By the way, you can take Danube River Cruises with music and entertainment to celebrate your special occasions with your loved ones.

The Danube River offers a picturesque cruise route that showcases some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Here’s a typical route that a Danube river cruise might take –

Route of Danube River Cruise in Budapest

Are you confused about whether to take a Sightseeing Cruise or a Dinner Cruise ?

A sightseeing cruise might be better if your main goal is to see and learn about Budapest’s landmarks.

If you’re looking for a more comprehensive experience that includes dining and entertainment against the backdrop of the city at night, a dinner cruise would be more suitable.

Daytime cruises on the Danube River typically start at 10.30 am, with the final departure at 3.30 pm.

Evening cruises commence around 4.30 pm, concluding with the last cruise at 9 pm.

Danube brunch cruises begin at 11.30 am for those interested in a midday meal.

Meanwhile, dinner cruises along the Danube usually set sail between 7 and 7.30 pm.

The best time for a Danube River cruise in Budapest is during the fall, specifically in September and October.

This period offers pleasant weather, fewer tourists, and stable river levels, enhancing the overall experience.

From April to December, Budapest’s breathtaking views from the Danube attract thousands of tourists.

From January through early March, the temperatures along the Danube drop significantly, making it a less favorable time for cruising.

Despite the colder weather, Christmas remains a popular time for a Danube cruise.

The enchanting Christmas markets along the riverbanks create a festive and magical atmosphere, drawing many to the experience.

Most Danube River cruises last either 60 or 90 minutes.

However, if your cruise includes additional activities such as dinner, music, or folk performances, the duration can extend to about 3 hours.

Here are a few frequently asked questions about the Danube River Cruise in Budapest:

The Danube River is one of Europe’s major rivers, passing through several European nations, including Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania, eventually emptying into the Black Sea

The sightseeing cruises on the Danube River don’t sell timed tickets. Once you have a ticket for the day, you can hop onto a boat at any time during the day. However, the dinner cruise boats have a set sailing time, which you must choose when booking your tickets.

It is best to reach the departure point at least 15-20 minutes before departure.

Many family-friendly Danube River cruises in Budapest often include kid-friendly activities. It’s wise to check with the cruise operator beforehand, as some voyages may have age limits.

The Danube river cruises in Budapest sail between the Buda and the Pest regions, and get back to the Dock from where you started.

Unfortunately, most of the Danube River cruises cannot accommodate people with mobility issues. However, a few cruises are wheelchair accessible, and you should check the tour’s booking page for more information.

From late November to December, the Christmas fever grips, and Danube cruises continue despite the cold. However, in the slow months of January, February, and early March, most cruise operators take away their boats for repair and maintenance, leaving visitors with fewer options.

River cruise boats don’t rock and sway like the boats in the ocean. If you’re still concerned, you can pack Dramamine or OTC seasickness medications as a precaution.

Summary – Highlights

This cruise offers typical Hungarian dinner of 3 courses served buffet style during a two-hour excursion on the Danube between Margaret Bridge and Rákóczi Bridge.

It’s really ideal for those who want to try several local dishes at once – highly recommend the goulash soup, beef ragout with dumplings, – the stuffed cabbage is not bad either though a bit dry due to use of ground turkey – and the selection of strudels for dessert .

Live folk dance shows performed by two very talented dancers and the energetic music of a Gypsy folk band will entertain you throughout the evening.

About The Count Széchenyi Ship

The large, historic Gróf Széchenyi ship accomodates up to 300 guests but due to the spaciousness of the ship it won’t feel crowded even in high season when many tourists choose this program for their evening in Budapest.

Classical Grandeur On Two Levels

As you step aboard you’ll be transported to a world of classical elegance and luxurious ambiance.

The interior of the ship exudes a timeless charm, adorned with magnificent chandeliers, polished teak wood accents, and intricately designed intarsia walls.

The top deck boasts two symmetrical dinner sections , offering a spacious and refined setting for guests to enjoy their meals.

Additionally, there are four outdoor decks on the ship, where you can sit and enjoy the vista as well as take amazing photos:

  • Two located on the sides and
  • Two at each end.

These open-air spaces are perfect for sightseeing , allowing you to soak in the breathtaking views that unfold along the river.

As I stood on the sides, I was captivated by the sweeping 180° vistas, while at the front and back, the views were a complete 360°.

However, I must note that ther protective railings partially obstructed the view from these angles.

The lower deck is smaller with one open area immediately to the right of the entrance where guests that booked the cruise without dinner are seated.

It features a well-stocked bar with reasonably priced beverages, comfortable tables and you’ll find the toilets on this level too.

After boarding the ship you’ll receive your welcome drink (sparkling wine or fruit juice) then you’ll find a table to sit down and relish your drink.

A bottle of mineral water and a choice another drinks (beer, wine, soft drink) are also included in the package.

You can buy additional beverages – wine, beer, coffee, soft drinks – just choose from the menu placed on every table.

After the cruise departs from the pier located right next to the Chain Bidge in Pest, dinner starts and it’s time for you to savour the flavours of Hungary.

The dessert table is packed with a selection of strudels (with apple, cottage cheese or sour cherry filling), Somló style sponge cake dessert in shot glass, and various fruits.

Meanwhile take time to witness the illuminated beauty of Budapest’s most renowned landmarks , including the impressive Parliament – the ship sails at quite a slow space so you’ll have plenty of time to shoot photos, the magnificent Chain Bridge , and the Buda Castle complex or the more modern additions like the

By budapest sightseeing kft., departure: 19:30 / duration: 90 min. – from €80.

The Danube river cruise by Eurama – an experienced and reliable sightseeing tour operator in Budapest – is very similar to the one organized by Hungaria Koncert Ltd ( see at the top ) only this one departs half hour later, at 19.30 and offers serviced dinner instead of buffet-style meal.

Live entertainment, folklore performance, and music complements the tasty 3-course meal with vegetarian and gluten-free options. We were also greeted with a glass of sparkling wine upon boarding.

You can pick from three menus:

Traditional Hungarian Menu 1.:

  • Goulash Soup
  • Grilled Pork Tenderloin wrapped in Bacon with Steak Potatoes and Letcho,

Our Opinion – How Did We Find This Cruise?

The boat trip on the Danube at night is definitely worth it. The city becomes incredibly beautiful with the lights on. We took this boat trip in mid-May so we’ve also managed to catch the sunset which one of thebest times to admire the city.

However, we’ve had mixed feelings about this cruise. Upon arrival, the host handed us a glass of sparkling wine which was a pleasant way to start our evening.

Dinner has started while the ship still stood in the dock, which gave the service a somewhat hurried feel. We had a quick meal – Goulash, pork chop and strudel – served at our table accompanied by a nice folk show presented by two talented dancers and marvellous gypsy music.

Perhaps the dance could have been a bit longer.

Meal quality was OK, with the goulash soup being the best. Pork chop a bit overdone. Strudel is acceptable.

We’ve found the staff attentive and professional. Table service was very good too. Meals were brought in time with not too much lapse in between courses.

The ship is not the most modern but it was spacious enough. Toilets are outside which is OK in good weather but not so much in winter.

All in all we’ve had a great time even as locals being familiar with the dishes and the traditional music and dancing.

#5.- Romantic Candlelit 4-Course Danube Dinner Cruise

By legenda city cruise, departure: 20:30 / duration: 150 min. – from €95.

We really loved the Romantic Candlelit Dinner River Cruise by Legenda despite its length – more than 2 hours – and higher price range.

In our opinion it’s very similar to the 4-course or 7-course dinner cruise provided by Silverline (listed #2 and #3 ) both in terms of ambience and food quality.

This evening cruise departs at just a right time in summer to capture the captivating view painted by the setting sun.

It features a

  • Welcome drink
  • Catered 4-course dinner that you choose from the menu,
  • Kids menu (3-course) at discount price, 65 EUR (ages 3-12)
  • Live music, and
  • 2.5-hour excursion that passes by all the renowned attractions.
The cruise is known for its romantic atmosphere and attentive staff. With positive customer reviews and based on our enjoyable experience we highly recommended this boat tour for those visiting Budapest .

✅ It’s one of the highest rated dinner cruises in Budapest: 4.7/5 (by 700+ reviewers) 4.5/5 (by 450+ reviewers on Tripadvisor) – fellow travellers’ positive opinion is the best praise.

✅ The floor-to-ceiling panorama windows that are pulled back in good weather allow a fantastic, unobstructed view during the whole trip.

✅ Nice selection of a-la-carte meals. If you come with children they can have a 3-course kid-friendly menu at reduced price (65 EUR)

✅ Great value for money considering food and service quality and duration of the program.

#5+1.- Late Night Cruise with Hungarian Dinner & Folk Music

Departure: 22:00 / duration: 90 min. – from €69.

This night boat tour by Hungaria Koncert is basically the same as the #1 – Evening Cruise with Folk Show and Hungarian/International Dinner with some minor differences: it lasts 1.5 hours instead of 2 and there is no folk dancing but there is live folk or salon music.

The same historic Count Széchenyi ship will take you on a late night sightseeing river tour.

The buffet-style dinner is also the same regarding both options and quality. We recommend the Hungarian dishes: goulash, beef stew and stuffed cabbage becuse they are really tasty and you can have as many portions as you like from the buffet spread.

Included are also a welcome drink (sparkling wine or orange juice) and a small bottle of minearl water.

night view of the illuminated Chain Bridge and buildings on the Pest Danube bank

TIP: Please note that the city’s decorative night lighting is turned off at 23.00 every day so be prepared if you want to catch the night cityscape on photo/video.

✅ It’s one of the few late night cruises in Budapest so if you want to see the Danube and the bridges as well as Budapest’s other notable sights illuminated at night then definitely include this one in your itinerary.

✅ If you stick to the Hungarian meal choices you will have a nice, flavorul dinner while cruising past the World Heritage listed cityscape.

✅ Comfortable, roomy ship that exudes classic, timeless charm. Perfect setting for a special celebration or just a romantic night out. The candlelit dinner make the entire program even more enchanting.

❌ City lights are turned off at 23.00 so if you want to see more of nighttime Budapest then pick an earlier boat our.

❌ Travellers have mixed opinions on the food – just don’t expect 1st class restaurant quality and you’ll have a great time.

FAQ Related To Dinner Cruises in Budapest

How long do budapest dinner cruises typically last.

Danube river tours with dinner usually last around 1.5 to 2.5 hours , giving you ample time to enjoy your meal, take in the sights, and relax on board.

The minimum duration of cruises without dinner is 1 hour but the whole experience may feel rushed and tours of this length usually don’t cover the full circuit between Margaret and Rákóczi bridges.

In our opinion a 70-80-minute boat trip with meal is an ideal length where you can fully enjoy both the food and the sights.

Are Budapest dinner cruises suitable for families with children?

Yes, most of the dinner cruises – mainly those that start early in the evening, see the Evening Cruise with Hungarian Dinner starting at 7 pm – are a good fit for families with children. Some cruises offer special menus and entertainment options for kids, ensuring an enjoyable time for the whole family.

Can I request special dietary accommodations on Budapest dinner cruises?

Absolutely! Most dinner cruises in Budapest are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions or special requests .

It’s advisable to inform the cruise provider in advance to ensure they can cater to your needs.

Can I enjoy vegetarian or vegan options on Budapest dinner cruises?

Most cruises with meal offer vegetarian menu options. For strictly vegan meals or special dietary requests it’s best to send the organiser a request.

They understand the importance of catering to different dietary preferences and strive to provide a diverse range of dishes to accommodate all guests.

Are alcoholic drinks included in the dinner cruise package?

It depends which cruise you choose. The majority include a welcome drink or a glass of wine with the meal, and you can buy drinks from the beverage menu at additional cost at almost every cruise ship. You can’t bring your own beverages on board the ship though.

Cesky Krumlov’s lively street performers (the clarinets were my fave!) and photo-worthy spots made it an unforgettable day — how cool it was to hear my favorite KISS song played over lunch.

Do you need another Viking River Cruise idea? My first, and I think most people chose it, was the romantic  Rhine River cruise .

Marveling at Melk Abbey in Austria

Our next stop was the 900-year-old Melk Abbey , perched on stunning cliffs in the Wachau Valley. This Benedictine monastery is a treasure trove of history and beauty.

Exploring Melk Abbey

  • Library and Ceiling Frescoes: The library feels like something out of Beauty and the Beast, and the hand-painted ceiling frescoes are spectacular.
  • Guided Tour: Learn about the abbey’s history and significance.
  • Scenic Cruising: After our visit, we enjoyed a leisurely afternoon of scenic cruising during lunch.

Despite the rain, Melk Abbey left a lasting impression with its rich history and stunning views. However, photography is not allowed inside.

Vienna, Austria – The City of Waltzes

Vienna, known as the City of Waltzes, is one of Europe’s most elegant capitals. Our bus tour took us along the Ringstrasse, where we saw some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Exploring Vienna

  • The Hofburg: The Habsburg’s Winter Palace and home of the Spanish Riding School’s Lipizzaner Stallions .
  • St. Stephan’s Cathedral: A stunning example of Gothic architecture.
  • Vienna State Opera House : Marvel at the magnificent frescoes depicting Mozart’s Magic Flute .

My friends and I also took an optional tour of Schönbrunn Palace , known as the “Versailles of Vienna.” This opulent palace was home to Marie Antoinette and the Habsburg family, who reigned for six centuries.

A Unique Lunch Experience

Rather than returning to the ship for lunch, we hailed a taxi and went for classic fondue at Restaurant Chamäleon . Despite the initial uncertainty of our cab driver’s directions, we had a delicious meal of authentic cheese fondue with plenty (what seemed like 10 pounds) of bread.

Bratislava, Slovakia – A Hidden Gem

Slovakia’s capital city, Bratislava , is a delight to explore. Our starting points were the Medieval Town Hall and fortifications at Michael’s Tower.

Must-See Sights in Bratislava

  • St. Martin’s Cathedral: A charming Gothic cathedral with a rich history.

Budapest’s vibrant energy and historic beauty made it a fitting end to our unforgettable cruise. My favorite things about Budapest were the  Szechenyi Baths  (15 indoor and three outdoor pools, saunas, and a steam room—also one of the best in Europe) and the amazing, inexpensive food.

Pro Tip:  Touring the  Zwack Unicum Museum  was interesting. The local drink was too strong for my taste, but I appreciated visiting to see how it is made, their great marketing campaigns, and their enormous liquor bottle collection.

Just been on the river cruise with drinks – if you are al all interested in hearing the commentary (which is really the whole point), do not take this cruise. There is (loud) background music playing throughout the whole tour, even when the commentary is playing.  The music is much louder that the information, therefore you cannot hear anything that is being said. We did ask for the music to be turned off or at least turned down to enable us to hear and we were told that this would be done, but it never happened during the whole trip.  Would definitely not recommend if you are interested in what you are seeing.

Dear Sir/Madam,

thank you for your valuable feedback.

We are terribly sorry that this program could not live up to your expectations. We are striving to improve services and appreciate any feedback from our guests, and certainly appreciate your time and effort for sharing your observations about this cruise program.

However, please note that this program is rather a lunch cruise than a sightseeing cruise. There are many sightseeing cruises with audio guides available on a daily basis, which are suggested for guests who wish to learn about the riverside attractions and the history of Budapest.

We do hope that you enjoyed the buffet lunch and the 2 drinks on this 90min long program.

We are a group of 14 from Finland. We could possibly come to day cruise which leaves at 2 pm 22nd march. We are a group of people where there are three birthday people. Yours sincerely Erkki Kärkkäinen

Hi Please can you tell me where the boarding point is for the river lunch cruise? Thanks Rachel

Hello Rachel, the Budapest lunch cruise normally leaves from the Dock near the Chain Bridge (Pest side of the city of Budapest). The meeting point however is 30 minutes before the cruise starts at 1.30 pm in the Danube Palace office (Zrinyi Street 5, District 5) If you wish to have guaranteed seats, we suggest making an online reservation to secure your seats. Especially in the high seasons (May – September, December, Easter season)

One Of The World's Best River Cruises Is A Romantic European Escape Perfect For First-Timers

W hen you imagine taking a cruise, you might think of exploring private Caribbean islands on a huge cruise ship . While those certainly have their place, it can be a bit intimidating to contemplate sailing the high seas with thousands of people, especially for first-time cruisers. If you're looking for something more intimate that still offers lots to do and see, consider booking a European cruise and put the Danube River at the top of your list. You can expect to see historic castles, picturesque countryside vistas, and grand cities as you go.

Spanning some 1,770 miles, the Danube is the second-longest river in Europe, running from western Germany all the way to the Black Sea. It passes through 10 countries and the capital cities of Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade. A cruise on the Danube can take between two and three weeks if you do the whole thing. However, if it's your inaugural cruise, you might be more comfortable with a shorter itinerary that tackles just one section of the historic river. If you fall in love with the lifestyle, you can always come back for more!

The most popular route is along the Upper Danube, between Hungary and Germany, which takes around a week. Typically, the cruise will start (or end) in Budapest, toward the middle of the river, and end (or start) in Regensburg or Nuremberg. All three cities feature impressive medieval architecture.

Danube River Cruises Spotlight History, Culture, And Food

Highlights of a Danube River cruise range from the historic and the musical to the delicious. The small Austrian village of Dürnstein, with its iconic pale blue clock tower, is where King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in the 1190s. The Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a number of idyllic vineyards known for producing world-class dry white wines. The region's Melk Abbey is visited by over half a million people each year, and its distinct yellow color, twin towers, and 200-foot-tall dome have made it a landmark along the Danube River for hundreds of years.

Then there's Vienna, the "City of Music." Classical composers like Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven lived and worked there, and it's home to the legendary Vienna State Opera and Vienna Boys Choir. The city's also got some beautiful palaces and cathedrals. Vienna is the place to try traditional wiener schnitzel, a pan-fried, breaded cutlet.

In Passau, near the border of Austria and Germany, the ornately decorated baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral has a massive organ with nearly 18,000 pipes. While in Passau, sample the famous pralines, chocolate, and gingerbread from Simon Confiserie. From Linz, Austria (depending on the cruise line), you can arrange a side trip to Salzburg, where "The Sound of Music" was filmed and where you can enjoy sensational desserts like Salzburger Nockerl at Café Mozart, a longtime center of Viennese coffeehouse culture.

Choose Your Danube River Cruise Based On The Time Of Year And The Ship's Amenities

Several cruise lines offer tours of the Danube, each with unique onboard experiences, shore excursions, durations, and price points. Cruising with the Riverside Mozart means enjoying a luxury ship where every room is a suite, and a butler is available to help attend to your every need. There's also a spa and sauna on board. Viking River Cruises provides a number of itineraries, including the "Romantic Danube" cruise, which lasts eight days. Along the way, you can learn to waltz in Vienna, tour the countryside via e-bike, and discover how to make apricot dumplings.

While you could visit many of these places via train or car, when you do it on a river cruise, you aren't packing and unpacking your suitcase for each stop, and you don't have to figure out directions. You basically get to just sit back and enjoy. And unlike crowded Caribbean cruises, river cruise ships are spacious yet intimate, serving fewer than 200 passengers. While there are options to cruise the Danube River pretty much year-round, the best times, when it comes to weather and crowds, are spring and fall -- though November and December can be great if you want to visit some European Christmas markets .
