Exploring the Lesser Known: Here's Everything You Need To Know About The Seven Sisters of North East

Photo of Prateek Dham

Here at Tripoto, we take pride in introducing the most beautiful nooks and corners of the world to avid travellers, so they may explore them firsthand. And today I want to reintroduce to you the fascinating 7 sisters of India. Still majorly unexplored, visiting the Seven Sisters of north east India provides a very different experience than one usually gets while traversing the Indian mainland.

Which are these seven states? Why are they called Seven Sisters of north east India?

A famous Tripura journalist, Jyoti Prasad Saikia, had coined the term '7 sisters of India' during the course of a radio talk show in January 1972. It coincided with the inauguration of these seven contiguous states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Saikia also wrote a book called 'The Land of Seven Sisters' later, and that's how the nickname caught on originally.

Although the Seven Sisters of north east collectively only comprise about 7% of India's total land area, but the great ethnic and religious diversity makes them a must-visit at least once in a lifetime. Although there is political, social and economic resemblance amongst the states, but geographically each is gorgeous in its own way. And hence, what follows is fundamental information on each of the 7 sisters of India, so they may be visited separately or collectively, depending on the longevity of your plan.

You know that a particular place is special if its name literally translates to the "jewelled land". From professional sports to lip-smacking cuisine, from arts and culture to rich cultural heritage, Manipur lives up to its name with unprecedented elan. As soon as one enters Mizoram, one is bound to experience a strong sense of liberation in the air. There are minimal caste or gender barriers, and women can be seen walking around with confidence, alluding to the theory that there is no holding back in the state. With great music and beautiful mountains, Mizoram probably shares more with Myanmar than with India.

If you haven't been to Tripura yet, you may not get a better chance since its sublime royal palaces and temples will surely garner the world's attention soon. The state sees little tourism for now, even though there are no permit hassles. But this adds to its charm; it's largely unexplored even in this internet age. Agartala is the place you need to start at to access all the touristy destinations within a couple of days.

Famous for: Pineapples.

Average Expenditure Per Head (excluding flights): Rs. 8,000 for 5 days.

How to reach: The main domestic airport is in Aizawl and has regular daily flights from Guwahati, Imphal and Kolkata.

Photo of Nagaland, India by Prateek Dham

The land of Naga - the great snake, Nagaland's beauty is visible in the most mundane things. The houses are made of wood and decorated with ornaments and the villages are situated bang in the middle of beautiful valleys surrounded by majestic hills promising natural bounty. The state's location on the border of the country means that political disturbances are expected, so it's better to be aware of the current situation before visiting the state.

Famous for: The Naga Tribes and the Hornbill Festival.

Places to Visit: Kisama (to witness the Hornbill Festival in December), Dzoukou Valley (for mesmerising views from 2,500m above sea-level), Dimapur (for the historical ruins of Kachari).

Things to Do: Hike all the way up to Japfu Peak, the highest point in Nagaland. Stay like the Naga tribals in Tuphema Village. Spot a tiger at Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary.

Food: The denizens have been hunters in the past and hence their cuisine is dominated by meat and fish delicacies. Go for a traditional Naga Thali, complete with rice, fermented meat and the local chutney called tathu .

Climate: It's a wet state with average rainfall up to 2,500 mm per year. But when it's not raining, the climate is pleasant and humid.

Best Time to Visit: October to May.

How to reach: The closest airport to Nagaland is situated 75 kms away at Dimapur, which is directly connected to Guwahati and Kolkata.

  • A Complete Travel Guide To The Seven Sister States Of India

A Complete Travel Guide to the Seven Sister States of India

A Complete Travel Guide to the Seven Sister States of India

Cover Photo by Matt Alex

The mesmerising scenic beauty, the serene landscape, and quirky markets make northeast India a great escapade. While all the seven states have a peculiar resemblance, each one is striking in its own way. Moreover, the cultural diversity in these regions is truly impeccable. The interdependence of the seven contiguous states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura gave origin to the moniker. A famous journalist from Tripura – Jyoti Prasad Saikia, coined the term '7 sisters of India' during a radio talk show in 1972. She also wrote a book called 'The Land of Seven Sisters' later. This is how the sobriquet caught on originally.

With an eclectic range of things to do and places to explore, you can easily plan a trip to northeast and get ready to be spoilt for choices. While you might already know a good few things about the 7 sister states in India, give us a chance to help you look at them through a traveller’s eyes:

Assam

You cannot explore the seven sister states of India unless you cross the state of Assam (at least aerially) if you are travelling from mainland India. Known as Ahom or Tai-Ahom, the people of Assam are extremely hospitable. Their rich heritage and culture provide some interesting insights into their traditions and ethnicities. Do not forget to take a stroll across their well-maintained tea estates and rice fields. Other amazing places that you should not miss out on are (Kamakhya Temple) Guwahati, Majuli (the largest river island in Asia), and Kaziranga National Park (housing the endangered one-horned rhinoceros). You should also try the authentic yet mildly flavoured fish tenga. Also, bhoot jolokhia, one of the hottest chillies in the world is found in Assam. Try at your own risk!

2. Meghalaya

Meghalaya

Meghalaya literally translates to the 'abode of clouds'. It is a tiny state that is blessed with lush green pastures and meadows all across, all thanks to the plenty of rain it receives throughout the year. If you are planning a visit to Meghalaya between June and September, you will be able to witness some of the most admirable views of the lofty cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and the dark ancient caves. A trip to the 7 sisters of India is incomplete without the immersive experience of such natural marvels and the stunning view of the orchid gardens. Be sure to visit the alluring India Orchidarium and Botanical Garden in Shillong to admire over 300 species of orchids. Other stunning places that must be a part of your northeast holiday packages are Elephant Falls and Mawjymbuin Cave (Shillong) and Williamnagar (for birdwatching). Also, do not miss out on the stunning and surreal natural root bridges in Cherrapunjee.

3. Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh

Even though Arunachal Pradesh is the largest state amongst the 7 sisters of India, it is still the least explored one. Because of its virginal eminence, the region is able to host 26 indigenous tribes that reside here peacefully. The sprawling green pastures, densely lush forests, and lofty peaks make for an enthralling spot for nature lovers and backpackers. Other than witnessing some breathtaking views, you should also explore the stunning monasteries here. The Tawang monastery is known to be one of the oldest monasteries in India. It displays the traits and traditions of Tibetan culture. Also, do not forget to pay a visit to the Sela Pass that is known for its frozen lakes and unmapped trails.

Tripura

Another fascinating and captivating state – Tripura is the ancient home to the Bodos. The region still sees little tourism and is one of the most secluded places in India. Fascinatingly, all of this adds up to the charm of Tripura and offers you a stunning and immaculate place to explore. Start your sojourn from Agartala and get easy access to all the must-visit destinations in just a couple of days. The Unakoti hill features some incredible huge rock-cut and stone sculptures that date back several centuries. And while you adore these sculptures, do not miss the spectacular sight of water gushing from the sparkling waterfalls near the hill. Next, you can enjoy a peaceful boat ride around Neermahal which is a royal palace built in the middle of a lake. You can also trek with the tribal people in Jampui Hills for a raw experience in one of India’s seven sister states.

5. Nagaland

Nagaland

Literally translating to “the land of the great snake”, Nagaland is home to the fierce head-hunters. Known for its picturesque landscape, vibrant costumes, zesty cuisines, lovely weather, old-fashioned villages, exciting dance forms, and poetic songs, Nagaland is a place that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. Replete with majestic hills, natural beauty, and stunning valleys, every nook and corner of Nagaland offers a chocolate-box vista. One of the seven sister states of India, Nagaland emanates a magical aura that impresses every tourist. Something that you should not miss out on when in Nagaland is its wildlife safaris in the Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary where you can spot some unique species like Golden Langur, Hoolock Gibbon, and Hornbill. Coming to Nagaland’s delectable cuisine, you should go for the traditional Naga Thali that consists of rice, fermented meat, and the local chutney – ‘tathu’.

Mizoram

Known as the 'Songbird of India', Mizoram is nothing less than music for your soul. One of the smallest states in India, it is still one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. This is the place of minimal caste or gender barriers making it great for solo woman travellers . The view from Phawngpui Hills is enchanting. Known as the "hill of gods", it is the highest mountain peak in Mizoram. Hiking and trekking are some of the most sought-after adventure sports here. You can even go mountain biking on Hmuifang Hill and trek along with the pristine and lush forests of Lengteng and Mawmrang. Also, do not forget to savour some lip-smacking street food that is readily available all across Mizoram. You must try bai, a dish made of fresh veggies and pork. Visiting India’s seven sisters and not trying out the local delicacies?! You are missing out.

Manipur

Literally translating to the ‘jewel city’, Manipur is truly a gem that lives up to its name with unparalleled elan. Covered so densely with lush green forests, sunlight is a luxury here. Manipur offers the rarest of flora and fauna. Known for its exquisite handicrafts, this is a great place for shopaholics. Also, do not forget to pick a few souvenirs. You can come across some of the most authentic designs in Andro which is an ancient Manipuri village known for its pottery and doll exhibitions. Another eccentric spot is the Ima Keithel Women's Market which is one of the largest all-women markets in the world. Right from its scrumptious cuisines to scenic beauty, there are so many reasons to explore Manipur, one of the 7 sister states in India!

There is so much that one can explore in these seven sister states of India. Offering a glimpse of diverse ethnic groups, different religions, festivals, and fascinating landscapes; these places are a must-visit for every avid traveller. Although each state is so different in its own way, their resemblance is undeniable.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

7 sisters trip package

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

7 sisters trip package

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

7 sisters trip package

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

7 sisters trip package

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

7 sisters trip package

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

7 sisters trip package

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

7 sisters trip package

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

Regent Seven Seas Grandeur is the third of three sister...

The luxury pedigree that Regent Seven Seas welcomed with Seven Seas Explorer in 2016 continued with sister ship Seven Seas Splendor in 2020, but the third and final sister Seven Seas Grandeur offers up the best of class.

The ship’s features include the first Fabergé egg with a permanent home at sea. The blue-pearl-and-diamond sculpture titled “Journey in Jewels” is a small but commanding centerpiece rotating within its display case in the atrium for travelers to enjoy as soon as they step on board.

The egg is revealed as seven branches break away like waves that represent the Seven Seas. The ship’s godmother is Sarah Fabergé, the great-granddaughter of Peter Carl Fabergé.

It’s part of a 1,600-piece art collection that includes classic black-and-white photos from global destinations adorning the hallways between cabins to the steakhouse’s original Picassos. Travelers could spend a good afternoon wandering hallways and public spaces, akin to visiting a museum. A new app for the line also offers a digital art tour, like a personal guide.

“With each new ship, our team works tirelessly to identify and source the most impressive array of art pieces, building a collection that would be enviable by most modern-day museums, to ensure our guests’ time onboard is as enriching and thought-provoking as their time on land,” said Regent Seven Seas Cruises President Andrea DeMarco.

All three ships in the Explorer class are about 55,500 gross tons, with Grandeur sporting a 744-guest capacity among its all-suite offerings. The line has three older ships and just had two larger vessels ordered by parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, but they are not due until 2026 and 2029.

Until then, the three sister ships continue the line’s most refined take on their global, all-inclusive itineraries, with both Splendor and Grandeur set to return to Miami for the 2024-25 winter Caribbean season.

The line has given all three Explorer-class ships a succession of superlative monikers. Seven Seas Grandeur was dubbed with “A Heritage of Perfection,” following Seven Seas Explorer’s “the most luxurious cruise ship ever” and Seven Seas Splendor’s “the ship that perfects luxury.”

With 548 crew, Grandeur boasts a 1:1.36 crew-to-passenger ratio similar to its two sisters, so needs among travelers are attended to promptly.

The ship’s interior spaces are crafted by Miami-based Studio DADO, which has put its mark on sister lines Oceania Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

The Compass Rose restaurant on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur was designed by Miami-based Studio DADO. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

That includes new takes on main dining venue Compass Rose, which DADO founding partner Yohandel Ruiz called “a feast for the eyes.”

It’s filled with fantastical tree-like arches right out of Alice in Wonderland with a cascading waterfall sculpture. At night, thousands of individually placed crystal-faceted leaves encrusted on pillars and branches illuminate the space.

The ship has five signature restaurants on board, including steakhouse Prime 7, Italian option Sette Mari at La Veranda, French offering Chartreuse and the latest version of Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, this time bringing a delicate bronze-and-glass bonsai cherry blossom tree sculpture as the centerpiece at the entrance. It’s a welcome and fitting addition to the dragon and prayer wheel sculptures on its two sister ships.

This bronze-and-glass bonsai cherry blossom tree sculpture welcomes diners into the Pacific Rim restaurant on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur, the third of three sister ships for the luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises that debuted in late 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The ship has 15 suite categories, all with their own balconies. The pinnacle of sailing options is the 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite at $11,000 a night. It features a $200,000 Hästens Vividus custom handmade mattress, an in-suite spa retreat with a personal sauna and steam room and 270-degree views from the ship’s bow from a 1,292-square-foot wraparound veranda. Those passengers get their own butler and personal car and driver in every port.

Some seven-night Miami-based sailings go for as low as $3,700 per person based on double occupancy.

For everyone on board is the spa with an infinity pool that looks out over the stern, fitness center, jogging track, casino, several lounges, card room, library and main pool. Top-deck fun includes pickleball, shuffleboard, mini golf and ping-pong.

A big draw to Regent is the mostly inclusive offerings, including free and unlimited shore excursions, round-trip flights, unlimited internet, prepaid gratuities, ground transfers and other amenities.

One of the best offerings on board, though, isn’t free. Back again is the Culinary Arts Kitchen, a staple borrowed from sister line Oceania Cruises, but a massively popular offering that lets 18 students create memorable dishes under the guidance of a chef team.

Chef John Stephano leads a class in the Culinary Arts Kitchen on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur on Jan. 25, 2024. The ship is the third of three sister ships for the luxury cruise line that debuted in late 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

During a preview cruise for media in January out of PortMiami, the class was led by the amiable Chef John Stephano talking students through a pair of sample dishes – pasta al limone, which is lemon pasta, and French crêpes with an allspice berry ice cream, offered during what are normally two-hour-long classes twice per day on sailings.

“I promise you’re going to make delicious and delightful food,” he said but joked that “anybody that struggles with their culinary skills today, we’ll be sending you down to the galley to help us out.”

Stephano deftly demonstrates and drops bits of history and detail during the demonstration with students gathered around, who then go one of the 18 individual stations equipped with induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and a collection of tools, tongs, pots and pans, while he and assistant chefs make the rounds to ensure everyone is figuring out the steps.

The course options vary per cruise pulling from nearly 50 curated thematic class titles such as “1493: The Foodies’ New World,” “Familia Cubana” and “Flip-Flop Floribbean.” Classes are an extra $89, which is about the only extra-cost feature on a Regent sailing. They are often themed to the location where the ships sail.

The culinary team also has a hand in creating some of the unique excursions, which then pair up with some of the classes.

Grandeur just finished out its first run about the Caribbean during mostly sold-out itineraries from PortMiami and is now amid a set of Mediterranean voyages for summer 2024. It will then make its way to New York for fall color itineraries of Canada and New England in September and October and then return to Miami to begin the winter Caribbean sailing season into 2025.
