It won’t be wrong to say that the Konda Reddy Fort is the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about Kurnool. It is the remnant of the ancient fortification built around Kurnool, a place that served as a base for the Vijayanagara rulers. It is present in the heart of the city and you can easily find transport options from the local railway station and intercity bus stands. The citadel of the fort was recently renovated and instantly became famous for youth and couples to hang out.

Konda Reddy Fort mainly served as an observation tower for the soldiers and has three levels.

The lowest level is for the visitors while the second and third levels were used for observation. The monument is named after Konda Reddy, the last ruler of Alampur, who was imprisoned in this very same fort but managed to escape using the hidden tunnels. Though these tunnels are closed now, tourists can explore the different levels and enjoy a scenic view of the city from the top. 4 – Yaganti Temple

This pilgrimage site is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati and is also popular by the name Uma Maheshwara temple. 7 – Mantralayam

Mantralayam is a religious town that shares its borders with Karnataka state. This is one of the major Kurnool places to visit and several people come here in search of peace and tranquility. 8 – Mahanandi

Mahanandi attracts a lot of people every year for various reasons. Some come here to seek blessings from the Mahanandi temple while others want to explore the beauty of the Nallamalla hills. The Mahanandi temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has nine shrines of the Lord where you can see him in his nine different forms. The main sanctum sanctorum has a Shiva lingam and this is the Mahanandiswara form of the deity. Adjacent to the Shiva temple, there is Kameswari temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. 9 – Belum Caves

You cannot complete your Kurnool trip without paying a visit to the Belum caves. This is the second largest cave formation in the country and was formed over thousands of years because of the underground flow of the extinct Chitravati River. The deepest point of the cave is at ‘Paatalaganga’ and some also believe this to be the gateway to hell! The cave system has long passages which get narrow at some points, galleries, caverns, and freshwater pools. 3.5 km of the cave has been discovered so far but visitors are only allowed to go up to 1.5km inside.

The cave is known for deposits of black limestone and you will also find quartz in places. There is one main entrance from where tourists enter the cave but otherwise, there are 15 more entrances excluding the main one. The Andhra Pradesh government deemed Belum caves a national treasure and declared these as ‘protected monuments’. Belum caves are about 100 km away from Kurnool so consider covering the place after exploring the other Kurnool tourist places.

Although the town was inhabited for thousands of years, the city per se was not established until the 16th century. The earliest settlement of modern Kurnool dates back to the 11th century, when it was ruled by the Cholas, and later by the Kakatiya dynasty, the Vijayanagara Empire, Mughals, Nawabs, and finally by the British East India Company, before India’s independence.

Located in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, Belum Caves are the largest and longest cave system in India still open for the tourists. The second largest caves in India after the Krem Liat Prah in Meghalaya and famous for their unique formations such as stalactite and stalagmite formations, the caves were formed over a period of millions of years with the consequent formation of limestone. Ahobilam Temple, dedicated to Lord Narasimha Swami, is the only temple where all the nine forms of the deity are worshipped. The temple was built according to the Vijayanagara style of architecture and houses idols of all the nine forms of Lord Narasimha Swami.

8. Shivaji Spoorthy Kendra, Kurnool

Shivaji Spoorthy Kendra is where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj meditated before becoming the king. The Kendra was built by historians Vadlamudi Ram Mohan Rao and Meero Panth Pingle when they had visited Srisailam and saw the dilapidated state of the location. The bhoomi pooja for the Kendra was done in 1983 and a 12 feet tall bronze statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was installed later on. The main motive of establishing the Kendra is to inspire the youth of India with the ideals of Shivaji Maharaj and keep his historic achievements alive.

9. Sri Mahayogi Laxmamma Avva Temple, Kurnool

Sri Mahayogi Laxmamma Avva Temple is dedicated to Lakshmamma, also known as Avva. She was born in a poor Dalit family, had nothing to live off of and was considered insane because she was always found muttering to herself. Some, however, believed in her powers and offered her food and clothing till she was alive. According to a legend, Avva's limbs were mutilated but the next day she was seen doing her regular chores. Many such miracles stunned the people around and ever since she has been considered an avadhoot.

Ranamandala Konda is a religiously important attraction in the region. It is believed, this site is where, during their exile, Lord Rama shot an arrow and formed a lake to provide water to Goddess Sita. The attraction also has the famous Ranamandala Anjaneya Swamy temple which is a shrine with no roof.

Adoni Fort is a 15th century historic monument built during the reign of the Vijayanagara Dynasty. The fort served as a military base and its walls stretch over 50 kilometres in length making it the largest fort in the country. After the downfall of the Vijayanagara empire, the fort was possessed by the Bijapur Sultanate and later, after the defeat of Tipu Sultan, came under the British Reign.
