London’s best Thames river cruises

Get a whole new perspective of the city with these top Thames river cruises

Think you’ve ticked off everything London has to offer? Think again. Try a Thames river cruise – and no, we’re not talking about the Clippers (well we are, but only a little bit). There are few better ways to take in the capital than by its famously choppy, murky central waterway. Plus the views, from Hampton Court down to the City and Greenwich, are some of the absolute finest our city has to offer.

It's time to ditch dry land and hop aboard a Thames river boat tour. And plenty of London’s top attractions are best seen from the water – so get your camera ready.

Best Thames river cruises in London

Thames Rockets

Thames Rockets

  • Ships and boats

Bring your waterproofs, because the slick RIB (rigid inflatable boat) operation offers a high-speed ride on the Thames. It's a great way to discover how exhilarating it can be to swoop along the Thames at almost 30 knots – that’s nearly 35 mph, nautical novices! We're not sure how much you'll actually be able to see, but there are plenty more leisurely-paced tours for that sorta thing.

Bateaux London Cruises

Bateaux London Cruises

  • Victoria Embankment

A good river cruise for those who want a spot of grub while taking in the sights along the Thames – Bateaux offer a full range of different dining cruises. There’s the lunch, afternoon tea and dinner cruise – or you could really pull the stops out and enjoy their three-course lunch with a live jazz band playing assorted swingin’ classics. All river cruises depart from Victoria Embankment.

City Cruises

City Cruises

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours

Want to see the city in style? City cruises operate on a hop-on, hop-off basis and run from Westminster, Waterloo, Tower and Greenwich Piers with commentary along the way. All the departure points are convenient for the city’s various sights, with Greenwich Pier ideal for the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory.

London Duck Tours

London Duck Tours

Praise whichever brilliant mind decided to paint the scant remaining WW2 landing vehicles in bright, rubber-duck yellow! These duck city tours take in all the typical land-based sights – then has two ‘splashdowns’ into the Thames as it goes into nautical mode and takes passengers around Docklands, Canary Wharf and Greenwich.

Thames RIB Experience

Thames RIB Experience

  • Sightseeing

Instead of a usual tour’s drab history lessons and endless stream of tedious facts, why not try something a little more thrilling? The Thames RIB Experience is more like a rollercoaster than a classic sightseeing tour, and sees passengers jetted across the water at an impressive 45mph. Lifejackets and waterproofs are provided (fortunately), leaving you free to enjoy whizzing around in figure-eights in open water between Tower Bridge and the Isle of Dogs. Try and take in some sights as the high winds reshape your face.

Thames River Boats

Thames River Boats

Thames River Boats take you all the way from the Palace of Westminster upriver to Hampton Court Palace. It’s a pretty leisurely 22-mile journey: in 90 minutes you’ll be at Kew; in another 90, you’ll be at Hampton Court. But this westward route is a lovely way to appreciate the Thames, as the banks get greener, less cluttered with high-rise buildings and the river buses are replaced by rowers.

Thames Clippers

Thames Clippers

These days the Thames Clippers are better known as ‘Uber Boats’, not because they’re the most incredible boats but because, you guessed it, they’re sponsored by a taxi company. Sure, they don’t go very fast (trundling along at a very leisurely 30mph), but they’re a pretty underrated, cost-effective way to traverse the Thames.

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Why choose between the road and the river when you can have both? First up on this guided tour you'll be driven round the capital in a routemaster (that's the old red double decker bus), before boarding a Thames Cruiser to view the sites from the water. Sail past landmarks like Shakespeare's Globe and Tower Bridge, before getting back on the bus and heading to her Maj's residence: Buckingham Palace. There's also the option to add a ticket for the London Eye on this package.

Tate to Tate Boat

Tate to Tate Boat

A connecting service between either art institution, the Tate to Tate Boat runs every 40 minutes. Aside from getting you from one gallery to another, it’s also great for taking in lots of central London scenery. As you might expect, the boat itself is an arty affair: YBA Damien Hirst covered both the exterior and interior with his trademark spots. It’s also genuinely the quickest way to travel from Tate to Tate – this way, you avoid an irritatingly convoluted tube or bus journey.

There are also options for vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free and Halal requirements!

9 Cruises To Experience On The River Thames

best river cruises in london

  • Cruises and Sailing

  • River Cruises
  • Types of Travel
  • United Kingdom

London is a river city. The broad River Thames enters from the west and curves its way through the metropolis to the North Sea. En route, it passes glass and steel urban London, green parks, and former riverside villages.

The river used to be London’s highway. It still is, for some. You can use riverboats within the Transport for London River Bus system as part of your tourist day. The Westminster Pier to the Tower of London is a nice ride.

For something fancier — maybe including a meal, entertainment, or a guided tour — there are private services to choose from.

The routes and features change from time to time. Visit London and Transport for London are good starting points for up-to-date information. The Transport for London site has multiple pages about river travel, including The River Experience , with details of how to get to a number of popular attractions by boat.

The view from the River Thames reveals history and some spectacles of modern life.

After-dark cruises show off the artistic lighting on the growing number of bridges included in the Illuminated River , a long-term project that will eventually feature 14 bridges.

When you’re strolling along the river and pass by one of the piers, take a look at the schedules. Remember that these can change according to the tide or weather conditions.

Here are some of the best river cruises on which to experience the River Thames.

The Tate Modern in London.

1. Tate To Tate Cruise

The Tate Modern and the Tate Britain are two of London’s best-loved art galleries. You can travel between them by bus or Tube, but the boat is more fun.

The journey between the Bankside Pier and the Millbank Pier via the Thames Clippers service takes about half an hour. Check the Tate Boat website for current information and tour possibilities.

To do a little local exploring, from the Tate Modern, see the Bankside district on foot or cross the Millennium Bridge to reach Saint Paul’s Cathedral. You may see licensed mudlarkers exploring the foreshore at low tide.

From the Tate Britain, you can take the bus or walk about 15 minutes to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.

2. All-Day Red Rover Hop-On, Hop-Off Cruise

City Cruises offers a hop-on, hop-off cruise connecting three piers: Westminster, London Eye, and Tower. The ticket is good for 24 hours, and the onboard commentary lets you know what you’re passing.

3. Thames River Dinner Cruises

Several companies offer boat rides plus a meal. These dinner cruises advertise tempting menus served with a view. A cruise with a meal may need to be booked in advance.

Maritime Greenwich as seen from the River Thames.

4. Sunday And Special Occasion Cruises

Viscount Cruises operates a long-established 2-hour Sunday evening cruise starting and ending at Greenwich. It runs from May through September and offers a chance to see Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage site , from the water.

Be sure to allow time to explore Greenwich by day, too. The National Maritime Museum , Royal Observatory , Saint Alfege Church , and Cutty Sark are just some of the attractions of this historic seaside town. Greenwich also has a pedestrian tunnel underneath the Thames. The entrance is close to the Cutty Sark .

On special occasions, like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, there may be themed cruises. In the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is called Mothering Sunday and falls three weeks before Easter.

5. Bonfire Cruises

Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Day, is officially on November 5, but the actual lighting of fireworks is no longer confined to one night. Some companies offer special Bonfire Night cruises to see the fireworks at Battersea Park.

6. James Bond-Style Cruises

Fans of 007 will remember him zipping down the Thames in a speedboat. If you’re all about adrenaline, the rigid inflatable boat experience might be for you. Try it as a stand-alone trip or as a 45-minute ride combined with a 3-hour land tour of James Bond-connected locations .

The Woolwich Ferry crossing the River Thames.

jean.cuomo / Shutterstock

7. Free Woolwich Ferry

Woolwich isn’t high on most tourists’ agendas, but if you like history, I would recommend the Royal Arsenal area. This was, for centuries, a key military establishment, housing the Royal Dockyard, the Royal Arsenal, the Royal Military Academy, and more.

Today, many of the buildings and spaces are being repurposed as part of an ambitious urban redevelopment project. I love exploring this site, with its historic buildings, waterfront, and (to my surprise) an installation of Antony Gormley’s art.

The Royal Arsenal is where the famous Arsenal Football Club started. There’s even a bronze monument of a soccer ball near the Dial Arch pub to commemorate this.

You can combine a visit to the Royal Arsenal development with a cross-river ride on the free Woolwich Ferry . If the ferry isn’t running, there’s another unique way to cross. Try the Woolwich Foot Tunnel under the Thames.

The Thames Barrier in London.

BBA Photography / Shutterstock

8. Thames Barrier Cruise

Unlike other sights you can see from the water, the Thames Barrier is in the water. Downstream from Greenwich, the barrier was completed in 1982 to protect London from flooding. This is an amazing work of engineering and construction.

Thames River Sightseeing is one company offering a boat tour to the Thames Barrier.

Hampton Court Palace in London.

9. Hampton Court Palace By Boat Cruise

London is much bigger than the touristy sections. A ride upstream will show you places you’re not likely to see in a completely land-based visit. You can make this journey in either direction.

This trip is not for everyone — the trip from Westminster Pier to Hampton Court Palace by boat can take 4 hours! The time varies depending on the tide . The River Thames is tidal as far as Teddington Lock. I love the long ride, but if you want to get from Point A to Point B quickly, this is not the way.

For a shorter cruise, Turks runs boats from Richmond upon Thames through the lock and then to Kingston upon Thames and on to Hampton Court Palace.

Starting from Westminster Pier, one of the first sights to look out for is the Palace of Westminster, usually called the Houses of Parliament. Other notable buildings in the area are the Thames House, home of MI5, by the Lambeth Bridge, and the MI6 building before the Vauxhall Bridge.

The massive Battersea Power Station, with its four towers, is being redeveloped for housing and shops.

From Putney Bridge to Mortlake is the Boat Race course. Rowers of all abilities practice on the Thames in all kinds of weather on this stretch.

At Hammersmith, there’s an elegant Victorian suspension bridge and some popular pubs right along the river.

From here upstream are some of the best views of old riverside London, not yet concealed and altered by modern developments.

The Kew Gardens in London.

Alexey Fedorenko / Shutterstock

At Kew Pier, the boat may stop for visitors to the world-famous Kew Gardens . The red brick building with many chimneys is Kew Palace, a former home of King George III and one of London’s Historic Royal Palaces .

The village of Isleworth, with its square church tower and London Apprentice pub, has been a favorite subject of artists, including J. M. W. Turner .

After the Richmond Lock, the boat may also stop at Richmond. The White Cross pub just before the bridge has a special high-tide door for when the regular door is underwater.

After Richmond, you’ll spot several historic houses, including Ham House, Marble Hill House, and Orleans House. The hidden remnants of Alexander Pope’s Grotto are just past Eel Pie Island.

Passing through Teddington Lock is always an adventure. The water level changes by about 9 feet. After Kingston, Hampton Court Palace itself comes into view, just as it did for King Henry VIII when he accepted it as a gift from Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in 1529.

What To Know Before You Go

In addition to boats on the Thames, London has a network of canals, a reminder of its industrial heritage. People use the canals for pleasure boating. Some even live year-round in canal boats! Canal trips run between Camden Lock and Paddington Basin. The Canal Museum has information about boat trips as well as the canals themselves.

Many boats on the Thames have on-deck seating, but not all.

The distinction between the River Bus and other boats can be confusing. The River Bus is part of the Transport for London system and accepts Oyster cards. Boats that don’t accept Oyster cards to board may still let you pay for a paper ticket using an Oyster card. I have always found the people working at the piers to be very helpful.

The Transport for London website explains the fares and has a downloadable map .

Prices and the length of the trip vary depending on what route you select.

There are a total of ten different tours offered out of Westminster, Greenwich, and St. Katharine's.

Additionally, this boat tour company provides transportation to popular sightseeing locations such as the Thames Barrier and the Tower of London.

Guests have the option to pay for a one-way ticket or round-trip fare as well as a hop-on, hop-off ticket (through Circular Cruises).

This route on the Thames Clippers service is the "RB2 Tate to Tate".

The boats have both outdoor and indoor seating. As this is not a sightseeing boat there is no live commentary.

It is, however, a great way to get out onto the water and move quickly between museums and their surrounding neighborhoods.

You can purchase tickets in advance online from the Tate Shop website , or before you board a boat from a self-serve kiosk on the pier.

You can also use your  Oyster card , if you have one, upon boarding the boat.

When you purchase, look for the RB2 service, a central zone ticket price.

Tips From Locals and Travelers

Thankfully, many members of our London Travel Tips group on Facebook will offer their own thoughts on these cruise companies, and we've included some of their most helpful suggestions here.

best river cruises in london

It can get pretty cold in London during the winter, so travelers might be surprised to learn that they actually do keep most of the Thames River cruises open all year.

While it can get cold, pretty much every company uses boats with an indoor area where you can stay warm as you enjoy the ride.

best river cruises in london

Even so, it is recommended to bundle up during the winter anyways, so you shouldn't be too cold on a river cruise boat as long as you wear warm clothing.

best river cruises in london

A lot of locals recommend using the Uber Boat, because it's a very easy and consistent service and it offers stops all along the Thames, even in Greenwich.

best river cruises in london

The reason this river cruise boat is so popular is because it's often used as transportation by people who live in London, and in fact they rely upon these boats to get to and from work.

Locals also note that you can pay for the Uber Boat by using an Oyster Card, and they offer discounts for card holders.

Even better, once you get past the Tower Bridge, the boat will speed up and allow you to get around the city much quicker!

best river cruises in london

If you're wondering whether to take a hop-on hop-off tour on the river or a dinner cruise, it's worth noting that the dinner cruise does not include any commentary.

Travelers who want to learn more about the city while cruising down the Thames might not enjoy the dinner cruise as much, but it's still a great service for anyone who wants to enjoy the view of London as the sun is setting!

Other travelers suggest skipping the dinner cruise and hopping on the speed boat. As Trish notes, these boats will wait until they are in clear waters and take off at thrilling speeds!

Fares and routes for River Bus Cruises

The best route on the River Bus for sightseeing is the RB1 commuter service route, which covers the stretch of the river from London Eye to Greenwich. It has the following stops: London Eye – Embankment – Blackfriars – Bankside – London Bridge – Tower Bridge – Canary Wharf – Greenland – Masthouse Terrace – Greenwich – North Greenwich.

On this route, you will pass iconic places like Big Ben, the London Eye, Shakespeare’s Globe, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and Greenwich. River Bus service: Buying tickets, prices and transport cards

To hop aboard a River Bus you can either buy your ticket online in advance or buy one at the ticket office. If the ticket office is closed you can buy a ticket on board. As the river bus is part of London’s Transport system, you can use your oyster card to pay as you go or your contactless card to use the service.

Roamer Ticket Prices

A roamer ticket gives you the option to hop on and hop off the River Bus all day. The prices for this roamer ticket are:

Adult: £19.50 Child (5-15): £9.75

Prices for the hop-on hop-off sightseeing river cruise are £ 18.75 adults and £12 child. When comparing prices,  you’ll see that the ticket prices for the river roamer ticket and the sightseeing cruise are actually very similar. But I think you get a lot more out of a sightseeing cruise. It is a much more enjoyable experience, as you have a tour guide explaining what you are seeing, and you can enjoy the cruise on the deck outside if the weather is nice.

You can also look at the city cruises website for more ticket options.

You can also use your Oyster Card on the River Bus services. I admit it: I love being in places on the water. Taking a relaxing trip on the Thames while admiring the skyline of London is a must for me when I am visiting the city. This way I can have magnificent views of the London Eye or the Tower of London. However, due to the high diversity of tours, people often ask me which Thames River Cruises are the best. That’s why we have created this guide to tell you the main differences between the most popular tours. Choose the tour you want wherever and whenever you want!

What do you get to see on a Thames River Cruise?

Before discussing the individual tours in more detail, we’d like to take a look at all the attractions located on the banks of the Thames that are visible from the water. The Thames is the longest river in London, and there are both long and short cruises available. Naturally, most of the round trips focus on the top landmarks. The following highlights can be seen on virtually all Thames cruises: Lambeth Bridge, the London Eye , Big Ben , the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, the National Theatre, Somerset House, the OXO Building, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge, Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe, London Bridge, The Shard , the HMS Belfast aircraft carrier, the Tower of London , City Hall, and  Tower Bridge .

Nearly all the cruises are round trips, so you don’t need to worry about which side of the boat to sit on. It doesn’t matter, as you’ll get to see everything either on the way out or the way back. In addition, there are a few cruises that head towards Greenwich. On the way to this somewhat quieter district, you’ll pass the old docks. A river cruise to Greenwich is undoubtedly one of the most convenient ways of exploring London. This explains why it’s also one of the most popular things to do in the city.

The most popular London river cruise

If you’re looking for a basic Thames river cruise in order to view the famous sights from the water, you may like to consider the options listed below. These superb, reasonably priced cruises with English commentary stop at all the most important places for tourists. All you need to do is decide whether you want to experience London from the boat by day or by night. It’s so romantic!

Money-saving options: Combination tickets including a river cruise

In our opinion, the combination of tickets that include a river cruise is really practical, as they offer two-fold advantages: they save both time and money if you’re only in London for a weekend, for example. Now I’d like to tell you about the river cruise combination tickets that cover the best attractions.

Thames River cruise + optional London Eye ticket

If you want my opinion, this is the best combination: the London Eye offers its own Thames River cruises , which are available either in combination with entry to the London Eye or separately. The London Eye River Cruises leave from the pier directly at the foot of the Ferris wheel, so this is an ideal way of combining the two activities.

Thames River Cruises

Price:  If you’re planning on visiting the London Eye and taking a river cruise, your best option is to buy the combination ticket for around 35 €. The river cruise alone costs approx. 15 €. With the combination ticket, you save quite a bit. Whether you decide to buy a ticket for a river cruise alone or a combination ticket, I can strongly recommend this cruise!

Why a Thames Sunset Cruise is worthwhile

For me, one of the great advantages of booking a Thames cruise is that you will be able to rest your tired legs a little bit after traveling tirelessly through a city with so much to do.

In addition, they are a saving of traffic jams that you can suffer in bus and crowds of people crowded on the subway. And the best thing is that they link two of the main tourist attractions of the city: the area of Westminster Abbey, where are the famous Big Ben and London Eye, with the areas of the City and St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London.

These cruises are ideal to get an overall idea of the appearance of the city or to see its monuments from another perspective. I recommend them especially if you are traveling with children as it is a fun and comfortable way to get an overall idea of what London is like and visit some of its main attractions.

Other interesting attractions in London

If you have already decided to take the cruise, my advice is to take the opportunity to visit the Westminster Abbey area, from where you can embark to start the boat tour.

Right there you will find the London Eye (this is the article I have written about London Eye Tickets: how to buy, prices and schedules ), a few meters away the Westminster Abbey (here all the information on London Westminster Abbey Tickets: how to buy and prices ) and the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.

If what interests you is to walk around the city and enjoy it understanding what you see, you can take a look at my article on Top 10 Tours and Excursions in London which can help you choose a good guided tour of the city where you will also learn the best kept secrets of the big city.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

best river cruises in london

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

best river cruises in london

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

best river cruises in london

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

best river cruises in london

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

best river cruises in london

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

best river cruises in london

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .
