Why Travel to the Colorful City of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua?

I absolutely love traveling to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua! I planned on coming for three days; I ended up staying for eight. I haven’t felt such a strong pull to a place in a long time. At times it almost felt like a time warp — traveling back to a time when I was a 26-year-old party girl, only now with modern technology like AirPods and Tinder.

Soon I discovered the best things to do in San Juan Del Sur, from sipping cocktails on a catamaran to hiking up to the Jesus Statue, and of course, enjoying the Sunday Funday pool crawl. This city has it going on!

But if there’s anything that struck me about San Juan immediately, it was that it was just so colorful. Nicaragua stunned me with its bright colors, but San Juan brought it to a new level, both naturally and creatively.

Should you travel to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua? Well, I’ll let you read the post. I warn you, though — soon you’ll be as bewitched by San Juan del Sur as I am.

Why Travel to San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua?

Nicaragua has long been cited as “the next Costa Rica” or “how Costa Rica used to be 20 years ago.” How true is it? Well, in some ways.

Nicaragua is a country filled with incredibly colorful cities, gorgeous beaches, unusual islands, fun activities, and wonderful people. And it doesn’t have the attention or infrastructure of Costa Rica — thus things are a lot cheaper, it tends to draw more adventurous travelers, and Nicaragua is more of a badge of honor.

Today, people primarily come to San Juan del Sur for two things: the beach scene and the party scene.

San Juan del Sur is a fun, beachside party town surrounded by excellent surfing beaches and mountains that carve out an unforgettable coastal view in Nicaragua.

You can spend your days horseback riding or taking a catamaran ride. You can spend your nights doing trivia, joining a pub crawl, or enjoying cocktails overlooking the sea.

If you’re looking for a happening, low-key beach town that attracts lots of twenty- and thirty-somethingss, San Juan is the place for you!

San Juan del Sur

Is San Juan del Sur safe?

Most people researching San Juan Del Sur want to know if the city is safe. The knee-jerk reaction to telling someone you’re visiting Nicaragua is, “It’s not safe!” And it didn’t help that Nicaragua faced civil unrest starting in April 2018, effectively grinding tourism to a near-halt.

As far as civil unrest goes, San Juan del Sur was never a target for violence, though often there would be blockades on the road there.

Today — I write this in February 2020 — Nicaragua has been becoming more peaceful and welcoming more and more tourism. I personally would not hesitate to visit now, though I would continue researching through my trip.

I encourage you to do research closer to your trip and find out the current situation. Avoid all political demonstrations — that’s good advice for anywhere — and know that the Nicaraguan flag has often been used as a protest symbol, so it would be wise to avoid displaying flags.

I recommend reading up on the UK’s travel advisory for Nicaragua — they tend to be more practical and less alarmist than US travel warnings.

Other than that, Nicaragua is similar to other Central American countries — as long as you do your research, stick to the tourist trail, and watch your belongings, you probably won’t have any safety issues.

The main concern for safety in San Juan Del Sur is petty theft. There are signs all over town that say “DO NOT GO ON BEACH AT NIGHT — YOU WILL GET ROB.” Absolutely avoid the beach at night. As a solo woman, I’m comfortable walking in the main part of the town at night, the part surrounded by restaurants and bars and guesthouses, but I wouldn’t walk alone in the outskirts of San Juan del Sur at night.

When choosing your hotel, I recommend choosing a place in the center of San Juan del Sur so you won’t have to walk into isolated areas at night. You can see my accommodation recommendations for all budgets further down.

Street harassment is insidious in Nicaragua . Unfortunately, I think Nicaragua has the worst street harassment out of the 80+ countries I’ve visited. Expect men to catcall you constantly. This is part of Nicaraguan culture. If you ignore them, though, it rarely escalates. It’s more of an annoyance than anything else.

For what it’s worth, I though the street harassment in San Juan del Sur wasn’t as bad as Granada or Léon.

Finally, San Juan del Sur is a party destination, and some people use this as an excuse to get insanely drunk. When you’re drunk, you’re at your most vulnerable. I recommend drinking far less than you would at home, or sticking to just two drinks over the course of an evening (and watching them like a hawk).

I s San Juan del Sur safe to visit? As long as you take increased precautions — do your research, keep an eye on your belongings, watch your drinking, lock up your valuables — chances are you’ll wonder what you were even worried about.

I think San Juan del Sur, and Nicaragua as a whole, are better suited for experienced travelers rather than newbies. If you haven’t traveled in the developing world yet, get your feet wet in Costa Rica or Belize first.

Best Things to Do in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

There is no shortage on cool things to do in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. However, there’s one important thing to know — while many people come to San Juan del Sur to surf, you can’t actually surf right in town. The beach here is calm; you couldn’t surf here if you tried.

If you’re looking to surf in San Juan del Sur, you’ll need to travel to one of the nearby surf beaches, like Playa Hermosa. Read on for more information on how to do that.

Hike to the Jesus statue

One of the world’s largest Jesus statues sits atop a hill overlooking San Juan del Sur. Hiking to the top is a perfect athletic activity for the day! And views at the top are spectacular — it’s one of my favorite places to pose for Instagram photos.

Hiking to the top requires walking up a very steep but paved road; if you have a car, you could drive most of the way. It’s a wonderful place to view golden hour and the sunset, but you’ll want to return to town before it gets too dark.

A beach near San Juan Del Sur, with still green water.

Visit the Surfing Beaches

San Juan’s beach isn’t that great — but the beaches outside town are incredible. Two of the most famous ones are Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa.

Both Maderas and Hermosa are fantastic places to surf, whether you’re experienced or a first-timer. Lessons are available on both beaches; you can rent boards there or through Casa Oro Eco Hostel. Shuttle transportation, which can accommodate surfboards, is available through Casa Oro.

If you’re a hardcore surfer, you may prefer staying in Playa Maderas or Playa Hermosa. But if you like to experience a variety of things, I’d recommend staying in San Juan del Sur instead and just taking the shuttles when you’re in a surfing mood.

Oh, and that photo above is fro my catamaran ride — you definitely can’t surf there!

Take a Yoga Class

It seems like every Central American beach town has an abundance of yoga classes, and San Juan del Sur is no exception. I took part in yoga at Zen Yoga . I found my all-levels class to be nice and relaxed, easy enough for first-timers but a decent workout for more hardcore yogis.

Before I got into fitness, I was self-conscious about being unable to hit certain poses in yoga — but I never felt awkward about it at Zen. The instructor corrected my posture discreetly and I immediately felt better.

In a party-heavy destination, it’s important to take time to center yourself. That’s why I think a yoga class is one of the best things to do in San Juan del Sur — it reduces stress and makes you feel peaceful.

The best part? Getting a fresh juice afterward and chatting with new friends from class.

San Juan del Sur Pub Crawl

Have you ever been to a Canadian bar before? Bugaboo Creek doesn’t count.

With so many Canadians in San Juan del Sur (seriously, I met more people from Saskatchewan in Nicaragua than I’ve met ever ), it’s only natural that a Canadian bar would pop up: The Loose Moose , complete with poutine on the menu, hockey on TV, antlers and maple leaves everywhere, and handheld masks of Harry and Lloyd from Dumb & Dumber (not sure why; the latter aren’t Canadian!).

When I wrote about traveling solo to a party destination , a pub crawl is the perfect way to get to know new people. The Loose Moose puts on regular pub crawls that visit several spots in town. Other bars have trivia nights, poker nights, and more.

Even if there isn’t a current pub crawl taking place, this is a good spot to have a few drinks and get to know some friendly Canadians.

Go Horseback Riding on the Beach

One of the most special things to do in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, is horseback riding on the beach. Rancho Chilamate offers a variety of horseback riding tours,

My friend Alex in Wanderland did this tour while we were in San Juan Del Sur and she came back gushing about how much fun she had. Alex has done a lot of horseback riding around the world — if she raves about something, you know it’s exceptional. I wish I had joined her.

The cowgirls who work on the ranch hail from around the world. They are fantastic, friendly, down-to-earth ladies and getting to know them was one of the highlights of my time in San Juan.

Kate and Alex sitting on the net of a Catamaran with a crew member in the background, in front of bright blue ocean.

Take a Catamaran Ride

Of all the things in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the catamaran ride was my favorite. All around town are signs for catamaran rides. I planned to save it as a reward after completing a big work goal, but soon some girls invited us to join them that day!

It includes the boat ride, all you can drink (the mai tais are nice!), snacks (ceviche made from fish caught during the cruise, as well as chips, guacamole, and salsa), a stop at a beautiful private beach for swimming and beach hanging (complete with a bag of beers that they throw at you, and the cruise ends during sunset.

Also, hilariously, there was a bathroom on board, but I’m pretty sure none of us used it.

If you’re traveling on your own and looking to meet new friends, this is yet another way to do so. I can’t imagine not making friends on this booze cruise! Ask your accommodation or look around town for signs; they’ll have the latest information on pricing.

Partiers clustered around a pool, surrounded by palm trees, at Sunday Funday in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Sunday Funday

Every week, San Juan has a legendary party — Sunday Funday ! It’s basically a pool party pub crawl that starts at about noon and goes until dawn, if you dare. Today it’s the most infamous party on the Central American backpacker trail.

This was the most visceral reminder of Vang Vieng — people in San Juan and throughout Nicaragua walk around in Sunday Funday tank tops, just like the In The Tubing tank tops in Laos.

You go to four different bars, including the Naked Tiger, which is outside town and perched on a hill overlooking the region. People get covered in body paint; drinking games are rampant; guys cross-dressing in skirts and bras jump into the pools fully clothed.

Was it fun? It was INSANELY fun. But I, the resident 30-year-old traveler among the twenty-somethings, was happily home in bed at 10:30 PM.

Eat Healthy Food

Many people who come to Central America eat nothing but comida tipico (some kind of protein, gallo pinto (rice and beans), plantains, maybe a bit of salad if you’re lucky) everywhere they go, especially if they’re on a tight budget. Frankly, it gets monotonous pretty quickly.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, is a great place to indulge in a bit of international cuisine and especially healthy cuisine.

Here are some of my favorite spots, all in the town center:

  • Taco Stop : Great tacos on the main strip. Don’t confuse it with the inferior Taco Spot on the same street.
  • Cerveceria : An actual brewery in San Juan del Sur! Good tacos and salads.
  • Bar Republik : Nice tacos (see a pattern here?) and nightly events at the bar.
  • Casa Oro : This hostel offers a free cooked breakfast every day, which is pretty rare. Breakfast tacos were the best!

Where to Stay in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

San Juan del Sur has accommodation for every budget! You get a lot for your money here, especially compared to beach towns in nearby Costa Rica. That might mean taking advantage of the cheapness and staying for longer (like I did!), or that might mean splashing out on a luxury rental you couldn’t afford elsewhere.

The most important consideration in where to stay in San Juan del Sur is the location of your accommodation. This could make or break your trip.

If you’re looking to spend most of your time in the town, and want to be walking distance to restaurants, bars, and shops, you should stay right in town.

But if you’re looking for peace and quiet, incredible views, and want to lounge by the pool, you may prefer staying in a rental further out of town, especially if you have a car.

For that reason, I’m going to recommend properties both in downtown San Juan del Sur and outside the main town. They are two totally different travel experiences.

If you’re looking for a luxury place to stay in San Juan del Sur and want to stay in town, I recommend staying at Hotel Victoriano . This hotel, built to look like a Victorian mansion, is right on the beach with views of the cliffs, has a pool overlooking the sea, and has easy access to all of San Juan del Sur.

If you’re looking for a luxury place to stay in San Juan del Sur and want to stay a bit outside town, I recommend staying at LACASA . This three-bedroom house is perhaps the most Instagrammable property in the region, a gorgeous modern building right in front of a pool and its own stretch of beach north of the city.

If you’re looking for a mid-range place to stay in San Juan del Sur and want to stay in town, I recommend staying at Barrio Cafe Hotel . This hotel is right in the heart of downtown with cute, clean and comfortable rooms. They’re well-known for their restaurant and bar.

If you’re looking for a mid-range place to stay in San Juan del Sur and want to stay a bit outside town, I recommend staying at El Jardín . This hotel has a gorgeous pool and views of the mountains leading down to the ocean. Rooms are simple and colorful, and it even has its own private beach.

If you’re looking for a budget place to stay in San Juan del Sur and want to stay in town, I recommend staying at Casa Oro Eco Hostel . I loved staying here — there are private rooms as well as dorms, a gorgeous lounge area with hammocks, shuttles to the surf beaches, an excellent breakfast, and it’s right in the heart of town.

If you’re looking for a budget place to stay in San Juan del Sur and want to stay in town, I recommend staying at Puk’s Palace . This hostel has private rooms as well as dorms, and you can enjoy a swimming pool, views over the mountains to the ocean, communal “family dinners,” and free shuttles to downtown San Juan del Sur.

Best Places to Stay in San Juan del Sur:

Luxury: Hotel Victoriano if you want to stay in town, LACASA if you want to stay outside town.

Mid-range: Barrio Cafe Hotel if you want to stay in town, El Jardín if you want to stay outside town.

Budget: Casa Oro Eco Hostel if you want to stay in town, Puk’s Palace if you want to stay outside town.

How to Get to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

If you look on the map, San Juan del Sur is very close to the Costa Rica border — so close that you might be tempted to fly into Liberia Airport in northwest Costa Rica.

I urge you not to do this. The border crossing from Costa Rica to Nicaragua is a huge hassle — it takes a long time, you have to walk a long way, and there’s little shade. It’s an ordeal and you’re better off avoiding it.

Instead, fly into Managua in Nicaragua. I recommend using Skyscanner to find the best prices on flights to Managua.

From there, you have several different ways to get to San Juan del Sur, a 2.5-hour driving journey.

Rent a Car in Nicaragua

Renting a car can be a good option in Nicaragua, but I think it’s essential if you’re staying in a property far from town. Being able to drive to the grocery store for provisions will make a huge difference in your travels!

If you want to save money on a car rental in Nicaragua, I recommend using RentalCars.com . They compare all the sites so you can find the best rates.

Book a private transfer from Managua Airport to San Juan del Sur

Booking a private transfer for a 2.5-hour journey might seem like a baller move — but in Nicaragua, it can be quite affordable. It’s the easiest way to get to San Juan del Sur — someone is waiting at the airport with your name on a sign, and you leave as soon as you’re ready.

Book a private transfer from Managua Airport to San Juan del Sur here.

You can also just ask a taxi driver at Managua Airport to drive you there. It’s a long journey, but most drivers will do it. (I took a taxi from Managua Airport to Léon, a similar distance from Managua.) You can expect to pay about $100.

Join a group shuttle from Managua Airport to San Juan del Sur

Group shuttles are my preferred way to travel in Central America — they are essentially small group transportation between two major tourism spots, saving you the time and hassle of public transportation.

A group shuttle from Managua Airport to San Juan del Sur will cost you roughly half the price of a private transfer. One company that does this is IskraTravel . Be sure to plan ahead, as most shuttle times are set in advance.

Take public transportation from Managua Airport to San Juan del Sur

I don’t recommend this. This is not a logical or direct route in Nicaragua and you’ll have to change buses multiple times while lugging your bags. Nicaragua is a cheap country; splurge on a group shuttle at least.

Best Time to Visit San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Most travelers to San Juan del Sur visit during North America’s winter months — from December through March. This is when you have some of the nicest weather in San Juan del Sur. Temperatures tend to range from a low of 76 F (24 C) to a high of 88 F (31 C).

High season in San Juan del Sur can be very crowded, and this is when accommodation is at its most expensive. If you’re planning a trip to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, between December and March, I recommend booking accommodation a few months in advance if you can.

The hottest months of the year in San Juan del Sur are April and May, where temperatures hit highs of around 91 F (33 C). If you don’t do well in heat, I wouldn’t recommend visiting during the spring months.

While the summer months, June through September, tend to be rainy in much of Central America, San Juan del Sur is a fairly dry region. It tends to rain the most during this time of year, but rainstorms tend to be infrequent and short-lived.

Hurricane season in Nicaragua runs from June through November, and you could get hit with hurricanes anytime during that period, but most are from August through November.

I’m a big fan of traveling to Nicaragua during high season — December to March. Even though this is the most crowded and expensive time of year, Nicaragua never gets THAT crowded or THAT expensive. And the weather is absolutely perfect. But overall, you can have a great visit to San Juan del Sur year-round.

Where Else to Go in Nicaragua

Should you limit your time to just San Juan del Sur? Not if you can help it! I adore Nicaragua — it’s my favorite country in Central America — and so many places in Nicaragua are stunning. I spent a full month there, but with a week you can see a cool place or two.

Here are some of my favorite spots in Nicaragua:

Ometepe. This mysterious volcano-topped island in a lake is a short journey from San Juan del Sur (too far to day trip, though. Learn more about what makes Ometepe wonderful here.

Granada. This picture-perfect colonial town is close to Managua, making it a good stop on the way to the airport. If you go, I loved spending a day at nearby Laguna de Apoyo.

Léon. Get a taste of the north with this wild, revolutionary city — not everyone’s taste, but definitely one for more experienced travelers and city lovers. Read more about Léon here.

Little Corn Island. This island in the Caribbean is one of my favorite islands on the planet — it’s tiny, low-key, friendly, and has the greatest vibe. Read more about Little Corn Island here.

Travel Insurance for San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

One last note — it’s absolutely vital to have travel insurance before traveling to Nicaragua.  If you get sick or injured on your trip, if you get robbed, or even if you have to be flown home for more care, travel insurance will protect you from financial ruin.  I use and recommend World Nomads for trips to Nicaragua.

Travel insurance will help you in your hour of need if you have an accident while surfing; they will help you get medical care if you come down with appendicitis or trip on a patch of uneven sidewalk and break an ankle; and if your flights get canceled due to hurricanes, you can get accommodation and new flights paid for.

HOWEVER — double-check and make sure that they will actually cover Nicaragua. Some policies stopped covering Nicaragua when the civil unrest began in 2018. This is something that changes constantly so you’ll need to check before you buy.

As always, be sure to read your policy carefully and make sure it’s a fit for you.  See what World Nomads covers here.

Local buses to San Juan del Sur Nicaragua

A common way to get around Nicaragua is by using local buses. Tourists often refer to these as chicken buses. Nicaragua public buses are old US yellow school buses that are often painted in bright colours. They have the destination on a sign at the front of the bus. Buses rarely leave on time, so patience is key. We also recommend that you ask about bus times at the station, particularly if you are considering a less regular route. Keep in mind that most locals, including local bus drivers, only speak Spanish.

Before the bus leaves as well as during the journey a number of vendors may get on the bus selling food and other goods. This is a great opportunity to get a snack for your trip or even do your grocery shopping.

An affordable but slightly more expensive alternative to buses in Nicaragua are microbuses or minivans. These vans generally seat around 10-15 people. They are more direct and generally only a few córdobas more expensive than buses. They usually leave when they are full and are also typically more frequent than buses. We personally think that buses are more comfortable than the minivans as people do get crammed into the minivans and minivans generally don’t provide much legroom. However you do always get a seat in minivans, albeit once my seat was just an upside-down crate in between two other seats. We didn’t notice any microbuses when we were in San Juan del Sur, but if there are any they probably depart from near one of the local markets in San Juan del Sur.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua: Ultimate Travel Guide

  • Author david
  • Date October 3rd, 2023

Welcome to the vibrant shores of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua ! Well-known as a Central American travel hotspot, this remarkable seaside town offers an enchanting blend of cultural heritage, bustling markets, incredible food, and yes, stunning beaches.

From breathtaking vistas to rich local cuisine, San Juan del Sur offers everything a curious traveler could possibly want! This sun-soaked paradise is the ultimate Nicaraguan travel destination, whether you’re looking to enjoy its idyllic beach or dive deep into its culture.

My time in San Juan del Sur

In the heart of Nicaragua, you can immerse yourself in vibrant festivals, dine at local eateries serving mouthwatering delicacies, embark on exhilarating expeditions, or kick back and enjoy the sublime sunsets at the edge of the Pacific. Each experience in San Juan del Sur holds a new discovery.

I visited San Juan del Sur in 2022 with the help of my friend Carlos from Visit Nicaragua. Together, we explored the hidden charms and secrets of this stunning beach town. I walked away with a newfound appreciation for this touristy town and was left with memories that would last a lifetime. This is my ultimate travel guide to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua!

Climb the Jesús de la Divina Misericordia statue

Standing atop on a hill above San Juan del Sur is Jesús de la Divina Misericordia. Also known as Cristo de la Misericordia or Christ of Mercy, it stands 24 meters (nearly 79 feet) tall, including its base. The statue, completed by Costa Rican sculptor Max Ulloa Rayo in 2009, is made of metal and fiberglass.

Rayo said the statue, which stands a whopping 134 meters (439 feet) above sea level, would be observed from far away. Indeed, the statue is easily visible from many locations around the area and is the town’s most prominent landmark. It costs 72 Cordobas ($2 USD) for foreigners to visit. Climb the steps to the top to admire the view of the entire city and bay. It’s spectacular!

Dine at Clementina Restaurant in the Central Market

No matter where you go in the world, markets will always be one of the best places to get a taste of local life. In San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the local municipal market is a lively and bustling place filled with friendly cooks and vendors. The market offers a variety of delicious Nicaraguan food, making it the perfect spot for a food adventure.

Street cooks at the local central market | Davidsbeenhere

One restaurant called Clementina stood out, serving traditional dishes like gallo pinto and a creamy sauce with jalapeños, onions, and cream. The gallo pinto, prepared with red beans and accompanied by eggs, cheese, maduros (sweet plantains), and avocado, was particularly tasty. I suggest wrapping everything in a fresh tortilla—it’s phenomenal! And if you like some heat with your food, try their spicy picante sauce.

Elsewhere in the market, you’ll find butchers cutting meat and vendors selling home goods. Other vendors offer fruits, vegetables, chili sauces, scarves, and secondhand clothing. Come with an appetite and your wallet!

Visit Maderas Beach

You can’t visit a beach town like San Juan del Sur without checking out the beach! Roughly twenty minutes outside of town is Maderas Beach , also known as Playa Maderas. The beach lies along the rocky shore of a picturesque bay, framed by the encroaching jungle.

Maderas Beach is a major tourist attraction near San Juan del Sur | Davidsbeenhere

The beach is a quieter alternative to the heavily touristed city, and is a haven for surfers. Along the beach, you’ll find restaurants, beach bars, and yoga and surf lodges. You’ll also find some budget-friendly hostels, including The Three Brothers. Whether you’re a surfer, swimmer, or sunbather, this small but beautiful beach has something for everyone!

Visit the San Juan del Sur boardwalk

Outside of its beaches and markets, another spot where San Juan del Sur comes to life is its boardwalk. Lining the coast is this lively recreation area with a nice mix of restaurants, food vendors, and shops.

Here, you can find common souvenirs like keychains and sunglasses, and even unique, wood-carved souvenirs. You can also try your hand at some street games if you wish! If you get hungry, I recommend the tajadas, or fried plantain chips. You can also find elote, or creamy street corn!

Eat at El Buen Gusto Restaurant

One of the most popular restaurants in San Juan del Sur is El Buen Gusto. This gorgeous, open-air restaurant overlooks the beach and boasts high ceilings. Best of all, they serve authentic Nicaraguan seafood!

Their tender shrimp cocktail is as fresh and succulent as it gets, and it has a bit of heat to it! I also highly recommend the fried red snapper, which has a beautiful, golden brown corn flour crust. Add some salsa to it and eat it with some of their fresh tostones!

16 best things to do in san juan del sur [nicaragua] in 2024.

Cazzy Magennis

San Juan Del Sur is easily one of Nicaragua's best places to visit.

With gorgeous beaches and tantalising oceans, it is a paradise for both surfing, and relaxing.

From hidden surf and yoga retreats, to buzzing hostels and exciting nightlife, it really does feel like a little slice of paradise.

We spent almost 2 weeks in and around this beautiful part of Nicaragua, and wanted to share with you all of the best things San Juan Del Sur has to offer.

As well as a few extra useful tips and tricks!

Let's get stuck in...

Travellerspoint

How to get to San Juan Del Sur?

There are a variety of ways to get to San Juan Del Sur, depending on what direction of the country you're coming from.

If you're heading to San Juan from the Costa Rica direction, or even the Ometepe direction, you can easily get a taxi from Rivas, or a bus.

If you're heading from Leon (which is where Bradley and I came from since we looped the country), you can get a shuttle bus.

The shuttle is around $20 and it takes about 8 hours. I recommend going with Nicatime as they were the cheapest and the ride was pleasant. We stopped for lunch at a cheap place in Granada too which was delicious.

Tour bus

Getting around San Juan Del Sur

All the actual good surfing beaches in San Juan Del Sur are outside the central area, so you’ll need to either get a taxi or shuttle to the beaches.

There are tour agencies all over the place that offer shuttle services to the beaches, but many of them require a minimum of 3 people per shuttle.

If you want a taxi you will have to negotiate hard for a price. We got a taxi to Playa Yankee for $15 dollars and a shuttle was $15 each, so it can be better value to get a taxi if you’re sharing with people.

You can find a taxi driver on the street, ours turned out to be a big poop head, so make sure you get a nice one and AGREE beforehand on the price!

Where to stay in San Juan Del Sur

There are LOTS of great places to stay in San Juan Del Sur. I’ll list my top 5 below!

  • HC Liri Hotel : This beachfront hotel offers rooms with sea views, an outdoor swimming pool, and a bar.
  • Looking Good Surf House : This charming property is just a short walk from the beach and it offers a garden area and outdoor pool.
  • Casa Romona Hostel: Cheap hostel in great location with cheap air con! (they can arrange a taxi to Rivas for a great price). ‍
  • Selina Maderas: Selina is a go-to name that’s great for digital nomads and a wide range of room options. ‍
  • Casa Andalucia : On the hill top looking over San Juan, it’s beautiful and has a rooftop pool.

This range of hotels have options to suit absolutely everyone. But you can find the best hotels in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua here .

Top things to do in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua

Okay, now for the part you came for, the top things to do in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua!

1. Learn to Surf at a Surf Camp

surfing in nicaragaua

Nicaragua is one of the best places in the world to learn how to surf .

And rather than just getting lessons by the sea, you should definitely spend some time at a surf camp!

We stayed in Rapture Surf Camp for a couple of nights, and got a little taste of what you do to learn to surf here.

It’s a really great community and all your food, surfboard rental and surfing lessons are included in your rate. You can also choose to stay in dorms, really cute tents or actual air conditioned rooms!

Anyway, it’s fantastic value and a great place to spend 1-2 weeks learning how to surf. I recommend staying for a solid 10 days if you’ve got time.

If you don’t wanna surf at a surf camp, then simply head to one of the many beaches in Nicaragua at San Juan Del Sur.

Playa El Yankee is a beautiful and secluded beach and boards are around $10 for a day rental and $20 for a lesson .

Playa Maderas is the most popular surfing beach, where you can take a guided lesson which includes your surfboard and a private instructor for 2 hours.

You can also pre-book this alternative surf lesson , which is best for beginners who want to try it out.

The great thing about surfing in San Juan del Sur is that there are often lots of beach bars and shacks on the beach, so you can take frequent breaks and buy snacks and drinks as you please.

2. Relax on a Yoga Retreat

relax in san juan del sur

San Juan Del Sur is the perfect place to relax. It’s got stunning beaches (many of which are uncrowded), along with beautiful blue seas and much more.

It’s a perfect place to relax and if you want a yoga retreat with the best food in the world (I am not exaggerating), then Costa Dulce is the place for you . It’s secluded, beautiful and you will leave here feeling like a new person!

They’re located right next to Playa Escameca , so you’ll be right next to the beach here.

You can also combine surf and yoga at a yoga surf retreat here too.

If you don’t want to go to a yoga retreat, then you’ll find that most hotels and hostels will offer yoga sessions for either free or a small fee .

Overall there’s plenty of options here in San Juan del Sur, so it’s just a case of browsing well and picking the best option for you (in terms of budget, facilities and what’s included).

3. Parrttaayy

San Juan Del Sur nightlife

In peak season, San Juan Del surf is known for its heavy party scenes!

Actually every Sunday they have this massive pub crawl where all the backpackers gather and bar hop all day and night. It’s called Sunday Funday and it’s quite cheap.

There's even a Sunday Funday Pool Crawl for those looking to cool down in the heat!

That’s a great way to meet people and have fun, but if you’re not there on a Sunday, there are many bars in the area that have live music and lots of drink promotions during the week (such as tequila for less than $1!).

Iguana Bar is a solid option that has both an upstairs and downstairs bar, and is also located right on the beachfront . It’s actually open as early as 8:00am (until 2:00am all days of the week), so you can come for cocktails earlier in the day too.

So you can easily DIY your own pub crawl!

Here's some more information if you're looking to get involved in Sunday Funday which I highly recommend.

4. Visit the Christ of the Mercy

christ staue at san juan del sur

The Christ of Mercy (locally known as El Cristo de la Misericordia) is almost like a smaller version of ‘Christ the Redeemer’ in Rio and is set upon a big hill just west of the town .

It’s one of the most iconic San Juan Del Sur attractions and isn’t a difficult walk, but you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the city from the top (along with getting up and close with this giant 80 ft statue).

Although it’s stunning at any time of day, the views from the top are spectacular at night when San Juan Del Sur is lit up and shining.

It’s great walking up just before sunset too as the weather is much cooler and the colors of the sky that you’ll see are truly unbelievable!

The Christ of the Mercy is also easy to get to as you just need to cross the drawbridge on the beach and then walk up. From there, just follow the signs towards Malibu, and then you’ll come across signs for the Christ of Mercy.

Here's some more information about the route you should take to reach this iconic attraction!

It’s only $2 for the entrance fee too , so it is among one of the cheapest things to do in San Juan Del Sur.

5. Take a Catamaran Ride

Catamaran tour

Heading out on a catamaran is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in San Juan Del Sur.

You won’t be short of tour options either as there are lots of signs advertising this activity along the beach. However, one of the most popular operators for catamaran trips in San Juan Del Sur is Nica Sail !

You also won’t be breaking the bank to do this, as you can get a full-day package deal for around $70. This includes all your food and drink for the day, so take advantage of this by sipping cocktails on the boat throughout your trip.

Sounds like the life right? Honestly - I couldn’t recommend this experience enough!

The catamaran will also stop throughout the trip so you can jump out for a swim. You’ll also want to give snorkelling a go as the waters are so clear.

So if you’re looking for a fun and unique day out then make sure you add this to your itinerary!

You can find NicaSail just a block away from the Parque Central in town , so you can walk in and discuss the different options. They are currently open from 9:00am until 5:00pm all days of the week.

There’s also another great option for those who want a more authentic experience, which is exploring islets on Lake Nicaragua (which is close to Granada). We highly suggest booking this day tour which includes round-trip transportation from San Juan del Sur,  as well as your professional guide who will show you the very best parts.

6. Horseback Riding on the Beach

horse ridng in san juan del sur

If you are picturing a stunning sunset whilst trekking along the beach on a beautiful horse - then you’re exactly right!

This is one of the most relaxing (and romantic) things to do in San Juan Del Sur, and is a popular activity with couples.

You’ll find numerous providers in town who offer horse riding along the beach, so it’s just a case of browsing until you find the best option for you.

If you want a more secluded experience in the outer region, then you can organize your horseback riding tours with Rancho Chilamate . They will take you to some of the most beautiful beaches in the area that are famous for their isolation and tranquility.

The guided tours can be taken at any time of the day, whether it’s during sunset, or early in the morning. They last for around 5 hours and cost around $65 per person.

This awesome day tour is also a great option if you’re looking to go horse riding along Playa Maderas which is a 20-minute drive outside of the city center. You’ll visit the Christ of the Mercy too as you enjoy these seriously impressive panoramic views.

Playa Maderas is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area - so be sure to bring your camera as it makes for the perfect backdrop!

7. Drink cocktails by the Beach

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

San Juan del Sur is full of beach bars , so you’ll be spoilt for choice when wanting to get a few cold ones in!

Here we’ll also find plenty of restaurants located on the beach, which are lovely with great views, fantastic food and great 2-4-1 cocktails!

They are a little pricier than other restaurants, but for the views and the atmosphere, it’s definitely worth paying a little more.

These are great at both lunchtime (you can dip in the sea!), and in the evening to catch a sunset.

There are endless options to choose from but some of the most popular spots include the Iguana Bar , Dale Pues , and Simon Says !

8. Learn Spanish

Spanish lesson

Nicaragua in general is a great spot to learn Spanish , but San Juan Del Sur specifically offers plenty of options when it comes to learning this awesome language.

Spanish is really useful to know if you’re planning to spend long periods of time in Central America, South America and Spain too!

One of the best ways to learn Spanish is by heading to one of the language schools in San Juan Del Sur . You can spend hours here learning if you wish, and the prices are cheap too.

You can actually get lessons for as cheap as $5 per hour in this city , so there’s no excuse not to learn!

One of the most popular options in San Juan Del Sur is Lago Azul Spanish School as it has plenty of great reviews. They even have a week-long immersive experience for just $250 which includes a homestay, all lessons and extra activities too!

If you are still unsure (or want to try something less intensive), then we highly suggest booking this Spanish lesson , where you can choose from different durations and also have meals included.

9. Go on an ATV Tour

ATV tour

Now, this is one of the coolest things to do in San Juan Del Sur!

Everyone loves a good ATV tour, and there’s no better way to explore the surrounding region of this beautiful town.

Regardless of which provider you pick, you’ll find that all of the routes offer a fantastic and fun experience, and you’ll be in safe hands too!

We suggest pre-booking your spot on this ATV half-day tour , which lasts for four hours and offers a variety of route options. You can either visit some of the nearby beaches, head to the Christ of Mercy, or explore the jungle.

The ATVs are comfortable, safe, and easy to drive so you don’t need to worry about going on this tour. There will be local guides to help you every step of the way too, and they’ll even show you some of the city’s hidden gems.

One of the best things about this tour is that you can also choose when to start your tour, so there’s a lot of flexibility. The operator recommends starting around 2:00 pm, given it will give you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery before watching the sunset .

You can also find many other ATV Rental options within town, and San Juan ATV Rentals is one of the highest-rated. They are located on Avenida Vanderbuilt and are open from 8:30am until 5:00pm, Monday through to Saturday (and also from 8:00am until 2:00pm on Sunday).

10. Visit some of the Beaches in the nearby area

Playa Maderas Beach

Although San Juan Del Sur offers a beautiful beach, there are plenty of others to explore in the area.

This includes the beautiful Playa Maderas which is considered to be one of the best beaches in the country. It’s great for both surfing and simply relaxing and enjoying the Pacific sands.

You can also visit Playa Hermosa , Playa Remanso , and Playa Nacascolo as all of them are close by.

Many people choose to hire a vehicle and then head out of San Juan Del Sur to explore the coast at their own leisure. Hiring a motorbike in particular is a convenient option, and you'll find plenty of companies who will hire them out to you for a good fee.

Alternatively, you can also join this fully customisable ATV tour . Here you can ask your guide to lead you out to some of the more remote beaches, making it a more novel way of exploring the outer region of San Juan del Sur.

However, if you’re not confident in driving a vehicle abroad then some of the hotels in the city offer shuttle buses to the closest beaches.

You’ll just have to have a look around and do some research to see which hotels are offering them currently.

Trust me - there’s nothing better than spending a day exploring all the stunning beaches this coastline has to offer.

11. Take a day trip out to Ometepe

Ometepe Island

Ometepe is one of my favorite places in all of Nicaragua and is a must-visit if you’re staying in San Juan Del Sur.

The best way to get there is to take a local bus to Rivas, and then catch the ferry from there (it takes roughly 3 hours in total). It’s not a difficult journey and is one of the best day trips to do in the area!

You can check out the ferry schedule here .

Once you reach Ometepe your best bet is to hire a moped so you can explore to your heart's content.

The two main walks on the island are the Concepción Volcano hike and the Maderas Volcano hike although it’s unlikely you’ll have time to do these if you’re just spending the day.

If you do plan on spending the night here, then you can easily join this day tour up Concepción Volcano which includes a private guide and lunch.

However, there are tons of places to visit on the island including a local waterhole, Charco Verde, and El Pital Chocolate Paradise (which is a local chocolate factory!)

Ometepe Island is located some 60 km east of San Juan del Sur .

12. Try some local cuisine

Nicaraguan Cuisine

One of our favorite things to do whilst we travel is to try the local cuisine! In my opinion, it’s one of the best ways to get to know an area or city.

Nicaragua's local dishes primarily consist of rice, beans, plantain and a form of protein which is usually chicken or fish.

One of the country’s most traditional dishes is Gallo Pinto which can be found in restaurants throughout San Juan Del Sur. Consisting of red beans, white rice, onions, eggs, and avocado it’s a taste overload! You can even add cheese to it if you wish.

In San Juan del Sur, one of the best local restaurants that you can head to is Restaurante El Timón , who do some highly-rated seafood. They are open from 10:30am until 10:00pm all days of the week (on Friday and Saturday they stay open later until 1:00am).

You’ll also find plenty of freshly made burritos and tacos in the city too so there are lots of options.

However, if you’re all riced out then you can head to the likes of Dale Pues which serves international dishes including tasty burgers (a perfect option for those day-long hangovers).

13. Head on a tour to Playa La Flor

Olive Ridley turtle

Playa La Flor (or La Flor Beach Natural Reserve as it’s sometimes known) is an impressive area of over 3,000 hectares, and is one of the best places in Nicaragua to spot Olive Ridley Sea Turtles .

If you’re lucky you might get to spot baby sea turtles hatch , as this area is one of the top nesting sites in the country.

The best time of year for this is between October and November, where you’ve got a high chance of watching these little turtles make their journey towards the ocean.

Although you can drive there yourself if you hire a vehicle, public buses and tours also run to the reserve from San Juan Del Sur. Entering the reserve is cheap too and costs around $7.

If you’re a nature lover like us then taking a trip out to this reserve is one of the top things to do in San Juan Del Sur.

Playa La Flor is located roughly 21 km north of the town , and takes around 40 minutes to arrive by driving.

14. Grab a cold beer at San Juan Del Sur Cervecería

Nicaraguan beers

There’s no better way to relax in the hot weather than by having a cold beer in hand. Luckily, you’ll find plenty of options in San Juan Del Sur for this!

I’d recommend heading to Cervecería which is one of the most popular bars in the city. Ran by the Nicaragua Craft Beer Co, this bar offers a variety of unique craft beers that have been brewed in the city itself.

You can always go for one of the local beers like Victoria or Tone, or you can try something completely unique!

Not only does Cerveceria offer a wide variety of local ale, but they often have live music on during the evenings . This makes it a great place to relax and end one of your days in San Juan Del Sur.

So make sure you leave yourself some free time to nip in!

Cervecería is located along Avenida Mercado , which is just a block north of the Parque Central. It’s open from 11:00am until 12:00am Wednesday until Monday, as well as from 3:00pm until 10:00pm on Tuesdays.

15. Take a day trip out to Granada

Granada Nicaragua

Granada is another awesome place to visit if you’re staying in San Juan Del Sur!

It’s just a 1.5-hour drive from the city, but ideally, you’ll need your own vehicle for this one (as you would otherwise need to change buses which can take longer). You can also book a shuttle here which costs $25.

Granada is one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Nicaragua, and in all honesty, it requires a couple of days to explore ! However, many travelers just don’t have this kind of time so I recommend spending at least a day here to see the main attractions.

The most popular spots to visit within the city include the Main Plaza, the iconic Granada Cathedral, and the Chocolate Museum.

Make sure you also take a guided tour of the city so you can learn about its history from a local. We recommend heading on this day tour where you’ll not only see the highlights of Granada, but will also have a boat ride to Las Isletas too!

Another memorable experience you can do here is to head into the Mombacho Natural Reserve. You’ll need the day to explore this beautiful green forest, and on this day tour you’ll have all transport as well as zip-lining activities included.

Granada is located just under 100 km north of San Juan del Sur , and if taking buses you can expect the journey to take around 3 hours.

16. Spend some time at The Art Warehouse

Now, this is one of the more unique things to do in San Juan Del Sur!

The Art Warehouse is just a short walk from the beach and is a small art gallery and café that hosts workshops throughout the week.

Keep an eye on their Facebook Page during your stay, as this where they promote their art classes and events.

They also work with the local community, so a lot of the funds raised go straight to helping the local children get involved with art projects.

Not only can you get involved with a number of crafts here, but this place serves delicious food too! You’ll also want to try some of their tasty smoothies.

With awesome painted walls, a variety of workshops, and tasty dishes - this is easily one of the best things to do in San Juan Del Sur!

The Art Warehouse is located just a couple of blocks north of the Parque Central , and is open from 8:00am until 4:00pm all week (although you’ll want to check their website for news and current events).

The best time to visit San Juan Del Sur is around November to April, but the great thing about surfing in Nicaragua is that surfing is pretty much available throughout the year along the coast.

But, the best time will be in the “peak” season when the weather is dry and pleasant. (Still very warm!)

How long should you spend in San Juan Del Sur?

This will depend on what you want to do. If you want to learn how to surf then I recommend spending a couple of weeks at a surf camp in Nicaragua, or if you want to relax then a yoga retreat might be a great idea (which could be 1-2 weeks). If you’re just passing through on a Nicaragua backpacking route, then 3-4 nights is a great amount.

What is a good budget for San Juan Del Sur?

San Juan Del Sur is cheap! Much like the rest of Nicaragua. You will find the beach restaurants are a little more expensive, but head in land and everything is cheap as chips.

Accommodation is also not expensive, you can get double rooms for dirt cheap too.

You can get by on around $20 per day! Obviously, if you want to splurge more than you can.

Can you just book a tour for San Juan Del Sur?

Although you may find some tours available for San Juan Del Sur, there’s not really an option for exploring the city as a whole.

For this reason, you’re best to do a ‘self-guided’ tour where you can visit all the best attractions yourself. From there, you can take tours if you’re planning to go on a couple of day trips.

Where to next after San Juan Del Sur

If you’re heading to Costa Rica, you can get a taxi to the border for about $20, or you can travel to the beautiful island of Ometepe and stay there rather than just take a day trip!

Or you can simply head straight to Granada !

I hope you’ve enjoyed my list on the top things to do in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua. You might find San Juan Del Sur addictive and find you want to stay longer than planned, but don’t worry!

A Digital Nomad Guide to San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua

San Juan del Sur is a tiny beach town located on the Pacific side of Nicaragua. Known as “Port of San Juan del Sur” and a “Tourism City of Nicaragua”, the town is very popular with surfers from all over the world, as well as vacationing local families from Managua.

The town sits on a crescent-shaped bay, protected by hilly jungle. On top of one of the highest hills, on the north end of the bay, stands the Christ of the Mercy statue. This Jesus statue is one of the tallest in the world, standing over 400 feet tall. At the bottom of the statue is a small chapel that you can visit. The town also has a lighthouse that stands 15 feet tall and is solar-powered.

San Juan is the main location for all the Survivor: Nicaragua seasons including, Survivor: Nicaragua (2010), Survivor: Redemption Island (2011), Survivor: San Juan Del Sur (2014), and Survivor: Worlds Apart (2015).

However, most people come to San Juan for two things: the beaches and the parties. Known for their legendary Sunday Funday Pool Crawl and world-class waves, San Juan del Sur is vibrant and full of life. Not only is the town remarkably beautiful naturally, but many of the buildings, businesses, and homes in town have also been painted with bright, colorful murals adding to the electric feel of this magical beach town.

Nicaragua sometimes has a reputation for being unsafe and while the country has seen some civil unrest in recent years (2018), the country as a whole, including San Juan del Sur, is generally safe. Petty theft is the most common type of crime reported and that can easily be prevented by taking certain precautions. For example, keep your important documents and cash locked away and out of sight. Don’t leave anything unattended, especially in the car or the beach.

Keep in mind that Nicaragua doesn’t have Uber or similar services. The easiest and most efficient way of getting around Nicaragua is by renting your own car. However, there is public transportation available, referred to as chicken buses, and many people take advantage of that to get the full Nicaraguan experience.

I personally loved San Juan del Sur. This small beach town has a lot of things to offer in many different forms. There are endless outdoor and adventurous things to do, perfect waves with beautiful beaches. There are various bars and restaurants with live music and excellent food.

San Juan del Sur is breathtakingly beautiful, the beaches are ideal and they get some super fun waves. While I was only there for a short time, the town totally stole my heart. I have since recommended it to anyone I know who is traveling through the country. I went there to surf and experienced so many more amazing things.

Work in San Juan Del Sur

It’s getting easier to keep up with the digital nomad lifestyle in San Juan del Sur. For now, they have only a couple of official co-living and co-working spaces. One called Outsite and the other named Selina Maderas .

Outsite has offices all around the world and including San Juan del Sur, which they deem one of their most scenic locations. This gated community includes two large homes with four bedrooms in each, private and shared bathrooms, and a studio apartment. Each house also includes a pool! The workspace is on-site and air-conditioned. From the workspace, you’ll have the most incredible views of the ocean, garden, and locally painted murals.

While staying at Outsite the amenities include reliable Wi-Fi, a fully-equipped kitchen, towels and bedroom linens, toiletries like soap and shampoo, and hair dryers. There are laundry services available, parking on-site and there are work desks in each room.

Best Places to Live in San Juan Del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a pretty small town and not technically set up with “neighborhoods”. Instead, they are called departments. As a tourist or visitor, you’ll want to stay as close to the center of town or the beach unless you have your own car.

As mentioned previously, San Juan del Sur isn’t broken up into typical neighborhoods. The closer you are to the beach, the better the accommodations and restaurants. However, it will be slightly more expensive. If you decide to live away from the beach, it would be in your best interest to have your own form of transportation.

Similar to most places in the world, a simple search online can bring many options of places to stay. There are many options when looking for a longer-term apartment, so shop around so you can find what is perfect for you. When you’re looking for the right spot, keep in mind the location and if you will have your own mode of transportation if the house comes with Wi-Fi, etc.

The best party hostels:

  • Naked Tiger Hostel

Nicaragua is pretty laid back when it comes to visas. Once you enter the country, you automatically get a travelers visa that is good for 90 days. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, there are several options you can choose from to extend it. Citizens of Canada and Japan are given a 30-day visa.

Border Runs

Especially from San Juan del Sur, many people take a border run to Costa Rica. Once you cross the border and cross back into Nicaragua, you are good for another 90 days. From San Juan del Sur you can drive or take a bus to Costa Rica.

The border is open 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Monday–Saturday, Sunday closes at 8 p.m. You will have to pay a fee for exiting ($2–5) and entering ($10–13) Nicaragua. You will need your passport and cash as well as stamps on your passport from each side of the border.

Sometimes the bus is easier but more time-consuming. There are always plenty of people making border runs so you can make a day of it and spend some time in Costa Rica.

You can also plan trips to other nearby countries like Panama or El Salvador and get a new visa when you fly back into Nicaragua.

If you end up doing work for a trade job, working at a hostel, for example, many times the business owner can hire a lawyer to extend your visa so you don’t have to leave the country.

The food and culture in Nicaragua are both very vibrant! There are brightly colored murals painted on many buildings in town and you can hear live music most nights.

The traditional food you’ll find in Nicaragua almost always comes with rice and beans called Gallo Pinto. They will come with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals almost always come with some sort of meat or seafood. For example, chicken, pork, and/or fresh fish are your usual options to choose from.

Must-try meals and snacks:

  • Chicharrones are a deep-fried salty pork skin snack. They are super salty and crunchy and can be quite addicting.
  • Vigoron includes chicharron, yucca, and a cabbage salad.
  • Nacatamal is a corn flour stuffed with meat, usually, pork, mashed potatoes, and/or veggies, tied together in a plantain leaf then boiled.
  • Indio Viejo (“Old Indian”)is a stew-like meal made with shredded meat, onions, tomatoes, and peppers and it is usually eaten with a tortilla.
  • Quesillo is a tortilla stuffed with cheese and served with cream, onion, vinegar, and chile.
  • Tostones are crunchy deep-fried plantains.

Beer is also a huge part of Nicaraguan culture. Toña and Victoria are the two competing brews in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is also known for its rum, Flor de Caña. This rum has won awards all over the world. Most nights you’ll find both locals and visitors catching a beach sunset with drinks in hand.

Sunday Funday is legendary in San Juan del Sur. It is Nicaragua’s biggest pool party. This pool crawl happens every Sunday and is a huge draw to the area.

San Juan del Sur doesn’t have many of the typical markets that other places in Nicaragua have. In other areas, you’ll find big open-air markets with lots of crafts and homemade jewelry and art, clothing, anything you can ask for really.

There are only a few markets in San Juan del Sur. The biggest and most useful are the Seafood Market and La Esquina where you can get and find your basic food and drink needs.

A night out in San Juan del Sur is filled with good vibes. You can find places with live music and DJs where you can dance the night away. While it is more laid back than going out in the city, going out in San Juan del Sur is an unforgettable experience.

The best places to go for a night out:

  • Bar Republika

Just like going out in any other town or city, stay aware of your surroundings and don’t leave your drink unattended. If you can avoid walking home alone at night, especially after you’ve had a couple of drinks, that would be wise.

San Juan del Sur is not just partying, there are endless things to do in the beautiful beach town.

People come from all over the world to surf here. Whether you’re an advanced surfer or just starting out, San Juan del Sur is a surfers paradise. There are four main surf breaks listed below. Many places offer lessons if you’ve never surfed before and want to learn how.

  • Playa Hermosa – This break has a private entrance with a $3 fee. The beach stretches over a mile and it makes plenty of space in the lineup. People can spread out and catch waves everywhere so it always seems less crowded than some of the other beaches. It’s a great wave for any level of surfer. Located about 20 mins outside the town center, you can rent a board from Mango Rosa, grab food, use showers and hammocks. You will get the best waves at mid-tide.
  • Playa Maderas – One of the best and most consistent waves in San Juan del Sur, Playa Maderas is super popular with all levels of surfing. The best time to surf here is on a mid to high tide. It’s 25 minutes north of the main town and can get a little bit crowded. There are also options to rent boards if you don’t have your own.
  • Playa Yankee – Another private beach, Playa Yankee is also about 25 minutes from the town center. This wave is reserved for more advanced and experienced surfers. This spot can also be a bit more localized than the other surf breaks. There is nothing around at this break so make sure you pack everything you might need for the day.
  • Playa Remanso – This break is the closest to town and super user-friendly. There are bars and board rentals on the beach so you can pretty much spend the entire day here and not get bored. The wave works best at a mid-tide.

Catch the Sunset

One of the most popular things to do in San Juan del Sur is to watch the sunset over the ocean. Locals and tourists all flock to the beach, usually with a drink in hand, to watch the spectacular show.

There are a few hiking trails in and near San Juan del Sur that are worth checking out.

  • Playa el Toro is the beach that was featured in the Survivor series. From Mango Rosa, you can take a guided hike through the jungle, down the coast, and onto a breathtaking beach.
  • Parque de Aventura has guided and non-guided walks through the jungles and beaches. Taking a guided tour is recommended because they will point out flora and fauna native to Nicaragua as well as the real locals like sloths, monkeys, and different birds and reptiles.
  • The Jesus Statue is one of the largest in the world and you can hike to the base of it as well as a tiny chapel located nearby. There are two ways to get to the statue. You can follow the beach and climb a long set of steps or you can go through the neighborhood which has signs heading towards the statue.
  • The Lighthouse and Fortress are less popular than some of the other hikes but just as beautiful. There are also signs around town pointing the way to the lighthouse. As these paths are less traveled they are slightly harder to find.
  • La Flor Beach Park is known for its sea turtles. There is a small entrance fee to the park with endless things to see. They offer guided tours and are home to hundreds of plant and animal species. There are several trails throughout the park with some going along the beach and others going deeper into the mangroves and jungles.
  • The Petroglyph & Waterfall hike is absolutely stunning. You have to get permission to go here as it’s on private land, just check in at the front desk of Da Flying Frog Adventures. Along the trail to the waterfall, you will find a large rock with a hunting scene carved into it. It’s rumored to be nearly 1500 years old. At the end of the trail is a waterfall but depending on the season, it could be anywhere from a small trickle of water to a gushing one.
  • Another waterfall hike is called El Encanto . The trail follows the river bed where you might have to climb over some boulders. Similarly, this waterfall is more impressive during the rainy season.
  • The Radio Antennas hike is a bit longer than the rest but takes you to the top of a mountain, rewarding you with indescribable views. The head of the trail begins on the road leading out of town.
  • This is a very popular activity. The beaches are filled with people relaxing and soaking in the sun with a cold drink next to them. The beaches in San Juan del Sur are intoxicatingly beautiful.
  • A majority of the hostels and hotels also feature pools and/or sun decks to lounge around if you’re not a big sand fan.

There is no better way to cool off during a sunbathing marathon than by going swimming. The beaches and ocean are inviting and offer a great place to swim (or surf).

As also mentioned before, many accommodations have pools where you can swim and cool off from the blazing Nicaraguan sun.

Rent a Quad

Riding a quad is always fun, especially when you can trek through the muddy jungles. You can take a guided tour or rent one and explore on your own.

Take a Yoga Class

Yoga is almost as popular as surfing in San Juan del Sur. It pretty much goes hand in hand. There are dozens of classes in all sorts of styles, times, and locations.

La Flor Nature Reserve

This reserve was set up to protect the Olive Ridley sea turtles who come to lay their eggs year after year. The best time to see sea turtles here is from July to January with the most active months during October and November.

From town, you can take a bus or taxi. The reserve costs $200 cordobas (USD$5) to visit.

Take a Spanish Class

If you are keen to learn some Spanish, San Juan del Sur is an excellent place to take Spanish classes. There are many places that offer daily classes and most hostels will hold classes right on site making it super easy for travelers.

Take Day Trips to:

  • Isla de Ometepe – Definitely a must-see when traveling through Nicaragua, Isla de Ometepe is hard to describe in words. Made up of two volcanoes in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe is one of the most beautiful places in all of Nicaragua.
  • Granada – This super colorful city is a good change of pace if you need a break from the beach for a day, especially if you are a history buff. This is where you’ll find all the local markets, historical buildings, museums, shopping, and galleries.
  • Masaya Volcano – Not far from Granada is Masaya Volcano. This active volcano is one of the coolest in the country to visit because you can almost always see burning lava.

Horseback Riding on the Beach

Riding horses on the beach is incredible. The tours last about five hours and you can book them at any time. Sunset is obviously one of the most popular times for a good reason.

Go to the Chocolate Cafe

The Chocolate Cafe and Museum offers two-hour tours daily. You can book them at 11, 2, 4 and 8 pm. You’ll get to make and taste your own chocolate as well as take some home for family and friends as a tasty souvenir.

Go to the Local Brewery

The Cerveceria brews their beer right on site. The craft brewery is one of the only ones in the area and serves up more than just the classic Toña or Victoria.

Sailing on a Catamaran

One of the more unique adventures you can have in San Juan del Sur is sailing on a catamaran. This can offer you all the beauty of Nicaragua from the perspective of the water. You can make it a whole day trip complete with lunch, swimming, and snorkeling.

Most people like to visit from November through April. The warmest month is April, June has the most daylight while March has the least amount of rain. If you’re heading to the town to surf, you’re in luck because there are waves year-round here.

There are plenty of things for families to do when visiting San Juan del Sur:

  • Zip Lining – Flying Frog Canopy Tours is a really great family activity. They have 17 ziplines that take you over and through the jungle. While zip-lining you will have the chance to see monkeys, sloths, birds, and a waterfall. Flying Frog also offers to repel and a Tarzan swing.
  • Parque de Aventura – A fun place to visit with your family. They have several adventure tours you can choose from including taking a ride in a Polaris to the highest point of San Juan del Sur, a playground, and a reptile sanctuary. You can also find zip lining, walking trails, and a private garden you can wander through.
  • Surf Lessons – A family surf lesson is always a good challenge.
  • Frisbee Golf Course – Located close to San Juan del Sur where there is also a pool on-site you can make use of.

Living in San Juan Del Sur

Transportation is scarce in San Juan. It’s easy to get around if you have your own car and many people end up getting dirt bikes or motorcycles to get around. Most people walk in and around town. Some buses go to and from town and you can sometimes get a taxi, however, they don’t have Uber or Lyft.

Many hostels and hotels offer transportation and shuttles to and from different places and activities.

Surfing and yoga are the two most popular ways to stay healthy and fit. It is also easy to eat healthy here if you can avoid all the sweets and drinks so easily available. There are loads of vegetarian options and of course loads of fresh fish. You can also find fruits and vegetables, rice and beans and sometimes fresh juices.

It’s easy to stay active in this town whether it be with the aforementioned yoga and surfing, hiking, swimming or anything else you might find to do.

Both the locals and tourists who visit San Juan del Sur are some of the happiest and welcoming people. The town is washed with good, beachy vibes. While it may be considered poor in monetary value, San Juan del Sur is rich in kindness and hospitality.

The medical care in San Juan del Sur is not the best. There are no major hospitals, and only some clinics. It is a good idea to have travelers insurance as there isn’t any in Nicaragua. It’s also recommended traveling with a small first aid kit, fully stocked. This is a good practice to get into no matter where you’re traveling.

Make sure you are fully covered by reading our full Digital Nomad Travel Insurance guide .

Many jobs that are found in the San Juan del Sur area are related to hospitality and tourism. There is a huge turnover in hostels, bars, and restaurants as people move about and travel through the country.

Many of these jobs are work for trade, meaning you won’t make a lot of money but some of your living costs, like rent or food could be included.

If you are a surf instructor and/or yoga teacher, you might also have an easier time finding a job as these are always high in demand.

When is the best time to visit Nicaragua?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit Nicaragua is between November and May — the country’s dry season. You’ll see plenty of sunny days, with temperatures sitting between 25 to 28°C in the majority of the country. You may experience a tropical shower along the Caribbean coastline.

Nicaragua’s wet season officially begins at the end of May, but it’s still possible to enjoy the country’s many beautiful attractions with minimal disruption right through until the end of August. In fact, the only time to avoid visiting is in September and October, when the heaviest rains can disrupt travel.

Granada, Nicaragua

Visiting Nicaragua in November - April

Nicaragua’s dry season begins in November, when the majority of places enjoy dry, sunny days and mild temperatures. This makes it the ideal time for exploring the colonial cities, beaches, volcanoes and nature reserves the country is so famous for. Christmas, New Year and Easter are peak times which see the beach areas in particular becoming busy with Nicaraguan holidaymakers.

Events & Festivals

  • Holy Week (March/April): Holy Week in Nicaragua sees colourful religious processions in the city of Granada, and smaller events around the rest of the country.
  • Purisima festivities (early December): The ‘Purisima’ festivities, honouring the Immaculate Conception, comprise processions, singing in the streets and fireworks displays in some places.
  • Week-long surfing competition (late November): An annual week-long surfing competition sees some of Latin America’s best surfers converging on the beaches around San Juan del Sur; competing against each other and the waves.

Great egrets, Juan Venado Island

Visiting Nicaragua in May - June

Although May marks the beginning of the rainy season, this usually only manifests itself in higher temperatures. Showers generally fall in the afternoon or overnight and rarely last more than a couple of hours at a time. This time of year is particularly recommended for snorkelling and birdwatching.

Visiting Nicaragua in July - October

The wettest time of year to visit Nicaragua, though the weather still doesn't reach the extremes seen on Caribbean islands . The months of September and October are best avoided as the heaviest rains can cause disruption to travel; particularly in rural areas.

Digital Nomad in San Juan del Sur: A Complete Guide

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua is a super fun spot to be a digital nomad. I absolutely love this little beach town.

It has gained notoriety as the ultimate backpacker destination and surf hub . And now I’m here to make it known as a Digital Nomad hub .

It’s the perfect mix of laid back and chill , with a lot to offer when you’re not working.

This is definitely the type of place people get ‘stuck in’ – where they plan to only stay a short time, but end up staying much longer. Or we met many people who had left and come back.

Read on for my ultimate guide to working remote in San Juan del Sur.

Check out my guide for the easiest way to get to San Juan del Sur .

Catch a Sunset

I added this to the top of the list because honestly Nicaraguan sunsets are on another level. Every day. Unbelievably orange sunsets. And they look great from everywhere, whether you hike up to Jesus (keep reading) or look out of your window.

Hike to Cristo de La Misericordia

Aka the Jesus statue . This is the best view in the house. The hike is about 15 minutes straight up hill, but the view from the top is well worth it. It costs $2 at the top to enter.

This is pretty much the main thing to do during the day in San Juan (besides working, or course). The beach in SJDS is pretty lame and no one goes to it, so staying in a hostel comes in handy as most of them run shuttles to the better beaches. You can even surf!

The good beaches are around a 15+ minute drive out of town, so its not really walkable. There are also many taxis that wait around (go to the corner by the building with the big map painted on the side) if you can’t get on the shuttles.

And if you get hungry out there, don’t worry. There are little beach bars so you can grab food, a Victoria, or juice. Read the next section for more details about the beaches.

Learn to Surf

There are several beaches (Remanso, Maderas, and Hermosa) that are great for surfers! And if you want to learn, the hostels can provide lessons, or there are people at the beaches ready to teach.

But be warned: in late January, February, and March, the water is super cold . We learned this the hard way when we were here in February. I tried to surf a couple times but couldn’t last more than 30 minutes because I was shivering and my hands and feet were numb.

Remanso is the best beach for beginners . The waves here are smaller and more gentle. There is a nice beach bar here as well to grab a juice or beer. It is located about 30-40 minutes south of San Juan, depending on traffic.

Maderas beach has the most consistent waves , and they can get pretty big. If you are a beginner, it might be best to practice in the white water. There are two big beach bars, serving food and drinks all day, as well as access to beach chairs and umbrellas.

If you don’t know how to surf, fear not, there are several surf shops offering lessons once you get there.

This beach is about 15 minutes north of San Juan, and is the closest to Selina.

Hermosa is a private beach, but if you stay in a hostel, you can get access to the beach with their shuttle service. You may recognize it from Survivor , and as the name suggests, is quite beautiful. It is great for all levels of surfers.

Open Mic Night

Every Wednesday at the Cervezeria is open mic night and everyone is there. Most of the acts are actually pretty good. If you’re a singer, make sure to get there early enough to sign up!

Sunset Fest

On Saturdays , the hostels set up tents, games, food and drinks, at one of the beaches starting around 3pm and goes until after sunset. It’s a great way to meet people and you can even win prizes (like tickets to Sunday Funday).

Sunday Funday

Full disclosure – we never actually went to Sunday Funday… I think I’m past the rage-all-day stage of my life, but from what I hear, it gets wild . At its core, it’s a pool hop. It costs $25, which includes a shuttle between the 3-4 different bars hosting. Ladies even drink free for part of it!

Weekend Trip to Ometepe

Ometepe is… an adventure. It’s an island in the expansive Lake Nicaragua, known for its twin volcanos .

You can easily get to it from San Juan del Sur by taxing a 45 minute taxi to the ferry terminal in Rivas (around $30), and then taking the hour ferry to Moyogalpa. Once on the island, there are plenty of taxis waiting to take you to your final destination.

On Ometepe, you can go on hikes (to San Ramón Waterfall or up the volcano), swim in the natural pools of Ojo de Agua, rent motorbikes and explore the island, kayak through mangroves, eat delicious vegan chocolate at El Pital, and more !

Getting Around San Juan del Sur

In San Juan del Sur proper, you can walk everywhere . The only exception is to get to the surf beaches. In that case you can take a taxi or stay at a hostel that has daily shuttles.

To get around from city to city, there is a bus system, but we never actually took the bus. We heard from some locals its a little sketch (mostly theft), but I met many backpackers who took the buses and didn’t have any problems.

We took either taxis or shuttles to get between cities. Gekko Explorer is the shuttle service we used several times; they have routes all over Central America.

  • A taxi to and from the Ometepe ferry is $30 (you can maybe talk them down to $20)
  • A taxi on Ometepe was $30 to get from one side of the island to the other
  • Taxi to Granada is $60 total
  • Shuttle to Leon is $30 per person
  • A taxi to Managua was about $60

Uber does not exist in Nicaragua.

What to Eat in San Juan del Sur

Traditional dishes like vigorón (bottom left), a chicharron, yucca, and cabbage salad, served in banana leaves; and nacatalmal (bottom right), corn flour filled with pork, mashed potatoes, and veggies, tied in a banana leaf then boiled, seem to only be sold by vendors on the street, not in restaurants.

I highly recommend you try! Both are usually made with meat, but you can get vigorón sin carne (without meat) if you ask!

In San Juan del Sur there are a lot of restaurants, but most of them serve the same, overpriced items . The spots along the beach serve seafood, and are $15-20 per entree. Staying here for the long-term means you’ll probably get sick of the restaurant selection after a while.

For cooking at home, convenience stores sell basics like eggs, there is one larger supermarket on the south side of town, and there’s a farmers market in the center of town where you can get fruits and veggies.

Here are a few of our favorite restaurants:

The only beach spot that is decently priced . They mostly serve seafood, along with everyone else along the beach, but their camarones a la plancha (grilled shrimp) are the best!

If you want really good breakfast or lunch , and a lot of it , Simon Says can’t be beat. Plus they have Vegetarian and Vegan options! Sadly they aren’t open for dinner. (Top picture)

Social is one of the few places that doesn’t serve the exact same thing as everyone else, so it’s pretty busy. Our food took forever to arrive, but the vibes were cool, and everyone from our hostel seemed to show up there. They have pool tables and a swimming pool .

Where to Stay in San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur has one of the best backpacker communities I’ve ever experienced. We normally always stay in Airbnb’s so we can have a better working environment and more space, but we took a chance and stayed in a hostel.

The people we met were amazing – the internet was a nightmare . Check out my detailed account of the WiFi and coworking situation .

There are many hostels to choose from, as well as a surprising amount of Airbnb’s considering it is such a small town, and of course there are hotels. During our 3 weeks in San Juan, we stayed at two different hostels and an apartment.

Where to Work in San Juan del Sur

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

It seems in general, it’s pretty hit or miss across town. Some places have amazing internet, while some have barely usable internet .

The first two weeks we were here, our internet was amazing and had no problems working at home. The week after, we decided to stay in a hostel to make some friends… which is where our WiFi luck ran out.

The hostel had a dismal internet connection, unless you were in the common area (which wasn’t really geared towards working). We then realized that the rest of the town had pretty unreliable internet as well.

Even cafes with ‘coworking spaces’ were unusable at times. So keep that in mind as you continue reading this list; your best bet for a reliable work set up might be staying in a hotel. Or read my detailed account of the best coworking spaces in San Juan del Sur .

Best Time to Visit San Juan del Sur

Nicaragua is in the Tropical Climate , meaning there is very little variation between the seasons. The temperature stays between 70˚F-90˚F for the most part. The most distinctive change in the seasons is ‘wet’ and ‘dry’.

Rainy Season

The rainy season begins in late May, and lasts through October. The rain not only brings the best surf , but the country really comes to life as plants flourish during this time, giving it more of a jungle-feel like in Costa Rica.

November through April mark the dry season. The surf is good for beginner to intermediate athletes who prefer tamer waves. Despite the dry landscape, its almost guaranteed to be a clear skies everyday . Although watch out for high winds.

March, April and May are the hottest months of the year , after the sun makes its way north across the equator for the Spring Equinox. During these months it will get up to 90˚F. Luckily you have the ocean breeze providing some relief.

Ocean Winter

I don’t really know what to call this season so if you have a better name, let me know. Between mid January and mid March, the warm water gets ‘sucked’ out of the bays, and you’re left with freezing ocean water . Of course this was when we were visiting.

It was so cold that I had to cut my surf lessons short each day because my hands and feet were numb. Normally the water is super warm like a bath, but during this short period of time, its almost unbearable. And of course no one has wet suits.

Costs to Digital Nomad in San Juan del Sur

The short answer to this question: more than you would think.

Although Nicaragua is a ‘third world country’ it’s not exactly cheap. Getting to Nicaragua is quite a feat and can really add up between flights, shuttles, taxis across borders, etc.

Lodging varies depending on if you are looking for an apartment, or would rather stay in a hostel. But either way you can expect to spend $1000-1500 a month. Hostels would be slightly cheaper.

Restaurants are weirdly expensive in San Juan del Sur, some may even charge you $20 for an entre.

The local currency is called “córdoba,” named after a Spanish conquerer. The exchange is roughly $1 USD = 35 córdoba. Although Nicaragua has its own currency, USD is widely accepted as well. Even street merchants will take USD (and they’ll take coins which is surprising).

But make sure you only have crisp dollar bills. If there is a rip or mark on the bill, the Nicaraguan people have a hard time exchanging it and therefore wont take it.

One key thing to note about money in Nicaragua: the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned Nicaragua (something to do with sham elections and their dictator).

This basically means your debit card wont work and you cant use ATM’s . Credit cards still work, and you can still pick up money from the bank.

It’s not the end of the world by any means, but it is a hassle, and something we didn’t realize until we were actually in Nicaragua with no cash, wondering why none of the ATM’s seemed to work.

Don’t make our same mistake; get your money from an ATM before you enter Nicaragua!

Is it Safe in San Juan del Sur?

San Juan del Sur felt super safe to me . It’s a very popular backpacking destination, and very popular with solo-female travelers. I would get catcalled occasionally if I walked around alone, but nothing too forward and nothing that made me feel unsafe. It was mostly annoying.

As with everywhere in the world, be mindful of your bags and pockets so you don’t make yourself a target for theft. The only ‘bad’ story I ever heard was from someone who was drunk on Sunday Funday and had their phone and wallet stolen.

At night, its smart to walk in well-lit areas, and avoid walking alone.

What to Pack for San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a laidback surfer town , so no one really cares what you wear. Girls wear bikinis around, and shoes are optional. If Nicaragua is the only place on your itinerary, plan for hot days (shorts, tank tops, swimming suits), but chilly-ish nights (light sweater, sweatshirt, or pants).

I may be a little dramatic about the ‘cool nights,’ but after living in the tropics for over a year, I’m not used to anything below 80F!

If you plan to do any volcano stuff, you’ll definitely want tennis shoes or hiking boots as well.

Ladies : if you plan to spend an extended amount of time in Nicaragua, bring your own tampons or other personal care products. They are hard to come by, and if you can find them, you’ll be paying a premium.

Also, the farmacia’s don’t sell regular bandaids , so make sure to bring your own. You might think you don’t need them, but thats what I thought too.

For some reason we kept getting injured in Nicaragua and the few Band-Aids I had brought really came in handy. The only problem was we needed more, and couldn’t find any. Not on Ometepe where Jack fell off a scooter, and not in San Juan where I tripped and fell in the street.

What NOT to Pack

Drones are generally prohibited in Nicaragua , so it’s best to leave that little guy at home. We did meet someone who didn’t realize they were banned and ended up paying off the people working at customs, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that.

Fitness in San Juan del Sur

If you’re here more than a few days, you may want to get into a routine of working out to stay healthy and strong. Surfing is a great way to stay fit. However, there are a few gyms as well.

Best Time of Year to Visit San Juan del Sur Nicaragua

The best time to visit San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. The weather is dry and sunny, with little to no rainfall, making it the perfect time to enjoy the town’s beautiful beaches and outdoor activities. Nicaragua beaches are amazing, so make sure to spend dome time next to the water!

Temperatures during the dry season typically are in the 80’s, with a pretty constant ocean breeze to provide relief from the heat. The dry season is also the busiest time of year in San Juan del Sur, with a lot of tourists visiting the town during this time.

Shockingly, the water is the coldest during the dry season. A cold offshore current comes in from January to May and the water is shockingly cold. We had heard about it but didn’t believe it until the water temperature dropped 15 degrees in just one weekend. If you’re visiting during the dry season and planning to do a lot of surfing, plan to bring a wetsuit!

Best Places For Families To Stay in San Juan Del Sur

Choosing the right family friendly place to stay in San Juan Del Sur can easily make or break your trip. During our family visit to Nicaragua, our kids were always quick to point out the ameneties that mattered to them and those they didn’t care about. DUring our 5 weeks in San Juan del Sur, we stayed in multiple places, so that we could help you choose the best family hotel in San Juan del Sur.

When choosing where to stay, we recommend avoiding downtown San Juan del Sur. It’s charming during the day, but after dark, the bar scene can get loud and the music can make it hard for kids to sleep. Our best recommendation is to pick somewhere that’s a bit out of town where you either have some jungle for the kids to explore or to be right by the beach. Luckily, it’s easy to find both jungle and beach accommodations for families in San Juan Del Sur. The other non-negotiable should be that you have immediate beach access or a pool. Nicaragua can get HOT, and a pool will make that much more tolerable!

Tree Casa Resort – Best San Juan del Sur Resort for Families

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

TreeCasa Resort is a unique eco-friendly resort set in the jungle. It is absolutely AMAZING! We spent lots of time at Tree Casa during the day (you can get a Day Pass to use the facilities) and we loved it so much that we ended up staying there. The resort has a range of accommodation options that all feel like your in a tree house of sorts, so the kids absolutely LOVED IT! While the rooms are great, it was really the staff and the resort property that won our hearts. The center of the resort has a MASSIVE TREEHOUSE in it where you can go up and hang out up in the trees. It’s the perfect place for some quiet time during the day and our kids loved to hang out up here and read. The pool is absolutely AMAZING with a couple of pools, a waterslide, and a waterfall that you can jump off of. It’s right next to the restaurant so often we’d get poolside snacks, or just enjoy an adult moment over lunch while we could still watch the kids in the pool!

Surf Ranch Hotel and Resort – Great Budget Option for Families

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

Surf Ranch is a popular hotel located just outside San Juan del Sur and while it’s pretty basic it’s a good budget option for families. The rooms aren’t anything special, but kids will LOVE the pool and the large waterslide, and mom and dad will love that you can get your drinks at the in pool bar. Another highlight of staying at Surf Ranch is that they have built Nicaragua’s first skatepark there. They even have some loaner skateboards that the kids can use, making it extra fun for everyone.

All of these vacation rentals have a pool, kitchen, several bedrooms, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi so you can stay connected.

However, as developers have started to see the natural beauty, some incredible luxury properties in San Juan del Sur have opened up. You’ll get all the luxury and pampering that you’d find in nearby Costa Rica at a fraction of the price. The best luxury stays in San Juan del Sur are a bit out of town and give you privacy, seclusion, and a chance to connect with nature.

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

Morgan’s Rock is the absolute best luxury resort in San Juan Del Sur. It’s a beautiful eco-lodge located on a private reserve, that even includes its own airstrip if you want to fly directly there. The lodge has a range of accommodation options, including bungalows and villas, and plenty of activities, including hiking, wildlife watching, and surfing. The food at the restaurant is fantastic, and the entire property will make you want to keep exploring.

In the morning, you’ll wake up to the sound of the Howler Monkeys and you’ll fall asleep to the waves crashing on your private beach. It’s pretty hard to beat a luxury stay at Morgans Rock in Nicaragua.

Best Luxury Vacation Rentals near San Juan Del Sur

Some of the best places to stay in San Juan del Sur are Luxury vacation rentals. Here are some of our top recommendations!

Ocean Front Villa at Playa Marsella – This villa is absolutely stunning and is located right on Playa Marsella. It’s so beautiful and Playa Marsella is one of the least crowded beaches in San Juan del Sur so you’ll get lots of time to relax here.

Cliffside Villa with Infinity Pool – If you want the best views around, you’ll live this house. The private balconies are some of the best you’ll find in San Juan del Sur.

Best Budget Hotels in San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur first got on the map thanks to budget travelers and surf bums. The roots run deep and there are still lots of fantastic budget accommodations in San Juan del Sur. Many of them have a communal area, and lots of them have a reputation for lots of partying and loud music late into the night, unless otherwise noted.

Hush Maderas – Best Quiet Budget Hotel

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

We absolutely love hanging out at Hush and the vibe there is awesome. It’s just a short 5 minute walk to some of the best surfing at Playa Maderas, and the hotel is right in the middle of the jungle. This property is only for ages 16+. When you get there you’ll love the hammocks and lounging nets right outside of the restaurant, which also has some of the best food in all of San Juan del Sur. Taco Tuesday is a hit and their homemade pasta on Wednesday night is incredible. If you’re looking for light food nearby, head to the Maderas Cafe at the bottom of the trail to the beach! YUM!

Casa Oro Hostel – Where The Action Is

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

Casa Oro is a charming and comfortable hostel located in the heart of San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The hotel is just a short walk away from the town center and the beach, making it an excellent choice for those who want to explore the town and enjoy the beach. There are also always lots of tours and activities that originate here, so if you want to be connected with all the best things going on and the best activities in San Juan del Sur, Casa Oro is a great place to stay.

The rooms at Casa Oro are clean, spacious, and comfortable, with bed linens provided. Each room has a private bathroom and balcony access. The beds are comfortable, and the rooms are decorated with vibrant colors and local artwork, giving them a distinctly Nicaraguan feel.

Naked Tiger Hostel – Biggest Parties

If you came to San Juan del Sur to party and drink, stay at the Naked Tiger. The Naked Tiger Hostel is a popular backpacker hostel located in the hills above San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The hostel has a reputation for being a party hostel, with a lively atmosphere and plenty of opportunities to meet other travelers.

The Naked Tiger Hostel offers a range of accommodation options, including dorms and private rooms. The dorms are clean and spacious, with comfortable beds and lockers for each guest. The private rooms are also clean and comfortable, with some rooms offering stunning views of the ocean.

One of the main attractions of the Naked Tiger Hostel is its social atmosphere. The hostel hosts regular events and parties, such as pool parties and barbecues, which are a great way to meet other travelers and have a good time.

However, it’s worth noting that the Naked Tiger Hostel is not for everyone. As a party hostel, it can be noisy and chaotic at times, and it may not be the best choice for those looking for a peaceful and relaxing stay. Additionally, the hostel is located up a steep hill, which can be challenging for those with mobility issues.

Do I Need a Car in San Juan del Sur?

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

Generally speaking, yes, we recommend that most travelers get a car to visit San Juan del Sur. While you’ll find lots of advertised shuttle services, they’re mostly old trucks that you can stand in the back of. They’re great for budget travelers but quickly get uncomfortable on the bumpy roads around San Juan del Sur.

How Safe is San Juan del Sur Nicaragua?

Before we traveled to Nicaragua on our 3-month trip, we had so many people express concern for our safety. We read in forums to not be out at night, to watch out on trails, and to keep our kids close at hand.

Guess what? Nicaragua is one of the safest countries that we’ve ever visited (and we’ve been to over 40). The people are helpful, the scenery is beautiful, and it’s got a slow and relaxed pace of life – all of which are PERFECT for safe travel.

San Juan Del Sur felt like one of the safest places in Nicaragua. There are plenty of expats and tourists there so it’s possible to get by with very little Spanish (unlike some other areas in Nicaragua with almost no English), so it’s a comfortable place to be. When we were there, it felt safe enough to send our kids to the store for a quick errand and there was absolutely NO TIME that we felt in danger or in an uncomfortable situation. We are careful of our surroundings, but still love to explore off the beaten path, and with kids, we’re usually in for the night by 8pm.

If you love the beach and sunshine, I can’t think of a better destination than San Juan Del Sur.

What Is The Food Like in San Juan del Sur?

You’ll find a pretty eclectic mix of food in San Juan del Sur. You’ll find traditional Nicaraguan dishes like Gallo Pinto and Nacatamales, but also lots of international cuisine. When we were looking for restaurants in San Juan Del Sur we ended up eating a little bit of everything including Thai food, fresh lobster, steak, poutine, and even some really great burgers (go to Dale Pues – the best burger in town).

Can You Buy Groceries in San Juan del Sur?

Yes, you absolutely can get groceries in San Juan del Sur, though we do recommend making a stop at La Colonia in Rivas on your way into town for a big stock up. The main grocery store in San Juan del Sur is Pali. It’s owned by Walmart and just has the basics.

best time to visit san juan del sur nicaragua

For more variety, head to the much smaller Miscelania Sanchez stores downtown (there are two, owned by sisters). This was our go to where we could find tortilla chips and salsa, peanut butter, baking supplies, and lots of canned foods. It’s small, but the selection is pretty good. Outside of that we bought our produce at at local produce shop (there are several in town, and the best meat in town is at Carnes San Martin.

Our visit to San Juan del Sur was our first taste of Nicaragua. Located a short 3 hr drive (including border crossing), from where we are currently based in Costa Rica, San Juan del Sur felt like a perfect getaway to relax and unwind. How to Get to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

If you are trying to figure out how to get to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the odds are that you are traveling by public transport. The alternative to public transport is hiring a taxi, which is much more expensive and is not the most eco-conscious option.

For information on getting to San Juan del Sur by bus, see the most popular routes below:

Granada, Nicaragua to San Juan del Sur

To get to San Juan del Sur from Granada, you can take a direct shuttle for about $29, or you can take a shuttle to Rivas for $25 USD and then take a bus to San Juan del Sur. Ultimately, you’ll only be saving a couple of dollars that way , though. For a cheaper option, you can also take a bus to Rivas, and then to San Juan del Sur.

Leon to San Juan del Sur

From Leon, you can get a shuttle directly to San Juan del Sur, and it will run you roughly $25. Alternatively, you can hop on a minibus in Leon to Managua, catch a taxi to Mercado Roberto Huembes, get on a bus to Rivas, and then finally catch a bus to San Juan del Sur. That option will likely only run you around $11 USD, though it’s much less direct and takes a lot longer.

Costa Rica to San Juan del Sur

You’ll start out in the city of Rivas before getting to San Juan del Sur . Rivas is a transport hub in Nicaragua, near the Costa Rica border. Most travelers arrive in San Juan del Sur by bus, as a direct bus leaves Rivas roughly every half hour. It’s about 45 mins ride to San Juan from Rivas and about 2-3 hrs from Granada. Taxi is another option for those looking for a more comfortable ride . Expect to pay around $10-15 USD from Rivas and $50-60 from Granada. A lot of travelers, we included, also arrive in San Juan del Sur from Costa Rica by crossing the border at Peñas Blancas. It’s a quick 30 min ride from the border by car or by bus.

How to Get Around San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Once in San Juan del Sur, you can easily get around town on foot; it isn’t very big, so it’s not a daunting stroll . There are shuttles running from the centre of town to the surrounding beaches every few hours with prices ranging from $5-15 USD for a return trip, and most of the beaches farther to the north and south can also be accessed by boat or taxi. If you do want to venture out a bit further and explore, we highly recommend renting a scooter or an ATV. We found the vehicles in decent condition, but none of them came with any sort of insurance. For the sake of your peace of mind, double-check your travel insurance coverage before you go.

Things to do in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

We arrived in San Juan del Sur on a late afternoon, the sun glimmering through the taxi window as we made our way from the Nicaragua/Costa Rica border. It was a Wednesday night, not the busiest party night of the week , but we still expected it to be rowdy. After all, party town is exactly what we expected San Juan del Sur to be.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

San Juan del Sur first popped onto our travel radar in December of last year when some fellow travelers that we met in Costa Rica couldn’t stop raving about the Naked Tiger Hostel and their massive Sunday Funday Pool Crawl , an afternoon/night of heavy drinking, dancing, and debauchery around hostels and bars in San Juan del Sur. They even mentioned something about a Wednesday Funday … Needless to say, we were expecting San Juan del Sur to be buzzing every night of the week.

But San Juan del Sur felt surprisingly quiet and laid back. Locals were sprawled out on the chairs outside of their homes gossipping away with their neighbours. Latin tunes echoed from inside the little shops and restaurants. Within 20 minutes of being there, we felt a familiar vibe.

Later that evening, we met up with our friends for dinner and a few drinks and ended up wrapping up the night watching a local dance show in the middle of the street just along the beach. San Juan wasn’t bumping that night . There were no bucket cocktails, no drunken tourists stumbling around the streets, and no vendors peddling souvenirs on every corner. It had all of the good we remember from S.E.A. and none of the bad.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

The next morning we were off to enjoy the best of San Juan del Sur’s day-time activities. As it turned out, there was no shortage of them.

Beach Hopping

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua is to spend a day (or a few days) checking out the beaches just outside of town. Don’t be fooled by the beauty of Playa San Juan del Sur, that’s not the best of it.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

When it comes to the best beaches, Nicaragua has more than a few contenders. Daily shuttles run between the town centre and some of 10+ beaches sprawling North and South of San Juan del Sur town central. Playa Hermosa and Playa Maderas are by far the most popular ones, followed by Playa Majagual and Playa Marsella .

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Return tickets to and from those beaches will set you back by $5-10 USD per person, but, of course, the flexibility to come and go as you please isn’t quite there when you rely on shuttle buses. We considered it but opted for a different option.

Renting an ATV/Scooter

There’s no shortage of things to do in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, and t here are a few different ways to explore. It wasn’t hard to find ATVs for rent in San Juan del Sur and at $75 for the day, they offered a pricey, but a much more fun alternative to shuttle service.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

ATVs and Motorcycles for rent in San Jun del Sur Armed with a dinky map that we picked up at the Tourist Info Centre, we were off on our day of beach hopping . Riding around on scooters wasn’t just a cheaper more fun alternative, it gave us the flexibility to visit whatever beaches we wanted and stay at each one for as long as we wanted! We left at 11am and got back around 4pm having seen 3 out of the 4 most popular beaches.

Best Beaches

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua beaches are some of the best you can find, but we’ve narrowed things down a bit.

Playa Hermosa (Beautiful Beach) is a private beach (you have to pay $3/pp entry fee to get in) but it boasts a beautiful longshore, white sand and lots of shady areas. T here is a bar on the beach where you can get drinks, food, and a place to sit down. Hermosa looked like a great place to learn how to surf, proven by a number of surfing lessons going on at the beach during our visit.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Playa Maderas is the surfing hot spot that features the country’s most well-known and consistent surf break. The beach was also good for swimming (watch out for those surfers though) and excellent for relaxing, playing beach volleyball, bocce ball, or just chilling at the restaurant people watching with a 2 for 1 passion fruit daiquiris in hand.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Playa Majagual was the most off the beaten path of the 3 beaches. There was hardly anyone there, but the little restaurant at the end of the beach serves cold beers, snacks, and o ffered a great view of the ocean. It was a great place for swimming (quick drop off, we love those), but had absolutely no surf. That was ok with us.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Hike to the Christ of Mercy Statue

We got back from the beaches just in time to hike up to the Christ of Mercy Statue for sunset. Luckily “the hike” was a rather manageable ascent up a fully paved road that took no longer than 20 mins. No hiking shoes required!

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

The view from the top was spectacular! The statue overlooked the entire Playa San Juan del Sur, the marina, and the nearby hills.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Unfortunately, the sun set right behind the statue, on the opposite side of the beautiful view of the town , so while it was still lovely, it kind of missed the mark for us. We think it would have been better to head back to town and watch the sunset from the beach.

Entrance fee = $2 USD

Exploring the Town

We spent a few hours every morning exploring the colourful town of San Juan del Sur. Every street was lined with cool wall art, restaurants and shops were decorated in bright designs, splashing the town with a zest of life.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Shop at the Municipal Market

There is a small but interesting Municipal Market tucked away behind a line of small shops just off Avenida Gaspar Garcia Laviana. It’s a good place to find some fresh produce along with some trinkets and cheap souvenirs. It was open until 4pm daily, so we managed to pop in for a look before one of our beach days . Nothing overly exciting, but a great place to grab some cheap local breakfast.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

There are also a couple of cool little boutiques with unique eco-conscious clothing, jewelry designs, and lots of surf gear. Apparently, Chelo 28 Surf was the first surf shop in town, but now there are tons of others. Check out ChicaBrava , and our personal favourite Auric .

The Party Scene

Despite our first impression, we quickly learned that there was no shortage of parties going on in San Juan del Sur throughout the week. Whether you prefer day drinking or night time affairs, there is something here to suit everyone’s taste.

Booze Cruising

5 years ago a booze cruise would’ve been the first thing on our to-do list, but this time, we hesitated. The Canadian owned, Loose Moose bar offered a daily booze cruise at $55 USD /pp for 6 hours of drinking, sun, and a visit to Playa Blanca (another good beach just south of San Juan del Sur). It sounded like fun, but we wanted a bit more than free beers and fellow drunken backpackers. Upon further investigation we found out that the booze cruise doesn’t stop at any other beaches , offer any snorkeling, fishing, or other activities. It really was all about the drinking , so we didn’t jump at the opportunity.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Nica Sail & Surf offered another alternative for a fun day in San Juan del Sur with their $75 USD/pp Playa Blanca Beach Cruise. T his cruise did offer fishing and snorkeling , and, supposedly, has been known to serve delicious ceviche on board.

On top of that, there were a ton of little 4-8 person private boats to be hired for a private 2 hour fishing, sailing and sunset cruise with prices starting at just from $25 USD pp. T hey may be BYOB, but offered a great budget alternative.

We toyed around with so many of these party cruise options, but, in the end decided to trade in partying for another day on San Juan del Sur’s amazing beaches. The younger versions of us probably rolled their eyes at how “boring” we were , but we loved our time in San Juan sans booze cruise. Maybe next time.

Sunday Funday and the Alternative

Sunday Funday Pool Crawl is why so many people come to San Juan del Sur to start with. An early morning (we hear you have to line up at 9am to get on the list) and $15 ticket will get you into one of the best parties in all of Nicaragua.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

The alternative is a day outing that we learned about from O’Shop Surf Shop . The party, promoted by O’Shop along with the Surfing Donkey Hostel , takes you to another secluded beach during the day where drinks are served, fish is caught, and a beach bonfire keeps the party going well into the night. A great option for those who may not fancy the idea of getting smashed drunk.

On top of the booze cruise, the Loose Moose also puts on a few great pub crawls in San Juan del Sur. The biggest ones happen on Tuesdays and Thursday around 9pm and take you to a variety of bars all over town.

Live Music and Trivia

And if that’s not enough or if you, like us, happen to be in town on odd nights, pop into La Carreta Bar y Restaurante on Monday nights, check out “Trivia Night” at Republika or Poker Night at Big Wave Daves on Tuesdays , “Name That Tune Trivia” on Fridays at Republika , or listen to some live tunes by the local band, Los Pobrecitos , frequently spotted at Big Wave Dave’s, Black Whale and Popoyo.

Best Restaurants in San Juan del Sur

If San Juan del Sur feels like too much of a party town for you, don’t worry, there is plenty to do here for those looking for a more healthy way to spend their days in San Juan.

We ate at a variety of fantastic restaurants. Highly recommended are:

  • Simon Says Smoothie Bar: offers, as the name implies, a selection of smoothies, along with more standard meals. They have vegan- and vegetarian-friendly options, as well as gluten-free options.
  • The Loose Moose Canadian Pub: for Canadian poutine and Caesars
  • La Lancha: for great fresh seafood (try their lobster and seafood soup) that won’t break the bank
  • Barrio Cafe: is a top tier Latin restaurant, with a menu friendly to vegans, vegetarians, and those who can’t have gluten.
  • Margarita: for delicious traditional Nicaraguan food. Note the place now has a new name and new management, but all the locals still know it as Margarita. Ask around for directions.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

In addition, there was another great spot that we didn’t get to, called Buddha’s Garden , open 9-4:30 Monday through Saturday. They serve up good vegetarian fair and smoothies that local expats rave about. We anticipate that vegan/vegetarian foodies will love this new space. Find it inside Zen Yoga.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

Speaking of yoga, Zen Yoga is another spot that we are putting on the to-do list for our next visit to San Juan del Sur. The studio offers 2-3 drop-in classes per day ( schedule here ) for just $10 USD/class (packages are also available). There are supposedly a few other yoga spaces in the area, including Nosara Yoga Institute , and Maderas Village .

Other Activities

If you are planning to be in town for a while, or like us planning to definitely come back and do more, then you’ll probably find yourself wondering what to do in San Juan del Sur. There are lots of other activities to keep you occupied in San Juan del Sur , so you won’t need to think too hard about it. Horseback riding, fishing, mountain biking, ziplining, and turtle watching are just some of the activities advertised in town.

things to do in san juan del sur nicaragua

We spent 3 days in San Juan del Sur, but that didn’t seem nearly enough time to experience all the things to do in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua that we had been looking forward to. The truth is we barely did anything but relax on the beaches and enjoy cheap Toña beers, cocktails, delicious meals, and awesome sunsets.

Luckily for us, San Juan del Sur is just 3 hours away from our home base in Costa Rica and makes for a great destination for those pesky visa runs . We can’t wait to return!

Where to Stay in San Juan del Sur

When looking for a hotel in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, we suggest staying in town to take advantage of being able to explore on foot. San Juan del Sur doesn’t have a lot of 4-5 star accommodation options right in town , as it is still more of a backpacker destination, but there are lots of great hostels (that offer private rooms), and bed & breakfast accommodation options to choose from. Of course, when it comes to accommodation, San Juan del Sur hotels on the beach can still offer plenty of guilt-free luxury.

  • Morgan’s Rock : is a hacienda and ecolodge in San Juan del Sur, less than a mile from a private beach. This hotel in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua has a pool, a restaurant, and a playground on-site, and the bungalow has a private terrace with a fantastic view of the mountains.
  • Playa Hermosa: is a San Juan del Sur ecolodge with a fully Nicaraguan staff, who also help care for turtles and other local fauna. The site is built completely of wood, and it relies largely on solar energy, to help make sure the beautiful green surroundings stay that way.
  • Costa Dulce : is an ecolodge that also offers yoga, surfing lessons, and massages, among other activities. The resort has its own beautiful beach and a sea turtle nursery, and the staff are open about their commitment to sustainable tourism.

My husband and I LOVED San Juan Del Sur! We did almost everything that you have on your list there. We both learned how to surf at Playa Hermosa, hiked to the Cristo, and ate at a few places you mentioned (although we had a horrible customer service experience at Gato Negro). Our favorite thing to do was sit on the beach that framed the town with a Tona in hand and watch the sunset each night! 🙂 So glad to see that so many others are falling in love with San Juan Del Sur, just as we had!

San Juan del Sur is a great town to visit and enjoy the parties. It also has a thriving expat community. As the outlying area grows we definitely see the impact all over. Spreading out of tourist and expats alike. Well written post and very informative of any of you looking to travel here.

Yes for sure. It’s the kind of place you can get stuck in for a while 🙂

I loved San Juan del Sur! We stayed at the Los Cardones Eco Lodge. The resort is also a turtle sanctuary. We were able to see turtle eggs hatch and baby turtles scurry into the ocean by moonlight. It was one of my favorite Nicaragua experiences.

What a cool experience! Thanks for sharing!

Hey there, thanks so much for the great report! when have you been there? thinking about going soon and wondering if it’s still as easy going and lively as you experienced it?! cheers

A Cruiser’s Guide to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Visiting San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, is like taking a step back in time. You won’t want to flash forward to modern day when it comes time to board the cruise ship again. This small town on a crescent-shaped bay along the Pacific Ocean invites tourists to explore its cobblestone streets still frequented by ox carts and horses. Of course, you’ll see plenty of 2020 edition Toyota pickups too, but that’s just what makes this cruise destination so special.

This cruiser’s guide to San Juan del Sur offers the best insider tips for making the most of your day in town. You’ll discover the best places to dine like a local, the top tourist sites, the best day trips to uncover the heartbeat of Nicaraguan culture, and so much more. Slather on some sunscreen and grab your camera, because the sunny town of  San Juan del Sur  is bound to impress.

Eating and Drinking in San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a Nicaraguan town known for its dining and its drinking too. Visitors can grab freshly-grilled pork atop thin, crispy fried plantains at a street-side stall, or saddle up at a bar with expats who call the town home. The following are the top places to eat and drink in San Juan del Sur.

The bay of San Juan del Sur is loaded with fishing boats, and they’re bringing in fresh catch throughout the day. Dining on local fish, lobster, shrimp, or octopus is an absolute must when visiting this city by the sea.  El Timon  is known for offering some of the best service and seafood in town. The atmosphere is a bit more refined, the views are unparalleled, and the seafood is always cooked to perfection. Try the fresh grilled octopus or  Sopa de Mariscos.

La Lancha is where the locals and expats go when they’re seeking a top-notch seafood dish without the high tourist prices. The atmosphere is a lot simpler than El Timon. You won’t be given cloth napkins here, and the service is often slower. The seafood, however, is just as delicious.

Asados Juanita:

Asados Juanita is the ultimate place to eat classic Nicaraguan dishes in an authentic atmosphere. The chicken and pork are grilled fresh on the street for all to smell, and patrons dine in a modest interior setting, which is a restaurant in front, and the owner’s home in back. Bountiful dishes are served up for less than $5 each.

Local bars:

Drinking like a local in San Juan del Sur means heading to a beach bar and sharing an extra large  Tona  beer with friends. Walk along the  malecon  past the beach volleyball court and Eskimo ice cream shop, and you’ll notice the bars get much smaller. You’ll find unbeatable deals on the local beers  Tona  and  Victoria.  Forego ordering complicated cocktails here.

Henry’s Iguana:

You’ll find expats and Nicaraguans alike hanging out at the top level of Henry’s Iguana Beach Bar and Restaurant, taking in the view and unbeatable two-for-one happy hour specials. The cocktails are tasty and Henry’s often offers live music for sunset and well into the night.

Checking Out Town

It’s easy to get caught up eating, drinking, and mingling with the locals at the restaurants and bars above. Although, you’ll want to reserve plenty of time to check out the town’s most iconic sites. San Juan del Sur is home to one of the largest Jesus statues in the world, standing tall above the bay and offering some of the most impressive views in all of Central America. Have a taxi take you to the top of the hill, then walk the steps up to the statue. The view is worth working up a sweat. The entrance fee is roughly $3 for foreigners and water is often available for purchase too.

Walking throughout the town, admiring the brightly-colored buildings and cobbled streets, is enough to fill several hours of your day. Stop by the central market to take in traditional Nicaraguan sights, sounds, and smells, like fresh tortillas, the most colorful pinatas for sale, and vendors offering everything from avocados to pots and pans. This is also the best place to stock up on souvenirs. Fun t-shirts, dresses, shorts, and hats all cost roughly $5 or less here.

Nicaragua is a country that requires far more than a day to explore, but cruisers can experience a lot of culture in a single day trip away from San Juan del Sur. A popular cultural experience is to take one of many available tour buses or shuttles to the colonial town of Granada roughly 2 hours away. This ancient city offers a wealth of culture, from its iconic Cathedral of Granada (dating back to 1583) to its  Museo de Chocolate  and cigar factory,  Dona Elba Cigars .

San Juan del Sur is also famous for the countless postcard-worthy beaches that are within an hour’s drive (or less) of downtown. Take a taxi to Playa Hermosa to lounge in the hammocks, admire the expansive stretch of white sand, snack on fresh ceviche or  tostones con queso,  or try your hand surfing. The entrance fee is $3 per person, but clean bathrooms, lounge chairs, and outdoor showers make it worthwhile.

Similarly, visitors can venture to the closest surfing beaches to San Juan del Sur — Playa Maderas and Playa Remanso. Both offer a selection of beach bars and restaurants serving up fresh seafood and tourist-friendly dishes, like tacos and burritos. They’re also known for their shops and instructors offering affordable surfboard rentals and lessons. Rent a surfboard for the day and take an hour-long lesson with an expert for $30 total.

Fill Your Suitcases with Souvenirs

The central area of San Juan del Sur offers countless shops to stock up on souvenirs. Tourists often enjoy the trendy clothing available in shops like  Auric  and  San Juan Surf , but much cheaper souvenir clothing can be purchased in the central market. Handmade pottery, woven bracelets, wood work, and volcano-grown coffee are some of the most popular souvenirs to purchase here.

Preparing for a visit to San Juan del Sur means understanding that you’re probably going to fall in love. The welcoming locals, unmatched seafood, and one-of-a-kind Nicaraguan culture are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression, enticing you to come back for more.
