In-person visits typically consist of a 30-minute Queens presentation followed by an hourlong guided tour led by a Royal ambassador (we guarantee you’ve never seen someone walk backwards so confidently). 

Each tour is personalized by your guide, who is a real-life Queens student. And to top it all off, you’ll meet with an admissions counselor to answer any additional questions you may have.

Admitted Student Events are your chance to get an insider’s look at life as a Royal. As an admitted student, you’ll get a special tour of some of our campus’ most popular spots. Plus, you’ll get to tour our residence halls, learn more about financing your education, and attend a Royal Celebration (complete with Queens swag)!

1 Davidson College

This small liberal arts school’s buildings are woven throughout town, offering numerous opportunities for inspiration. As a National Arboretum , the setting is perfect for paths that showcase more than 3,000 trees and shrubs. Along with Mother Nature’s works of art, sculptures by artists Magdalena Abakanowicz, Auguste Rodin and Yinka Shonibare are also admired all across campus. Three galleries with a full schedule of exhibitions can be found at the Visual Arts Center. Just up the road is The Farm at Davidson , which grows produce for the college’s dining services. To caffeinate like you're preparing for an all-nighter, swing by the original Summit Coffee on Main Street; the co-owners are Davidson alumni.

2 Duke University

Any visitor to Durham can find inspiration in the unique activities found on Duke’s campus. The Sarah P. Duke Gardens draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year thanks to 55 acres of Italian-style terrace gardens, a rose garden and a koi pond topped with water lilies. For a one-of-a-kind stop, book a tour at the Duke Lemur Center , a world leader in the study, care and protection of the endangered mammals. And for sports lovers, the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed Duke University Golf Club is recognized as one of the Southeast's best, while the Duke Basketball Museum brings the storied program to life on a daily basis.

3 Elon University

A designated botanical garden, Elon’s 656-acre campus is a nature lover’s haven. Follow the campus tree map to find 125 trees along a 1.25-mile walk through campus, visit the community garden and schedule a tour of the school’s 15-acre solar farm, part of the Environmental Center at Loy Farm . Then head downtown to The Oak House for a beverage and a bite and check out some local shops, or grab a pastry to go and picnic at the nearby Beth Schmidt Park , which has beautiful walking trails, a playground and garden. Treat yourself to a cup or cone at Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream before calling it a day. Staying the night? The Inn at Elon is the choice: All profits from the inn are dedicated to funding student scholarships.

4 North Carolina A&T

NC A&T is the nation’s largest HBCU. The university played a central role in the Civil Rights Movement when four students led a sit-in at Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro in 1960, and the location now operates as the International Civil Rights Center & Museum . After the museum tour, head to the Dudley Building on campus to see the A&T Four Monument, which honors the freshmen who led the sit-in. Visit in fall and catch a football game to see the famous Blue and Gold Marching Machine, whose high-energy performances have been getting fans on their feet for years.

5 North Carolina Central University

The NCCU campus is included in the National Register of Historic Places for good reason – it’s been a key piece of Durham history for more than 100 years. As you walk among the historic buildings throughout campus, be sure to check out a newer addition, the Centennial Chapel and Garden, built in 2010 to celebrate the university’s centennial. It’s a great place to pull out picnic supplies from Durham Co-op Market before exploring more of downtown. Start with West Parrish Street, often referred to as Black Wall Street because of its role as a hub for Black-owned businesses and economic growth in the early 1900s. Then visit the Museum of Durham History or any of the History Groves – groupings of native trees planted to honor those who shaped the community. Speaking of community, the ties are strong at the Hayti Heritage Center , which hosts events, programs and festivals.

6 North Carolina State University

NC State is the ideal mix of city and rural life. On the Centennial Campus, Lake Raleigh Woods is designated a “hallowed place,” meaning its past helps forge the future of research and education. The 96-acre forest welcomes researchers as well as bird-watchers and those looking for a peaceful stroll. Down the road from main campus is the JC Raulston Arboretum and butterfly garden, where the collection of plants has attracted about 60 species of butterflies and moths over the years. If you’re looking for a place to reunite with old friends from school, the Lonnie Poole Golf Course – the only collegiate course in the world designed by Arnold Palmer – is the perfect spot.

7 Shaw University

The first HBCU in the South and among the oldest in the nation, Shaw sits in the heart of the historic district downtown – and its ties to history remain strong, from the stunning memorial garden on campus to its multiple historic landmark buildings. Head to Estey Hall – built in 1874, it’s the oldest surviving Shaw building and the first structure built for the higher education of African American women. Because of Shaw’s central location, walk or drive from campus to many nearby favorites. Refuel Southern-style at Big Ed’s and then keep the fun going – kids of all ages love Pullen Park's amusement rides, paddle boats and swimming. Families can enjoy awesome time indoors at the nearby Marbles Kids Museum or NC Museum of Natural Sciences . If your kids are of the four-legged variety, Dorothea Dix Park has an area just for dogs (and plenty of open-air activities for humans too).

8 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Visit the country’s first public university for a few firsts of your own. For basketball fans, Carolina Basketball Museum is a must, where names like Dean Smith and Michael Jordan might ring a bell. The Ackland Art Museum hosts a permanent collection of more than 19,000 works of art, while the Morehead Planetarium offers shows like “Carolina Skies,” a live star show that takes you on a journey through the nighttime sky. Most alumni will tell you a stroll along Franklin Street is a necessary intro to Chapel Hill life. For lunch, few things are better than a hot dog and old-fashioned soda at the legendary Sutton’s Drug Store . It’s been feeding hungry Tar Heels since 1923.

9 University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Just 15 minutes northeast of Uptown, UNC Charlotte boasts a 1,000-acre campus that’s still close to Charlotte’s vibrant NoDa, Plaza Midwood and South End neighborhoods. Start your visit with a walk through the botanical gardens , home to three different gardens with 16 collections. Over in the art department, check out three exhibition spaces in the Rowe Arts Building , which displays the work of students, faculty and visiting artists. For a good meal, students rave about Passage to India .

10 University of North Carolina at Greensboro

A stroll through this campus brings tons of visual intrigue, with architectural diversity, historic buildings and storied landmarks – like the 9-foot bronze statue of Minerva by artist James Barnhill, and The Rawk, a boulder painted and repainted with well wishes and announcements nearly every day. Speaking of art, make sure you head to Weatherspoon Art Museum in the heart of campus. Admission is free to its six galleries and sculpture courtyard, and coffee and baked goods are offered most weekdays. Find more inspiration at any of Greensboro’s outdoor oases, from the 17-acre Greensboro Arboretum to Gateway Gardens , a whimsical entryway to the city integrating elements of history, movement and play.

11 Wake Forest University

Recreate carefree college days at Davis Field by swinging under the towering trees or taking time for a picnic. For a learning opportunity, visit the only museum in North Carolina dedicated to the study of global cultures at the Museum of Anthropology . Catch up on a little botany 101 at the 134-acre Reynolda Gardens with beautiful woodlands, wetlands and a greenhouse. Don’t miss out on getting a unique souvenir at the Reynolda Village shops right next door. For your finale, enjoy a pitcher of beer at Shorty’s .

12 Winston-Salem State University

Wander through campus and admire public art sculptures, as well as massive murals by artist and North Carolina native John Biggers in the C.G. O’Kelly Library. The Diggs Gallery also operates as a cultural center with exhibitions and programs focused on African American and regional art (recognized by The Smithsonian as one of the nation’s best). If you’re looking for action: Every Saturday in spring and summer, Bowman Gray Stadium fills up the stands for short-track racing at NASCAR’S longest running weekly track. The whole family will love seeing multiple races at “The Madhouse.”

Tour North Carolina State University

With over 35,000 students enrolled, NC State offers bachelor’s degrees in 106 fields of study. A weekday two-hour tour includes a first-year information session.

Tour Duke University

This private university founded in 1892 is known for having a highly ranked business school and an elite basketball program. Weekday tours last just over an hour.

Afternoon, Day One

Tour University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

UNC-Chapel Hill is one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Notable alumni are former President James K. Polk and NBA All-Star Michael Jordan. Enjoy a group lunch on UNC’s campus at the Brinkhous-Bullitt Building: The Beach Café, Lenoir Hall or the Student Union. During a weekday tour, explore the Carolina Basketball Museum, which chronicles the history of UNC basketball.

Shop the Shoppes at University Place

Upon arrival in Charlotte, stop and enjoy dinner at Boardwalk Billy’s Raw Bar & Ribs overlooking the lake. Save room for dessert and head to Ninety’s Ice Cream & Sandwiches, a popular local hangout. Tour UNC Charlotte

UNC Charlotte opened in 1946 and is the third largest of the 17 institutions within the UNC System, and largest institution in the Charlotte region. Weekday tours are two hours and include a Q&A panel with enrolled students and admission staff along with a photo scavenger hunt featuring artifacts around campus.

Afternoon, Day Two

Tour Johnson & Wales University

This university is one of only four private campuses in the nation with more than 16,000 students. The weekday tour explores the prestigious culinary lab where visitors can see future chefs in action. To taste the food from current culinary students, visit Johnson & Wales’ dining hall Monday through Friday.

Experience the funky vibe of Asheville - visitors feel it the moment they begin strolling through Asheville’s vibrant city center – it’s an unmistakable mountain vibe that has beckoned tourists to this region time and again. The CATS LYNX Blue Line extension provides light rail service to the University’s main campus at two convenient locations: the J.W. Clay/UNC Charlotte Station and the UNC Charlotte Main Station. We encourage you to consider this option when planning your trip to the University. Information on train schedules and fares is available at our light rail website .

Parking on Campus

After entering campus at the main gate off of Hwy 49/University City Blvd., bear right at the traffic circle onto Mary Alexander Road. Robinson Hall will be the first building on your left. Continue past Robinson Hall until you see the entrance to East Deck 1 on your right.

Complimentary parking is available for performances at Robinson Hall and Rowe Recital Hall and for all Rowe Gallery openings.

Patrons may receive complimentary parking validation by presenting the ticket received while entering East Deck 1 to the Box Office staff in Robinson Hall or Rowe Arts Building. Parking validation is only offered to patrons of ticketed student, faculty, or visiting artist performances in these venues.

Directions to Venues on the UNC Charlotte Campus

To Robinson Hall : Upon parking,exit the deck, cross Mary Alexander Rd. at the crosswalk, and proceed straight along the wide brick path toward the center of campus. At the first walkway intersection, turn left. The back of Robinson Hall will be straight ahead, across the quad, and on the right. Walk straight along the side of the building and around the front to enter the main lobby.

To Rowe Arts Building: Upon parking, exit the deck, cross Mary Alexander Rd. at the crosswalk, and proceed straight along the wide brick path into the center of campus. Rowe Arts Building is on the left directly across from the Belk Plaza.

To Storrs Building: Upon parking, exit the deck, cross Mary Alexander Rd. at the crosswalk, and proceed straight along the wide path towards the center of campus. Storrs Building is the first building on your left.

UNC Charlotte Center City Building and Gallery

The Center City Building is located at 320 E. 9th Street at the corner of Brevard Street. 

Paid parking is available along Brevard Street and in area public lots.

Accessibility

Ada parking:  for easy pick up and drop off, patrons may use the circular drive at the front of robinson hall. ada accessible parking is also available in lot 28 adjacent to robinson hall..

Wheelchair & Companion Seating : Available for all performances in most price ranges. Four law enforcement officers killed while serving warrant in North Carolina

Four officers were fatally shot as a U.S. Marshals task force was serving a warrant at a home Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina, officials said. A suspected shooter was also dead.

A marshal and two local officers working with the fugitive task force were killed in the gunfire around 1:30 p.m. Gov. Roy Cooper  said that “two state Department of Adult Correction officers” had died.

The city's police chief announced Monday night that a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who had been wounded, Joshua Eyer, had also died.

"It was just last month I was in this very room congratulating Officer Eyer for becoming officer of the month in April," Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. "And he certainly dedicated his life and gave his life to serve our citizens."

The secretary of the state Adult Corrections Department identified two of the other people killed as Sam uel Poloche and William "Alden" Elliott , both of whom had been with the department for 14 years and were on the marshals task force.

In total, eight law enforcement officers were shot.

Jennings said the fallen officers were "heroes that were just simply trying to keep our community safe."

The violence broke out as the task force was serving a warrant on a suspect in possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The subject, who was not publicly identified, began shooting with a high-powered rifle, Jennings said. Task force members returned fire and killed the suspect in the home's front yard, he said.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police sergeant was on the task force but was not struck by gunfire, Jennings said. The sergeant called for backup, and that's when the four responding Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were shot, Jennings said.

Police were eventually able to clear the home, Jennings said. Two people inside, one of them 17 years old, were detained as persons of interest.

Officials believe two people fired at law enforcement, Jennings said.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, who spoke at Monday's news conference, said the community must honor the deputy marshals who lost their lives and the wounded officers.

"These are people that cared deeply about what they've done for our profession, and now today, we have to say to them how much we are grateful for what they have done," Lyles said.

Cooper, the governor, called the incident "tragic" and said the state is offering assistance.

He later offered his condolences to the families and co-workers in the "brutal attack."

President Joe Biden said Monday night of the slain officers: "They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us."

"We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded," the president said in a statement . He also called for more funding for law enforcement and for Congress to do more to combat gun violence.

Eyer, the CMPD officer whose death was announced Monday night, is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son, the police chief said.

Poloche is survived by a wife and two children, and Elliot and his wife were parents to one child, state Adult Correction Secretary Todd Ishee said in a statement.

CORRECTION (April 29, 2024, 6:40 pm ET): A previous version of this article misstated the number of U.S. marshals who were killed. One marshal was fatally shot and two local officers working with the marshals task force were also killed. (A fourth officer who was initially wounded later died.)

4 law enforcement officials killed, 4 injured in Charlotte, North Carolina, while serving warrants

Authorities have identified three of the slain officers.

Four members of law enforcement were shot and killed and four were wounded while they attempted to serve two warrants in Charlotte, North Carolina, police said Monday.

Around 1:30 p.m. local time, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force was serving active felony warrants for possession of a firearm by a felon and felony flee to elude on a male suspect at a residence on the 5000 block of Galway Drive in the city's North Tryon Division.

The man, later identified by authorities as Terry Clark Hughes, Jr, 39, allegedly began firing, striking multiple officers, police said.

The officers on the scene requested immediate backup. The suspect allegedly continued to fire as more officers arrived.

Hughes allegedly exited the residence with a firearm. Seeing Hughes as an “imminent deadly threat” officers fired on the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

Eight officers were hit with gunfire and transported to local hospitals.

Two females who were at the residence were taken to the Law Enforcement Center for interviews with detectives.

Three members of the task force were pronounced deceased at the hospital, officials said Monday night. Todd Ishee, North Carolina’s Secretary of Adult Corrections, confirmed in a statement that two of the task force members were 14-year Department of Adult Corrections veterans Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott. The third was not immediately identified.

“They loved their work, and were passionate about their roles in protecting our communities,” Ishee said in a statement.

Poloche is survived by a wife and two children, and Alden is survived by his wife and one child.

Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Officer Joshua Eyer was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries, authorities said. He was a six-year veteran of the force and is survived by a wife and 3-year-old child.

Four other law enforcement officials were injured in the shooting. Their names have not been released.

"The bravery of our officers that responded to the scene, knowing that they're going into gunfire is what I've been saying for many years, is in the face of danger. our people step up," Jennings said.

In a statement on social media, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said he was in touch with police about the shooting and has offered up state resources to help.

An emotional Mayor of Charlotte, Vi Lyles, said she heard from the White House, members of Congress and state officials offering their support.

"Your father, your husband, your friend, your neighbor ... and today they're not going home," she said. "You know three people lost their lives today."

Jennings said that in his 30-plus years in the department, he couldn't remember a day like this.

"To me, it's the most tragic one that I've been involved in," he said.

President Joe Biden said in a statement Monday night that the four officers who died "are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded."

Earlier, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement, "The Justice Department is heartbroken by the deaths of three of our own law enforcement colleagues, and we extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones as they grieve this unfathomable loss."

In a statement Monday night, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said: "The tragic events in Charlotte today are a reminder of the dangers facing law enforcement across the country. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of all the federal, state and local officers who lost their lives or were injured."

An investigation is ongoing.

New details emerge after 4 law enforcement officers killed in shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina

New details emerged a day after police said four law enforcement officers were killed and four others were wounded in a shooting in Charlotte , North Carolina , while trying to serve a warrant Monday afternoon. A suspect was killed in a shootout with police, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said.

A U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force comprised of officers from multiple agencies was attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a man for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in east Charlotte when the shooting started, Jennings said, He called the shooting "an absolute tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the profession of law enforcement."

When officers approached a house to arrest the suspect, they were immediately met with gunfire and they returned fire, Jennings said.

"There's indication that the suspect saw them coming to the house prior to them getting to the front door," Jennings said during a news conference Tuesday.

Police said the officers called for backup and they continued to exchange fire with the suspect. More gunfire came from inside the house as officers approached the suspect, setting off a long standoff, Jennings said.

The man then left the house while armed, police said, and officers opened fire and shot him in the front yard, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified by police as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., 39.

Jennings said the suspect used an AR-15-style rifle and a .40-caliber handgun and had additional ammunition for both guns. Police were looking into how he acquired the guns.

When the standoff was over, a female and a 17-year-old were found inside the house and were brought to a police station as persons of interest, Jennings said. A later statement said both individuals were female and that they had exited the home following negotiations with a SWAT team.

Investigators were trying to determine what happened inside the residence. Police initially believed there were two shooters involved in the incident, including the individual killed in the initial shootout, but Jennings said Tuesday he's not ready to say there was a second shooter. The two persons of interest are fully cooperating with the investigation and haven't been charged, he said.

The suspect was shooting at the officers from the upstairs of the house, Jennings said.

"Even though our officers were trying to take cover, they were at a disadvantage because the suspect was up at a higher level and they were trying to return fire from a lower position to an elevated position," the police chief said.

The suspect may have also fired at the officers after he was shot outside the house, Jennings said.

Eight officers in total were shot, Jennings said. 

The Marshals Service identified the deputy U.S. marshal who was killed in the shooting as Thomas Weeks Jr., 48. He is survived by a wife and four children, the agency said in a statement Tuesday.

Two other slain law enforcement officers, identified as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, were from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction assigned to the task force. Both were 14-year veterans of the department, North Carolina Secretary of Adult Correction Todd Ishee said in a statement.

Poloche is survived by a wife and two adult children. Elliott leaves behind a wife and one child, the statement said.

"These officers died as heroes and made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our state," Ishee said. "We remember them, we honor their service, we send our deepest condolences to their families and friends, and we pray for healing for all affected by this tragic incident."

Polche's wife, Cielo Poloche, told CBS News her husband was "passionate about his work and he was passionate about helping people and protecting people and being part of his team." The two had been married for 22 years, she said.

The fourth officer killed was Joshua Eyer, a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the department said Monday night.

Eyer, who had been with the department for six years, "fought for his life for several hours before succumbing to his injuries," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement. Ayer is survived by a wife and 3-year-old son, Jennings said Monday night.

Three other Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers who responded to the shooting were shot, Jennings said. They were identified as Christopher Tolley, Michael Giglio and Jack Blowers. Tolley underwent surgery and remains hospitalized in stable condition, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a news release. Giglio and Blowers were treated and released. 

The other wounded officer was identified Tuesday by the Statesville Police Department as Statesville police Cpl. Casey Hoover, who was also a member of the task force. Hoover suffered a gunshot wound to an area of his upper torso that was unprotected by his bulletproof vest, Statesville police said in a news release. He underwent surgery and is stable and expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Statesville is part of the Charlotte metro area. 

A fifth Charlotte-Mecklenburg officer, Justin Campbell, sustained a broken foot during the incident, police said. He was also treated and released from an area hospital. 

Jennings earlier said that all of the officers are expected to make a full recovery.  

"Unfortunately today was something tragic that we never want to see," Jennings said.    

Meanwhile, Lincoln County Sheriff Bill Beam clarified Tuesday evening that a Lincoln County detective was not wounded in the incident, as had been initially reported. 

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said on social media, "Our hearts are with the families and co-workers of officers in today's brutal attack, including two state Department of Adult Correction officers working with the US Marshal's Task Force who were shot and killed."

President Biden spoke with Cooper and "expressed his condolences and support for the community," the White House said in a statement.

In a later statement, Mr. Biden called the officers "heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm's way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded."

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement, "The Justice Department is heartbroken by the deaths of three of our own law enforcement colleagues, and we extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones as they grieve this unfathomable loss."

Tyler Wilson told CBS affiliate WBTV he was working at home when he heard officers calling for someone to come out of a neighboring house.

"After that, it was just chaos," Wilson told the station. "There was shots ringing left and right. We had SWAT and U.S. marshals set up snipers in our bedrooms. There was a officer got drug by his arms through our house. I don't know if he was shot or if he injured himself. It's been pretty crazy. It was about 30 minutes where it was a straight shootout."

Video posted to social media appeared to show over a dozen police cruisers and two officers running at the scene.

A standoff lasted for several hours before police cleared the scene.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An attempt to serve a warrant turned deadly Monday when a deputy U.S. marshal and three other members of a task force were shot and killed in Charlotte.

In all, eight law enforcement officials were shot, including two correction officers who were killed and a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who was critically wounded and later died. Three other Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers were also shot.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Chief Johnny Jennings said at a 9:40 p.m. briefing that Officer Joshua Eyer had succumbed to his injuries.

"Officer Joshua Eyer has passed away tonight from his injuries after being shot in the line of duty this afternoon while assisting other officers with the apprehension of a suspect," CMPD said in a statement on social media. "Officer Eyer faithfully served the CMPD's North Tryon Division for six years and was a member of the 178th Recruit Class. We are forever indebted to Officer Eyer for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice. His life and service will never be forgotten. Please say a prayer for Officer Eyer's loved ones during this difficult time."

Eyer was survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son, Jennings said.

He added that "we're still actively investigating this and that this incident would "still be a CMPD case."

The deadly saga began around 1:30 p.m. when the U.S. Marshals Task Force went to serve a warrant on a convicted felon believed to have illegal firearms in the 5000 block of Galway Drive in the North Tryon Division.

As officers approached the suspect, the man opened fire, striking multiple officers. As officers returned fire, more shots struck additional officers.

The man shooting at the officers left the home and was killed in the front yard of the home in the eastern Charlotte neighborhood.

The CMPD's Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) then began negotiations with other occupants in the house. A standoff began and lasted for several hours. That included armored vehicles crashing into the suburban home in a tree-lined neighborhood and tearing off doorways and windows.

Two women came out and were taken to the Law Enforcement Center to be interviewed by detectives.

The armed suspect who was killed by officers was identified late Monday night as Terry Clark Hughes Jr, 39.

Hughes was wanted for possession of a firearm by felon and two counts of felony flee to elude out of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

"Today we lost some heroes who were out simply trying to keep our community safe," Jennings said.

During a 6 p.m. news conference, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said three U.S. marshals had been killed, and a fourth injured.

Later, the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that one of its officers had been killed. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper clarified that the other two killed were officers with the State Department of Adult Correction who were working with the task force.

Todd Ishee, NC Secretary of Adult Correction, identified the two officers killed as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, both 14-year NC Department of Adult Correction veterans.

Poloche leaves behind a wife and two children, and Elliott and his wife were parents to one child, Ishee said.

"Every single day, Deputy U.S. Marshals and Task Force Officers put their lives on the line to apprehend some of our country's most dangerous criminals," Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement. "Today, three of those dedicated public servants made the ultimate sacrifice. Multiple other officers were critically injured while carrying out this operation to protect their community. The Justice Department is heartbroken by the deaths of three of our own law enforcement colleagues, and we extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones as they grieve this unfathomable loss."

Cooper posted on social media that he had offered state resources to assist local law enforcement in any way they may need.

Cooper later arrived in Charlotte, the state's largest city, to meet with officials and the families of the victims.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles took to social media to offer her thoughts on the shooting:

"I am deeply saddened by the shooting that occurred that involved Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers and US Marshals today. I ask that all Charlotteans keep them, the other injured officers, and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting and spoke to Cooper to express his condolences and support for the community, according to the White House.

In a statement, the White House said: "The president was briefed on the shooting in North Carolina, in which multiple law enforcement officers were killed. He spoke to Governor Cooper and expressed his condolences and support for the community. In addition, senior White House officials are in touch with federal, state, and local officials."

Biden later issued a more detailed statement:

"Earlier today, four brave law enforcement officers - including a Deputy U.S. Marshal - were killed in the line of duty. They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm's way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded. When a law enforcement officer puts on that shield in the morning and heads out the door, their family members dread the phone call - the very call that came today. It's like losing a piece of your soul. To the families of those we lost: Jill and I, and all Americans, are here for you. And we will always be here for you. We must do more to protect our law enforcement officers. That means funding them - so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. And it means taking additional action to combat the scourge of gun violence. Now. Leaders in Congress need to step up so that we ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of guns, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law. Enough is enough. May God Bless these fallen heroes."

The last marshal shot and killed in the line of duty was in November 2018. Chase White was shot in Tucson, Arizona, by a man wanted for stalking local law enforcement officers, the agency said.

The investigation is being conducted by CMPD's Homicide Unit. As is standard procedure with any officer-involved shooting, the CMPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is conducting a separate but parallel investigation.
