Im a little less than 40 and Ive been listening to Al all my life. His solo projects as well as projects with various bands and artist created well before my time. He will always be one of the greats, one of my top 3 on strings. Saw him live once in '07 in Michigan. What a memorable experience. Can't wait to do it again!!

Pure professional as usual. I liked the concert in Helsinki. New versions of the Beatles songs were interesting ones. Savoy-theatre was perfect place for this kind of acoustic music. I liked.
First of all, The Maestro is awesome! I've waited years to see him perform live, and when I had heard he would be in San Jose at the Rock Bar (even though I never heard of the venue) I was ecstatic. BIG disappointment. My partner and I had to stand for 2 1/2 hours - first hour just to get in and then 45 minutes before he came onstage and then more standing whilst he performed. People were filling up the standing-room-only floor waiting til the big moment.Being that I get a little nervous in tight crowds, we moved toward a wall. Make a long story short - it was a standing show only if you wanted to see the Maestro pluck his guitar. If you got close enough to the stage and were at least 6 feet tall, then you might get to see Al do his magic. Then there was the case of very, very loud amps. My ears couldn't take it, my feet couldn't take it, and after 45 minutes of seeing only glimpses of his head, we left. I came to see him play live, not listen to his music. I can do that at home. I was better off watching him on YouTube. Bottom line: The Rock Bar says it all in the name - it's not a venue where you can sit, enjoy a drink and watch your favorite artists. I will never ever go to that venue again!

Live Music Review: Al Di Meola at The Plaza Live
AL DI MEOLA: THE ELECTRIC YEARS SPRING 2024 TOUR - The Plaza Live
Al Di Meola a bona fide guitar hero, perennial poll-winner, and prolific composer, he has amassed over 20 albums as a leader while collaborating on a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard fanatics who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola's writing along with the soulfulness and the inherent lyricism of his guitaristic expression have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the guitar aficionado set.
THE ELECTRIC YEARS SPRING 2024 TOUR landed at The Plaza Live in Orlando, FL featuring Al’s electric song selections from such classic albums as Land of the Midnight Sun, Elegant Gypsy, Casino and Splendido Hotel. These are some of my favorite albums and coveted by hard core Al Di fans! The band featured such great musicians as Philippe Saisse-keyboard, Luis Antonio Alicea-drums, Elias Tona-bass and the ol man Gumbi Ortiz-percussion. Al was at the top of his game after all of these years and even broke out the iconic black Gibson Les Paul which he told me he hadn’t used in decades live. He played such classic as “Casino” (which he had never played live), “Flight Over Rio,” “The Wizard,” “Dark Eye Tango,” “Elegant Gypsy Suite,” “Egyptian Danza” and one of my all-time favorites “Race With the Devil on Spanish Highway.” He even went back as far as 1974 visiting the Return to Forever album Where Have I Known You Before playing “Beyond the Seventh Galaxy.” All of which are favorite tracks played on my weekly show Guitar Trax. Al explained to me that he took lessons with Larry Coryell when he was young and how Larry really inspired him with all of his experimental merging of rock music with jazz. He was a real British Invasion fan as well delving into the sounds of the 60’s from London and San Francisco.
The show was an astounding display of virtuoso playing, but yet staying true to melodic hooks that reach down into your soul. There was a real rapport between Al and the musicians, which was evident on stage and in their improvisations. The Electric Years Tour was truly an inspiring show and a must see to hear a guitar great at his best! *****

Al Di Meola: "I see a lot of young players online with such super-phenomenal technique – but very rarely do I see it in the framework of a composition"
The fusion guitar master shares his thoughts on the next generation of players, maintaining speed on the fretboard, and what makes his '59 Gibson Les Paul the best-sounding guitar he's ever played
Best of 2022: Al Di Meola needs no introduction to the guitar-playing masses. His complex chordal figures, super speed-infused guitar solos, and six-string sonic intensity has influenced hordes of guitarists ever since Di Meola first burst upon the scene in 1974 as a 19-year-old guitarist for jazz fusion exponents Return To Forever.
But it was when he ventured out into a solo career that began with his 1976 debut outing, Land of the Midnight Sun , that Di Meola's Latin charged guitar mastery really began his ascension to the top of the guitar playing establishment, in turn cementing his reputation as one of the titans of the guitar world.
Now almost 50 years later, Al Di Meola remains at the top of his game. He recently sat down with Guitar World to discuss his evolution as a composer, his approach to practising and why his Latin fused music fuels his creativity.
In what what ways do you think your songwriting process has evolved during the course of your career?
“I ask myself the same question sometimes. If self-analysed, I do see an interesting evolution of advanced writing. I had great inspiring artists like Astor Piazzolla and Chick Corea that were sometimes more importantly viewed as the great composers they were, more than just the great players.
“At my age now, I like to see myself viewed more as the composer-guitarist than any other configuration of words or titles. When I started out, I was the guitarist and then I slowly became a composer, and now after 35 solo albums, I’ve now switched the titles.”
Do you still adhere to a strict practice routine after all these years, especially when it comes to speed?

“I do love to practice. Practicing keeps your fingers nimble and practicing speed or velocity and difficult passages is very important. I feel though that if you stop practicing, you can actually slow down, so it’s a constant, almost a struggle to maintain the speed that was once there in my 20s. But it takes a lot of hard work, so I do work on those aspects, though not so much as I work on my writing capabilities, but it is all important stuff.”
Are there any finger exercises you’d recommend to guitarists?
“Just about anything that I write is a finger exercise unto itself. I practice a lot of the difficult passages that I write, and those are enough of a finger exercise for me for the most part.”
Your technique has inspired many players to spend hours with a metronome. However, some people misinterpret speed and technique as something that prevails over the actual substance of the song. What are your thoughts on this topic?
“I see a lot of young players online with such super-phenomenal technique and in many cases, super-phenomenal lines, which are just incredible and very impressive, but very rarely ever do I see it in the framework of a composition, especially an original composition. So, it’s how it’s all applied.
“It’s one thing to come up with a lot of fast interesting lines which in itself is interesting, but it’s another thing to see how it will be applied within the context of a composition, and that is something that doesn’t go hand in hand. It’s like a whole separate side of a musician that you might not even have. You might just be a hot gun. To write music is a whole other profession, and that is something that eventually you’ll get to as you the player matures in some cases, but not all cases.”
When it comes to your current gear setup, what does it consist of?
“I play mostly acoustic guitar and I’m very happy using this one amp called AER, which is made in Germany. I like the two models but I prefer the smaller acoustic one. I use an [Electro-Harmonix] Oceans 11 reverb with that, too.
“I kind of shied away from my pedalboard because I used to a use a Roland VG-88, and at times I will go back to the VG-88 which enables me to MIDI interface some sounds with my nylon acoustic – a signature model made by Felipe Conde in Madrid. It combines an RMC pickup and it also enables me to also activate sounds that I can blend in with a foot pedal from the VG-88 unit.
“For electric, which I’m starting to now enter back into the picture, I found this new incredible-sounding amp made by a company that’s called Mad Professor, an amp that is made in England. It’s one of the best sounding amps I’ve heard in the last 20 or 30 years.”
Do you have a large guitar collection?
“I do have a large collection, but I’m not a collector; I’m more of an acquirer. I just acquired these guitars, I didn’t go out with the intention of becoming a collector for investment purposes. But I do have some that I consider to be noteworthy.”
What would those guitars be?
“My 1971 Les Paul Custom, which was the one I used with Return To Forever and on all of those records and it’s also on Land of the Midnight Sun , my first record and my second record, Elegant Gypsy , with the guitar also on the cover of that album. There’s a lot of history with that guitar and is probably the most historic guitar because of its connection with my early start in the business.
I’ve compared my 1959 Les Paul Custom to other Les Pauls and it truly is the best-sounding one. No doubt about it
“As time went on, I acquired some other guitars, like a 1959 Les Paul Custom which is considered the holy grail of the best-sounding of all Les Pauls. I’ve compared that guitar to other Les Pauls and it truly is the best-sounding one. No doubt about it. Mostly it comes down to the wood they used, which was already aged when it was built.
“I also have several Conde Hermanos guitars which I find to be really valuable as well. I also have a 1948 Martin steel-string, which is an incredible guitar. It is a dark-sounding but super-sustaining D-18.”
You've never been afraid to explore different genres over the course of your career. How important do you think it is for a guitarist to be well-versed in playing different musical styles?
“If you feel you want to do that and you have a certain slant on a different style, there would be nothing stopping a musician from doing anything they wanted to do really. If you’re doing something you don’t like, then that’s a good gauge for knowing that you shouldn’t be doing it.
“Exploring other genres is fine if you feel like its something you want to do. I’ve always primarily infused Latin rhythms from all different kinds of sub categories within the Latin family from the Tango to the Islands like Cuba and Puerto Rico which have a certain kind of Latin sound. Then there is the whole other side of the European Latin thing like Flamenco. And then there’s also South America, like Brazil which is like night and day different to the Argentine tango; there’s no relation whatsoever. But it’s still a form of Latin music.
“So, all of those sub-idioms under the title of Latin music have always made their way into a large majority of my own style of writing along with some Middle eastern influences, as I love some of the Middle Eastern phrasing and scales.”
Looking back to your first four solo albums, which cemented your guitar reputation, how do you view them today, some 40 years later?
“I’m really proud of them because I made some very good decisions very early on. Had I made mistakes in my decisions, I might not have had as you say, cemented my guitar reputation, because I used the best.
“Steve Gadd was the best. I used Jaco Pastorius, the best too. Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, Jan Hammer, Anthony Jackson on bass with a pick, they’re the best. I was in a very good position to get the best players and as a result, the rehearsals were never super-long, as these guys were used to doing recording sessions where they’d go in and just read and record and then go onto the next session.
“Every one of those players were supreme readers and what they brought to the table was a lot. I could write whatever and whatever I wrote, because of their experience and expertise and their feel, they would bring something to the music. It wouldn’t just be what I wrote. And those are the kind of players that are the most impressive. So, on those first four, five and even six albums, I really made the right decision by using mostly the same combinations of those guys.”
- Al Di Meola's latest release with Paco de Lucía and John McLaughlin, Saturday Night in San Francisco , is out now via Impex Records.

Guitarist Al Di Meola has announced his plan to resume touring in 2024 after suffering a heart attack during a performance in Romania on Wednesday.
The musician posted a statement on Thursday addressing the incident: “I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love and support that I’ve received during the last 24 hours. Unfortunately, I’m facing a medical situation that requires some time off from performing and touring. I want to assure you that I’m receiving the best care possible, and I’m fully committed to making a complete recovery.”
Popular on Variety
“Music has always been a source of healing and strength for me, and I can’t wait to be back on stage, sharing my music with all of you,” Di Meola said in the statement. “The energy and connection I feel when I perform are truly special, and I always felt that I can say things throughout the years with my music more than words can express.”
Di Meola also included the official statement from his team for fans and ticket holders, explaining that his 2023 shows would be postponed and that tickets would remain valid for rescheduled dates.
“Al Di Meola, along with his team, deeply appreciates the support and understanding of his fans during this challenging time. He is eager to return to the stage and share his music with you all once again,” the statement read.
At his Wednesday performance in Bucharest, Romania, Di Meola began to clasp his chest in the middle of his set before reportedly walking off stage. The other two members of his group continued to play after Di Meola left before announcing the show was over.
The Bagdasar-Arseni emergency hospital told AP News in a statement that he was admitted to a cardiology ward where he was being treated for a segment elevation myocardial infarction.
Di Meola rose to fame as the guitarist of the group Return to Forever in 1974. He has since won several awards, including a Grammy, for his jazz fusion and world music.

Tarbaby, Al Di Meola, Fieldwork and more in Moment's Notice
We’re looking at another stacked week ahead for live jazz in Philadelphia, even for those of us who didn’t act fast enough to score a ticket to Laufey at The Met. Take note of three stunning collective trios — Tarbaby, Fieldwork, and Wonderful Sound 3 — as well as guitar hero Al Di Meola, now on the comeback trail. As always, let us know if you have feedback, or an event to share. See you out there!
Spotlight: Tarbaby — Friday and Saturday, Solar Myth
Fearsome conviction is the only acceptable mode for this collective trio, a working unit for more than 15 years. With Orrin Evans on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums, it’s a band that can rumble straight down the middle, or swerve into all manner of detours, always with a hypersensitivity to dynamics, timbre and tone. The most recent Tarbaby album, Dance of the Evil Toys , featured the eminent alto saxophonist Oliver Lake, and previous releases have drawn in collaborators like trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and tenor saxophonist JD Allen. For this two-nighter in Philadelphia, Evans’ hometown, the group will feature a successive pair of spoken-word performers: local legend Ursula Rucker (on Friday) and the city’s current poet laureate, Kai Davis (on Saturday).
May 10 and 11 at 8 p.m., Solar Myth, 1131 South Broad Street, $30; purchase tickets .
Even Odds — Tuesday, Solar Myth
Drummer-composer Dan Weiss named this band, and its bracing new album , with a mind geared toward gameplay. Most of his music for the group builds on complex miniatures that his brilliant conversation partners, pianist Matt Mitchell and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, are free to expand upon through spontaneous interplay. It’s a recipe for moment-to-moment excitement — especially here, at the tail end of a nine-date tour.
May 7 at 8 p.m., Solar Myth, 1131 South Broad Street, $30; purchase tickets .
Al Di Meola — Friday, Keswick Theatre
Last year, this jazz-rock and world-music guitar hero scared a lot of fans when he suffered a heart attack onstage in Romania. He has since returned to form and then some, releasing his first new studio album in four years, Twentyfour . Di Meola rolls into Philly under the banner of The Electric Years Tour, which suggests a set list drawing from his tenure in Return to Forever as well as callbacks to early solo efforts like Elegant Gypsy and Land of the Midnight Sun.
May 10 at 8 p.m., Keswick Theatre, 291 North Keswick Avenue, Glenside, $40; purchase tickets .
NDR Bigband & Kinan Azmeh — Friday, Penn Live Arts
Kinan Azmeh , a Syrian clarinetist and composer based in New York City, joined forces a few years ago with the NDR Bigband , Germany’s pacesetting large ensemble, for an album titled Flow. They reunite this week for a concert that will once again feature Azmeh’s folkloric yet future-forward music, arranged and conducted by Wolf Kerschek.
May 10 at 8 p.m., Zellerbach Theater, Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut Street, $29-80; purchase tickets .
Wonderful Sound 3 — Saturday, Black Squirrel Club
Alto saxophonist, composer and local luminary Bobby Zankel convenes a special edition of his Warriors of the Wonderful Sound — a trio, hence Wonderful Sound 3 — with a couple of distinguished partners well equipped to match his instinct for exploratory fire. They are pianist and multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore and drummer Pheeroan akLaff, who join him here for a concert loosely pegged to Mother’s Day.
May 11 at 8 p.m., Black Squirrel Club, 1049 Sarah Street, $15 to $25; purchase tickets .
Fieldwork — May 12, Painted Bride Art Center
Formed at the turn of this century by pianist Vijay Iyer and two collaborators, Fieldwork long ago evolved into a collective with Iyer, alto saxophonist Steve Lehman and drummer Tyshawn Sorey — a combustible yet distinctly ego-free alignment of composer-improvisers with radical ideas. Last year, the group performed together for the first time in years, at Solar Myth; this follow-up, part of the Jazz on Market series at the Painted Bride, is co-presented by J. Michael Harrison , host of The Bridge on WRTI.
May 12 at 7 p.m., Painted Bride Art Center, 5212 Market Street, $20 suggested; tickets and information .

After receiving treatment, Di Meola released a statement saying he would put his tour on hold until he recovers:
“I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love and support that I’ve received during the last 24 hours. Unfortunately, I’m facing a medical situation that requires some time off from performing and touring. I want to assure you that I’m receiving the best care possible, and I’m fully committed to making a complete recovery. I’m planning to return in 2024, and I’m already looking forward to making music together once again.”
In a follow-up video Friday, Di Meola’s wife Stephanie gave an update thanking fans for the well-wishes and saying her husband was doing much better.
Di Meola started his career as part of jazz fusion superstars Return to Forever, later branching out on his own to explore fusion and world music.
