The Expo 2020 site in Dubai is rapidly taking shape as the emirate prepares to host the first-ever Expo in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region.

The six-month long event will run from October 20, 2020 until April 10, 2021.

Around 180 countries are expected to participate in the World Expo 2020, which will be the first where all the participating countries have their own pavilion. The Expo will also see participation from companies, NGOs and educational institutions.

Last month, the organisers of the mega event confirmed that they are preparing to award contracts related to parks and other works with construction well underway across the 4.38 square kilometre site.

Expo 2020’s three theme districts – Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, will contain a total of 136 pavilions for countries, NGOs and commercial partners.

On Sunday,  a video presenting a virtual tour of the Expo site masterplan was shared by  Dubai Media office on Twitter.

Construction is advanced on the expo’s three theme districts, foundations are complete and buildings continue to rise from the ground, the event organisers said.

External cladding on three theme pavilions has begun and will be completed by year-end.

The sustainability pavilion, which aims to be self-sustainable for water and energy, is due for completion in October 2019.

All major design elements have now been finished, after the unveiling of the Al Wasl Plaza.

A virtual tour of the Japan pavilion at Expo 2020 is set to be rolled out for people across the world who cannot make it to Dubai.

Two websites will be hosted by the organisers to capture the excitement and events that have been planned during the six-month fair that opens next month.

The pavilion's design is inspired by traditional origami shapes and the three-diamensional facade acts as a sunshade to protect visitors inside.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said the aim was to allow people to experience first-hand the country’s history and technology, Wam news agency said.

Japan is next in line to host the World Expo, in Osaka in 2025, and the digital tours have been planned to get people interested in the event.

Special sessions will also be held during which people outside of the Emirates can use remotely-controlled avatar robots to participate in functions taking place at the pavilion in Dubai.

“Where ideas meet” is the theme of the pavilion and organisers hope events will spark conversations and ideas that can benefit future generations.

The pavilion in Dubai consists of a hall with a floorplan area of 900 m2 and a height of about 23 m. Columns and beams ordinarily articulate architectural space horizontally and vertically, but here the columns spread out unfathomably in all directions. They penetrate walls and ceilings and end outside the building. The placement of the windows and the window reveals in the thin perimeter planes is a pure consequence of the geometrical arrangement of the columns.

Expo 2020 Dubai: Transitioning to the Future?

Expo 2020 Dubai: Transitioning to the Future? - Featured Image

During the past two years spent photographing Expo 2020 Dubai , I was often asked by friends what exactly it was. To align with its closure on the 31st of March, I would like to address that question from two angles. Most readers will be aware that the expo is part of a tradition dating back to the 19th century - a Showcase for companies and countries , a tourist attraction, a testing ground for technical innovation. But it is also a collection of paradigm studies on opportunity, sustainability, and mobility, as well as a lucrative building project creating a new neighbourhood in the Emirates and a future means of dwelling. Perhaps this last frame of reference is the most interesting for it is what most distinguishes this expo from others.

On the role of the Exposition.  The role of World Expositions changed and evolved at the same pace since the Great Exhibition in 1851 held in London as mankind and along with it, the world. However, individual pavilions of participant nations and artworks exposed continue to be the main attraction of each exhibition. Nations present at a world expo have the opportunity to showcase innovation, inventions, ideas, culture, and even art at an international level. These events facilitate the creation of pavilions and artifacts installed in them, which are state-of-the-art, cutting-edge, innovative, and perfectly represent the participant country.

Abstract.  The pavilion features the waters of Brazil - its rivers and mangroves, the birthplace of the fertility of life, a natural inheritance that underlies all discourse about sustainability on the planet. With its tensile steel structure and lightweight white fabric, the pavilion is a fabric onto which videos are projected, creating an immersive atmosphere of variable images, sounds, aromas, and temperatures, over an area of undulating, shallow water through which the pavilion’s visitors may walk. It is a place of interaction, of an arresting scenic character. It is a stage for the visualization of nature and culture focused both on preservation and on a future made sustainable through technology.

LAVA’s design of the German Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai is an ensemble of suspended cubes, a forest of steel poles, covered by a floating roof. Vision -  The desert sunrises and rays from it are reflected from many dew droplets on a desert flower. The flickers of lights remind me of card stunts of spectators of the soccer stadium. It also takes me to the sing-along rock concert. The cohesive and spontaneous energy of Korean ness is very well expressed in these moments. A vision of a giant stadium-like structure with bright flickering lights comes to my mind.

The Finnish Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai showcases the country's deep connection with nature and sustainability, contributing to its high quality of life. The structure with its tent-like entrance creates a point of commonality, reminding of Finland's nomadic heritage, as well as the Arabic text.

Designed by Toronto-based practice Moriyama & Teshima Architects and construction company ElisDon , the Canadian Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai aims to bridge the two cultures by echoing Canada ’s landscapes and incorporating Arabic architectural elements with its wooden lattice facade a reference to the traditional Mashrabiya.
