Declan McKenna Adds Perth Headline Show to 2024 Australian Tour

By Music Feeds

London singer-songwriter Declan McKenna will be in town in the early days of 2024 for performances at the Heaps Good festival in Brisbane and Adelaide. He’ll also play headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as one at Perth’s Astor Theatre – which has just been announced. The Perth show is happening on Monday, 8th January, and tickets go on sale via Secret Sounds at 9am AWST on Friday, 3rd November.

The tour will precede the release of McKenna’s third album, What Happened To The Beach? , which is due to arrive on Friday, 9th February. Two singles from the record are currently available: ‘Nothing Works’ and ‘Sympathy’.

Declan McKenna: ‘Nothing Works’

“In the past few years, there has been a bit of weight behind making music,” McKenna said in regards to the headspace that informed What Happened To The Beach? “I wanted to open up and not worry about things so much. I was putting a lot of pressure on myself in the past when I just needed to drop the intensity a bit and have some fun.”

McKenna found fame with the 2015 single ‘Brazil’. More recently, he went viral for a cover of ABBA’s ‘ Slipping Through My Fingers ‘.

Declan McKenna’s musical journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. From smash hits like “Brazil,” “British Bombs,” and “The Key to Life on Earth” to his upcoming third album, “What Happened to the Beach?” The album boasts recently released lead singles, “Sympathy” and “Nothing Works,” and it heralds McKenna’s most thrilling adventure yet. In support of his upcoming record, this sharp British singer-songwriter announced earlier this month that he’ll embark on a 14-date run of shows across the UK in 2024, following his debut performances down under. This includes a stop at London’s Alexandra Palace, which marks Declan’s biggest headline show to date.

Even in his early twenties, Declan is entering a new, more personal phase as a songwriter. “What Happened To The Beach?” is an album that’s wonderfully weird and full of tone and colour, embodying the joyful defiance of expectations. Unlike his previous tunes, which often raced at a hundred miles per hour, Declan has allowed his audience to bask in the ambience of his new creations.

The album was produced in California last year by Gianluca Buccellati, known for his work with artists like Arlo Parks and Lana Del Rey. It’s an album that revels in space and atmosphere, echoing the sunshine that Declan soaked in during its creation before returning to the UK with a beautifully baked sound.

Naturally, an album crafted in response to the intensity of the past few years, both on a personal and global scale, has its moments of darkness. However, this time around, McKenna has set aside the demons he once targeted in his teenage years, like corrupt FIFA officials or the oppressive grip of the right-wing media. “If every song features a lyrical statement, then it loses some of its impact, too. I haven’t let go of that aspect of myself, but I don’t want to live out that style forever,” he remarks.

“Sympathy” marks the first offering from McKenna’s forthcoming album, a buoyant and bold leftfield pop song that exemplifies his effortless and uncomplicated style of writing. This was soon followed by the euphoric second single, “Nothing Works,” which emerged from the frustration of feeling constrained and tied to expectations. At its core, it’s a celebration of being true to oneself.

Declan McKenna has already made waves with an early evening slot on the main stage at Reading and Leeds Festival, following Billie Eilish, and extensive touring across the US this year. Now, he’s gearing up for his next adventure, this time down under in Australia. His Sydney and Melbourne dates coincide with his festival appearances at Heaps Good during the festive season.

Tickets can be purchased through  Live Nation , with the presale available from 9 am local time on Thursday, 19 October. The general public can grab their tickets at 9 am local time on Friday, 20 October.

This was my first time seeing Declan McKenna and he put on an spectacular show! To start, the concert was right on time so he went on exactly when we were told he would go on. His setlist wasn't incredibly long, so his performance ended at around 9:55-10:00. His vocals and band sound much clearer and better live than in the studio, and he connected with our audience very quickly. The crowd wasn't too wild; my side was pretty calm so Dec didn't come to interact with us as much as he did the middle and the other side. He interacted with the audience as a whole multiple times and was very humbled by everyone being so excited to be there. The amount of energy he exerted into his performance and every song was unlike anything I'd seen. You could tell how much his music and the show meant to him just from watching him perform.

After the show, he came out from backstage to meet fans by the merchandise table, and Declan was so incredibly kind and sweet to every single fan he met! My friend and I talked with him briefly about Arcade Fire and we got photos with him and he took his time to talk with every single one of us, so that was a very cool detail. I also got to meet Matt Shultz from Cage the Elephant after the show (!!!!!) since his brother's band was the opener. Overall, his performance was phenomenal and I would 100% recommend seeing Declan if you haven't already because he absolutely blew me and everyone else away.

I went to Declan's concert at the KOKO.

It was great. Music was great, support was great, everything was great... apart from one thing.

Declan or anyone else couldn't have really changed this but I felt like the crowd wasn't as welcoming as the crowds from oter concerts I have been to. The vibe from some people (not everyone some were actually really nice)was a bit unfriendly. Sometimes I felt really unwelcome. The crowd, especially on the floor, was not great. It's hard to explain. But I think it was just this concert. I have seen other videos of Declan on this tour and people seemed really nice so I guess it was just at this one. I also talked to my frends who went with me and they didn't agree with me on this, so it also might just be me.

But Declan was amazing. Loved it. Support band, Feet was great too. I've started listening to their music too.

Overall, great concert. would go again.

It was amazing I loved it! Before the show, I got to meet the opening band Dan Luke and The Raid while waiting outside in line and they were so nice! At the venue, it was very easy to find a good spot to watch from. Declan came out on stage in a mask before the show started and the crowd went wild. The show itself was great! My mom recorded most of the show for me so I could enjoy the show in the moment and look back later. After the show, I bought merch from both Declan and the opening act. It was very affordable merch so I was happy. I got a picture with Dan Luke and The Raid and I got to meet/take a picture with Declan Mckenna which was amazing! Declan was so nice and sweet! I would love to go to another show of his when he comes back to the states, which I'm sure he will because he's going to blow up one day.

If you are considering going to see Declan live, you should. You won't regret it.

I became a fan of Declan after discovering Paracetamol and instantly fell in love with his passionate singing and songwriting. However, live you can see the emotion in his eyes.

He is a born entertainer and loves interacting with the crowd whether that's touching hands with fans or crowd-surfing. He even climbed on the speaker in front of me. He was literally above me and I even managed to capture the moment on my phone.

You can clearly tell how much Declan adores music from the love he gives to us fans each show.

I will definitely go see Declan again and you should too. No matter whether it is your first time or twenty seventh time, the show will be one to remember.

The show was phenomenal~ the venue was intimate, and the opening act brought their own unique energy that made for a happy crowd, all the while hyping them up for the main act. Each and every audience member felt personally addressed by McKenna's performance, especially given that he left the stage more than once, at one point even running up to the the balcony and preceding to jump down among the crowd, but not before giving everyone up there a high five. Lastly, for a moving encore, both acts came on stage together to perform 'Listen To Your Friends'. The vibe in the room was good and the energy high. To top it all off, both bands stuck around after the show to sign merch and take pictures, embracing the fans and making everyone's week.

Declan is a singer worth seeing! At the Sinclair, he came on a bit late but Dan Luke and The Raid played and kept us entertained! When he came on, he was so hyped and ready that he got the crowd really excited and myself included! He had such great interactions with the fans, he threw things out (mostly flowers), and he even crowd surfed a couple of times! He eventually climbed a balcony and landed on others and I! I really loved the energy and the passion he brought on Tuesday night to Cambridge, he made this concert experience the best I've ever been to. I look forward to seeing him back in the states. I highly recommend going to see him!

High energy performance, which delivered and expanded expectations. Although he was ill, Declan managed to powerfully portray is musical repertoire in an engaging, and what look effortless performance. As this was a Halloween show, him and his band were dressed up in Ghostbusters attire and even added an extra musical number, the theme song, to their setlist. The banter and chemistry between Declan and the band was clear with the hilarious back-and-forth comments between them. The crowd clearly enjoyed themselves and fed off the excellent energy from the performers. Overall, a brilliant performance with many stand out moments.

Seeing Declan live was an EXPERIENCE. He’s so talented and his songs are so fun to dance and sing along to. I also loved how small the venue was because it was an intimate show, my favorite types of shows. Declan is also the sweetest + he met people after the show. His opening act, Chappell Roan was the cutest and she lit up with happiness every time we would cheer her on. Both her and Declan are so talented and deserve more recognition. If you have the chance to see Declan, do it!! It’s such a nice environment and small shows like this don’t happen often, especially with growing artists.

Really enjoyable. We sat in the circle. He did a great selection of songs mixing in the hits (or more popular songs). Second time i have seen him but the first was in a festival so Monday night was definitely an improvement. I didnt understand why people were making mosh pits when looking down at the crowds as he's quite chilled. Really enjoyed it overall was so glad I could go and I will definitely be seeing him again!! Come back to Manchester soon xx

Declan was absolutely amazing! The atmosphere was super fun and hyped and everyone was so pumped!! He is RADICAL live and super energetic! It was definitely the best and most fun concert I have ever been to and meaningful because we all got to share in a special moment with Declan and his band when they played one of their new, unreleased songs for us!! ❤ Absolutely marvelous experience, you should totally go see him if you can, he is SO fun!!!!

“breathless, exuberant pop-rock maximalism” – The Guardian

“McKenna’s live show is loud, uncompromising and studded with arms-around-shoulders singalongs” – NME

Secret Sounds and Live Nation are pumped to announce debut Australian headline shows by trailblazing, platinum-selling, British singer-songwriter Declan McKenna, taking over Sydney’s Enmore Theatre and Melbourne’s Forum in January 2024! These shows will see the songsmith tease audiences with a preview of his highly anticipated forthcoming album, What Happened to the Beach? which is set to drop on Friday 9 February.

Declan McKenna's music journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, from smash hits “Brazil”, “British Bombs”, and “The Key to Life on Earth” to his forthcoming third album, What Happened to the Beach?. The album features recently released lead singles “Sympathy” and “Nothing Works”, with Declan embarking on his most exciting undertaking yet. In support of his upcoming record, the sharp British singer-songwriter announced earlier this month that he’ll be heading off on a 14-date run of shows across the UK in 2024 after his debut shows down under, stopping at London’s Alexandra Palace, Declan’s biggest headline show to date.

Still in his early 20s, Declan is approaching a new, more personal era as a songwriter. What Happened To The Beach? is weird and wonky and full of tone and colour, the sound of a songwriter enjoying himself and gleefully defying expectations. Where previously his biggest tunes tended to hurtle along at 100 miles per hour, Declan taught and trusted himself to take his time and let the listener soak in the ambience. The record was produced in California last year with Gianluca Buccellati, whose previous projects include Arlo Parks and Lana Del Rey. This is an album that revels in both space and atmosphere, evoking the sunshine Declan basked in, and it returned to the UK sounding beautifully baked.

Naturally, an album written in response to the intensity of the last few years, both personal and globally, has moments of darkness running through it. However, the demons McKenna once focused his writing on as a teen, such as corrupt FIFA officials or the oppressive grip of the right-wing media, are left aside this time around. “If every song features a lyrical statement, then it loses some of its impact, too. I haven’t let go of that aspect of myself, but I don’t want to live out that style forever” he notes.

“Sympathy” is the first offering from McKenna’s forthcoming album. The buoyant and bold leftfield pop song represents the effortless and uncomplicated style of writing that he has been focusing on. This was followed up by the euphoric second single, “Nothing Works” came out of the frustration of feeling boxed in and tied to expectation. At its core, it’s a celebration of being true to yourself.

Following an early evening slot on the main stage at Reading and Leeds Festival behind Billie Eilish, and extensive touring of the US already this year, Declan McKenna is ready for the next bow, this time in Australia!
