facebook-share

The agents gained insights on memories of innumerable natural and architectural wonders complimented by luxury and culinary offerings

Visit Hungary, the official tourism board for the nation, recently organised the first familiarisation trip for the Indian travel trade partners. The debut project was aimed at showcasing leisure and MICE offerings in mainly Budapest and beyond.

In a press statement, Hungary Tourism Board says the trip was organised in association with tourism marketing agency Brandit and hosted representatives of six travel firms including Axplore, Harmony Tours, Varun WorldWide, Kesari, FCM, and Trawell Stories from December 4-9. The Indian agents travelled through notable cities to gain insights into attractions tailor made for leisure and MICE segments.

The statement adds that the trip began with a visit to the Etyek Wine City on the outskirts of Budapest. Members of the trade fraternity indulged in a wine-tasting experience here and learned about Hungarian wine making traditions. The journey continued to the House of Music, a contemporary cultural landmark where they discovered Hungary’s musical heritage. The day culminated in a lavish dinner on the Danube cruise.

It was followed by a meeting with Hungarian travel companies enabling the attendees to gain a nuanced knowledge of leisure activities, MICE facilities, and lesser-known facets of this European nation. The group also visited the famous Lake Balaton and Tihany Abbey, known for its architecture.

The journey concluded with an excursion to Balatonfüred, a charming lakeside town and a walking tour of Veszprém. The board adds that the agents gained insights on memories of innumerable natural and architectural wonders complimented by luxury and culinary offerings that make Hungary a versatile year-round destination.

Dear Visitor,

On behalf of all my Colleagues may I heartily welcome you at the website of the Consulate General of Hungary in Mumbai.

We all feel honoured to be given the chance of contributing to the economic, cultural, touristic and people-to-people cooperation between our countries in the economic and financial centre as well as in the Western and Southern States of India which constitute the main drivers of the fastest growing major economy of the world.

By the end of the first decade of the 21st century the establisment of a Mumbai based, full fledged Hungarian diplomatic mission with jurisdiction over Western and Southern India was fully substantiated by the increasing trade, the rapidly growing stock of Indian investments in Hungary, the strong increase in the number of Indian middle class travelers wishing to visit Hungary and generally by the opening of India for and towards the rest of the world. The new foreign policy strategy of the Hungarian Government, aimed at forging close cooperation with the growth centers of the world and establishing stronger presence in overseas markets under the aegis of the Opening to the East and Opening to the South strategies not just makes it possible but expressly encourages the establishment of new Hungarian diplomatic representations. All of the above led to the opening of the Consulate General of Hungary in Mumbai in 2014.

All members of the Consulate General in Mumbai are pleased to assist every effort aimed at deepening the economic, cultural, touristic and people-to-people contacts and strengthening the overall relationship between Hungary and India. We stand ready to support the cooperation between institutions, companies and citizens of our two countries, we are eager to assist Hungarian companies wanting to enter the Indian market, facilitate interactions in tourism and film industry, promote cooperation in higher education and enhance the visibility of Hungarian culture in India. It is our major commitment and responsibility to provide swift and efficient consular services within the geographical perimeters of our consular district and to protect and represent the interests of Hungarian citizens, natural and legal entities.

May I request you to contact us with all issues and concerns you may want us to address within the area of responsibility of the Consulate General of Hungary in Mumbai.

Safety and Security

Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad, including in Europe. For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime: Although Hungary is generally a safe place to visit, you should use caution and stay alert. Be especially careful in crowded tourist areas, train stations, buses, trams, and metros.

Passports, cash, and credit cards are favorite targets of thieves. The Embassy regularly receives reports of pickpocketing on the trains between Budapest and Vienna, so please be especially mindful of your belongings when traveling this route. There have been some instances in Budapest where U.S. citizens were overcharged exorbitant prices for food, beverages, or taxi services. Always verify the cost before making a purchase.

There have been incidents, although rare, where U.S. citizens were unknowingly drugged. Do not accept food or drink from anyone but a server. Additionally, the Embassy has received reports of racially motivated assaults. Please report all crimes to the local police. In an emergency dial 112 for help and contact the U.S. Embassy for follow-up assistance.

General tips to avoid becoming a victim of crime:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not walk alone at night.
  • Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
  • Stay alert in crowded locations frequented by tourists.
  • Always keep your belongings secure.

Demonstrations: Political gatherings and protests occur frequently in Hungary, mostly in Budapest. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events. Ethnic nationalist groups have gained popularity in Hungary in the past years, in some cases advocating intolerance towards migrants and minorities, including Jews, Roma, and LGBTI+ individuals. Although these far-right groups do not engage in violence and are not explicitly anti-United States, you should avoid public demonstrations and confrontations with their members.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable, avoid areas around protests and political rallies.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
  • In a few instances where demonstrations have turned violent, authorities have used riot police to control crowds.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

International Financial Scams: See the  Department of State  and   FBI webpages for information.

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally well-regulated and rules enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is generally available throughout the country. Outside of major metropolitan centers, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Always carry your passport with you in Hungary. Local police may require you to show documentation to establish your identity upon request. Hungarian police may take you into custody if you attempt to prove your identity with documents other than a passport.
  • Hungary has a zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Penalties are severe, including significant jail time.

Some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Special Circumstances regarding Banking and Customs:

  • Travelers’ checks are not universally accepted in Hungary. ATMs are readily available.
  • It is not possible to cash personal checks in Hungary without a local bank account, which requires residency.
  • Western Union is the most prevalent international money transfer company and has many locations throughout Hungary. You must have photo identification to receive a wire transfer.
  • Visit the National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary for information about import and export of potentially restricted items.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report – see country report
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Hungary. However, organizers may encounter disruptive behavior by far-right wing extremists at events supporting the LGBTQI+ community.

See our LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights Report for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Hungary prohibits discrimination against persons with physical or mental disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility issues may include accessible facilities and ease of movement. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, and general infrastructure. There can be a significant difference in accessibility between Budapest and the rest of the country.

For emergency services in Hungary dial:

  • 104 for Ambulance Services
  • 107 for the Police
  • 105 for the Fire Department
  • 112 for English-Speaking Emergency Responders (All Types of Emergencies)

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Ambulance services are widely available in Hungary, but training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards. All ambulances may not be equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Adequate health facilities are available in the capital and other major cities, but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards. Medical staff may speak little or no English. Generally, in public hospitals only minimal staff is available overnight in non-emergency wards. Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Some hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is not always available. Some private clinics and hospitals may require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient. Travelers should make efforts to obtain complete information on billing, pricing, and proposed medical procedures before agreeing to any medical care. Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Prescription Medication: Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of Hungary to ensure the medication is legal in Hungary. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. Prescription and over-the-counter medicines are widely available at pharmacies.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy: If you are considering traveling to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page . Hungarian law forbids surrogacy arrangements.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Roadside assistance, including medical and other services, is available. Dial 112 to speak to English-speaking emergency operators.

Highways and urban roads are generally in good condition. As in most European countries, you must pay a toll to use Hungary’s highways. Payments must be made either at a gas station or online .

  • Areas under construction are not always adequately marked.
  • Be on the alert when driving in rural areas. Rural roads are often narrow and poorly lit.
  • Pedestrians, tractors, and farm animals often share the use of rural roads.
  • Train crossings are not always well-designated.

Additional information on road conditions is available from “ Útinform ” at +36-1-336-2400.

Traffic Laws: Hungary has zero tolerance for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs. Prison sentences for DUI violations or accidents caused by impaired drivers are severe.

  • Police often conduct routine roadside checks and administer breath-analysis tests.
  • Police stop vehicles regularly to check documents.
  • Use of hand-held cell phones while driving is not permitted.
  • Car seats are required for infants.
  • Children under the age of 12 may not sit in the front seat.
  • Seat belt use is mandatory.
  • You can drive in Hungary with a valid U.S. driver’s license for one year as long as you have a certified Hungarian translation of the license attached. After one year of residence, you must obtain a Hungarian driver’s license.
  • International driver’s permits (IDP) issued by the American Automobile Association (AAA) are acceptable when used with a valid state driver’s license.

Hungarian police issue traffic violations in the form of a postal check that reflects the amount of the fine. You may pay the fines at any Hungarian post office. Police will confiscate the passport of a person who chooses to contest the fine and issue the person an “invitation letter” to appear at the police station to resolve the dispute. Police will return the passport after resolution and/or payment of the fine.

Public Transportation: Public transportation in Budapest is excellent. Budapest’s tram, subway, and bus service are reliable. Find more information online: Budapest Public Transport . Public transportation outside of Budapest is not as dependable.

  • To avoid being a subject to on-the-spot fines in public transportation, you must follow rules for purchasing and properly validating your ticket.
  • Taxis in Budapest are plentiful and generally inexpensive. All taxis are yellow, marked accordingly, and should have meters. The Embassy urges all travelers to insist on using a metered taxi, and to avoid entering into agreements with taxi drivers to an unmetered fare.
  • Hungary’s train service is generally reliable. The Embassy regularly receives reports of pickpocketing on the trains between Budapest and Vienna. Be mindful of your belongings when traveling this route.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Hungary’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Hungary’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Can Indians Get a Hungary Visa on Arrival?

No, unfortunately, the Hungary visa on arrival for Indians is not available. To visit Hungary, Indian citizens are generally required to obtain a visa in advance, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free entry into the country.

Applying for a Schengen Visa at a Hungarian Diplomatic Mission:

Single Country Visit:

If Hungary is your only Schengen destination and where you'll first enter, apply at the Hungarian consulate.

Visiting Multiple Schengen Countries:

  • If you're visiting several Schengen countries and plan to stay longer in Hungary, apply at a Hungarian consulate.
  • If you're visiting multiple Schengen countries with similar stays, like tourism in Hungary, Germany, and France, apply at the consulate of your first entry country, which would be Hungary in this scenario.

Main Purpose of Visit:

Your main reason for visiting determines where you apply. If it's not clear or if you're visiting multiple countries, submit your application to the embassy or consulate of your first entry point to the Schengen area.

For example, if your main purpose is attending a conference in Hungary while touring multiple countries, apply at the Hungarian consulate.

Short stay uniform visa (C-type): This visa allows the holder to make single, double, or multiple entries, permitting a continuous stay of up to 90 days. Alternatively, for interrupted stays, the total duration should not exceed 90 days within a 180-day period, calculated from the date of the initial entry.

When seeking a Schengen C-type uniform short-stay visa, the intended reasons for entry can encompass various purposes, including tourism, business activities, engagement in sports, participation in cultural events, or visiting family and friends.

D Type Long Term Resident Permit: Individuals who are nationals and/or residents of India must obtain a residence permit if they intend to live in Hungary for a period exceeding 90 days.

Please be aware that the application for a residence permit must be submitted in person at the Hungarian Embassy and typically involves an interview. Third parties are not permitted to submit the application on behalf of the applicant.

If necessary, a designated representative can collect the passport and the decision on the residence permit application, provided they present an authorised letter signed by the applicant and duly certified by a public notary.

Airport Transit Visa: With an airport transit visa, you can pass through the international transit zones of the issuing country and other countries mentioned on the visa sticker. If your connecting flight is booked under the same reservation number, you don't have to leave the transit zone, you don't need an airport transit visa.

Yes, Indian citizens applying for a Hungary visa must have travel medical insurance. Since Hungary is part of the Schengen Area, travel insurance is a requirement.

Here are the important details to consider before availing a Travel insurance for Schengen visa:

  • Minimum Protection: Ensure you have coverage of at least €30,000 (Euros) for medical expenses if you get sick or have an accident while travelling in Hungary.
  • Recommended Benefits: Look for plans that cover hospital stays, returning home, emergency medical transportation, and other unexpected travel troubles.
  • Indian Insurance Providers: Check out offerings from trusted companies like Tata AIG, Digit Insurance, HDFC Ergo, and others to find a policy that fits what you need and can afford.
  • Incorrect or Fake Documents: Submitting untrue or altered documents can result in rejection. Always make sure the documents are genuine and meet all Hungary visa requirements for Indian citizens.
  • Inconsistent Travel Plans: If the details in your application, such as your itinerary or proof of accommodation, don't match your intended trip, it may raise suspicions and lead to denial.
  • Insufficient Financial Evidence: It's important to show enough funds, like at least Euro 50 to Euro 150 per day per person. Also, ensure you have a bank balance of INR 3,00,000 before applying for a Hungary visa.
  • Unconvincing Purpose of Visit: If visa officers doubt the genuineness of your reasons for visiting Hungary, such as concerns about potential overstaying, your application might be turned down.
  • Limited Travel History: Lack of previous travel experience, particularly for frequent travellers or specific visa types, could raise doubts and lead to rejection.
  • Damaged Passport: A passport in poor condition, with tears, missing pages, or expired validity, can be grounds for rejection. Make sure your passport is valid and in good condition.

Financial documentation issues can cause visa rejections. Ensure your bank statements and income proof reflect a minimum balance of INR 3,00,000 per person for a stronger application.

Every applicant is entitled to exercise their right to appeal in case their application or visa is refused, annulled, or revoked. Here are the key steps in the appeal process:

  • The appeal must be submitted in person, either by the applicant or by an individual holding a power of attorney on behalf of the applicant, at the Consular and Visa Section of the Hungarian Embassy.
  • The appeal must be lodged within eight (8) calendar days from the date of receiving the decision or within three (3) calendar days if it pertains to the annulment or revocation of a visa.
  • The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will make a decision on regular appeals within 15 days, while appeals against decisions related to the annulment or revocation of a visa will be decided upon within 5 days.
  • The appeal should be presented in writing and must bear the signature of the applicant or the authorised representative. The appeal fee must be paid when submitting the appeal and is non-refundable, even if the decision is favourable.
  • There is no possibility to reduce the appeal fee, and it applies to all applicants, including those who were eligible for a fee waiver during the initial application process. The appeal must be submitted in either Hungarian or an official language of the European Union. If the appeal is filed in another language, an official translation must be provided.
  • During the appeal process, the applicant or their representative may submit additional supporting documents, and there may be a provision for a personal visa interview at the consulate. The appeal judgement can potentially be subject to judicial review. In the event of a refusal, a new application can be submitted at any time, but the visa fee will need to be paid again.

Rather than appealing a visa denial, which can take a long time, it's usually faster and easier to just apply again. This method gives you another opportunity to get the visa without waiting for the outcome of an appeal.

When figuring out whether an airport transit visa (ATV) is required for Hungary, it's crucial to consider two different situations:

  • Staying within the international transit zone of an airport: This implies you stay inside the airport's international transit zone without leaving it. For instance, if your connecting flight is under the same booking reference, there's no need to leave the transit area, hence no transit visa is needed.
  • Passing through a Member State's territory at an airport: This case involves exiting the international transit zone of the airport.

Possessing an Airport Transit Visa allows you to move through the international transit area of a Hungarian airport while waiting for your onward flight to a country outside the Schengen area. Nevertheless, this visa doesn't allow you to enter the Schengen zone, such as going to a hotel or taking a flight to another Schengen country.

  • Prepare Your Travel Documents: Make sure to have your passport, valid Hungary visa (if required), return ticket, and hotel reservations ready for inspection by immigration officials upon arrival. Having these documents readily available will expedite the immigration process and ensure a smooth entry into Hungary.
  • Unaccompanied Minor Guidelines: If you're travelling alone as a minor, it's essential to stick close to your designated flight attendant for safety throughout your journey. Upon arrival, identify your assigned adult contact at the destination airport to ensure a secure and hassle-free arrival experience.
  • Understand Hungary's Regulations: Familiarise yourself with Hungary's customs regulation s before arrival. If you have items to declare or if your baggage needs inspection, proceed to the customs area accordingly. Being aware of the customs procedures will help avoid any potential complications during the arrival process.

By following these steps and staying informed about Hungary's entry requirements and regulations, you can ensure a seamless and stress-free arrival experience at the Hungary airport.

In summary, as outlined in this guide, getting a visa for Hungary can be a relatively easy process. Make sure you fulfil the specific Hungary visa requirements for Indian citizens related to your travel plans.
