Neal Schon Finally Speaks Up About Replacing Arnel Pineda

Neal Schon Finally Speaks Up About Replacing Arnel Pineda | I Love Classic Rock Videos

via Music Mad / Youtube

The future of Journey has been clouded by uncertainty ever since Arnel Pineda, the band’s Filipino vocalist, spoke out against racist remarks and pledged to keep singing, even if it meant parting ways with the iconic group.

Now, guitarist and founding member Neal Schon has stepped into the spotlight, aiming to silence the deafening rumor mill surrounding Pineda’s potential exit.

Schon’s intervention comes at a crucial juncture, following Pineda’s heartfelt address that resonated deeply with fans and ignited discussions about inclusivity and respect within the music industry.

With tensions simmering and fans eagerly awaiting answers, Schon’s voice holds the potential to either soothe anxieties or exacerbate the drama.

“We are better than ever!”

Journey’s guitarist and founding member, Neal Schon, has shut down rumors circulating online about Arnel Pineda’s potential departure from the band. In a fiery Facebook post, he denounced “idiotic, relentless rag mag bulls**t articles” and emphasized that the band “are better than ever!”

Schon’s message serves as a much-needed dose of clarity for fans concerned about the band’s future. He reaffirmed their commitment to each other and expressed excitement for their upcoming tour, starting February 9th. This news comes after Pineda’s recent statement about facing racism and his dedication to continuing his music journey, regardless of the band.

Journey’s 2024 promises to be packed with action. Not only will they embark on their own tour, but they’ll also reunite with rock legends Def Leppard for a summer stadium tour, building on their successful collaborations from the past.

With Schon’s statement and the upcoming shows, it’s clear that Journey is ready to rock on, silencing doubts and fueling anticipation for their next chapter.

“I won’t stop singing with or without Journey”

Pineda has faced a barrage of negativity since joining the band in 2007. His Asian heritage, coupled with the iconic band’s predominantly white lineup, sparked a wave of racism and doubt from some fans. However, Pineda refuses to be silenced.

In a recent Instagram post, Pineda addressed his critics head-on, calling out “bashers, foes, racists, bigots, haters,” and declaring: “No matter what or how you will name me, I won’t stop singing with or without Journey… It’s in my blood…”

His message resonated with many, highlighting his unwavering passion for music and his determination to overcome prejudice. He acknowledges his desire for a better life and recognition but emphasizes that being part of Journey was never a calculated move, but rather a dream come true.

Pineda’s defiant stance speaks volumes about his character and talent. Whether it’s “fate, destiny, divine intervention, or pure luck,” his journey with Journey is an inspiration to anyone facing discrimination or doubt.

The Filipino vocalist remained humble and forgiving

Against the backdrop of John Lennon’s “Love”, Pineda continued addressing his detractors, offering an apology for any perceived pain while emphasizing his unwavering belief in unity and forgiveness. His poignant message, echoing Lennon’s call for peace and love, highlighted his resilience in the face of prejudice.

This spirit of acceptance wasn’t confined to Pineda’s own words. The band members themselves, along with their legendary former vocalist, Steve Perry, had extended a warm welcome to the Filipino singer.

Perry’s public acknowledgment of Pineda during the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony symbolized the band’s embrace of their new frontman. Even Pineda’s predecessor, describing their first encounter, spoke of it as a “glorious moment”.

This chorus of acceptance stands in stark contrast to the negativity Pineda faced. It serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, true talent and genuine connection can find a welcoming haven.

Arnel Pineda Leaving Journey? Frontman Says Group Can ‘Fire’ Him Anytime Amid Bandmates’ Feud

Arnel Pineda

Journey is currently touring from to city to city to celebrate their 50th anniversary and even though they look civil while performing on stage, there are many issues that fans aren't aware of that are happening behind closed doors. More recently, Arnel Pineda seemingly expressed his true feelings amid the feud of his bandmates.

The current frontman's name wasn't involved in the issue until Neal Schon opened up about Gregg Rolie  joining them on tour last month.

The original plan didn't push through and the musician's wife, Michaele Schon, claimed that the reason behind it was because there were two band members in the current lineup that are "adamant no" with the idea.

m with the band to sing the legacy..if some of them are tired of me being with them, with all means, they can fire me anytime.. and don’t lecture me about spiritual BS.. #walkthetalk — Arnel Pineda (@arnelpineda) February 4, 2023

At the time, Pineda took to his official Twitter account  after receiving negative comments on social media as many fans believe that it was him and Jonathan Cain who were against with the idea of Rolie coming back to Journey.

"You people are unbelievable... whoever's spreading rumor about me regarding the #GregRollie  issue are maliciously ignorant..im not gonna stoop down to your level.." he wrote.

More recently, the frontman spoke out again, seemingly airing out his frustration about the issue of his bandmates without naming anyone, saying he's part of Journey to "sing the legacy."

"If some of them are tired of me being with them, with all means, they can fire me anytime.. and don't lecture me about spiritual BS," he wrote .

Pineda later added another tweet, telling haters to stop reminding him where he came from because it's in his heart every day.

Following this, former frontman Jeff Scott Soto shared a positive message  for the vocalist, saying he doesn't owe anyone any explanation because he's a kind person and he should "stay the course" regardless of how many people wanted to break him down.

The recent tweet comes after Neal Schon sued  Jonathan Cain after claiming that he had been denied access to the band's financial records.

The musician alleged that his bandmate set up a credit card using Journey's name without asking for consent and millions of dollars "flowed through it."

Cain explained that the main reason behind his feud with Schon was because of his "reckless spending" and his allegations regarding the access to records were false.

Journey frontman Arnel Pineda breaks silence over band feud

did arnel quit journey

Lead singer of American rock band Journey , Arnel Piñeda , can no longer hold back from talking about the feud between two of his bandmates that broke out earlier this year and became public.

Tension continues to brew within the band up to now amidst Journey's ongoing 50th anniversary Freedom tour , fueled further by misleading reports spreading like wildfire across social media.

Journey members (L-R) Marco Mendoza, Jason Derlatka, Arnel Pineda, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Deen Castronovo

Arnel, who is not involved in the legal financial dispute between guitarist Neal Schön and keyboardist Jonathan Cain , found himself caught up in another issue after the Facebook post of Neal's wife Michaele Sch ön made the rounds online.

She shared (published as is), "TWO BAND MEMBERS of the Journey current LINE UP ARE 'adamant NO' against Gregg Rolie to return.

"Neal Schön and Gregg ROLIE will be somewhere Together at least one time this Year in Honor of what they began in 1972 .

"Faith, let’s ask God to find a way for them. let’s pray for forgiveness for those who hurt Gregg ROLIE and hope they learn what spirituality is someday .We all love you !!"

After the post went viral, fans were prompted to theorize that the two band members opposing Gregg Rolie's return are Arnel and Jonathan.

Arnel Pineda tweet

Then again on February 5, 2023, he dropped two posts addressing the negative press he continues to get to this day.

He wrote (published as is), "m with the band to sing the legacy..if some of them are tired of me being with them, with all means, they can fire me anytime..

"and don't lecture me about spiritual BS..#walkthetalk"

Arnel Pineda tweet

His follow-up tweet read: "all i know? is #ivepaidmydues so stop reminding me where i came from..coz it's in my heart everyday..

"you just don't pay attention..im not a slave..im a human being like anybody else..

"#wrongiswrong #rightisright that simple.."

Arnel Pineda tweet

In an attempt to quash the worsening band conflict, Arnel once again tweeted three days later on February 8, 2023: "so much hatred people..we're on the brink of WWIII..

"lets just spread LOVE...

"don't you think its better to die being loved that being hated? [heart emojis]"

A misunderstanding on Twitter caused by a fan, turned out that  Journey’s Neal Schon  and singer  Arnel Pineda  recently reconciled after a dispute, saying they had never ceased to be friends.

Here’s what the fan tweeted:

“Since Arnel Pineda and Neal Schon  have recently become friends again, I think he could become the one with the most new songs in a few years, by the way. I just counted Arnel Pineda has sung 38 new songs spread out on three albums making him the second most productive lead singer in Journey .”

Schon replied back:

“We were never not friends. Just misunderstandings and bullsh*t created by trolls.”

JOURNEY's DEEN CASTRONOVO Says Soundman Change Resolved ARNEL PINEDA's Long-Running Vocal Issues: He's 'Singing Better Than Ever'

JOURNEY drummer Deen Castronovo , who rejoined the band i 2021 after a six-year break, has told Dave Spuria of The Real Music Observer that JOURNEY frontman Arnel Pineda is "singing better than ever" on the group's current U.S. tour. "We had to change our front-of-house guy," he explained (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ). " Arnel was having a hard time hearing; he's been fighting this for years. And we finally figured out, after years and years, that the soundman, our front-of-house guy, has been just pushing the mixes that Arnel was turning up his in-ears — turn 'em up, turn 'em up — and his ears would close up. And he was having a hard time; he was struggling to hear himself . Now that we got this new soundman, who used to work with Shawn Mendes , so this guy really has stuff dialed in — a young guy. Arnel , man, it was just like a flip of the switch. All of us were just, like, 'Oh my gosh.' I mean, he hasn't lost it. And we were all concerned, like, 'Man, maybe he's just having a hard time. It's just a hard catalog. That's hard to do every night.' And we helped him out the best we could. But this changed everything, bro. It's night and day."

According to Deen , "99 percent" of Arnel 's vocal issues in the past were caused by "what he was hearing and what he couldn't hear. And oh my gosh, man. Once we figured that out… This is our fifth show in with this new soundman… It's, like, oh my God. He's back," Castronovo said. "He sounds great. He sounds like he did in 2008. It's, like, wow! What an amazing event to have that happen and finally figure that out, after all these years, that that was the issue. And he said, he goes, 'Man, I've been fighting this for 10 or 12 years now… Unbelievable, man. It took one guy to just bring everything down and dial it in better. And he's soaring now — he's soaring again. It's unbelievable."

Deen went on to say that the soundman change has resulted in the members of JOURNEY having a lot more fun while performing. "You can see it in [ Arnel 's] demeanor on stage now," he said. "He's just smiling. That's why I never want that gig ever — I would never wanna be a frontman or a lead singer 'cause it's so much pressure. And to have that kind of pressure knowing, like, 'I don't know what's going on here.' And for him to barrel through that and plow through and finally get the relief, that weight lifted off, has gotta be… Oh my God. We're goofin' off on stage; he's laughing. It's, like, oh my God, my brother's back. Oh my gosh."

Born in the Philippines, Pineda has been fronting the legendary rockers since 2007 when JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon discovered him leading a Manila cover band on YouTube . A vocal doppelganger for JOURNEY 's longtime vocalist Steve Perry , Arnel has helped put JOURNEY back in arenas once again. But some fans were not happy about the addition of Pineda , complaining about his ethnicity and dismissing his voice as a "copycat" of Perry .

As a member of JOURNEY , Pineda has co wrote and performed on a pair of studio recordings, 2008's "Revelation" and 2011's "Eclipse" , as well as a concert DVD, 2009's "Live In Manila" .

Arnel is also a philanthropist, whose foundation, Arnel Pineda Foundation, Inc. ( APFI ),is a non-stock, non-profit, and independent Philippine foundation that provides underprivileged children quality education, health services and medical attention.

Pineda has overcome a tremendous number of obstacles throughout his life including, the loss of his mother at a young age, homelessness and borderline starvation, making him an inspiration and providing hope for millions of people around the globe. Blessed with the ability to give back, Pineda mobilized his team to join the battle against poverty and its ensuing havoc on Philippine youth.

Who Is Arnel Pineda?

After a series of unfortunate events in his childhood, Arnel Pineda found success in Asia as the front man for the group The Zoo. In 2007, he was discovered by Journey guitarist Neal Schon, after a series of YouTube videos were posted of him covering American songs, including the famous hit, "Dont Stop Believin'." In December 2007, Pineda became the new lead singer of Journey. His is noted for having a strikingly similar sound to former Journey front man Steve Perry.

Troubled Childhood

Arnel Pineda was born on September 5, 1967, in Sampaloc, Manila, in the Philippines. Throughout his childhood, Pineda endured grave misfortune. When he was just 13 years old, his mother, who was 35 at the time, passed away after a long battle with heart disease. Her medical costs left the family in serious debt, and Pineda's father could no longer provide for Pineda and his three younger brothers, Russmon, Roderick and Joselito.

While relatives were able to take in his brothers, Pineda was left on his own. He spent the next few years homeless, often sleeping outside in public parks and scraping for any food or water that he could afford. When possible, he would stay at a friend's house, who offered him a cot outside. Eventually, Pineda was forced to quit school and take up odd jobs collecting scrap metal and bottles at the pier and selling newspapers to support his family.

Early Career

Pineda's love of music started at a young age. He began singing at just five years old, and had entered many singing contests as a child. In 1982, when he was 15, Pineda was introduced to a local band called Ijos, and was encouraged by his friends to try out as their new lead singer. He sang the Beatles' "Help" and Air Supply's "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All." Although they were concerned with his lack of training, Ijos members were wowed by Pineda's powerful voice, and took him on as the new front man of the band. One of the band member's friends even offered to pay Pineda's salary, 35 pesos a night, out of his own pocket, and Pineda was offered a tiny room to sleep under the guitarist's front stairs.

In 1986, some members of Ijos joined together to form the new pop-rock band Amo. The group found success covering songs by hit groups Heart, Queen and Journey. In 1988, they turned heads when they won the Philippines' leg of the Yamaha World Band Explosion Contest. Although they were disqualified in the finals due to a technicality, the event was broadcast on TV in Asia, widening their fanbase. The band continued performing at popular clubs and arenas around the Philippines.

In 1990, the members re-grouped yet again, under the new name Intensity Five, and re-entered the contest. The band came in as runner up and Pineda won the Best Vocalist Award. After a series of unfortunate health problems in the early '90s, including the brief loss of his voice, Pineda re-emerged in 1999 with a new solo album with Warner Brothers. The self-titled album had several hits in Asia.

After brief stints with a few different bands, Pineda found success again in 2006 with The Zoo, a band that he formed with Monet Cajipe, a guitarist/songwriter who had been in all his bands during over the previous 20 years. The Zoo performed at several popular clubs in the area and, in 2007, released an album by MCA Universal titled Zoology . Soon the band began covering songs by groups such as Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles and more, with more than 200 performances uploaded to YouTube.

On June 28, 2007, Neal Schon, guitarist and member of the band Journey, saw a video of Pineda on YouTube and immediately contacted him. The band had been looking for a new lead singer, and Pineda's voice sounded strikingly similar to Steve Perry, Journey's legendary former front man. After speaking with Schon on the phone, Pineda made arrangements to fly to the United States and audition with the band in San Francisco. On December 5, 2007, Pineda was welcomed as the band's new lead singer.

Right away, Pineda went on tour with the band, performing two shows in Chile and two in Las Vegas. Both were a huge success. After a series of guest show appearances and magazine features, Pineda gained popularity within the American public. On June 3, 2008, the newly organized Journey released their first album, Revelation , which came in at No. 5 on the U.S. charts. The album was their highest charting album since Trial by Fire (with Steve Perry), and reached platinum status by October 2008.

Soon after the album's release, the band continued touring around the world with Pineda. The documentary, Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey , slated to be released in 2012, will chronicle the band's "Revelation Tour," and Pineda's first years with the band.

Personal Life

When he is not on tour, Pineda resides in the Philippines with his wife, Cherry, their children, Cherub and Thea. He has two other sons—Matthew, 19, and Angelo, 13—from past relationships.

Arnel Pineda: Journey to go on a hiatus after 2016

did arnel quit journey

ARNEL says he sees himself living a simple life after his singing stint is over— having his own little farm and being a great cook. https://arnelpinedarocks.com

In our recent interview with Arnel Pineda, lead vocalist of the American band Journey since late 2007, he said that he and his band mates Neal Schon, Ross Valory, Deen Castronovo and Jonathan Cain might go on a hiatus after 2016. Whether the group would continue touring after the break, Arnel said was still uncertain. “It will depend on the demand,” he pointed out.

But Arnel didn’t look worried in the slightest. He knows that the opportunity of fronting an iconic rock band only comes once in a blue moon, and certainly doesn’t last forever. Once his stint is over, Arnel said he sees himself living a simple life—having his own little farm and being a great cook. And if a good opportunity comes along, “why not pursue a career in the Philippines?” he added.

But right now, Journey is busier than ever. After doing a couple of shows in Singapore, Japan, New Zealand and Australia earlier this year, Journey marched on a series of gigs in the United Kingdom and Germany, which started last May 16. Needless to say, Arnel is determined to savor every show and song onstage.

Excerpts from Inquirer’s interview with Arnel at his recent launch as the ambassador of Puregold’s “Tindahan ni Aling Puring” campaign:

How do you prepare yourself for touring?

I stay away from dairy products and oily food. My diet consists of fruits, vegetables and alternative sources of protein such as tofu. I try to avoid gaining weight as much as possible because it hinders my performance onstage. Touring demands so much energy.

I make sure to go to the gym, get enough sleep and have a complete voice rest. I only start talking an hour or two before a show.

Will you be promoting new stuff in this tour? Any follow-up to “Revelation” (2008) and “Eclipse” (2011)?

We’re just doing shows this time. But we’re convincing our guitarist (Schon) to come up with a new album.

What’s the best part of being on tour?

Just being onstage and seeing people have a good time. It’s so incredible performing in front of 10,000-15,000 people singing along, and giving off great energy. And going to different places, you see different types of crowd and reception.

How about the worst part?

The downside is being away from my family. I get sad and depressed at times. I also hate it when I lose my voice.

How do you deal with your acid reflux?

There was a time when I had to cancel around five shows because I lost my voice due to acid reflux. Being with Journey, I get introduced to very good doctors and specialists. I’m managing the condition with proper medication.

Do you celebrate every successful show?

Yeah, we have wine or champagne. No more hard drinks though—I’m over those!

You were supposed to have a concert here last March 21. Why was it canceled?

It was because of sluggish ticket sales. And I think it was just wrong timing—kids were graduating and people were preparing for Holy Week. Hopefully we can do it in 2015 or earlier. This year and the next are already packed.

You mentioned that the band’s going on a hiatus after 2016? Will you resume touring after?

We’re going to finish our commitments with [entertainment company] Live Nation Entertainment… It depends if there’s still a demand for us to be up onstage. And if there’s clamor from fans for us to perform in different places, then we’ll go out.

What will you do during the band’s hiatus?

I’m working on a solo album. I already have 12 songs which I’ve recorded in my home studio. I’ll try to promote that.

How did you find the documentary “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey”?

Well, medyo nandiri kasi ’di naman tayo artista.  Haha! They even showed me getting a massage. Nag-Coco Martin ako! But it was great! I believe it would inspire artists and musicians who are losing hope that they could succeed, and that miracles could happen. I actually want to turn it into a film.

So are you working on it right now?

I’m talking with investors at the moment. But I have a hard time finding an actor that has the same looks and height. Having a great voice is not really a must. I just want my story to be portrayed well.

You were also very open about your vices in the documentary—alcohol, drugs, etc.

Because I want people to see that these things can really negatively affect our lives. I want to tell all the dreamers out there that they should stay away from vices if they want to succeed; that they need training, guidance and support.

What have you learned from your band mates?

They’re so meticulous. I could say that I’m more disciplined than ever. They also helped me widen my perspective when it comes to songwriting.

You’ve been with the band for more than five years now? Do you believe that fans have fully embraced you as the vocalist?

It was hard in the beginning—with all the comparisons to Steve Perry. But like I’ve always said, I’m not trying to compete with him—I’m just trying to continue the legacy of the band. But now I can say that there are more fans now than critics.

What will you remember most when this journey eventually ends?

The whole experience itself—it was just kind of bizarre in a way. How could a simple guy like me sing for a band like Journey? It’s very rare for an artist born and raised in the Philippines to penetrate the international market. Being with the band was a big blessing and I’m grateful for it.

Arnel Pineda: The Story of Journey’s Lead Singer

June 18, 2023 by Gerald Lacuarta Leave a Comment

Who would have imagined that the lead singer of  Journey would be coming from the Philippines, discovered on the Internet by the legendary band desperately looking for a new voice? Yes, the story of Arnel Pineda is one of rag to riches, filled with stories of hardship, struggles, failures and perseverance. Anel Pineda has mesmerized music fans all over the world as he brought new life to the classic rock band and turned a new generation of fans onto their music. This blog post takes a deep dive into Arnel Pineda’s remarkable journey, from poverty in the Philippines to international success and fame.

Born in the urban district of  Sampaloc, Manila, in 1967, Arnel Pineda grew up in a poor family. Music was his refuge, and he started singing at an early age to make ends meet. By the 1980s, he was performing in Manila’s club scene, but success eluded him. In the early 1990s, he formed his own band, The Zoo, and started performing in Hong Kong’s music scene, where he gained a considerable following.

However, it was a YouTube video of him singing Journey’s classic hits that changed his life forever. The video went viral, and Journey’s lead guitarist, Neal Schon, took notice. Impressed by Pineda’s vocal range and energy, Schon invited him to audition for the band, which he did in 2007.

Arnel’s audition was a success, and he became the lead singer of Journey — filling the big shoes left by renowned Journey vocalist Steve Perry. Arnel’s first concert with them was their 2008 concert in Chile, which drew a record-breaking crowd of 18,000. His energetic performances and powerful voice have won over fans worldwide, and he has helped Journey’s music reach a whole new generation. Old time fans of Journey needed a little more convincing that Arnel was a good replacement for Steve. Sure, doubters have remained to be Steve loyalists, but there is a sense that most Journey fans have accepted Arnel as the new voice of Journey.

Since joining Journey, Pineda has toured with the band extensively, and they have released several albums featuring his vocals. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Journey.

Pineda’s story is an inspiring one. He overcame poverty and worked hard to pursue his passion for music, and his perseverance paid off. His success shows that with talent, determination, and a little luck, dreams can come true.

Arnel Pineda’s Journey story is one for the books not only because of his background but also because of the way he was discovered — through YouTube.

Arnel may have just covered Journey songs before in a tribute band, but his surprising rise to become the Journey’s lead singer has established him as true rock star in his own right.

13 Things We Learned Hanging Out With Steve Perry

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

It’s a punishingly hot August day and Steve Perry is tucked into a corner table at a Lower Manhattan Italian spot taking a quick breather between a long round of radio interviews promoting Traces , his new comeback album that he spent the last five years recording in such secrecy that he made everyone on his team sign strict NDAs. He’s no more than two minutes into our conversation, barely enough time to dip a single piece of bread into olive oil and take a bite, when he stands up and announces he has to leave at once. There’s loud dance pop playing on the radio and it’s driving him crazy.

“This is very distracting,” he says, as a large, tattooed bodyguard and two publicists perched near the bar look on. “I’m hearing drums and rhythm. I have a very ADD, multi-track mind and I can’t listen to two things at once. I just hear these electronic drums. Let’s go outside even though it’s going to be a little sticky.”

With the bodyguard in tow, we head onto the street towards a park overlooking the Hudson River. It’s a complete shift from our plan for the afternoon, but Perry has never been one to stick to a script. Ignoring the desperate pleas of his bandmates, management team and fans, he walked away from Journey near the pinnacle of their success in 1987 to live a quiet life free from screaming crowds and record executives thirsty for another hit. And even when Journey-mania returned again in the mid-2000s and “Don’t Stop Believin'” became absolutely inescapable — used everywhere from the The Sopranos finale to Glee  — he refused to emerge from hiding in any way, allowing his former bandmates to reap the hefty rewards by playing about 70 shows a year with a soundalike they plucked from YouTube.

Dressed head-to-toe in black, Perry walks down the city streets, past throngs of tourists that don’t give him a second look, and attempts to explain why he turned in his rock star card over 30 years ago. “It seemed like the only thing I could do to stop some of the badness in my heart and the lack of passion for singing,” he says. “I just had to stop. I was feeling like a forced version of myself, getting into some bad habits and not connecting to my heart. I was completely deep-fried.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Rolling Stone published an extensive feature on Perry’s life earlier this month, but there was still a lot we learned that didn’t fit into the piece. Here are 13 of them.

1. He became interested in spiritual matters during his lost years. “I don’t attend any religious practices and I’m not religious,” he explains. “But I’ve devoted a lot of time to people like Joseph Campbell who opened the doors to all the theologists that I have opinions about now. It took a lot of open-mindedness to rewire my thinking about so many things. It needed to happen. They say that every seven years your body completely changes, that every cell in your body is no longer the same. There’s a metamorphoses. And right now, I’m more open-minded to the idea of not knowing the answers to all things.”

2. He has a crystal-clear memory of the moment they wrote “Don’t Stop Believin.'” “I know everyone has their own opinion about this,” he says. “I don’t know what Jonathan [Cain] thinks, but I remember it starting out in a warehouse in Oakland where we had a rehearsal space. I suggested we needed something with eighths on the piano because I always liked songs that began like that. It flowed from there. We were all in the room. It was me, Jonathan and Neal [Schon]. It was a true group effort. Then I went to Jonathan’s house and we wrote the lyrics together. There’s no one genius to any one moment. If you’re in a band, what you do is a group effort.”

3. Contrary to widespread rumor, he’s never suffered any vocal issues. “I have my vocal box checked all the time,” he says. “I have no nodules on it. I have a really good doctor. She sticks a camera down my nose. I call it the garden hose. It goes down to the vocal chords and then she grabs my tongue and I have to go, ‘Eeeeeee.’ She’s really able to see them well and, knock on wood, nothing wrong with my voice. The only thing is I didn’t really use if for a while, but it’s like working out when you begin using it again.”

4. His mother pushed him return to Journey in 1985 after he’d taken a long break to focus on his solo career. “I was ready to leave the group because she was so sick,” he says. “She couldn’t speak because she’d had so many strokes. She was also pretty quadriplegic at that point, but she loved my music. I asked her what she thought about it, whether I should make another solo record or go back to Journey. She said one word: ‘Journey.’ I went, ‘Are you sure? Mom, this means I won’t be around you much. Again she just said, ‘Journey.’ Then she died during the making of the record. I dedicated it to her.”

5. The “corporate rock” label that Journey was stuck with still baffles him. “That was amazing to me,” he says. “Any band that came to America, whether it was Led Zeppelin or anybody, would incorporate in order to create a tax shelter and not leave penniless. The way to do that legally is to form a corporation. Everybody did that, but we got stuck with the label. Isn’t that fascinating?”

6. He enjoyed meeting Arnel Pineda at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2017. “He’s a sweet kid,” he says. “We talked for a while backstage. It was really fun.”

7. But he never even considered singing with Journey at the Hall of Fame. “I heard a rumor that the invitation was open,” he says. “But I’m not the singer in the band anymore. Arnel is. He’s been in the band for ten years. I just wanted to come and thank everybody for everything, including Arnel.”

8. He was the last one in Journey to give his approval for The Sopranos to use “Don’t Stop Believin.'” “I wasn’t too excited by the possibility that it might be used when someone is whacked,” he says. “Everyone else was okay with it, but I wanted to know more. So the girl who sub-licenses my music kept on asking David Chase’s people if they could tell us a little more. But since it was the last sequence in the entire show, they were a little tight with information. I told them I wouldn’t say yes unless they told me that nobody got whacked, which is how [Martin] Scorsese would have used it. So I just waited and Thursday afternoon my girl calls and says she just spoke to David Chase’s people and they told me how it ends, but I couldn’t tell anybody. They didn’t tell me the screen turns to black, but they told me everything else. And I said okay that Thursday and it aired on Sunday.”

Trump privately rages about his sketch artist, courtroom nap reports, matty healy is taylor swift's unlikely inspiration and six other takeaways from 'ttpd', trump's super pac has been footing his legal bills. now it's running out of money.

9. Baseball gives him the same sort of satisfaction today that he used to get from music. “The electronic aspect of music just started wearing me out,” he says. “There’s not a lot of live musicians being played on the radio anymore. But when I’m watching baseball, these guys walk out there and hit, play, catch, run…I mean, they’re just killing it. There’s no auto-tune for baseball. They have to play. The musicianship of the music industry used to be that way.”

10. If he does tour, expect to hear a lot of Journey songs. “I don’t know if a tour will happen,” he says. “Right now it’s premature to even guess. But there would be no way in the world I’d go out there and not sing Journey music too. It would be solo and Journey together. But those songs are vocally challenging. They’re challenging for Arnel and everyone else. They’re not easy. They were challenging for me when I wrote the damn melodies, but back then I was young and in my olympic singer mode. [Barbra] Streisand lowers the keys when she does her old songs. There’s nothing wrong with lowering a key We’re not spring chickens.”

11. His time out of the spotlight after he left Journey in 1987 reinvigorated him . “I went back to my hometown and reconnected with old friends,” he says. “I bought a Harley Davidson and rode it around the country roads of my youth. I let the wind hit my face and my hair blowed behind me. There were no helmet laws back then. I disappeared. I went to the fair in the summer. I went to movies. I had dinner with friends. I had relationships. I lived.”

12. Money was never really an issue after he left the band. “I wrote every single song with members of the band with the exception, I think, of one,” he says. “And those songs kept selling. I don’t eat out a lot. I only drive one car a time. I live kind of small, so financially I never really had to work. There were certainly some sweet [royalty] checks as the years went by, but I’ll tell you something else: I was probably one of the only guys who saved his money. A lot of people were living very extravagant lifestyles. I was not raised that way. My grandfather said to me when I was very young, ‘It’s not how much you make, it’s how much you save.’ So I lived small and saved my money.”

13. When pushed, he refuses to make a Shermanesque statement that he’ll never, under any circumstances, return to Journey, even though it’s highly unlikely. “The only thing I’m willing to be definitive about is that at this age I am right now, I have to do things that I feel really great about, that feel life-sustaining and give me passion,” he says. “I really want to continue to move forward. I’m not too excited about going backwards. I’m more excited about moving forward to what is next. I’ve already written a lot more new material, in fact.”

Two members of Journey fired after legal battle over the band’s name

Two members of the rock group Journey have been fired from the band following legal disputes over the rights to the name of the band.

According to court documents filed in the Superior Court of the State of California, longtime band members Ross Valory and Steve Smith attempted a “corporate coup d'état” against guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain by attempting to buy Nightmare Productions, a corporate entity connected to the band.

In response, Schon and Cain have fired Valory and Smith.

“As a result, Schon and Cain removed Smith and Valory from Journey ,” the court filing states. “By letter dated March 3, 2020, Schon and Cain provided notice to Smith and Valory that they are no longer members of Journey; and that Schon and Cain have lost confidence in both of them and are not willing to perform with them again.”

The same documents state that Nightmare Productions has no legal claim to the band, and that Schon and Cain have a written agreement from former Journey singer Steve Perry that grants them exclusive rights to the name and trademark Journey logo.

The band was originally founded in 1973, with Schol and Valory as founding members. Steve Perry joined in 1977 as lead singer, with Smith joining in 1978 and Cain in 1980. The band went through several lineup changes throughout the years, with Schon and Cain remaining as members throughout. Arnel Pineda has performed with the band as lead singer since 2007.

Journey is scheduled to perform in Hershey on September 11 along with The Pretenders.

How Journey’s Arnel Pineda Came to Love ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’

Arnel Pineda said he wasn't a fan of Journey ’s signature song “Don’t Stop Believin’” until he joined the band and realized it had been “waiting” for him throughout his career.

The singer endured what he called a “tough and cruel path” to success before Journey signed him up in 2007. In a new interview with Loudwire , he said he had preferred other songs from the band’s catalog until that point. “Honestly, I was not a big fan of the song at first,” he admitted.

“‘Open Arms’ … was the very first song I heard from them. … When I became a professional singer, a cover singer at the age of 16 years old, ‘Open Arms’ was the first song that I sang. ... I think my three most favorite songs are ‘Faithfully,’ ‘Winds of March’ and ‘Why Can’t This Night Go on Forever.’ Mr. Steve Perry ’s voice there is absolutely perfect. It just gets me going. When I’m sad or I’m happy, they just make me think about the good things in life.”

Pineda reflected on his more negative moments, saying he was the victim of bullying as a boy and that he had struggled with the death of his mother just before his singing career began. In 2005, he remembered, “I had to resign from my band because I lost my voice. ... It was a tough and cruel path until I met Journey.”

Things began turning around for him in 2007, when guitarist  Neal Schon made contact. “We had a good talk first, and he invited me over to San Francisco and I met [Journey],” he said. That 's when he changed his mind about “Don’t Stop Believin’." “I finally realized, this song has been waiting for me to realize that it was the soundtrack of my life. It really means so much to me now, and now every time that I go for something, it suddenly rings in my head. It’s those three words: Don’t stop believin’.”

Pineda added: “To be in this band – because some people still consider me a karaoke singer, blah, blah, blah, whatever – I’m just proud and so grateful. I feel so blessed because I was given a chance to be part of such an iconic American band known around the world. What more could you ask for?”

The Truth About How Arnel Pineda Joined Journey

Arnel Pineda Journey Band Singer

Arnel Pineda's path to Journey is something out of a Hollywood movie, complete with tragedy and triumph.

Pineda, who became the lead singer of the band in 2007, was discovered by lead guitarist Neal Schon on Youtube and the rest was history. According to Pineda's official website biography, Schon saw Pineda singing with his then band The Zoo on Youtube and was impressed by how much he sounded like former Journey lead singer Steve Perry. But his path to stardom was very different.

Pineda grew up in the Philippines, where he began his career from the very bottom. He said in a 2010 interview that he left school early after his mother died and his family had to leave their old apartment. He lived in the streets of Manila for two years, working odd jobs, bathing out of gas station water barrels, and surviving off sardines and rationed biscuits. By the time he was 15, he had joined a band and began making a name for himself.

Over the next decade, he would continue performing to larger audiences, which eventually led to gigs in Hong Kong. A friend of Pineda's uploaded one of these performances to Youtube and a star was born.

The journey to Journey

Pineda told Rolling Stone  that Schon found his friend's email and asked how he could contact the singer. When news reached Pineda that Journey's guitarist was looking for him, he thought it was a joke.

"When my friend forwarded the email to me, I was just laughing," Pineda told Rolling Stone in 2017. "I just told him that this is one of the biggest jokes I have ever received from someone. 'It's a hoax,' I tell him. 'You shouldn't believe it.'"

But Pineda did email Schon back and flew to California to meet with him for a week of intense, nerve-wracking auditions. Finally, in December 2007, Journey announced Pineda as its new lead singer.

Now, Pineda's story may soon be turned into Hollywood film, directed by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu. According to the Philippine news website ABS-CBN , Pineda met with the director and other producers to get the ball rolling, stating in Filipino that he's excited for the movie to happen so that other dreamers like him can find much-needed inspiration, and that it might open more doors for other Filipino and Asian artists.

If it pans out, this won't be the first time Pineda's story was told on film. The 2012 documentary Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey followed the band on one of its tours, including Pineda's homecoming concert in Manila.

Steve Perry leaves Journey

When and why did Steve Perry leave Journey?

Marco Vito Oddo

Journey helped set the soundtrack for the 1970s and 1980s, with hits that are still remembered as some of the best songs ever written. However, the band couldn’t count on lead singer Steve Perry for most of their existence.

Journey was formed in 1973, a union of several experienced musicians trying to create a new sound experience. As the jazz fusion project didn’t work as well as Journey had hoped, the band was forced to experiment with new genres and invite new members. The version of Journey we all know and love began in 1977 when Perry joined as the band’s lead singer and songwriter. As the frontman, he made history, using his vocal talents to turn hits such as “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Open Arms” into the anthems of a generation.

Though Journey’s explosive success established them as one of the biggest musical influences of the 1980s, Perry left the band in 1987. It would be the first time, but not the last, that Perry and Journey went in different directions.

Why did Steve Perry leave Journey in 1987?

In 1987, Journey was at the peak of its success. Since Perry joined the band, they released hit after hit, attracting millions of fans to their live performances worldwide. However, to fans’ despair, Perry left Journey to pursue a solo career.

The lead singer position gave Perry the attention he needed to ensure he would succeed in his solo career. Furthermore, since Perry had creative differences with Journey, he could focus his creative energy by flying solo without making concessions or negotiating with other band members. In addition, things were somewhat tense within the band before Perry’s departure, with the lead singer firing founding bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith during the recording of 1986’s Raised on Radio — the two would return to the band in 1995. Hence, his departure wasn’t entirely shocking. Still, Perry’s absence impacted Journey.

Journey would remain popular without Perry, but they never repeated the success of their 1980s run. Likewise, Perry is mainly remembered for the songs he wrote or co-wrote for the band, not for his solo career. Unsurprisingly, though, he would rejoin the group in 1995, a new partnership that lasted only three years.

Why Steve Perry and Journey parted ways in 1998?

With Perry back in the folder, Journey launched a new studio album in 1996, Trial by Fire . The album got three charting singles and a Grammy nomination , with fans eager to see the band hitting the road again for a new world tour. The tour plans derailed after Perry’s ski accident in the same year. He needed hip surgery to get back on stage in time for the tour, which he refused to get. His Journey companions waited for him until 1998, post which they decided the band’s future was more important than the selfish decisions of a single person.

The same year Journey hired voice-lookalike Steve Augeri, forging a successful partnership until 2006. In 2007, singer Arnel Pineda became the band’s lead singer, a role that is still his. As for Perry, he showed up on a few special presentations with the team but has primarily remained in the shadows. His story is a bitter reminder that a band is bigger than its frontman, no matter how important they think they are.
