Richmond rapper Iamsu! hasn’t performed his own live show since 2019 — when the pre-pandemic world felt limitless and more socially manageable. But now, fresh off a guest appearance in Oakland at Larry June’s “The Great Escape” tour, Iamsu! is back on our minds with an upcoming concert of his own: IAMSUMMER Fest .

For Su, a founding member of the rap collective Heartbreak Gang, the time feels right to finally re-emerge after a pandemic-triggered hiatus.

“Once I got settled into the pandemic, it was tough to crack the shell to come out,” he says. “It feels hella good to be back out in this space and picking my right spots, having the right homies to work with and just being intentional about it. It’s a real summer jam .”

The concert takes place at California’s Great America , the amusement park that invokes heavy nostalgia for many Bay Area natives, including Su, who grew up riding favorites like Top Gun, Drop Zone and The Demon.

“As a young boy, the experience of going through those gates, seeing the fountains, eating churros, that just puts a smile on my face,” Iamsu! says. “That magic, that fun, it’s not always present in the Bay these days. It’s just a small escape from our regular lives.”

Iamsu! will be joined by fellow Heartbreak Gang artists Kool John , Skipper, Show Banga, Dave Steezy, CJ, DJ Shell and other “surprise” guests. Also on hand will be Iamsu!’s favorite food trucks and brands, such as Lily Mae’s House of Soul Food , Oakland Roots, Fundraisers , and San Francisco rapper Lil Bean’s Beno World .

In previous summers, the concert has rotated venues. But by bringing it to Santa Clara’s theme park, Su says, this year’s event is about family fun, childhood memories and being outside again.

“I have memories of being terrified of those rides,” Su admits. “Sometimes you’d wanna bail the line at the end! It’s that mixture of fun and insane anxiety. But you feel like ‘him’ once you get off. I want to bring that feeling back. Shout out Great America and the amusement parks in the Bay, for real.”

IAMSU! Releases Bouncy EP, "Out The Blue"

The Richmond, California native gifted fans with one more project before the end of the year.

California rapper IAMSU! is closing 2022 with four new tracks on his recently released EP, Out The Blue . On these cuts, the Cali MC maintains a solid sense of bounce and rhythm that oozes with the Coast. Moreover, these summery tracks followed a run of new albums and projects this year. On them, he showcased a knack for charismatic bars and a sense of fun that came through on his "Lemon Pepper Freestyle" remix.

When it comes to this EP's sound, IAMSU! employed two main styles, each for two tracks. "Bounce" and "Fake Love" are more trap-influenced, synthy cuts with a lot of melodic vocal runs. Moreover, the timbres and sounds he chose to play with give the project a particularly spacey sound. Also, the synths and melodies provide a rubbery backdrop for Su's constant flow. In fact, it might remind listeners of earlier tracks like "Cartier Lens." In addition, Isthatcj and Dave Steezy spit alongside Su with ease on their respective cuts.

Meanwhile, "Always Rep" and "Ride To" are more in line with the West Coast bounce you'd expect. Show Banga and Skipper respectively give solid performances and IAMSU! takes advantage of faster flows. Like his previous output, including "1300 Stars," the instrumentation and rhythm places it firmly on the Westside. However, between these two tracks, the former is more melodic while the latter is more raw.

Even when the sound is locked in, there's still some nice variety to find within. Of course, IAMSU! plays with a couple of different sounds here and there, so the spread is nothing new. However, it would mean little if his performances and pen game weren’t comfortably matching each track’s energy. For IAMSU!, that’s not a problem.

Iamsu!, the 25-year-old producer and rapper with a mop afro and playful laugh, enjoys the challenge of bridging two worlds. Known both for his grounded storytelling and command of West Coast party music’s slapping palette, he’s a thoughtful introvert and high-energy leader all in one. Along with his crew HBK Gang, he’s offering listeners a new brand of positive, pro-individuality rap that might be mistaken for preachy if it weren’t so fun.

Iamsu! learned to make beats as a teen at Youth Radio, an Oakland nonprofit where he studied with hyphy hitmaker Trackademicks  and tutored other kids. Eventually he and HBK Gang, now a 16-man crew, started holing up in HBK producer Chief’s basement studio, spending hours collaborating around a Pro Tools-rigged PC. Su credits the confidence of his recordings to the HBK guys, who created a comfortable environment where he could experiment with his raspy flow and expand his sound. “I’m hella shy, but not when we’re around each other. I’m more experimental with my style over there,” he explains.

From HBK’s humble mini-studio, Su has contributed to surprisingly wide-reaching songs, like “Function,” last Summer’s feel-goofy anthem with E-40, YG and Problem, Wiz Khalifa’s “Bout Me” and LoveRance’s “Up,” the spare sex ode Su produced and guest emceed on. “Up” shows Su’s talent for writing straightforward, easy-to-lock-into hooks, but he’s prouder of the detailed production and carefully arranged melodies on 2012’s introspective Kilt tape, where he boasts about being trustworthy, staying independent ( “2 Milli” ) and making honest money ( “Mama I Made It” ). “When I first started rapping, I tried to talk about hood shit and it was a flop,” he says. “I rap for people that wanna enjoy themselves and chill out. I make music for girls to get dressed to. Ultimately, it makes the most sense for me to be myself.”

Su was the executive producer for his independently released studio album,  Sincerely Yours,   which debuted on ADA/Warner Music Group.  The album was subsequently hailed as one of the best hip hop albums of 2014 by Rolling Stone . His four recent tapes ( Kilt , bass-centric $uzy 6 $peed and Jay Ant collaboration Stoopid in 2012; Million Dollar Afro with rising LA rapper Problem in 2013) have spawned approachable street anthems like “Mobbin,” and a “100 Grand” remix with Juvenile, catching the attention of West Coast fans and national tastemakers alike. Stereogum named $uzy it’s Mixtape of the Week and SPIN ranked Su as one of this past June’s Best New Artists. He was nominated for XXL’s 2013 Freshman List and profiled in The FADER ’s 2013 Spring Style issue. He continues to generate new material, in the interest of delivering the best possible product to fans new and old. “I don’t focus on the things that I’ve already done, I always think about what’s next and how I can elevate myself,” he says. “I want to inspire people through that energy. I feel like I was put here to connect people.”

We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes.
