Greece in October

Greece in October: Best Places to Visit in Autumn

Last Modified: March 26, 2024 //  by  Anda //   Leave a Comment

By virtue of its location – in southeastern Europe – Greece enjoys a milder climate than the rest of the continent. While in most parts of Europe the weather starts to get miserable in October, in Greece fall time offers the best of all worlds. Temperatures are still warm, prices are lower, and the herds of tourists are gone.

Greece in October

October marks the transition from summer to autumn, but many people consider it the ideal month for a vacation in Greece. But can you still swim and sunbathe in October? Keep reading to find out what to expect if you travel to Greece in the fall, as well as what are the best places to visit at this time of year.

Table of Contents

What Is the Weather Like in Greece in October?

Where to go in greece in october, aegean vs. ionian sea: which islands are warmer in october, rhodes island, the downside of traveling to greece in october, how to pack for greece in october.

Although it’s considered the shoulder season in Greece, the month of October feels more like the “Indian Summer , “ or “St. Martin’s Summer,” as they call it in Europe. It’s period of abnormally warm weather, with clear skies and cool nights. The sun is still shining all day and the sea is pleasantly warm for swimming.

Autumn is colder in the northern part of the country and in the mountains, but in most parts of Greece the first half of October can be really warm.

Boating in Greece in the fall

At the beginning of the month you can expect daily highs up to 82ºF (28ºC) and 10-11 hours of daylight per day. As the month progresses the temperatures will start falling and you’ll may see occasional showers. However, the average rainfall in October doesn’t exceed 5-6 days in Greece.

During the day-time the average temperature rarely falls below 20ºC (68ºF) in October, although mornings and nights are cooler (14ºC – 16ºC at). Even so, evenings are still warm enough for dining outside, but you may need a light jacket.

October is arguably the best month for visiting the top cultural sites in Greece. Besides good travel deals, the temperatures are pleasant for walking and you’ll have fewer visitors to compete with at the archeological sites and major museums. If you want to stay on Greece’s mainland, October may be a great month for taking a road trip in the Peloponnese .

taking a road trip in Greece in October

But autumn is also the best season for island hopping in Greece, when the crowds have dissipated but the beach life still continues into late October. Whatever your taste, you’ll find plenty of fantastic destinations to choose from at this time of year.

The Greek islands are beautiful year-round, but the temperature varies quite a bit between the seasons. Although the weather is still pleasantly warm in October, some islands will experience higher temperatures than others. So which islands are warm enough for swimming and sunbathing in October, the Aegean or the Ionian?

Greece - Zakynthos Island in October

As a general rule, the earlier in the month you travel the warmer weather you are likely to get. But there is also a distinction between the the Aegean and Ionian Sea islands , when it comes to their fall climate.

The Aegean islands are known for their dry year-round weather, but the average annual temperature of the water is lower in the Aegean than in the Ionian Sea. There are however a few exceptions, like the islands of Crete or Rhodes, which have an average sea temperature much higher than any of the ones in the Ionian Sea.

paddleboarding in the Ionian Sea

Another factor to consider when choosing between the Aegean and the Ionian Sea islands is the wind. Generally, the tender winds of the Ionian Sea in combination with the relatively low sea depths make these islands an ideal place for sailing. While the stronger winds in the Cyclades are suited for the more experienced sailors.

Best Islands in Greece to Visit in October

That being said, here are the best Greek islands to visit in October:

When compared to other islands in Greece, Crete gets the highest fall temperatures, which will last till the end of October. That’s mostly due to its geographical location in the South Aegean Sea, close to North Africa.

Fall brings fewer crowds and quieter beaches, while the sea is still warm for swimming and the air temperature is just perfect for walking and sightseeing. The average day-time temperature in October is 25ºC, while the evening average is 18ºC.

view of a beach Crete, Greece

In the second part of the month the temperature begins to decrease – after all, it’s autumn in Greece! You can expect some clouds and even a bit of rain, occasionally. But unless you are really unlucky, you should have mainly sunny days in Crete in October. That’s especially true for the southern part of the island.

Autumn landscape in Crete, Greece

Crete is a pretty large place – 300 km long – so depending on where you are you may see some differences in climate, but not significantly big. The island is full of archaeological sites, beautiful lagoons, caves and quaint villages that are a lot of fun to explore at this time of year.

Autumn is a great month in Rhodes as well. We visited the island on the first week of October and everything was still open, although the places seemed much quieter. We enjoyed 30ºC (86ºF) all week, but usually the temperature here ranges from 70—76°F (21—25°C) in October.

Mandraki harbour, Rhodes, Greece

In ancient times, Rhodes was famous for being the home of one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World – the Colossus of Rhodes. Sadly, no trace of the huge statue remains today.

Rhodes island, Greece

However, there is still a lot to see and do on this Greek island in October. Like visiting the city of Rhodes, the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, taking a boat tour around the island, or going on a wine tasting tour.

Although there is really no “bad” time to visit the Ionian Islands, the best season is still in October, when the weather is mostly warm and sunny, but not too hot. As opposed to the Cyclades which are dry and barren, the Ionian Sea Islands are covered in vegetation and still very green in October. And Zakynthos is no exception.

Zakynthos island

Zakynthos is one of Greece’s most popular destinations, a paradise for snorkeling, sailing and hiking. Covered with olive groves and vineyards, the island is surrounded by secluded beaches and fantastic caves. Zakynthos is the ideal place for renting a boat and sailing around.

Boating in Zakynthos

We visited the island in mid October, when the tourist season was winding down. This gave us a perfect opportunity to explore the rustic villages and enjoy the beaches without having too many people around.

Being the largest of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia never feels too crowded. Even so, in October the island becomes a paradise for those who love private escapes in Greece. Some of the beaches can be virtually empty, although the temperature stays in the high 70s (20ºC) till mid November.

The port of Fiskardo, Kefalonia

Some hotels and restaurants close in mid October, but even so you’ll still find plenty of lodging and enough traditional tavernas that stay open year round.

greece travel october

One of the main events that takes place in Kefalonia every year on October 20 is the Feast of St. Gerasimos, the island’s patron saint. The saint’s remains are paraded in a glided case throughout the streets of the island. After the parade, the locals party into the early hours of the morning with music, dancing, drinking, and eating.

Corfu is beautiful year-round, but we prefer it off-season when it’s more laid back and has so much quieter beaches. During October you can expect 11 hours of daylight with 6 hours of sunshine each day. The average day temperatures in Corfu is 24ºC.

Beach in Corfu

The sea temperature is one of the best things about traveling to Greece in late fall and Corfu is no exception. The water starts to get cold only at the beginning of November, so October is still a great month for swimming.

As far as rain, the first part of October is still dry but towards the end of the month you’ll begin to see more clouds and even some rain. Nonetheless, storms are short and usually clear quickly leaving behind sunny skies.

Corfu historic town

That being said, you should plan both beach days and sightseeing days and be ready to modify your itinerary as you go. You’ll have plenty of fun things to do in Corfu, no matter what the weather is. And although some places close in mid October, most resorts are quite active throughout November and even year round.

Other Destinations in Greece to Visit in October

If you are a beach lover but want to stay on Greece’s mainland, here are some places that make great beach destinations for October:

Although Athens is famous mainly for its sightseeing, there are many beautiful beaches to explore all along the Attica peninsula.

October average temperature in this area is 24ºC during the day and 14ºC at night. The weather is just perfect, whether you want to visit the archeological sites, tour some museums, or dine out at any of the tavernas, or visit the beaches.

Sunio Beach near Athens, Greece in October

And if you have more than just 3 days in Athens, you can head to Delphi to check out the sanctuary of the Greek god Apollo and his priestess, Pythia . Or you can visit some of the wineries in the Attica region, Ancient Corinth, or the Temple of Poseidon. Whatever your interests, thre are plenty of easy day trips to take from Athens .

Visiting Greece in October

Athens is also home to some exciting art and culture festivals in October, so you can plan your autumn trip to Greece around them.

The Monasteries of Meteora are one of the most astonishing religious sites in Greece, second in importance only to Mount Athos. Whether you visit Meteora for religious reasons or simply because you like to travel, the monasteries will leave a long lasting impression on your heart.

view of the Holy Monastery in Meteora

The utter immensity of Meteora’s towering rocks gives you a sense of grandeur that is hard to put into words. This mystical landscape has an atmosphere that feels almost surreal and gives you a sense of peace and tranquility.

Meteora is a year-round destination and can be beautiful at any time of year. Even in winter. But if you come in summer, expect to walk shoulder to shoulder (literally!) with hundreds of other tourists. The best time to visit Meteora is in spring (April-May) or fall (October to mid-November). After November the weather changes dramatically and you can get a lot of fog.

One of the most memorable places in Greece to visit in October is the citadel of Monemvasia . Hanging on the side of a solitary rock on a small island, the fortress is an absolute marvel!

October temperatures in Monemvasia range from 23ºC (73°F) to 19ºC (66°F), so this is one of the best fall destinations in Greece.

image depicting the Castle of Monemvasia, Greece

In Ancient Greece, the citadel of Monemvasia was probably home to thousands of inhabitants, but today only a handful of people reside here full time. Most of the old houses on the island are now boutique hotels or expensive weekend homes, making it an ideal choice for those who wish to stay within the castle citadel.

Outside of the castle of Monemvasia there is a hidden corner from which you can enjoy swimming in deep crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Water temperature in October is around 24ºC, which is just pleasant for swimming.

Located on the Argolic Gulf on the eastern side of the Peloponnese, Nafplio is an incredibly picturesque seaside town. It’s beautiful beaches, buzzing squares, and vibrant port make it an ideal fall destination in Greece.

seaside promenade in Nafplio

The small town is also home to two hilltop castles and an offshore island fort, which are very easy to explore when it’s not too hot outside. October temperature in this part of Greece is very pleasant during the day, measuring around 23.5°C (74.3°F). At night the temperature goes down to around 14.2°C (57.56°F), which is still very pleasant.

Although overall we prefer Greece in autumn or in the spring, there are some inconveniences for traveling to off season.

• Many hotels and restaurants will close from mid October to April, so you’ll have fewer lodging and eating options.

image depicting a restaurant that is closed for the season

• Ferries change their schedule in fall and some routes may not even be available. For instance, during high season (June – September) there are 95 scheduled ferry crossings per week between Kefalonia and Lefkada. While during low season (October – May) there are only 7 ferry crossing per week. This may be an inconvenience.

• Daylight hours are shorter, as the sun rises around 7:30 am and sets at 6:45 pm.

• Water temperatures are obviously lower in fall. For instance, around the Ionian Islands they may not exceed 74ºF (23ºC) in October. I still consider that temperature comfortable for swimming, but many people prefer the water warmer.

Packing for Greece is generally easy, as you won’t need any fancy clothing or special attire, like when you pack for Patagonia for instance. But if you travel to Greece in the fall, I recommend packing both summer and autumn clothes, as the weather can be a mixed bag at this time of year. So here are some items that shouldn’t be missing from your luggage:

Lightweight clothes to pack for Greece in October

Light weight clothes

Greece is just the right place for wearing cotton and linen clothes. I alway pack a couple of long-sleeve tee shirts, some tank tops, a skirt and a few summer dresses. For my husband I pack shorts, tee-shirts and some white slacks.

Even though temperatures will be in the upper 70s (24-25ºC) in October, I definitely recommend that you bring a raincoat if you travel to Greece in fall. The chance of rain is fairly high, so a lightweight raincoat is a good idea.

Swimsuits and a hat

Chances of having mostly sunny and warm days in October is pretty high in Greece. As average temperatures are above 20ºC, you’ll most likely spend a lot of time on the beach, so make sure you bring swimsuits and a hat.

Boating in Greece in the fall

Snorkeling gear

No matter where you are in Greece you’ll never be too far from the sea, so bringing your snorkel is a must. The crystal clear waters around the Greek island are just perfect for snorkeling!

Lightweight Jacket

Evenings are definitely cooler in October and many tavernas have only outside seating. So, if you like to dine outside or stroll around in the evenings, I strongly recommend bringing a long pair of pants and some warm clothes. Sometimes it gets pretty chilly after the sun goes down.

Light jacket you can wear in Greece in October

Comfortable shoes

If you travel to Greece in autumn you’ll most likely do a lot of walking, so you should bring some comfortable shoes. Also, you should be prepared for pebble beaches. Besides sandals, I also carry of pair of choral shoes which come in very handy if I need to hike a short dirt trail (to/from the beach).

4. Enjoy a 3-Day Trip to Delphi and Meteora

Greece is a mountainous country so some sites are much more difficult to get to them than others especially if you are visiting during the heat of the Greek summer. Two great examples are the steep uphills of the Delphi and the endless steps to get to some of the Meteora Monasteries .

Delphi and Meteora are best visited when the weather is much cooler between October and April and on a 3-day trip, spending a night in Delphi and one night in Meteora. A draft of the itinerary can be:

6. Hike in Pelion Mountain

greece travel october

Greece is made for walking, so the answer is almost everywhere in the country. There is a mountain or a hill or a nearby forest or a river or a lake to hike, climb, or cross, wherever you go in Greece.

My favorite place to hike in Greece is Pelion Mountain located in mid-eastern Greece.

Zagora village in Pelion Mt

Imagine a deeply forested peninsula with 28 traditional, beautiful villages full of old mansions and monuments, trees laden with pears, apples, chestnuts, planes, streams, and centuries-old bridges.

The most famous Pelion villages are:

  • Damouchari (Mamma Mia’s Film Location) and

Greece in October, Agioi Saranta beach in Pelion Mount

As if that was not enough, the peninsula is surrounded by endless golden sandy beaches, some of the best in Greece. In autumn the forest leaves take red and orange hues creating magnificent landscapes that you would just love to hike!

Join the October Pelion Festivals

2. On The last days of October, usually between the 26-28 of the month, in a small village close to Tsagkarada, in Xourichti, the “delicious” Chestnut Festival is organized by the local authorities.

There is no entrance fee and the visitors can taste boiled and baked local chestnuts (Pelion is huge in chestnut production), food cooked with chestnuts, dance with the locals, and enjoy an authentic local Greek feast (the poster says that free wine is included as well!).

The last and very important reason to visit Greece in October? Prices and rates are low and the local businesses devote a lot of quality time to offering their guests the best experience in their place.

So that when you go back home, Greece will stay in your heart forever.

If you can’t stand the crazy hot temperatures of Greek summers (30-45 C in July and August) then October is your ideal month to explore Greece. Summer meltemia (Aegean Sea north winds) have stopped blowing everyone’s hair and it is now much more enjoyable to sail in Greece.

There might be some rain for 4-5 days of the month. Greek nature and forests are beautiful with red and orange colors making the hikes in the hills one of the best things to do in Greece in October.

The 8 Best Greek Islands in October

Why would you travel to Greece in October? Well, traveling to Greece in the summer is not necessarily a good idea. Temperatures easily move beyond 40°C, there are wildfires, and summer is the main season for domestic travel meaning prices increase significantly.

If you’re from another European country or North America chances are you’ll probably enjoy the weather in Greece a lot more in the off-season, plus it’s a lot cheaper to travel during that time. Keep in mind that one of Greece’s major holidays falls on October 28th so you can even get a glimpse of the local celebrations if you visit late in October. Are you convinced yet to visit Greece in October? What are the best Greek islands in October, you ask? I’ve got you covered.

To help you pick the best Greek islands to visit in October I put together a list of the warmest Greek islands in October and those that don’t die down completely after September. If you’re specifically looking for a romantic trip I have a post on the best Greek islands for couples you should check out.

In order to get the best rates on everything make sure you compare flights on flight comparison websites like aviasales , Expedia , or Omio , or book with Kiwi.com:

For the best hotel deals, you can choose from a variety of search websites such as agoda , trivago , Tripadvisor , Booking.com , Expedia , loveholidays , and Trip.com .

Please also don’t forget the importance of travel insurance. In today’s day and age so much can happen between the moment you booked your flight and the actual trip date two months later. Insubuy is an insurance company with many different deals depending on your personal needs.

As some of the islands can be less than convenient to navigate on public transport to make the most of your trip you may have to rent a car or motorbike .

Finally, if you’re looking for the best places to book activities and tours check out viator , Tripadvisor , and Expedia . But now let’s get straight into my suggestions for Greek islands to visit in October.

What’s the Hottest Greek Island in October?

Is Greece hot in October? Well, October in Greece is generally a lot warmer than in the countries that are further north. Greece is one of the countries with hot weather in October if you’re limited to vacationing in Europe. That doesn’t mean it’s the perfect weather for heading to the beach, but it’s not bad either. While the temperature in Greece in October will be warm enough for many northerners to not wear a jacket, it also starts to get rainy. But I still think there are some lovely Greek islands to visit in October.

Naturally, you’ll want to go as far south as possible if you’re looking for really warm weather in Greece in October. In terms of the hottest Greek island, the two most obvious choices are Crete and Rhodes, but the Greek weather is generally quite mild. Can you swim in Greece in October? This all depends on the temperatures you are used to, but fall is definitely a better choice than early spring. After the long and hot summer, the sea is still quite warm.

So if you’re looking for a beach vacation visiting Greece in October is a better idea than in April for example. That’s not to say islands are the best places to visit in Greece in October. The mainland has fantastic hiking opportunities for example.

small boat in the clear blue water off crete greece

As the southernmost Greek island, Crete is the hottest Greek island in October which makes it a great choice if you’re thinking about traveling to a Greek island at this time of the year. The average temperature in Crete in October is still about 20°C. Bring a light jacket for the evenings, but during the day you can still comfortably wear t-shirts. The water, particularly on the southern coast, will still be warm enough for a swim as it’s been warmed up all summer.

Crete is the largest Greek island with a population of more than 630,000 people, so you don’t have to worry about it being boring or empty in October. Although many of the tourists will have left the students will have returned to the island’s three universities which explains why Crete is one of the best Greek party islands. This means that there are still plenty of entertainment options in Crete.

Be aware however that typical tourist centers will be less and less active by the end of the month. So while a trip to Crete in October is entirely possible you should make sure to avoid the tourist areas and focus on the regions where locals live.

October is the perfect time to do some sightseeing on this enormous island. The more time you have the more easily you will be able to fit everything in. From ancient sites to hiking and a few stops at the various beaches, there is plenty to do, for example, if you opt to go on a Crete road trip. Another great way to see more of the island is this half-day quad safari which lasts 3.5 hours. Ideally, you’d have three weeks to visit Greece so you don’t have to skip too many things. But you can always stay for a shorter amount of time and then go back again in the future.

Whether it’s sunny or perhaps a bit rainy, Crete has a lot to offer. There are various archaeological sites from the Minoan civilization, such as Knossos. If you’re interested in the Greek Orthodox religion you can also visit several churches and monasteries on the island. As a history lover, you will love strolling through the streets of the big cities like Chania and Heraklion and seeing buildings left behind by many different civilizations, such as the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. Rainy days will be best for museums

Some of the most famous beaches are Balos and Chryssi Island, but even if you’re not a beach person you will be fascinated by the views of the Cretan landscapes. This cruise to Gramvousa and Balos from Chania is a fantastic way to explore some of the beaches that are only accessible by boat. If you want something more adventurous this boat trip in Chania includes activities like snorkeling and stand-up paddling.

To get more up-close drive through the inner part of the islands to see grapes and olives being harvested in traditional villages. Be careful if you’re vegan; Crete is very difficult to navigate as a vegan, so make sure to check out my vegan Greece guide before your trip.

Because of the island’s size, its two major airports have several direct connections with many European cities making getting to the island a pretty straightforward affair. No wonder Crete is generally considered the best Greek island in October.

Where to Stay in Crete

Anastasia Hotel Stalis – This hotel is surrounded by green landscapes, and you can even rent bikes to explore the area.

Nana Princess Suites, Villas & Spa – The hotel has a private beach as well as two outdoor pools.

Blue Dream Hotel – The hotel is not far from the popular town of Rethymno and very close to a beach.

Socrates Hotel Malia Beach – Malia is going to be a lot less busy in October so you can enjoy the hotel as a place to relax instead of heading to the bars.

Another contender for the title of the warmest Greek island in October is Rhodes. As a large island with lots of regular inhabitants, Rhodes doesn’t really die down after the summer though it will be less busy, of course. Like on Crete, you should focus on the local life, predominantly in the capital of the island, and avoid those areas that only cater to tourists, as these will start to close in October.

The capital of Rhodes has plenty of sightseeing opportunities and is a great destination for history lovers. But don’t worry, you will probably still be able to go for a swim in October because the water will be warm enough. Rhodes is home to many beautiful beaches that offer all kinds of water sports, but by late October you will find fewer such opportunities. As an alternative to the beaches, you can enjoy nature by hiking more inland.

You’re best off staying in the capital although it’s all the way in the north of the island. Many of the sights are located there, and if you rent a car you can visit the rest of the island on your own terms. If you want to visit the village of Lindos you can book this high-speed boat from Rhodes to Lindos .

Rhodes is also located close to the island of Symi so if you have enough time to visit another island on your trip book this boat trip to Symi .

The fortress in the capital of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage site so you can’t skip this during your visit, but there are several castles and ancient ruins on the rest of the island that you will enjoy if you’re a history buff. You can also visit churches and monasteries on Rhodes. This private tour of the Palace of the Grand Master includes the entrance fee which a lot of tours actually leave out even though they’re more expensive.

Rhodes has some of the best beach weather in October during the day. The temperature in Rhodes in October can reach up to 24°C. You should pack a sweater for the evenings as temperatures drop quickly after the sun sets, but it won’t be cold enough for you to need a warm jacket.

Like Crete, Rhodes has its own international airport so you might be lucky enough to get a direct flight from your home which will save you plenty of time.

Where to Stay in Rhodes

Spirit of the Knights Boutique – This suite is located in the Old Town making you feel right at home on the island.

Lia Matina Studios – If you don’t want to stay in the capital these apartments near Lindos are a fantastic choice.

Cactus Hotel – The hotel is close to the beach as well as the main sites in Rhodes Town.

George & Alexandra’s Apartments – For a traditional stone-built apartment in the Old Town of Rhodes stay here!

More of the Best Greek Islands in October

Aside from the hottest places in Greece, there are a few other islands to consider. There’s more to do on the Greek islands than going to the beach. You can still enjoy a warmer climate than at home and enjoy some sightseeing activities with fewer fellow tourists. Or you can take advantage of the mild temperatures and go hiking which wouldn’t be advisable in the summer.

Considered one of the most beautiful Greek islands, Santorini gets extremely crowded and expensive in the summer. But once the tourist crowds lessen you can see the island in its true beauty and enjoy the mindblowing vistas it offers. And since Santorini isn’t really a typical beach destination you won’t be disappointed by the milder temperatures.

One of the best things about traveling to Santorini in the shoulder season is that flights can be extremely cheap. Whether you’re flying in directly from abroad (Santorini has many direct connections with European cities) or going to Athens first, you will be able to find some pretty good deals.

greece travel october

In the evening you’ll need more than a t-shirt, but it will still be a lot warmer than in much of Europe and North America. Even if it gets a bit rainy there’s still stuff to see and do in Santorini so you won’t have to worry about getting bored. There are museums like the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, the Archaeological Museum, and even a Tomato Industrial Museum! If you’re interested in finding out more about why some people believe Santorini is the site of the mythical island of Atlantis book this skip-the-line ticket to the Lost Atlantis Experience .

Hiking the caldera from Fira to Oia in October will be a much less exhausting experience than in the heat of summer. And if you want to see the volcanic islands it’s much more relaxed to go on a tour in October. Although the towns of Fira and Oia are the most famous parts of Santorini it’s well worth exploring the rural villages as well. Many tourists focus only on the sunsets and completely ignore the intriguing caves, the landscapes, the small churches, and the local life.

This private Santorini panorama tour allows you to see all the best parts of Santorini in six hours so you can then decide which ones are worth heading back to on your own. To see Santorini from a different angle you should consider joining this volcanic islands cruise .

For pretty photo opportunities other than the ones most commonly seen on Instagram, head to the Akrotiri Lighthouse which is also a great spot for watching the sunset. Akrotiri is also home to an ancient settlement where you can see the effects of the volcanic eruption.

Where to Stay in Santorini

Aenaon Villas – If you want to experience gorgeous Imerovigli without the crowds this is the time to book a stay at one of these stunning villas.

Anastasis Apartments & Spa – Another charming place to stay in beautiful Imerovigli but without the masses that are here in the summer.

Santellini Hotel – Even though Santorini is not a typical beach destination you may prefer to stay close to one of them.

Stelios Place at Perissa Beach – Another option for those who prefer to spend some time at the beach as well.

If you really want to visit Mykonos but are not into clubbing then October might be the best month for you to head to this Cycladic island. After the party crowds leave you can appreciate the island’s true beauty and experience its calmer side. So although Mykonos tops the list of the best Greek islands to party, there is more to the island than that.

Wondering what to do in Mykonos in October? The stunning beaches on the island will be less crowded in October, and even though the water might not be as warm as in the summer it will still be warm enough for a swim for most people coming from colder climates. You can even do some watersports activities in October.

You will also be able to take advantage of all the fantastic photo opportunities without the crowds. Want a photo of a gorgeous Cycladic alley? See the famous windmills without having to fight for the best viewpoint? Now is the time to visit Mykonos for the best travel photos. For an excellent overview of the island book this Mykonos island tour with a professional tour guide.

Walking down from the windmills you will reach another famous place on the island. Little Venice is one of the most picturesque parts of Mykonos, but in the high season, you might not be able to appreciate its romantic sunsets the way you will in October. This is the number one spot to sit at a bar and enjoy the scenery.

tables and chairs outside a taverna in Mykonos, Greece

Should the weather not be that great one day you can head to the Folklore Museum or the Agricultural Museum to learn a bit more about life on the island from the lens of the local population. If you want to see Delos, the uninhabited UNESCO World Heritage site, October is an excellent month because the day trips to the island won’t be as packed with tourists.

To make the most of your trip to Mykonos rent a car for the most flexible form of transportation that allows you to explore the island beyond the typical Instagram guides. Or you can book this Mykonos Wild Experience Tour which takes you to several lesser-known places on the island during a six-hour drive.

Most of the nightlife opportunities are now geared towards the locals allowing for a much more interesting experience. And even in October, Mykonos remains one of the best Greek islands for nightlife.

As it can get somewhat chilly after the sun sets I’d suggest bringing a light jacket.

Where to Stay in Mykonos

Luna Suites – A luxurious suite with a sea view that is located outside of the town.

Mykonos Ornos Turquoise Home – This cute apartment isn’t far from the beach but also a great base to explore more of the island.

Myconian Ambassador Hotel Relais & Chateaux – This luxury hotel has a spa and is extremely close to the beach.

Myconian Korali Relais and Chateaux – Located in the capital, this hotel is a great place to base yourself in to visit the surroundings.

Naxos is one of the larger Greek islands, and, as such, still offers moderate nightlife opportunities after the season for the local population. If you’re from a colder climate you will still enjoy the weather and might even be ready for a swim. You should also consider Naxos for its hiking options because who wants to go hiking when it’s 40 °C? October is the perfect month for a more active trip where you can explore the landscape which even includes two mountains.

But Naxos is also a great destination for sightseeing which, again, is something that is not quite as much fun in the heat of the summer. Whether it’s the Portara or the Kastro you will enjoy them more now that the temperatures are a lot more bearable. On this half-day private tour of Naxos , you get to see much of the beautiful island, including the Temple of Demeter.

Naxos is one of the best Greek islands for beaches, and surfing and diving are activities you can still enjoy in October. If the weather is less than enjoyable one day you can visit one of the pretty churches or museums, for example, the Olive Museum!

October is a fantastic month to drive around the island and visit some of the places that most tourists are not even aware of. There are various cute little villages surrounded by lemon and olive groves that don’t make it onto most travel blogs but are well worth a visit. Apiranthos is the most popular village and has several museums where you can learn more about the history and traditions of Naxos.

greece travel october

Naxos is also one of the best Greek islands for families so if you’re traveling with young children make your way to Naxos, and compared to other Cycladic islands, Naxos belongs to the cheap Greek islands and best Greek islands for October.

Where to Stay in Naxos

Windmill Naxos – This budget hotel is located in the most popular part of Naxos from where you can visit many of the important sights.

Hotel Grotta – A cozy hotel in the capital with easy access to many of the island’s attractions.

Naxos Island Escape – If you’re not going to Naxos because it’s one of the cheapest Greek islands then this elegant accommodation option designed in a traditional Cycladic style is for you.

Zeus Hotel – Another perfectly located hotel for people who want to explore Naxos on a budget.

Corfu is one of my favorite Greek islands and definitely has enough to offer outside of the summer season. With its own university, Corfu Town actually becomes even livelier once the students return and is one of the best Greek islands for partying. And while it won’t be as warm as Crete you’ll probably still enjoy a swim if you’re coming from a colder country. There are various stunning beaches such as Halikounas, Issos, and Prasoudi which aren’t even overly packed in the summer.

Corfu Town has several sights to visit so you definitely won’t get bored, and even the rest of the island will still be exciting with plenty of hiking options in the milder weather. Check out my post on things to do in Corfu if you’re looking for some inspiration. Although my post focuses mainly on things to do in Corfu Town, there are several other things you can do such as hiking Mount Pantokrator. Though you’re probably best off basing yourself in Corfu Town and exploring the rest of the island from there.

Even summer evenings can get quite chilly on windy Corfu, so by October, you should definitely bring a light jacket for the evenings so you won’t feel cold strolling through the lovely capital. If you join this ghost stories and legends tour you might still feel chills, however.

Corfu is the perfect island to relax a little and simply take in its beauty or cuisine. And when it comes to food there’s obviously no wrong time to visit any place. Do check out my post on where to eat vegan in Corfu if you’re not sure about your options as a vegan.

Where to Stay in Corfu

greece travel october

Eros Hotel – Located in the beach town of Benitses, this is a great hotel for exploring the nearby capital.

Valentino Corfu – Located in Ipsos, this place has a pool and a jacuzzi perfect for relaxing.

Ikos Dassia – This 5-star resort is located right on the beach perfect for visiting Corfu in October.

MarBella Nido Suite Hotel and Villas – This 5-star accommodation option is adults-only if you want to relax without the noise of children.

As the largest of the Ionian islands, Kefalonia definitely deserves a spot on this list. The weather in Kefalonia in October is less hot than in islands like Crete or Rhodes. However, the sea might still be warm enough for you to swim in if you live in a colder climate. And while Kefalonia is not the hottest island in Greece, October is a great time to explore the local life and see how people live without tourists.

Kefalonia is home to many picturesque villages, one of them being Palaia Vlachata, a village that was abandoned after an earthquake in 1953 and has a creepy vibe. As in much of Greece, you can visit several churches and monasteries in Kefalonia as well.

There are also a few archaeological sites, such as a Roman mansion and a castle, though many other sites have been damaged in earthquakes.

For something a little more adventurous you can check out the two impressive caves Drogorati and Melissani, and Kefalonia is definitely one of the best Greek islands to explore.

Where to Stay in Kefalonia

Kalypso Studios and Apartments – Located in a fishing village near the port, these studios and apartments offer excellent views for a relaxing vacation.

Kappatos Apartments Kefalonia – If you want to relax in the tourist resort Argostoli without the huge number of other visitors this is the perfect accommodation option for you in October.

Dionisos Suites – These beautiful accommodations offer a pool and have received raving reviews from couples for the relaxed atmosphere.

Zest @ Xi Beach – This aparthotel is not only located at the beach but also has two outdoor pools.

greece travel october

Syros undoubtedly has one of the most picturesque capitals of the Cycladic islands, and if you really want to appreciate the architecture and wander through the alleys October is a much better month to visit than the hot and busy summer months.

The University of the Aegean has a campus in Ermoupoli so Syros is another one of those islands that has an active nightlife long after the tourists disappear. Ermoupoli is also home to lovely mansions and other examples of wonderful architecture, such as the Town Hall and the Apollo Theater. For more information about the island’s history, visit the old town with its magnificent churches and check out the Industrial Museum.

But you don’t have to stay in Ermoupoli to enjoy Syros. There are a number of picturesque villages where you can marvel at the beautiful surrounding landscapes, such as pine groves, but also more neoclassical architecture.

If you’re looking for something a little more off-the-beaten-track compared to the other choices Syros is the best Greek island for October.

Where to Stay in Syros

Sarris Planet – If you want to stay at your own studio with the traditional white and blue colors this is the place for you.

5 Hermoupolis Concept Sites – The beautifully designed rooms of this hotel in Ermoupoli are the perfect place to relax.

Hotel Ploes – If you want to stay in a neoclassical mansion this stylish hotel is the best thing you can get in Ermoupoli.

Manossyros – Only a few steps away from the beach this modern place offers terraces and balconies with beach views.

October is an interesting month for Greece. Depending on where you want to go and the type of activities you have planned it could be a great choice or not so much! In general, it is still a warm and pleasant month with very few days of rain and less crowds in all touristy areas. However, it can also be a very unpredictable month so if you are set on a beach holiday then October is not the ideal month for your travel.

What do you need to pack for Greece in October?

When packing for a trip in October aim for half summer and half autumn clothes. In the past few years, the first weeks of October have been hot enough for swimming and we have planned trips and enjoyed beach days in Mykonos, Santorini, Crete and other summer destinations around the country. However, northern Greece and high altitude mainland destinations can also feel cloudy and windy, making a light jacket necessary.

What kind of traveller enjoys Greece in October?

If you are travelling as a family and would prefer quieter days and less sunbathing then October is a good option. This will particularly suit families with very young kids that don’t have to be in school or that live outside of the norhthern hemisphere when school usually begins. The temperature is often considered “chilly” by Greeks and other southern Europeans with an average of about 20 degrees Celcius. You may also find that locals, having just endured 40 degree weather all through summer, will reach for their cardigans as soon as temperatures drops a bit. However, those that are used to colder climates may find that 20 degrees is still perfectly fine for a summer holiday.

The water temperature in Greece in October ranges between 20 and 22 degrees depending on whether you are in the north like Halkidiki, or down south in Crete. That may sound incredibly good to you, especially if you are from somewhere like New Zealand where midsummer water temperatures (which is Dec-Feb by the way) are 22 at best!

In comparison, the hottest summer months in Greece can heat the waters up to a tropical 28!

If you are not a fan of crowds, you may also put October on the top of the list. You will be able to visit popular destinations, like Mykonos and Santorini, without fighting for space and find locals less stressed and more likely to sit down with you for a discussion or a refreshing beverage!

Fans of hiking, cycling, walking or just being outside in general will love October for its mellow temperatures. You can explore, exercise, hike all the castles you can find and discover ruins and monuments around the cities on foot, without melting from the heat or needing to re-apply sunscreen (and deodorant) continuously.

Lastly, if you are after the most affordable holiday options and would prefer to save your money for more cultural activities and excursions, October will be a more wallet-friendly month. The high season is by then officially over so accomodation will be greatly reduced and you can also find cheaper transport options between islands (even though a lot of the routes are cut down starting in October, so it pays to double-check).

Where to travel in Greece in October?

Thessaloniki.

By now you realize that the best destination is the one that covers what you seek! There is no reason why October cannot be enjoyed in Mykonos, Santorini, Athens, Nafplio and of course the warmest option of the lot, Crete island.

However, we really want to emphasize Thessaloniki for October because it offers unique experiences that you won’t get if you come in other months.

Thessaloniki is often referred to as the co-capital of Greece, which might seem like a weird but it makes sense if you know how much of a beloved destination it is.

It is also the second largest city, with a vibrant nightlife scene, the most Byzantine monuments you can find in the country as well as the world, and a popular choice for university students. It is also only a few hours away from stunning beaches that can be found on the Halkidiki peninsula. And yet, it is relatively unknown outside of Greece and criminally underrated.

As a summer destination, Thessaloniki welcomes international visitors from the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Russia with options for flying or driving for some of the closest neighbours. While a mainland destination locals love to say their beaches are some of the best in the country and in terms of culture and food, you are sure to be spoiled for choice.

Events and Festivals in October

Thessaloniki is an ideal destination for October for many reasons but partly because of how many festivals and events take place here in this month.

National Oxi Day – This is one of the biggest national holidays in Greece and while you can enjoy it from every location, Thessaloniki really puts on a great show. “Ochi” means “no”, and that is how this National Day of Independence on the 28th of October has come to be remembered. In 1940, the at the time prime minister Ioannis Metaxas, refused the request of the Italian Axis powers under Benito Mussolini to pass through Greece. According to some accounts he responded with one word, “no”. While there is also an alternate view that he uttered the phrase “this means war” in French. Regardless, Greeks remember the bravery of the soldiers who went up against the Nazi powers of World War II with huge military and civilian parades and countless people line the streets to witness the event. The rest of the day is spent in celebration.

Demetrius of Thessaloniki – If you have Greek friends or are just very well informed, you might know that Greeks celebrate name days rather than birthdays (or did nevertheless before the western custom of birthdays became popular). Name days are celebrations on a saint’s feast day. Almost every person in Greece has a name day because most Greeks are baptized into the Orthodox church and thus carry a Christian name. A very common name in Greece and other Orthodox countries, Saint Dimitrius’s feast day is a big celebration around Greece. Thessaloniki has a double celebration, however, since Saint Dimitrius is also the paitron saint of the city. Don’t miss visiting the beautiful and majestic church in the center of the city that is part of the UNESCO World Heritages Sites and dates back to the 5th century.

Dimitria Festival – Familiar name? This is a month long festival that often takes place around September to December but is mostly concentrated around October. An annual festival, it has become one of the most important cultural traditions of Thessaloniki for more than 50 years. The municipality of Thessaloniki organizes countless events, exhibitions, dances and cultural events for young and old.

Chania Film Festival – A festival that has been a recent addition to the island of Crete, is the Chania Film Festival, which takes place annualy around the last week of October and lasts until the first week of November. More than 150 screenings for people of all ages, from documentaries to fiction and animated movies. Even if you are not there during the festival dates, the CFF organizes educational nights and screenings throughout the year, so it pays to check their website for relevant dates.

Navarino Challenge – An award-winning sports and tourism challenge organized by Costa Navarino in the Peloponnese region in southern Greece. With three running routes (21.1km – 10km and 5.4km) and the stunning backdrop of the Ionian Sea, this is a running event people from all over the world seek to experience.

International Thessaloniki Night Half Marathon – An always eagerly awaited event for the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, the International Thessaloniki Night Half Marathon starts at 19:00 PM in the centre of the city and circles around some of the most famous landmarks including the White Tower of Thessaloniki and follows the waterfront avenues before making a loop. The city is a walking museum packed with UNESCO World Heritage monuments, interesting neighbourhoods and trendy bars.

Greece in October: Average Weather Temperatures

In summary, October is a lovely in between month that offers plenty of warm days with a visible drop in the temperature as it draws closer to November. For travellers that are not after strictly a beach holiday, it can be an ideal month to explore the Greek islands and mainland and for fitness fans, you can hike, cycle and climb to your heart’s delight.

Visiting Greece in October

October is an interesting month to be in Greece. The first two weeks of October may be considered the tail end of the tourist season. Most charter firms scale back their operations by the mid to end of October and resorts that are still open are relaxed and not at all crowded. Athens still gets a fair amount of tourists, although nothing like the summer months. October is usually a great time to see Athens’ outdoor sites when the weather is pleasantly warm and the museums are much nicer with the crowds gone. October is when the locals go to see the sites, this should tell you something.

Greek Weather in October

The weather in October can vary considerably depending on where you are in Greece and if you are lucky or not. Rainy days are more common in the north and the west, but every town in Greece is guaranteed to see at least some rain. Athens and Thessaloniki average around 8 rainy days in October. Crete and the Cycladic islands have the least rain and are generally quite pleasant. If you are exploring the mountains in the center or the north of the country you might see more.

Temperatures in October

Daytime temperatures in October are usually still very pleasant. As I write this on the 5th of October Athens was sunny with a top temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The rest of the week is expected to continue much the same with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s and mainly sunny. Thessaloniki is looking much the same with average temperatures 2-3 degrees cooler than in Athens. Temperatures at the end of the month are usually lower, but good sunny weather can also carry on into November with only occasional days of rain and cooler temperatures.

Can I swim in Greece in October? Yes you can! As long as you don’t mind a bit of a shock when you first get in, the seas still have some warmth in them. Don’t feel intimidated if you are the only one actually stripping off at the beach, a quick swim is just the way to tighten that skin and freshen up.

Nights can be chilly, but it is still the common to sit outside for a drink, although eating might be done inside once the sun goes down. The further south you go the warmer the nights are, but you will always need a sweater and light jacket to keep warm no matter where you are in Greece. In the mountains the nights are usually still colder, although most of you planning on hitting the mountains probably already know that.

October Festivals

The main public event in October is Oxi (No) Day, the 28th of October , which commemorates the day that Ioannis Metaxa said ‘no’ to an Italian demand to march unopposed into Greece in 1940. His response triggered Greece’s entry into World War II on the Allied side and Greece’s fierce resistance against first Italy and then a Nazi occupation is rightly a source of national pride.

Main towns have parades on Oxi Day which can be quite a lot of fun. School kids get very excited about the Oxi day parades when they get to march around in front of their parents and everyone else. Military parades also occur in the larger cities. The day is considered a public holiday and all state and most private offices are closed. In tourist areas shops and restaurants might shut for half a day so their owners can go watch their kids march, but most have reopened by the late afternoon.

Looking for the hottest Greek islands in October? Here is some information on Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, and a few more islands in Greece!

greece travel october

Best Greek islands to visit in October

October is a good month to visit Greek islands such as Rhodes, Crete, Tinos, Hydra and Symi. As it’s the beginning of the shoulder season in Greece, you will avoid the scorching summer temperatures and tourist crowds.

Hottest Greek islands in October - Santorini

Generally speaking, the weather is still quite good in October. It’s a great time of year to go sightseeing and enjoy outdoors activities on the islands of Greece.

Greek island weather in October

So, does Greece still have beach weather in October?

This depends on which island you are going to! As a general rule, the earlier in October you travel, and the more south you go, the better weather you are likely to get.

On many Greek islands, the weather is still very pleasant in October. The average temperature during the day ranges from 20 to 25 C (68 – 77 F), and drops by a few degrees in the evening. Sea temperatures are also quite comfortable.

And although you might get a few rainy days, you will typically get many hours of sunshine. With that said, it’s better to travel early in the month, to maximize your chances for warm weather.

Here are some of the best Greek islands to visit in October.

1. Crete – Best for nature, ancient sites and food

Crete is the largest island in Greece, and it has something for everyone. With its interesting history, stunning beaches, diverse landscapes, and fantastic food, it’s no wonder that Crete is such a popular destination.

Knossos palace Crete

Crete is located south of mainland Greece. It is split into four regions, each of which has a capital town. From west to east, the main towns are called Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos.

Visitors often base themselves at either Chania or Heraklion, and take several day trips to beaches and other points of interest. If you are mostly after a beach holiday, it’s best to head to one of the towns on the south coast.

Things to do in Crete

You would need several months to explore all of Crete properly! Some of the best things to do in Crete if you are visiting for the first time, include the following:

  • Explore the picturesque old towns of Chania and Rethymno
  • Take a day trip from Chania to the famous beaches of Elafonisi and Falasarna
  • Visit the Mycenaean Palace of Knossos , one of the top archaeological sites in Greece
  • Spend a few hours in the wonderful archaeological museums in Heraklion and Chania
  • Hike the incredible Samaria Gorge
  • Visit the historical site of Spinalonga
  • Taste the delicious Cretan food!

How to get to Crete in October

If you are planning to visit Crete in October, you will find plenty of flights from big cities in Europe to either Heraklion or Chania airports.

Otherwise, you can take a short domestic flight from the Athens International Airport, or a ferry from Piraeus port.

2. Rhodes – Best for medieval architecture and high sea temperature

Another fantastic Greek island to visit in October is Rhodes, the biggest of the Dodecanese islands. This island group is located southeast of mainland Greece, a short distance from the Turkish coast.

The Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Greece

Due to its southern location, Rhodes enjoys some of the highest sea temperatures in Greece. In fact, many locals swim year-round! Rhodes has an abundance of beautiful beaches , and is therefore an ideal destination for some beach time.

Overall, October is a fantastic month to visit Rhodes, as you will avoid the summer crowds, and benefit from milder temperatures.

Things to do in Rhodes

There’s a lot to see and do in Rhodes! Here are some of the island’s highlights:

  • Rhodes Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its fantastic medieval architecture and pretty cobbled streets
  • The Palace of the Grand Master, right in the middle of the medieval old town
  • The ancient site of Lindos , on the island’s east coast
  • This kayaking activity that we absolutely loved!

How to get to Rhodes in October

The easiest way to get to Rhodes in October is by direct flight from several European cities. Unlike the off-season, there are several daily connections – though not as many as in the summer months. Read more here:

3. Symi – Best for its picturesque port town

Symi is a small island in the Dodecanese, close to Rhodes. It’s one of the most picturesque of Greece’s islands. Its lovely port town sprawls all the way up to the top of a hill, and the architecture is truly amazing.

Symi is one of the hottest Greek islands in October

One of the highlights of Symi is the 18th-century Monastery of Archangel Michael, or Panormitis monastery. Many people come here on a pilgrimage, and visitors can even stay overnight.

As for the beaches? Symi might be small, but it has some amazing little beaches. Some of them are only accessible on a boat trip – or on a kayak !

Read more here: Best things to do in Symi Greece

How to get to Symi in October

Symi doesn’t have an airport, so the only way to travel here is by sea. The closest island with an airport is Rhodes.

If you are planning to spend a few days here, you can check ferry schedules from Rhodes . There are typically a few ferries on a daily basis.

Alternatively, you can take an organized day trip from Rhodes , where you will see Symi’s top attractions.

4. Nisyros – Best for wild, rugged landscapes

Nisyros, which is also in the Dodecanese, is another lovely Greek island to visit in October. This wild, rugged island mostly remains off-the-beaten-track, and is one of my top favourites!

The biggest attraction in Nisyros is its impressive volcano, located right in the middle of the island. The landscape is out of this world!

Visit Nisyros Greece in October

In fact, October is a great time to visit and explore the various hiking trails around the crater. The summer temperatures can be absolutely unbearable.

Other things to do in Nisyros include walking around the quaint port town, Mandraki, visiting the beautiful villages, and enjoying the island’s hot volcanic springs.

Read more here: What to do in Nisyros

How to get to Nisyros in October

As it’s a small island, Nisyros doesn’t have an airport. The closest island with an airport is Kos. Usually, there are direct flights to Kos from a few European airports in October.

The ferry from Kos to Nisyros only takes about 60-90 minutes. Check ferry schedules from Kos in advance of your trip, as they may not be running every day.

Another option is to take a day trip to Nisyros from Kos . This will give you enough time to see the volcano and some other highlights of Nisyros. Yet, my personal suggestion is to spend a few days there!

5. Kalymnos – Best for climbing and outdoors activities

Kalymnos is another beautiful island in the Dodecanese, and it’s a great destination for climbing. In fact, October is peak tourist season in Kalymnos, as there is an International Climbing Festival!

Visit Kalymnos in October

The beautiful beaches, overall rugged landscape and quirky museums make Kalymnos one of the best Greek islands to visit for an October holiday. And don’t miss out on a day trip to the nearby islet of Telendos, which only has about 20 residents!

Read more here: What to do in Kalymnos

How to get to Kalymnos in October

The best way to reach Kalymnos is by ferry from Kos, which has an international airport. The ferry trip only takes about 40-50 minutes, and there are usually a few daily ferries until at least late October.

You can check out ferry schedules and book your tickets at FerryHopper .

Kalymnos also has a small domestic airport, where you could fly to from Athens. However, locals told us that it’s best to avoid the experience of landing in Kalymnos… I’m sure they had good reasons!

The ferry from Mastihari Kos to Kalymnos

6. Karpathos – The hottest Greek island in October

Karpathos is one of the most southern islands in Greece. Located between Crete and Rhodes, it is Greece’s hottest island. The average day temperatures in October are rarely under 20 C (68 F), and rain is uncommon.

An introduction to the Greek islands - Karpathos

Karpathos offers an amazing combination of picturesque mountain villages, incredible beaches, and lively tavernas / cafes. People here still follow the local traditions, including the culinary ones!

Hikers should definitely consider visiting Karpathos in October. It’s one of the Greek islands with the least chances of rain at that time of year, and there are many beautiful hiking paths.

How to get to Karpathos in October

Karpathos has a small airport. The quickest way to get there in October is by domestic flight from Athens.

You can also fly to Rhodes, and then take an onward ferry . Just bear in mind that ferries won’t be running on a daily basis at that time of year.

The best place to stay in Karpathos in October is probably Pigadia , the capital and port town. However, if you like quiet villages, have a look at my guide on where to stay in Karpathos , as there are many more resorts.

Also, have a look at this guide on how to get around Karpathos . In October, you’ll be much better off hiring a vehicle . Prices are much lower when compared to the high season, and you can explore the whole island at your own pace.

7. Santorini – Best for iconic volcanic landscapes

OK, let’s admit it – no one dares to leave Santorini out of any “best Greek islands” list. The iconic sunsets, wild volcanic landscapes and blue-domed churches are famous around the world.

It’s true that Santorini is unique – but so is every other Greek island! And as Santorini receives way too many tourists in summer, it can be rather overwhelming.

Pyrgos village in Santorini

Here’s the solution: rather than visiting Santorini in summer, go in October instead! There will be considerably fewer cruise ships, and you will enjoy exploring the quaint villages and beautiful landscapes without too many other people.

Also, have a look at my experience visiting Santorini in winter . I absolutely loved it – but we were very lucky as we didn’t get any bad weather!

Things to do in Santorini

As Santorini is a popular island, you will find a good selection of organized activities and tours. Here are some of the top-rated activities in Santorini:

  • Sunset sailing trip
  • Wine tasting experience in Santorini
  • Guided hiking activity from Fira to Oia
  • Volcano and hot springs visit
  • Electric mountain bike adventure
  • A mythical music experience
  • Sunset kayak tour – yes I love kayaking!

Alternatively, you can always explore on your own, using either the public buses, or a rental vehicle .

Just one thing: please avoid riding the donkeys! Here are a few more things to avoid in Santorini .

How to get to Santorini in October

Until late October, you can find direct flights from several European cities to Santorini. Alternatively, you can also hop on a short domestic flight or a ferry from Piraeus. You can check ferry routes here: Ferryhopper .

8. Milos – Best for beaches and off-road adventure

Milos is an upcoming island destination in Greece. The weird, colourful landscapes and the lovely beaches like Sarakiniko and Kleftiko make Milos stand out from the rest of the Cycladic islands.

Sarakiniko beach Milos Greece

Milos is a paradise for people who like the outdoors. Half of the island is wild and rugged, and you can go for long hikes – or rent a 4WD and explore.

Or you can take a boat tour around the island , which also takes you to the uninhabited island of Polyegos. This is one of the best things I’ve ever done on the Greek islands!

Here are some more travel tips and photos of Milos:

9. Mykonos – Best for beaches

Of all the Greek islands, Mykonos is probably the only one where people’s opinions differ so much. Some visitors love Mykonos for its parties and cosmopolitan ambiance. Others absolutely hate it, for exactly the same reasons, plus the inflated prices.

Visit Mykonos Greece in October

I had the chance to visit Mykonos without the crowds in June 2020, when things were very quiet, and I had an absolute blast with its sandy beaches. Yet, most people who visit Mykonos in summer will not have the same experience, as the island gets busy and crowded.

If you are after a beach vacation, you could consider visiting Mykonos in October. True, you won’t get the warm weather that you’d get in July or August, but you will be able to see the famous island and the quaint Little Venice under a different light.

And who knows, you may even end up on your own private beach for the day!

Tip: While in Mykonos, don’t miss a half-day trip to Ancient Delos . Once upon a time, it was one of the biggest financial and commercial centers of the known Greek world!

How to get to Mykonos in October

You should be able to find direct flights from several European airports to Mykonos. If not, you can take a short domestic flight from Athens, or take a ferry from Piraeus or Rafina ports.

Here is some more information on the popular Athens – Santorini – Mykonos itinerary , and a guide to where is Mykonos .

The windmills in Mykonos in October

10. Tinos – Best for quaint villages

Another upcoming destination in Greece, Tinos is one of the best Cyclades islands you can visit if you love exploring quaint villages. There are over 30 (!) pretty villages, which remain traditional and authentic.

Visit Tinos Greece in October

While Tinos beaches rarely feature among the best beaches in Greece, I really enjoyed exploring them. Some of my favourites were Kolimvithra, Agia Thalassa and Rochari.

But that’s not all! Tinos has an incredible number of churches, monasteries and museums. So, even if you don’t get good weather for swimming, you will still find plenty of things to do and you will experience the real Greek culture.

Here is some more information about things to do in Tinos .

How to get to Tinos in October

Tinos doesn’t have an airport. You would need to fly into either Athens or Mykonos, and then take a ferry.

As October is a shoulder season month, the fast ferries usually stop running around early or mid October. The ferries from Piraeus or Rafina ports in Athens take anywhere between 3.5 and 4.5 hours to get to Tinos. The ferry ride from Mykonos only takes about 30-40 minutes.

You can check out ferry schedules and book your tickets here: FerryHopper

11. Zakynthos – Best Ionian island in October

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is the southernmost of the Ionian islands, and it’s located off mainland Greece’s west coast.

Due to its geographical location, there are more chances of rain in October in Zakynthos than on other Greek islands. But that shouldn’t put you off, as the sea will still be warm enough, especially in early October.

The famous Shipwreck beach in Zakynthos Greece

While some areas of Zakynthos are busy and loud in summer, you will find that October is mostly quiet. It’s a good time of year to visit if you want to appreciate the beautiful beaches, like the famous Navagio, and the outdoors.

Here’s a quick overview of the best things to do in Zakynthos .

How to get to Zakynthos in October

There are direct flights from numerous European airports to Zakynthos. Alternatively, you can fly into Athens, and take an onward domestic flight.

12. Hydra – Best Greek island close to Athens

The cosmopolitan island of Hydra is located in the Saronic Gulf, close to Athens. Its car-free roads and quaint, traditional architecture make it a popular destination for a day trip or a longer stay.

Hottest Greek islands in October - Hydra

Walking along the streets of the main town, you will feel you have been transported to another era! The beautiful, well-preserved mansions and stone houses create a unique atmosphere. You can also visit the monasteries of Prophet Elias and Saint Eupraxia.

Hydra is ideal for a relaxing Greek island break any time of year. However, in October you will experience it without the summer crowds, and enjoy its lovely hiking paths and crystal-clear waters.

How to get to Hydra in October

You can get to Hydra on the flying dolphin from Piraeus. The ferry ride only takes an hour and a half, which is why many people visit on a day trip from Athens .

You can check out ferry schedules and book your tickets on FerryHopper .

Greece is a beautiful country with plenty to offer tourists and travellers all year round, but October may be the best time to go. If you’re looking for an extra special experience, October is the perfect month to visit!

When I told my friends I was going to Greece in October, they all looked at me like I was crazy. “Why would you want to go there then?” they asked. “It’s so hot and crowded!”

But for me, the idea of spending autumn in a country where the sun still shines brightly was too tempting to resist.

And they were right about one thing: it was hot.

But with the weather came fewer tourists, which meant that I could explore the ancient ruins and stunning beaches without having to elbow my way through crowds of people. The locals were also friendlier than usual, always willing to share a smile or recommend their favourite spot on the island.

Here are just a few reasons why visiting Greece in October is so special.

The weather is still warm, but not too hot, and the crowds are smaller than during peak season. The average weather in Greece in October is 20°C, with 12 hours of sunshine per day.

Sunset is around 7.10pm at the beginning of the month, and 5.30pm at the end of the month as daylight saving ends.

Athens gets an average temperature of 24ºC in the day and 14ºC at night.

Mykonos gets an average temperature of 22ºC in the day and 15ºC at night, with an average of 9 hours of daylight. The sea temperature is around 22°C. You’ll be delighted to know that Mykonos weather in October lets you make the best of summer by offering one of the longest summers in the Aegean Sea.

Crete gets an average temperature of 23ºC in the day and 14ºC at night, with an average of 7 hours of daylight. The sea temperature is around 22°C. You can expect a fair amount of rain, though the occasional storms clear up fast. That means  Corfu has relatively high humidity and nice breezes that’ll keep you cool when temperatures are high.

Not only will you be able to enjoy the stunning autumn colours, but you’ll also get to take part in some of the many annual cultural events that take place. I bet you wouldn’t associate Greece with fall colours, but you can actually experience fall in certain islands – Athens, Ioanina, Thassos, Crete, and Zante are good examples of places where you can snap great photos.

If you’re already in Greece and are planning to do some island hopping around Greece, the easiest way to get around the Greek islands is by ferry.

Since there are many ferry companies that operate in Greece, I found Ferryscanner to aggregate the different ferry schedules and prices into one easy platform for comparison.

The best thing is, almost all of the ferry bookings made via their website has a free cancellation policy !

Corfu is one of my favourite places in the world. We’ve been 7 times now. We usually visit in June or September but we did go once in October and it rained the whole time. It was awful and I’ve been too scared to try it again in October since then! The fact there were less crowds was ncie though, but for me, the weather is too hit and miss in October, or maybe we just go unlucky!

The weather in Greece in October is warmer in the first half of the month and gets chillier as the month progresses. More specifically, the temperatures in Greece in October hover between 24 °C and 15 °C, while the chance of rain starts to increase. Our suggestion is to opt for the first couple of weeks for swimming/watersports and the end of the month for sightseeing and road trips.

The evenings are usually a bit chilly, so make sure that you pack a couple of warm cardigans along with your swimsuits. Also, don’t forget to bring an umbrella with you, as the weather can be a bit tricky in October and rainfall is not uncommon.

3. Karpathos

4. Santorini

Greek Islands to avoid in October

Like many islands around the world the Greek Islands are mostly seasonal and are one of the most popular summer destinations on the planet.

As the temperatures drop islands that are heavily beach focused such as Mykonos, Naxos, Milos, Elafonisos and Koufonisia start to close up for the season. It may still be warm enough to swim or certainly sunbake but with the crowds thinning it is not commerically viable for a lot of activities to continue.

People who rent sunbeds and umbrellas, watersports and boats, shops that rely heavily on tourists like souvenir shops and even many bars and restaurants in some of these destinations will start packing up and heading home to Athens or wherever they actually live.

In Mykonos most beach bars and clubs close in the first week of October and the remainder in the second and third weeks. As a result many hotels and other businesses follow suit.

Keep in mind many of these people have worked 24/7 since Easter and are exhausted and in desperate need of some rest. They will spend the off-season making any repairs and improvements and planning for the following year.

plan a trip to crete

Crete is the southernmost island in Greece and enjoys average October daytime temperatures of 24 degrees/75 Fahrenheit making it one of the best islands to visit in October.

The water is usually still warm enough for swimming and the weather is usually calm, with occasional showers.

Crete is also at the tail end of any Meltemi winds that blow at this time of year so transport and activities are rarely disrupted.

Being shoulder season there are lots of great accommodation specials and crowds have eased off at the many popular sites and activities too. Boat trips to Balos Beach and Spingalonga are still running and visiting Knossos Palace is very pleasant even on sunny days.

Crete is also one of the most popular hiking destinations in Greece so October weather makes this quite bearable.

How to get to Crete

There are 3 airports in Crete –   Heraklion   and   Chania   are both International airports and have regular flights to Athens, Thessaloniki and multiple international destinations, mostly in Europe.

There is also a small domestic airport at Lassithi which is close to popular Sitia.

Many people also arrive by Ferry. The main terminal is in Heraklion but there is also a port in Chania and both have regular connections with Athens. In Summer there are also ferries from the Capital to Sitia and Rethymnon.

Where to stay in Crete

If you are short on time then Chania or Rethymnon are the best places to stay.  Heraklion too but the others are much prettier.

If you have longer it’s a good idea to split your stay between say Chania for the East and somewhere like Agios Nikolaos or Elounda for the West.

If you have even more time and/or really want to get away from it all then head to the south where some places are still only accessible by boat.

For couples :

In Chania,   Monastery Estate Venetian Harbour   is stunning and right near the old town and the beautiful Venetian Harbour. Amazing views and hot tubs too!

In Rethymnon, it’s hard to beat   Dyo Suites   which has suites with amazing sea views and indoor jacuzzis, and   Vista Del Porto Luxury Suites   are very similar. R imondi Boutique Hotel   is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World Group and is right in the heart of the Old Town near   Pepi Boutique Hotel   which is Adults Only and also incredible.

For families and groups :

Kores Boutique Houses   in Chania have big 3-bedroom villas that can sleep up to 6 people or you could rent adjoining two-bedroom apartments at   Centro Storico   or   Spring Apartments . Hotels like   Epavli Boutique   and   SanSal   are very experienced in looking after large groups and have fantastic swimming pools too.

Elois Suites   in Rethymnon Old Town have 2 bedrooms apartments that sleep 4 or   Made of Blue Luxury Suites   have 3 bedrooms Villas.   Calmare   is a new and very chic property on the beachfront near the OId Town and has family rooms.

best greeks islands in october

Located in the Dodecanese Islands Rhodes is the third largest island in Greece and has something for everyone and all budgets.

Its history is particularly fascinating having been occupied over the centuries by the Byzantines, Ottomans, Romans and the Knights Hospitaller.

Perhaps most famously, it is believed to have been the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today you can also visit the impressive Acropolis of Lindos, dating back to 300BC, which towers over the charming town of Lindos and the beautiful beaches of St.Pauls Bay next door.

There is also the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town built in part by the Byzantine Empire in the 7th Century and then by the Knights Hospitaller, a Medieval Catholic Order, in around 1309. If you are a history lover or keen to explore   ancient sites about Greek mythology then Rhodes is a perfect choice.

There are also a lot of great beaches and because of the warmer weather, the beach bars usually stay open until November each year.

How to get to Rhodes

Rhodes has a small international airport that has flights from some European destinations like England year-round and numerous flights from all over Europe and further afield in Summer. The are daily flights to Athens and regular flights to Thessaloniki in summer too.

There is a large ferry port with connections to the other Dodecanese islands and on to the Cyclades, Northern Aegean Islands and Crete as well as Athens. There are also regular connections to Turkey.

Where to stay in Rhodes

If visiting between October and March the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rhodes Old Town is a great choice so you can enjoy the history and learn about the rich background of the island. Here we love In Camera Art Boutique Hotel and Bibliotheque , which has 3-bedroom apartments, perfect for families and groups.

If you’re still keen to make the most of the final warm days of October by the beach then Bellevue on the Beach Suites are fantastic or further out at Faliraki is Ammades All Suites Adults Only resort with an amazing beachfront swimming pool. All-inclusive fans love Atlantica Imperial Resort.

If you’re looking for both history and beach then Lindos ticks both boxes and is considered one of the most beautiful spots on the island. F Charm Adults Only Hotel is superb or Villa Aphrodite is a stunning 3 bedroom Villa in heart of the old town with a big terrace and sea views.

best greek islands in october

Located between Crete and Rhodes is Karpathos, an island that actually has the highest temperatures of all the Greek Islands. It is the second largest of the Dodecanese Islands and has a population of around 7000 people.

With daytime averages usually around 26 degrees/80 Fahrenheit and little rain, this island is off the beaten path and is a very authentic island experience. There are beautiful beaches, charming villages and great hiking paths as well as hidden coves and caves, and the neighbouring islet of Saria, which is a popular playground in Summer.

Due to its relatively remote location Karpathos has retained some of its unique customs and traditions which are evident in the costumes, recipes and even the dialect. It also has a rich and often bloody history like many of the islands in the area and in Greek Mythology it was believed to be the birthplace of the Titans.

This is an island that is not only one of the best Greek Islands to visit in October but is relatively untouched by mass tourism and is perfect for rest and tranquillity.

How to get to Karpathos

There is a small airport on Karpathos so it’s possible to fly from Athens, or fly to Rhodes and take a ferry from there.

Where to stay in Karpathos

Couples and Solo: Bella Vista Suites in Karpathos Town have big 1 bedroom apartments with amazing sea views.

Groups and Families : Hotel Finiki View in Foinikion is a very affordable small hotel with a big pool for the kids. If you would prefer a self-contained house then check out Villa Anastasia in Voladha which can sleep up to 7 people and has a pool and sweeping views across the island. Ardani Paradise Villa in Amoopi is also excellent with 2 bedrooms that sleep 4 in 3 beds and a jacuzzi with stunning sea views. Perfect for cool October nights!

2 weeks in Greece

Santorini is a bucket list destination for most people and for good reason.

Despite the cruise ships and the crowds, it remains one of those places that not only meets your expectations but probably exceeds them. The views truly are the stuff of legends and it is little wonder it is so popular with honeymooners.

There are a surprising amount of   things to do on Santorini   with beaches, wineries, hot springs, great shopping, hiking and some of the world’s most iconic and photographed sunsets.

The beaches on Santorini are volcanic and not the best in Greece. But with so many other things to see and do it attracts people with a wide variety of interests and for that reason, many areas operate year-round.

In October it pays to get a room with a jacuzzi rather than a pool, especially for the cool nights later in the month,

How to get to Santorini

The small   international airport   in Santorini has several flights to Athens a day as well as regular flights in summer from other European destinations like Rome and England. Check flight schedules   HERE.

There are also many ferries each day, year-round.

TIP : Both the port and the airport can be quite nuts in summer and there can be long waits for the cable car, taxis and   donkeys . It REALLY pays to have a   private transfer   waiting for you!

Where to stay on Santorini

There are 18 towns and villages in Santorini. Most visitors stay in just 6 of them but particularly the Capital, Fira or the much-photographed Oia or Imerovigli. All of these are perched on the Caldera and look out over the volcano, with incredible sunsets.

Some people also like to stay in the beachside towns of Kamari or Perissa which are a more affordable alternatives.

For couples & solo : It’s hard to beat  Santorini Supreme  for luxury, privacy and gob-smacking views from the private pool.  Sweet Peony is also gorgeous and quite good value compared to other villas of its standard.  For something a bit different look at   Pyrgos 1870 winery.

For families and groups :   White Harmony Suites   have 2 bedroom suites or   Theoxenia Boutique Hotel   have quad rooms and are not far from, dare I say it, McDonald’s.

In Oia, Armeni Village is very central and accessible and they ha ve loft-style rooms with daybeds as well. For groups wanting something really special have a look at this   amazing Windmill   which sleeps 6, or   Porcelain Pegasus villa   with its own big pool.

Hiking in Santorini

best greek islands in october

Located just 2 hours southeast   Athens  by Fast Ferry or north of  Santorini  is the capital of the Cyclades Islands, Syros.

Also known as Siros or Syra this island is very different from the others in the group with its colourful neo-classical buildings and many impressive Government buildings, museums, theatres and even a casino!

This is the most populated of the Cyclades islands and is the Administrative hub with all Government services including law courts, a big hospital and the biggest city hall in Greece, it makes it a year-round destination.

Syros was one of the only Cycladic islands not occupied at some point by the Ottomans so its history is quite unique and fascinating. It was largely developed by the Venetians and the French, hence the beautiful architecture, and to this day its inhabitants are 50% Greek Orthodox and 50% Catholic.

While there are some good beaches on Syros if it is cool there is plenty of other things to do due to its many cultural interests. It’s a treasure chest for history buffs and is a very affordable island too with fantastic, authentic tavernas and cafes.

How to get to Syros

Syros has a domestic airport with year-round flights, especially during the tourist season. All flights are to or from Athens and take just 25 minutes.

Syros is well connected by boat, and reaching it by sea is simple. The ferry from Piraeus, the main port of Athens, takes between 2.5 and 4 hours depending on which ferry you book.

Syros can also be reached via ferry services from another Athens port, Rafina, which runs from May to October. This daily service takes 1.5 hours.

There are also a number of different boat connections to many of the other Cycladic islands, such as Crete, Thessaloniki, Skiathos, and the Dodecanese islands.

Where to stay in Syros

For couples & Solo:  The new   DIIO Suites   have amazing views of the port and are very well priced. Also with amazing views, but this time of Verona bay lined with gorgeous colourful neo-classical buildings, it’s hard to beat   Pafsilipon Suites .

You can also find hotels such as charming  Wind Tales  situated high on a hilltop in a medieval part of the town.  If you are looking for a bit of a splurge the stunning   Aristide Hotel   is a design dream and, in our opinion, one of the most stylish hotels in the Greek Islands.

For families and groups :   F or something really unique, situated high on the hill in Ano Syros up behind Ermoupoli is  Anemomylos Windmill  which is a fair way from the centre of town but with incredible, panoramic views.

Galissas is one of the most popular of Syros’ tourist resorts and has one of the best and biggest beaches and the best sunsets on the island. Here Dolphin Bay Resort  is very popular with families or  Caviri Apartments , which is surrounded by nature.

small group tours

Situated in the   Saronic Islands , Hydra is one of the wealthiest islands in Greece and is where the original ship-owning families built neo-classical mansions on the hills. The locals fought in the Greek War of Independence, while the island’s ships and wealth supported the war.

Hydra was home to a number of famous people including one of Greece’s most important 20th-century painters -Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas Painters and poets such as Seferis and Katsimbalis. Katsimbalis was visited by Author Henry Miller, who was then visited by Australian playwright George Johnston and his wife Charmain Clift who moved to the island and were joined by famous Canadian musician Leonard Cohen, who went on to live in Hydra for 20 years.

Nowadays, Hydra remains a much-loved hotspot but is largely undeveloped. This is partly due to stringent planning regulations, which have ensured that the island’s quaint charm remains intact. As a result, Hydra oozes charm and charisma, with donkey carts and quaint, renovated houses spilling down the hills to the harbour.

While Hydra is calm and traditional, there are also some great clifftop beach bars that are very popular with Athenians on the weekends. Hydra has some good beaches accessible by water taxi but is also a great place for people seeking history and culture who aren’t looking for the beach at all.

Also, because the Saronic Islands tightly hug the Saronic gulf they are the most protected in Greece in terms of wind and bad weather. It is highly unlikely you will experience seasickness in this area and ferry cancellations are not common.

How to get to Hydra

There is no airport on Hydra or, in fact, any of the Saronic islands. The closest one is   Athens so a trip to the Saronics will always involve the sea even if you drive to the mainland ports and catch a small ferry over.

From Pireaus Port Hellenic Seaways Flying Dolphin and Hydrofoils run daily trips to Hydra and several times a day in Summer. Tickets are usually €28 per person and the journey takes 90-120 minutes.

From Varkiza Marina in Athens, you can pre-book a   sea taxi   to take you to Hydra Town, Kamini, Vlychos, Plakes or Mandraki. This takes 2 hours and costs €500 one way for up to 8 passengers.

Where to stay in Hydra

Most visitors to Hydra stay in Hydra Town (also known as Idra). It’s basically impossible to land on the island without taking in the beauty of Hydra Town. The town is wrapped around the island’s port, which is also one of the most beautiful sights on the island.

Couples and Solo:  A great mid -range hotel is the very charming Hotel Sophia right on the harbour overlooking everything. For a splurge check out Hydrea Exclusive Hospitality.

Groups and families: Villa ADA is a lovely 3-bedroom house at the back of Hydra Town with sea views and a big terrace. It can sleep 6 people plus a child or two and there are 3 bathrooms as well which is a bonus.

A DAY TRIP TO HYDRA

If you are short on time it is quite possible to do a day trip from Athens to the Saronic island. You can either use the ferry system as mentioned above or join a   full-day cruise   that visits Poros and Aegina as well and includes lunch!

There is also a   VIP cruise  option which includes your transfers in Athens, priority boarding and access to a VIP lounge on the boat.

best greek islands in october

With its mix of traditional Greek coastal towns, ancient history, beaches, nightlife and great food, Aegina is the best of the Greek islands rolled into one.

The bonus is that, unlike other islands, it’s practically on Athens’ doorstep, making it easy to reach, and it’s very affordable, too. In fact, a lot of people who live on Aegina work in Athens and commute every day. It’s not as glamorous as it’s neighbours   Hydra   and Spetses but it is also a lot cheaper and even more accessible.

Aegina is renowned for its Pistachio’s, and the Temple of Aphea is one of the most important in the country. It’s an authentic island that is perfect for visiting year-round.

How to get to Aegina

Being so close to Athens visiting is fairly straightforward.

It is also often combined with visits to other Saronic islands such as Poros,   Hydra   and Spetses. In fact there is a very popular   3-island cruise   that combines the three on a day trip.

There are four ferry companies that run between Athens’ port, Piraeus, and Aegina, all of which leave from the east side of Piraeus Port at Gate 8. Ferry companies are Anes Ferries, Blue Star Ferries, Saronic Ferries and Aegean Flying Dolphins.

Where to stay in Aegina

The main town on the island of Aegina is also called Aegina. This is the capital and principal port and therefore pretty busy with tourists, hotels, restaurants and things to do. The whole town’s a picture-perfect place, and staying here means taking long walks along the harbour, stopping off for a pick-me-up at one of the town’s many cafes, and enjoying fresh fish in a taverna.

Solo and couples: Here we recommend staying at  Plaza Hotel , a great budget choice right across from the beach with amazing sunset views or the charming Aeginitikon Arhontikon Boutique Hotel which is in an historic building .

Perdika is a village surrounding a lovely bay and has some great hotels such as   Ilioperato  and  LaLiBay resort and spa  which is a little further around the cove.

Families and groups: If travelling in a group  Los Pistachios is on the outskirts of town and is a truly amazing new 2 bedroom Villa with a small pool, a gym , a beautiful garden and even a fireplace and can easily sleep 6. Right in town is another fantastic place, Feidiou1 , a renovated 2 bedroom apartment in a converted mansion by the Port.

Hottest Greek Islands in October

The best Greek islands to visit in October include Crete, which is the hottest Greek island in October, Santorini as it is quieter compared to the summer months, and Rhodes.

Santorini is a good Greek island to visit in October

Reasons for visiting Greek Islands in October

October is a good time of year to visit the Greek islands. Travel costs drop in October on the Greek islands, with accommodation being much cheaper than in the high season months. Car rentals on the Greek islands are also much more budget friendly in October.

Additionally, fewer other visitors travel to the Greek islands during October which means if you prefer to avoid crowds, October will be the month for you!

Personally, October is one of my favourite months to do a little Greek island hopping. I find the warmer Dodecanese island group and Crete to be excellent destinations for making the summer last well into the Fall!

dave briggs exploring greek islands october

This is Vanessa and myself (I'm Dave, hi!) exploring Knossos in Crete in October. Not only did we get lovely weather, there were also way fewer people at this historical site at that time of year.

Which brings me on to…

Hottest Greek Island In October

Crete is the warmest Greek island in October. Crete experiences pleasant weather, with average daytime temperatures in October ranging from 20-25°C (68-77°F). Crete's October daytime highs are between 22-27°C (72-81°F) and nighttime lows somewhere around 15-20°C (59-68°F). The sea remains warm, around 22-24°C (72-75°F), suitable for swimming.

I should caveat this though. October is the shoulder season and the beginning of autumn. The weather can be more variable in Crete in October , and it only takes a few clouds and a bit of a breeze to make a beach day less enticing.

While Crete might be the hottest Greek island to visit in October, you should still be prepared for overcast days, with potentially a little rain.

Best Greek Islands to Visit in October

It's not just about the October weather on the Greek islands though. In this article, I've put together some information about 10 of the best Greek islands in October which take into account other factors such as tourist numbers, hiking, and affordability

Crete – Great weather in October

Santorini – great month for sunsets, rhodes – warm and pleasant, mykonos – quieter beaches, naxos – a taste of authentic island life, hydra – short trip from athens, corfu – good time for walking around castles, andros – hiking and outdoor activities, kefalonia – last warm sun of the year, syros – local nightlife, weather on the greek islands in october.

The weather on the islands of Greece in October can be quite variable. There will generally be some sunny days, but there will also be some rainy days.

It also depends which islands in Greece you choose to travel to. For example the Ionian islands will have more mild temperatures than islands in the south of the country like Crete. They might have a little more rain too.

During the day, you can expect warm weather for the most part especially in the early part of October. So pack summer wear and plan for a few beach days!

In the October evenings, temperatures start to drop, and you will probably need a jacket, unless you come from countries with really cold weather and are used to it!

As a rough rule of thumb, the hottest Greek islands in October tend to be in the south of the country – think Crete, the Dodecanese islands and Cycladic islands.

If your main aim when visiting the islands is to stay on the beach and go swimming, September is overall a better option, as the days are still fairly long and sea temperature is relatively high. October could be considered a little more risky, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

Hiking from Fira to Oia. The views are truly spectacular.

At the same time, if you want to go sightseeing in the cities, or if you want to go hiking on the islands, October is a perfectly fine choice.

October Greek Island Travel

If you are planning to visit some of the Greek islands in October, check Ferryhopper for updated ferry schedules. You will find fewer ferries running on routes between islands in October. Typically, SeaJets stop operating most of their tourist routes at the end of the month.

You can also reach most of the islands by a short flight from Athens airport, as well as some European airports. There is always talk of extending the tourist season in Greece, but for now, most international flights to the Greek islands stop by the end of October.

Crete in October

As mentioned previously, the weather stays warmer for longer in Crete, which means October is a great month to visit. I took the photo below at Vai beach in October, and as you can see, there's plenty of people sunning themselves and swimming!

With some of the mildest temperatures, some of the most diverse landscapes and some of the best food in Greece, Crete is an ideal destination all year round.

It's often thought of as the warmest Greek island in October, and there's plenty to see and do. The sea temperatures are also still warm enough for swimming, making it a good choice of destination for autumn sun holidays.

The October weather on the Greek island of Crete is also much more comfortable for hiking and exploring the towns, cities, and other sites.

Check out this extensive article: Visiting Crete in October

There are regular ferries from Athens to Chania and other destinations in Crete, but you can also consider a short flight from Athens airport. There are also direct flights to Chania or Heraklion from several European cities.

Santorini in October

A guide to the best Santorini sunset hotels

In my opinion, October is one of the best months to visit Santorini .

Even though cruise boats still visit the island on pretty much a daily basis, the island is considerably less crowded than in the summer peak season.

As a result, accommodation prices are lower. Most restaurants, cafés and bars are open, and the island is still lively, but not overly busy.

Swimming-wise, given that Santorini is not as south as Crete and Rhodes, the water might be a little cold, but most people should be fine to swim on a sunny day.

While on the island, it’s worth taking one of the popular day tours in Santorini , especially the volcano tour, or perhaps a wine tour of Santorini .

If you want to travel from Athens to Santorini in October, my suggestion is to fly, though you can also take a high-speed ferry if you prefer. This article explains in detail how to get from Athens to Santorini .

Rhodes in October

October in Rhodes is a good month to see the Greek island

For anyone who wants to have a beach holiday in Greece, but doesn’t have enough time to explore Crete, Rhodes is the other best Greek island to visit in October.

With mild sunny weather, an amazing medieval town, the stunning Lindos castle, and a bunch of beautiful beaches, Rhodes is a fantastic place to visit in October.

You can expect average temperatures to be 24 degrees during the day, and 17 degrees at night.

It’s best to arrange your accommodation in Rhodes town, as there is a lot to see there. You can easily spend two days just walking around the town, and visiting the superb museums.

Tip – on some days, you can walk on the Walls of the city as well.

When it comes to beaches, Rhodes has plenty to offer, and it’s best to rent a car if you want to explore them. From the famous Anthony Quinn beach , which is a paradise for snorkelers, to the faraway Prasonissi beach on the south, ideal for windsurfers and freecampers, you will definitely love the beaches in Rhodes.

Combine one of your beach-hopping days with a visit at Lindos Castle.

If you prefer not to drive yourself, you can take a guided bus tour of the island. There are many different ones available, some of which including Lindos. If you want to get off the beaten track, this is one of the best options: Rhodes Safari Tour .

Finally, you can also consider a day trip from Rhodes to Marmaris , in Turkey!

As ferries from Pireaus to Rhodes take at least 13 hours, the best way to get from Athens to Rhodes is by a short flight. There are several direct flights from European cities to Rhodes as well.

Mykonos in October

The cosmopolitan island of Mykonos is most well known as a summer party island destination for people who want to see and be seen. October though can be a good time to visit.

A beach view in Mykonos

While the party scene isn't rocking quite as hard as it does in July and August, it is still there, but it's the beaches that are the main reason to visit Mykonos during October.

Of all the Greek islands, Mykonos does have some of the most incredible beaches , and with fewer people crowding on them, October may be just the best time of year to see them.

Early October would be better, as the sea will be warmer to swim in, and there will be less chance of rain. After mid October, it might start to get a little cool to swim as the average sea temperatures drop.

Naxos in October

You might be surprised to see Naxos in the list of best Greek islands in October. However, Naxos has it all – history, mountain villages, pretty landscapes, and stunning beaches, so it’s really an ideal destination in Greece.

It should be warm enough be able to spend some time on the beaches in Naxos , especially if you visit early in October.

A guide to the best things to do in Naxos island Greece

Naxos has one of the most unique main towns in the Cyclades group of islands , with the white-washed town houses having merged with the Naxos Castle.

Allow a few hours to wander around, and allow enough time to get lost in the maze of tiny streets. Apart from Naxos town, make sure you visit some of the mountain villages, such as Apiranthos, Filoti, Koronos and Halki.

In terms of food, Naxos has several unique meat dishes and many distinct types of local cheese, such as graviera and arseniko. Make sure you taste the local kitro, a distilled alcoholic drink, and consider visiting one of the local distilleries, such as Distillery M. G. Vallindras in Halki village.

Special events in Naxos in October include the Naxathlon, a special triathlon event, and the celebration of the “Ohi” day, when you will see parades out on the streets. Take a look here for some of the best things to do in Naxos .

You can get to Naxos either by ferry from the Athens ports, or via flight from Athens or other European cities. Naxos is one of the best islands to go for off season travelers who want to see a bit more of the genuine Greece.

Hydra in October

A view of Hyrda from the Olympic Cruises boat

The cosmopolitan island of Hydra is popular among locals as well as tourists. Hydra’s role during the Revolution against the Ottoman Empire in 1821 was very important, something that locals take considerable pride in.

A small island closed to traffic, Hydra keeps an authentic charm in terms of architecture, with many 18th-19th century mansions built in unique style.

At the same time, Hydra has a network of trails that expand to over 80kms all around the island, and as such is an ideal hiking destination close to Athens. Apart from the beautiful nature, you will also see many monasteries around Hydra.

The island also has its fair share of nice beaches, some very close to the main town, and some others a long hike or a short boat ride away. As in October you probably wouldn't be planning a beach vacation in Hydra anyway, the beaches are good enough for refreshing swims.

The island can be visited either on a day trip from Athens to Hydra , or for multiple days. Sea dolphins and ferries depart from Pireaus to Hydra port several times a day, taking anywhere from one to 3,5 hours to get to Hydra.

Note that if you are going to Hydra in late October, especially around St Dimitrios day (26 October) or the “Ohi” day (28 October), it’s best to reserve your accommodation and tickets in advance.

There are festivals and special events on the island, so it’s a popular time to visit among Greeks. You might also see the “Hydra” sailing race, taking place around the 28 October.

Corfu in October

A visit to Corfu in the Autumn months is a time of year that many travellers choose for its atmosphere and peace. You can enjoy this very special Ionian island more than at other times of year, when you are spoilt for choice with activities on offer.

Exploring Corfu town in Greece

While October may be considered a shoulder season month to visit Corfu, it's a great time for more authentic experiences. The sunny days are not too hot, and walking around the castles, fortresses and hiking trails is a lot more pleasant.

October is a good month for trips up into the mountain villages, and tasty local food in the tavernas that cater to year round clients and not just tourists. Many of the beach bars will be closing down in October, especially towards the end of the month.

Kefalonia in October

The tourist season in Kefalonia may be drawing to an end in October, but the first two weeks still provide enough sun and warmth to keep swimming. Well, just about!

Grapes in Kefalonia

With no crowds, and the seasons turning, October can be a good time to see local harvest where grape picking and wine making start to transition into olive picking.

Syros in October

Famed for its neo-classical architecture, Syros is the capital of the Greek Cyclades islands. While the summer months are the most popular time to visit, October can be quite interesting.

A stunning view of Syros island in Greece

With a lively student population, you can find bars and tavernas, live music venues and gatherings that have more of a local touch than you'll find at other times of year. Is sidari Greece in October warm

It will be one of the colder and wetter parts of Greece due to its location (Corfu – if we are thinking of the same place). However, who knows what it would be like this year with the unpredictable weather!

Hi I’m not sure why you don’t mention Kos for October? I’ve been many times and it’s always very warm. Being so close to Bodrum and with many things to do it’s ideal. Direct flights too. I would definitely add it to your list and even say it’s as warm as Crete

Hi Dave Thanks so much for writing this page, very informative. I have 3 weeks to travel around greek islands from late October to mid November. I know the ferry schedules drop off on the shoulder season so I was wondering if you have any advice for islands to hop between with the least amount of back tracking or having to go back to Athens. Thanks in advance Trudy

Hi Trudy, Yes you’re very much in the off season at that time of year. Some of the smaller islands may appear deserted because of the time of year as they all but close down. The Cyclades are probably your best bet, but even then the schedules will be drastically reduced. If possible, look at combining Santorini, Syros, Andros, as these islands will still have life on them and things to see. The problem is, they are not exactly neighbours! Syros is the capital of the Cyclades, so this is a central point to reach the other from. I don’t think there would be much benefit in including Mykonos in November, as I think even Delos closes. Perhaps as a change of plan, consider spending the three weeks in Crete (with perhaps a side trip to another island). Crete is quite southerly, so will still be warm, and would be a great place to take a road trip around at that time of year. Also, it has a big population, so there’s always life on the island!

Hi there, planning 10 days in Mykonos from 1st Oct, is this a good time do you think and what will the weather be like? Should I cancel and go somewhere else instead?

Hi, Strictly from a weather point of view, you’ll be there for the tailend of the good weather. Every year is different, but it should still be warm enough to swim in the sea at that time. Southern islands, like Crete, tend to have better weather for longer. A lot will depend on what it is you would like from your vacation as well.

Yes, first week in October is definitely a good time to visit Santorini and Oia, been there two years ago, fantastic vacation 🙂

Greece in October: Discovering Greece’s Timeless Splendor

October is the best on earth: mild to sunny weather, low season rates, and fewer competitors. Win-win. But the chillier autumn arrived officially by the end of the month. Hordes of summers have left and Greece can enjoy them relatively peacefully, with airlines and hotels offering significant savings rates for shoulder seasons. It is the world’s best. The plan will be reduced, however, and accordingly, plan for airline and ferry schedules.

Weather in Greece in October

Is it hot in Greece in October? If you’re visiting Greece in October, you might be wondering. No, that isn’t true. Despite popular belief, Greece’s weather is mild and friendly throughout the year, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful beaches. In October, the temperature in Greece ranges from 24 to 14 degrees Celsius.

October is the ideal month to visit Greece because of the warm weather, fewer crowds, seasonal delights, and exclusive experiences. It is highly recommended to visit Greece in October.

Weather in Greece in October

Visitors to Greece in October are in for a treat, particularly if island hopping is on the agenda. Hiking, rock climbing, and biking through vibrant autumn landscapes and sun-kissed olive fields are also common activities at this time of year for outdoor enthusiasts.

During this shoulder season,’ the enticing turquoise waters and fewer visitors provide the ideal welcome. Seasonal Mediterranean cuisine, as well as Greek holidays such as O Day and Saint Dimitrios, can be enjoyed. Without the crowds, charming authentic experiences such as joining farmers as they pick their seasonal harvest of olives and grapes are much more readily accessible.

The sightseeing is in Athens, Nafplion, and other top cultural attractions. This is a preferred month: mild temperatures make you enjoy walking, and you have fewer visitors to the Acropolis and museums. The crowds are dwindling on the most populous islands as well, so this is a time for the nightlife until the end of October to hop on a ferry to Naxos, Ios, Mykonos, or Santorini.

Temperature in Greece in October

The average high temperature for the day is 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Early October is normally already warm enough to comfortably sunbathe and dine outside at night, with little chance of rain. The Ionian and Aegean seas are rapidly cooling by mid-October; if you enjoy swimming, go early in the month. Cloudy days are more common by the third week, temperatures have dropped dramatically, and evenings are very chilly. Rain chances increase to one-in-three days as the month progresses. With your summer clothes and swimwear, carry a fleece jacket and long trousers, as well as a raingear or an umbrella.

What to wear in Corfu in October?

Though the daytime temperatures are warm enough for summer wear — shorts, sun dresses, and swimwear for the beach — you’ll want to bring warmer clothes for the chillier evenings.

Think cardigans, pullovers, long trousers and wraps. It’s also worth bringing a brolly and a light waterproof jacket.

Is AC necessary in Corfu in October?

Given that the evening temperatures drop off, you don’t actually need AC in Corfu in October. It’s perfectly possible to get a good night’s sleep without it.

This may come as welcome news to travellers who are keen to get off the beaten track and stay in less touristy accommodation, where AC isn’t  de rigueur .

Consider renting a car

The good news: with a large local population, Corfu’s public transport system doesn’t shut-down during the out-of-season months. The less-good news: October sees the bus service reduced.

So, if you’re hoping to get around quickly and conveniently — and want to follow lesser-travelled roads — you might want to hire a car.

Aside from exploring elegant Corfu Town, and blissing out on beaches (don’t miss Longás — one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece ) , visiting Corfu in October offers opportunities to uncover authentic island culture. It’s also a good time to explore the great outdoors.

Experience Óhi Day

Held on 28 th October, this national holiday presents parades, folk dancing and speeches to commemorate prime minister Metaxas’ one-word reply to Mussolini’s 1940 ultimatum. Namely, Ohi! (“No!”).

Walk the Corfu Trail

Intro adventure? Being cooler, October is a top time to tackle the Corfu Trail. At 200km, this walking route covers the entire island from Cape Asprókavos in the south to Áyios Spyrídhon beach in the far north.

Traversing a rich variety of terrain – from beaches to high peaks – experienced walkers can cover the whole route in around ten days.

Scale Mount Pandokrátor

Mount Pandokrátor — Corfu’s highest mountain, no less — offers a mix of adventure and history.

Capped by 17th-century Pandokrátoras monastery, from the south you can reach it via the village of Strinýlas. Being a popular base for walkers, the village is served by buses from Corfu Town.

Thanks to its ancient ruins, picturesque beaches, and incredible food, Greece is one of the top tourist destinations. In 2023, over 32 million people visited.

I was born in Athens and currently split my years living between the US and Greece , so I've spent plenty of time in the beautiful European country.

Here are 10 things I think tourists should know before visiting.

There’s so much more to see in Greece than the popular islands.

greece travel october

It seems like everyone visits Mykonos, Santorini, and maybe Paros, but Greece has over 220 inhabitable islands. Plus, most of them are more budget-friendly than the popular spots.

I recommend looking into places like Kimolos, Astypalaia, Paxoi (also known as Paxos and Paxi), or Folegandros.

The Greek mainland is also beautiful. There's a lot to see there, from UNESCO sites at Delphi and Meteora and the turquoise waters of the Peloponnese to the stunning mountains and villages of Epirus.

Athens is more than the Acropolis.

greece travel october

Athens has great nightlife , restaurants, museums, and cool neighborhoods like Plaka, Exarcheia, Psyrri, and Pangrati.

Tourists who just swing by to check the Acropolis off their list are missing out. I've always found it to be one of the liveliest cities in the world.

You don’t need to tip 20%.

greece travel october

Greek servers generally rely on hourly wages, so there isn't the same tipping culture as the US .

I normally just round up the bill or leave a couple of Euros on the table as a tip — unless I had exceptional service or dined at a more formal (and tourist-oriented) restaurant.

Pace yourself when drinking alcohol.

greece travel october

A lot of travelers take advantage of Greece's lax attitude toward alcohol restrictions. Coupled with the fact that Greek bars and clubs close pretty late (like 4 a.m. late), some tourists get sloppy.

Locals usually intersperse drinks with food and water so they can last the whole night, and I recommend tourists do the same.

Slow down and take Sundays off.

greece travel october

Greeks have a pretty relaxed relationship with time — people often arrive late and stores may open half an hour after they said they would.

Service in Greece can seem slow to people from more fast-paced places, especially on the quieter islands . A lot of stores and supermarkets are also closed on Sundays, even in Athens.

I know this can be annoying at times, but I recommend just enjoying the slower pace of life.

Don’t try to visit too many islands on one trip.

greece travel october

So many people ask me if they can fit four or five islands into a seven-day trip, and I never recommend it. Take your time and enjoy each destination for at least a couple of days.

Half the joy of the Greek islands is getting to destress. If you're hopping from ferry to ferry and running around to cover the highlights, you'll miss out on the best parts of the country.

Be sensitive about natural disasters.

greece travel october

I never thought I'd have to say this, but I have seen multiple tourists in the last few years posting about how "pretty" the skies or sunsets are thanks to the glow from raging wildfires .

At a time when a lot of Greek people are wondering if their houses are still standing or their loved ones have gotten to safety, it's a pretty insensitive thing to do.

Don't skip out on experiencing a traditional taverna.

greece travel october

Athens and other popular Greek destinations now have a lot of upscale restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. But make sure to eat in a traditional taverna at least once.

A taverna is a casual restaurant with family-style dining. Diners can spend hours in them chatting with friends while sharing food paired with some great wine or ouzo (a Greek aperitif).

Greek food is more than just gyros.

greece travel october

Well-known dishes like gyros and souvlaki are truly delicious, but Greek cuisine is so much more than that.

For example, a lot of Greeks start their day with a tiropita (cheese pie) and freddo coffee. Each region also has local specialties that I recommend inquiring about.

In tavernas, popular menu items include calamari, octopus, all kinds of fish, grilled and fried cheeses (like saganaki and halloumi), and side dishes like fava.

Learn a few local words.

greece travel october

Most younger Greek people understand English, but you may run into problems communicating with older people — especially in more rural areas.

Even if a local person can understand you, I think it's nice to learn a few simple words and phrases like "good morning," "thank you," and "how are you?"

It's nice when tourists make a little bit of an effort.

Greece Announces New Plan to Protect Some of Its Pristine Beaches

The government has pledged to crack down on rapid development, and on seaside businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom. But some residents and conservationists are unimpressed.

A beautiful beach.

By Niki Kitsantonis

Reporting from Athens

The Greek government on Friday published a list of 198 “untrodden beaches” that it said are now off limits to bars, restaurants and large public gatherings in its latest attempt to contain development and address the backlash to the throngs of tourists that descend on the country’s coastlines each year.

The move comes amid growing frustration among residents of Greek islands and parts of the coastal mainland that are popular with foreign visitors. Protests ballooned into a nationwide “beach towel movement” last summer as disgruntled locals complained that they were being pushed off their own beaches by businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom that brought more than 32 million foreign visitors to Greece last year .

On the country’s Cycladic islands, local residents joined forces with the authorities to push back against a wave of construction .

Greece’s conservative government has pledged to crack down on the development, and on seaside businesses that violate regulations. In February it passed a law aimed at regulating the use of the country’s coastline, imposing penalties of up to 60,000 euros for businesses occupying more than 50 percent of Greek beaches with umbrellas and sun beds.

Critics said the law did not go far enough to curb the problem, with some claiming that the government was perpetuating the issue by not tackling illegal land use more comprehensively.

The list of “untrodden beaches,” unveiled in a joint agreement between Greece’s finance and environment ministers, is part of a broader effort to restore balance, the government said. “The main goal is to combine environmental protection with sustainable development,” Kostis Hatzidakis, the economy and finance minister, said on Friday.

“The environment is a valuable component of the Greek tourist product,” he said.

Under the new initiative, the government was putting public assets “under a strict framework of rules, penalties and obligations,” Mr. Hatzidakis said. Inspections and transparency would be increased, as would “the enforcement of the law,” he added.

The beaches on the list are in areas included in the European Union’s Natura program, a network of vulnerable habitats across Europe that are protected under European law. Among the beaches listed on Friday are spots on popular islands such as Milos, Naxos, Lesbos, Samothrace and in the southern Peloponnese peninsula.

The islands were selected based on the advice of the country’s Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency and are all “areas of high ecological importance,” Theodoros Skylakakis, the environment and energy minister, said on Friday.

Under the new initiative, no section of those beaches can be auctioned off for commercial use, and the presence of sun-loungers and umbrellas will be prohibited, as will the organization of public events involving more than 10 people.

Another initiative being introduced by the government is a new app called “MyCoast,” on which people can report violations.

Some environmentalists in Greece were not impressed by Friday’s announcement. Eleni Andrianopoulou, a resident of Naxos and a member of a local “Save the beaches” group, said the government’s original plan had been for more than 1,000 beaches nationwide to be covered, adding that Natura areas require “real protection.”

“From the beginning we had stressed that this reform for untrodden beaches was a fraud.”

Demetre Karavellas, director of the World Wildlife Fund Greece, said the authorities were jumping the gun with their list of pristine beaches, noting that there are more than 100 marine and coastal areas in Greece that are recognized by the Natura program but have yet to be effectively managed or conserved.

“The government should start by complying with its basic legal obligations before creating new vague categories of protection,” he said.
