Background on the Burgundy Wine Region

Burgundy is such a legendary wine region that it’s home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites . The Côte de Nuits , one of the most well-known sub-regions in Burgundy, is a paradise for those seeking an intimate experience with the world of fine wines. Opting for a private tour here lets you experience the heart of Burgundy. It’s home to many of the region’s grand cru estates, where you can enjoy exceptional red wines straight from ancient wine cellars. It’s particularly celebrated for its Pinot Noir-based wines and prestigious wine estates, many of which produce wines that have aging potential far beyond those based in new world wine regions.

Aside from Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune stands out as another noteworthy wine destination known for its exquisite white wine, primarily crafted from Chardonnay grapes. Here, you can participate in private wine tours with the wine producers themselves. You’ll be guided through both large houses and family-run domains, uncovering the secrets of wine production that have been honed over centuries. Each wine estate in the Burgundy region is a story in itself, often tied to the rich history of the area, including the tumultuous times of the French Revolution and the evolution of viticulture through the ages. The best ways for wine lovers to experience the Burgundy include structured day trips or self-guided tours along the wine route. Whether it’s the Golden Slope of the Côte d’Or or the heart of Chablis, each area presents a unique story of grape varieties, wine production, and local traditions.

Burgundy is not just about tasting amazing wines; it’s about soaking up the culture and history of the area. From medieval villages, the historic Clos de Vougeot Castle, to the Côte Chalonnaise, every stop is a discovery. The region’s culinary delights, like the famous Beef Bourguignon, perfectly complement bottles of Pinot Noir. Venture past the stone walls of ancient domains, and into the heart of local life, enriched with fine wines, great food, and a treasure trove of history.

I waited 50 years to travel to France. I imagined every detail to make my dream trip come true. I needed help in making the dream a reality.

From my first phone call to IntoThe Vineyard and meeting Morgan, to actually sitting in a vineyard in Provence sipping a chardonnay, they held my hand and planned each beautiful step. They listened to me and tailored exactly the trip I wanted. I chose to do it as a solo trip but never felt alone. The accommodations, drivers, and details all made for a flawless first-time international trip.

Madison Dreith and her team did an outstanding job of arranging a memorable visit to the Bordeaux region of France, as well as a one-day "foodie" tour of Paris. It was so easy to enjoy the trip when we had drivers who knew the area to take us to the different wineries. The restaurants selected for us to have our lunches were outstanding as well. Into the Vinyard allowed us to fully enjoy our time in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Place de Palais

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour in Bordeaux. This tour was in August so we know it was a challenge. But their delivery was World Class. The service people lined up by Into the Vineyard were engaging, thoughtful and respectful. The two hotels, although small both in number of rooms and room size, were quaint. Their breakfasts and afternoon beverage arrangements were a nice touch. The specific wine tours had much more of an educational tone to them as compared with other wine tours we experienced previously. A unique aspect of the week was a side boat trip in Archachon. It was an interesting break from the wine tours and the boat captain was incredibly humorous. Recommend this tour and this tour company highly!

Ruinart Caves tight

Booked us an amazing trip to Champagne and Corsica. We were so impressed by the quality of the hotels they recommended and the guides they paired us up with. Not only did they arrange fantastic tours of well-known wineries but also small independent ones. Super professional and their attention to detail was great. Corsica was suggested to us and was everything we wanted and more!

Brad Jantz

We just had an amazing trip to France/Spain to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. I want to thank Into the Vineyard as they picked wonderful spots for us to stay along with some amazing adventures.

Colin heard our desires and was able to point us in the right direction so that we could enjoy the experience without being constantly on the move. The part I really appreciated was that we wanted wine activities, primarily in Bordeaux, but had enough experience to plan non-wine day tours for us in the other cities, such as a Tapas tour and a cheese/barkery/chocolate tour.

Jealously guarded traditions to discover.

More than perhaps any other French region, Burgundy reserves many secrets and jealously guarded traditions– ones that are difficult for tourists to access. This is why our Burgundy wine tours are so exceptional: they offer insight into the remarkable region’s history and distinctive cultural character, and give visitors access to local networks of vintnering professionals. The inhabitants of Burgundy– who have laid claim to a French “art de vivre” like no one else – are a fiercely proud group. Their mentality is perfectly summarised in the chorus of the French drinking song, “Fier d’être Bourguignon” (Proud to be from Burgundy).

In addition to being home to some of France’s finest vineyards and winemakers, Burgundy is an immense living history book , boasting numerous palaces, castles, cathedrals and abbeys. One Michelin guide book succinctly describes this region’s endless treasures: “Wherever you go in Burgundy, there’s a castle, a church, or a village to visit.”

Sébastien, our sommelier and guide, was incredible.

His knowledge of the wine of Burgundy and this region was absolutely precise. We could ask a question about the wine or the Burgundy region and receive a clear and specific answer. The best wine tour I could take.

A beautiful discovery, old-fashioned cobblestone streets, very typical market and local products that make you want to taste and buy everything… We visited the hospice and the patriarch’s cellars. Eggs meurette, beef bourguignon… A delicacy… I want to do it again!

Antonin, our guide, was very attentive. He knows his stuff very well and showed us some magical places, especially during the harvest period! He pampered us without overdoing it! In addition, he was on time and picked us up at the hotel in a very clean vehicle. We had a very pleasant time. Perfect tastings, especially at the Château de Marsannay.

Some estates may require advance reservations, especially during peak tourist seasons, so it's a good idea to plan ahead.

What time of year is best for wine tours?

France has a temperate climate that is largely influenced by the Atlantic weather systems. In the south, the climate is more Mediterranean while the north is affected by continental air mass. Burgundy sits at the junction in east-central France and so the weather can be varied at times.

The western hills of Burgundy tend to get more rainfall, while the eastern valleys are drier. Generally, across the region summers are hot and winters are cold and dark. The summer months promise long sunny days and is the peak time to travel for many holidaymakers. Though many travellers enjoy the shoulder season due to the milder climate. September to November is ideal for hiking, cycling and vineyard visits as it’s still pleasant and warm, and the vineyards will feature spectacular autumn colours. Spring is another great time, just before the summer rush begins.

Is Burgundy a day trip from Paris?

Yes, Burgundy can be visited as a day trip from Paris, but it's worth considering the travel time and what you'd like to experience during your visit.

By high-speed train (TGV), the journey from Paris to major cities in Burgundy like Dijon or Beaune takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, making it feasible for a day trip. However, keep in mind that this will give you limited time to enjoy the region's vineyards, wineries, and attractions.

If you're primarily interested in visiting one or two specific wineries or exploring a particular area of Burgundy, a day trip from Paris can be a rewarding experience. However, if you want to immerse yourself in the region's wine culture, it's worth considering spending at least a night or two in Burgundy to fully enjoy everything it has to offer.

While you're visiting Paris why not exploring Burgundy ? book your day tour with our local expert.

We will gladly drive you through the gold colored stone villages and stop to admire the views, visit villages (Oingt, Bagnols, Beaujeu, Brouilly) and of course meet with passionate winegrowers. If you wish, we can also organize a balloon flight over the vineyards.

You can either choose this flight early in the morning to admire the sunrise over the Alps or later on the day to watch the twilight casting across the vineyards. The flight lasts for approximately 60 to 90 minutes. To make the moment even more magical and unforgettable, a breakfast/aperitif with local products will be served at the end of the flight.

Your driver will pick you up at your hotel or the Lyon-Saint Exupery Airport and will head south. After a short thirty-minutes ride, you will arrive to Ampuis, the Mecca of the northern Côtes du Rhône where the very well known Côte Rotie vineyards are located.

If you wish, we can go further down south and drive through the very well known Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards. The biggest wine producers will welcome you along with smaller one but brought together by the same passion: their profession.

Meursault, Pommard, Romanée Conti, Montrachet, are those names ringing any bell ?

Burgundy is the homeland of Pinot Noir. From this variety of grapes come the well-known Burgundy wines. After driving through the Beaujolais, we will arrive in the Mâconnais known for great white wines such as Saint Véran or Pouilly Fussé and located close to the archeological site of Solutré. Due to this closeness, there is also a possibility to make a detour via the Abbey of Cluny. Heading north, we will arrive to the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise (Rully Givry).

burgundy wine tour from lyon

Feeling hungry? We can stop in Chagny to a famous gastronomic restaurant called « Lameloise ». If you prefer a lighter meal, do not worry; we also know a lot of less fancy restaurants where you can equally enjoy yourself. The ride continues and we will head north and arrive in the middle of the vineyards of the Côte de Beaune with villages such as Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Monrachet or Volnay and Pommard. We will then go to Beaune , capital of the Burgundy wine where the famous Hotel Dieu is located and the Hospices de Beaune auction, which occurs every year on the third Sunday of November. Once we go through Beaune, we will also pass by several villages located in the Côte de Beaune such as Aloxe Corton, Ladoix and we will arrive to la Côte de Nuits with villages such as Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanée (where comes from the really prestigious wine Romanée Conti), Flagelle Echezeaux, Chambolle Musigny, Gevrey Chambertin and Marsannay, last village before arriving in Dijon.

If you fancy it and are still « thirsty » of discoveries, we will continue our trip until Auxerre and the Chablis vineyards, well known for producing dry white wines.

burgundy wine tour from lyon

Don't miss out on this incredible wine adventure!

Why book a wine tasting in lyon instead of a vineyard tour.

If you want to increase your knowledge, whether you're a connoisseur or a novice, our wine tastings are for you.

Visiting wineries is awesome, we know! But do you ever come away feeling like you really leveled up your knowledge? We hear people tell us again and again how they always seem to forget everything they were told on winery tours. This is because sampling 10 of the same wine type isn't a great way to learn about wine as a whole.

At Lyon Wine Tastings, we present you with a comparative tasting, which is how we learned about wine.

Each of the wines chosen for our comparative lineup are totally different, so we can deeply delve into wine tasting, winemaking techniques, grape varieties, terroir, and more.

By comparing different grapes and different regions, you expand your palate and knowledge way more than you do by only trying one type of wine.

If you do have time to do both while you're in Lyon, a tasting with us will set you up for much deeper learning the next time you go on a winery tour.

Praise for Lyon Wine Tastings

Shaun goog le reviews december 2022 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

Definitely recommend!

The wine tasting with Caroline was a phenomenal experience! Won't ruin the surprise with too many details but it was a great experience from start to finish; very fun and educational! Have done wine tastings before but this was definitely a unique experience and really enjoyed both the wine and getting to hang out with Caroline!

Frequently Asked Questions

fall-caroline-2.jpg

Q: Will we be full after our tasting?

A: You will be full and might need a small nap, but you'll still want to make dinner plans. Happy to give clients restaurant recommendations!

Q: I have dietary restrictions, will there be food for me?

A: If you let us know in advance of our tasting, we can accommoda te you with ease. It's no big deal for us to make you a gluten free, vegan, or vegetarian spread. Whatever your restriction is, we are more than happy to create you a delicious spread as long as you 🚨let us know in advance🚨.

Q: What language are the tastings in?

A: Lyon Wine Tastings are in English, but Franglais can be accommodated.

Q: Where do you get your wines from?

A: We get most of the wines directly from the vineyards, some we buy from trusted distributors.  Learn more about our  suppliers here.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A: We understand that life happens. You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance with a full refund of your ticket price. I also accept re-bookings.

Q: How do we get to our tasting?

A: Lyon is very walkable! The apartment is in the Croix-Rousse neighborhood, which is on top of a giant hill. It's a beautiful walk up ancient staircases filled with artisan boutiques, street art, secret passageways, and even an abandoned Roman ampitheater, but it is still 15 minutes of stairs if you don't stop and take in the scenery. Walking will set you up to really deserve all this wine and cheese, but you can also take the Metro C from Hôtel de Ville straight up to the Croix-Rousse station and walk 3 minutes from there. We won't judge, we do it all the time.

Add 15 minutes to any Uber ride you plan to take in Lyon, trust us.

Q: When is the tasting? How long does it last?

A: Tastings begin at 5pm and run for 2 hours. Please be on time, it's tough on us if you're early because I'll still be setting up, and it's tough on the group if you're late because the whites go cold!

Q: Should we eat before our tasting?

A: Please do! It's never good to drink a lot on an empty stomach. And you'll be drinking a lot of wine!

Lyon-Wine-Tastings-Table.jpg

Q : My dates aren't showing up in the calendar.

A: We are probably out of town, but email us just in case!

Q: Will I be drunk at the end of my tasting?

A: That depends a lot on you, there is plenty of food but also plenty of wine. For some people that is a lot, for some it's just right! We strongly discourage you from planning to drive afterwards.

Q: Can I bring my kids to your tastings?

A: Children are not invited to my tastings for logistical and legal reasons. Mostly it's cause it's a studio, there's nowhere to put kids and we don't have any electricity in the cellar so they wouldn't be very happy down there either.

The drinking age in France is 18, and we will not accept anyone under that age. We reserve the right to ask for ID to verify the age of anyone looking suspicious and to kick them out if they can't provide it!

Q: Is Caroline’s dog home during the tastings?

A: Buffy can be there when she hosts her tastings. She is a hypoallergenic (non-shedding) cockapoo. She's 2 years old and very energetic, and she loves you!

If you are not comfortable with dogs for any reason it's easy enough for her to NOT be at the tasting. No pressure!
