Dessert offerings will include Rachel's Thanksgiving trifle — without the meat — cheesecake, and more.

Additionally, the tour has recreated sets inspired by Joey and Chandler's apartment and Monica's apartment, where you can dine at Monica's kitchen table or even on her sofa. (No crumbs allowed!)

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood

Kayte Deioma

Warner Bros. Studios (usually spoken as Warner Brothers Studios) is a movie and television studio in Burbank, California, just north of Los Angeles, where popular TV shows and blockbuster movies continue to be made. Warner Bros. Studios, with its iconic WB water tower, can be visited on a Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood.  Although they added "Hollywood" to the tour name, Burbank is actually on the other side of a mountain, about a 20-minute drive from the heart of Hollywood .

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour is a combination of tram and walking tour that takes you through exterior street sets and into soundstages onto the set of current productions. The tour changes depending on which sets are currently in use, so visiting on different days or different seasons could result in a completely different tour. Usually, tours go onto one talk show set and one fiction set, which might be in the audience area of a sitcom set or walking through interiors used in a current drama.

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is the only one of the LA studio tours , other than Universal Studios Hollywood , that allows children as young as 8 to participate.

In 2015, Warner Bros. assigned Stage 48 a permanent role on the tour, housing a selection of interactive permanent exhibits including the Central Perk set from Friends , where you can act out scenes on video or just take snapshots; a Harry Potter set that demonstrates forced perspective by making one person at the table look much smaller than the other; a number of green screen photo and video opportunities and tons of interactive opportunities to learn about pre and post-production involved in making TV and movies. The activities are all a lot of fun. I tested them out myself. Stage 48 also includes an expanded Studio Store with tons of TV and movie-related clothing and souvenirs.

Deluxe Tours

In addition to the standard Studio Tour, Warner Bros now offers a Deluxe Studio Tour which goes more in-depth, includes post-production facilities and a 3-course lunch in the commissary. Deluxe Tours depart once daily at 10 am.

Warner Bros. Pictures was created around 1918 (incorporated 1923) by the four Warner brothers, (born Wonskolaser) - Harry (born Hirsz), Albert (born Aaron), Sam (born Szmul), and Jack (born Itzhak), who already had a thriving movie theater business.

In the early days, Warner Bros. had a hard time keeping up with older studios like Paramount, MGM and First National, which led them to become innovators just to try to make a profit. In 1927, they created the first film with music and synchronized sound, The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson, and in 1928 the first all-talking feature, Lights of New York . In 1929, they were the first to release an all-color talking feature, On with the Show .

The current Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank, CA was built in 1926 by First National Pictures and acquired by Warner Bros. in 1928 with the money they made form The Jazz Singer . Two of the oldest exterior sets, New York Street, and Ashley Boulevard, formerly known as Brownstone Street, have been used in hundreds of productions since then.

The company has merged, transformed and changed hands many times over the years, but Warner Bros. Pictures has continued to operate (currently as part of the Time Warner conglomerate) as a movie and television production studio with dozens of indoor soundstages and exterior sets. Long-running shows that film at Warner Bros Studios include Ellen and The Big Bang Theory .

Most sets are re-purposed and transformed when a production is finished, but occasionally a set is preserved in its entirety, like the Central Perks coffee shop from Friends , which can be seen on the tour on Stage 48.

Exterior Sets

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is a guided tour that takes you to various set locations on a small tram, kind of like an extended golf cart. At each stop, you get out and explore on foot. Cameras are allowed on the cart and in some outdoor areas and in exhibits, but not inside the soundstages. Exterior locations could include a ride down Brownstone Street, now called Ashley Boulevard or a trip down New York Street, which doubled as Chicago for the filming of the TV show ER . If there's no one using the set, the tour stops at County General Hospital, with the famed Jumbo Mart across the street. Rather than seeing urban Chicago behind the Jumbo Mart, you see the bucolic Hollywood Hills . You might venture through Midwest Street, with its grass lawns, storefronts and central Gazebo used for everything from The Music Man to Gilmore Girls . There's also the original Tenement Street with alleys full of fire escapes resembling New York's Lower East Side. Warner Bros. renamed Tenement Street to Hennesy Street after it was redesigned by art director Dale Henessy for the movie Annie . It was used more recently in the Batman films.

Inside a Soundstage

Which TV or movie set your tour will visit on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood will depend on which sets are not currently taping. On my first tour, we visited the set of the NBC show Chuck . Cameras had to stay locked up in the cart while we explored the courtyard of Chuck's apartment building with its central fountain, carefully navigating cables and ladders, and had a peek at Chuck's apartment. On the "back room at the Buy More" set, our guide Tetris entertained us by casting a couple of tourists to act out a scene while he mimed the cameraman shooting the same scene from many angles. I really wish I had had my camera for that one. We drove by the Ellen soundstage, but taping was in progress so we couldn't visit. Ellen usually tapes Monday through Thursday, so there's not much chance of getting in there except for the occasional Friday and when they're on hiatus.

On my second tour, we visited the Conan O'Brian set and the live audience section of 2 Broke Girls . Personally, I find it more interesting to see the sets where fictional stories are taped, rather than talk show sets, since they're more colorful, but you never know what you're going to get. The selection of sets that tours can visit is much greater when many shows are on hiatus, so summer and holidays are a good time to take the Warner Bros. tour.

The Picture Car Museum

In 2009, Warner Bros Studios opened the Picture Car Museum on the Warner Bros. backlot. The one-room car gallery showcases some of the more spectacular vehicles that have graced the silver screen. Vehicles have included included the Tumbler monster car from The Dark Knight , numerous Batmobiles from all the Batman movies, the British flag car from Austin Powers , the psychedelic Mystery Machine van from Scooby Doo , the Gran Torino from the movie of the same name, a red convertible from the 2008 Get Smart movie and a Nerd Herd car from Chuck , just to name a few.

The Warner Bros Museum

The Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood makes a short stop at the Warner Bros Museum . Our stop might have been extra-short because we dawdled elsewhere and asked a lot of questions. Much of the focus is on costumes and some props. On my most recent visit, the lower level was devoted to all incarnations of Batman for the 75th anniversary. The entire second story of the museum is devoted to all things Harry Potter .

The Friends Set

The popular TV sitcom Friends was filmed on the Warner Bros. lot from 1994 to 2004. After the series finale in 2004, the Central Perk coffee house set was moved from the soundstage and recreated next to the Prop House, then to an exhibit at the Paley Center for a while and back to a new home at Stage 48 where it remains as a historic icon that visitors can explore on the tour. It's also used as part of the Stage 48: Script to Screen interactive exhibit, where visitors can act out scenes from the TV show with cue cards and see themselves inserted in the video with original cast members. When that's not going on, anyone can take a seat and grab a snapshot.

Details of the Friends set include an old laptop computer left open on a table and Phoebe's guitar. The neon lights are still on, and the chalkboard menu offers "Java - filtered through the finest skid row hankies we get a brew so thin you'd think it's tea."

There is also a working Central Perk Coffee House and snack bar in Stage 48 where you can get coffee and sandwiches.

Stage 48: Script to Screen

In 2015, Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood opened Stage 48: Script to Screen , a collection of exhibits and interactive experiences that has added tremendously to the tour experience. Exhibits include the Legacy Exhibit of Emmy's, Academy Awards and historic memorabilia and costume exhibits from past and current shows. You could spend a couple hours doing all the interactive activities like this interactive exhibit that allows you to design your own superhero vehicle.

Green Screen Fun at Stage 48

Of the three green screens in operation when I was there, the Harry Potter flying broom is significantly more fun for video than  Batman  or  Gravity  because you have a lot more screen time and more diverse scenery to navigate.

The Batman scene here is also fast-paced for the video, but you're out of the action more of the time.

No matter how much you liked the movie  Gravity , that one really isn't very interesting, so they'll probably replace it with something else.

The Forced-Perspective Set

Green screen photos and videos are pricey, as at most places, but you can take free photos at the Harry Potter forced-perspective set seen here. The staff photographer will usually even take them for you with your phone or camera.

A forced-perspective set uses specially designed furniture and background to give the impression that some things in the frame are bigger or smaller than others. The camera has to be placed at a very specific spot in relation to the scene to get the desired effect.

Motion Animation on the Warner Bros. Studios Tour

See how human movement creates the motion of animated characters with interactive exhibits in Stage 48 on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood.

Central Perk Revisited

The new Central Perk coffee shop and snack bar in Stage 48 on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is not nearly as comfy as the original set from Friends , but at least they sell real coffee and other refreshments, which are welcome after the 2-hour tour and sometime playing around at Stage 48.

The Warner Bros Visitor Center and Commissary

The ticket counter for purchasing or picking up tickets for the Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood  is inside the Warner Bros Studio Tour Center across from the parking lot. A giant Bugs Bunny outside the front door lets you know you're in the right place.

On the other side of the building, past the security area, is the staff cafeteria, which is a nice place to grab a snack or meal after your tour. You never know who might wander in for a bite.

Warner Bros.' Famous Studio Tour Just Reopened With New 'Friends' Experiences

Now Friends fans can eat Rachel's infamous trifle, sip character-themed coffee, and shop exclusive merchandise on the Warner Bros.' Studio Tour.

friends set tour los angeles

Now you can get a true taste of Friends at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood . The fan experience — which takes place on the actual working Warner Bros. lot in Burbank where the NBC sitcom was originally shot — reopened on Saturday, debuting an expanded Central Perk Café and Friends boutique .

As part of the "Stage 48: Script to Screen" stop on the tour, visitors can now dine on Friends -inspired items, including the infamous English trifle that Jennifer Aniston's character, Rachel Green, made for Thanksgiving. Yes, the one where she accidentally blended a traditional trifle with a shepherd's pie after her cookbook pages got stuck together. (Don't worry, the version served here doesn't have any meat mixed up with the sweet and savory flavors.)

Also on the menu are Central Perk's own cupcakes, New York-style cheesecake (unlike when Rachel and Chandler had to scoop the one from Mama's Little Bakery off the floor, you can eat this off a plate!), and NYC deli favorites like corned beef melts and pizza wedges. There's also a line of drinks inspired by the characters , made with a Central Perk special blend — choose from a matcha latte called The Rachel, a classic flat white called The Ross, a caramel coconut latte called The Chandler, a cookies-and-cream ice blend called The Phoebe, and a mango cold brew tea called The Joey.

All the items can be enjoyed on recreated sets featuring Central Perk, Joey and Chandler's apartment, Monica's apartment, and Greenwich Village. Costumes from the show are also on display. Then cap off the experience by shopping at the Friends boutique with exclusive products not available anywhere else, including kitchen and dining ware.

Friends fans can currently only access the tour and experiences on weekends, but it will expand to five days a week (Thursday through Monday) starting July 15.

The tour also includes other new and expanded features within the Warner Bros. family of entertainment, like a "Storytelling Showcase" documenting the almost-century of Warner Bros. and an "Action and Magic Made Here" exhibit with elements of the DC Universe and Harry Potter films.

Sheldon's apartment from The Big Bang Theory , a Batmobile from Tim Burton's original "Batman," costumes from "Suicide Squad," Harry Potter's recreated cupboard under the stairs, and the late Chadwick Boseman's jersey from "42" are also seen on the tour.

The Friends Experience: The One Near Long Beach

Michael Juliano

Time Out says

Step inside of recreations of classic  Friends sets and pose in front of familiar costumes at this photo-friendly pop-up in Lakewood (Lakewood Center, 4661 Silva St).

Yes, it’s one of  those : an opportunity to snap photos in front of recognizable backdrops (the touring event originated in 2019 , for reference). But for  Friends fans, there are enough reproductions of recognizable sets (Monica and Rachel’s apartment, Joey and Chandler’s apartment, the “pivot!” couch staircase, Central Perk) to make it a fun walkthrough. It’s housed in a former Nordstrom Rack, and the sterile drop ceiling tiles don’t exactly melt away, but they also don’t negatively impact photos if that’s all you’re after (and really, that’s the main sell of a $30-and-up ticket).

Unlike the other touring locations, Southern California already has another genuine  Friends venue: the  Warner Bros. Studio Tour . So what separates the two? At Warners, you can pose for a photo inside the actual Central Perk set on the studio lot where the beloved show was shot. Aside from that, the studio tour offers a pastiche of set tributes that’s part cafe seating area, part gift shop. It’s also only the tail-end of a three-hour-or-so studio tour, and one that costs considerably more than this Long Bech-area event at $70. The Friends Experience is also considerably closer than Burbank for the large chunk of the county that lives south of the 105.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

  • Places to eat – There are a few places to get drinks, snacks, and food whilst at the studios. During the tour, there is also a cute replica of Central Perk, where you can pick up Friends-themed bakery items along with branded Central Perk Coffee.
  • Speak to the guide – If there is a particular set or TV series you love, make sure to let your guide know. As long as the set isn’t being used, guides will do everything they can to make sure you get to see your favorite sets.

The Thorough Tripper

The Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood – A Thorough Review

I love TV.  I have one of those brains that has a hard time relaxing. One of the few ways I can get a break is to watch a show…or two.  My favorites over the years have ranged from Cheers & Seinfeld to Breaking Bad & Survivor to current favorites like Ted Lasso & Fauda. So, when I was tripping activities in the LA area for our recent Rose Bowl trip , and came across the Warner Bros Studio Tour, it seemed like a no-brainer.  A chance to see where and how TV and movies are made?  Sign me up!

First, a Little History

The Warner Bros Hollywood Studio is located in Burbank, about 15 minutes north of downtown LA.  The studio was established all the way back in 1926. Films – and then TV – have been made there for almost 100 years!  The studio sits on 62 acres and is made up of outdoor movie sets, multiple sound stages, and buildings dedicated to all facets of movie & television production.  Well-known films made here include Casablanca, My Fair Lady , Goonies, and several of the Batman movies.  Well-known TV series include Friends and The Big Bang Theory.

The Warner Bros Studio Tour is a great way to see and understand the process that goes into making film and TV.  And I will say right off the bat that the tour exceeded my expectations.  In my research, I discovered that the tour is one of the highest-rated area activities on TripAdvisor. But still, I thought our access to a busy working studio might be somewhat diluted.  Not the case!  It was an in-depth tour with a great deal of insight and access to what seemed like a big portion of the studio.  Plus, it featured a lot of really impressive interactive displays.  Let me show you….

Getting Started

Warner Bros Studio offers a few different kinds of tours. We went on the most popular – The Studio Tour.  This tour starts every 30 minutes between 8:30am and 3:30pm, 5-7 days weekly (depending on the time of year). The Studio recommends that you buy your tickets online ahead of time, though limited walkup tickets may be available depending on demand. The guided portion of the tour lasts about an hour.  Self-guided touring through various displays can take another 1-3 hours depending on how long you want to linger.  We spent 2 hours on the lot.

You can click here to purchase tickets on Viator

Our tour started in a screening room where we watched  a short 5-minute movie quickly covering the Studio’s history.

We were then directed outside where we divided up into smaller groups.  Each group was assigned a guide and a tour cart.  Our guide’s name was Maxx.

The Backlot – You Might Recognize Some of This

First we drove through and explored the Backlot – a series of outdoor sets that have been constructed over the years, and have been used in countless movies and TV shows. Many of these sets date to the 1930s and all are still in use today. As Maxx took us down one street after the other, we jumped from small town Midwest to downtown New York, from tree-lined residential streets to seedy back alleys.

And we didn’t just stay in the cart. We got out and walked up and down these empty streets. We were even allowed enter a few of the buildings. Some are just empty shells like the photo below….

While others are called “Practicals” and are used for their interiors as well. In the photo below, Maxx explains how the decor of the room is changed constantly depending on what’s needed for the production, and how the open ceilings are used for gear.

Maxx also explained how even the exteriors can be adjusted. The bricks aren’t bricks. They are made of styrene and can easily be replaced in en masse for a different look. All the buildings also lack exterior features like door handles and lights, as you can see in the picture below. These are added at the time of filming, based on each production’s needs.

As we walked from location to location, Maxx would point out the storied filming history of individual streets, storefronts, and buildings. Memorable scenes like the alley for Spiderman’s upside-side down kiss, the cafe in Casablanca, the street outside Annie’s orphanage, the last shot of the Seinfeld series, and many many more.

Once back in the cart after each set, a short video would then show us each set’s transformation from one movie to another over the decades – very cool!

The Front Lot and Stage 16

Next up on the Warner Bros Studio Tour was the Front Lot. This is its collection of 30 sound stages where the interior production of films and TV takes place. Inside these huge soundproof buildings, elaborate sets are built, specific to each production.

We stopped at Stage 16. At 65 feet tall, it’s the largest on the lot and one of the tallest in the world. It also has a 2 million gallon water tank under its floor, extending another 30 feet below ground, allowing films like The Perfect Storm and Poseidon to be filmed inside.

At the time of our tour, the soundstage wasn’t in use. So we were able to walk inside and take in its cavernous enormity.

Each soundstage has a plaque on the outside listing its production history. Take a close look and you can see plenty of classics on Stage 16’s list including Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park.

We also had the chance to drive directly through The Mill. This is the construction department where the interior sets are created.

We also drove past the large building that houses the property department. This is where all the furniture and fixtures required to dress a set are kept. We weren’t able to enter, but could see stacks of lamps and other fixtures through the windows. Maxx described the intricate cataloguing and ordering system that the Studio has set up as we passed.

After this, the guided portion of the tour ended, and Maxx dropped us off at a building called Stage 48.

Stage 48 – Friendstravaganza

Stage 48 is the first of two interactive experiences on the Warner Bros Studio Tour. And there was lots going on in this building. Most popular is the coffee shop set from the TV series Friends. I personally never watched much of Friends, but this seemed to be the highlight for a great percentage of tour participants. Here, fans can line up and get a photo on the couch. I had to act fast to get the shot below in between groups of giddy fans.

There is also a Friend’s-themed fully-functioning coffee shop inside the building. Plus, a large gift shop mostly dedicated to Friend’s paraphernalia. Important note to those who need to eat midday like I do – the coffee shop has what looked to be a decent food menu, too.

Stage 48 also features the living room set from The Big Bang Theory where fans can also pose for photos.

In addition to the sets from those two popular TV shows, Stage 48 also offers an immersive experience called Script to Screen. As we walked from room to room, we were learned about the many sequential steps involved in film and TV production. It was all very interesting, especially all the costume displays. And I finally know what a foley artist does (creates the every day sound effects that are added post-production).

To Couch or Not to Couch

It would be easy to spend several hours at Stage 48. But we breezed through pretty quick, spending about 30 minutes. When we were ready to leave, a tour cart was waiting outside, and we were taken to the final displays on the tour.

First though, while again passing through the Backlot, we were given the option to get off and have our picture taken on the couch and fountain from Friend’s opening sequence. Again, not big Friend’s fans, so we stayed on the cart and headed directly to The Archive, which is located in the main tour building.

The Archive – Where I Became Hufflepuff

First up – costumes from many of the DC Comics movies, all made by Warner Bros Studios, including Michael Keaton’s Batman and Christopher Reeves’s Superman,

Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman,

and one of a long line of Batmobiles used in the movie franchise – this is the Tim Burton version.

Next, was Harry Potter’s Wizarding World. Harry Potter was filmed at the Warner Bros Studio in England rather than this one, but it is still a big deal on the Hollywood Studio Tour.

Here, several Harry Potter sets and scenes were recreated for our photo-taking pleasure.

Plus, we had the opportunity to participate in a Sorting Ceremony. We may have not wanted to sit on the various Friend’s couches, but we couldn’t pass up the Sorting Ceremony! The hat was lowered on to our heads (kind of), and our House was chosen by a voice above and around us. Me – Hufflepuff! Mrs. TT – Slytherin!! I’ll have to watch out around her now….

Finally, we found ourselves in a room surrounded by various awards collected by the Studio over the years, including a few of their Oscars. This is the first time I’ve ever seen an actual Oscar. The one pictured here is My Fair Lady’s Best Picture Academy Award from 1964.

Final Thoughts

Our time on the Warner Bros Studio Tour was thoroughly enjoyable. We learned a lot about film and TV production, had much better studio access than I imagined, and we were impressed with the interactive displays. We don’t tend to linger at displays, so our tour only took about 2 hours. But I can certainly understand why the Warner Bros website states that it could take 3-4. If you love TV (or movies) as much as I do, then don’t hesitate to spend a few hours on the Warner Bros Studio Tour in Burbank. You can click here to purchase tickets on Viator

I enjoyed reading about your tour. Mrs Small Town has been so I’ve heard a lot of fun stories. I can’t wait to see it myself.

Thanks Tom! As I think back to many trips to LA over the years, it’s definitely a highlight. Not sure why I’ve never done it until now.

Really interesting article. I think it’s so fascinating that the outdoor sets don’t have doorknobs or light fixtures. It would be so neat to walk through those soundstages where some of my favorite films were made. I do think it’s funny that they have Harry Potter sets. It would be fun but odd knowing none of them were filmed there.

We really learned so many interesting facts like that about TV and film production. Never read any Harry Potter myself. Watched each movie with the kids, but they came out so far apart that I had a hard time remembering the full story line over all the subsequent years. Still though, couldn’t pass up getting Sorted

Looks like a fun tour! I am completely fascinated with the huge water stage – 30 ft underground?!?! Mind-blowing! The Harry Potter scenes are great!

And we walked right across it. Would have loved to see what it looked like underneath that floor.

It’s actually *Maxx

Thanks for letting me know. I’ll add the second x to her name 🙂

What a great tour to do and see all the famous sets. Something we would love to do. We took the driving tour around Universal Studios and that was fun but this looks so much better

That Batmobile isn’t from the dark knight series. It’s from the 2 Tim Burton Batman’s with Michael Keaton

Thanks for letting me know. I’ll change it. I’m clearly not a Batman expert 🙂

I loved your letter I found it really interesting id love to see it in person that and tmz tour bus tour. I’d love to see the friends set when I know I’m going to la I’m going to book a tour with wb thats for the information. Pat

Glad to know that you found it so helpful. Hope you get the chance to experience yourself!

I would love to do this tour! I love all of the Hollywood films and of course the shows too. It’s so cool to see the sets like this, it makes it more real!

That’s a place I would love to visit one day! I’m sure everyone from my family would enjoy it, and I would be the one of those giddy fans to rush to take a picture in Friend’s coffee shop :))

What an awesome tour! This is one thing I keep saying I’m going to do but never drive up to LA to go on it. You’ve motivated me to go this year! I’d love to see all the different sets and learn about productions. That’s neat that you can see everything that’s been filmed in each stage before entering. I had no idea there was such a huge water tank in one. Filming in that must be pretty cool to see.

I love the idea of doing this tour, it looks great. It’s great that they have the names of productions filmed in the soundstages listed outside. Definitely adding this to my list when I finally get back to LA.

I would love to take the Warner Bros Studio Tour. So cool to see the magic behind the scenes! Great pics and overview!

Exactly – the magic behind the scenes! Well put!

Cheers, Seinfeld & Breaking Bad are all series I loved too, especially the latter. It is amazing that the studios have been around for nearly 100 years, yes, and that the Backlot outdoor sets are still in use but lack door handles or lights…

The dimensions of Stage 16 are truly mindboggling wow..

Fascinating! I would definitely go out of my way to take this tour. I am a huge fan of Big Bang so the chance to sit in Sheldon’s “spot” would be hard to resist and My Fair Lady is one of my favourites. The tour looks interesting and informative as well as fun. I suppose my only worry might be that seeing the shell behind the facade might take away some of the magic? Probably not! The suspension of disbelief is alive and well 😊

It’s so interesting seeing how iconic films and TV shows were made. I really like that they’ve kept the historical aspects like Stage 16 and the costumes. Would love a go on the sorting hat too!

It’s hard to pass up a hat sorting!!

Ballet dancers run in a circle on stage as one is carried in the air.

Friday night, I went to see Los Angeles Ballet’s “ Memoryhouse ” by Melissa Barak at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica. The piece about the Holocaust was set to Max Richter’s score of the same name. Barak provided broad brushstrokes of the Holocaust through haunting vignettes of internal narratives and collective turmoil.

One of the highlights was the use of projections in the show. Dancers performed a majority of the work behind a scrim while images of windows, birds and rainfall were projected in front of the movement. The combined work of media designer Sebastian Peschiera , set designer BA Collective and lighting designer Nathan Scheuer immersed you into the memories played out on stage.

Barak’s choreography consists of memorable tableaus. One that stuck with me was when an ensemble of dancers ran across the stage. They ran in place and pulled their arms back sharply to their sides one at a time in unison. Barak took something ordinary and created a stunning portrait out of it. At the end of the section, a dancer fell to the ground while everyone else turned around to hush them with a single “shh.” The action referenced Jewish people hiding during the Holocaust to evade possible persecution and imprisonment. So much as a stumble could risk it all. Barak’s choreography broke traditional theater conventions; at one point, dancers were instructed to evade the spotlight and move in the darkness.

Many pieces ended with a single person on stage. After each section — each memory — one remained to tell the tale.

That night at the Broad Stage ushered in a new chapter for LAB as the company closed its season. The following one will be entirely under the reins of Barak. LAB’s repertoire typically focused on Balanchine works and classical masterpieces, but Barak opened the door to a contemporary future. It is an exciting moment for ballet in Los Angeles.
