The two cruiser series returns with few changes, mainly new colors and prices.

indian cruise motorcycle

Indian Motorcycle delivered some exciting news regarding its 2023 FTR line earlier this week, but it looks like the brand’s Scout models are rolling into the new model year without any significant updates. The company’s 2022 cruiser lineup heralded the debut of two new models, the Rogue and the Rogue Sixty, earlier this year , but for 2023, it looks like business as usual.

The Best Cruiser Motorcycles On The Market

' width=

By: Tim Huber Published: Jun 14, 2023

Drawing ample inspiration from US-built motorcycles of yesteryear, cruisers have long been the most popular and best-selling bike style on North American shores—the world’s  largest motorcycle market . In a bid to cater to the US and Canada’s cruiser-centric customer base, major manufacturers have pored an enormous amount of resources into the development, manufacturing, and marketing of their respective cruiser bike lineups.

And while this has resulted in a buyer’s market that’s been flooded with increasingly capable and competitively-priced two-wheeled wares, the sheer number of available makes and models in the cruiser space can make shopping for a ride in the segment rather daunting. So, with this in mind, we’ve rolled back the last few years of model releases in this space to deliver this guide on the best cruiser motorcycles. In addition to counting down our picks for the latest and greatest available offerings in the sector, we’ll also be exploring what to look for and consider when shopping, along with a brief dive into the history of the cruiser genre and what qualities and factors make them unique.

The History Of Cruiser Motorcycle Style

As the motorcycle came into being, the industry evolved at a rapid rate, giving way to increasingly sophisticated and high-performance two-wheeled offerings. The main genres of motorcycles would evolve as well, and from the 1940s through 1960s, different regions would begin cementing their own respective styles and interpretations of bikes, including the US, with its golden-era big-bore V-Twin age, thanks to models from manufacturers like Crocker, Indian, Excelsior, and Harley-Davidson.

US-based motorcycle companies would not only employ these designs throughout the mid-1900s but said designs would also go on to serve as much of the visual inspiration for the lion’s share of production motorcycles that were subsequently released—a trend that remains to this day and one that has afforded American-made motorcycles their own highly-distinctive appearance. Alongside cruiser bike’s relaxed riding position, ample torque, and conduciveness to touring, their quintessentially American aesthetics play a large role in distinguishing the genre from other styles of bike and represent a major selling point for throngs of bikers. That’s not to say that overseas manufacturers haven’t attempted to emulate the style, or put their own unique spin on the genre, though as a whole, cruisers are American at heart.

A Cruiser’s Crown Jewel

Cruiser Motorcycles & V-Twin Engines

In the early pioneering days of the American motorcycle industry, manufacturers were primarily utilizing relatively primitive air-cooled single-cylinder powertrains, though, in 1906, Indian unleashed the first American V-Twin model with a 39ci 42° lump, just one year before releasing the first US-made V-Twin production model (and three years before Harley would unveil its first V-Twin with its own 45° 49.5ci mill in 1909). In the decades that followed, a variety of American brands —including Indian—would experiment with using other engine configurations, though the 1907 Indian-Built V-Twin became the archetype for American motorcycles.

Today V-Twin engines are synonymous with US-made cruiser motorcycles, boasting a distinctive look that serves as the crown jewel and centerpiece of practically every production cruiser and offering an easily-identifiable and highly-distinct deep, throaty, and rumbling exhaust note. What’s more, these large-displacement V-Twins play a pivotal role in the overall riding experience of American cruisers, with their ample low-end grunt and firmly planted ride. In more recent years, foreign motorcycle companies have introduced cruiser models kicked along by other engine configurations , though even most of these are just variations on the longitudinally-mounted V-Twin such as Ducati’s L-Twin-powered Diavel (and XDiavel) and Moto Guzzi’s cruiser’s transversally-mounted V-Twin bikes.

Cruiser Types

The Five Main Sub-Genres Within The Cruiser Class

Though every model on this list falls under the cruiser umbrella, there are in fact a handful of different styles of motorcycle within the segment. To help shine a light on those differences, we’ve broken down the cruiser class into its five main categories—each of which we’ll briefly touch on directly below.

Entry-Level: As the name of this sub-genre suggests, entry-level models are more accessibly-priced, less-well-optioned, and more novice-friendly takes on cruiser bikes. At least by American cruiser standards, these models have smaller-displacement engines that are more manageable for beginner riders .

Tourer: While they don’t necessarily lend themselves to urban-riding or commuting duties touring bikes are perfect for gobbling up miles on the open road. Powered by large engines, sporting a long wheelbase, and well-planted and highly-stable due to their immense weight, touring models are ideal for motorcycle road-trips and other long-distance applications.

Bagger: Also referred to as “dressers,” baggers are an instantly-recognizable sub-genre of cruisers that sport large fairings, hard luggage, a generously-sized passenger pillion. Like touring models, baggers are also incredibly conducive to long-range travel—an area furthered by the wealth of amenities typically found on baggers such as heated grips, cruise control, and onboard infotainment, stereo, and GPS navigation systems.

Hyper-Cruiser: Hyper-cruiser models are a style of cruiser bike that’s been engineered from the ground up to afford markedly higher-performance than your average cruiser. These high-performance offerings offer more lean angle, better acceleration and cornering, and are often equipped with componentry that’s regularly reserved for sport and superbike models .

Electric: Despite only being comprised of a few production models thus far, electric cruisers almost certainly represent the next big thing in the cruiser realm. Even though they lack the mighty rumble and bark of a traditional petrol-powered V-Twin, electric powertrains still maintain their similarly ample amounts of low-end torque. The emerging EV cruiser class also tends to feature the most cutting-edge technology of any sub-genre on this list.

Starting Small

Why New Riders & Big-Bore Cruisers Do NOT Mix

You wouldn’t want to learn to drive behind the wheel of a Ford F-250 Super Duty or any other massive pickup , and in a similar vein, you almost certainly shouldn’t be beginning your riding career on a full-size cruiser. With even entry-level models sporting roughly liter-sized engines and curb weights exceeding 500lbs, cruisers simply aren’t very conducive to new riders. With gobs of power and half-the-heft of a Fiat 500, cruisers can be exceedingly unforgiving and difficult to control, making them arguably one of, if not the worst possible choice for inexperienced riders.

Starting out on a cruiser that’s too big and/or powerful isn’t just dangerous either, it will impede your growth as a rider and will make the lion’s share of your experience in the saddle an utterly nerve-wracking one—something that may turn you off from riding altogether. If you’ve still got your heart set on kicking off your two-wheeled career on a cruiser, the good news is that today’s market includes a slew of beginner-friendly cruiser models. These bikes feature smaller engines and more svelte curb weights, while still boasting the outward appearance of a traditional cruiser. Once you’ve developed your riding technique and skills, you can always step up to a larger big-bore cruiser later on down the road.

Cruiser Shopping 101

What To Look For & Consider When Buying A New Cruiser Motorcycle

Now that you’re privy to the different available sub-genres and a bit of cruiser history, let’s delve into the five most crucial areas to take into account when buying a bike from this class (in order of importance).

Intended Use: No matter what kind of motorcycle you’re in the market for, your search for a new sled should always be initially guided by your intended use, and this is no less true with cruiser bikes. If you plan on using your bike for daily commuting duties , you’ll want something more nimble and maneuverable, as where if you intend on taking on long-distance treks in the saddle, you will likely want to consider a bagger or touring model.

Style: The immense popularity of the cruiser segment has resulted in a diverse array of styles within the class. Some cruisers take a more vintage approach, drawing aesthetic influence from retro models of the mid-1900s while other models take a more modern approach, with more aggressive character and an overall more contemporary design language. It’s well worth reading up on all the different stylistic options before pulling the trigger on your purchase.

Engine & Power: One of the most defining elements of a cruiser is its engine and said engine’s torque and horsepower output. You not only will want to consider if an engine’s size and power is conducive to your intended use but also if you’re capable of properly and safely managing a particular engine. Additionally, engine mechanics and technology can vary pretty greatly even without today’s market, with some companies employing much more cutting-edge and advanced powertrains than others.

Weight: Most baggers weigh in excess of half-a-ton, making them tremendously difficult to maneuver at lower speeds, especially to the inexperienced and/or uninitiated. As the heaviest motorcycles in existence (aside from side-hacks and trikes), it’s extremely important to factor a cruiser’s weight into your purchase.

Brand: Cruiser riders tend to be a fiercely loyal bunch, and as such certain marques have developed cult statuses and followings, where you’re not just buying a motorcycle, you’re buying into a brand, identity, lifestyle, and experience. Because so many modern cruiser models are inspired by existing vintage bikes, the history of cruiser companies is considered profoundly important. Different manufacturers also have different dealer and support networks and different degrees of access to aftermarket parts. Lastly, it’s always worth reading up on a particular company’s history and reputation for aspects like reliability, as well as their recommended service intervals.

Supplementary Cruiser Selections Worth Considering

Kawasaki Vulcan S ABS

indian cruise motorcycle

The Vulcan S is a decidedly sporty mid-sized cruiser that’s based on  the Japanese brand’s  popular and immensely utilitarian Ninja 650 platform. As such the ABS-equipped Vulcan S gets a sportbike-derived frame and the same fan-favorite 650cc twin engine as the Ninja, albeit it uses a markedly different stance. Also of note is the Vulcan S’ adjustable sliding seat and moving foot controls which allow for a custom rider triangle no matter who gets in the saddle.

Engine:  Liquid-Cooled 39.6ci (649cc) DOHC Parallel-Twin Horsepower:  60.4HP Torque:  46.3FT-LBS Weight:  498.3LBS Origin:  Japan MSRP: $7,899

Harley-Davidson Low Rider S

indian cruise motorcycle

The Low Rider S is a modern classic tourer that’s draped in West Coast style with its bikini headlight fairing, flat drag-style bars, and mid-mounted foot controls. The bike’s reduced rake, inverted front-end mono-shocked rear suspension, and ABS-enabled dual front disc setup collectively give the Low Rider S above-average performance in its class. Your $18K also gets you the latest version of the  Harley-Davidson  Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-Twin engine and your choice of an all-black or crimson paint.

Engine:  Air-Cooled 107ci (1,753cc) SOHC 45° V-Twin Horsepower:  93HP Torque:  114.3FT-LBS Weight:  679LBS Origin:  America MSRP: $18,199

Ducati Diavel 1260

indian cruise motorcycle

Though the XDiavel falls more squarely into the cruiser category of all the bikes in  Ducati’s complete lineup , the Italian manufacturer’s regular Diavel model is unquestionably the top performer of the two, as well as arguably being the more aesthetically attractive of the pair, with the Diavel’s angular intake scoops, higher, sportier seat, and larger radiator covers that are outdated with vertical LED lighting. Powered by a 157hp Testastretta DVT engine, the Diavel 1260 is also offered in a more premium, Ohlins-equipped S-spec, as well as a limited edition top-of-the-line Diavel 1260 Lamborghini that was born out of a collaboration with the supercar manufacturer.

Engine:  Liquid-Cooled 77ci (1,262cc) DOHC 90° L-Twin Horsepower:  157HP Torque:  95FT-LBS Weight:  492LBS Origin:  Italy MSRP: $21,795

Evoke 6061 GT

indian cruise motorcycle

Taking its name from the aerospace-grade 6061 aluminum that its frame is constructed from, this electric cruiser model undoubtedly pushes the envelope in the two-wheeled EV sector with a top speed of over 140mph, and a peak power output of 168hp and over 200ft-lbs of torque. As a point of reference, that’s nearly half the torque output of BMW’s latest M3, despite the 6061 tipping the scales at less than one-tenth the BMW’s curb weight. Just as impressive is the Beijing-built eBike’s  battery pack , which affords 290-miles of autonomy and can be fully recharged in an industry-leading 15 minutes.

Engine:  120kW PMSM Electric Motor Horsepower:  167.6HP Torque:  200.6FT-LBS Weight:  372.5LBS Origin:  China MSRP: $24,995

Indian Challenger

indian cruise motorcycle

Indian’s menacing-looking answer to Harley’s ultra-popular Road Glide, the Challenger is a more refined sophisticated bagger with more technology, better performance, and in our opinion, a more handsome aesthetic design than its Milwaukee-made direct competitor. Not only is the Challenger lighter than the Road Glide, but it also has a slightly bigger engine and produces noticeably more torque and horsepower—all reasons the Indian has been nipping at the heels of H-D’s best-selling bagger. The Challenger is made all the more enticing by its full suite of LED lighting, race-spec radial-mount Brembo brakes, an electronically-adjustable windscreen, a 100W high-output audio system with an active EQ, and 18 gallons of  weatherproof storage space .

Engine:  Liquid-Cooled 108 cu in (1,768cc) SOHC 60° V-Twin Horsepower:  122HP Torque:  128FT-LBS Weight:  831.1LBS Origin:  America MSRP: $24,999

2024 Indian 101 Scout Review | Sporty new range-topping Scout mixes performance with laid-back cruiser thrills

indian cruise motorcycle

  • New ‘1250 SpeedPlus’ V-twin engine
  • New tubular steel chassis
  • Top-notch suspension and brakes

At a glance

Overall rating.

Indian’s new generation 2024 Scout range is topped by the £16,095 101 Scout and it’s a worthy tribute to the late ‘20s original. It was one of most revered performance bikes of its time and the new 2024 version also has the kind of fire in its belly you’d never expect from a cruiser.

The Scout is the revived Indian’s biggest success story and accounts for nearly half the bikes they sell (over 100,000 and counting). Developed over the past three and a half years this is the Scout’s first major update in the decade since it was unveiled at the ‘14 Sturgis Rally. While the latest generation machine is new from the ground up, they haven’t stayed too far from the original’s styling, so it’s still instantly recognisable as a Scout, albeit with smoother lines.

Indian’s new 101 Scout offers a sublime mix of high performance, sharp handling, strong brakes and tech with American cruiser flair. It’ll lap up a spirited Sunday scratch, glide serenely through town, while you admire your reflection in shop windows and wow you with its glossy paintwork, attention to detail, tech and quality components. It isn’t cheap, but you’ll never feel short changed. The remaining four models in the 2024 line-all impress in their own way, whether it’s the performance of the cheaper Sport, the simple lines of the Classic, the style of the Bobber or the sophistication and practicality of the Super. The Scout range may be instantly recognisable from before, but they’ve evolved to be a highly capable and desirable cruisers. The new 101 Scout is a superb, well thought out machine that sums up just how far Indian have come since their revival.

Ride quality & brakes

Sat on plush, beautifully controlled, fully-adjustable suspension the 101 floats from corner to corner with the consummate ease of a well-sorted sportsbike and the harder you push the more it digs in. Steering is light and precise, despite having low and long chassis geometry and braking power from its twin radial Brembo caliper set up is strong and free from ABS intrusion. Adding a dab of rear brake helps the Indian rail even more confidently through corners, while sporty profile Metzeler Cruisetec tyres (16in rear, 19in front) have superb grip and light steering.

It’s easy to forget you’re sat on an American cruiser when the 101 is this good in the turns and just like Triumph and Royal Enfield, Indian have a knack of making non-sportsbikes handle. That’s no great surprise, given their successful track exploits Stateside with their wild Challenger RR dominating the King of Baggers class, FTRs cleaning up in Super Hooligan and dominance of the FTR750 in flattrack.

It sits low to the ground, too, with a seat height of just 654mm, so it’s simple for anyone to get their feet flat on the floor. Despite its weight (240kg wet, no fuel), the 101 Scout never feels bulky or unwieldy, whether you’re inching through cross town San Francisco traffic, cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway, scratching around Californian canyons, or heading down to Lidl for a light shop.

Indian 101 Scout close up of stitching on seat

With a seat you sink into like a favourite armchair the 101 is all-day comfortable, even with its feet-forward pegs, but for those who prefer more a sportier, more conventional riding position, Indian offer mid-mounted pegs as an accessory. Ride quality is superb, but with just 76mm rear wheel travel the 101 will crash over big bumps in the road, which is why it loses out on a full 5/5.

Tech spotlight

  • Indian says the Scout is 4.5kg lighter than before, despite a new tubular steel frame that replaces the old cast aluminium item. The new frame will also be easier to cut, shut and customise for specials builders. The fuel tank is more rounded and its capacity goes up from 12.5 litres to 12.9 litres. A traditional fuel cap replaces the old flush sportsbike-type cap and the Scout is now fitted with a fuel gauge.
  • Sachs 43mm USD fully forks are reminiscent of the original BMW S1000RR’s with numbered rebound and compression adjusters on top of the fork leg.
  • Fully-adjustable piggyback shocks are made in-house and like the Classic, Sport and Super offer 76mm wheel travel. The Scout Bobber’s wheel travel is 51mm.
  • Twin 320mm discs and four piston radial Brembos are as sporty as they come. The rest of the Scout range has a single 298mm disc and twin piston caliper.
  • Hand stitched seat is stylish and comfy. All Scouts are single-seaters, except the Super Scout, but pillion seats and backrests are available as an accessory.

Indian 101 Scout rear shock suspension close up

Think of the 101 Scout as an SP or R model and you won’t be too far off the mark, so much so that in terms of sporty cruiser rivals, the 101 Scout sits in a class of one. Its new 110bhp SpeedPlus 1250 V-twin motor catapults the Indian out of corners and it pulls hard all the way to the 9000rpm redline through its slick, widely spaced, gearbox. The 101 isn’t just quick for a cruiser, it’s a fast bike. Period. Riding the 101 Scout at any speed is a piece of apple pie. The new motor burbles away without ever being lumpy or difficult to manage, fuelling from a closed throttle is perfect and the power delivery friendly and unintimidating.

  • Indian’s new ‘1250 SpeedPlus’ engine replaces the out-going Scout’s 1130cc unit. The new 1250cc, 60-degree V-twin has new crankcases, crank, pistons, rods, cams, larger valves and flowed heads. The motor has a smoother outer finish and now it’s simpler to remove the rocker covers, which will make servicing easier and cheaper. An oil sight glass has also been added and the radiator is paired down to fit neatly between the frame’s front down tubes for a cleaner look. A new low-slung exhaust replaces the old model’s stacked twin pipes and frees up space for a bigger right pannier. The V-twin has 11% more power and 14% more torque across the rev range: 105.9bhp @ 7250rpm and 79.7lb.ft @ 6300rpm. The 101 Scout makes slightly more: 110bhp@7250rpm and 80.4lb.ft @ 6300rpm.

Reliability & build quality

Sporty pretentions aside, the 101 is a cruiser at heart and its looks will be the biggest draw for potential owners. It’s pure Americana and opening your garage door to this on a Sunday morning will never be a chore. Sure, it isn’t cheap, but the quality shines through, from its perfect fit and finish to its deep, lustrous paintwork (available in red or white). It also has huge presence, with a low-slung, feet-forward riding position, a chopped rear mudguard to show off its fat tyre and rumbly V-twin soundtrack.

There are some electronic glitches on these pre-production models MCN rode at its world launch, but Indian say they’ll be ironed-out before they hit the dealers at the end of May 2024 and there’s no reason to think otherwise. MCN’s online reviews of all Indian models are glowing when it comes reliability.

Value vs rivals

With its performance chassis part, laid back cruiser looks and high equipment level, there isn’t much to directly rival the 101 Scout. But you could say Harley Davidson get the closest with the £19,735 Low Rider S , £15,145 Sportster S .

It's well equipped and fitted with the top spec ‘Limited +Tech’ packs, as well as fully adjustable suspension, Brembos, a stitched seat, machined aluminium yokes, USB charger, LED lights, blacked-out components and 6in handlebar risers…the list goes on. Everything works as it should, although the small switchgear can be fiddly to use. The drop-down bar end mirrors give a clean look when you’re riding, they’re always full of elbows, but they can be switched and turned upright for a better view behind.

Indian 101 Scout handlebar picture from sat on the bike

Indian are offering a host of Scout accessories: 70 new ones and 30 already on the books from the previous model. They’re split into Commuter, Open Roads, Stealth, and Overnighter packs. There are over 30 riding position possibilities and now that the Scout’s frame is identical across the range, unlike before, you can mix and match accessories. It means you could create a two-seater 101 Scout with a back rest, luggage and footboards, or add traction control and a colour dash to the Classic.

The Scout comes in three ascending trim levels: Standard: LEDs, keyed ignition, ABS, analogue display and black paint. Limited: Cruise control, ride modes (Standard, Sport), TC, USB charger and solid paint options. Limited +Tech package: 4in TFT display, keyless ignition, connected ride, solid and premium paint options.

Model history & versions

Model history.

2014: Original Indian Scout introduced 2024: 101 Scout launched. Tops Indian’s heavily revamped Scout range and as well as a new engine and chassis comes with Brembos, fully-adjustable suspension and fully loaded spec.

Other versions

The 101 is joined by another four new Scout models for 2024.. Each uses the same new chassis and 1250 motor, albeit remapped to give slightly less power than the 101 (106bhp). An A2 licence-friendly Scout Sixty is planned for the future.

Sport Scout (£13,395)

A more affordable take on the 101 Scout, the Sport is essentially the same with similar ergonomics and styling, but comes with slightly lower-spec suspension, less fork travel and a single disc front brake set up. Ride and handling aren’t quite as sophisticated, but it’s still very capable and every inch an accomplished sportsbike-meets-cruiser.

Scout Bobber (£13,195)

Swaggering with attitude the Bobber is Indian’s most popular Scout model. It has cut down mudguards, blacked-out components, a fat 16in front wheel and an even lower 649mm high seat, just 51mm of rear suspension travel suspension and a more laid-back riding position. It performs as well as the sporty Scouts, but with no wind protection and an aversion to big bumps the Scout is more for skulking through town than grinding out big miles.

Super Scout (£16,095)

Based on the Bobber, the Super Scout tourer is the easiest of all the Scouts to get on with. Bars are closer to the rider, there’s plenty of wind protection, its seat has the most back support and the ride is smoother, thanks to its extra rear wheel travel. It has chrome

finishes, is the only two-seater in the Scout line up and has the Limited +Tech pack as standard. It also comes with panniers, big enough to swallow the old Scout’s panniers.

Scout Classic (£13,395)

As the name would suggest the Classic has no ambitions to be sporty, moody or travel the world. It’s a simple Sunday morning cruiser with lots of chrome, fat mudguards and wire wheels, running a 16-incher up front. Performance is on par with the other models, but it’s built to cruise.

As the ultimate entry-level cruiser, it is well-admired by beginners, seasoned riders, and even sports bike enthusiasts transitioning into the Indian realm.

While some may argue that there are cheaper Japanese V-Twin alternatives like the Yamaha V-Star or Honda Shadow, the adage "you get what you pay for" rings true. American manufacturers like Indian Motorcycles distinguish themselves by maintaining high standards of riding experience alongside competitive pricing, fostering a loyal customer base. Since its announcement in 2020, the Scout Bobber Sixty has emerged as one of the most coveted motorcycles in the US market . Its compact size, agile handling, minimal maintenance requirements, and customization options contributed to its popularity.

However, it was its affordability that truly captivated riders. With a consistent MSRP hovering around $10,000, the Sixty has served as an attractive option. Customers would flock so frequently to the cruiser section that dealerships would have to make repeated orders to the factory in order to maintain their supply. Even now, this midsize cruiser is one model that continues to pop up on riders' radar who simply want to saddle up and go. Now, let's delve deeper into what you get on the most affordable American V-Twin cruiser on the market.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources, including Indian Motorcycles and JD Power .

The New Indian Scout Is Here To Make Harley-Davidson Cruisers Sweat

The scout bobber sixty has consistently been indian's most affordable cruiser, 2024 indian scout bobber sixty msrp: starting at $10,749.

The Indian Scout Bobber Sixty has maintained its allure over its 4 years in the motorcycle market primarily due to its consistently attractive price point . With an initial MSRP spanning from $8,999 to $10,749, this midsize cruiser has consistently managed to avoid inducing any major sticker shock among prospective buyers. While it's true that some Japanese cruisers may boast lower price tags in comparison to the American V-Twin, the Scout Bobber Sixty compensates for this through its unmatched, authentic charm.

At its core lies a robust 60 cubic inch (999cc) liquid-cooled V-Twin engine, perfectly balancing power and efficiency. Weighing in at just 548 lbs, it offers an agile and responsive ride, complemented by a comfortably low seat height that appeals to riders of various heights . Additionally, its sleek blacked-out frame and interior keep up with modern styling, driving up its overall appeal. With multiple color options available, riders also have the freedom to express their individuality while cruising the open road. Ultimately, those who opt for the Scout Bobber Sixty find themselves getting more bang for their buck when compared to their lower-priced, less-powerful Japanese counterparts. Indian Scout Bobber Sixty Price Range (2021 - Present)

The indian scout bobber sixty has very responsive handling, twists and turns have never felt so easy.

One particular area where the Indian Scout Bobber Sixty exceeds is its entry-level handling ability , showcasing a top-tier performance that rivals the competition. Seasoned riders will have no problem understanding its ability to maneuver through twists and turns with precision. However, it's the bike's inherently user-friendly nature that truly distinguishes it as an ideal choice for those entering the cruiser realm for the first time. For many novice riders, the prospect of navigating a motorcycle can appear intimidating at first, with concerns about size, weight, and handling at the front of their minds. But the Sixty addresses these apprehensions with its low-profile design and mid-sized stature, presenting a more approachable option for both sexes.

This motorcycle’s intuitive handling offers a smooth learning curve for riders eager to hone their skills. Its forgiving nature allows newcomers to gradually understand the nuances of motorcycle control without feeling overwhelmed. Thus, instilling a sense of confidence with every ride. So riders find themselves forging a bond with the Scout Bobber Sixty. The Scout Bobber Sixty Outperforms Every Other Low-Cost V-Twin Cruiser

More power means more excitement.

As anyone who has dived head first into the world of V-Twin motorcycles, it becomes obvious that there are a lot of options available at relatively affordable prices . However, it's important to recognize that the ticket price of a budget cruiser will often correlate with the quality of the riding experience. Seasoned riders often attest to the common nature of these lower-priced models, acknowledging that they typically provide enough enjoyment for only a year or two before it’s time to start upgrading. That is where the Indian Scout Bobber Sixty shines. Because unlike many of its competitors, this motorcycle has enough horsepower, torque, and handling to keep dedicated riders happy for years.

Indian is known for having some of the most powerful V-Twin engines on the market . Unlike many of its counterparts, the Scout Bobber Sixty boasts an impressive blend of the essentials to cater to various riding styles. Its heart generates an impressive 78 horsepower and 65 pound-feet of torque. This, coupled with its responsive 5-speed transmission, ensures riders are treated to instant acceleration, smooth and effortless cruising abilities, and impeccable city versatility. Whether you're a novice rider gradually getting your bearings for a casual ride around town, or a more seasoned vet looking to roll the throttle and unleash the Sixty's full potential on winding roads, this motorcycle seamlessly adapts to a wide range of riding preferences and skill levels. Its versatility bridges the gap between approachability and high performance.

Indian Scout Bobber Sixty vs The Competition

15 reasons why the new indian scout bobber is the ultimate daily rider, the indian scout bobber sixty retains high resale value, defying depreciation.

One of the high points of the Indian Scout Bobber Sixty, particularly as an affordable American V-Twin cruiser, is its ability to maintain value over time . Like any new vehicle, it's no secret that depreciation sets the moment it rolls off the dealership lot. However, where many owners of Japanese V-Twin cruisers find themselves grappling with diminished resale values, Indian Scout Bobber Sixty owners often enjoy a different experience.

Despite the passage of years, this iconic cruiser manages to retain a significant portion of its original value. Whether it's the year of production, the mileage accumulated, or the overall physical condition, the Scout Bobber consistently commands a respectable trade-in valuation. This enduring value proposition not only underscores the quality, craftsmanship, and enduring appeal of the cruiser but also ensures a more satisfying ownership experience for riders seeking both performance and long-term value in their future motorcycle investments.

2025 Indian Scout 101 Blends Old-School Cool With Modern Muscle

Harley upped the ante with its sportster, and indian went all-in with a new scout.

Image for article titled 2025 Indian Scout 101 Blends Old-School Cool With Modern Muscle

Welcome to the party, pal! When Harley-Davidson launched the new Sportster lineup back in 2021, it brought a big engine and lots of power to the mid-size cruiser game. The Sportster pushes out between 90 and 121 horsepower , while the prior-generation Indian Scout managed just 78 ponies with its inexpensive Sixty line and 100 horses for the full-fat models . With impressive competition from the Bar and Shield, Indian went with a clean sheet design for its new Scout, giving it a fresh chassis, a fresh engine, and fresh styling. Was it worth it? In two words: hell yeah.

Full disclosure: Indian flew me to San Francisco to ride the 2025 Scout lineup. The ride was split into two days with the sport-focused models on one day and the cruiser crowd on the other day. I ate lots of great food and slept in two different hotels with a view of the ocean. I had a great time.

Image for article titled 2025 Indian Scout 101 Blends Old-School Cool With Modern Muscle

While Harley is still producing just two bikes on the Sportster platform, Indian launched the Scout with five distinct models in two categories. The Bobber, Classic, and Super are style-forward cruisers packed with goodies, and the Sport and 101 are stripped-back machines with a dedication to speed. All five models are based around a new tubular steel frame with alloy subframes and the new SpeedPlus 1250-cc watercooled V-twin engine. The Bobber, Classic, Super, and Sport all get the same 105-hp output, while the 101 is given a slight bump to 111 ponies. Technically, because they’re all built on the same platform, these Scout models are all modular. You can mix and match pretty much any of the parts to make your bike your own. If you want a 101 with a big windshield and bags, you can do that. If you want a full-chrome Classic with mid-controls and bar-end mirrors, you can do that, too.

On the first day of the ride event, which took us from the Golden Gate Bridge to the beach in Santa Cruz, I swapped between Scouts Bobber, Classic, and Super. They’re all variations on a common cruiser theme, and I’ve covered them in a separate piece. The second day was a twist-and-turn blast through the mountain roads inland heading back north to San Francisco. While I had a little bit of time on the Sport, I spent most of my day on the 101, which was totally fine by me.

Image for article titled 2025 Indian Scout 101 Blends Old-School Cool With Modern Muscle

As good as the Scout Sport is, I was very impressed by the top-of-the-line 101. I’m not sure I really noticed the extra six horsepower of the 101, but there were a ton of other parts that made its $17,000 price tag make sense. You can immediately tell what this bike is about when you look at it. It’s got a techy four-inch round touchscreen digital dash, gold inverted forks and piggyback rear shocks, dual-front Brembo brake components, blacked-out everything, 6-inch bar risers, and a quarter fairing. There’s a lot of throwback SoCal scene going on here, mixed with some quality components. It’s a peg-scraping good time.

At around 550 pounds the 101 Scout isn’t exactly a lightweight, but it’s a full 10 pounds lighter than the outgoing Scout models. The engineers at Indian must have been really keeping track of the ounces and pounds, because the new steel-frame bike is lighter than the old all-aluminum bike. Astounding. All that said, it’s about 10 percent heavier than Harley’s more-powerful Sportster S, which is exactly the same price as the 101 Scout.

Image for article titled 2025 Indian Scout 101 Blends Old-School Cool With Modern Muscle

After just over 101 miles on the 101 Scout, I was a bit fatigued at the end of the ride, largely due to traffic in the city and fighting the wind on the freeway, but it was the kind of tired you get after having fun all day. The roads were a good mix of tight, technical, flowing and smooth, though a few were a bit less than smooth. With fully-adjustable suspension, the 101’s ride wasn’t bad even on the worst roads California could throw at us. The Scout sits low to the ground with a 26.8-inch seat height and 3 inches of suspension travel. Add in the forward control layout and my big-and-tall frame, and you’ve got a recipe for days of back pain after a few hours in the saddle, but Indian managed to find the right mix of suspension and seat to keep my spine happy.

For me, the biggest upgrade from the Sport to the 101 was found in the braking. The single front rotor on the Sport is adequate, but the sporty-ish Metzeler Cruisetec 19-inch front tires can overwhelm the brakes into the tightest corners. Adding a second front rotor and caliper and upgrading to Brembo hardware really made a noticeable difference in braking character.

Image for article titled 2025 Indian Scout 101 Blends Old-School Cool With Modern Muscle

When Indian put us on the roads around Alice’s Restaurant, I knew it had to be pretty confident in the Scout’s abilities. They are, without doubt, among the best driving roads in the world. Luckily the bike handled it with aplomb, delivering way more grip than the wide forward control pegs would allow lean angle. I spent most of the day dragging the pegs from corner to corner. Grip is good, braking is good, power is good. It’s a pretty solid package.

Would I buy a 101 Scout over a Harley Sportster S? They’re both 9,500-rpm big-bore V-twins making serious power. The Harley is lighter, but makes do with just one front caliper. The Indian looks cooler with a narrower radiator and low-slung exhaust. The Harley gets better fuel mileage, but the ride is a little abnormal with cartoonish balloon tires, while the 101 Scout has better (and adjustable) suspension. There’s a lot of positives to either, but the Indian is the safe bet.

Image for article titled 2025 Indian Scout 101 Blends Old-School Cool With Modern Muscle

Indian wasn’t exactly beating around the bush when it launched the new Scout. For decades the mid-size cruiser market has been dominated by Harley’s Sportster, though Indian has grown from just two percent of the segment to 18 percent in the last decade. With the new H-D pushing into a sportier and speedier realm, Indian is aiming for the section of market that Harley recently vacated. It’s a smart move, and the new Scout fits right in.

This will be a successful bike for the brand, I think. The Scout has always been Indian’s sales leader, moving several thousand units annually. It’s instantly obvious to me that the new Scout is miles better than the old Scout, and as a result it should continue Indian’s upward trajectory in the market. If you’re the kind of person who wants a mid-size cruiser with throwback-cool visuals and a sport-focused ride, the 101 is probably the bike you want. If you can’t swing the price tag of the 101, a Sport would probably suffice.
