Born in Clinton, Oklahoma, Toby Keith’s love for music began at a young age. Growing up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and later Moore, Oklahoma, he spent summers at his grandmother’s supper club, Billie Garner’s Supper Club, where he developed a fascination for musicians and started playing the guitar at the age of eight. His early experiences shaped his love for music and paved the way for his extraordinary career.

Musical Career

Toby Keith’s musical journey started with determination and a demo tape. After relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, he struggled to make an impact. His breakthrough came when a flight attendant shared his demo tape with a Mercury Records executive, Harold Shedd. This serendipitous encounter led to his recording contract and the release of his self-titled debut album in 1993.

Toby’s debut single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” not only reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart but also became the most-played country song of the 1990s. This success marked the beginning of an incredible career. His subsequent albums, including “How Do You Like Me Now?!” and “Pull My Chain,” continued to dominate the charts, solidifying his place in country music history.

Acting Career

Toby Keith’s talent isn’t limited to music. He made his acting debut in the film “Broken Bridges” (2006) and starred in “Beer for My Horses” (2008), inspired by his song of the same name. His versatility as an artist extends beyond music, showcasing his storytelling abilities on the big screen.

Business Ventures

In addition to his music and acting career, Toby Keith is a successful entrepreneur. He opened Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, a chain of restaurants in various locations across the United States. His business acumen has made him a prominent figure in both the entertainment and culinary industries.

Toby Keith’s personal life reflects his commitment to family and faith. He is a loving husband and father, and his dedication to causes like Ally’s House, a nonprofit organization supporting children with cancer, demonstrates his philanthropic spirit. Despite facing personal challenges, including a recent battle with cancer, Keith remains a symbol of resilience and hope.

Toby Keith

Toby Keith is feeling hopeful after first revealing to fans in June 2022 that he has been battling stomach cancer . One year later, the country star opened up about his health ahead of his annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic with The Oklahoman , and shared that things are looking up.

Now that he’s had some time to take care of his health, Keith said he’s hopeful about getting back to entertaining fans in person. “I’ve got more wind,” the 61-year-old told the paper. “And I’m thinking about bringing the band in and setting up, playing two or three days somewhere just to see if I can get through two hours.” If that goes well, he’s hoping to be “out on the road this fall.”

“All I gotta do is see if I can get through two or three nights of work and get a little break in this chemo, and we’ll go back to work,” continued the seven-time Grammy nominee, who added that his tumor has shrunk.

On Monday, the Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic announced that it had raised $1.8 million in support of OK Kids Korral, a lodging facility of the Toby Keith Foundation’s that provides a free place to stay for parents to stay while their kids are fighting cancer. The top bids at the event’s auction included $120,000 for a guitar signed by Taylor Swift, $80,000 for a fishing trip with Keith and pro fisher Jimmy Houston, $70,000 for a dinner with Keith, $20,000 for a Game of Thrones trip to Croatia (11 were sold) and more.

Toby Keith announces Las Vegas concerts amid cancer battle: 'Get the band back together'

toby keith fall tour 2023

Toby Keith is back in the driver's seat amid his battle with stomach cancer , and he's ready to perform for fans again.

The 62-year-old country star announced Friday that he will be headlining two Las Vegas shows in December to "get the band back in sync (and) get me rolling again," Keith said in a video posted to Instagram .

The concerts will take place on Dec. 10 and 11 at Dolby Live Park MGM Las Vegas. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Oct. 27 and will be available at ticketmaster.com .

These will be what he called "rehab" shows that allow Keith to get reacquainted with performing. After being diagnosed with stomach cancer in fall 2021, the performer has taken a two-year break from music. He's done several public appearances recently, including at two pop-up concerts in Oklahoma and the People’s Choice Country Awards in Nashville.

Toby Keith has the 'old devil ... by the horns' amid battle with stomach cancer

In his video announcing the upcoming shows, Keith hinted at how his cancer treatments are going.

"I've been on the old rollercoaster. But Almighty's riding shotgun; he's letting me drive for some reason," he said in his Instagram video. "I was going to sit around here and do nothing like I have been. Or (I can) get up, go outside. Don't let the old man in, you know what I mean?"

He added, "(This is the) first time in my whole life I've been off over two years. I've never been off a year in my life. And through COVID and cancer, old devil's been at me a little bit.

"I've got him by the horns right now, so instead of just sitting around and waiting, we're going to get the band back together," he said.

Last month, Keith was honored with the 2023 Country Icon Award at the People’s Choice Country Awards. During his first televised performance since sharing his cancer diagnosis in June 2022, he performed "Don't Let the Old Man," his song from Clint Eastwood's 2018 film, "The Mule."

"I feel pretty good," Keith told E! News  at the Nashville awards show. "It's a little bit of a roller coaster. You get good days and, you know, you're up and down."

He added, "It's always zero to 60 and 60 to zero, but I feel good today."

Toby Keith Returns to the Stage for His First Performances After Revealing Cancer Diagnosis

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Toby Keith returned to the stage over the weekend, performing two full-fledged concerts at Hollywood Corners in Norman, Okla. — with each clocking in at more than two hours in length.

Toby Keith Says He’s ‘Feeling Pretty Good’ After Stomach Cancer Diagnosis, Hopes to Tour ‘This Fall…

The shows mark Keith’s first performances since announcing his stomach cancer diagnosis in June 2022, when he revealed that he had spent the past six months undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Some videos of his weekend shows have popped up online, including snippets of the country star performing his hits “Made in America,” “I Love This Bar” and “Dream Walking.” Keith performed with his Easy Money Band, as well as with longtime friend and collaborator Scotty Emerick.

The concerts came just before the July 4th holiday, appropriate timing given Keith’s longtime support of the United States military. He’s known for songs including “American Soldier” and “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” a song he wrote and recorded following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks carried out against the United States.

In 2022, Keith took a break from recording and performing in order to focus on battling cancer. In a June 2023 interview with The Oklahoman newspaper ahead of his annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic, he offered an update on his health and noted that he hoped to return to performing soon.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Keith said. “Basically, everything is in a real positive trend … you never know with cancer, so you have to prepare.”

He added, “I’ve got more wind. And I’m thinking about bringing the band in and setting up, playing two or three days somewhere just to see if I can get through two hours.” He noted that if that went well, he hoped to be on the road in the fall.

Toby Keith (full name Toby Keith Covell) is an American country music producer, singer, and songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee, originally from Clinton, Oklahoma.

Born on 8 July, 1961 Keith became interested in music during the summers he spent with his grandparents. At the age of 20, he formed a band called Easy Money Band with his friends Scott Webb, Keith Cory, David Vowell, and Danny Smith. The band played local bars, but Keith’s full time job was working the oil fields, at least until the decline of the oil fields in 1982, forcing Keith into unemployment, which gave him the opportunity to concentrate more on music.

In the early 1990s, Keith was signed to Mercury Records and his debut single, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” went to Number One on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1993. The single was the perfect lead off for his self-titled album, which produced three more Top 5 singles, and successful tours with Shania Twain and John Brannen. Then in 1994 Keith was moved to Polydor Records where he released “Boomtown,” which also reached certified platinum. In 1999 Keith moved to Dreamworks Records and after a small obstacle, he released “How Do You Like Me Now” which reached platinum and had a series of singles. In 2001 Keith earned the Academy of Country Music award for Album of the Year as well as Top Male Vocalist.

In August 2005 Keith started his label, Show Dog Nashville, with his first release in 2006 with “White Trash With Money.” After successful tours and a albums, he released “Clancy’s Tavern” in 2011, two singles of which were widely popular, even dipping into mainstream. He released his eighteenth studio album “35 MPH Town” in 2014.

Live reviews

The Toby Keith show was Amazing, he has the most powerful voice I have ever heard Except for Elvis )

Toby sang his heart and his lungs out for over 2 hours , barely taking a break to catch a breath and talk , he was cute and funny in the little stories he told , everyone knew the words to his songs . I didn’t realize that his top hits went all the way back to 1993. I’ve only been a fan for about 10 years . I have driven many miles and fought crazy traffic to see his concerts in other towns , I love the fact that he actually came to AQUA CALIENTE CASINO .

This is our town , so we couldn’t wait to go , I would buy another ticket and go back this week . Toby Keith worked very hard and tried to sing every hit that he could , people have made nasty comments about his RED SOLO CUP.

How hateful and stupud of them to say something bad about that , Every single entertainer ALWAYS NEEDS TO DRINK SOME WATER , or they won’t be able to sing , one of his biggest hits just happens to be RED SOLO CUP

So , of course he used one. What would you expect ?.?. He was drinking WATER , MY NEPHEW WAS WORKING as a STAGE HAND ! He knew what Toby Keith was drinking , all you people who had something bad to say ,

You should have stayed home , Toby put on absolutely one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen . Everything was perfect and it was my Birthday Present, And I could not have loved it more . He is a True ARTIST, PERFORMER AND SONG WRITER , And even more then that , He loves his country , his Flag, and he loves his Fans .

I sincerely hope that he comes back to the Desert , If it was later in the season , when the snow birds have returned .you could not have enough seats for his show .

I really hope that he comes back to the Palm Springs Area.

The concert opened with what appeared to be an extended commercial for both Keith's "Hammer Down" tour as well as Ford. Throughout the show, a massive video screen plugged shots of Mustangs, F150s, Thunderbirds and more. The prominent tour logo read "Ford's Toby Keith Hammer Down Tour." The only thing that was really "hammered" down on Friday night was Ford. Heck, the guy even played a guitar with a Ford logo plastered on the body. It's a bit hard, then, to swallow his "every-day man" appeal as he swoons about the working man and the blue collar life. After all, the $45-$65 per ticket concert was paid for, in large part, by a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with corporate America. But accompanying the shameless barrage of product placement and advertising was a pretty good performance by the longtime country veteran. He smiled, laughed and led the crowd on singalongs for songs like "Red Solo Cup" and "Beer For My Horses." He blew the crowd away with pyrotechnics, fireworks and a nonstop slew of smash hits culminating with his breakthrough 1999 song "How Do You Like Me Now." The 52-year-old is as good now as he ever was, with a rousing performance and a seemingly endless catalog to choose from. It was a great show with plenty of booze-soaked singalongs and rowdy dance ditties.

Veteran Country star Toby Keith has been touring relentlessly since his beginnings in the early 90's. Evidently having more success in his homeland of the States, the artist is more elusive to catch in the UK. However at a packed out London gig his loyal and devoted fans were treated to a 'greatest hits' set.

Despite clear and undisguised corporate sponsorship being plugged throughout, Toby is a down to earth performer who thanks the audience continuously and performs as though each member is the only person in the room. He conducts mass sing-along to the guitar heavy 'God Love Her' and 'Whiskey Girl'. His backing band are nearly as enthusiastic the frontman, playing their instruments at maximum effort to achieve those country sounds.

You would never believe that Toby has never made a single appearance on the UK charts by the level of enthusiasm showed by his audience when tracks such as 'Beer For My Horses' begins. The finale 'How Do You Like Me Now?' receives the biggest cheer and Toby leaves the stage feeling very pleased with himself and his show.

Toby Keith and Little Big Town put on a hell of a good show! Loved that it also benefited children's charities. Austin's Moody Theatre has fabulous acoustics although Austin traffic is a bit hairy, especially for an out-of-towner. While LBT only played for 25 minutes, Toby played for an hour and a half. We were treated to songs from every decade of his career as well as his cover one of my personal favs, Ted Nugent's Stranglehold. He was also very engaging, sharing stories, interacting with concert-goers. My only complaint is that from where I was seated, I only had a view of the top of his cowboy hat.

The concert was fantastic. I thought it was awesome that Toby mentioned the servicemen and firefighters of Canada. When he came back out for his final song, he had the Canadian Flag on the back of his guitar. I highly recommend everyone should go to his concerts. His band took part of the songs with their movements. I would definetly go see Toby again

Toby Keith Kept Playing to the End: Country Singer Performed His Final Shows Just 2 Months Ago

Keith's family released a statement confirming the musician had died at age 62 on Monday night

Performing meant everything to Toby Keith .

On Tuesday, the country singer's family confirmed that he died at age 62 on Monday night after being diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021.

Amid Keith's diagnosis, he made sure to keep performing and entertaining crowds until the end.

In October, the musician confirmed he'd be taking the stage in December for two concerts at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas on Dec. 10 and 11. He later announced he'd be performing a third Vegas show on Dec. 14.

Keith took to Instagram on Dec. 28 to call the sold-out shows "a damn good way to end the year," sharing a montage clip from the performances.

The country crooner also shared a thankful post on Dec. 31 to see in the New Year, writing: "Been one hell of a year with a lot to be grateful for. Here's to 2024!"

In September, Keith — known for hits such as “Red Solo Cup” and “Should Have Been a Cowboy” —  performed his 2019 track "Don't Let the Old Man In" at the 2023 People's Choice Country Awards .

He attended the ceremony and delivered a speech after receiving the inaugural Country Music Icon Award.

Blake Shelton presented Keith with the award, honoring him for his work as a musician, humanitarian and entrepreneur.

"Bet you thought you'd never see me in skinny jeans," Keith quipped while accepting the honor. "I want to thank the almighty for allowing me to be here tonight. You've been riding shotgun with me for a little while."

During his speech, he thanked his family and team, insisting "A lot of people go into making a big career like this of 30 years."

"Most of all I want to thank the fans for still allowing us to do what we do," he added.

Before his appearance at the 2023 PCCAs, Keith performed two pop-up shows at the historic Hollywood Corners bar in Norman, Oklahoma, on June 30 and July 1.

The performances marked his first since he announced his cancer diagnosis in June 2022 , confirming at the time that he'd already received six months of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

In November 2022, Keith insisted he was planning on getting back on the road .

"I need a little bit of time to just rest up and heal up," he said during an interview with CMT Hot 20 Countdown.

The singer-songwriter "passed peacefully" on Monday, his family confirmed in a statement.

They posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday: "Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage."

"Please respect the privacy of his family at this time," the message concluded.

Revisit Toby Keith's Gritty, Powerful Final TV Performance at the 2023 PCCAs

The gritty rendition occurred 5 months before the country star's death at 62.

toby keith fall tour 2023

Just months before Toby Keith's death, the country icon gave a gripping performance of his tune ''Don't Let the Old Man In'' at the People's Choice Country Awards .

How to Watch

The  People’s Choice Country Awards  will return on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 8/7c. Watch the 2023 ceremony on NBC and  Peacock .

During his powerful rendition, he strummed his guitar and sang in his signature baritone, taking a defiant stance on stage.

The moment was even more emotional considering it was one of his first after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. His wife, Tricia Lucus, teared up in the crowd while he was singing the heavy lyrics that describe coping with aging.

Toby Keith passed away from stomach cancer on February 6, 2024, at the age of 62, 18 months after revealing his diagnosis.

What to know about ''Don't Let the Old Man In'' by Toby Keith

Toby Keith performs on stage during the 2023 People's Choice Country Awards

According to  Billboard , Keith wrote ''Don't Let the Old Man In'' for Clint Eastwood's 2018 film  The Mule . The lyrics were inspired by a conversation Keith had with Eastwood. When Keith asked the actor how he manages his stamina at the age of 88, Eastwood responded ''I don't let the old man in.''

“When I finally sang the line, I thought, it’s got to be dark, it’s got to be a ballad and it’s got to be simple,'' Keith told the outlet of his songwriting process.

Following his raw performance at the 2023 PCAA, the song reached the number one position on the  Billboard   Country Digital Song sales.

The lyrics to "Don't Let the Old Man In'' by Toby Keith

Don't let the old man in I wanna leave this alone Can't leave it up to him He's knocking on my door

And I knew all of my life That someday it would end Get up and go outside Don't let the old man in

Many moons I have lived My body's weathered and worn Ask yourself how would you be If you didn't know the day you were born

Try to love on your wife And stay close to your friends Toast each sundown with wine Don't let the old man in

When he rides up on his horse And you feel that cold bitter wind Look out your window and smile Don't let the old man in

Look out your window and smile Don't let the old man in

Toby Keith marks multiple 2023 milestones

The country star is set to resume touring in 2024

Even with a two-year break from touring to focus on his health, singer, songwriter and entertainer, Toby Keith clocked a momentous 2023. The bells keep ringing as Keith hits additional multiple milestones.

Pandora surprised Keith backstage Sunday (Dec 10th) with a Triple Billionaire Plaque for performances of his music on the platform. Toby was performing at Dolby Live at Park MGM – a prelude to his 2024 return to touring.

During three Las Vegas shows this week, Keith performed for two hours each night. A highlight moment was when he sat center stage for an acoustic set of six songs he said “should’ve been singles.” Surprise guests Trace Adkins and Sammy Hagar joined Keith onstage during the December 10th show. And the audiences’ energy grew every night with chants of “Toby, Toby, Toby…” as Keith performed more than two dozen hits and “should’ve been” hits.

Jukebox company TouchTunes – which operates in 65,000 establishments nationwide – celebrated its 25th anniversary with a list of its top 500 artists of all time. Toby Keith clocked in as the top country artist over the last 25 years.

Trade publication Country Aircheck compiled the Top 100 songs of the last 50 years based on chart performance (Radio & Records/Mediabase/Country Aircheck), and Keith’s “I Love This Bar” earned a Top 5 position. The publication’s October issue featured Keith in an 11-page retrospective on his 30-year career titled, “Who’s That Man? Toby Keith Hits 30.”

Keith’s acclaimed 100% Songwriter album, was released last month (an exclusive limited edition red, white and blue splatter vinyl edition for Walmart has been sold out). The collection highlights his role in writing – by himself – many of his most iconic hits, putting him in company with other performing songwriters including Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton.

The People’s Choice Country Awards honored Keith with its inaugural Country Icon award during the show’s NBC/Peacock national telecast in September. Presented by fellow Oklahoman Blake Shelton, the honor was followed by Keith’s emotional performance of “Don’t Let The Old Man In.”

Following the PCCA performance, “Don’t Let The Old Man In” topped the Billboard Country Digital Song Sales chart and was most-added at country radio. Big Machine Records partnered with Keith to promote the song, which was originally released in 2015.

Keith performed two surprise hometown shows in Norman on June 30th and July 1st, drawing standing-room-only crowds to the Hollywood Corners roadhouse he purchased and renovated in 2015.

The RIAA issued 20 new gold and platinum certifications for songs ranging from Keith’s first single, the No. 1 smash “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” (triple platinum) to “Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)” (triple platinum) … scratch that … “Courtesy” certified quadruple platinum shortly thereafter. Call it 21 new certifications.

The 19th Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic – June 2-3 in Norman – raised a record-breaking $1.8 million , bringing the event’s all-in total to almost $18 million. Details here.

Legendary bait and tackle company Luck E Strike – acquired and revitalized by Keith this year – began shipping products from its new Greenwood, Arkansas facility. Toby attended the largest sportfishing trade show, iCAST, to support the brand.

Finally, Toby’s two December shows in Las Vegas became three when the first pair sold out in minutes. The December 10, 11 and 14 shows at Dolby Live at Park MGM set him up for the resumption of touring in 2024.

After Toby Keith’s death, doctors warn that stomach cancer signs are easy to miss

Country singer Toby Keith died Monday night at age 62, more than two years after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer .

In June 2022, Keith announced on X that he had been diagnosed in fall 2021 and had already received chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Then last June, he told The Oklahoman newspaper of Oklahoma City that his tumor had shrunk by a third and that he was continuing chemotherapy. He also received immunotherapy, he said — medicine that helps the immune system destroy cancer cells.

His death has sparked renewed calls from doctors to pay attention to signs of stomach cancer, which include heartburn, acid reflux, anemia, nausea, ulcers, pain after eating, sudden weight loss or feeling full after eating small amounts.

“A lot of these things are relatively innocuous. But of course with a cancer, that’s how it gets you,” said Dr. Fabian Johnston, the division chief of gastrointestinal oncology at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Johnston said doctors and patients may be inclined to dismiss symptoms like acid reflux as harmless, which can delay diagnoses. By the time symptoms appear, many already have advanced disease, he said.

The average age of diagnosis is 68 , and men have a slightly higher risk.

The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 27,000 new cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed this year, though the disease is still relatively rare: It makes up around 1.5% of new cancers diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

Overall rates of stomach cancer diagnoses have also declined slightly over the last 10 years. But rates among adults younger than 50 are rising , for reasons that aren’t clear.

“There’s something that’s going on — something we’re eating, something we’re ingesting, some combination of factors that’s modern and present — which is resulting in these increased cancers in young people,” said Dr. Ben Schlechter, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Schlechter said alcohol and tobacco — once common contributors to stomach cancer — are now associated with a minority of cases in the U.S., perhaps because people are smoking less .

Instead, many new cases are found in people with chronic acid reflux or infections with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori, which can cause inflammation in the stomach. However, scientists haven’t pinpointed why certain people with those conditions get stomach cancer and most do not.

For many patients right now, “it’s a disease of bad luck,” Schlechter said. “Maybe there’s an association with H. pylori infection. Maybe there’s a history of heartburn or reflux, but usually it’s not as clear.”

Schlechter said stomach cancer is generally aggressive compared to other cancers.

“It doesn’t mean that people are imminently dying. It just means that the tools that we have to cure them are pretty limited,” he said. “People do pretty well compared to 15 years ago, but we are hardly at the level of, say, breast cancer, where the commanding majority of people are cured with surgery and chemotherapy and things like that.”

Up to 95% of stomach cancers in the U.S. are adenocarcinomas, which start in the innermost lining of the stomach. From there, the cancer may spread to the stomach wall, the body of the stomach or the lymph nodes.

Patients whose cancer hasn't spread often undergo or receive chemotherapy or immunotherapy or a combination of these options, said Dr. Rutika Mehta, a medical oncologist in the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.

"In more advanced cases, we are not yet at a point where we can offer patients a ‘cure,’” Mehta wrote by email. However, she added that chemotherapy or immunotherapy may help prolong lives.

Doctors are also getting better at matching patients with treatments that target specific proteins associated with stomach cancers. For instance, some stomach cancers express a gene called HER2, which is also linked to breast cancer.

“The drugs that work in HER2 breast cancer to some degree work in HER2 gastric cancer. So we can now give those drugs to people with stomach cancer and substantially boost their benefit from treatment," Schlechter said.

Though outcomes of the disease are "generally poor," he said, they're "much better than they used to be."
