, 2024, 2:04 p.m.

alex warren tour michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The public’s first look at the Sherrone Moore-coached Michigan football team went about as you’d expect.

A defense that returns five starters looked miles ahead of an offense still in progress, evident by the final score of Saturday’s spring game, a 17-7 win for the Maize team.

Davis Warren was the star quarterback for the Maize, throwing a pair of deep touchdown passes in the second half to lead his team to victory. Sophomore receiver Kendrick Bell caught the first, while sophomore Fredrick Moore — who flashed his breakaway speed, marching toward the end zone — helped put the game away.

The Blue team’s lone score came on an 18-yard run by quarterback Alex Orji , who flashed his play-making ability on a broken play inside the red zone. Quarterbacks were off limits when it came to hitting, but Orji — listed at 6-foot-3, 236 pounds — showed promise in a position battle with no clear frontrunner.

Orji’s first pass sailed behind an open Tyler Morris over the middle field, and he let a deep ball in the fourth quarter sail high, but he made up for it later in the first quarter with an intermediate completion to Peyton O’Leary. Individual player stats were not kept.

Donovan Edwards , Michigan’s projected starting running back, had a series of explosive runs early before exiting.

Largely, though, both offenses had trouble moving the football amid cold, windy conditions at Michigan Stadium, where a modest crowd turned out for the culmination of the Wolverines’ spring practice schedule.

Coordinators Don “Wink” Martindale (Blue) and Kirk Campbell (Maize) both served as coaches, while Moore, the first-year head coach, looked on from field level.

Other notes:

• Along the offensive line, Greg Crippen and Dominick Giudice saw a lot of run at center as part of a pair of constantly rotating offensive lines. Nathan Efobi saw extended playing time at guard, as did Tristan Bounds , while freshman Evan Link — a name we heard a ton about this spring — was a regular at tackle.

Myles Hinton , the projected starter at left tackle, only played limited snaps while guard Josh Priebe , the transfer from Northwestern, did not play.

• The Blue defense was without all-Big Ten defensive tackle Mason Graham , who was spotted on the sideline in street clothes and did not play.

• Freshman quarterback Jadyn Davis , expected to redshirt this fall, was the first quarterback off the bench for the Blue team. He made a couple of deep throws, including one down the far sideline that was perfectly placed above the defensive back and nearly caught before wideout Peyton O’Leary had it knocked away.

• Quarterback Jack Tuttle , back for his seventh season, did not play. He’s been banged up most of spring and limited in practice, leaving his availability for the fall unknown.

• Sophomore DJ Waller Jr. , in the running to start at cornerback opposite Will Johnson this fall, came up with the first turnover of the game when he intercepted a Jayden Denegal pass in the third quarter. Waller had the ball stripped from his grasp and fumbled upon the return, but the Blue team recovered.

• Kicker Adam Samaha , presumed to be the team’s leading field-goal and extra-point specialist, had a mixed day. He successfully converted a 31-yard field goal into the wind but later missed on a 30-yard attempt.

• Tommy Doman handled punting duties for both teams, and appeared to shank a kick in the second quarter, as did returning longsnapper Greg Tarr .
