cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Why You Shouldn't Worry About Your Cruise Ship Tipping Over On Your Next Voyage

I f you think about it, cruise ships are the result of meticulous engineering and design. They're constructed to accommodate thousands of passengers, all while traversing through seas and oceans for extended periods, typically spanning days and weeks. They remain stable and upright despite the rough waves — a testament to how they were built with safety and stability in mind. If it's your first time hopping aboard a cruise ship , feeling anxious about your safety is understandable. You might harbor worry about feeling seasick, falling overboard, or the vessel itself tipping over.

Although rare, cruise ships can "technically" tip over. But will they? Highly unlikely. According to Harry Bolton, retired captain at the California Maritime Academy, a cruise ship could hypothetically tip if it were in "extreme weather," "positioned sideways," and rolled over by a 70 to 100-foot wave. "I guarantee you're never going to be in those kinds of waves anyway," he told CNN . "[Cruise ships] avoid bad weather like the plague. They don't want the passengers in peril, they don't want to risk any injury or accidents."

If a cruise ship potentially capsizing is what's holding you back from enjoying a cruise, it's important to understand that modern ships are built with the strongest materials and are designed to have a "low center of gravity," as noted by Reader's Digest . They also undergo meticulous testing and inspection before receiving the green light to embark on voyages.

Cruise Ships Are Designed With Safety In Mind

A lot goes into building a single cruise ship — and by a lot, we mean hundreds and thousands of parts, hundreds of subcontractors and suppliers, and 1.5 million hours of physical labor, as detailed by NerdWallet . These vessels are carefully put together piece by piece, with the entire process often spanning 12 to 18 months. Involved in that construction is proper gravity management, which helps cruise ships remain stable and refrain from tipping over.

As noted by Interesting Engineering , the heaviest parts of the ship — like the machinery and engine — are in the bottom levels to keep the center of gravity low, which "helps counterbalance the weight pulling the ship downwards, effectively preventing it from tipping over." Additionally, ships have ballast tanks located at the bottom that are packed with water and are adjusted accordingly to help contribute to the vessel's stability. They also have robust warning systems, so the crew can take action immediately if they're at risk of capsizing.

To give passengers peace of mind, the Cruise Lines International Association assured that ships are constantly checked and inspected by various parties, including the International Maritime Organization and port authorities, to guarantee that safety regulations are consistently followed. As a result, the organization declared that cruise ships are "one of the safest ways to travel" and are "safer than virtually every other form of travel."

Carnival cruise ship tilts hard to one side, terrifying passengers

November 2, 2018 / 6:59 AM EDT / CBS News

A Carnival cruise ship tipped to one side Sunday night, sending loose items sliding and falling all around and sparking panic among passengers, reports CBS New York . The station calls it a case of chaos on the high seas.

The Carnival Sunshine leaned mere hours after leaving Port Canaveral, Florida for the Caribbean.

The cruise line says a "technical issue" caused the bumpy start to the voyage.

Passenger Kyla Williams told CBS New York her husband had to hold her up so she wouldn't fall. "I was shifting, falling out of my seat," she said. "This was very much the ship rolling to one side and everything falling down from that, and it was something you'll never forget."

Passenger David Crews, of Long Island, New York told CBS Orlando affiliate WKMG-TV , "I didn't think anything of it, since it's not uncommon for ships to rock back and forth. But it didn't rock back. It kept leaning.

"Plates and silverware started sliding off the tables. Then the tables themselves started to slide. Glasses and plates started to fall and shatter. At this point, it was pure chaos. Screams. Cries. Panic."

Another passenger wrote on social media that water ran into elevators, and all her clothes were soaked by exploding cans falling from shelves.

"Get me off!!!!" the user exclaimed on Twitter.

Carnival says the boat leveled out after about a minute, then continued on its route.

Video from the ship shows employees trying to clean up the mess as passengers clutched at life jackets later that night.

The day after the incident, guests got a letter from the captain explaining what had happened and offering each person a $50 on-board credit "so you can enjoy something on us."

This is the letter guests received from @CarnivalCruise after their ship started to lean/tilt, causing all sorts of damage. pic.twitter.com/v5UNaM7LVA — Clay LePard (@ClayLePardNews6) October 31, 2018

The following day, a passenger wrote on social media "$50 credit is not enough. I did not sleep at all we got no explanation until this morning. My cruise is ruined. I cannot wait to get off this ship. I'm terrified."

CBS New York sent that passenger's complaint straight to the cruise line, which said in response, "We appreciated our guests understanding of this disruption and provided compensation as a gesture of goodwill."

The Carnival Sunshine is one of the oldest ships in Carnival's fleet. It was born as the Carnival Destiny in 1996, the world's largest cruise ship at the time, but was renamed after an extensive renovation several years later.

WKMG has learned some guests cut their trip short, preferring to fly home early when the ship docked after the incident in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

Norwegian Cruise Line ship tips at sea, several hurt; Brick woman recounts experience

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

A Norwegian Cruise Line ship on its way to Port Canaveral in Florida Sunday night caught an extreme wind gust and tipped to the left, injuring crew members and passengers.

Tweets from the company said some "unexpected weather" — a gust of wind estimated at 100 knots, or about 115 mph — just before midnight on March 3 caused the ship called Norwegian Escape to heel to the left.

Brick resident Sandy Chichester Grebel was on the ship with her boyfriend, Howard Kleinman, when the ship tipped. She said she heard the wind and then felt the boat move suddenly.

"The curtain actually lifted off of the floor and all of the items on our counters went flying toward the cabin door," Grebel told the Press via Facebook messenger.

The wind blasted the Norwegian Escape, which left from New York City on Sunday. The ship arrived at Port Canaveral Tuesday morning, according to reports.

Several injuries were reported, but were treated by the ship's medical staff, the tweets said. There was no damage to the ship itself and "she remains fully operational and continues her scheduled itinerary," according to the company.

Grebel said the tip lasted 15 to 20 minutes, and the captain came on the speaker almost immediately assuring passengers. She said they stayed in their room waiting for directions, but got dressed in case it became more difficult to move.

"I was terrified," Grebel said, adding that she was crying and her boyfriend was afraid only half the lifeboats would be viable, given the ship's angle. "At the time everyone was shaken."

Some people had broken computers and electronics, some people fell and some slept through it, Grebel said. But everything was calm and back to normal on Monday, she said.

"The crew was fabulous and acted swiftly," she said.

'Pure Chaos' Erupts on Cruise Ship When Technical Issue Makes Boat Roll to Side for 1 Minute

A dream vacation turned into a nightmare for passengers on a Carnival Cruise Sunday night

A dream vacation turned into a nightmare for passengers on a Carnival Cruise on Sunday night.

According to CBS New York , a malfunctioning switchboard caused the Carnival Sunshine ship to tip onto its side shortly after the week-long journey began in Port Canaveral, Florida.

“I was shifting, falling out of my seat,” a passenger named Kyla Williams told the outlet. “This was very much the ship rolling to one side and everything falling down from that, and it was something you’ll never forget.”

She also said her husband had to hold her up so she wouldn’t fall.

Another passenger, David Crews, told CBS Orlando affiliate WKMG-TV that he initially “didn’t think anything of it, since it’s not uncommon for ships to rock back and forth.”

“But it didn’t rock back,” he continued. “It kept leaning. Plates and silverware started sliding off the tables. Then the tables themselves started to slide. Glasses and plates started to fall and shatter. At this point, it was pure chaos. Screams. Cries. Panic.”

Crews also shared several pictures of the incident, which showed an array of dishes and other supplies crashing to the floor.

According to a statement from Carnival obtained by PEOPLE, the boat reportedly leveled out after about a minute and then proceeded as usual.

“There was never any issue with the safe operation of the ship, and our officers quickly intervened to correct the situation,” the statement read.

One passenger tweeted, “Get me off this ship Carnival Sunshine. We just listed so bad that I am not comfortable being in this [ship] anymore. Water ran out [of] the pools glasses shattered in my room and drink spilled in my suitcase!”

A few days later, as an apology, guests received $50 on-board credit, but many still opted to leave the ship early.

Cruise ship stranded in 2019 narrowly avoided disaster, report says

A cruise ship that lost power during a storm off the coast of Norway and nearly ran aground in 2019 avoided becoming "one of the worst disasters at sea in modern times," according to a new report looking into the blackout .

The Viking Sky was carrying 1,374 passengers when it lost power and became stranded in a notoriously rough stretch of water in the Norwegian Sea. The ship came close to crashing into Norway's rocky coast, and hundreds of people were evacuated over the course of several hours.

The blackout meant the ship could not move forward or be steered, according to the report from the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority. The accident was caused by insufficient lubricating oil in all of the operating diesel generators' lubricating oil sump tanks, the agency said, which combined with rough waters meant the ship could not operate.

The investigation found that one of the vessel's four diesel generators was "unavailable" when it left port, the agency said, meaning that the cruise ship was not in compliance with safety standards and should have never sailed. The design of the sump tank on the working generators was also "non-compliant with applicable regulations," the investigation found.

The agency's investigation "identified operational, technical, and organisational safety issues that in different ways contributed to the blackout" and called for more than a dozen safety recommendations.

Once at sea, the agency said one of the biggest problems was that the ship's crew had never practiced the protocol for how to recover from a full blackout without a standby generator. This meant that engineers "were not practised in managing" the situation.

"The situation was stressful, the control system was complex, and a specific sequence of actions was needed. Insufficient training likely contributed to why the blackout recovery was time consuming," the agency said.

Several of the safety recommendations focused on ensuring that various shipyards, ship managers and other organizations that oversaw the Viking Sky review and strengthen processes to ensure that materials are compliant with safety regulations, and to ensure that no other vessels are sailing with faulty machinery. Other safety recommendations suggested that new technology be developed to better measure lubricating oil "to ensure safe operation" of large vessels, and that the ship management company and cruise line operator review their engine room alarm system to identify and implement potential improvements.

The 7 Most Exciting New Cruise Ships of 2019

Gene Sloan

Are you experiencing post- Symphony of the Seas letdown? For at least some big-ship cruise fans, it's a real thing.

The arrival of the insanely-large, activity-packed Royal Caribbean vessel — at 228,081 tons, the biggest cruise vessel ever — was the big cruise story of 2018, and no doubt about it, there's nothing coming this year that quite measures up.

Still, we're here to tell you all is not lost if you're a devotee of big new ships. Three of the most popular big-ship lines (Carnival, Norwegian and Princess) have significant new vessels debuting this year. There are also several innovative new ships coming from lines specializing in smaller vessels. In fact, it's what's coming at the smaller end of the spectrum that has us the most excited.

Here, a list of the seven new ships arriving in 2019 that we're most itching to book.

MS Roald Amundsen

Maiden Voyage: May 17

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

You may have never heard of Hurtigruten, the Norway-based cruise and ferry operator that soon will unveil the 530-passenger Roald Amundsen. But the company has a long and storied history in polar travel, and this unusual new ship is destined to make waves in the fast-growing niche of adventurous "expedition" cruising to such polar destinations as Antarctica and the Arctic's Northwest Passage. Named after the famous Norwegian explorer who was first to the South Pole, Roald Amundsen will, notably, be the cruise industry's first vessel to run on electric hybrid engines. This not only will save fuel but also allow for silent operation in sensitive areas where silence can make all the difference (near a penguin rookery, for instance, or a calving glacier). Other unusual features include a full-blown science center with state-of-the-art gadgets and underwater drones for passenger use. Fares start at $2,717 per person for an eight-night repositioning voyage.

Celebrity Flora

Maiden Voyage: May 26

It isn't often that a new ship debuts in the Galápagos, which is why we're so jazzed about the arrival of Celebrity Flora. Built specifically to sail in the famously wildlife-rich archipelago, the stylish, yacht-like Celebrity Cruises vessel will feature wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows in most spaces to maximize nature viewing; something you just don't see with other Galápagos ships. It'll also have the most expansive accommodations in the destination, including suites over 1,000 square feet. Celebrity is known for big ships, of course. But this one will carry just 100 passengers, the maximum allowed in the Galápagos. Expect an intimate, boutique hotel-like experience, just one with ever-changing scenery. Amenities will include two restaurants, an indoor lounge, an outdoor lounge and a marina with an easy-on, easy-off tender boarding area.

Scenic Eclipse

Maiden Voyage: Aug. 15

Some things are worth waiting for, and we think that's the case for this super-swanky, 228-passenger "discovery yacht" under development for luxury purveyor Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours. Originally scheduled to debut in 2018, it's been delayed time and again due to problems at the shipyard where it's under construction — something to keep in mind when booking. But when it finally arrives, it should be a head-turner. Known for luxurious (if pricey) river cruises, Scenic is promising a go-anywhere "expedition" vessel with a groundbreaking level of luxury, including all-suite accommodations (and we're talking real suites, with separate living rooms), butler service for all and 10 onboard dining options including a sushi restaurant. Designed for exploring places like Antarctica in style, it'll sail not just with a fleet of Zodiacs but also two helicopters and a six-person submarine. Sounds epic, right? There's just one drawback: The cost. Rates for some voyages start at more than $1,000 per person, per day.

Information : 857-228-5807; scenicusa.com .

Sky Princess

Maiden Voyage: Oct. 20

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

The fourth vessel in Princess Cruises' Royal Class will offer many of the same features as its sisters, including an elegant, three-deck-high Piazza filled with cafes and eateries, a spacious pool deck and a giant spa. But the 3,660-passenger ship also will have a few innovative new twists that have us eager for a look-see, including what are being billed as two of the most spectacular suites on a mass-market vessel. Dubbed the Sky Suites, the sprawling, top-of-the-ship complexes will accommodate up to five people (a first for Princess) and offer stunning, 270-degree views from some of the biggest balconies at sea. Also new on Sky Princess will be an aft pool called Wakeview. (Read: more stunning sea views.) And the ship's adults-only Sanctuary will have a new design with more private cabanas. Sky Princess initially will cruise in the Mediterranean with week-long trips starting around $1,300 per person.

Information : 800-774-6237; princess.com .

Norwegian Encore

Maiden Voyage: Nov. 2

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Norwegian Cruise Line has given big-ship leader Royal Caribbean a run for its money in recent years with the rollout of three giant "Breakaway Plus-class" vessels full of everything a mega-resort lover could want and more. Now, it's ready for an even bigger "encore" performance with this 20-deck-high giant packed with eateries, bars, showrooms and over-the-top amusements. We're particularly excited to try Norwegian Encore's sprawling go-kart track, which will careen around two decks at the back of the ship. Yes, this is something Norwegian has done before, but never at this level. Nearly 1,150 feet long, it'll include four sections that extend over the sides of the vessel. Encore also will feature the Tony Award-winning show "Kinky Boots," an open-air laser tag arena and a virtual reality complex. It will initially operate seven-night voyages to the Eastern Caribbean out of Miami with fares starting around $800 per person.

Carnival Panorama

Maiden Voyage: Dec. 11

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Carnival fans living on the West Coast have been eagerly awaiting this ship for more than a year, and for good reason: It'll be the first new Carnival vessel based in the region in two decades. If you haven't noticed, cruise lines traditionally deploy their newest, hottest ships on the East Coast, so this is a big "get" for the West. Fifteen decks high with room for up to 5,097 people, it'll sail year-round to the Mexican Riviera out of Long Beach, California, becoming the ship-to-beat for inexpensive, lively, fun-focused cruises to the destination. Expect lots of bustling lounges, bars and restaurants, and all sorts of amusements, including an 800-foot-long pedal ride, a water slide-filled aqua park and a trampoline park — the latter is an industry first. Fares for week-long voyages start around $500 per person.

Flying Clipper

Maiden Voyage: Not yet announced

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Like Scenic Eclipse, the arrival of this vessel has been delayed so many times we've lost count, and it still doesn't have an official unveiling date. But if it comes together by the summer, as expected, it will be the cruise story of the year, hands-down — and trust us, you'll want to snag an early booking. The brainchild of Swedish entrepreneur Mikael Krafft, the owner of sailing-ship line Star Clippers, it will be a fully-rigged tall ship on a scale not seen in a century, and it's sure to become an instant icon of the cruise world. Being built to hold 300 passengers, with five masts and more than 39,000 square feet of sails, it's modeled on France II, a legendary vessel of the early 1900s. Itineraries and fares have yet to be set.

Carnival Horizon

Highlights:  The first in her class — soon to be followed by the  Magic  and the  Breeze  — the  Dream  introduced a new concept in the Ocean Plaza area, which featured music and a cafe with indoor/outdoor seating areas. The ship’s atrium is a stunner, stretching all the way up to a top-deck skylight. Another great feature: Deck five’s promenade, which circles the entire ship and features several hot tubs that are cantilevered over the edge!

FAQ: Where does Carnival Dream go? Carnival Dream currently sails from Galveston to the Caribbean. Does Carnival Dream have a casino? Yes, it does. Has Carnival Dream been refurbished? Yes, in 2022.

Fun Fact:  The  Dream  was the very first Carnival ship to be built with a top-deck water slide.

CHristmas tree carnival artium

Highlights:   Elation is one of the older Carnival ships which still manage to retain a sense of individuality. There are bursts of bright colors everywhere, and venues with completely unique design elements (such as the enormous Statue of Liberty head in the piano bar). When people say, “They don’t make ’em like that anymore” in reference to cruise ships, this is exactly the kind of ship they’re talking about. During a 2017 dry-dock, numerous oceanview staterooms were converted into the more in-demand balcony category.

FAQ: Is Carnival Elation still sailing? Yes, it is as of early 2023. Where is Carnival Elation? Carnival Elation currently sails from Jacksonville, Florida to the Bahamas. When was Carnival Elation last refurbished? Early 2023.

Fun Fact: Like her fellow Fantasy-class members, this ship was originally named,  Elation . In 2007, the decision was made to add the word “Carnival” to all of their names.

Carnival Freedom

CarnFree SanJuan1

  • Name:   Carnival Freedom
  • Inaugural Sailing:   March 14, 2007
  • Guest Count: 3,754
  • Godmother:  Supermodel Kathy Ireland
  • View Carnival Freedom Deck Plans
  • 2 Deluxe Captain’s Suites
  • 10 Grand Penthouse Suites
  • 6 Scenic Oceanview staterooms
  • 521 Balcony/Lanai staterooms
  • 334 Oceanview staterooms
  • 575 Interior staterooms

Highlights:  Fresh out of a dry-dock in early 2019, Freedom now offers a wide variety of venues and entertainment options that have long been staples on other Carnival ships. For example, a Bonsai Sushi Express was added, and the water park got a whole new look, including two water slides.

But one of our favorite things about sailing on older Carnival ships, is seeing familiar venues such as dance clubs and main dining rooms with unusual names, picked for the ship’s theme (something that no longer exists on new builds).

For instance, on this ship you have the Centuries Promenade, International Aft Lounge and Victoriana Main Show Lounge.

FAQ: Does Carnival Freedom have a casino? Yes, it does. When was Carnival Freedom last refurbished? 2019. Does Carnival Freedom have Guy’s Burger Joint? Yes!

Fun Fact: This was the first ship to replace Camp Carnival with Camp Ocean, the popular children’s program, as well as the first to introduce the Dr. Seuss-themed Bookville and its reading room.

Carnival Glory

Carnival Glory

  • Name: Carnival Glory
  • Size : 110,000-tons
  • Inaugural Sailing:  July 14, 2003
  • Guest Count: 3,756
  • Godmother:  Dr. Sally Ride, Astronaut
  • View Carnival Glory Deck Plans
  • 6 Scenic Oceanview cabins
  • 521 Balcony/Lanai cabins
  • 334 Oceanview cabins
  • 577 Interior cabins

Highlights:  Thanks to dry-docks, which saw changes both major and minor in 2012 and 2017, Glory has a whole lot of popular venues despite being more than 15 years old. But it also retains some of the things we love about the older ships, including four glass elevators. Another feature you won’t find on the newer ships is a band playing on the promenade at night, just outside the casino, bringing that entire area to life. One thing we’ll say about this ship: It definite has the mark of Joe Farcus, meaning you’ll find a whole lot of unique design touches, including some that border on Gothic.

FAQ: Does Carnival Glory have a casino? Yes, it does. Does Carnival Glory have a laundry room? Yes, it has self-service launderettes as well as laundry services. Does Carnival Glory have a RedFrog Pub? No, but it does have RedFrog Rum Bar.

Fun Fact: While the steakhouse on most Carnival ships is named Fahrenheit 555, here it’s known as The Emerald Room. It’s a bit less formal looking than some of the steakhouses found on newer ships, but reservations are still recommended. Don’t have one? You might still be able to get in… plus, the Emerald Room offers a bar where you can have a cocktail while you wait for a table to become available.

  • 752 interior staterooms
  • 20 oceanview & interior upper/lower staterooms
  • 25 modified for wheelchair users
  • 1,987 total guest staterooms

Highlights:  In many ways, Horizon is a virtual twin to the first-in-class Vista . Both offer the new Havana staterooms (including some with a cool lanai and even hammocks!), and both feature the thrilling SkyRide that allows you to essentially ride a bicycle while suspended some 140 feet above the sea.

The biggest difference between the two mega-ships? While Vista became the first ship to brew its own beer, Horizon upped the ante by combining ship-brewed beer with smoked meats to create the amazing venue that is Guy Fieri’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse/Brewhouse.

Carnival Horizon

FAQ: Does Carnival Horizon have laundry facilities? Yes, it has self-service launderettes as well as laundry services. Does Carnival Horizon have a gym? Yes! Does Carnival Horizon have a casino? Yes, it does.

  • 103 oceanview window
  • 213 interior cabins
  • 17 modified for wheelchair users
  • 1,062 total guest cabin

Highlights:  Another of the old-school Carnival ships, Legend dates back to a time when ships had themes… and this one is obvious. You don’t simply get a Lido Pool or casino, but rather venues with names like the Camelot and Avalon Pools, and the Club Merlin Casino. Of course, there are more modern “legends” aboard as well… and yes, we count Guy Fieri as a legend thanks to his incredible Burger Joint.

FAQ: Does Carnival Legend have Dive-In movies on an outdoor movie screen? No, it doesn’t. Does Carnival Legend have a casino? Yes!

Fun Fact: The ship’s maiden voyage was also Carnival’s first cruise in Europe, a three-night trip from Harwich to Amsterdam and back. This was also the first Carnival ship to offer specialty dining.

atrium carnival liberty

Highlights: Unlike today’s more homogeneous ships, this is yet another on which you’ll find unique details around every corner. The three-story atrium features an interesting combination of multi-colored lights and wrought iron, while the main dining room has white iron chandeliers that are reminiscent of the ballroom from Disney’s Beauty & The Beast .

The lights-and-ironwork combo recurs throughout, especially along the promenade. A nice feature of the pool deck is that it’s tiered, offering several levels of loungers. All of these have nice views of the pool, as opposed to a standard flat-plan where the majority of loungers are all on one level.

FAQ: Does Carnival Liberty have a basketball court? Yes, it does! Does Carnival Liberty have waterslides? Yes. Can you smoke on Carnival Liberty? Yes, but only in the casino and in the designated outdoor smoking areas.

Fun Fact:  This was the first Carnival ship to be outfitted with a Seaside Theater, which is now famous for the nightly poolside Dive-In Movies.

Carnival Luminosa

  • 6 Penthouse Suites
  • 632 Ocean View Balcony
  • 68 Ocean View without Balcony
  • 99 Ocean View Window
  • 213 Interior Cabins
  • 1,062 total staterooms

Highlights: Hearkening back to the traditional cruise ship architecture, Luminosa features a 10-story atrium topped with a glass ceiling. There’s also a pool deck with a sliding roof, one of Carnival’s largest Cloud 9 Spas, the Serenity adults-only sundeck, and Carnival’s popular Alchemy Bar.

FAQ: Does Carnival Luminosa have water slides? No, it doesn’t. Does Carnival Luminosa have Guy’s burgers? No. Does Carnival Luminosa have a laundry room? No, but laundry service is available.

Fun Fact: Carnival Luminosa, formerly Costa Luminosa, is kind of in a class of her own; her design is a hybrid of the Spirit class and the Vista class. She was christened with sister ship Costa Pacifica in 2009 — the first time two cruise ships were simultaneously christened in Italy.

Carnival Magic

CL MC Aerial 77

  • Name: Carnival Magic
  • Class:  Dream
  • Inaugural Sailing: May 1, 2011

  • View Carnival Magic Deck Plans
  • 44 oceanview balcony Junior Suites and Spa Suites
  • 35 modified for wheelchair users

Highlights: In some ways, the Carnival Magic represents a middle ground for the line’s ships. On the one hand, it features many of the things we now associate with Carnival — including venues like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint — yet it manages to feel old-fashioned and retain some of the intimacy that was once associated with cruising. It also bridges the gap between some of the more over-the-top ships (such as the Miracle ) and today’s vessels, which don’t really offer the individual themes that Carnival’s older ships once did.

FAQ: Does Carnival Magic have a roller coaster? No, it doesn’t. Does Carnival Magic have a movie theater? No, but you can watch movies on the outdoor Dive-In screen. Does Carnival Magic have a casino? Yes, it does!

Fun Fact:  During a typical week-long cruise, guests on the Carnival Magic consume upwards of 40,000 pastries.

miracle

Highlights: This might be the most unique of the remaining old-school Carnival ships. The work of longtime designer/entertainment architect Joe Farcus is unmistakable in venues like the Phantom Lounge and Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab, the two-story disco featuring a 15-foot tall version of the mad scientist’s creation. Unusual design elements abound whether in the practically hidden Gatsby’s Garden Promenade or the steakhouse which is essentially built into the famous whale-tail funnel (which is, by the way, another Farcus design).

FAQ: Does Carnival Miracle have a casino? Yes, it does! Does Carnival Miracle have Dive-In movies? No, it doesn’t. Does Carnival Miracle have a laundry room? Yes, there are self-service launderettes as well as laundry service.

Fun Fact:  Outside each stateroom is a larger-than-life picture of a famous fictional character.

Pig and Anchor BBQ

Highlights:  Truth be told, Carnival Panorama has been a bit overlooked thanks to her attention-hogging sister, Mardi Gras . After all, Mardi Gras is sort of a game-changer for Carnival, from her hull art to her top-deck roller coaster. But Panorama is deserving of a whole lot of attention in her own right. For one thing, the ship introduced a fleet-first in SkyZone, a multi-purpose trampoline park. It was also be the first Carnival ship to feature a culinary studio. This third Vista-class ship sails year-round out of Long Beach, California. Of course, the ship offers many of the favorites featured on her siblings, including Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse|Brewhouse, the SkyRide, and the Alchemy Bar.

FAQ: Does Carnival Panorama have an IMAX theater? No, it doesn’t. Does Carnival Panorama have single rooms? Unfortunately, no. Does Carnival Panorama have a casino? Yes, it does.

FAQ: Does Carnival Paradise have a movie screen? No, it doesn’t. Does Carnival Paradise have a casino? Yes, it does! Does Carnival Paradise have a basketball court? No

Fun Fact: Carnival Paradise was launched at the world’s first non-smoking cruise ship. It was so anti-smoke that even the crew members were not allowed to smoke. On top of that, if you were caught smoking on the ship you were fined $250 and sent home from the next port of call. Carnival discontinued the smoke-free policy in 2003.

Highlights: This midsize ship underwent a renovation in early 2019 which mostly involved sprucing things up. At that time, the chapel and library were removed and an area known as “The Cove” was added. This is largely used in conjunction with Carnival’s newly-formed partnership with Michael’s, meaning it’s where a lot of family-friendly crafting events are held. You’ll find some of Carnival’s newer offerings — like Guy’s Burger Joint and Bonsai Sushi — on board, but the ship also managed to maintain some of its old-world charm in venues such as the Normandie Dining Room.

FAQ: Does Carnival Pride have laundry facilities? Yes, there are self-serve launderettes as well as laundry service.

Fun Fact:  Pride  was the first ship to do year-round sailings out of Baltimore, Maryland’s port.

Highlights: If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind ship, this one might qualify… if for no other reason than she is the only one in her class! That’s because Splendor was originally ordered and built for Costa Cruises, but at some point during construction, the decision was made to transfer her to their sister line, Carnival.

Carnival Splendor currently sails year-round out of Sydney, Australia.

FAQ: What currency is used on Carnival Splendor? Australian dollars. Does Carnival Splendor have a casino? Yes, it does.

Fun Fact:  When the ship relocated from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Long Beach, California in 2009, the trip actually took 49 days. Why? Because Splendor was too wide to traverse the Panama Canal, so the ship instead went around Cape Horn … becoming the first Carnival ship to ever make that journey!

IMG 5470

Highlights:  It’s impossible to talk about the Carnival Sunshine without mentioning the feature which sets it apart from all other ships in the fleet. A gorgeous Serenity deck, complete with the waterfall! It’s easy to forget that from 1996 until 2013, the ship was known as Carnival Destiny. Only after a $155 million makeover did she become the Sunshine. This process also saw the Triumph morph into the Sunrise  and Carnival Victory transformed into Radiance .  The ship does have a few layout quirks which can lead to a bit of confusion when newcomers first begin exploring, but over time the ship has become one of the most popular in the fleet.

FAQ: Does Carnival Sunshine have a casino? Yes, it does. Does Carnival Sunshine have a gym? Yes!

Fun Fact:  At the time of her introduction, Carnival Sunshine was the world’s largest ship in terms of weight, being the very first to cross the 100,000 gross ton mark.

Carnival Valor

CARNIVAL VALOR43

  • Name:  Carnival Valor
  • Inaugural Sailing:  December 19, 2004
  • Crew: 1,180
  • Godmother: Katie Couric
  • View Carnival Valor Deck Plans
  • 575 Interior cabins
  • 1,490 total staterooms

Highlights: Another ship from the era when vessels in the fleet had themes, Valor’s through-line here is “heroes and heroics.” The message does get a bit muddled, with venues like the moon-themed One Small Step dance club and the Paris Hot Lounge. But you’ll also find all your favorite Carnival hot spots, including Guy’s Burger Joint, the Alchemy Bar and a steakhouse (although it’s called Scarlet’s here, as opposed the Fahrenheit 555 branding). Like other similarly-aged ships in the fleet, Valor isn’t going to have the big-ticket attractions. But those looking for a classic ship will find exactly what they were seeking once they step on board.

FAQ: Does Carnival Valor have a casino? Yes, it does! Does Carnival Valor have laundry facilities? Yes, it has self-service launderettes as well as laundry service.

Fun Fact:  The aft pool on Valor has a retractable sunroof, making it the perfect place to hang out on days with less-than-ideal weather.

Carnival Venezia

carnival venezia senior officers

  • Name: Carnival Venezia (formerly Costa Venezia)
  • Size: 135,225 gross tons
  • Inaugural Sailing: May 29, 2023 (originally March 8, 2019)
  • Guest Count: 5,260
  • Crew: 1,278
  • Godmother: Gan Beiye (a frequent Costa Cruises passenger)

Highlights: Carnival Venezia, as her name implies, has a Venetian theme that extends to many public areas. As the first ship in Carnival’s new ‘Carnival Fun Italian Style’ offering, the cruise line has merged the Italian influences with many of its signature amenities, such as a newly-themed Guy’s Burger Joint with an Italian burger on the menu as well as the Amari Bar, which is similar to the popular Alchemy Bar. Another distinctive feature is the Lido deck, which is modeled after the Italian Riviera and features a retractable roof.

FAQ: Is Carnival Venezia a new ship? It was built in 2019. Will Carnival Venezia have Guy’s burgers? Yes! Does Carnival Venezia have water slides? Yes, it does.

Fun Fact: Carnival Venezia was originally built for the Chinese market as Costa Venezia for Carnival’s sister brand Costa Cruises, and debuted in 2019. Alongside several other recent Costa ships, Venezia’s interior public spaces were themed after a specific region of Italy — in this case Venice. One of the main dining rooms features an authentic Venetian gondola atop lit-up flooring that’s reminiscent of water.

This was also the first ship to have the Havana staterooms and, perhaps more importantly, the Havana Retreat. The ship also boasts an IMAX theater and in the expansive Serenity area, a Fresh Creations salad bar.

Highlights: Mardi Gras is the first ship in Carnival’s Excel-class, boasting a brand-new design for the cruise line. The ship is divided into themed “zones,” including the casual Summer Landing with Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse and the aft Patio Pool, Italian-themed zone La Piazza, and New Orleans-themed French Quarter with a new restaurant by Chef Emeril Lagasse. The ship also features — for the first time in Carnival’s history — a side-facing atrium with floor-to-ceiling windows and a roller coaster on the top deck.

FAQ: Does Carnival Mardi Gras have laundry rooms? No, but it does have ironing rooms and laundry service. Does Carnival Mardi Gras have a casino? Yes, it does! Does Carnival Mardi Gras have a movie theater? No, but it does show movies outdoors on the Lido deck screen.

Fun Fact: Mardi Gras is the first North America-based ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas. She’s also the first cruise ship in the world to feature a roller coaster.

A Downtown Resident’s Best Tips for Cruising out of Seattle in 2019

by Prof. Cruise · Published March 25, 2019 · Updated January 21, 2022

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

As a resident of downtown Seattle with a view of the both Seattle cruise terminals from my apartment (#dreamscometrue) and a frequent cruiser (some might even say cruise addict ), today’s lecture will cover my best tips for cruising out of Seattle.

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Welcome Back to Seattle, Cruise Passengers!

It’s nice for us locals to have the city mostly to ourselves in the winter.  I can get my Moscow Roll at Piroshky Piroshky without waiting in a winding rope line like I’m about to hurl myself over a tracked cliff at Disney World while being asked, “would you mind taking my photo?” by throngs of tourists in a similar, neighboring line for the original Starbucks (not Mickey).

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Still, I’m ready to welcome the cruise ships and the cruise ship passengers back to Seattle.  I get goose bumps when I see the first ship of the season pulling into Pier 66.  And also resentful if I’m not going to be on it.  But mostly I’m excited!

We’re expecting upwards of 1.2 million people to cruise from Seattle, mostly bound for Alaska , during the 2019 season.  Based on passenger numbers, Seattle has been ranked the largest cruise port on the west coast for the past two years. It’s estimated that the cruise industry results in over a half billion dollars in economic benefit for the region each year and for that, we thank you!

Seattle’s Cruise Terminals: Two Going on Three

Currently there are two cruise ship terminals in Seattle – one at Pier 66 and the other at Pier 91. It was also recently announced that plans for a third terminal at Pier 46 are underway – it seems my prolific lobbying efforts have paid off.

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Before we move on, it’s important to establish which cruise terminal you’ll be sailing out of.

Where Will My Ship Be Docked in Seattle?

Pier 66: Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy, Oceania Regatta

Pier 91: Carnival Legend, Celebrity Solstice, HAL Amsterdam, HAL Eurodam, HAL Oosterdam, Ruby Princess, Star Princess, Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas

Everything you Need to Know About Pier 66 in Seattle

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Where is Pier 66 Located?

Address: 2225 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98121

Pier 66 is located along the Seattle waterfront, very convenient to all things downtown.

What are the Closest Hotels to Pier 66?

There are two hotels within shouting distance to Pier 66, the Seattle Marriott Waterfront and the historic Edgewater Hotel . The Marriott is located across the street and the Edgewater about a block to the north.

Where do I Park at Pier 66?

Parking for Pier 66 is located directly across the street on Alaskan Way. Vehicle entry is from Wall Street. Cost for parking at Pier 66 is $23 per day with a small discount available if you prepay online. Go here for detailed directions and additional information.

How do I get to the Pier 66 Cruise Ship Terminal from the Airport?

Your best options to get from the airport to Pier 66 (and from Pier 66 to the Seattle airport) include cruise line transfers, private shuttles, a taxi, ride shares ( Lyft /Uber), and for hearty folks, the light rail.

Cruise Line Transfers from the Airport to Pier 66

Every cruise line operating out of Seattle offers both one-way and round trip transfers to/from Sea-Tac to/from Pier 66. These can be convenient and a good value if you’re traveling solo or in a small party, but can become costly for a larger group.

Norwegian: $20-$30 per person one-way. Go here or to your online booking for more information.

Oceania: Call (855) 623-2642 or consult your online booking to confirm price and book.

Private Shuttle from the Airport to Pier 66

Shuttle Express: This shared shuttle service is the most popular private shuttle option at $24.99 per person each way. Shuttles are available to/from Sea-Tac to/from Pier 66. Go here for additional information or to book online.

Taking a Taxi from the Seattle Airport to Pier 66

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Taxi’s are readily available at Sea-Tac and at the cruise terminal after your cruise. A metered ride to the airport will likely cost you between $40-$60, depending on traffic. This is a good option if you don’t want to wait for a shuttle to arrive and load or have three or four people traveling in your party. More information for Yellow Cab can be found here .

Ride Share from Sea-Tac to Pier 66: Uber and Lyft

A ride share such as Uber or Lyft is a great option, and often the most economical. The Lyft estimator suggests a cost of $30-$35 from the airport to Pier 66. This is less expensive than a taxi and much more economical than a shuttle if you’re traveling with two or more people.

Is it Possible to Take the Light Rail from the Airport to Pier 66?

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Yes. But be warned, this options involves a good deal of walking. While there is a light rail stop right at the Seattle airport, it’s a fairly long walk from the baggage claim area to the boarding station. Then, once you exit the light rail at your downtown stop, the Westlake Station, it’s another mile to Pier 66 (downhill on the way to the cruise terminal, uphill on the way from the cruise terminal back to the light rail station).

If you feel like you’re up for it, it’s the most cost effective option at $2.75 one-way per person. Travel time on the light rail (12 stops) is 38 minutes and you won’t risk sitting in traffic.

Everything you Need to Know About Pier 91 in Seattle

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Where is Pier 91 Located?

Address: 2001 West Garfield St. Seattle, WA 98119

Pier 91 is located in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood near downtown.

What are the Closest Hotels to Pier 91?

While there are no hotels within easy walking distance to Pier 91, there are several that are close and convenient by car, taxi, or ride share. I would recommend these four located in the Queen Ann neighborhood near Magnolia:

Homewood Suites

The Mediterranean Inn

Inn at Queen Ann (for a less expensive option)

The Halcyon Suite Du Jour

Where do I Park at Pier 91?

Pier 91 Smith Cove Cruise Terminal Parking 2001 West Garfield St., Lot D, Seattle, WA 98119

Parking is available at Pier 91 for $27 per day with a small discount if you prepay online . The parking lot is located a long walk away from the terminal, but a free shuttle is available to transport you and your luggage.

How do I get to the Pier 91 Cruise Ship Terminal from the Airport?

Cruise line transfers from the airport to pier 91.

Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, Princess, and Royal Caribbean all offer transfer shuttle services to/from the airport to/from Pier 91. Check your online booking or call the cruise line for cost and additional information. This can be an expensive option for a larger group, but can be cost effective if you’re a party of one or two.

Private Shuttle from the Airport to Pier 91

Shuttle Express: This shared shuttle service is the most popular option at $34.99 per person each way. Shuttles are available to/from Sea-Tac to/from Pier 91. Go here for additional information or to book online.

Taxi from the Seattle Airport to Pier 91

Taxis are readily available at Sea-Tac and at the cruise terminal after your cruise. A metered ride to the airport will likely cost you between $45-$80, depending on traffic. This is a good option if you don’t want to wait for a shuttle to fill or have three or four people traveling in your party. More information for Yellow Cab can be found here .

Ride Share from Sea-Tac to Pier 91: Uber and Lyft

A ride share is likely the most economical route if your travel party is two or more. The Lyft estimator quotes a price of $40-$45 to Pier 91 from the Seattle airport.

Is it Possible to Take the Light Rail from the Airport to Pier 91

Unfortunately, no. It’s possible to get there by light rail and then a bus transfer, but I wouldn’t recommend this option.

Can I Walk to Pier 91 from Downtown?

Technically, yes. In fact, I run this route frequently and have walked from my downtown apartment to embark on a cruise from Pier 91 several times. However, this depends on a few factors like your fitness level and how much luggage you’ll have with you. I wouldn’t recommend it for the average traveler .

But if you’re fit and looking to burn off a few hundred final calories before fully embracing “all you can eat” or want a beautiful walk that will save you the cost of transportation to the pier, then go for it!

The distance from the Olympic Sculpture Park to Pier 91 is 1.8 miles. Note that there is a waterfront shuttle stop near the Olympic Sculpture Park. This is a free shuttle that services the waterfront and downtown areas.

How to Walk from Downtown Seattle to Pier 91

Check out my video with instructions on how to walk from downtown Seattle to the cruise terminal. If you try this, keep your eye out for sea lions, harbor seals, and bald eagles. I’ve spotted all of them along this trail.

Is it Safe to Arrive in Seattle on the Day of my Cruise?

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

There are many ways to get to Seattle for your cruise depending on your unique circumstances – train, bus, car, ferry, plane or, in my very fortunate case, foot. However you choose to travel, I’d strongly recommend you arrive at least the day before your cruise departs, unless you have travel insurance that would cover any possible travel delays (including getting stuck in traffic).

Seattle, and especially I-5, is notorious for traffic snarls. Even though I live downtown and avoid I-5 like the salad bar on the lido buffet, I’ve found myself parked in gridlock contemplating vehicle abandonment, “maybe a kind new owner will come along and give her a better life anyway,” dozens of times with, “at least I’m not trying to make a flight or a cruise,” as my only consolation. Don’t sacrifice your cruise to I-5, he’s a jerk and totally not worth it!

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Besides, the earlier you arrive, the more time you have to explore our beautiful city and the surrounding region and the more opportunities you’ll have to run into Prof. Cruise. Let me warn you though, you might discover me later as a stowaway when unpacking your luggage: “surprise!” Don’t worry, I’m small and won’t take up too much room in the bed. At least before I order my standard two to three desserts in the MDR every night.

What Should I do in Seattle Before my Cruise?

Or after! If you can spare the time and expense, consider spending some days in or around Seattle before or after your cruise. There’s so much to see and do.

Seattle CityPass

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

If you only have a day or two and want to hit the main tourist attractions near downtown, I’d strongly suggest purchasing a CityPASS . At just $99 for adults and $79 for children 5-12, it will save you a significant amount (nearly 50%) and is good for admission to the following popular attractions:

  • Space Needle
  • Seattle Aquarium
  • Argosy Cruises Harbor Tour
  • Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) or Woodland Park Zoo
  • Chihuly Garden and Glass or Pacific Science Center

You can buy the Seattle CityPASS here . We find this such a good value, we’ve purchased it several times ourselves to hit the sights with our out-of-town guests. They’re starting to recognize me at the Space Needle: “Oh, you again. You’re the one who passed gas in the elevator and then made a joke about it propelling us into space.”

Pike Place Market

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

If you didn’t spend all your money on DOD’s (drinks of the day) like I normally do on a cruise, there are hundreds of shops, restaurants, seafood, flower, bakery, and produce stands, and local artisans available to separate you from your remaining dollars at the vast nine acre Pike Place Market historic district. And if you’re out of cash, stop by just for the people watching and street performers. We have some characters (in addition to Prof. Cruise)!

My Flight Leaves Seattle Late in the Day. I Want to Explore the Area After my Cruise, but what do I do with my Luggage?

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Port Valet! This awesome and almost too good to be true service offered by the Port of Seattle will transfer all your luggage to your airline after your cruise for FREE. It’s available at both Pier 66 and Pier 91 and applies to the following airlines if you’re traveling domestically:

Go here for more information and instructions on how to participate.

How do I get from the Waterfront to Seattle Center?

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Take the free waterfront shuttle ! This is an awesome service for tourists and residents alike. I take it often to get from downtown or the waterfront over to Seattle Center (where the Space Needle and many other attractions are located).

What can I do Around Seattle if I want to Avoid the Crowded Touristy Areas?

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Fair warning, the popular tourist areas around downtown and the Seattle Center will be mobbed seven days a week during the cruise season. Arrive to attractions early to beat some of the crowds. But if you’d prefer a more peaceful and serene activity, consider spending some time at one of our beautiful parks or beaches .

Or if you have longer, I’d strongly encourage a side trip to one of the nearby national parks, either Mt. Rainier or Olympic National Park. You can find my recommendations for great beaches near downtown Seattle (several of which are accessible via public transit from downtown) here . And go here for my guide to Mt. Rainier National Park and here for my guide to Olympic National Park.

What’s the Earliest Safe Flight Out of Seattle on the Way Home from my Cruise?

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

This is a tricky one as there are many factors at play, such as how early you’re able to get off the ship (they usually have to drag me off), your transportation plans to the airport, and the day of the week (weekdays will take a lot longer than weekends). As a general rule, I wouldn’t book a flight before noon at the absolute earliest unless you’re flexible and on an airline that will re-book you for free in the event you miss your flight. Keep in mind that the security line at Sea-Tac can sometimes take over an hour. It’s a VERY busy airport.

I would also strongly suggest you enroll in TSA Pre✓ if you’re flying out of Seattle. It will save you a tremendous amount of time and hassle. It’s a simple process and lasts for 5 years.

Will the Removal of the Seattle Viaduct Affect my Seattle Travel Plans?

cruise ship almost tips over 2019

Not significantly. However, there may be occasional traffic disruptions as the viaduct is demolished and there will be associated noise and dust.  Keep this in mind when you’re selecting a hotel and give yourself some extra time to get around affected areas.  Check my blog post here for additional information. And make sure to come back to Seattle in a year or two for a fully revitalized waterfront!

Happy Cruising!

Say hello if you see me around downtown Seattle and please feel free to post any additional questions you may have in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them. Most of all, enjoy your cruise from Seattle to Alaska! Seattle is my favorite place to live and Alaska is my favorite place to cruise (you can check out my Alaska port posts here ). I hope you love them both as much as I do. Happy Cruising!

Thank you for your insights. Parking for Pier 91 is also available at Seattle CruisePark lot 1601 W Armory Way. A bit cheaper and they provide a shuttle to and from the pier.

Thanks so much for this post! We are coming into Seattle at the end of August and I’m so excited to see the beautiful city!

The end of August is such a perfect time to come to Seattle. The weather should be gorgeous. Let me know if you have any questions or I can help out with anything. Wishing you a fabulous trip!

' src=

Hello, thanks for the useful tips! We were coming into Seattle at the end of August and have 3 days before the cruise to explore. Besides the pass are there other things that you would recommend? We heard about the underground tour, is it worth it? Suggestions?

I’m so excited you’ll have a full 3 days to explore Seattle and the surrounding area! The end of August is the perfect time to visit, it’s normally gorgeous and not quite as crowded as many kids are back in school already. Will you have a car? If so, I’d strongly recommend hitting either Mt. Rainier or the coastal areas of Olympic National Park for at least an overnight. If you want to stick to Seattle and don’t have a car, I’d take the water taxi from downtown over to West Seattle and then take the free bus to Alki Beach for half a day. Here’s a post I wrote about Mt. Rainier and here’s one I wrote on Olympic National Park . And within this post is all the information you need about Alki Beach . As far as the Underground Tour, I’ve heard mixed reviews on it and have never done it myself. However, I have overheard parts of it while out walking my dog (lol) and it provides a lot of interesting history about the city. I’m not sure how much you actually see under ground, but it takes place in a historic, really fun downtown neighborhood (Pioneer Square) with tons of great bars, restaurants, galleries, and coffee shops. It might be fun to do the tour and then grab lunch or drinks in that area and explore around a bit. Be aware that there’s a large homeless population in that area. I walk there all the time and have never had a problem, but I like to mention it just so folks are prepared for it.

A few other suggestions for downtown: the Seattle Art Museum is nice if you like museums and Central Library (the main Seattle public library branch) downtown is really cool if you’re into architecture. Be sure to go inside and explore around. A walk through the Olympic Sculpture Park (hit it at sunset for breathtaking views) and a walk along the Elliott Bay trail are also nice, relaxing options.

Let me know if you have any additional questions I can help with and have a fabulous visit to Seattle and cruise!!!
