Visiting Beaune France Burgundy: Wine Tasting Tour Itinerary

Perfect 2-Day Itinerary: Beaune Burgundy Wine Region

Editor’s Note: This itinerary for visiting the Beaune region of France, (arguably the wine tasting capital within Burgundy), is written by one of our Winetraveler experts from a first-person perspective. This style of itinerary offers unique insight into why visiting these regions can be so special. Sometimes unexpected experiences can be the best.

I’ve mentioned before that my family had the opportunity to live in and travel through Europe as part of a family sabbatical. Well, when we mapped our route driving from Spain through France and to Germany , we had originally planned to spend time touring the city of Dijon. However, we never made it.

Instead, we stopped early owing to exhaustion and the waning patience of our two children (and thereby us) and opted to stay a few days in the beautiful village of Beaune . Located in the heart of the Burgundy wine region , it really made more sense for us as Winetravelers anyway. So while we went wine tasting in Burgundy with kids in tow, this Burgundy itinerary also works for anyone.

Village of Beaune Burgundy

Truth be told, the reason we ended up staying three nights in Beaune, rather than moving on to Dijon, is owed entirely to the proprietor of the hotel we found by chance. We really hadn’t done our research on Beaune, as we expected to be in Dijon, but Hotel Le Home  had good reviews and was easy to find.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by our host Mathilde with much enthusiasm. A mother herself, she immediately recognized the deteriorating family situation and graciously offered us a suite of adjoining rooms for the price of one. It was off-season, and she had the availability, as well as tremendous empathy.

The arrangements worked perfectly as the kids had their space and we had ours. (I should note, this is also where our children hatched a plan to form their own country – no parents allowed – and wrote a constitution, laws, and monetary system and declared war with the enemy parents!) The months, and years, of ensuing laughter, comradery, and hours of entertainment, were all sparked by this happenstance stay owing to the graciousness of Mathilde.

The exquisitely dressed and very fashionable proprietor also spent a considerable amount of time with us mapping out a fabulous family itinerary for our two-day visit. She took the time to understand our interests and offer numerous ideas for both the children and adults from which we could easily choose to fill our days.

Outlined below are the options we chose to spend our days accommodating everyone’s interests and creating some amazing memories that will not soon be forgotten.

Wine Tours and Getting Around Beaune Burgundy

Vineyards in Beaune, Burgundy under a beautiful sky

Our situation was slightly different than most, as we arrived in Europe via Spain and ended months later in Italy. If you should find yourself in a similar situation, I highly recommend the long-term car rental program through Renault . We had unlimited mileage, an English GPS system, and insurance. And as a bonus, we were also able to rent an automatic transmission!

However, if like most, you’re traveling for days or weeks, Beaune is easily accessible by train from most major French cities. You can plan train travel in advance here . Or you can also rent a car at the airport , which will give you more flexibility and freedom. Beaune is only a three-hour drive from Strasbourg and Paris and just less than two hours from Lyon. Get updates on flight deals into France here .

Once you’ve made it to Beaune, we highly recommend utilizing some of the local knowledge to experience the region from a local’s perspective. One of our favorite privately guided day trips is offered by Melanie of My French Tour. She’ll take you around in a vintage car and customize your day based on your travel preferences. Plus, you’ll get to stop at locations and have experiences you would otherwise miss.

If you’re looking for more of a luxury experience, Bourgogne Gold Tour offers local expertise and stops at the most iconic wineries and sights across Burgundy. See it all from the comfort of a Mercedes Benz. This is one of Winetraveler reader’s favorites when visiting the region. The same company offers a full-day trip to both Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits . This is a special tour that can be customized, offered by local guides who really know the wines of the region. You’ll get to meet the winemakers and have one of the most immersive experiences in Burgundy.

Where to stay in beaune burgundy.

Obviously, I recommend Hotel Le Home , but Airbnb and TripAdvisor also provide numerous options for your stay from luxury accommodations including Hôtel Le Cep & SPA Marie de Bourgogne to more family-friendly, budget options like Accor Hotels’ Ibis in the city center  (with prices this low, splurge and opt for two rooms to offer a little more space with the kids!).

Wine Tasting in Beaune: Self-Guided Options

Marché aux vins.

7 Rue de l’Hôtel Dieu, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 25 08 20

A boutique wine shop located in Beaune’s city center, the Marché is a wonderful place to browse a plethora of regional wines, but also to take a self-guided tour through the caves beneath the shop. Although not a personal tour in the least, it’s a great option with kids. Upon purchase of the tour you receive a tastevin – a traditional tasting cup designed in Burgundy. Although not practical, it is rather romantic. You’re then directed to the cellars which you can explore at your leisure. Bottles are open throughout for you to pour your own samples (or as in our case, the children can pour as they pretend to be sommeliers – questionable parenting aside, our kids had a blast donning accents and spouting their “wine knowledge.”) The caves are fascinating to explore with their numerous rooms and even old church ruins.

Patriarche Père Et Fils

5-7 Rue du Collège/r Paul Chanson, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 24 53 78

A well-known producer in the region, Patriarche also offers self-guided tours which are often a great option with children as you can move at their pace. Interactive video terminals placed throughout the route will guide you through the wine cellars, their history and the great wines aged there. You can also taste a range of 10 Burgundy wines and seek advice from the wine consultants on-hand.

Louis Jadot

62 Rte de Savigny, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 26 31 98

A mere 10-minute walk from Hotel Le Home, Louis Jadot is a name synonymous with Burgundy and Beaujolais. Depending on your time and energy, you can opt for a guided tour or simply walk-in and taste as we did. The tasting room is open to all from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays. At 3 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and 10 a.m. on Saturday, scheduled visits to the winemaking and maturation cellars — followed by a tasting — are available by reservation.

Worthy of Your Time: More Places To Taste Wine in Beaune

Château de pommard.

15 Rue Marey Monge, 21630 Pommard, France

+33 3 80 22 07 99

Although today American-owned, Château de Pommard offers an exquisite wine tasting and fascinating tour of the caves and vineyards. We arranged this tour by appointment through our hotel and arrived a few minutes early. As we waited for the tour host, we were shown to a waiting area which doubled as a winemaking museum with years of wine making tools and equipment, including one of the largest wooden wine presses I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to get a feel for just how big it is, other than to say it’s easier to imagine some mythical giants using it rather than actual humans. As for the tour, it was short enough to keep the kids from getting antsy and informative enough that we walked away with a much greater understanding of the soils, vines, region and wine production (as well as several bottles of wine).

Where To Go Wine Tasting in Beaune, Burgundy, France

Maison Joseph Drouhin

7 Rue d’Enfer, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 24 68 88

Honestly, for me, it doesn’t get much better than the wines of Joseph Drouhin. For the last 139 years, Maison Joseph Drouhin has been in the hands of the Drouhin family , not an easy accomplishment with French estate laws. Today, however, the fourth generation leads the winery with a focus on terroir, exquisite quality and elegance. Production is also completely organic throughout their 90 different appellations. With a tasting room and cellar located in the heart of Beaune within the Duke of Burgundy’s Parliament building, a tasting and tour at Maison Joseph Drouhin is a fascinating discovery of history and wine. Tours are available by appointment only and include a personal tour through the most ancient cellars of Beaune followed by a tasting of six iconic wines from Maison Joseph Drouhin. During this approximately one and a half hour tour, you will also find ancient Roman remnants, nearly 2000 years old.

While the wines of Burgundy are renowned worldwide, I doubt many consider the region as a family destination. But whether you find yourself stopping en route to the Monkey Mountain in Alsace , or specifically plan to take your family to Burgundy because kids or not, it’s a great wine trip, the itinerary outlined here is how we mapped our days with kids in tow. To this day, these moments in Beaune remain a top highlight of our time overseas. Burgundy — and Beaune in particular — is a place you can have your cake and eat it too (or in this case wine and crepes!).

Where To Stay in Beaune France, What To See and Do | Winetraveler.com

Top Things to Do in Beaune Burgundy

Marché de beaune.

The weekly market at Beaune is a haven for foodies, held every Saturday morning in the town center. Local producers gather to showcase their finest cheeses, meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a wide variety of other mouthwatering delicacies. This is the perfect opportunity to indulge in the Burgundy region’s culinary culture, chat with the locals, and even pick up some ingredients for a picnic in the nearby vineyards.

Hospices de Beaune

Next, we continued with a visit to the famed Hospices de Beaune, a hospital that opened in the mid-15th century and was still treating patients as recently as the 1980s. The hospices were designed as a place to treat the poor and served as a model for the hospitals that would come afterward. The Hospice tour came with an audio guide for both adults and children, the children’s version is narrated by a fly and a snake. The fly — quite a morbid creature — described what it was like to drink the blood of patients who filled the barracks back in the early days of medicine. This generated rapturous laughter from our kids who were thoroughly entertained. (Bloodletting was also normal back in the day – eek!)

In all seriousness, the Hospices are a fascinating walk through history and have been supported over the years by a charity wine auction, featuring wines from prestigious vineyards that have been acquired or donated to the Hospices over time. The Hospices produce some of the best wines in Burgundy, and the auction raises millions of Euros to support itself and various other charities. For example, the year of our visit, the auction was held two days after attacks in Paris and generated over $12 million, with a third of that going to support the victims of the attacks.

Things To Do in Beaune - Edmond Fallot Moutarderie | Winetraveler.com

Edmond Fallot Moutarderie

Fallot makes Dijon-style mustard in the last family-owned Moutarderie in Burgundy and offers tours of the operations facility and museum, complete with a mustard tasting at the end. We must have tried more than 20 different flavors of mustard, most of which were very good and all packed a wallop of spice. The tour itself is entertaining with a decent amount of science and history lessons built in for the kids.

La Cave de l’Ange Gardien

For Winetravelers, a visit to La Cave de l’Ange Gardien is a must. This intimate and charming wine cellar offers tastings of some of the finest Burgundy wines, including rare and aged selections. The knowledgeable staff will guide you through your tasting experience, sharing stories of the region’s rich winemaking history and helping you discover your new favorite bottle.

Parc de la Bouzaize

From strolls around the pond and an afternoon spent on swings, to the exotic birds wandering the grounds, the Parc de la Bouzaize is a great place for the kids to burn off steam. It’s also a great place where they can play on the park equipment while you stroll hand-in-hand around the paths (all while keeping them in sight). And for the little ones, you may even spot Mother Goose!

Things to do in Beaune France with kids

Le Clos des Remparts

Nestled within the medieval city walls, Le Clos des Remparts is a beautiful and serene garden, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a moment of quiet reflection. This hidden gem is home to a variety of colorful flowers, lush greenery, and even an ancient Roman wall. For adventurers seeking a moment of tranquility amidst their busy itinerary, Le Clos des Remparts is an ideal escape.

Bike Tour Through the Vineyards

For those who crave a little more adventure, a guided bike tour through the picturesque vineyards surrounding Beaune is the perfect way to take in the breathtaking scenery. Several local companies offer half-day or full-day tours, but our favorite is operated by Bourgogne Velo Evasion , complete with a knowledgeable guide who will introduce you to the region’s winemaking traditions and the unique terroir that makes Burgundy wines so sought-after. Don’t forget to stop at a few wineries along the way to sample the local wines and savor the flavors of the region.

City Stroll

The town center of Beaune is a great place to stroll for shopping, art (including some works of Dalí), a tour through the Basilique Notre-Dame de Beaune or a ride on the free carousel. While I can’t recall any particular places we ate, I do know our children enjoyed the crepes, escargot, croque monsieur and good old fashioned hamburgers (actually made from ham!) with frites.

La Table de Levernois

For a truly unforgettable dining experience, make a reservation at La Table de Levernois, a Michelin-starred restaurant located just outside Beaune. The chef’s exquisite menu showcases the finest local ingredients, with each dish expertly crafted to delight the senses. The elegant atmosphere and impeccable service make this an ideal choice for a special occasion or a romantic evening out. Remember to pair your meal with a selection from their impressive wine list to complete the culinary adventure.

The Wines of Beaune

Burgundy reds are made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes and the whites from Chardonnay , so it’s easy to understand what you’re drinking and it’s a very distinctive experience focused on terroir. Compared to Bordeaux, the classification system is based on region rather than vineyard.

The most prestigious wines are single-vineyard, but many other wines draw from multiple vineyards from a single village, such as Beaune, or throughout the region. Burgundian wines are soft and approachable, easy to understand and very easy to drink. And you can absolutely experience them while traveling as a family.

Best Wine Tours from Lyon in 2024

A visit to Lyon, the capital of French gastronomy, would not be complete without indulging in the region's finest wines. France is famous for its wine culture, and it's an integral part of the French culinary experience. The elegant and historic city is blessed with several vineyards and wineries that produce exceptional wines, which are a delight to wine enthusiasts. Lyon is surrounded by beautiful vineyard regions that showcase a vast array of different wines. Whether you're looking for a half-day Beaujolais wine tour or a day trip to Rhône Valley, you have options. In this article, I've highlight some of the best wine tours you can take around Lyon and why they are worth exploring.

a blonde woman in a green shirt in a vineyard with a cockapoo puppy

Who am I to advise you? I'm an expert sommelier (WSET 4) who's lived in Lyon since 2017 and runs Lyon Wine Tastings , wine tastings in native English that cover Burgundy, the Rhône, and Beaujolais.

I know there are a lot of lists online, made up by faceless companies like Viator/Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide whose algorithms create pay-to-play rankings depending on how many bookings tour operators give them. I am recommending wine tour operators that I can vouch for, that have been around for years and are run by real experts. Third party sites like Viator take between 25 and 40% booking fees. Please book directly to support independent local businesses.

Keep in mind that a wine tour will take up most of your day and require lots of time in the car, even a half-day tour. If you want to learn about all of the wines that surround Lyon, including the rarest and most expensive wines in the world, Burgundy, then you might want to enjoy an afternoon wine tasting in the heart of Lyon with me instead. If you do have time to do both, doing my educational tasting first will set you up to make the most of your time with winemakers, engaging more deeply with your newfound knowledge.

What to Expect on a Wine Tour from Lyon

When it comes to wine, there are few better places to explore the picturesque vineyards than Lyon. As the capital of French gastronomy, this beautiful city is surrounded by some of the country's most renowned wine regions, including Burgundy. In this article, I'll take a closer look at what to expect on a wine tour from Lyon, exploring some of the top tours you can book. Whether you're a seasoned sommelier or simply looking for a fun and informative day out, there's plenty to discover on a wine tour from Lyon.

The group wine tours that leave from Lyon will be run by native French speakers and will be in both French and English for both French and English speaking guests.

A wine tour from Lyon will either visit the Northern Rhône or Beaujolais. Both of these vineyard areas are close to Lyon, about an hour away in either direction. I do not recommend trying to do a day trip to Burgundy from Lyon, unless you want to spend 6 hours + in the car. As it is, any wine tour from Lyon will include at least 3 hours of driving, including driving between locations.

Options include half day, full day, private, and group tours. Read on to discover my favorite tour companies that do wine tours from Lyon.

If spending a big part of the day in the car doesn't appeal to you (especially if you're just in town for a couple days), you can book an exploratory wine tasting featuring all of our local wines, including Burgundy, right in the heart of Lyon.

Visiting the Northern Rhône from Lyon

The Northern Rhône is one of the most prestigious regions in France for good reason. Its vineyards are known to produce some of the best full-bodied red wines in the world, with a flavor profile that is rich, complex, and wonderfully earthy. During wine tours from Lyon, visitors can expect an hour drive to the terraced vineyards of the Northernmost appellation of the Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie.

Most tours will drive an hour to start in Côte-Rôtie and visit the largest and most famous producer, Guigal, who have a tasting room and a wine museum. You will not be able to visit the winery itself. The reality is that the top producers in Côte-Rôtie like Jamet, Stephane Ogier, or Rostaign, do not accept tourists as visitors. While there are a handful of producers who do tasting room visits, even fewer will see you meeting winemakers or touring the winery.

This applies throughout the region, as it is not particularly developed for tourism and they produce miniscule quantities of wine, which are allocated, so they barely have any wine to sell you. It's rough! If you want to visit the wineries of the prestigious Hermitage, you will need to travel another hour South down the Rhône.

Visiting Beaujolais from Lyon

The Beaujolais wine region is known for its fruity, bright reds, and makes for an excellent day trip from Lyon. The vineyards of Beaujolais are perched on the hillsides, with views across the valley sometimes straight through to the Alps. Visitors can explore charming villages and family wineries, stroll through beautiful vineyards, and sample delicious wines that are perfect for pairing with Lyon's famous cuisine.

A close up of a vineyard bud with hills in the background in Beaujolais France

A tour will drive about an hour North and likely stay around the less prestigious, southern part of Beaujolais, the beautiful Pierres Dorées, or Golden Stones, named after the lovely yellow stone the villages are built from. You can expect much more access to winemakers in Beaujolais, they have much more time for visitors and are more welcoming than the producers in the Northern Rhône.

The wines can be quite simple reds, but the convivial atmosphere more than makes up for it, and it truly is stunning countryside! The superior wines of Beaujolais tend to be located in the Crus of Beaujolais, further north. The producers here are still just as friendly, but produce more powerful and finer wines.

Personally, I'd take a Beaujolais tour over a Northern Rhône tour any day, I think the people are way nicer and the landscape is more beautiful. While the wines may be less prestigious, they are still delicious.

Visiting Burgundy from Lyon

Is a terrible idea. It's really not close enough for a day trip.

Types of Lyon Wine Tours

Lyon, the capital city of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France, is renowned for its prestigious wines, excellent cuisine, and beautiful vineyards. A wine tour in Lyon is an excellent way to discover the region's rich wine culture and explore its stunning vineyards. Visitors can embark on different types of wine tours, each offering a unique experience from half-day tours to full-day itineraries. If you don't have time to spend most of the day out of the city, consider a wine tasting in Lyon with me, where you can explore Beaujolais, Burgundy, and the Northern Rhône in one afternoon.

Private Wine Tour from Lyon

Private wine tours offer an intimate and customizable experience compared to group tours. Private tours are tailored to the interests and preferences of the group, making it a more personalized and enjoyable experience. Additionally, private tours provide flexibility as it allows participants to explore the region at their own pace and schedule.

A private wine tour from Lyon is a memorable experience that provides an intimate and exclusive insight into the region's wine tradition and history. The customizable nature of private tours allows participants to enjoy a tailored experience while appreciating the vineyards' beauty and tasting some of Lyon's most exceptional wines. Book a private wine tour in Lyon and enjoy a truly unique and unforgettable experience in one of the world's most beautiful wine regions.

All of the operators below offer private tours, as do I! I am more expensive than them though because it's not my primary business and I have to hire a driver. My private tours are highly custom and include a chauffeur, visiting 3 top producers, and a gastronomic lunch. Contact me directly with your dates and the number of folks for a quote.

Group Wine Tour from Lyon

If you're a solo traveler or a group of friends looking to make new friends, a group wine tour is the perfect way to experience the wine regions around Lyon. With a knowledgeable guide and fellow wine enthusiasts, you'll explore some of the best vineyards in the region while learning more about the history and culture of wine-making.

One of the benefits of taking a Group Wine Tour is the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who share a passion for wine. You'll be able to ask questions and discuss tasting notes with others, making the experience more social and engaging. Additionally, a knowledgeable guide will be there to answer any questions you may have about the wines, the vineyards, or the region's history.

Most importantly, a group tour will be significantly cheaper than a private tour as you're sharing the cost with others.

Half-Day vs Full-Day Wine Tour from Lyon

In my opinion a half-day will be rushed, and you won't have as immersive an experience. I recommend full day tours! If you don't have time for that, a tasting with me is the perfect solution that only takes up 3 hours of your time.

The Best Wine Tour Operators from Lyon

There are a lot of wine tours online these days, and honestly I have no idea who they are or where they're finding their wine experts! What I can tell you is that contacts matter, as does experience. The operators that you can trust to give you the real deal experience are these three. Sadly nobody's giving me commission but they totally should right?

Rhône Trip Wine Tours from Lyon

Rhône Trip is run by a fellow WSET Diploma graduate, Julie Tran, who is awesome. This small team run tours from Lyon to the Northern Rhône and also Beaujolais. I highly recommend Rhône Trip! Rhône Trip does group tours and private tours, full-day and half-day tours.

Lyon Wine Tastings

Ok so I don't do a lot of tours, I only do private, custom, high end ones when someone reaaaally wants it, but if you want to level up your wine knowledge with the full attention of an expert Somm, then my Wines of Lyon tasting is exactly what you need.

My tastings are awesome because I share all of the different wines of the many regions that surround Lyon, and I don't waste any of your time in a car. I also have A/C which doesn't suck. And a super cute dog named Buffy who sometimes joins us for our tasting.

My tastings are deeply educational but also super fun, and you will leave knowing a lot more about wine than you started with!

In conclusion, there are many great wine tour operators to choose from in Lyon, depending on the type of experience you're looking for. For a more intimate and educational experience, I highly recommend either taking a private tour with me or going for a tasting. Happy tasting!

After driving through the Beaujolais, we will arrive in the Mâconnais known for great white wines such as Saint Véran or Pouilly Fussé and located close to the archeological site of Solutré. Due to this closeness, there is also a possibility to make a detour via the Abbey of Cluny. Heading north, we will arrive to the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise (Rully Givry).

If you prefer a lighter meal, do not worry; we also know a lot of less fancy restaurants where you can equally enjoy yourself. The ride continues and we will head north and arrive in the middle of the vineyards of the Côte de Beaune with villages such as Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Monrachet or Volnay and Pommard. We will then go to Beaune , capital of the Burgundy wine where the famous Hotel Dieu is located and the Hospices de Beaune auction, which occurs every year on the third Sunday of November. Once we go through Beaune, we will also pass by several villages located in the Côte de Beaune such as Aloxe Corton, Ladoix and we will arrive to la Côte de Nuits with villages such as Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanée (where comes from the really prestigious wine Romanée Conti), Flagelle Echezeaux, Chambolle Musigny, Gevrey Chambertin and Marsannay, last village before arriving in Dijon.

If you fancy it and are still « thirsty » of discoveries, we will continue our trip until Auxerre and the Chablis vineyards, well known for producing dry white wines.

  • corneliusc700 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Time down in the Rhone Took the Northern Rhone full day tour with Raphaelle November 2023. She was very knowledgeable, engaging and brought us to the most delicious restaurant for lunch. We tried 3 different locations ranging from single family winery, small operation scaling up and a coop of over 200 growers. Wine was delicious with a wide variety showing the range of the valley. The entire trip was full of laughs, good answers and I can say I learned a lot on this trip. Cannot wait to come back to the region to explore more and cannot suggest taking a tour with Raphaelle more. Read more Written November 25, 2023
  • Knappfamily 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Eddie is the best! My husband and I had a fantastic time with Eddie traveling to three wineries in the Beaujolais region. Immediately he had some fun conversation starters/games in the van to get the group aquainted. It was a great ice breaker and from that point on we could tell he had a great knowledge of the region and the wines we were going to taste. This wine tour is not just about drinking wine but experiencing history, architechture and culture of an incredible area of France. On our second stop we had a great lunch. The restaurant had a great selection of soups and main courses and a fix prix selection of menus. I insist on ordering the lamb if it is available. Eddie is the type of guy you would invite to your house for a dinner party any chance you get. We feel we have a friend in France for sure and hope to stay in touch as he had wonderful recommendations for restaurants etc in Lyon. We are big fans of this wine now and once home ordered a case of the amazing Rose from Matthieu at Chateau des Bachelards. One bit of advice I will give you is when making your reservation please be sure to share a number where Eddie can call you if he is looking for you at the meeting point. He is very diligent and concerned about making sure he collects all of his guests to get on the road and make the most of the day. It's a full day and he packs a lot in so be early! Merci Eddie! • 60618traveler 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Small group experience of family run vineyards Wonderful experience, the vineyards were small, family run businesses that I would never have found on my own. Eddy, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and helpful, and was very patient with my 85 year old father, who I brought with me on the tour. The small group size made it personable, and it was an experience I won’t forget. I highly recommend this tour. Read more Written October 19, 2023
  • Travel741138 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Real insiders tour of Beaujolais! Eddie was a knowledgeable and personable guide (fantastic!) who is really well connected with the local Beaujolais wineries. We really felt like we were getting the inside tour with family and friends! The stop at the small medieval town was real treat with a fabulous view and the lunch location Eddie picked was truly memorable!! • Marioncronin 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A relaxing and informative day out This was a nicely-paced, wonderful day in the Northern Rhone vineyards. We learned so much about the Syrah, Viognier, and other lesser known varietals. Our guide, Mathilde, was very knowledgeable, organized and helpful. We visited a small family winery first, with tastings, then a delicious three course lunch in a lovely restaurant on the banks of the Rhone River (we paid for our meals). Then an amazing tour of another winery in the Saint Joseph area with a fantastic sommelier who was full of information, funny stories and passion for his craft. Finally, Mathilde took us up to the top of Hermitage Hill for a 360 view of the Northern Rhone river valley with white and red Hermitage wines served from the back of her van - great tailgating, thanks, Mathilde! Returned at exactly 5 o’clock, good driving. Definitely recommend this tour. Read more Written October 10, 2023
  • SamS967 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful, but better to go with a group tour First of all, I would recommend doing a group tour. I was brave and foolish enough to drive and it was quite difficult even with Google Maps. We started in the morning from central Lyon and after navigating narrow streets and tunnels and heavy rush hour traffic, we finally were driving next to the river. We stopped at the first wine village on the map but everything was closed. So we put the next stop on the GPS and drove. Much to our dismay, we ended up back in central Lyon. The lesson: be very careful when entering destinations as one wrong letter can send you to the wrong place. We re-started and drove straight to Villafranche-sur-Saone. Almost no one in this small town spoke any English, so it was hard finding our way around and the signage was non-existent. We had lunch and then located the tourist office who were very helpful. She called a few wineries and found one where we could do tastings and gave us detailed directions. We then did the scenic drive along the Saone River and did some wonderful wine tasting. We stopped at Chatillon d'Azergues, where the wine maker and his assistant were super friendly and helpful and we ended up doing a free wine tasting. The wines were great and we also ended up buying a couple of bottles. On their recommendation, we then drove to the gorgeous medieval town of Oingt. This town is beautiful with an old walled city, medieval churches, houses, cobblestone streets and killer views of the Beaujolais region, as it is perched on a hill. Fortunately, the drive back to Lyon was quick (on the freeway) and uneventful. Read more Written October 10, 2023
  • lauramJ1431GR 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour - time well spent Mathilde was fantastic! We really enjoyed her selection of vineyards in the Northern Rhône wine region. If you’re not familiar with the difference between Northern Rhône and other regions - that’s OK. She explained the regions and the tour was easy to follow for those without a lot of wine knowledge. However, for those who know the region will really appreciate the winery selection and will learn a lot too. Lunch was very well selected, too. Overalll, fantastic day - highly recommend! • SienaDix 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A fine way to spend the afternoon.... This was in essence a last-minute tour that we booked. Having done many tours of various French wine regions over the years, wasn't too proud to admit that I frankly didn't know much about Rhone valley wines, so didn't know what to expect. The 4 hour tour was great in the sense that you quickly enter into a beautiful area of France --- the northern Rhone valley is gorgeous and you get a great view during the tour. An older family owned winery and a more modern winery gives you a fairly good sense of what the northern Rhone valley wines are all about --- traditional in the main, but there is a little bit of experimentation that was interesting. Each region has its own specialty, ensuring that every wine lover’s tastes are catered to. Within the Burgundy wine region, the Côte de Nuit appellation is known for its pinot noir red wines, the Côte de Beaune for its fine chardonnays, and the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais vineyards for their aligoté and pinot noir wines. The Beaujolais wine region of the Saône Valley has the best gamay wines, while south of Lyon, the hilly vineyards of Côte Rôtie, Côtes du Rhône, and Chateauneuf du Pape in the Rhone Valley are best known for their rich reds—most notably syrah and grenache.

Burgundy in depth.

Get to know Burgundy

Eastern France’s Burgundy is a prime winegrowing country. This area was once covered by a large sea, leaving today’s vineyards with unusual mineral-rich limestone and unique terroir . Combined with the vineyards’ privileged location and a favorable climate, the area produces some of the world’s great wines. Wine aficionados will know the names Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Beaune, Mâcon, and Nuits-Saint-Georges AOCs. Walking through the vines with a winemaker is an unforgettable experience that gives insight into the fascinating play between grape varieties, terroir, and cultivation and production techniques that influence the final product. Many of the winegrowing techniques were developed and the plots divided by monks a millennium ago.

Beyond its wine, Burgundy boasts a rich history. Grandiose architect, charming villages, and an impressive concentration of medieval castles and churches are evidence of that history. The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, the Hospice de Beaune, and the Fontenay Abbey are but a few of the region’s great monuments. The Benedictine Cluny and Cistercian Citeaux monasteries were two of Europe’s great medieval monasteries, growing to wield tremendous religious and intellectual influence throughout the continent.

Beautiful view of famous Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay Burgundy, France

Among the French, Borgogne is loved for its nature. It boasts rolling hills, navigable canals, pristine lakes, and extensive cycling trails. Sports and nature enthusiasts can go walking, biking, rafting, canoeing, and sailing. The Morvan National Park is full of dense woodland and majestic flora and fauna.

From the 10th through the 15th centuries, the Duchy of Burgundy and the Free Country of Burgundy were separated from France. The large and powerful kingdoms flourished. Their territories grew to include parts of modern-day Alsace and Lorraine, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. They were a fearsome enemy of France and an ally of the English during the Hundred Years’ War. When the last Duke Charles the Bold was killed in 1477 the kingdom was annexed into France. The wealthy Burgundians left behind stunning castles, churches, and half-timbered houses.

As a world-famous wine region, it comes as no surprise that Burgundian cuisine incorporates lots of wine. Be sure to try to stick to your-ribs boeuf bourguignon (a stew of beef, mushrooms, onions, and carrots in wine). Coq au vin is a similar dish made with chicken. You can also find wine poached eggs in the surprising oeufs en meurette .

When to go: Despite the region’s beauty, Burgundy remains off-the-beaten-path for many tourists, even during summer months. The long sunny days make this a beautiful time to tour the area. Harvest season, from August to October, is a wonderful time to come with beautiful fall colors.

By train: Dijon is a 1 1/2-hour ride from Paris by high-speed TGV train.

By car: The region is about a 2-hour drive from Lyon and 3 1/2 hours from Paris.

What to Eat and Drink:

Cheese: Local epoisses has a reputation as one of the world’s stinkiest cheese. Try it if you dare!

The region also boasts Brillat-Savarin , Trou du Cru , and Mâconnais giving Burgundy 4 AOC appellation cheeses.

French cheese and bread

Wine: Splurge on any of the wines from the Côtes d’Or , Côtes de Nuits , or Côtes de Beaune for the very best that Burgundy has to offer. Burgundy wines exclusively use Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties.

On a tighter budget Beaujolais from further south are worth trying. They’re famous for being the first wines harvested each year. Their release in November is an excuse to party. Drink them young.

Winetasting in Beaune

Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy. Surrounded by prized vineyards, Beaune has wonderful wine bars and cellars to explore. Its 15th-century Hospices de Beaune is one of France’s great buildings, with beautiful half-timbered galleries and an ornate, polychrome glazed-tile roof. The hospice itself owns a prestigious wine estate whose wines are auctioned off during the Les Trois Glorieuses festival every November. During the summer the most important monuments in the city are illuminated by colorful projections that recount Beaune’s history.

Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne

Dating to 1937, the Grands Crus’s tour was France’s first official wine route. It is still one of its most remarkable, stretching through 37 postcard-perfect villages and 40 miles of lush Côte d’Or vineyards. Hundreds of vineyards are accessible from  small family-owned producers or famous estates. The price and quality of the wine, in Burgundy, is determined by the excellence of the soil and fields on which the grapes were grown. The route’s most famous stops are Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Pommard. Only the most venerated labels receive the distinction “Grand-Cru.” This rare title confirms the astonishing vinicole quality of the best French wines.

burgundy wine tour from lyon

Dijon was the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy and one of medieval Europe’s great cities. It is still a beautiful place to visit with the stately Ducal Palace, soaring Philippe le Bon Tower, and the medieval half-timbered houses in the city center. Perhaps the city is best known today for being a gastronomic destination. Bœuf bourguignon and coq au vin are two of its most famous dishes that use the local wines. It is also famous for its mustard, gingerbread, and ham. Explore its food yourself in the covered Les Halles food market or Michelin-star restaurants. The city makes for a great gateway to the Côte de Nuits vineyards.
