“The Godfather of Shock Rock,” American singer-songwriter and musician Alice Cooper (born Vincent Damon Furnier) has had a career in hard rock that spans over five decades.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on 4 February 1948, Furnier originally started Alice Cooper as a band (later adopting the name as his own) consisting of him on lead vocals, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway and drummer Neal Smith. The band started out playing various small gigs around Los Angeles, but with their “controversial” stage antics they did so without success; that is, until they signed with Frank Zappa’s new Straight Records label. In 1969, they released their first album, “Pretties For You,” and despite it reaching Number 1 for a week, it was considered a failure.

For the band, their success and fame came from their live shows. Deemed the “chicken incident” where rumors were made that a chicken head was bitten off on stage, the band used the attention to further their career, adopting the new “shock rock” subgenre of rock and roll. It wasn’t until their third album “Love It To Death” that they saw success in record sales, the first of what was to be a string of successful records both as a band, and as a solo artist. The tour that followed in 1971 featured their unique stage theatrics, including an electric chair execution at the end of the show; not to mention their androgynous fashion styles.

The summer of 1972 saw the release of their most iconic single, and album to date, “School’s Out.” It also saw a change of their on-stage presence with Cooper taking on a more machismo-type attitude. With the continuing achievement in their album sales and tours, the band put out yet another commercially successful album, hitting their peak with their last album as a group “Muscle of Love.” Due to constant disagreements and various other issues, the band went on a ‘temporary hiatus’ in 1974, a hiatus that they would never come back from.

It was in 1975 when the still Vincent Furnier legally changed his name to Alice Cooper, to continue making music as a solo artist; with his first album, “Welcome To My Nightmare” becoming a huge success. It was from this album the basis for the stage show television special “The Nightmare” was conceived, later gaining a Grammy nomination for best Long Form Music Video and setting rock history. However, by 1977 Cooper had hit his lowest point in his battle with alcoholism and was checked into a sanitarium to sober up.

Using his experience in the sanitarium, a newly sober Cooper released “From The Inside” and set his stage show for the album as the inside of an asylum. Unfortunately the sober Cooper didn’t last very long, with almost all of his albums from the 80s being deemed ‘blackout albums’ due to being under the influence of various drugs; consequently, the albums, which had a much different sound were not as commercially successful as his previous solo albums. It wasn’t until 1986 and the release of “Constrictor” that Cooper found his career back on top.

The 90s found Cooper touring more than spending time in the recording studio. The touring continued into the 2000s with the lengthy break in studio recordings broken with his release of “Brutal Planet.” By December 2010 it was announced the Alice Cooper (the band) would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, seeing a reunited band perform for the first time in a long time.

Live reviews

Alice Cooper is a living Legend and the consummate Showman.

Seeing an Alice Cooper show, and it is a show, is not so much like going to the Big Circus maybe as it is sneaking off to the Freak show while no one is watching. You know it's all fake but you still applaud and get a weird tingle down your spine!

But, and this is huge, Alice backs up his Freak show with Hit after Hit after Hit!! And at 68yrs old He still has what it takes to grab you by the throat and demand your undivided attention to his Sideshow.

Alice stalks the stage with that same slightly Campy Macabre appeal He has utilized for decades and it still works And though the theatrics on stage are maybe toned down on the gore aspect they still hold a certain "charm" as it were (yes the Guillotine is still used).

But again the songs are there to back up everything visually that is going on and Alice's Lyrics still hold up to this day. Whether it is lamenting your "lost" Teenage years while singing along to "Eighteen" or remembering that feeling of the last day of School before Summer vacation with "School's Out" (with a working of Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall weaved in) or wishing that Alice Cooper would run for office with "Elected" while Trump and Hillary berated each other on stage and then made out while Alice looked on in humorous surprise (yes it is a show) and the brilliant "Billion Dollar Babies" which warns of the pitfalls of over indulgence of whatever vice you wish to apply. And the list of great songs goes on and on.

To that note Alice paid homage to fallen Legends with covers of:

"Pinball Wizard" for Keith Moon

"Fire" for Jimi Hendrix

"Suffragette City" for David Bowie (my favorite)

But like all performers like Alice Cooper (Iggy Pop, David Bowie, etc etc). They are only as good as their back up band they put together and Alice knows how to put together a Band no question!

In my opinion this line up of:

Glen Sobel:d, Nita Strauss:g, Chuck Garric:b, Ryan Roxie:g, Tommy Henriksen:g

might just be his most potent since the original Alice Cooper Band!?

This Band is on Fire and is highly energetic. Alice isn't stupid either and having an attractive Female guitarist in your Band will guarantee a certain "appeal" no doubt. But Nita Strauss, like Alice, can back up her looks with her playing and honestly is just "one of the boys" on stage.

Alice Cooper puts on a horrific spectacle that will enthrall you with his gruesome theatrics and will keep you shouting out the lyrics of all his classic rock anthems.

After seeing a live performance of Alice Cooper it is not difficult to understand why he is often referred to as The Godfather of Shock Rock. His live performances have often incorporated such shocking displays of fake blood, boa constrictors, and beheadings of mannequins in a guillotine. Last time I saw Alice Cooper he beheaded a mannequin and kicked the head around stage like a soccer ball to the glee and horror of the audience. His stage presence is also engrossing wearing gothic, macabre-like clothing, black leather gloves, black eye shadow dripping down his face, and a cane that he often twirls around like a baton. Although Alice Cooper’s stage theatrics are much to be extoled, his musical capabilities are just as amazing. He puts great energy into belting out his classic hits such as “I’m Eighteen,” “School’s Out,” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy.” His backing band consists of well-versed musicians tightly working together to create a musical platform that allows Alice Cooper to adeptly perform his best work.

You never know what to expect from an Alice Cooper concert. It could be a mannequin’s head covered in fake blood getting kicked right at you into the crowd or it could be wild antics performed with boa-constrictors, but what one should expect is a horrifically, spectacular time.

This was the best concert I have ever been too. I love Alice Cooper! His costumes were amazing and I loved the snake he had around his neck for one of his songs. And I was especially happy when he sang my favorite song by him 'Poison'. I was losing it then. The music was awesome and cool. And the effects, all the smoke and fire and flamethrowers and all that stuff was AMAZING! The colorful lighting and everything was absolutely breathtaking. The guitarist and drummers really worked their hardest to give a good show. The show in its entirety was insanely amazing and absolutely over the top cool and fun. I was practicly going insane they were all so good! The song selection that they chose to play was really good and absolutely out of this world. Mötley Crüe was also absolutely amazing and I loved the little background speach about how they first met and all that. It was a really interesting story. The opening band was also really good. And the style of music they play really suits it for them, they make it totally amazing for people who really like it, and want to go to concerts for those types of artists and music genres. With Alice Cooper, ya always gotta expect the unexpected cause ya never know what he'll walk out onto the stage in.

Alice's newest tour, entitled Ol' Black Eyes Is Back, is out of this world! I've been to so many Alice shows over the years, so I had gotten used to his show in the last five years. I loved that show, the set, and all of the songs, but his new tour really deviates from the past few years. Alice usually carries over a lot of concepts from his previous tours, so the whole show was a huge surprise! He threw in so many old songs--songs he hasn't done in decades! The set was completely new, from the huge baby wandering on stage to the chandeliers above the set. The stairs leading to the platforms/tower in the back were astounding and the perfect background to the set. Alice sounds just as good as ever, and his attitude (including facial expressions!) while he sings shows that he's still on the top of his game at age 71!

But one of Alice's best assets hasn't changed: his band! They have always been stellar, and his band of the last five years has really brought their A game to every show. Ryan Roxie, Chuck Garric, Glen Sobel, Tommy Henriksen, and Nita Strauss all deserve their own honorable mentions. They are all unique in their own way and bring something different to every show!

The show was great, and even if we have seen 8 shows through the years, the band still managed to insert à few surprises. "We still have a long way to go" I don t recall ever hearing live nor "Guilty",

The surprise hommage to gone friends Moon , Bowie and Lemmy was classy and sobre.

The Elected finale was premium Cooper: funny first level but at a second level a cynic caricature of the sad american electoral system and puppets that play the Game. Same kind of satyrical humor as in " I love America". Indeed I think they should prep the crowd with that song just before Elected.

I definitely would vote for him.

There is one flaw in Alicés shows: he NEVER talks to the audience. Who was Moon and Bowie for him for example. Why not give us a show with a little insight into the history of the songs? Granted it is another type of show but the man is living history. Let s have a little of it.

The band was soooo good. Pinball wizard was astonishing. And , suggestion, I sould start a tune with a classic waltz from ... Strauss of course.

Exceptional show from beginning to end. The set list blew my mind since I have been listening to the band since 1969, and he played most of my Loved and favorite songs. He sounds and looks very very good for 73 years of age. The band included original band member Dennis Dunaway on bass, and the other members who have been playing with him for quite some time as well. Nita Strauss is amazing!!!! The entire stage set up, and the entire stage performance was mind blowing to me. He did something very SPECIAL at the end of the set list and before the Encore. As they left the stage, there were 2 screens located 1 on each side of the stage, they came on and his voice brought our attention to the 17 Students shot here in Florida last month and he paid a beautiful homage and his respects to the Families and friends of the students. He Encored with an amazing Schools Out. As I said at the beginning, Exceptional Show.

A Paranormal evening with Alice Cooper was a great show at the Ordway in Saint Paul, MN. Alice delivered an exciting show as is par for Alice, I have seen Alice Cooper several times and I never get bored with his act. He truly is the Godfather of Shock Rock, Alice Cooper and all of the members of the band are true entertainers, Alice played some material that I have not heard before and they were songs that have very relevant lyrics speaking to the way people are behaving and feeling (particularly here in the USA). If you have never had the extreme pleasure of seeing an Alice Cooper event you are missing out on one of the true great performers that are left. The only song Alice didn't play that I feel should be a staple in the act is Welcome to my Nightmare but I understand that when you have a catalog of hits like Alice has; it has to be hard to pick which songs to play and which to cut out of the show.

Great show put on by the ever young Alice Cooper, i have been a fan of the group since the early 70's but until now have not seen them live so was really excited. Kicked off with the very heavy Brutal planet and then straight into Under My Wheels, absolutely brilliant opening 10 minutes, They then play a lot of the more recent stuff which was really good but the show and the crowd kicked up several gears when the original band (minus of course Glen Buxton R.I.P) came on. This was what i and the majority of the audience came to see, they were amazing, just so good, Alice's voice has not faded one bit and of course he is the ultimate showman. A brilliant ending 'School's Out' incorporating Another Brick in The Wall with all the musician playing and being acknowledged. Excellent concert, would love to see just the old band playing live for a whole concert, now THAT really would be something.

Alice Cooper Announces 2022 North American Tour Dates

There's no rest for the wicked. Just ask Alice Cooper , who having just finished a run of U.S. dates will be back on the road just after the holidays!

Cooper will kick off a brief winter tour on Jan. 28 in Cincinnati at the ICON Music Center, with a series of shows that will lead up to his appearance on the Monsters of Rock Cruise that sets sail Feb. 9-14. He'll then hit the road in March with Buckcherry as support before playing a duo of dates with Ace Frehley in April. You can see all the dates, cities and venues listed below.

The VIP pre-sale for the run starts tomorrow (Nov. 2) at 10AM local time in each market, while the general public on-sale is set for this Friday (Nov. 5) at 10AM local time. Check Cooper's website for ticketing details.

Cooper is currently touring in support of his Detroit Stories album, a record that owes a nod to the city that helped birth his music career. The album serves as a celebration of the golden era of Detroit's rock history.

The singer's legendary stage show reveals his darker side, one that he cultivated as a young musician. Recently speaking with the Rock Classic Radio With Jenn podcast on Apple Music, Cooper recalled , "Rock 'n' roll needed a villain. True rock 'n' roll didn't have a villain," the singer recalled from his early days in rock. "We had all these Peter Pans... no Captain Hook. And .... I looked around and went, 'I will gladly be that villain."

But it's not all "bad," as he added, "I wanted Alice to be threatening and yet funny at the same time, you know? I wanted that combination of not exactly knowing what he was going to do, but you know, he may... he may slit your throat, but he would never swear at you ...know what I mean? He was a gentlemen villain and arrogant and condescending. And yet I didn't mind him slipping on a banana peel once in a while for the laugh. You know, there's nothing funnier than a guy like that, blowing it in front of an audience and then having to recover."

Alice Cooper Back in Penticton with Buckcherry this Spring!

Penticton, BC | Spectra Venue Management and Invictus Entertainment Group are excited to announce that Alice Cooper with special guest Buckcherry will be coming to the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC) in Penticton, BC on Friday, April 15, 2022.

GET TICKETS HERE

After wrapping a successful Fall 2021 tour, Cooper announced a run of January and February tour dates ahead of a headline appearance at the Monsters of Rock Cruise, which takes place from February 9 through 14. Today, Cooper has confirmed a slate of new Spring 2022 dates, including a run of Canadian shows – all show details are at alicecooper.com.

Cooper, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, usually spends up to six months a year on the road, bringing his iconic brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Known as the architect of shock rock, Cooper (in both the original Alice Cooper band and as a solo artist) has rattled the cages and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie. Alice Cooper concerts remain a “not-to-be-missed” attraction!

Cooper’s universally acclaimed new album  Detroit Stories is out now via earMUSIC. The record is a celebration of the sound and spirit of the Golden Era of Detroit rock, and debuted on the Billboard Album sales chart at #1 upon release in February.

The Associated Press called Detroit Stories  “a masterpiece of classic rock, soul and R&B in homage to the city that produced him,” while  Entertainment Weekly  proclaimed the release “a love letter from Cooper to his city, and one that encourages a deep dive into his own back catalog and that of his peers.” Variety  deemed the album “a delicious tip of the hat to ’70s classics such as ‘Killer’ and ‘School’s Out’ without sounding like a throwback.”  Rolling Stone enthused, “That spirit of rock & roll abandon still exists in Cooper’s music half a century later, and his inherent showmanship is why people still fill theaters to see his guillotine act. It’s also why his records are still fun to listen to: You never know where he’s headed.”

Tickets start at just $45.00 (plus taxes and fees) and go on sale to the public on Friday, December 10 at 10:00AM. Tickets can be purchased online at www.ValleyFirstTix.com or in person at the Valley First Box Office at the SOEC. VIP packages will also be available online.

Welcome To My Nightmare (1975 - 1977)

Welcome To My Nightmare Tour 1975 - 1977

Press Release:

The WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE tour marks ALICE'S debut solo effort with a back-up band who have all individually made their mark as fine musicians: Dick Wagner (guitar), Steve Hunter (guitar), Prakash John (bass), Pentti Glan (drums), and Jozef Chirowski (keyboards).

Co-Producer, Director & Choreographer: David Winter's achievements for television, motion pictures and stage productions are too numerous to list in full; he has worked with Paul Newman, Raquel Welch, Bob Hope, Rudolph Nureyev, Tom Jones, Ann-Margret; directed The Monkees TV series; choreographed the "Nancy Sinatra Special", "Hullabaloo", "Shindig" etc. etc...

Co-Producer & Lighting Director: Joe Gannon staged, designed and produced the massive and highly innovative Billion Dollar Babies set which toured back in '73. Also, he has worked closely with numerous artists including the Kingston Trio, Bill Cosby, Tiny Tim, Neil Diamond, Gregg Allman and Liza Minelli.

Stage Show: A magnificent collection of props and costumes has been designed for the show, which highlights songs from the new album ("Welcome to My Nightmare" Atlantic Records) interspersed with rejuvenated versions of golden oldies.

The ominous characters that appear larger than life on the stage of Alice's "Nightmare" include a 6-foot Black Widow spider dancers who will weave their way across a giant 12' x 20' web suspended across stage by a pair of aluminum pyramids; a giant cyclops (10 feet tall with an illuminated eye and detachable horned head), ghostly skeleton dancers and a cast of deathly and morbid effects — but have no fear — ALICE , as always, reigns triumphant for the finale...

ALICE COOPER Adds 12 U.S. Shows To Summer 2024 Tour

Icon, pioneer, and Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Alice Cooper has added 12 new shows to his summer 2024 tour.

Pre-sale tickets and VIP packages will be available on Tuesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. local time with code SICKTHINGS. Tickets to the general public go on sale on Friday, April 19.

Newly announced shows:

Jul. 30 - Niagara Falls, ON @ OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino Jul. 31 - Albany, NY @ Palace Theatre Aug. 02 - Kalamazoo, MI @ Wings Event Center Aug. 04 - Peoria, IL @ Peoria Civic Center Aug. 06 - Huber Heights, OH @ Rose Music Center at The Heights Aug. 07 - Rockford, IL @ BMO Harris Bank Center Aug. 10 - Tulsa, OK @ River Spirit Casino and Resort Aug. 11 - Park City, KS @ Hartman Arena Aug. 13 - Denver, CO @ The Mission Ballroom Aug. 15 - Valley Center, CA @ Harrah's Rincon Pavilion Aug. 16 - Costa Mesa, CA @ Pacific Amphitheater* Aug. 17 - Tucson, AZ @ Casino De Sol - AVA Amphitheater

The "Too Close For Comfort" tour brings fans closer than ever to Alice with giant video screens blending the live action with pre-recorded scenes to delve deeper into Alice 's world.

Expect spectacle — snakes, guillotines, monsters and more — wreaking havoc on stage nightly. Classics like "Under My Wheels" , "I'm Eighteen" , "School's Out" , "Poison" , "Billion Dollar Babies" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy" are staples and there are surprises every night, effortlessly drawn from one the greatest catalogues in rock and roll.

Fresh from the success of his latest album "Road" , a concept album about the thrills and spills of touring, Alice is back, accompanied as always by his long-running live band of Ryan Roxie (guitar), Chuck Garric (bass), Tommy Henriksen (guitar), Glen Sobel (drums) and Nita Strauss (guitar).

"For 'Road' , I wanted the band to be involved in the foundation of all the songs," says Alice . "I only see these guys when we're on the road. So, I wanted them to be as tight as they are for the show but on all new material. When you have a band this good, I believe in showing it off, and this is my way of doing so."

Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. He continues to tour regularly, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he’s best known for.

With a schedule that has included six months year in and year out on the road, Cooper brings his own brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Known as the architect of shock-rock, Cooper (in both the original ALICE COOPER band and as a solo artist) has rattled the cages and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie, even in an era where CNN can present real-life shocking images.

With his influence on rock and roll and popular culture long since acknowledged, there is little that Cooper hasn't achieved in his remarkable career, including platinum albums, sold-out tours and any number of honors and career achievement awards.

Don't get too comfortable Sick Things, the Too Close For Comfort Tour is only getting bigger. 12 new shows added this... Posted by Alice Cooper on  Monday, April 15, 2024

Internet users are getting younger; now the UK is weighing up if AI can help protect them

Artificial intelligence has been in the crosshairs of governments concerned about how it might be misused for fraud, disinformation and other malicious online activity; now in the U.K. a regulator is preparing to explore how AI is used in the fight against some of the same, specifically as it relates to content harmful to children. Ofcom, the regulator charged with enforcing the U.K.'s Online Safety Act, announced that it plans to launch a consultation on how AI and other automated tools are used today, and can be used in the future, to proactively detect and remove illegal content online, specifically to protect children from harmful content and to identify child sex abuse material previously hard to detect.
