Bengaluru, formerly Bangalore , is the capital city of Karnataka in south India. The city has earned several names such as Silicon Valley of India, Pub Capital of India, Air Conditioned City, and City of Gardens. However, prior to the IT revolution, Bengaluru was known as Pensioners' Paradise.

Now, it's a wonderful blend of past and present. Although Bengaluru may not have as many iconic attractions as other major cities in India, it does have a great mix of history, architecture, culture, spirituality, and nature.

Bangalore Palace

Built for Chamaraja Wadiyar X in 1887, the design of Bangalore Palace was inspired by England's Windsor Castle . As a result, this evocative palace has Tudor-style architecture with fortified towers, arches, green lawns, and elegant woodcarvings in its interiors.

The royal family still lives here today, and the palace is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.

National Gallery of Modern Art

If you're an art lover, don't miss visiting the National Gallery of Modern Art on Palace Road. This gallery, which opened in 2009, is the third of its kind in India (the others are in Delhi and Mumbai).

It's housed in a Colonial mansion with a garden setting and has two interconnected wings, one of which features works from the early 18th century up until India's Independence while the other displays work from a large number of modern and contemporary artists.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m until 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. It's closed on Monday. There is a cafe on the premises as well, which is open fewer hours than the gallery itself.

Tipu Sultan's Palace and Fort

Situated inside the Bangalore Fort area, Tipu Sultan's Palace was originally built by Kempe Gowda using mud. Later, Hyder Ali started reconstruction in Indo-Islamic architecture. This was completed by his son, Tipu Sultan, in 1791.

The Hindu temple seen in the courtyard of the fort is the proof of Tipu Sultan's religious tolerance. The palace is open daily from 8.30 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. daily. Combine visiting it with nearby Krishna Rajendra Market.

Krishna Rajendra (KR) Market

This vivid, traditional local market is an assault on the senses and a treat for photographers, and in the middle of it, you'll find Bengaluru's bustling flower market. The market also sells a variety of fresh produce, spices, and copper items.

Go there in the early morning to best experience the colors and crowds, when piles of fresh stock are being unloaded and sold.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden

This expansive garden started out as a private Mughal-style garden for the city's royal rulers. It was established in 1760 by Hyder Ali and later extended by his son Tipu Sultan.

It now covers 240 acres and derives its name from the red roses that bloom throughout the year there. The garden is said to have the most diverse species of plants in the world. Its focal point is a majestic glasshouse, built in 1889 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales. It was designed along the lines of the Crystal Palace in London.

The garden is open daily from 6.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. throughout the year. It takes on a festive look during India's Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, with a captivating show of over 200 varieties of flowers. The show also features an exhibition of hybrid vegetables.

Cubbon Park

Occupying a 300-acre area in Bangalore's business district, Cubbon Park is a popular place for walkers, joggers, nature lovers, and anyone who just wants to laze around. The park was named after the erstwhile Commissioner of Mysore, Sir Mark Cubbon. Many ornamental and flowering trees, both exotic and indigenous, can be found there. Kids will enjoy the special Bal Bhavan play area and aquarium inside the park.

Vidhana Soudha

First opened in 1956, Vidana Soudha is a landmark of Bengaluru and is located next to Cubbon Park. This enormous building is a massive example of neo-Dravidian architecture, complete with four domes on its four corners. It houses the Legislative Chamber of Karnataka Government and accommodates many other government departments. Unfortunately, it's not open to the public but is stunningly illuminated at night.

Attara Kacheri (High Court) and Surroundings

This eye-catching red, two-storied building, built in 1867 under the reign of Tipu Sultan, has magnificent neoclassical architecture. It houses the High Court and many lower courts, and sits opposite Vidana Soudha at the entrance to Cubbon Park.

Close to the Court is the red, Gothic-style State Central Library building, with imposing stone and fluted pillars. Nearby, the highlight at the Government Museum is a collection of artifacts and stone carvings dating back to the 12th century, and excavated from places including Hampi . Adjacent to the Museum is Venkatappa Art Gallery, devoted to displaying famous paintings, plaster of Paris works and wooden sculptures of renowned artist Venkatappa (who painted for the royal family). Tickets for the museum also provide entry to the art gallery.

Ulsoor Lake

Picturesque Ulsoor Lake is spread over an area of 125 acres in the heart of the city, north of M.G. Road. It was constructed by Kempe Gowda II. It's open daily, except Wednesdays, from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Boating facilities are provided by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation. There's also a walking track around the lake.

9. Shivaganga Hill

At a distance of 50 Kms from Bangalore (close to NH4 towards Tumkur), Shivaganga Hill lies at an altitude of 4599 ft and it is a good short trekking destination near Bangalore and a popular tourist place to visit near Bangalore. There are also two Shiva temples, one very close to the foot of the hill, called Shivaganga Temple and another one at top of the hill, called Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple. The unique feature of the hill is that it looks like a bull from the East, a Ganesha from the West, a Linga from the South and a cobra from the North. A set of well laid steps will lead you to the top of hill where the shrine of Gavi Gangadhareshwara Cave temple is situated. There is a ruined fort at the bottom of the hill near Shivaganga Temple. The Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple is believed to be very ancient, built in 13th century by Hoysala's. The current structure was built during 18th century. There is a huge rock with a large Nandi statue which offers a panoramic view of the plains below the hill. There is a fresh water spring called Pathala Ganga on the way to hilltop past Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple. The water here is considered to be as holy. The trek to hilltop takes around 30-40 minutes one way. While driving from Bangalore, a diversion is required at Dobbaspet (before Tumkur) towards left and Shivaganga Hill is about 7 Kms from here.

At a distance of 72 Kms from Bangalore (near Tumkur), Devarayanadurga is a rocky hill situated in the midst of picturesque locality at an altitude of 3940 ft. The main attraction of Devarayanadurga is the temples of Yoga Narasimha & Bhoga Narasimha. The Bhoga Narasimha temple is located at the foothills while the Yoga Narasimha shrine is located at the top of the hill. This is one of the popular tourist places near Bangalore . Situated on Bangalore-Hassan-Mangalore road, Sri Siddalingeshwara Swami Temple is one of the most important pilgrimage centers of the state as it is the tomb i.e., Nirvikalpa Shivayoga Samadhi of Tontada Siddhalinga a great Vireshaiva teacher and author who flourished at the end of the 15th century. He traveled far and wide preaching Sharana faith which is predominantly praying with ISHTA LINGA (Atma linga) as envisaged by Basavanna, Allamaprabhu, and a vast group of learned men and women from all walks of life. He performed 12 years of penance at a garden belongs to Vokkaligara Nambiyana (Thota) and hence came to be known as Thontada Siddalingeshwara Swamy. The Siddlingeshwara temple faces north and is a fairly large Dravidian structure. The majority of credit for propagating art and culture in Bangalore duly goes to Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath — a cultural organization located at the core of the city. The organization hosts periodic exhibitions that amass millions of patrons every year. Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath’s art complex has tasteful galleries that are open all year round.

The botanical garden in south Bangalore is a floral extravaganza and home to diverse species of flora. Lalbagh is a brainchild of Hyder Ali, erstwhile ruler of Mysore, who was infatuated with the Persian style of gardening and architecture. As it stands today, Lalbagh is a popular destination for Bangaloreans and tourists alike.

Bannerghatta National Park

Bannerghatta National Park is a one-stop destination to witness the fauna merely 20 miles from the capital. The national park is under the government’s tutelage and offers safaris through the biological reserve consisting of exotic Bengal tigers and majestic Indian elephants among other animals. Besides safari, there’s a zoo, an aquarium, a spooky snake house and a vibrant butterfly yard all within the national park’s domain.

ISKCON begs to differ from conventional temples of Hinduism in terms of modus operandi and methodology. Bangalore Palace

This Tudor-style architectural marvel of Bangalore is nothing shy of a palatial epitome. Bangalore Palace has earnest foundations attributed to the Wodeyars of Mysore under the guardianship of the British. Since its inception, the palace has been the subject of ownership turmoil but that hasn’t tarnished the glory of a building that features ornate carvings, heavy embellishments and pristine Victorian-styled furniture.

Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace

‘Rash-e-Jannat’ or ‘Envy of the Heavens’ is the summer abode of ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan (1750-1799). Tipu Sultan, for his part, is celebrated for his heroics in the battlefield, but he had an appetite for art and culture too—something—evident in his summer palace. The palace is a typical example of Indo-Islamic architecture featuring sturdy columns and meticulously done motifs.

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is a center for learning and awareness of astronomy. The planetarium hosts year round activities like workshops and exhibitions that are attended by many. The primary attraction of the planetarium is the Sky Theater which televises the celestial happenings under a single roof.

Venkatappa Art Gallery/Government Museum

The demise of one of the most celebrated artisans of Karnataka, K. Venkatappa, paved way for an admirable memorial in the form of Venkatappa Art Gallery. Venkatappa’s watercolor works and other collections are on display in the captivating gallery. Government Museum is a prestigious archaeological museum situated along Venkatappa Art Gallery. The museum is home to a plethora of artifacts that have historical significance to the country and the state alike.

Devanahalli Fort

The sturdy Devanahalli Fort is located 22 miles away from Bangalore city at Devanahalli, a quaint town with rich history. The fort was built by a scion of the Morasu Wokkalu family by the name Mallabairegowda. Since its inception, the fort was in turmoil for the better part falling into the clutches of several rulers. Perhaps that explains the apparent fortification featuring heavy masonry and huge bastions with gun points.

Nandi Hills

A slight detour en route to the airport can lead to a picturesque hill that offers an ethereal view of the sunrise. The journey to the summit is demanding due to the meandering roads and sharp bends, yet the view can be equally rewarding. Bangaloreans flock to Nandi Hills in the early mornings to get a whiff of the best things the nature has to offer.

National Gallery of Modern Art

The government of India is taking a solemn stance on art and culture which is reflected in National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) centers across the country. Bangalore’s NGMA is a relatively new establishment that houses renowned works of famous artists like Raja Ravi Verma, Jamini Roy and Amrita Sher-Gil. The gallery is located adjacent to Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium at the hub of the city.

Janapada Loka

Janapada Loka —folk world in Kannada—is a folk setting in the outskirts of Bangalore mimicking the culture and traditions of the land. The 15-acre establishment features over 5,000 folk artifacts that echo the diverse culture from different corners of the state of Karnataka. Janapada Loka has subdivisions like Loka Mahal and Chitra Kuteera — each special in their own way.

Sankey Tank

Sankey Tank is an enormous man-made tank in west Bangalore that serves as a popular landmark today, contrary to its initial function. The construction of the tank took place in 1882 in the wake of the Great Famine of 1876–78 to protect from water scarcity. 1. Bangalore Palace

The Bangalore Palace has always been considered as one of the most striking palaces built in the country and was constructed by Chamaraja Wodeyar in the 19 th century. 2. Devanahalli Fort

Devanahalli Fort is located in Devanahalli, Karnataka, India, to the north of Bangalore. Malla Byre Gowda of Avathi, a Vijayanagara empire vassal, built a mud fort at Devanadoddi in 1501. Hyder Ali reconstructed the fort in stone in the late 18th century, resulting in the current structure.

It was built in 1501 by Malabari Gowda and passed down through his descendants until the mid–eighteenth century. Nagarajaiah, the then Dalwai of Mysore, attacked and occupied the fort in 1749. Devanahalli was a part of Gangawadi and was later ruled by the Rashatrakutas, Nolambas, Pallavas, Cholas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara rulers. Malla Baire built the first mud fort in 1501 AD with the consent of Devaraya at Devanadoddi, the previous name of Devanahalli, during the reign of Vijayanagara. The fort was captured by the Wodeyars of Mysore under the command of Nanja Raja in 1747 AD. It was conquered by the Marathas several times before falling under the control of Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan.

2. Jaanapada Loka

The idea of establishing a museum to showcase Karnataka’s rich folk art and culture came from H. L. Nage Gowda, a civil servant and folklorist who made it his lifetime goal after retiring. The Karnataka Janapada loka Parishat, founded in March 21, 1979, with the goal of promoting, conserving, propagating, and documenting Karnataka’s folk traditions. Janapada Loka was founded under the auspices of this institution. Following his retirement from government service, Gowda raised funds through contributions from friends and his retirement benefits to establish a core fund with which he purchased 15 acres of land on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway and established the Janapada Loka, a “folk cosmos,” on March 12, 1994, creating a village ambiance with lush green vegetation.

However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. Located 22 km away from Bangalore, the Bannerghatta National Park is an asylum for a large variety of flora and fauna. Spread over a massive area of around 104.27 sq. km, this national park was established in the year 1971. The park itself has a number of establishments within its confines, which includes the country's first butterfly park as well. Located 21 kms southwest of Bangalore on Kanakpura Road atop Panchagiri Hills, Art of Living Centre is the headquarter of the spiritual, cultural organization Art of Living Foundation, established by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Constructed in 1986, the ashram focuses at creating a stress-free society through its multitudinous programmes which include yoga, meditation, Ayurveda treatments etc. The magnanimous campus housing several mini gardens, tiny water lake and abundance of trees is popularly called the ?Bangalore Ashram? and draws over 1.2 million people from across the world annually. The centre is considered a retreat from the stress and din of the city and provides the much needed therapy and solace from city blues. 15. Marvel at the Magnificent Devanahalli Fort

Known for its historical significance and archaeological brilliance, Devanahalli Fort is located 35 kms north of the city of Bangalore. The fort is a living example of the extensive battles fought and won and of the royal families. Lately in ruins, the fort once was the birthplace and residence of the great warrior Tipu Sultan. Sprawling over a vast area of 20 acres, the building is essentially made of stone and mortar. Originally built in 1501, by the Mallebyre Gowda during the reign of Saluva Dynasty, until the Dalwai of Mysore Nanjarajaiah occupied it in 1749. Later it was taken over by Hyder Ali before finally being passed on to Tipu Sultan.

The Bull Temple, also known as Nandi Temple, is one of the oldest temples in the city of Bengaluru. The temple is popularly called as 'Dodda Basavana Gudi' by the locals and is the biggest temple dedicated to Nandi in the world. Nandi, the bull, is the mount or 'vahana' of Lord Shiva and the guardian deity of Lord Shiva's abode, Kailashagiri; according to Hindu traditions. This temple is every Shiva devotee's must-visit destination because Nandi holds great importance to Lord Shiva. 17. Pay a Visit at Halasuru Someshwara Temple

Located in the suburbs of Halasuru (Ulsoor) in Bangalore, Halasuru Someshwara Temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. Dating back to the Chola period, the temple is the oldest in all of Bangalore. Built in around the 12th and the 13th centuries by the Hoysalas, the temple is now managed and maintained by the Endowment Department of the Karnataka government. However, major modifications and additions to the temple were made during the Vijayanagar empire. Besides the several other notable features of the temple, the most fascinating are the elaborate sculptures of Ravana holding the Kailash Parvat to please Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga slaying Mahishasura (a demon), scenes from the wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvati, images of the Saptarishis etc.

Originally built as a mud fort in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I, Bangalore Fort was finally transformed into a stone fort in 1761 by Haider Ali. Located in the heart of the city, the sturdy fort is currently in ruins. It was torn down by the British and what remains today is the historical Delhi Gate. Yet it is still a popular tourist attraction of the city.

Chunchi falls, is an almost 50 feet high cascade of falls, which is fed by the river Arkavati. Chunchi Falls lies en route to Mekedatu and Sangama.
