Trips to Thailand Ages 30s-40's | Over30Experiences

While we have a slight different style than when we'd travel in our 20s , we're still looking for affordable trips so we can make travel a priority in our lives. Most of our travelers in their 30s and 40s come solo, but others come with friends, as a couple, but always leave the kids at home. Meet like-hearted folks, who want to be active, and know life doesn't end when you turn 30!

Peru for Insiders

I had a fantastic time in Peru! Breathtakingly beautiful scenery, delicious food, great people, amazing activities and visits to some amazing Inca sites! What more could one ask for? My personal favourite moments of the trip where visiting colca canyon to view the condors soaring over spectacular views, the mini hike to get back and to top it off a afternoon of relax in thermal baths! And the icing on the cake of the whole trip....The Inca trail! Seeing Machu Picchu appear infront of us as the sun sets on the view point after a day hike! Truly unforgettable!! Thank you Indico

client

Peru is a big country packed with things to do, and this was a really thoughtful and well-crafted itinerary. I would never be able to organise this trip alone. Here you will eat lots of delicious food, get lots of fresh air, and make lots of incredible memories. I really appreciated the way we climbed elevation, and then dropped down in altitude from Lake Titicaca into Cusco thus ensuring we were well acclimatised for the Inca trail. This was quite an active holiday with some early mornings, but there were opportunities to take it easy. E.g. the thermal springs after our visit to Colca Canyon was just perfect. The Inca trail day-hike was incredible, and whilst you don't need to be an experienced hiker I'd recommend if you can doing a couple of hikes around 10km before your trip. Our guide had spare walking poles, which I'd never used before but I found very useful when climbing the steps. Staying with Gregorio and his family by Lake Titicaca was also extremely special - I loved having the opportunity to get to know them. If possible, I'd also recommend learning as much Spanish as you're able to. If like me you're also into knitting and/or crochet you will get a lot of excitement and inspiration as well :) Our guide was from Cusco, and so being shown this area by him was a great experience and we got some excellent recommendations. I loved learning about the history of the country throughout our trip. Overall I absolutely loved this Indico adventure, & I highly recommend it!

Best of Lisbon & Sintra

For me it was the first vacation of this kind, and I thought a lot beforehand whether this was really exactly what I wanted... I can only say so much: Because of the magnificent organization in advance, the individual program during the trip and the super lovely tour guide Lina you made the trip to one of my highlights of this year.

Jordan: From Desert to Sea

Jordan positively surprised me with its diversity and cultural wealth. The trip brought us closer to the country and its people. Every day had its own highlight. From the city, to the desert and to the sea, we were delighted every day and well informed by our guide about cultural aspects and backgrounds. I highly recommend the country and this trip!!!

Petra

Enjoyed the trip to Jordon very much, got to experience the culture, history and see the different landscape of desert and sea during the 8 days trip. Highly recommended

9 Group Travel Companies For Millennials That You Should Have On Your Radar

group travel for 30 year olds

It's not a secret that millennials love to travel . Whether it's for the Instagram fame, a chance to party, or just the genuine life experience of being in a new place and culture, it's true. In fact, according to research done by Contiki in 2018, the majority of millennials would give up sex for awhile in order to travel the world . Yeah, told you we love to travel! Most millennials in the study were also legitimately willing to temporarily give up Netflix, booze, and coffee in exchange for travel, too, and that's saying a lot. I mean... coffee?

But another interesting quirk in the millennial travel game is our apparent penchant for more adventure-based trips. Many young travelers reportedly opt for hostels or vacation rentals over hotels, making for a more authentic experience, and they are also more likely to seek off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Another thing millennial travelers are into? Group trips. "One of the latest trends in travel is the guided small-group excursion, tailored to give a pack of like-minded young people an immersive experience in a destination," explained Newsday . Group travel packages have a reputation for catering toward an older crowd, featuring trips that check off the boxes of every predictable touristy destination in town. But due to their interest in travel and the difficulty involved in aligning schedules and budgets with a group of friends, millennials have embraced and revitalized the group-of-solo-travelers trend, resulting in a surge of travel companies catering to this generation and organizing international trips specifically for young people.

Check out some of the travel companies for millennials that are curating epic, unique, and adventurous trips for groups of young solo travelers — and start saving up that PTO for a trip of your own.

Contiki (the company behind the sex/Netflix/booze/coffee stats above) curates worldwide trips exclusively for 18-35 year olds. Their motto is "travel with no regrets," which we can get behind — and they offer hundreds of different trips to destinations on nearly every continent. They also have a student discount available, for all you millennial scholars out there.

For The Love Of Travel

For The Love Of Travel is a boutique travel company that offers unique curated group trips for people ages 25-39. "[W]e embrace the idea of 'slow travel,'" the company explained on its site. "That is, having an authentic cultural experience that connects us with the soul of the destination and people we can relate to." Check out their incredible selection of experiences .

Under 30 Experiences

Under 30 Experiences is an adventure travel company aimed toward solo travelers who are — you guessed it — under the age of 30 (with a minimum travel age of 21). But they're not too strict about it: Most guests are apparently between 21-35, and the company says they usually serve "professionals, creative types, ambitious students, entrepreneurs, and motivated young people just figuring it out."

Aimed exclusively at young professionals, Travendly is a group travel company that thoughtfully puts together tribes of like-minded young people (usually in their mid-twenties to late thirties) for ultimate travel enjoyment. With more than a dozen curated trips to countries around the globe , there's something for everyone.

G Adventures' 18-To-Thirtysomethings

The collection of 18-To-Thirtysomethings tours offered by travel company G Adventures are described as"fast-paced and affordable adventures designed for young travellers." Their goal is to create exciting, adventure-based trips that young solo travelers can actually afford, so check out their offerings of trips to destinations around the world .

Travel company Topdeck organizes trips for 18 to 30-something year olds, and the company's passion is to "inspire young people through life-changing travel experiences." The group trips are made specifically for solo travelers who are looking for fun and adventures, and they offer trips all around Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia.

Group travel company Flash Pack curates unique and stylish trips for anyone in the millennial age bracket. Their trips are designed for solo travelers in their late 20s through 40s who are looking for an actually authentic and adventurous experience, and they specialize in high-quality, flexible, boutique accommodations.

Intrepid's 18 To 29s Adventures

This is for those of us on the younger side of the Millennial canon. Formerly known as Gecko, the 18 To 29s Adventures offered by group tour & travel company Intrepid . While they are strict with the age range, these tours are specially designed to be suited to young travelers and focus on local adventures, making their trips sustainability-minded.

EF Ultimate Break

Travel company EF Ultimate Break offers more than 65 different trips made for every travel style, and cater to solo travelers who are ages 18 to 29 for group trips. Unlike many other companies, flight costs are built into its trips, so once you pay (or get on a payment plan) you'll be all set to go, making it super easy for busy millennials.

Day 1 - Kyoto

After you land at Kansai International Airport or Osaka International Airport, make your way to Kyoto. This charming, historical city used to be the capital of Japan; today, it's famous for its gardens, parks, temples, and shrines.

Check in to your hotel in the late afternoon and get ready to experience the culture, heritage, and history of one of Asia's most fascinating nations. To kick off your trip, you'll enjoy a popular contemporary dinner at a local izakaya as you meet your new Japanese travel crew.

group travel for 30 year olds

    Day 2 - Kyoto MEDITATIOn + adventure

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before jumping on an e-bike and riding out into some of Kyoto's beautiful and meticulously landscaped parks. You'll explore an ancient temple with the crew and even participate in a Zen meditation lesson. After soothing the mind and body, fuel up on a ramen lunch before you continue on. The evening is yours to explore the nightlife in one of Japan's most charming major cities. If you're up for it, wander over toward the Geisha District and stroll along the banks of the Kamogawa River.

Pork ramen in Japan.

Day 3 - Hiroshima

Glimpse of history.

Today, we're heading to the train station and riding over to Hiroshima. You'll get a front-row seat into the city's history as you discover how it recovered from tragedy and, in turn, developed into one of the most dynamic metro regions in the world. For lunch, you'll enjoy a savory local dish called Okonomiyaki. Literally translating to "grilled as you like it," this Japanese-style omelet is one of our favorites in the entire country. The afternoon is yours to continue exploring the area, including the romantic island of Miyajima and its massive torii gate, or to head back to Kyoto at your own leisure.

Orange gates outside of Kyoto.

Day 4 - Kyoto Up for Anything

Kyoto's full of magical shrines, temples, and forests, and today's free for you to explore them all with friends. You could head to the Nishiki Market for a fresh sushi lunch and then make your way over to the picturesque bamboo forest of Arashiyama. Or you could check out the sacred ceremonial spaces of the ancient Shimogamo-jinja Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (of course, there are 16 others in Kyoto!). In the evening, grab your new crew and head to the famous orange gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine for a beautiful sunset over the city. At night, continue the fun and take the party to Kyoto's funky little izakayas scattered throughout town.

Arashiyama bamboo forest outside of Kyoto.

Day 5 - Nozawaonsen

In the onsen.

After breakfast in Kyoto, we’re hopping on a train and heading north through leafy-green countryside for Nagano prefecture and the magical mountain town of Nozawaonsen. With snow-capped winters and flower-filled summers, the scenery’s stunning year-round. A local guide will introduce you to the Stamp Trail—a uniquely Japanese journey leading you through meandering streets lined by Edo-era architecture and spiritual temples surrounded by three-hundred-year-old Japanese cedars. Mix in steaming pools at a mystical cooking onsen, and you’ll get the idea: in Nozawa, nature’s everywhere. Unwind with some local gin (made with Nozawa’s own crystal-clear freshwater) and then hop into an onsen yourself to round out the afternoon with the crew in relaxing style. That evening, we’ll kick back in our traditional Ryokan (which has been around for 18 generations!) for mouthwatering local delicacies and umami flavors.

Meditating in Japan's gardens.

Day 6 - Nozawaonsen, Tokyo Nature to Nightlife

Breakfast is an authentic spread whipped up by our expert chef at the Ryokan, so eat up before you check out the rest of Nozawa.

Your morning’s free, and depending on the season, you could hike up into the hillsides to try out Shinrin-yoku, the therapeutic, near-spiritual practice of reconnecting with nature, or even hit Nozawa’s famous slopes for a morning of skiing with epic views. In the afternoon, catch a train and ride out of the mountains and into the neon future. Hello, Tokyo! Welcome to one of the largest, most exciting cities on earth, where the term “sensory overload” has never meant so much. Tokyo’s home to some of the world’s greatest nightlife, so drop your bags and then head to Golden Gai’s maze of tiny bars and restaurants for lantern-lit fun!

Fresh sushi on a bed of lettuce.

Day 7 - Tokyo

Taste of tokyo.

In the morning, you’ll head out with the crew to explore some of Tokyo’s most colorful neighborhoods and charming parks on a guided city tour. Then, after working in more than a few morning steps, it’s time to hit the kitchen for a real taste of the town—we’re going to learn how to roll up sushi as only Japanese do. Toss down some of Tokyo’s freshest tuna and then wander the streets with friends. That evening, we’ll all get together and head out to soak up the neon nightlife as we explore more of the city’s iconic nightlife, from tiny dives to karaoke hubs.

group travel for 30 year olds

Day 8 - Tok yo Kanpai!

Today's free for you to explore one of the most exciting cities on the planet with friends or solo. With everything from sumo wrestling to rocking J-Pop (looking at you, Babymetal), Tokyo’s always got something going on, so get out there and try to see it all. We highly recommend visiting Teamlab to experience the futuristic digital art exhibits. Alternatively, if you're after a bit more history, head over to the Imperial Palace to explore what was the ancient residence of Tokugawa shoguns and what's currently home to the emperor! In the evening, we'll share celebratory cocktails and dinner with the group as we say kanpai (cheers) to an awesome trip!

Neon lights on Tokyo streets.

Day 9 - Tokyo FAREWELL

Our Japan trip may be wrapping up, but there's always more Asia to see. We'll share one last breakfast with the group before we say farewell and head our separate ways. If you're sticking around these parts, consider grabbing a Japan rail pass to explore the rest of the country. For more variety, fly down to Vietnam and soak up history in Hanoi , or jet a bit farther south for more tropical rays and preposterously beautiful sunsets in Bali .

Tokyo has the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world!

While we can’t guarantee private rooms, you sho uld book your trip earlier if you prefer one, as they usually fill up.

Book your arrival flight into Kansai International Airport , or Osaka International Airport , and take public transportation to Kyoto; Book your departure flight out of Tokyo from either the  Narita International Airport or the Haneda International Airport .

In Japan, you'll find everything from hotel rooms to portion sizes to be smaller.

Public transportation: Japanese trains are very efficient, and traffic in the major cities is bad, so this whole trip is done on public transport. Try to pack lightly.

When visiting Japan, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small side, quirky, and unique (we love this!).

Cherry Blossom season usually falls between April and May.

June is the rainy season, but it usually does not rain every day

Seafood is a staple of Japanese cuisine and can be found in many dishes. If you are a selective eater, please be aware that meals will often include seafood.

Note for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free: In Japanese culture, foods without the actual meat of an animal (such as beef broths) are considered vegetarian. This may present difficulties for travelers with dietary restrictions, as it is hard to adjust foods or find foods that don't use grains or fish. While your guide can help you understand what you're ordering, it will be up to you to do your research on foods that meet your dietary preferences. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to find meals that fit your needs during the group meals that are included.

All activities are weather-dependent; in the unlikely event that we are unable to run an activity, we will have a suitable alternative in place.

More information regarding visa requirements and Covid restrictions can be found here .

about Japan

Japan is home to a rich cultural heritage steeped in tradition. Its history, spanning millennia, melds ancient practices with modern innovations. The nation reveres traditions like tea ceremonies, sumo wrestling, and cherry blossom festivals while also placing huge importance on cutting-edge technology and urban sophistication. Major cities pulse with energy, housing futuristic skyscrapers alongside historic temples.

GOod to know

The national language is Japanese.

The currency in Japan is the yen.

Everything is very, very small. Though cleverly designed, expect small spaces for accommodation.

Japan is one of the most expensive places to visit in the world, and therefore will not be a luxury trip, despite the higher costs.

Japanese cuisine is delicious, creative, and stunning, but it will definitely challenge your palette’s comfort zone.

Japanese culture is completely different from anything else you’ve experienced before; be ready to expand your horizons.

This trip will offer a mix of ancient and modern, old and new.

Manners are important in Japan and showing respect, as you would in any country.

It is generally a quieter country, despite bustling cities and tourist-heavy areas.

Fly into OSAKA (ITM) or Kansai (KIX)

You'll need to be in Kyoto by 2pm on Day 1. We do recommend flying in earlier to have some time to explore the city on your own!

Fly out of Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT)

Fly out of Tokyo at any time on day 9 or extend your trip and enjoy a few more days in Japan.

Want to check out flights for your trip?

Feel free to also set up flight alerts to Osaka and from Tokyo so you can grab the best deal!

*FTLO is not responsible for any fees or costs related to flights. We strongly suggest that all travelers wait until they receive the official FTLO Greenlight Email to book flights. This will be sent 3-4 months prior to the start date of your trip.

Solo Travel In Your 30s – here’s 5 alternatives to staying home

by Steven Dillon | Apr 26, 2019

group travel for 30 year olds

This post was written by Steve Dillon, founder of   Other Way Round , a group travel company specialising in adventure trips for 25-45 year olds. He’s passionate about encouraging fellow 30 somethings to give solo travel a try, and he shares 5 ways to go about it.

(or “vacations” for my North American friends).

If you’re anything like most people it’s what gets you through the day-to-day grind.

Looking forward to that next trip – the opportunity to relax, to disconnect, to experience something completely different.

It doesn’t get much better.

“Where are you going this year”?

If you would have asked me that when I was in my 20s I would have reeled off a list of upcoming trips with friends.

There was always something going on and the main challenge was finding the cash to get involved.

Group of 30 something solo travellers

But the first time it happened to me I had just turned 30…

I had resigned from my job and had managed to wangle a 1 week break before starting my next role.

I was in need of a break.

Desperate actually .

And I knew I would be useless at my next company without recharging my batteries first.

The problem – I couldn’t find anyone to go with.

At such short notice neither my girlfriend or friends could get the time from work and I was faced with the daunting prospect:

GO ALONE, OR DON’T GO AT ALL.

Solo travel trip in my 30s

Solo Travel in My 30s

As I’ve progressed through my 30s I’ve realised that this was just the start of things to come.

People get married, have kids, get saddled with huge mortgages.

It becomes near impossible to align schedules and finances with those closest friends.

If this sounds all too familiar, the good news is that you are not alone.

It is way more common than you think and many of us are facing the same challenge.

So what do you do?

You could decide to stay home and miss out (and sadly many people do).

But honestly, in this day and age it’s SO unnecessary.

“Solo Travel” is absolutely booming, especially for people in their 30s, and there are endless possibilities out there.

In this post I’m going to share with you 5 alternatives to staying home if you find yourself in a similar situation.

(See also:   Group Holidays for Solos Over 30 )

Solo travel with 30 something tour group

1. Hardcore Solo Travel

By this I mean really go all in and fully embrace the solo aspect of “solo travel”.

Plan out your own trip in full, based entirely on what YOU want to do.

There are SO MANY resources available online to help.

(some good places to start are Nomadic Matt , Adventurous Kate , Lonely Planet , Conde Nast Traveler but really if you just type your destination into Google you’ll find there’s a ridiculous wealth of information available).

Go where you want, when you want.

Don’t worry about pleasing anyone else.

Enjoy the time alone to think, get perspective on life, and renew your sense of purpose (sounds a bit cheesy I know, but it often happens).

Embrace the flexibility and freedom that comes with this option and after a while you may just wonder why you’ve never done it before.

It’s definitely character building stuff and you will likely emerge from such a trip with a new found level of resilience and independence which you can carry forth on into your daily life.

2. The Hybrid Approach to Travelling Alone

This combines the best of both worlds.

Again, plan your trip independently – book your own flights, accommodation, plan a rough itinerary etc… but put yourself in places where you are likely to meet other people along the way.

You could stay at a hostel where there’s likely to be a bunch of other travellers in their 30s sharing a similar mindset.

You could also book yourself onto day tours so you still get to go visit places with other people, but leave plenty of ‘alone time’ with the flexibility to venture off and do your own thing.

30 somethings singles holiday

Or you could even hook yourself up with a local and really get to know the place you’re visiting on a deeper level.

Platforms like Couchsurfing and Airbnb Experiences are great for connecting you with such locals for a more ‘authentic experience’.

The great thing with this approach is that you don’t have to plan too much in advance.

Most Hostels / Hotels / Airbnbs will have relationships with the local tour operators and you can typically just land, see what’s available and book something at the last minute.

3. Join an Online Travel Group

The internet is full of online communities (or travel groups) specifically catering to people in this very position – single people looking to travel solo.

They typically provide an abundance of useful information, in-depth resources and helpful tips for those thinking to travel alone.

And better still, some even organise trips which members can join.

Some great examples of such groups are:-

  • Solo Travel Society
  • Girls Gone International
  • Travelettes
  • Girls Love Travel

(these groups all also have huge social media followings)

Go search for something in your particular area of interest and you’re bound to find something that resonates with you.

(there are many which will specialise in bringing together singles in their 30s)

female solo travel in your 30s

4. Get Social

This is a bit more of a long game with regard to solo travel but in my opinion it’s one of the absolute best things you can do.

Here it is…

JOIN A SOCIAL CLUB IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

If you’re struggling to find friends to go on holiday with then chances are you’re also facing a similar challenge in your day-to-day life (and we all need someone to go grab a beer with on the weekend).

And yet the perfect solution is available to most of us within our local communities which typically have ‘social clubs’ for almost every interest out there.

Solo trip in my 30s hiking in Colombia

For example, in recent years I’ve been a member of the following clubs:-

  • RBS Football (London – football team)
  • One Element (London – outdoor fitness club)
  • Y Tri (Washington DC – triathlon club)
  • La Ruta Outdoor (Medellin – hiking club)

(yeah, I’ve gotten around a little)!

And without exception, in each of these communities I have met great friends, found people to hang out with on weekends and – most relevant to this blog – ended up going on HOLIDAY with other solo travellers from the group.

Sometimes it was part of an organised group trip (most social clubs do them) and other times just directly with friends I have met through these clubs.

And although these particular groups lean more towards the active side, you can bet there’s a group somewhere that covers you own personal area of interest whether that be music, dance, languages or whatever.

Go check out Meetup which is a great resource for finding such groups.

5. Go With a Tour Group

Last but not least is the option to join a tour group.

Now, I know that some people have the image of tour groups being a bit stuffy or rigid but these days there are definitely some WAY more modern versions out there.

(in fact check out this blog: Debunking 9 Myths About Small Group Tours )

Going back to the story I talked about in the intro – where none of my friends were available to holiday with me – I ended up ‘traveling solo’ for a week of ‘Spanish and Surf’ in Fuerteventura.

It was a fantastic trip, I met a bunch of fun people, and I got that much needed time to disconnect.

sailing during singles holiday for 30 somethings

Fast forward a couple of years and I joined another tour group called Medsailors for a week of ‘Sun and Sailing’ in Croatia (it was so good I went with them again to Greece the following year)!

Inspired so much by these awesome trips I then went on to create my very own tour company – Other Way Round – specialising in group tours for 30 and 40 somethings solo travellers.

These days there are tour groups for absolutely everything .

Whether you’re into yoga , skiing , meditation, dancing, hiking, biking, literature, museums, adventure or just want to party for two weeks – there’s an option out there for you.

Just type your interest and desired destination into Google and you’ll be spoilt with a bucket load of choices.

Colombia tour for single travellers in their 30s

The “Right Way” to Do Travelling Solo in Your 30s

SPOILER ALERT – there is no “right way” to do solo travel in your 30s.

There is no one size fits all.

For some people the thought of Option 1 (Hardcore Solo Travel) will fill them with dread while for others it will sound like paradise.

At the other end of the scale I know people who could think of nothing worse than going on a 2 week group tour with a bunch of “strangers” while for others it’s what they enjoy most.

It all comes down to what you’re more comfortable with as an individual and what better suits your personality.

Solo travellers in their 30s chatting in Colombia

I tend to lean more towards Option 4 (Social Clubs) and Option 5 (Tour groups).

I like meeting new people and sharing experiences together.

It always takes me a bit of time to get to know new people so I prefer spending a longer period with the same group rather than meeting new people every day.

I like the bond it creates within the group and usually find that on such trips the banter is the best part.

But that’s just me and everyone is different.

The most important takeaway here is that if you’re a solo traveller in your 30s there’s definitely an option out there for you. There’s no need to miss out.

With that in mind…

Hiking in Colombia with other solo travellers 30 years old

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE – Don’t Miss Out !

If I can get only one thin g across in this blog it is to tell you not to hold yourself back.

I’m extremely passionate about this subject because I see so many single travellers in their 30s missing out because they don’t take that initial first step .

Yes, it can be tricky.

Often awkward.

Eating at a restaurant alone.

Trying to make friends in a hostel when it feels like everyone else is travelling together.

Meeting up with a new tour group or social group for the first time when you don’t know anyone.

But if you push yourself through those initial moments of pain (torture for some I know) then you will open yourself up to a whole new world of possibilities.

Go on, give it a try!

The Best Trips to Take in Your 30s

Your 30s are a magical time. You're a fully formed adult, with all the responsibility that adulthood entails, but you might also have disposable income to spend. Thirty-year-olds "are not looking to save money necessarily, they're looking to spend it quickly," says Andrea Malis, a travel advisor with Comeback Odyssey Travel in Tuscon, Arizona, of her millennial clients. And since so many are pressed for time, it isn't uncommon for these travelers to pack as much as they can into a fairly short time frame. "In four days, they'll do what a retiree would take three weeks to do," Malis says.

With help from a handful of seasoned travel experts, we chose the best trips to take in your 30s, whether you're looking to sample fine Malbec, hike Machu Picchu , or clock in some spa time. Each offers rich opportunities for seeing the world—and yourself—from a wholly new vantage point.

"You have the wine region, but then you have the active component—hiking and biking," Comeback Odyssey Travel's Malis says of Argentina's attractions . Lisa Lindblad, owner of Lisa Lindblad Travel Design in New York City, agrees the geographically diverse country is "very outdoorsy" with its snow-capped mountains and dreamy coastlines. From the café culture of Buenos Aires to Patagonia's rainforests and Mendoza's mouth-watering parillas, Argentina travel offers a little something for everyone—especially food-loving millennials with a fondness for nature.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

"Belize is really popular, even just for four nights," says Lynda Turley of Alpine Travel in Saratoga, California. That's especially true among newlyweds, who want "to stay somewhere close to the U.S. but want to get away for a last hurrah before they're a bit more tied down." She recommends "staying part of the time at the beach for excellent snorkeling and diving, and then part of the time in the rainforest for the culture and nightlife." The beach at Turtle Inn, part of the Coppola family of resorts , is a favorite thanks to its plethora of water activities, including zip lining.

"You've got your chance to see the Northern Lights in winter; in summer, you've got endless days," Lindblad says. Best of all, the country is highly accessible, making it ideal for time-crunched travelers. "It sits so close to the East Coast, you can go on your way to England. Or for a long weekend, spend two or three days there, and then carry on or come home," she says. Though no one really stays in Reykjavik, Lindblad says Hotel Rangá is an attractive option. There are many well-positioned lodges, since, after all, "logistics is everything in Iceland."

For foodies and hikers alike, Marjorie Shaw, founder of Insider's Italy, based in Rome, recommends the stunning Amalfi coast and Trentino-Alto Adige in the far north. Amalfi is best in winter, when it's low season, but if you insist on going in summer, you'll be rewarded with hikes and "excursions to Greek temples and villas destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius," she says. Late spring to early autumn is best for Trentino-Alto Adige, as it borders Austria and Switzerland and offers an enticing array of cultures. In the largely German Alto Adige, Shaw says, you'll find "small Latin communities scattered throughout."

"Japan is everybody's passion these days, particularly among 30-somethings," says Lindblad. "It's expensive, but if they have disposable income, there is really something for everybody: food, design, clothes and architecture." Malis agrees: "Japan has a booming culinary scene beyond sushi and teppanyaki , which should not be missed. Add a fish market, whiskey or sake tour, and your trip would be amazing." Health nuts will flock to Kyoto's ryokans , Lindblad says, especially Beniya Mukayu in artsy Kanazawa, while rookies will appreciate the ease of the country's transportation system .

New Zealand

"New Zealand is huge with the 30-year-old market and adventure market," says Turley of Alpine Travel. The locally grown food is almost fully sustainable—think fresh water salmon, green-lipped mussels, cheeses, and pit fruit—and the wine is superb. " Wellington is a super-fun college town and great jumping-off point for seeing The Lord of the Rings filming locations," Turley says, while visiting Waiheke Island "is like going to Tiburon or Sausalito for the day in California." Just a two-hour ferry from Auckland, Waiheke is perfect for day trips to wineries like Miro Vineyard or overnight stays at one of the many cute boutique hotels.

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

"Peru is a really achievable destination for somebody in their 30s," Malis says, because the airfare is reasonable. There's the allure of fulfilling a bucket list item (the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu ), and since millennials like to be rewarded for their efforts, they can chow down post-hike at one of the fancy Relais & Chateaux properties. Speaking of hiking, it doesn't get much better than the historic Plaza de Armas in Cusco, Sacsayhuamán, the "Stonehenge of the Andes," or the mother of all Inca trails, Machu Picchu.

" Portugal is a great value, especially with the dollar being so strong," says Turley, who's worked with many clients in their 30s. "It's half the price of Spain to start out with," and it fits the millennial bill thanks to its serious wine culture. "If they're not spending a lot of money in Lisbon , they can blow a little in the Duoro Valley in the north," the world's first designated wine region, Lindblad says. Dropping a few euros on Six Senses , a luxurious 19th-century manor house overlooking the vine-covered hills, isn't a bad idea either.

South Africa

Going back to the idea of accomplishing a lot in a short time frame, Malis says " South Africa is an amazing place for people to go visit," as "you have the ocean experience, where you can shark dive" and the ability to enjoy a couple of nights in the Cape Winelands , the country's mountainous answer to Napa Valley. For history buffs, Johannesburg offers themed walking tours to unlock the city's history and get a bit closer to Nelson Mandela, while the recent opening of Four Seasons Westcliff will suit a luxury-minded crowd in need of a spa treatment after a safari.

For those in search of tropical climates free from the threat of Zika, the largest island in French Polynesia is a wonderful option, Turley says. Of course, whether you go will depend on your budget since airfare doesn't come cheap. If you can swing it, Turley highly recommends The Brando resort, an eco-friendly oasis tucked 45 minutes away on the private island of Tetiaroa. "It used to belong to Marlon Brando, and it's been opened as a resort," she explains. "And again, it's got everything: excellent food and wine, all included; all your wellness is there."

South America's buzzy hotspot is super accessible, Lindblad says, especially for those coming east from Buenos Aires. From there, a roughly four-hour ferry-and-bus ride gets you to Montevideo, where you can enjoy a relaxing stroll on the white-sand beaches; visit Ciudad Vija, the city's oldest neighborhood; or hit one of the many bars and nightclubs, where tango performances are a lively tradition. Montevideo is best in October, when the temperatures ease up and average rainfall takes a nosedive. But perhaps the most alluring aspect, Lindblad says, is that you won't need a tour guide.

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

An absolute blast from start to finish! The schedule was well paced, every location is stunning, the hostels are decent, the Loch Ness one in particular has some lovely hosts. Neil, our guide, is very knowledgable and constantly dropped awesome lore on top of some banging jokes. I got lucky with the timing as the weather was unusually clear except for the last day, while still cold enough to see snow (lost my snow virginity!!) and avoid the midgies. Oh I got to see the highland coos up close too. Can’t recommend this tour enough as your first experience with Scotland!

The highlight of our year so far! ???? Me and my partner loved the Central Europe Tour ????(2 weeks), we would recommend it to ANYONE! And we would even suggest doing the Whole of Europe tour (4 weeks), as we could have easily carried on travelling with this company and the amazing people we met! ????The whole trip was thoroughly planned and so enjoyable! Such a stress free experience, especially for someone like myself who gets quite anxious when travelling - I would 100% do again!???????? I met some incredible individuals, and the group planned activities were just what we needed to establish really strong bonds straight away! We have definitely made some lifelong friends and memories we will forever cherish! ???????????? The creation of the WhatsApp group chat with all our fellow travellers beforehand was so beneficial!???? It broke the ice and put our minds at ease about the uncertainty of the upcoming trip ???? And our guide Cristina ???? - was brilliant, super friendly, helpful, considerate and extremely knowledgeable - educating us all. She was available 24/7, and we had the pleasure of spending our last day in Venice with her! ???????????? She deserves a lot of credit for making all our experiences amazing and unforgettable! Thank you Cristina ???????? We look forward to our future bookings with Euroventure! ????????

Mamma Mia! - 13 Days/12 Nights Tour

Mamma Mia! - 13 Days/12 Nights

I’m not the one to leave bad reviews, but the process leading up to the tour was nothing but stressful. A week before the tour, the itinerary was changed on me three times, and that’s after booking my train and bus rides. Some I couldn’t refund and I’m left with flixbus vouchers. They were very apologetic and I can understand how difficult it is to coordinate tours and somethings don’t exactly go how you want. Once the tour started, it was amazing. The tour managers really made this experience great and they are all very knowledgeable even some are not from Italy, they still possess that passion for the Italian history, arts, food, and culture. I mean who wouldn’t, Italy is a dream! And the people you meet along the way, I don’t regret booking this tour and yes the beginning wasn’t as I had hoped but the events after made up for it ????. Anastasia, Julia, Ned, Antonio, and Federico were amazing! Grazie Mille! Til next time, Italy!

Reaching your golden years doesn't mean your adventures have to end. In fact, in this stage of life, you'll hopefully have more time and resources to travel. But as a senior citizen, you'll want to ensure you have travel insurance that covers any health-related issues arise while you travel.

Our top picks for the best senior travel insurance

  • Best overall: Allianz Travel Insurance
  • Best for expensive trips: John Hancock Travel Insurance
  • Best for exotic trips: World Nomads Travel Insurance

Best for annual plans: Travel Guard

How we rate the best senior travel insurance companies »

Compare travel insurance for seniors

Your health gets more unpredictable as you age, which makes travel insurance more important for seniors. Unfortunately, it's also more expensive. The best travel insurance for seniors won't have too steep of a price hike compared to rates for younger travelers. It will have high coverage limits for emergency medical coverage, trip cancellations, and and emergency medical evacuation. It's also important that your travel insurance offers pre-existing condition waivers , ideally at no extra cost to the traveler.

Here are our picks for the best travel insurance coverage for seniors in 2024.

Best overall: Allianz

Allianz Allianz Travel Insurance

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Good option for frequent travelers thanks to its annual multi-trip policies
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Doesn't increase premium for trips longer than 30 days, meaning it could be one of the more affordable options for a long trip
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Some plans include free coverage for children 17 and under
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Concierge included with some plans
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Coverage for medical emergency is lower than some competitors' policies

  • Single and multi-trip plans available
  • Trip cancellation and interruption coverage starting at up to $10,000 (higher limits with more expensive plans)
  • Preexisting medical condition coverage available with some plans

Allianz Travel Insurance is one of the most widely recognized names in travel insurance, and it stands out as one of the top travel insurance providers for seniors. It offers a wide range of policies covering medical treatments overseas and emergency medical transport.

Allianz also provides options for varying trip lengths. Its annual multi-trip policies , for example, cover any trip you make during your policy period, even if they aren't yet planned, making it an excellent option for seniors who vacation multiple times per year.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.
