Wildlife & Scenic River Tours

Belize jungle river and inland tours.

Belize is well known for the conservation of its vast rainforest. There is no better way to delve into this untouched jungle than on our Wild and Scenic River Tours. On these river tours and with the help of our knowledgeable guides there is an increased possibility of spotting numerous wildlife species. Be with animals in their natural habitat as you flow around our winding rivers.

Belize Monkey River Tour

Monkey River Tour

  • À la carte Tour

An enticing tour of Monkey River awaits

Travel the Monkey River via boat to explore this extensive mangrove and wildlife habitat for monkeys, manatees, dolphins, tropical birds, and the occasional crocodile.

Begin your tour by riding through a lagoon surrounded by red mangroves along the coast of Belize. Here, be on the lookout for endangered manatees. As you reach the mouth of the Monkey River, your guide will point out numerous iguanas, turtles, and birds as you motor slowly up the river. Don’t be startled when you hear the bizarre sounds of the Black Howler Monkey as they communicate with each other to declare their territory. Nothing you read could ever prepare you for hearing these monkeys for the first time; you just have to experience it!

This tour is included as an option in the Belize Eco-Explorer Add-On .

Venture deeper into the jungle in the hopes of seeing the howler monkeys close up. Learn about the different plant and tree species as your guide leads the way along the nature trail (sometimes through water) further away from the river. The sound of a troop of howler monkeys as they burst out in a raucous chorus will tingle the hair on the back of your neck as you move along. It’s hard to believe that an animal that weighs only 30 pounds can sound as big as an elephant.

As your tour comes to an end, return to the mouth of the river and stop in at Monkey River Village for a genuine Creole lunch. After lunch, board the boat for your return.

Timetable:  24 hours noticed required Departure Time:  7:00am Return Time:  4:00pm Travel Time:  60 minutes each way Included:  transportation, certified guide, lunch, and taxes & fees

What to bring:  bug repellent, camera, binoculars, sturdy hiking shoes or tennis shoes, water bottles, and power/granola bars, and money for souvenirs

Tour Pricing & Availability: This tour is included as an option in the Belize Eco-Explorer Add-On .

It can be purchased for US$175 per person with a 2 person minimum requirement on scheduled days (Thursdays) only; 4 person minimum requirement for out of schedule tour day.

Inland Blue Hole and The Belize Zoo

Discover the sapphire waters of the inland blue hole.

Start your day off by driving to the Belize Zoo to enjoy a close-up view of our local fauna in their natural surroundings which include over 150 animals such as jaguars, monkeys, toucans, scarlet macaws, tapirs, snakes, and many more. Feel free to take pictures and ask our professional tour guides any questions you may have.

Proceed to the Blue Hole National Park along the Hummingbird Highway on your way back to Hopkins. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the sapphire blue waters of the Inland Blue Hole, a sinkhole fed by an underground river. Upon arriving, take a short 15-minute hike to witness the bright hues of the sinkhole piercing through the green foliage. Beams of sunlight penetrate the thick jungle canopy above and reflect off the glass-like surface of the water. Birds are often seen resting on the over-hanging vines, specifically the jacamars and blue-crowned marmots. Look out for a variety of hummingbirds like the scarlet-rumped tanager and listen for the nightingale wren.

This sinkhole was formed by the collapse of an underground limestone cave. The pool itself lies at the bottom of this large depression in the jungle. From ground level it drops about 100 feet to the surface of the water and after which the water drops to 25 feet into an underground cave system. A thrilling yet refreshing swimming experience, you don’t want to miss visiting the Inland Blue Hole!

Timetable:  24 hours noticed required Departure Time:  7:00am Return Time:  5:00pm Travel Time:  110 minutes each way Included:  transportation, certified guide, packed lunch, and taxes & fees

Monkey River Tour – Everything You Need To Know

belize howler monkeys

Want to see Howler Monkeys in Belize? We’ve Got Your Destination!

An abundance of visitors come to Belize to see wildlife in a nation so sparsely populated, mile upon mile of rain forest, jungle and preserves keep this wildlife legacy safe for future generations. If asked to pick one animal visitors enjoy seeing most, adults and kids grin when agreeing: “Monkeys!” For North Americans who have never seen a monkey outside a zoo, a Monkey River Tour could be the high point of your travels.

Monkey River Tour

A Monkey River adventure takes travelers deep into the land of Howler Monkeys, primates so loud, they could never hide from predators without giving themselves away. To visit their neighborhood, you’ll first have to journey from Placencia (if you are vacationing in Placencia Peninsula) to Monkey River Village by boat, passing  mangrove swamp and other exotic scenery that includes wild flowers, scaly critters and (if you’re lucky) manatees, since these gentle marine mammals make their homes here among mangrove-filled estuaries.

Why visit Monkey River?

This one-of-a-kind excursion is fascinating and fun for people of all ages. Kids stare wide-eyed at monkeys whose cries far exceed decibels coming from heavy-metal rock bands! Adults learn more about life along a river bank that explodes with color and sounds: birds, animals and plants, all of which co-exist nicely here in southern Belize. Learn about medicinal plants and take a refreshing swim during your tour. You can look forward to Creole cookery prepared by villagers (please bring money for lunch) that is so tasty, even your taste buds will remember your Monkey River Tour.

Where in Belize is it located?

Monkey River Village is located in southern Belize’s Toledo District , in close proximity to towns like Placencia Village and Punta Gorda Town.

belize river tour

The best time to go

Since the monkeys stick around 12 months of the year, humans eager to see them can show up in Belize year-round, too. Given river access that’s required to get to your destination, it stands to reason that if there’s flooding during the green season, the trip could be a bit more thrilling, but that doesn’t mean tours are cancelled just because it rains!

Best way to get here

If you’ve a car, a map and/or a GPS system, your resort host can point you in the direction of the monkeys from anywhere in southern Belize. No worries about parking. There’s not a single car in the village which has only two streets, so it’s impossible to get lost in Monkey River Village. You can also get here by taking a 15-mile boat ride to the mouth of the Monkey River and then hike to the village. If you’re traveling from other areas in Belize, a tour service is your best bet.

Best way to experience Monkey River Tours

The most highly-recommended way to take a Monkey River Tour is to book a registered tour guide who is well-versed in the area’s animals, people and landscape. Wear hiking shoes to avoid surprises and long pants to protect you from bug bites and thorns. If you intend to swim in the river, bring a suit and don’t leave your sunglasses, sunscreen and hat back at your resort in your excitement. You’ll travel by boat and by foot through forest and along trails to reach Howler Monkey nirvana where you can let loose frustrations by howling at the simians. Travelers tell us that shouting at monkeys is better than therapy and these primates never send a bill!

Explore the Exotic Beauty of the Old Belize River

Explore the Exotic Beauty of the Old Belize River

Rivers are not static objects like mountains or valleys that change little with time. Instead, pristine watercourses like the Old Belize River offer a dynamic experience every time you explore them. Boat tours of this beautiful river allow travelers to see nature at its finest in one of the most beautiful wild areas of the country.

For as long as humanity has lived in Belize, the Old Belize River has played an important role. The ancient Maya used the river as an important node in its vast trade network as the Old Belize River connects to two other essential watercourses, the Macal and Mopan Rivers. When the Spanish arrived in the 17th century, they too realized that the Old Belize River was an important transportation route.

belize river tour

One of the best ways to learn more about this amazing river is by participating in a boat tour. Along the banks of the Old Belize River, you’ll never know what kind of nature you encounter. Crocodiles, monkeys, giant iguanas, manatees, and dozens of bird species live along its banks. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a reclusive jaguar coming down to the river in order to drink.

Black Orchid Resort, located on the banks of the Old Belize River in the village of Burrell Boom, offers three daily boat tours of the river.

  • Morning tour – Departs at 10:00 AM.
  • Sunset tour – Departs at 4:00 PM.
  • Night tour – Departs at 8:30 PM.

The morning tour is a great way to see birds and other animals which are active during the day. The sunset tour is perhaps the most popular as it gives participants a chance to see the “night shift” take over. Approximately 80% of the animals in the jungle are nocturnal. The night tour is great for participants who want to see some of the most elusive animals in the area, including crocodiles and jaguars.

The duration of boat tours on the Old Belize River is between one and a half hours to two hours, depending on environmental conditions.

If you’d like to explore the Old Belize River, book your tour with Black Orchid Resort .

Everything surpassed our expectations. We came here as new diver because we wanted an operation we could trust and we found that here.

This is my 6th Belize dive adventure in the past 18 years and my best ALL around experience.

I’ve been to quite a few dive resorts. Hamanasi is hands down, the best so far. Thank you for a wonderful time.

Just keep doing what you’re doing… The Mayan tour history was incredible; the guide was extremely knowledgeable and profoundly connected to his heritage.

We appreciate that Hamanasi is able to provide exceptional experience for visitors while working to maintain the wonder of Belize.

Inland Eco-Adventure Tours

Below is a list and description of tours available from BRL.

Note:   Birding is great all around Belize as the habitat is very varied, from the swamp and mangrove coastlines to the hills and rain forest inland. No matter where you go, there are birds to see!  All of BRL’s tours offer spectacular birding opportunities as some of the best Belize bird watching sites are found close to other great attractions. If your interests are birds, let us know when you book your tour package, so that we schedule you a guide with more of a birding focus. As you read about the following tours, keep in mind that on most of the tours, the primary focus can be the birds of Belize.

{Central Belize, Inland} ALTUN HA Maya Site, COMMUNITY BABOON Sanctuary & BELIZE OLDE RIVER : Start the day with a ride on the old Northern highway (one lane) to Altun Ha which was a major trading center during the Maya Classic Period. Hike through the Bermundian Landing sanctuary and see the howler monkey in their natural habitat. Finish the day, with a boat ride on our Belize Olde River was the mainstream of activity for the first European settlers, who used the river to transport logwood & mahogany.  Settlements along the river still bear the names of those who first staked out claims & worked the area.  Crocodiles, iguanas, many species of birds, snakes, turtles, howler monkeys, possibly a manatee, & the flora of the area are also attractions on this tour.   *  If you are an angler the late afternoon is a good time to find the rolling baby tarpon, so your guide will have a light weight rod on board as an “in case”. (Requested Favorite of Guests)

{Central Belize, Inland} ALTUN HA Maya Site & BELIZE CITY :  Altun Ha, “ Rockstone Water “, is the nearest major Maya ruin from the Lodge. Altun Ha was a major trading center during the Classic Period and it was occupied from as early as B.C 900 to about A.D. 1000. Belize City is the old capital of British Honduras and is situated on the coast & is surrounded by mangroves. It is still the busiest & largest population center of Belize. The Swing Bridge, St. John’s Cathedral, Foreshore, Courthouse, Baron Bliss Lighthouse, & Princess Margaret Drive are areas of interest, some dating from Colonial days. You will also have a chance to visit the Old Majesty’s Prison which has been converted into a wonderful museum, displaying Maya artifacts and a collection of photos of British Honduras along with the logging days. This is also a great time to souvenir shop.

{Central Belize, Inland} CROOKED TREE WILDLIFE Sanctuary & ALTUN HA Maya Site :   An exceptional birding day! Crooked tree, a national protected area of natural wetlands, is a quaint village surrounded by a series on lagoons (Revenge Lagoon, Northern Lagoon, Western Lagoon and Spanish Creek) and is actually an inland island. Covered in mango and cashew trees, Crooked Tree is home to over 300 species of birds, and known as a Jabiru nesting area. Birding can be enjoyed by walking around the village or by boat. Continue on to Altun Ha Maya temples, a major trading center during the Classic Period. Altun Ha was occupied from as early as B.C 900 to about A.D. 1000. Altun Ha is made up of two central plazas surrounded by temples. Lamanai was one of the longest occupied sites in the MundoMaya world as it was continuously occupied for over 3,000 years and well beyond most other Maya sites, until at least 1,650 AD. Lamanai also has a very interesting museum and is another great birding site due to the surrounding tropical rainforest.  Note:  Once you get the boat, the tour is open to other people who the boat captains have booked, not a fully private tour. La Milpa has a large Great Plaza surrounded by 80ft pyraminds, still covered by jungle and inhabited by natural flora and fauna, creating a great medicinal trail. La Milpa/Rio Bravo is one of Belize’s Maya wonders and great for birding along the many nature trails. (Get ready to hike and explore!)

{Northern Belize, OW & Czl} CERROS Maya site & CUELLO : Start out and head north through the Orange Walk District, into Corozal.  The Mayan temples of Cerros (S panish Hill), overlooks the Chetumal Bay and was an important trading center (mainly sea-borne import of jade and obsidian) during the late pre-Classic period. Cerros is only about 53 acres and offers a great tour as it contains five temples, plazas and  two ball courts. The site is located on a peninsula at the mouth of the New River which empties into Chetumal Bay and is partially underwater. Cerros was covered by jungle and is still surrounded by jungle trails offering great birding opportunities.  Backtracking to Orange Walk and to the Cuello Maya site. Cuello is located between the Rio Hondo and New River, set on high ground, and is one of the oldest settled societies in Mesoamerica, dating back to 2400 B.C. Cuello takes its name from the current landowners, the Cuello family. Cuello shows an early transformation from a farming community to a ceremonial center. The site occupies the compound of the local rum distillery of the same name and is a cattle farm.

{Western Belize} BEST OF THE WEST ( Belize Zoo, Xunantunich Maya Site & Cahal Pech Maya Site): Start the day with a stop at the Belize Zoo and visit many of Belize’s native animals, birds and wildlife.  Belize Zoo sits upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 150 animals, representing over 45 species; all native to Belize. The zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo or rehabilitated animals.  It is a wonderful zoo with a “don’t miss” opportunity to see all the cats of Belize, including the Jaguars! Continue on to Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock), which was a major ceremonial Mayan site during the classic period and most of the structures here date from about 200 to 900 AD.  Climb to the top of El Castillo, the largest temple of this site and gaze across the expanse of the remains of this great Maya City.  If time allows in your day, travel to Cahal Pech (Place of the Tick), which is a beautifully restored elite Maya family residential area, located near the town of San Iganacio.   Most construction dates to the Classic period, however, evidence shows continuous habitation as far back as 1200 BC, making Cahal Pech one of the oldest recognizably Maya sites in Western Belize.  Walk through the archways and plazas and see how the Maya lived.  Both Xunantunich and Cahal Pech are excellent birding sites and home to many species of birds including the Blue Crowned MotMot.  (Requested Favorite of Guests)

(A little earlier departure from the Lodge may be needed as tour site is about a 2 to 2.5 hour drive from BRL. You will travel the Hummingbird Highway is a beautiful drive. Hike is moderate Fitness level and can include climbing, rappelling and maybe swimming.)

{Southern Belize} TIGER FERN HIKE by Maya Center Village : Tiger Fern trail is one of a number of trails in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and a part of the Jaguar Preserve. Great for birding and you should see evidence of our beautiful jaguar. The Tiger Fern trail meanders through the jungle, leading up to a wonderful view of the Basin and Victoria Peak a few miles away. The trail then dips down and arrives at a double waterfall flowing into pools where you can take a refreshing swim.  (A little earlier departure from the Lodge may be needed as tour site is about a 3 hour drive from BRL. You will travel the Hummingbird Highway, a beautiful drive. Hike is listed as moderate to better fitness level and can include climbing, hiking and maybe swimming.)

{Western Belize} EL PILAR : (The Birder’s Paradise) A Mayan site that was built between 600 BC & AD1000.  While El Pilar has been studied, the buildings have been left underground for conservation.  Because of this, the jungle has grown up & makes an ideal habitat for many beautiful birds.  It is a great place to see the Keel-Billed Toucan, the Blue-crowned Motmot, the Rufous-tailed Jacamar & many others in their natural environment.

{Western Belize} JUNGLE GOLFING, ST. HERMAN’S BLUE HOLE :  If you enjoy golf, then Belize has a new experience for you – a 9 hole “jungle” golf course.  Golf enthusiasts will understand the following, written by BRL guest Rich after he enjoyed an afternoon on the green – “ 9 holes, 2 sets of T-boxes, Par 32 1933 yards + 1959 yards = 3892 yards.  Five par 4’s, four par 3 holes.  It is a fun 9 hole holiday course.  Accuracy is required as fairways are narrow with small greens.  Greens are slow, requiring firm chips and putts. There are a few blind and obstructed second shots required.  Preferred lies and Astroturf tee boxes.”  Pullcarts, clubs, balls and tees available.  The course includes tropical birds flying overhead, a few ponds abounding with local wildlife, turtles and crocs – be careful of ball retrieval .”  After golfing and working up a sweat, enjoy a quick trip down the Hummingbird Highway, stopping at the inland Blue Hole, managed by the Belize Audubon.  This Blue Hole is a collapsed underground limestone cave.  It is fed by a river running through the original cavern system, and forms a sapphire-colored pool at the bottom of the cenote, where the cavern collapsed.   The pool measures about 100 feet deep and 300 feet in diameter, with the actual blue hole at the depression’s base having a depth of about 25 feet.  The inland Blue Hole offers a cool place to swim, relax and cool down before heading back to the Lodge.

REMEMBER . . . BIRDING :  Birding is great all around Belize as the habitat is very varied, from the swamp and mangrove coastlines to the hills and rain forest inland. Note: With over 500 birds in Belize, over 110 have been seen on or around the Belize River Lodge property, so you can start your birding adventure right at the Lodge, before breakfast

Other tours are available (listed below) however these are not included in regular priced packages quoted. Please contact us for current pricing.

{Central Belize, Caribbean Sea and Barrier Reef} ** SCUBA DIVING :  Explore the reef from the bottom up!  Dive amid the coral of Belize’s Barrier Reef, swimming with tropical fishes and among beautiful coral. Certified divers only (need to have taken a dive in the last 2 years).  Note:  BRL does not operate dive tours, we rendezvous with reputable dive shops who provide this service.

{Southern Belize} ** LUBANTUN Maya Site & NIM LI PUNIT Maya Site :  Depart the Lodge about 7:00 am to catch a flight to Punta Gorda (PG) in Southern Belize.  Arriving in PG about 9:00 am, you will be met by a tour guide to begin your Southern Belize journey.  A forty five minute drive will take you to the Mayan site of Nim Li Punit, located in Indian Creek Village.  Nim Li Punit is a medium sized site from the Classic Period consisting of structures surrounding three plazas including a number of carved stelae.  Nim Li Punit has an onsite museum.  After Nim Li Punit you will enjoy lunch and continue your journey to nearby San Pedro Columbia Village, where you will discover the Mayan Temples of Lubaantun, the biggest Mayan archeological site in Southern Belize.  Lubaantun dates from the Maya Classic era and the architecture is somewhat unusual compared to typical Belize classical central lowland Maya sites.  While visiting Southern Belize, and as you walk along ancient structures and stelae, don’t forget to stop and enjoy the spectacular views of PG.  Both Mayan sites have a large variety of birds so be on the lookout for any wildlife you may encounter during your tour.   Your guide will have you back at the PG airport for 4:00/4:15 pm to check your flight to Belize City, where you will be met by a BRL staff member and transferred to the Lodge.  (Continental breakfast and an early departure from the Lodge is required to make the tour in time.  Also, this tour is not included in regular tour pricing due to variation in flight prices from PGIA to PG. How To Make The Most Of Your Time During A Cruise Port Of Call In Belize

B elize, a beautiful Central American country sandwiched between Mexico and Guatemala, is one of the hottest cruise ports of call on western Caribbean routes. With its incredible shoreline, dense jungles, and rich history, there’s no shortage of things to see, do, and experience while you’re stopped at port. We had just 8 hours there during our own cruise, but they were jam-packed. Here’s how we spent our time and what we’d love to check out on our next visit.

Guided Coach Tour

The sea surrounding Belize City is quite shallow, so we were tendered from our cruise ship to the port. It was a quick trip, but it allowed us to get a great view. Candy-colored buildings, businesses, and homes dotted the oceanside, and we were glad we’d reserved a bit of extra time at the end of the day to explore the historic city center. We made our way through the shops at the port (more on those later!), met our guide, and hopped on our motor coach. We were ready for an adventure .

We were headed to an area deep in the rainforest called Jaguar Paw, about 90 minutes from Belize City. It was an easy ride on fully paved roads and allowed us to view first-hand several of Belize’s ecosystems.

At first along the shoreline, we spotted thick mangroves, which help prevent erosion during storms and provide a stunning — and somewhat foreboding — backdrop for kayakers. As we headed inland, the land changed dramatically. The plants grew scrubbier, with widely spaced pine trees taking the place of palms. The soil was a rich red, and it was clearly much drier. Our guide let us know we had entered Belize’s savannah, or grasslands. It was quite remote; we only passed a couple of tiny villages before another scenic shift. The tree canopy closed, getting greener and thicker. We realized we were entering the rainforest, and after about 20 minutes, we reached our destination: the Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archeological Reserve , along the Jaguar Paw section of the Caves Branch River.

Rainforest Hike

We got off the bus, applied lots of sunscreen and bug spray that we’d brought from the cruise ship, and grabbed lightweight inner tubes from our guide. It was time for a hike through the Belizean rainforest, right along the river. A gravel trail took us deep into the jungle, and during the trek our guide told us about the Mayans who lived in the area hundreds of years ago. The land and river were sacred to them, as were some of the animals there, including the jaguar, puma, and ocelot. Our guide also pointed out various medicinal plants and trees. We saw tiny but mighty leafcutter ants marching across the trail, and enormous spiders. After about 45 minutes, we reached the spot where we’d begin our float, right through caves that the Mayans once used.

Mayan Cave Adventure

We put on life jackets, donned helmets with lights on them, and then entered the river in a shallow spot. The water was clear and cool, a welcome respite after the warm jungle stroll. Our guide tied our tubes together and explained more about the history of this special place as we slowly and effortlessly floated along. The area’s limestone caves were carved out by the river millions of years ago, and the Mayans used them for ceremonial purposes. As our tubes passed in and out of the three main caverns, the lights on our helmets helped light the way. We were warned repeatedly not to look up with our mouths open, since the bats gathered near the top of the cave tend to poop on tourists below!

While other Belize cave sites, such as Actun Tunichil Muknal , are home to more archaeological discoveries — including pottery and even the skeletons of sacrifice victims — ours was still a fascinating and rather eerie experience. Our guide explained how the caves sheltered the Mayans and played a role in their worship and sacrifice.

Once we cleared the caves, we had a few minutes to swim before we had to return the way we came. It was an unbelievable — and surprisingly relaxing — float. We learned an incredible amount, both about the ecosystems and ancient cultures of Belize.

Tour Of Historic Belize City

On our way back to the cruise port, our driver took us on a quick tour of the historic part of Belize City. During the ride, we saw the island’s Colonial roots on full display. The Brits first arrived in Belize in the 1650s, and Belize became a British colony in 1840. Full independence wasn’t achieved until 1981. We drove by the candy-cane-striped Baron Bliss Lighthouse , named after the British aristocrat buried at its base who left his fortune to the people of Belize. On Regent Street, we spied the Supreme Court of Belize , a gorgeous New Orleans-style structure, and Saint John’s Cathedral , which was constructed in 1812. We were grateful to have had this brief introduction to the historic part of the city during such a busy day.

Eating In Belize

While we were tubing, our driver and his assistant went to work cooking up a traditional Belizean lunch. While Belize City looks quite British, the country’s heart is Creole, with European, African, and Mayan roots. This cultural mash-up is easily apparent in the country’s cuisine. We feasted on grilled jerk chicken, with its spicy, smoky flavor, and red beans and rice, well seasoned with a variety of peppers and hot sauces. The area’s tropical fruit was also amazing: The mangos and papayas were our favorites.

When we arrived back at the cruise port, we had some time to sample other street foods. The salbutes — tiny fried tortillas served with pulled chicken, pork, and avocados — were really tasty, as were the tamales wrapped in plantain leaves. Fresh-caught fish was served up with plenty of lime juice and chilis for a delicious, zippy ceviche. We washed these all down with ice-cold Belikin beers made by the Belize Brewing Company. Needless to say, we were absolutely stuffed by the time we headed back to our ship’s tender.

Shopping In Belize

There were plenty of high-end shopping options near the port in Belize City. There were also a number of handicraft shops in the Fort Street Tourism Village; we saw some stunning and sustainably crafted wooden kitchenware there, including salad bowls and cutting boards. However, we did most of our shopping just outside the Caves Branch Archeological Reserve at the end of our float. Local artisans had set their wares out for us to peruse, and we purchased a small Mayan-woven jute basket and some sweet shell jewelry. They were items we could easily bring back on the ship and stash in our luggage; perfect reminders of our Belize adventure.

Next Time Around

There were several places we wished we had had time to explore, but we had to skip. If we return to Belize (which we really hope to do), we would make plans to visit these places.

About 45 minutes from the port, the Belize Zoo features many animals native to the country, including big cats, colorful birds, and weirdly adorable tapirs. It’s small but beautifully curated, providing care and shelter for animals rescued from illegal trading or those transferred from rehab facilities. The zoo gets rave online reviews. VIP tours are also available.

Mayan Ruins

We had booked an archeological tour at a different port of call, but Belize has its fair share of magnificent Mayan sites. Consider touring Altun Ha , an ancient city north of Belize City where a mysterious and gorgeous jade head was discovered by scientists excavating the site in the 1960s. Caracol is another terrific option. While farther afield (about a 3.5-hour drive from Belize City), it’s the largest Mayan site in the country, with plenty of pyramids to explore deep in the jungle.

Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

Belize is well known for its snorkel and scuba scene ; its spectacular barrier reef is the world’s second-largest and a UNESCO World Heritage site . Many marine creatures make it their home, and they are absolutely stunning to observe in their natural habitat. Your best bet is to hire a charter or take a tour to get to these sites . For land-based over-the-top thrill-seekers, the famed Blue Hole sinkhole sits 40 miles from the coast and offers bucket-list diving and snorkeling opportunities.
