crj200 cruise speed

The Bombardier CRJ100 and CRJ200 are a family of regional airliner manufactured by Bombardier, and based on the Canadair Challenger business jet. The CRJ200 is identical to the 100 model except for more efficient engines. Pinnacle Airlines had operated some with 44 seats, designated as CRJ440, with closets in the forward areas of the passenger cabin though these were converted to 50 seat airplanes. These modifications were designed to allow operations under their major airline contract "scope clause" which restricts major airlines' connection carriers from operating equipment carrying 50 or more passengers to guard against usurpation of Air Line Pilots Association and Allied Pilots Association pilots' union contract. Similarly, Comair's fleet of 40-seat CRJ200s were sold at a discounted price to discourage Comair from purchasing the less expensive and smaller Embraer 135. As of August 2006 a total of 938 CRJ100 and CRJ200 aircraft (all variants) are in airline service, with 8 further firm orders. Major operators include Comair, Pinnacle Airlines, SkyWest Airlines, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Air Wisconsin, ALMA de Mexico, Air Canada Jazz, Mesa Airlines, Lufthansa CityLine, Air Nostrum (35, Plus 7 orders), PSA Airlines, Republic Airways Holdings and Mesaba Airlines. Some 20 other airlines also operate smaller fleets of the type.

Bombardier crj100 vs crj200 – what are the differences.

Originally known as the Canadair CRJ100 and CRJ200, the Canadian built regional jets were based on American aviation inventor Bill Lear's LearStar 600 concept. Built as a private jet, the Bombardier Challenger 600 typically had nine seats but could be configured with as many as 19. Let's take a look at the differences between the Bombardier CRJ100 vs CRJ200.

When Bombardier bought Canadair in 1986, the Montreal-headquartered company decided to see if they could manufacture a stretched version of the aircraft to be suitable as a regional airliner. The first CRJ100 made its maiden flight in May 1991 and entered commercial service with German national flag carrier Lufthansa 17 months later.

The CJR100 was faster than turboprops

Looking to compete with turboprop aircraft like the Fokker 50, the ATR-42, and the Bombardier Dash 8-300, Bombadier thought that passengers would prefer to fly in a faster plane. And while they knew it would be more expensive to operate than a turboprop, the cost differential would be balanced by its higher productivity rate.

The first CRJ100s were soon followed by the CRJ100 ER, which increased the plane's range by 20%. This was then advanced again with the CRJ100 LR, allowing the plane to fly 40% further than the original CRJ100. The 50-seat CRJ100 was fitted with General Electric CF34-3A1 engines capable of generating up to 41.0 kN (4,180 kg / 9,220 lbf) of thrust, with the LR version having a range of 1,650 nautical miles ( 3,056 kilometers).

The CRJ200 had slightly different engines

To provide its customers with the latest aerospace advances, Bombardier developed the CRJ100 to become the CRJ200. Everything about the two planes was identical except that the 200 version had more fuel-efficient engines and a slight increase in cruise altitude and speed. The new engines were manufactured by General Electic and designated as the CF34-3B1 rather than the original CF34-3A1.

When the CRJ100 was introduced, airlines in the United States shifted towards a hub and spoke network following the 1978 Airline Deregulation Act. Because of the CRJ100 and CRJ200s small size, they were more suitable for being deployed on secondary market routes than traditional narrowbody jets.

In Europe, Germany's Lufthansa CityLine operated according to aviation enthusiast website Planespotters.net 11 CRJ100s and 37 CRJ200s while French regional airline Brit Air had 23 Bombardier CRJ-100s in its fleet of 88 aircraft according to Planespotters.net.

The CRJ700 was the next evolution

The CRJ100 and the CRJ200 went on to become not only a commercial success for Bombardier but also spawned the developments of the 70-seat CRJ700, which is still being flown by many American regional airlines. In 2006 Bombardier decided to terminate the CRJ100/200 and concentrate on the larger CRJ700 and its turboprop aircraft.

Meanwhile, over the years, the cost of fuel and more advancements in aircraft technology has led to airlines retiring their CJR100/200 aircraft in favor of more modern fuel-efficient planes. There you have it, the CRJ100 and CRJ200 were virtually on the same plane except for the modifications made to the General Electric CF34-3A1 engine.

As far as we are aware, SkyWest Airlines still operates some CRJ200s for its partner airline. If you can think of anyone else still flying the CRJ100/200, please let us know in the comments.

How to hold airspeed during cruise.

Matthew Tunkelo-Bonner

I have worked out how to hold the airspeed during climb.

But as soon as it gets to cruise it always disconnects and I have to set the throttle manually, same on descent and landing. After climb the speed button does not want to engage.

How do you work around this?

The aircraft didn't have a Autothrust. You have to adjust thrust manually during cuise.

So you have a look on the speed all the time and if needed you have to adjust thrust manually.

Thx1137

To explain more. Speed mode uses pitch to control the speed, it can't do that when flying level.

JRBarrett

JRBarrett 675

In the real CRJ the pilot has to manually control thrust in cruise to hold the desired airspeed. In my experience, at altitudes above FL300, an N1 setting of around 81.5 percent will give about Mach 0.77

If you are not using Live Weather the temperature, wind and pressure at cruise altitude will never change, and once you find an engine N1 setting that gives you a desired cruise speed, you can often cruise for many minutes without ever touching the throttles. With Live Weather active, you will have to adjust thrust more often.

In automotive terms, the CRJ has no “cruise control”. Unlike more advanced aircraft with autothrottles, in the CRJ, you cannot walk away when in cruise and do something else, depending on the automatic systems to manage your speed. You need to stay in the cockpit throughout the entire flight to manage your speed manually.

On the airspeed display , right next to the pointer showing your current airspeed, there will be a magenta-colored trend vector, which is a vertical line that points above or below the current airspeed that shows if your current airspeed is increasing or decreasing. Your goal should be to adjust engine thrust to shrink the trend vector so it disappears. If the trend vector shows your airspeed is increasing, reduce thrust a little, or if decreasing, increase it a little.

I have no knowledge of engineering or aircraft design, but I am puzzled that an aircraft of this generation does not have this automation.

There is a reason perhaps behind this design choice from Bombardier.

In fact the whole automation seems a little quirky to me.

It is actually typical for the CRJ design period (early 1990s). The competing Embraer EMB145 and 135 regional jets from the same period have no autothrottles either. Both the CRJ and Embraer are designed for relatively short legs of one or two hours. Other aircraft from that era, such as the 737/747/757/767 are designed for long distance flights, where autothrottles and full coupled VNAV would be more useful to relive pilot workload.

Both the CRJ 700/900 and the EMB 135/145 have FADEC controlled engines with fixed thrust detents for takeoff and climb and a variable range for cruise and descent. An autothrottle is not compatible with that kind of system.

Autothrottles actually  are  available as an aftermarket add-on for the older CRJ-200. That is possible because the  CRJ-200 does not have FADEC, or fixed throttle detents - the power levers are simple continuously variable controls that go from idle to max thrust.
