The Best Time Travel Movies of the 2000s, Ranked

Some of these movies are among the greatest of the 2000s, and they're all essential projects that revolve around time travel.

Off the bat, it's worth noting that these movies about time travel run a surprising gamut of genre. There's the typical sci-fi fare one might expect, but there are some surprising left-field inclusions as well. While the list's upper echelon can be hit or miss here and there, every film featured herein will be of some quality worth writing home about. The top picks are some of the best time travel movies you'll ever see, with inventive visions seen into specific fruition by all of the names attached to the respective project.

With talented directors at the helm and star-studded casts to boot, you're likely to recognize the majority of films on the list. But along the way, some may appear unfamiliar. All that said, these are the twenty greatest time travel movies of the 2000s, ranked.

20 The Jacket

From Adrien Brody and Keira Knightley to Daniel Craig and Jennifer Jason Leigh, perhaps the most notable element of The Jacket (2005) would be the performances of its stars. Brody plays Jack Starks, an amnesiac veteran of the Gulf War who finds himself at the scene of a murder with no memory of how he got there. He's then sent to a mental hospital, where he discovers his penchant for time travel and interacts with Jackie Price, who's played by Knightley.

A psychological thriller, tangible elements of romance are implemented around most corners of the plot, with the movie of course fitting the science fiction bill, as well. And though this isn't the best film you'll read about today, don't let its numbers of success fool you — The Jacket could easily be deemed underrated. It's well worth a watch overall.

Though few can be cited as high-quality pieces of cinema, Adam Sandler comedies always boast their fair share of fans. However, they're rarely acclaimed by critics. And while Click (2006) by Frank Coraci does hold a 34% approval rating on critical consensus website Rotten Tomatoes, there's plenty of quality to be found herein. There are poignant moments, firstly. Rare for a Sandler comedy.

But this was also Sandler's third collaboration with director Frank Coraci following The Waterboy (1998) and The Wedding Singer (1998) from the prior decade. The former is their funniest film together, while the latter is perhaps their best overall. But Click nonetheless deserves respect for seeing such an off-the-wall premise into fruition as Sandler's protagonist is given a remote that controls time. It's a famous plot, and with good reason.

18 Kate & Leopold

Directed by James Mangold, it's off the bat worth noting the two performers in the titular roles of this entry: Meg Ryan as Kate, and Hugh Jackman as Leopold. But as for the plot of Kate & Leopold (2001): things kick into gear when a physicist named Stuart Besser ( played by Liev Schreiber ) pulls his great-great-grandfather through a time portal by accident.

That's where Jackman's character, His Grace the 3rd Duke of Albany, comes into play. He falls in love with Meg Ryan's character Kate, who used to be Stuart's girlfriend. Talk about a comedy of errors. And while this isn't the highest-quality movie you'll read about today, just about every romantic comedy featuring Meg Ryan is worth the watch to one degree or another. And considering Hugh Jackman also pulls out all the stops, Kate & Leopold does deserve its credit in the end.

17 A Christmas Carol

Disney's a christmas carol.

With enticing visuals and charismatic performances, A Christmas Carol (2009) is among the greatest adaptations of the famous Charles Dickens novel. In fact, even with several competitors, this is the best animated movie to ever tell the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge. That's one of literature's most famous characters, and he's portrayed to perfection by Jim Carey via motion capture animation.

Other names among its cast includes Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, and Cary Elwes. And of course, also noteworthy is Robert Zemeckis, who wrote the adapted script and directed the final product. While it may not hold up as well as other animated stints from this era, you can rest assured that it's of the utmost quality. Even if some critics failed to see light in its quality, A Christmas Carol did receive a perfect, four-out-of-four-star rating from Roger Ebert . Not much else should be said.

16 13 Going on 30

13 going on 30.

A geeky thirteen-year-old, Jenna Rink wants to win the affection of a clique called "The Six Chicks". But upon being humiliated by her prospective friends, Jenna wishes herself as an adult. Magically, her wish comes true thanks to her neighbor (who's secretly in love with her), with the thirty-year-old version of Jenna being played by Jennifer Garner.

She received great praise for her performance, with 13 Going on 30 (2004) putting Garner on the Hollywood map. And there are plenty of other performers worth noting among the cast, such as Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer, Andy Serkis, and Jim Gaffigan. There's even a young Brie Larson as one of the Six Chicks. In the end, 13 Going on 30 features an intriguing premise regarding time travel, and the product holds up well thanks to the efforts of its cast.

15 The Forbidden Kingdom

Obsessed with martial arts movies, a teenager named Jason rummages through bootleg DVDs in a pawn shop when he stumbles upon a golden staff. It transports him to ancient China, where he aligns with a kung fu master and a misfit warrior to save a fabled figure called The Monkey King. It's a silly plot. Thankfully, The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) works fluidly thanks not just to solid screenwriting efforts, but also the performances of its cast.

Joining two legends of the subgenre , this wuxia title features Jackie Chan and Jet Li as the lead martial artists. Michael Angarano plays Jason, while Liu Yifei plays another ally called Golden Sparrow. It's an imaginative title through and through, with compelling action sequences bolstering the intrigue of the plot itself. Well worth a watch, The Forbidden Kingdom is an essential piece about time travel.

14 Mr. Nobody

Written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael, this entry focuses on the titular character Nemo Nobody, the last mortal on earth at 118 years of age. The rest of humanity has achieved quasi-immortality, with the plot from there playing out in non-linear fashion. Starring Jared Leto, Sarah Polley, and Diane Kruger, this time traveling spectacle is perhaps best analyzed through a more technical lens of filmmaking.

It's a smart script, with enticing visuals and brilliant sound design. But its cast also performs brilliantly, with Mr. Nobody (2009) going down among the most underrated from everyone involved. On top of the aforementioned actors, others include Linh Dan Pham, Rhys Ifans, and Juno Temple. Quite the talented cast, with the brilliance of Mr. Nobody partly attributed to their efforts. But mainly, it's an engrossing journey through time that deserves a spot on the list.

13 Happy Accidents

Written and directed by Brad Anderson, this is one of several time-travel titles from the 2000s that blends genres with the realm of romantic comedies. Marisa Tomei stars as Ruby Weaver, a resident of New York City who can't seem to hold onto a relationship. She then meets Sam, played by Vincent D'Onofrio, who she falls in love with only to find out he's traveled back from the year 2470. An enticing premise, however silly.

The leads share a great rapport, and they see the project into fairly convincing fruition. Though not the most acclaimed project of the bunch, Happy Accidents (2000) did receive decent reviews from industry pundits. And while not many waves were made at the worldwide box office, credit should nonetheless be doled out to this entry as a decent film about time travel.

12 Déjà Vu

The fourth of five collaborations between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, this is among the most fan-favorite films from the 2000s to revolve around the concept at hand. The aforementioned performer stars as a time-traveling ATF agent who arrives in the past to stop a terrorist attack. But in tandem, as Déjà Vu (2006) plays out in New Orleans, protagonist Douglas Carlin also attempts to save a woman for whom he falls.

While it made great money in ticket sales, Déjà Vu did come up short in the eyes of critics. It holds a middling approval rating of 55% on consensus website Rotten Tomatoes , with particular criticism being attributed to Scott's attempts to blend multiple genres. But for as many well-warranted points as they made, Déjà Vu should nonetheless be held in high regard. As far as science-fiction action-thriller romance movies go, this may be the greatest ever.

11 Meet the Robinsons

Meet the robinsons.

A somewhat forgotten outing from Walt Disney Animation, this entry was well-regarded upon release. Following a young inventor named Lewis, who's struggling to find fitting adoption parents due to his haphazard scientific experiments. The plot kicks off when a time traveler (around the same age) arrives at the orphanage and takes Lewis to a high-tech future setting.

The plot expands in thrills, intrigue, and emotion from there, with Meet the Robinsons (2007) going down among the best animated films of its decade. The pacing, the dialogue, the well-written character dynamics — every element of storytelling pieces together into a wonderful overall package that holds up well today. If it's been some time since you've revisited Meet the Robinsons , rest assured that it deserves a spot on the list.

10 Idiocracy

Directed by Mike Judge, this is among the funniest features to ever revolve around time travel. In the case of Idiocracy (2006), the protagonist (played by Luke Wilson) takes part in a hibernation experiment — alongside Maya Rudolph's character — run by the government. But when the two awaken, they find themselves in a dystopian society where humanity has become too stupid to operate on their own without technology.

An enticing premise that paves the way for some truly hilarious jokes and indelible one-liners. The cast performs well across the board, at least, as far as comedies go. This is an absurd plot, with others like Dax Shepard, Terry Crews, and Justin Long helping see the product into convincing fruition. If it's been some time since you revisited Idiocracy , rest assured that it holds up as one of the funniest movies of the decade.

9 Frequency

A science fiction thriller from director Gregory Hoblit, the script for Frequency (2000) was penned by Toby Emmerich. Though he's typically a composer and producer, the latter creative has two screenwriting credits to his name: the one at hand, along with a lesser-known movie called The Last Mimzy (2007). Both revolve around time travel, showcasing Emmerich's aptitude for storytelling in that regard.

The cast features well-known stars Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel as father and son , respectively. The latter character (named John) seizes the opportunity to reverse the events of the past and save his father from a fire that transpired thirty years prior. It's a gripping tale, tense and fascinating until its final frame. It's fallen a bit by the wayside of popularity in recent years. Nonetheless, Frequency goes down among the most memorable movies of its kind — especially when it comes to the 2000s.

Mysterious weather conditions send five friends on a yacht onto another vessel. But this new ship isn't as it seems, with the plot of Triangle (2009) expanding in thrills from there. A psychological horror film, this entry saw direction under Christopher Smith, who also wrote the script. He received great reverence for his work, with Triangle being held in high regard upon release despite waning in name value ever since.

You may not be familiar with this entry, but it's without a doubt worth a watch. Thanks to charismatic performances from his actors and great shot value re: camerawork, Smith created a definitive 2000s movie when it comes to the horror genre in general. Time loops are among the most prototypical story motifs with regard to the topic at hand. And although Triangle is far from the most popular films on the list, its team deserves credit today for their work.

7 Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Terminator 3: rise of the machines (2003).

One of the greatest science-fiction franchises is also among the best action series, as Terminator (originally by James Cameron) consists of high-quality projects with name value to boot. And while Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) showcased a notable decline in quality compared to the previous entries, it's nonetheless of a caliber worth writing home about. And of course, each film under this banner does revolve around time travel.

In this case, it's known as Chrono Displacement. And in Rise of the Machines , the artificial intelligence Skynet sends a T-X (played by Kristanna Loken) back to stop the future lieutenant's of the franchise's resistance forces. It works well, particularly as a sequel that picks up after the events of its predecessor. If it's been a while since you revisited T3 , rest assured that it holds up well today.

6 The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Among the more common tropes or story elements regarding this variety of cinema would be the existence of a time loop. It's featured in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) as protagonist Makoto Konno relives the same day on repeat. She uses these newfound powers to her advantage as she traverses Kuranose High School , reversing time to make better grades and arrive on time to events for which she was late.

But soon, Makoto realizes these occurrences also affect the lives of those around her, creating tangible conflict in an imaginative world with alluring visuals. It's a well-written project through and through, receiving widespread acclaim upon release and being likened to the films of Hayo Miyazaki. Directed by Mamoru Hosoda, this entry may not be as popular in the States as its Studio Ghibli counterparts. But The Girl Who Leapt Through Time nonetheless deserves a spot on the list.

5 Star Trek

Directed by J.J. Abrams, this essential time travel movie of the 2000s successfully rebooted one of the greatest science-fiction properties to ever exist. Star Trek (2009) accrued great money at the worldwide box office, showcasing its status among the more popular films on the list. But this stint also holds a 96% approval rating on critical consensus website Rotten Tomatoes, going down among the more revered films to ever revolve around time travel.

Star Trek: Every Movie In The Franchise, Ranked

For those unfamiliar: it chronicles Captain Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and Spock (portrayed by Zachary Quinto) as they and their crew of the SS Enterprise battle against a villain named Nero. The antagonist is played by Eric Bana, and frankly, those famous names hardly scratch the surface of this star-studded cast . There's also John Cho, Winona Ryder, Zoe Saldana, and Anton Yelchin, with everyone performing in convincing fashion. Frequently cited among the best films of its franchise, Star Trek also goes down among the best science fiction films of the decade.

4 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban.

With more name value than just about any film on the list, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) is also a high-quality film with a talented cast and crew. Of course, the titular boy who lived is played by Daniel Radcliffe, while Rupert Grint and Emma Watson show up as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively. The trio fight against the dastardly dementors while also unfurling the secrets regarding a mysterious figure called Sirius Black.

These Are the Best Alfonso Cuaron Movies, Ranked

An intriguing premise with magic at its core. And in this entry, Hermione is also in possession of a time turner. Her ability to reverse events becomes a staple plot point of the movie, with everyone seeing the overall product into brilliant fruition. It's worth noting that Alfonso Cuarón is among the finest talents of his generation, and his directing Prisoner of Azkaban bolstered its quality in the end.

Entrepreneurial engineers, two friends named Aaron and Abe make their living by building error-checking technology. You may know where this is headed. To kick off the plot of Primer (2005), the two friends inadvertently concoct a time machine that proves just as dangerous in its use as it is intriguing in its essence.

Primer: Arguably the Most Realistic Movie About Time Travel

A sci-fi stint with psychological undertones, Primer was written and directed by Shane Currath in his feature film debut. Currath also edited and scored the film, stamping his creative vision across the board of production. He even stars in Primer as Aaron, with this going down among the most monumental works from a single creative throughout the 2000s. Though far from the most famous film of the bunch, Primer is among the most critically acclaimed. And with good reason.

2 Timecrimes

Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, who also appears in the lead role, Timecrimes (2007) features one of the more intriguing premises from any film on the list. Even for a time travel film . A man named Héctor finds himself tracked down by a menacing figure wrapped in bandages, and receives tips from a scientist to hide in a large mechanical device.

The 21 Best International Films of the 2000s

Of course, it turns out to be a time machine, with Héctor from there finding himself stuck within a casual loop. And even with the widespread acclaim from critics received upon release, Timecrimes might even go down among the most fan-favorite time travel movies ever, regardless of decade. But when it comes to the 2000s, there's no doubt: Nacho Vigalondo's magnum opus remains among the finest films of its kind. It deserves a spot on the list.

1 Donnie Darko

Donnie darko.

Directed by Richard Kelly, this entry features Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular character, a teenager who experiences bouts of sleepwalking before seeing visions of a giant rabbit. His name is Frank, and he asks Gyllanhaal's protagonist if the latter believes in time travel. Donnie then asks his science teacher, who gives him an in-universe book titled The Philoosophy of Time Travel . It's a common motif throughout the film.

Donnie Darko (2001) saw great acclaim upon release, and with good reason. It's an intriguing premise with one of the highest acclaimed performances from the aforementioned actor. This is the film that put Gyllenhaal on the map — he's since become the greatest thriller actor to ever live — and Donnie Darko remains among the best of the bunch all these years down the line. It's also an essential piece of Hollywood history that involves the concept of time travel.

The Top 10 Best Jared Leto Movies Ranked

Let's take a walk down memory lane in honor of the Oscar winner's new thriller 'The Little Things,' shall we?

I was only 10 (and a half!) years old when My So-Called Life premiered on television in 1994, but even back then I can remember girls going gaga for the show, and not just because it featured a relatable teenage lead in Claire Danes . No, it was also because of the cute boy who played the rebellious yet sensitive Jordan Catalano. His name was Jared Leto , and given his killer hair and puppy dog eyes, it was immediately clear that he was a star in the making. My So-Called Life was canceled after a single season, but Leto's life in Hollywood was just beginning. Just five years later, he had already worked with directors like  David Fincher , Terrence Malick , Darren Aronofsky and James Mangold .

Over the course of the next 20 years, Leto blossomed into an Oscar-winning actor, though he still behaved like a "damaged" provocateur, making more headlines for terrorizing his Suicide Squad co-stars with used condoms than for his actual performance as the Joker -- a role he'll soon reprise in Zack Snyder's Justice League  ( coming March 18 ). But let's not get ahead of ourselves, for today we celebrate the release of Leto's other HBO Max movie, The Little Things .

Writer-director John Lee Hancock has been trying to make this movie since Leto first arrived on the Hollywood scene in the early '90s. Numerous A-list stars flirted with the script over the years, though I don't think Hancock would complain about ultimately landing Denzel Washington and fellow Oscar winners Rami Malek and Leto, the latter of whom plays a suspected serial killer.

In honor of the release of The Little Things  -- click here for Collider's review -- I decided to examine Leto's career in order to identify and rank his 10 best movies. Now, you'll notice that The Thin Red Line is absent on the list below, but that's because Leto's character is killed off early, so even though that's a great movie, it's not really a great "Jared Leto movie." The same can be said of Girl, Interrupted , another good film in which the actor briefly appears as Winona Ryder 's ex-boyfriend.

I also bypassed interesting failures like Blade Runner 2049 and, yes, Suicide Squad , and not because Leto is bad in those films (he's not), but because I just can't stand either of those movies. He's even decent in Oliver Stone 's historical epic Alexander , but the cut of that movie that I saw back in the day was a train wreck, one that I've never cared to revisit.

Still, I managed to find ten solid movies in which I appreciated what Leto was up to, and though not all of the movies are great (see #9), and at least two of the better films on this list feature Leto in relatively small parts, this is Jared Leto's so-called career as I see it, for better or worse. He has certainly come a long way from Jordan Catalano. Without further ado, here we go!

10. Prefontaine

There were two Steve Prefontaine biopics that came out within a year of each other -- Without Limits starring Billy Crudup , and this one -- and while it's up for debate which one is better, what's clear is that Leto did right by the long-distance runner, who died in a tragic car accident at the age of 24.  R. Lee Ermey and Ed O'Neill play Leto's coaches, but it was acclaimed documentary filmmaker Steve James ( Hoop Dreams ) who really pushed him on the track, and let's face it, that hard work paid off, as this may be as good as Leto has ever looked on the big screen. The actor even said as much on Twitter, noting that he was in the best shape of his life back then . In fact, Leto looked and even sounded so much like Prefontaine that when Steve's sister first saw him in character, she reportedly broke down and began to cry. I'll take that as high praise, indeed.

9. Switchback

This is the "one for me" entry on this list, as I was always a fan of this somewhat cheesy '90s thriller. You know the kind. There were a bunch of them in the wake of Seven . Leto has always been drawn to darker material, and here he plays a handsome hitchhiker who we're led to believe is responsible for a series of murders across Texas. Dennis Quaid plays the FBI agent on the case, one who has a personal stake in it because his young son is missing, while good old Danny Glover plays a drifter with a very suspicious set of wheels. This is the sort of movie you'd catch on Cinemax back in the day and get sucked into watching, and I've always appreciated the lengths it went to in order to disguise its killer and keep you guessing.

8. Lord of War

Before Nicolas Cage went off the deep end (and God bless him for that), he played an illegal arms dealer with no morals who ropes his kid brother Vitaly (Leto) into his growing business. Leto shines as the black sheep of the family, a wild child who becomes addicted to cocaine and is forced to check into rehab, but one who ultimately has a good heart. He also has a conscience, unlike his older brother, who is driven by the bottom line. It's noble that Vitaly tries to save a group of refugees from certain death at the hands of an African militia, but in a movie as cynical as this one, it's only natural that he he pays the ultimate price for his heroism. It's possible that Leto learned some of his recent tricks from Cage, another actor who is never anything less than fully committed to his characters.

7. Fight Club

Sure, it's Edward Norton and Brad Pitt who dominate this movie, but don't forget about Leto's aptly-named Angel Face, who arrives on the porch at 537 Paper Street a beautiful creature before Norton makes him his personal punching bag and turns his face into pulp. Something tells me that director David Fincher likes to torture the pretty boys of the world (see Brad Pitt , Jake Gyllenhaal , Ben Affleck , etc.), but I suppose that's the point of Fight Club . To make men out of boys who never knew how much more they could be. What I like about Leto in this film is the way he buddies up to Pitt's Tyler Durden in preparation for Project Mayhem, and makes Norton's narrator jealous in the process. It's Angel Face who brings to light Jack's insecurity and encourages him to reinforce his own power, which opens our eyes as to the timid insurance adjuster's true nature.

6. The Little Things

The Little Things is the whole reason we're doing this exercise, and it's a welcome addition to Leto's filmography. The movie itself isn't great, but Leto is mesmerizing as suspected serial killer Albert Sparma. The character doesn't really show up until halfway through the movie, but I couldn't take my eyes off Leto when he was on the screen. You never really know what game he's playing, which happens to be one of Leto's strengths, as he has long been something of an enigmatic chameleon. The actor delivers a twitchy, riveting performance here, and he saves the movie from being a complete bore. Who knows, maybe HBO Max will greenlight a prequel series so we can find out what made this guy so damn strange in the first place.

5. Chapter 27

This 2007 indie drama, in which Leto plays John Lennon 's killer Mark David Chapman , was the actor's attempt to reclaim his indie cred following a couple of goofy B-movies like Phone Booth and Lonely Hearts . Leto was hardly an obvious choice for the role, but he proved his commitment by gaining 67 pounds to play the obsessed fan who hung out on a New York City sidewalk waiting for his brush with infamy. Leto is both convincing and compelling as Chapman, and he does a good job of burrowing into the killer's head to help us understand his psychosis. While the actor's physical transformation is astounding, one can't overlook his twisted performance in this provocative film.

4. American Psycho

Yes, this is Christian Bale 's movie all the way, but Leto makes a strong impression as Paul Allen, and the scene in which Patrick Bateman kills him with an axe while singing the Huey Lewis and the News song "Hip to Be Square" is certainly its most iconic. Leto displays some of the oily charm that would serve him so well later in his career, and it's not hard to picture Leto playing the lead in this film, had it been made a couple years later. American Psycho is a satirical take on the serial killer thriller, and Leto's playful sense of humor serves him well here, especially during the dueling business card scene. There's also an air of refinement about him here that I'm surprised hasn't landed the actor more roles in costume dramas and other such period pieces.

3. Panic Room

David Fincher's 2002 thriller rarely gets the love it deserves when people talk about his filmography, and it may be his most rewatchable movie next to Seven . Leto plays one of three burglars who break into a high-tech home in Manhattan unaware that it is newly occupied by a single mother ( Jodie Foster ) and her teenage daughter ( Kristen Stewart ), who also happens to be diabetic. Leto is perfectly cast -- if not perfectly coiffed, given his cornrows -- as a spoiled brat named Junior (of course) whose decision to bring along his ex-con pal Raoul proves fatal. Leto's manic energy serves him well here as he strives desperately to be the leader of the pack, even though Forest Whitaker is clearly the brains of the operation, while Dwight Yoakam is the brawn. If you aren't either of those things, then what are you, really? In Fincher's world, you're the odd man out. Leto was a lot of fun while he lasted though, wasn't he?

2. Dallas Buyers Club

"But Jared Leto won an Oscar for this movie! How can it be #2?" Well, this is a list of Leto's best movies, not necessarily his best performances, and as great as he is here as Rayon, an HIV-positive transgender woman, Dallas Buyers Club is more of a Matthew McConaughey movie to me. Don't get me wrong, this is Leto's personal crowning achievement, and I thought his Oscar win was well-deserved, but like Schindler's List or 12 Years a Slave , this isn't a movie I tend to revisit. That said, director Jean-Marc Vallee deserves credit for getting career-best performances out of both McConaughey and Leto, who completed his physical transformation by losing 30 pounds, shaving his eyebrows and waxing his entire body. Leto radiates strength and sensitivity as Rayon, and I think that the serious nature of this film actually inspired he and McConaughey to step up and bring their A-games to set. Frankly, I'm thrilled they were both recognized for shining a light on such an important story.

1. Requiem for a Dream

It's weird, this isn't even a "Jared Leto movie" per se, as Darren Aronofsky and Ellen Burstyn are still the first people I think of when I think of Requiem for a Dream . However, when I think "Jared Leto movie," I think of Requiem for a Dream first and foremost, such is its near-supernatural hold over me. Maybe it's because I saw it when I was 16 and impressionable as a young moviegoer, but Requiem hasn't lost an ounce of its power over the past 20+ years, and Leto's Harry Goldfarb is our guide into this dangerous and deranged world of drug addiction. Seeing Leto spiral from fresh-faced and beautiful to sunken-eyed and broken remains as devastating as ever, and when Harry clutches at his amputated arm in the film's bravura finale, the actor really makes you feel the character's pain and grief in that moment. This early performance was a promising sign of things to come from Leto, and Requiem is still the most memorable movie he has ever done -- one that has stood the test of time, which is all an actor can really hope for. Bravo, I say!

Total Recall

Jared leto's best movies, in this week's total recall, we take a look back at the most acclaimed work of the suicide squad star..

jared leto time travel movie

This weekend, the movie everyone’s talking about is Suicide Squad — and while a number of cast members have earned critical applause for their efforts, it’s Jared Leto ‘s turn as the Joker that we’ve all been waiting to see. In honor of that moment’s eagerly anticipated arrival, we’re dedicating this week’s feature to a fond look back at some of the brightest critical highlights from the Oscar-winning star’s career, and the results add up to one admirably eclectic journey. It’s time for Total Recall!

  Prefontaine (1997) 56%

jared leto time travel movie

Leto was still Jordan Catalano from My So-Called Life in a lot of filmgoers’ eyes when he scored the leading role in Prefontaine  — but those who passed on director Steve James ‘ biopic about the titular Olympic runner missed the opportunity to see the results of Leto’s Method dedication for the first time on the big screen. As he would with subsequent roles, Leto dove in completely, adopting Prefontaine’s voice and running style; the end result, coupled with an already-eerie physical similarity, went a long way toward proving he was more than just a pretty face. Alas, the rest of the movie didn’t quite live up to Leto’s efforts, and many critics dismissed Prefontaine  as a TV-worthy hagiography — but it did have its fans, including Roger Ebert, who wrote, “Here is a sports movie in the tradition of the best sportswriting, where athletes are portrayed warts and all. You do not have to be nice to win races, but you have to be good.”

How to Make an American Quilt (1995) 63%

jared leto time travel movie

Fresh off My So-Called Life , Leto got his big-screen break with a supporting part in director Jocelyn Moorhouse ‘s adaptation of the Whitney Otto novel How to Make an American Quilt . Starring Winona Ryder (with whom Leto would later share screen time in Girl, Interrupted ), the movie offers an episodic look at the stories of a group of women who seek to soothe the nerves of a bride-to-be by sharing some hard-won wisdom from their own pasts. Leto’s role, as the hunky kid who engages in an interracial affair with his family’s servant, takes up a relatively brief portion of the movie — but it got him started at the movies, and played a part in a modest critical and commercial hit that, as the New York Times’ Caryn James wrote, “takes the makings of a limp ‘women’s weeper’ and as if by magic, spins them into gold.”

Lord of War (2005) 62%

jared leto time travel movie

How many chances does a guy get in life to play one half of a pair of arms-dealing brothers opposite Nicolas Cage ? Leto got his opportunity with Lord of War, writer-director Andrew Niccol ‘s 2005 war crime drama about a couple of crazy kids with a dream to make a bunch of money by selling lethal weapons to anyone with enough money to make the sale. The end result of years of research on Niccol’s part, it seethes with righteous anger without tipping over into didacticism — and offers Cage and Leto plenty of material to sink their dramatic teeth into, including an arc for Leto’s character that includes drug addiction in addition to morally reprehensible gun-running. “Niccol is no stranger to hot-button issues,” wrote Time Out’s Dave Calhoun, “but he outdoes his previous efforts by injecting this satire of war profiteering in the Halliburton age with a wicked arsenic wit.”

Mr. Nobody (2009) 67%

Leto’s fondness for projects lying off the beaten path was further reflected in Mr. Nobody, writer-director Jaco Van Dormael ‘s sci-fi drama about a 118-year-old man whose memories send him back to three critical junctures in his long life — and send the viewer wandering along alternate timelines that might have resulted from different decisions along the way. The movie bowed in Venice in 2009 and didn’t make it to the States for another four years, the kind of delay that often suggests more than a few fundamental flaws in a film — yet while it wasn’t exactly rapturously received by critics, reviews outlined a picture whose charms outweighed its circular, meandering narrative. “Never mind that several characters seem to gain or lose British accents throughout the course of the film,” wrote the Washington Post’s Michael O’Sullivan. “The lack of continuity only enhances the sense of deliciously dizzying disequilibrium.”

American Psycho (2000) 68%

jared leto time travel movie

It took nine years, but Bret Easton Ellis ’ controversial 1991 novel got the big-screen treatment with this adaptation, which cast Christian Bale as the loathsome, status-obsessed serial killer Patrick Bateman, Reese Witherspoon as his equally shallow girlfriend, and Leto as a smarmy co-worker whose superior business card sets off the movie’s killing spree. Though many of the cultural touchstones described in the book had faded by the time American Psycho reached the screen, its central observations — and the consumer culture that produced them — remained as timely as ever. Its torrent of generally unappealing behavior and horrific violence make Psycho an unpleasant film, but one that, in the words of Time’s Richard Corliss, “needs to be seen and appreciated, like a serpent in a glass cage.”

Panic Room (2002) 76%

jared leto time travel movie

A claustrophobic thriller with the heart of a B movie, Panic Room found director David Fincher wielding a stellar cast (including Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker , and a young Kristen Stewart ) and dropping them in the middle of a tightly wound, tension-filled storyline. Panic sets in almost immediately, with single parent Meg Altman (Foster) and her daughter Sarah (Stewart) spending their first night in the huge Manhattan brownstone Meg has just purchased; what Meg and Sarah don’t know is that their new home contains some very valuable hidden treasure — as well as a trio of very bad men (including the skin-crawling Dwight Yoakam and a mysteriously cornrowed Leto) who will stop at nothing to steal it. Ultimately, Panic Room is mostly just a nail-biter — albeit one assembled with uncommon flair. “This is just a big, dumb, commercial suspenser,” admitted Empire’s Caroline Westbrook, “but it’s one of the best for ages, reminding us that it is still possible to make a high-quality piece of popcorn entertainment.”

The Thin Red Line (1998) 80%

jared leto time travel movie

Marking director Terrence Malick ’s return from a 20-year absence and featuring the work of a stellar ensemble cast that included Leto , Woody Harrelson , Adrien Brody , George Clooney , John Cusack , and Sean Penn , The Thin Red Line  was the film buff event of 1998. Even with a 170-minute running time, there wasn’t enough Line to go around — in fact, during all the whittling between its five-hour first cut and the theatrical version, Malick excised entire performances by Martin Sheen , Gary Oldman , Billy Bob Thornton , Viggo Mortensen and others, meaning that even if Leto’s performance as Second Lieutenant Floyd Whyte isn’t his biggest role, it’s really saying something that it ended up in the movie at all. And for most critics, there was no arguing with the end result; as Norman Green wrote for Film.com, “It wrestles with complexity, speaks to us in poetry, weaves multiple narrative strands into a tapestry, opens the festering wounds of war and gazes inside without blinking.”

Requiem for a Dream (2000) 78%

jared leto time travel movie

Like the Hubert Selby, Jr. novel from which it’s adapted, Darren Aronofsky ‘s Requiem for a Dream is certainly not for everyone. An unflinching look at the misery of addiction, Requiem follows the hellish descents of a widow named Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), her son Harry ( Jared Leto ), his girlfriend Marion ( Jennifer Connelly ), and Harry’s friend Tyrone ( Marlon Wayans ). After 102 minutes, all four characters have been pretty well run through the wringer; Burstyn winds up institutionalized, Leto loses an arm, Wayans has to go cold turkey in a jail cell — and Connelly crosses paths with Big Tim, played with thoroughly skeevy elan by Keith David. Good taste prevents us from getting into the exact nature of their relationship; suffice it to say that Connelly’s character arc demonstrates that some people will do just about anything to get their fix, and David’s performance reminds us that other people will stoop at nothing to take advantage of an addict. “Never have we been taken this close to the edge, and never have the characters teetering over it elicited so much sympathy,” wrote Eugene Novikov of Film Blather. ” Requiem is difficult to watch, but it richly rewards those who stay with it.”

Fight Club (1999) 80%

jared leto time travel movie

Yes, we are going to talk about Fight Club . Initially rejected by critics and ignored by audiences, director David Fincher ’s third feature steadily built a cult following on DVD; these days, it’s widely regarded as one of the best films of the ‘90s, which not only helped reaffirm Fincher as a director of stylishly thoughtful fare, but established the Hollywood bona fides of author Chuck Palahniuk , from whose novel the movie was adapted. The plot follows the eager descent of a nameless protagonist ( Edward Norton ) into the anti-establishment crusade of Tyler Durden ( Brad Pitt ), who organizes the titular underground brawling network whose participants include the ill-fated Angel Face ( Leto ). On a deeper level, the story functions as a bloody, black-humored indictment of consumer culture, but more importantly, in the words of ReelView’s James Berardinelli, “ Fight Club is a memorable and superior motion picture — a rare movie that does not abandon insight in its quest to jolt the viewer.”

Dallas Buyers Club (2013) 92%

jared leto time travel movie

Nothing screams “for your consideration” like an actor physically transforming himself for a role, to the point that it’s become something of a signal for filmgoers cynical enough to be suspicious of a star’s motivations when taking a part. But as often as not, that commitment pays off; just ask Jared Leto, whose rather frightening pre-shooting regimen included dropping more than 40 pounds to portray Rayon, the transgender HIV-positive woman whose story lends a poignant anchor to Jean-Marc Vallée ‘s fact-based Dallas Buyers Club . Academy voters ultimately honored the movie with six nominations — three of which it won, including Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey and Best Supporting Actor for Leto . “ Dallas Buyers Club  represents the best of what independent film on a limited budget can achieve,” wrote Rex Reed for the New York Observer. “Powerful, enlightening and not to be missed.”

The 15 Best Jared Leto Movies

Yes, we know he sings, plays guitar, and writes lyrics, but this is a list of Leto's best movies.

preview for Jared Leto swears on The Chris Moyles Show

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Believe it or not, this was the first film Leto ever won an award for an on-camera performance. He stepped away from acting for seven years to pursue his dreams—touring and making music as the lead singer for the rock-band 30 Seconds To Mars. For this role, Leto lost 40 pounds and waxed his entire body in order to accurately play a transgender woman named Rayon dying of AIDS. Rayon’s heartbreaking encounter with her father soon before she dies is hard to watch with a dry eye. This is undoubtedly Leto’s best performance and earned him his Oscar win for best supporting actor.

American Psycho (2000)

One of the best films to ever exist, and no, it’s not because I may or may not have a poster in my room of Paul Allen’s business card. Twenty-two years after its release this film is still referenced everywhere in pop culture. “Let’s see Paul Allen’s card,” Christian Bale famously says. Unfortunately for Leto, he gets axed to his death by Huey Lewis’ “Hip To Be Square.”

Artifact (2012)

Not a movie but a documentary. Leto steps away from the characters and is simply himself in this filming capturing the time when Thirty Seconds To Mars was recording their third album “This Is War.” During the months they were making the album, the band was ironically sued for thirty-million dollars by their record label EMI. Also, fun fact! The documentary was actually directed by Leto but he uses the stage name Bartholomew Cubbins, a Dr. Seuss character.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

This has been the most critically successful film of Leto’s since Dallas Buyers Club. It received a high 88 percentile on Rotten Tomatoes, rightfully so as it’s one of the most visually stunning films to come out in the past decade. Also, Leto plays another villain, Niander Wallace who is blind. And in true Jared Leto fashion—he blinded himself during the filming

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

A film too disturbing to watch twice. Directed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) , this thrilling watch takes you on the ride of living vicariously through the life of three young people addicted to heroin, and an older woman who grew a dependency to amphetamines prescribed by her doctor as “diet pills.” All of which failed to pursue their dreams due to their crippling addictions In preparation for the role, Leto spent time with heroin users and was said to have shot up water in his veins to have some sort of understanding of what it’s like for people using the drug.

Mr. Nobody (2009)

This is definitely one of the weirdest yet most interesting Jared Leto movies on this list. Leto is the longest living man on Earth and as he’s come to his old age he imagines what his life could’ve been like—in three different scenarios.

Fight Club (1999)

A classic in David Fincher’s discography. Leto bleached his hair and eyebrows to play Angel Face for his first time working with Fincher. Again, not a major role, but another majorly successful film to add to his list of experience.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)

The redemption to Leto’s hate he received from playing the Joker in Suicide Squad. The Joker appears right at the end of the movie to share some words with Batfleck. Interesting to say this film didn’t get Leto anywhere near as much hate as Suicide Squad did… almost because the movie itself is just better.

Chapter 27 (2007)

Leto's famous “method” acting career really got its start here. He downed heated up pints of haagen dazs ice cream mixed with soy sauce and olive oil before bed and gained 67 pounds to accurately portray Mark Chapman, the man who assassinated John Lennon. While it’s not the most exciting watch on a Friday night, Leto’s preparation made his performance a stand out in his career.

Panic Room (2002)

This marked the second time David Fincher and Leto teamed up on a project. I believe this movie solidified a huge change in Leto’s career as the role shift’s the public’s perception of him as just a pretty face to an actual serious actor. After all, what’s more serious than a home invasion movie, right?

Girl, Interrupted (1999)

Winona Ryder, Angela Jolie, Brittney Murphy and Jared Leto, need I say anything else? Even though Leto is only in a few scenes in the film he plays the love interest of Ryder’s character in one of the most memorable movies of the late ‘90.

The Cool and the Crazy (1994)

A film no one really talks about. While it has its flaws as a TV movie, Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) and Leto make a captivating watch as a couple whose desires for adultery turn into a violent predicament.

House of Gucci (2021)

Surprisingly enough Leto didn’t go full method for this role and gained weight to play Paolo Gucci instead he used prosthetics. Yes, this film has received his share of memes online. However, you deny it didn’t leave you with wanting to see Lady Gaga and Leto collab together again in some way.

The Little Things (2020)

Jared Leto in another antagonist role—we love that! Despite the reviews, The Little Things is a fun watch if you’re into thriller/crime movies. It’s also a star-packed cast that includes Denzel Washington and Rami Malik as the protagonists—detectives.

My So Called Life (1994-1995)

A tv show instead of a movie, however, the character of Jordan Catalano is what started Leto’s character. Yes, many young girls only watched the show to stare at him. It still remains a highly talked about coming-of-age show referenced in pop culture.

Jared Leto's 10 best movie performances of all time, ranked

  • Since the late 1990s, Jared Leto has built an impressive filmography taking on challenging roles.
  • Here we highlight his 10 best, including "Dallas Buyers Club" and his latest, "The Little Things."
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories .

10. Mark David Chapman in "Chapter 27" (2007)

jared leto time travel movie

Leto underwent his most dramatic physical change for this role, gaining 67 pounds to play the man who killed John Lennon. In the movie, Leto tries his best to deliver a performance that makes us understand better who Chapman really was, but most didn't go for it.

An online petition was created in opposition to the movie and Leto himself suffered from gout due to the weight gain.

9. The Joker in "Suicide Squad" (2016)

jared leto time travel movie

Leto puts his unique twist on the iconic DC Comics villain. His over-the-top performance got mixed reactions from fans and critics.

But to be fair, he featured in only a few scenes in "Suicide Squad," so it's hard to make a real judgment on his performance. We wait to see if Leto will have another shot at the role in a project where he'll get more screen time.

8. Paul Gardener in "Urban Legend" (1998)

jared leto time travel movie

Even Jared Leto couldn't hide from the late '90s slasher movie craze.

Here he stars alongside Joshua Jackson, Rebecca Gayheart, and Tara Reid to play the leader of a group of friends who are terrorized by urban legends that pick them off one by one.

Made early in his career, Leto builds up some nice clout thanks to this one.

7. Tobias Jacobs in "Girl, Interrupted" (1999)

jared leto time travel movie

A year after "Urban Legend," Leto landed a sweet role playing the ex-boyfriend of Winona Ryder's character. Toby (Leto) tries to convince Susanna (Ryder) to run away with him to Canada, but she puts her foot down and stays at the mental hospital she's in.

The heated exchange the two have highlights Leto's dramatic chops, if you can keep yourself from laughing at the ridiculous fake beard he has on for the role.

6. Angel Face in "Fight Club" (1999)

jared leto time travel movie

This is another small but memorable role for Leto.

In David Fincher's classic, Leto plays one of the younger fight club members who the Narrator beats up so badly during a fight that his face becomes disfigured.

Leto would gain a much larger role in a Fincher movie three years later.

5. Steve Prefontaine in "Prefontaine" (1997)

jared leto time travel movie

In his first leading man role, Leto plays American long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine, who before his untimely death at the age of 24 was one of the faces that helped launch the "running boom" in the 1970s.

It's one of the first instances in which Leto shows he's not just a pretty face as he perfectly captures Prefontaine's fiery persona.

4. Albert Sparma in "The Little Things" (2021)

jared leto time travel movie

Leto's latest role is one you just can't turn away from.

Playing a man suspected of being a serial killer, Leto just takes over the movie once he shows up thanks to his long greasy hair and a disturbing look — it doesn't seem like he ever blinks.

3. Junior in "Panic Room" (2002)

jared leto time travel movie

After his performance in "Fight Club," Fincher gave Leto the standout villain role in his next thriller.

Leto, Forest Whitaker, and Dwight Yoakam play three burglars out to find a fortune in a house owned by Jodie Foster and a young Kristen Stewart.

2. Rayon in "Dallas Buyers Club" (2013)

jared leto time travel movie

Leto earned an Oscar win for his captivating role as a trans woman with HIV who befriends the movie's lead, Ron (played by Matthew McConaughey).

But this is not his best role ever.

1. Harry Goldfarb in "Requiem for a Dream" (2000)

jared leto time travel movie

Leto plays a guy from Coney Island struggling with a heroin addiction that spirals out of control leading him to lose not only his girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly), who is a fellow addict, but also his arm.

Thanks to the direction by Darren Aronofsky, Leto delivers an astounding performance that would cause his career to soar.

27 Movies Starring Oscar Winner Jared Leto

Updated on 3/14/2022 at 3:50 PM

jared leto time travel movie

Jared Leto may have gotten his start on television with the cult classic "My So-Called Life," but the actor quickly made a name for himself as a star of the silver screen. Leto — who won an Oscar in 2014 for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club" — has a huge filmography under his belt, ranging from indie films to box-office hits. Those movies include his turns in superhero films — the actor has played iconic comic book characters like DC's the Joker and Marvel's Morbius — and his portrayals of real-life people, like Paolo Gucci in 2021's "House of Gucci."

Throughout his career, Leto has worked with some of the most talented actors in Hollywood, from Christian Bale in "American Psycho" to Denzel Washington in "The Little Things" and Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in "Blade Runner 2049." In addition to his Academy Award win for "Dallas Buyers Club" (which also starred Matthew McConaughey), Leto has been nominated twice for a Golden Globe and five times for a Screen Actors Guild Award. Ahead, check out 27 movies starring Leto.

Though much of the cast returned for 2021's "The Suicide Squad," directed by James Gunn, Leto did not.

"Zack Snyder's Justice League" (2021)

However, Leto did reprise his role as the Joker for "Zack Snyder's Justice League," Snyder's director's cut of the 2017 film. Leto and the Joker didn't appear in the original version, but Snyder filmed a new epilogue for the movie featuring Leto's Joker facing off with Ben Affleck's Batman . It's the only time the hero and his iconic foe have met in the DCEU.

"Dallas Buyers Club" (2013)

Leto's character is Rayon, a fictional trans woman who helps Woodroof. Though Leto won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role, his casting has been criticized by many trans actors and activists who believe that trans people should be the ones portraying trans characters .

"Morbius" (2022)

Jared Leto

Highest Rated: 100% Closer to the Edge (2011)

Lowest Rated: Not Available

Birthday: Dec 26, 1971

Birthplace: Bossier City, Louisiana, USA

Actor and musician Jared Leto got his start in the beloved but ill-fated TV series "My So-Called Life" (ABC, 1994-95), but along with his co-star Claire Danes quickly transitioned to feature films. He earned a solid acting reputation with supporting roles in frequently off-beat films and grew into a lead actor known for his daring choices. For several years he alternated between the life of an actor -- immersing himself in roles to the point that his in-character behavior as The Joker during the filming of "Suicide Squad" (2016) reportedly alarmed and upset his castmates -- and the life of a rock star, touring and recording with his successful emo band, 30 Seconds to Mars. Equally captivating was his celebrated love life, which, to the delight of tabloid readers, included an array of Hollywood beauties, including Cameron Diaz, Lindsay Lohan and Scarlett Johansson. But it was his increasingly confident work as an actor, culminating in his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win as a transgender prostitute in "Dallas Buyers Club" (2013), that made him one of his generation's most interesting movie stars.

Jared Leto's 10 best movie performances of all time, ranked

Jared Leto's 10 best movie performances of all time, ranked

Jared Leto.Christopher Polk/Getty

  • Since the late 1990s, Jared Leto has built an impressive filmography taking on challenging roles.
  • Here we highlight his 10 best, including "Dallas Buyers Club" and his latest, "The Little Things."

10. Mark David Chapman in "Chapter 27" (2007)

10. Mark David Chapman in "Chapter 27" (2007)

9. The Joker in "Suicide Squad" (2016)

8. Paul Gardener in "Urban Legend" (1998)

6. Angel Face in "Fight Club" (1999)

4. Albert Sparma in "The Little Things" (2021)

2. Rayon in "Dallas Buyers Club" (2013)

Leto earned an Oscar win for his captivating role as a trans woman with HIV who befriends the movie's lead, Ron (played by Matthew McConaughey).

But this is not his best role ever.

1. Harry Goldfarb in "Requiem for a Dream" (2000)

1. Harry Goldfarb in "Requiem for a Dream" (2000)

Tron 3 release date confirmed in time for major franchise anniversary.

The Tron 3 release date is finally confirmed by Disney over 14 years after the sci-fi franchise was last seen on the big screen with Legacy.

First Tron 3 Image Reveals Full Look At Jared Leto's Mystery Character Decked Out In Red Light Suit

Tron 3 officially starts filming after frustrating delay.

  • Tron 3 , titled Tron: Ares , is finally set to release on October 10, 2025, after a lengthy development process.
  • Jared Leto stars as the lead character Ares in the sequel to 2010's Legacy .
  • Directed by Joachim Rønning, this sci-fi action adventure film continues the legacy of the Tron franchise by Disney, while also offering a twist on its formula.

After a lengthy development cycle, Tron 3 has finally landed a release date. The third installment in the cult favorite sci-fi franchise will twist its typical formula as it follows Jared Leto's titular computer program as he's sent to the real world on an unknown mission, pushing humanity to confront the nature of A.I. Helmed by Maleficent: Mistresses of Evil 's Joachim Rønning, the ensemble Tron: Ares cast also includes Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.

Just a few months after production began on the sci-fi threequel, The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Tron: Ares is officially releasing on October 10, 2025. The movie's release date will put it in theaters just shy of 15 years of when its predecessor, Legacy , was released, itself having taken over 28 years to be developed and made. The release date confirmation also comes just over a month after the first image was revealed of Leto's titular character, with the promise of a 2025 release window.

Tron: Ares' Anniversary Release Could Be Perfect

A late 2025 release date already seemed likely for Tron: Ares considering the movie only just began filming in January 2024. Even with the story's setting seeming to primarily be in the real world, there's likely to be a lengthy post-production process for the visual effects associated with the sci-fi franchise, with an early 2025 release having necessitated a crunch that leads to lesser quality assurance, backlash from employees, as already seen with animators at Marvel, and skepticism from audiences.

Is TRON: Ares A Sequel To TRON Legacy?

While the 15-year wait between movies could often be a hindrance for franchises, Tron: Ares releasing just in time for Legacy 's anniversary could prove a promising plan for Disney. Even if the threequel is only loosely connected to its predecessors, Disney could hold special marathons in theaters in the lead-up to Ares ' debut by re-releasing the first two movies. Considering Tron: Legacy in particular has built a devoted fanbase in the years since, it would be an effective way to entice them for the new movie.

Another big reason why Tron: Ares ' October 2025 release date is looking perfect for the threequel is the current lack of major competition in the month. At the time of writing, the only movies set for release in October 2025 are Maggie Gyllenhaal's Bride of Frankenstein twist, The Bride! , and a new Avatar: The Last Airbender animated movie, which is releasing the same weekend as Ares . However, with no other competition for the rest of the month, and early November only bringing the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blade reboot, Tron: Ares could land in a sweet spot to become a hit for Disney.

Tron: Ares is the third film in the Tron franchise created by Steven Lisberger in the early '80s. The movie is a direct sequel to 2010's Tron: Legacy and stars Jared Leto in the lead role of Ares. Jesse Wigutow penned the screenplay for Disney, who previously worked on the 2015 TV Movie, The Prince.

Morbius: Release date, trailer and everything we know about the Jared Leto superhero movie

Jared Leto’s Morbius is joining the ranks of Sony’s gallery of Spider-Man villains with their own movie.

Morbius

Welcome to the big screen Jared Leto’s Morbius , the latest Spider-Man villain (or more accurately in this context anti-hero) that will receive his very own standalone movie.

Because of some complicated details surrounding character rights between Sony and Marvel, Morbius joins Venom and other planned Spider-Man spinoffs that are more adjacent to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU , but as No Way Home showed us, that doesn’t mean characters can’t cross over now and again.

So, with all that in mind, here is everything that we know about Morbius .

Morbius release date

Morbius will premiere exclusively in movie theaters on April 1.

The journey for for Morbius to get to the big screen has been a long one. Initially, Sony was planning to release Morbius in July 2020. Of course, the pandemic caused many movies to delay their planned releases. For Morbius , it was originally moved to March 19, 2021, before being pushed again to October 8, 2021. However, Sony eventually put Venom: Let There Be Carnage in that October date and pushed Morbius to January 2022, ultimately to January 28. One more push moved Morbius for the final time to its April 1 release.

Morbius reviews

Morbius is not getting a very warm welcome. What to Watch's Morbius review calls the movie a "bland, poorly directed, poorly written mess" that sucks the life out of Sony's Spider-Man universe.

Others aren't being any more forgiving. Morbius currently (as of March 31) has a 16% "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 37 on Metacritic .

We've rounded up some of the scathing critic comments about Morbius for you to give a read.

Is there a Morbius post-credit scene?

Yes, there is a Morbius post-credit scene. Would it be a superhero movie if there weren't?

In fact, there are two post-credit scenes, but they both happen while the credits are rolling, so you won't need to stick around to the very end in fear of missing anything.

Who is Michael Morbius

Michael Morbius is a classic example of a Marvel character who started out as a tragic villain only to eventually become more of an anti-hero.

Michael Morbius begins as a brilliant scientist, but he suffers from a rare blood disease. In an attempt to find a cure, vampire bat DNA is mixed into his blood, transforming him into a pseudo-vampire with a lust for blood. Originally, Morbius was a villain for both Spider-Man and Blade, but he eventually became a vigilante who strives to satisfy his need to consume blood by stalking bad guys.

From all of the early footage of the upcoming Morbius movie, it certainly looks like the character is staying pretty close to that origin, though will likely more immediately be targeting bad guys as his primary prey.

A new video features Jared Leto talking about the origins of character and why he thinks it will be an exciting one for fans:

Morbius plot

Morbius is a good old-fashioned origin story for the character, though we do know that there will be some larger allusions to the superhero universe Sony is building with other Spider-Man villains/anti-heroes, most notably Venom.

Here is the official plot for Morbius :

"Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?"

Jared Leto as Michael Morbius

Morbius

Oscar-winner Jared Leto stars as Dr. Michael Morbius in the movie, another dip into the superhero pool for the actor.

Leto portrayed The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad and then got to reprise the role in an epilogue scene in Zack Snyder’s The Justice League that was released on HBO Max in 2021. Leto made his Joker an unhinged character and infamously continued his character’s antics even when the camera’s weren’t rolling.

The character of Morbius isn’t a straight villain or as wild as Joker, but he is still a character with a unique background that will allow Leto to make some interesting choices. His affinity for such characters extends beyond the superhero genre, as he gave a very large performance in House of Gucci .

Morbius cast

Leto is the lead of the movie, but he’s got a solid supporting cast behind him, including a major actor already familiar with the Spider-Man universe.

Among the Morbius cast are Adria Arjona ( Pacific Rim: Uprising , True Detective ), Jared Harris ( Foundation , Chernobyl ), Matt Smith ( Last Night in Soho , Doctor Who ), Tyrese Gibson ( Fast & Furious ) and Al Madrigal ( The Way Back , The Daily Show ).

As for the actor with the Spider-Man connection, Michael Keaton is appearing in the movie in an expected reprisal of his role as Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture, who was the primary villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming . With the divisions between Sony and Marvel universes, we’ll have to see if this is the same or a different version of Toomes, but Keaton’s appearance in Morbius is part of Sony’s continued push to create a connection between all these movies.

Morbius director

Daniel Espinosa served as the director of Morbius . The Swedish filmmaker got his start in Hollywood by directing the 2012 Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds thriller Safe House , followed up by the Tom Hardy-led Child 44 and the sci-fi movie Life , which starred Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson.

Morbius trailer

Sony has released the final trailer for Morbius , in which it makes a few exciting allusions to the Spider-Man universe . Check it out right here:

Jared Leto Talks Stargazing, Songwriting, and the Power of Positivity

Jonathan Wells August 28, 2023

Jared Leto is from Mars — and we’re all from Venus. That’s how it feels most of the time. He’s one of the last true enigmas: a star who, despite spending almost 30 years in front of the camera, remains curiously out of focus. The on-set stories, of course, are legendary. Tales of Leto’s intense character commitment have rocketed him to an almost mythical method acting status. These exploits have seen the actor transformed into one of the most surreal, celebrated, and paradoxical performers working today, embodying everyone from arms dealers and serial killers to supervillains and vampires. And, thanks to this unique talent for shapeshifting, it’s very likely that you’ve seen scenes, shows, or even full-length films starring Leto — and not even realized who you were watching.

And then there’s his music. Thirty Seconds to Mars, a band coformed and fronted by Leto, has been releasing its genre-twisting tracks for over two decades. Yet, when the group started out, the actor refused to use his Hollywood pull to push the band into the spotlight. As a result, Leto has always remained slightly obscured in the musical world too. That could be why the press and the public, left largely in the dark all these years, have tended to typecast Leto as a sort of superlunary luminary — an acclaimed yet alien presence in the entertainment industry who manages to hover, ever so slightly, beyond the celeb-sphere.

“There’s a vulnerability, an intimacy, and an intensity in my voice on this album that I haven’t heard from myself ever before.” Jared Leto

Today, Leto is in Los Angeles. Standing in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and his fellow striking actors, the Vancouver-based production was paused on his latest film several days ago. But we’re not here to discuss acting. We’re here to talk music, and the sixth studio album from Thirty Seconds to Mars. Dreamed up during lockdown, It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day finally arrives on September 15 and promises to knock fans’ pre-launch preconceptions out of orbit. But that’s just the way Leto likes it. Because, he tells SHARP , while the band’s music has morphed and mutated over time — warping its way from cosmic space rock, through expanses of symphonic electronica, to headbanging heavy metal — this latest album steers things onto a fresh, techno-pop trajectory and reveals parts of his own character he’s always kept hidden.

“You know,” Leto considers, “I think that it’s a new chapter for Thirty Seconds to Mars. We take so long to make albums that we change a lot. The world changes. Technology changes. The way we record changes. The place you live changes. Maybe the type of guitar you like to play changes. Your voice changes. But all of that is kind of great. It can really push you to new places.”

Of course, Thirty Seconds to Mars — which Leto founded with his brother Shannon in 1998 — has always had an intrepid streak. Several past tracks, in particular, embraced the extraterrestrial promise of the band’s name, transporting fans to “Jupiter,” “100 Suns,” and the “Edge of the Earth.” A 2013 single, “Up in the Air,” even had its first play onboard the International Space Station, hitching a skyward ride on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. But the latest album, Leto says, is more introspective than intergalactic — and brings the band back down to earth.

“There’s a vulnerability, an intimacy, and an intensity in my voice on this album that I haven’t heard from myself ever before,” he says. “And people have asked me — multiple people — when I’ve played them some of these songs, they’ve said: ‘Is that you?’ Which I take as a compliment, that I’m still, somehow, discovering new parts of myself. I think that’s a good thing.”

It’s the End of the World opens with the pulsating, high-powered “Stuck” — an upbeat, anthemic answer to the down days and doldrums of the pandemic. The album switches gears after the first few tracks, offering up the contemplative, slower-paced “Seasons” and “Get Up Kid,” before building back to “Avalanche,” the final blood-pumping, heart-thumping number (and Leto’s favourite track). There are eleven songs in all, and some of the most experimental echo the band’s critically acclaimed, confidently nonconformist 2009 album This Is War.

“I think it’s great to be free from any constraints,” says Leto, “because it would be a shame to just make This Is War: Part II — unless you were really trying to make This Is War: Part II . Which we have thought about, actually. That would be interesting. And I haven’t seen anyone do a ‘Volume Two’ in quite a while. But we’ve also been thinking about making a full-on rock record. You know, make a rock record and then that’s it, the definitive piece of our career. Say goodbye, or something. I don’t know.”

It’s strange to hear Leto speak this way. For someone so successful, his behaviour often seems incredibly mercurial and unpredictable — so much so, in fact, that we assume he must be following some meticulously mapped-out schedule; a strict plan that merely gives the illusion of impulsivity, but actually stretches far into the future — but we could be wrong. Perhaps Leto can operate on a level of calm and cool that’s beyond our collective comprehension. Maybe he’s just a low-strung, flow-going guy who dabbles and dances his way across the arts and only picks the projects that take his fancy. The evidence would suggest this is the case. For example, Leto’s haunting turn in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club was the first acting role he accepted in almost four years — and he took home an Oscar for his efforts. But this lifelong love affair with the arts didn’t begin with film, nor with music.

“We grew up around a lot of artists,” Leto explains. “And I always thought that I would be a painter, or a sculptor, or a photographer. But I still do all kinds of design work and photography. It’s really the same thing at the end of the day — it all comes from the same place.

It’s creative problem solving; bringing an idea, a thought, a dream to life. There are different techniques, but it all comes from the same place.” Leto has directed over a dozen music videos for Thirty Seconds to Mars, and he’s involved in the creation of every album’s artwork: “Involved is probably an understatement!” he laughs. For It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day , Leto created ten covers, each using a photograph he had captured of a cloud formation or sunset. From hundreds of shots, Leto curated the final covers but admits that skyscapes weren’t always the plan. Initially, he planned to create the record sleeve using AI-assisted artwork.

“But then I went in the totally opposite direction,” he shrugs. “Something really subjective and totally personal. Something beautiful and seemingly mundane. But something we’re also connected to and is so close to us. I thought it was the perfect album for a series of covers, and the idea was really based around the vinyl because people like to collect those.”

“I’m an optimistic person. In our music, we’ve explored a lot of the darker sides of life — and we’ve still got those elements on this album — but it’s nice to explore, you know, a beautiful summer’s day. You don’t always have to be caught in the rain.” Jared Leto

“Selfishly,” he adds, “I thought it would be great to get ten of these myself and put them on my wall — have a de facto modern art piece. I borrowed that idea from Warhol. He would always do a series of 10, usually very similar images, repeated. And that’s the gist of it.” It’s no surprise to hear Leto invoke Andy Warhol. The two have had similar cross-cultural impact and Leto has even been tapped to play the famed pop artist in an upcoming biopic.

It’s one of two design-tinged, true life tales coming up for Leto; the second will see him adopt the iconic ponytail of the late Karl Lagerfeld. (Earlier this year, at the annual Met Gala, Lagerfeld’s legacy was the theme. Leto commissioned a hyperreal cat costume for the event so he could resemble Choupette, Lagerfeld’s beloved pet cat, who was left $1.6 million in the designer’s will).

But Leto’s next big screen effort, and the project paused due to the actor’s strike, is Tron: Ares. It’s the third instalment in the franchise that first booted up back in 1983, when cult classic Tron hypnotized Hollywood with its new CGI techniques and an electrifying soundtrack from digital music pioneer Wendy Carlos. Thrumming with Moog synthesizers and electro-pop influences, the original film’s soundtrack shares much of its rhythmic, robotic character with Leto’s latest Thirty Seconds to Mars album — the music that he and his brother began creating in the dystopian days of 2020.

“We’re used to touring all over the place, travelling a lot,” says Leto. “So being in one spot like that for a period of time was pretty unique for a lot of us — especially for my brother and I. It was such a tough time for so many people around the world, but there was also something incredible about it. So we started working on the music, and on this album.” For a pandemic album, it’s uplifting stuff. Whether you zero in on the lyrics (“Get up, kid, swing and a miss / But life’s around the bend”) or just enjoy its syncopated, offbeat optimism, the record feels considerably happier than other albums produced during lockdown — from Grimes’ stark Miss Anthropocene to The Strokes’ ultra-introspective The New Abnormal. Was this sense of positivity deliberate?

“I think so,” says Leto. “When we started, we had a lot of darker songs, which reflected the isolation of that period of time. But I’m an optimistic person. In our music, we’ve explored a lot of the darker sides of life — and we’ve still got those elements on this album — but it’s nice to explore, you know, a beautiful summer’s day. You don’t always have to be caught in the rain.”

Whatever the subject of his songs, Leto likes to know they’ll be listened to in order. When he first met Spotify CEO Daniel Ek in early 2008, Leto asked the technologist why his streaming service defaulted to shuffle when a listener would hit play on an album. Many years later, in 2021, Adele successfully lobbied Ek for the removal of this feature. “And good for her for nudging that to happen,” says Leto. “I think that’s been a really nice thing for people who care about sequence. Because artists can really put a lot of time and energy and thought into the sequence of an album, and certainly there are classic albums, catalogue albums, where sequence was everything — albums where songs were thought of as chapters in a book. And it would be very strange to move chapters in a book around and then give it to someone to read.”

In all of his artistic endeavours, Leto longs to take us on a journey — mapping out our emotional experience and manoeuvring us between moods. Performing live with Thirty Seconds to Mars is, by far, the subject he speaks most effusively and engagingly about. (The band currently holds the Guinness World Record for the ‘Most Shows Performed During an Album Cycle,’ set during 2010’s “Into the Wild Tour”). And Leto admits that, even early on in the songwriting process, he and his brother consider how songs will translate to the stage. “We’re thinking: what kind of experience can we give people when they come to a Thirty Seconds to Mars show? Because we want to give them a really varied experience. We’ve been rehearsing for Lollapalooza, and it’s really interesting to have these new songs in the set. It adds a new kind of energy.”

“When I meet people, I’m always telling them that they won’t really know me until they see me on stage at a Thirty Seconds to Mars show. Because I think it reveals a lot of who you are. These songs are very personal.” Jared Leto

And Leto’s live performances are nothing if not energetic. Whilst he’s never acted on stage — “I have no desire to do it at this point. I think a lot of actors have that itch because they don’t get to be on stage. Fortunately, I do.” — theatricality comes naturally to Leto. He bounds around, wearing flamboyant, multi-coloured outfits and putting huge crowds under singalong spells. But is the man we see on stage Jared himself — or is it some Martian creation; a performative persona not unlike David Bowie’s alien rock star Ziggy Stardust, or spaced-out astronaut Major Tom?

“You know, I wish it was a David Bowie thing,” laughs Leto. “It’s funny, I said that to someone yesterday, that I’ve always wanted to create a character. And he said, ‘Don’t you do that all the time, when you’re making movies?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I guess you’re right.’ But for me, Thirty Seconds to Mars has always been a revealing of oneself. When I meet people, I’m always telling them that they won’t really know me until they see me on stage at a Thirty Seconds to Mars show. Because I think it reveals a lot of who you are. These songs are very personal.”

Which means they probably offer the most authentic, accurate representation of Leto we’re ever likely to get, because, unlike the performer’s filmmaking moonshots and method acting missions, these songs are sung free from constraints of character — and bring Leto finally into focus. “They’re coming from a perspective of someone who’s not imaginary,” he says, simply. “It’s my perspective. It’s real.”

Jared Leto's Tron: Ares Finally Sets Theatrical Release Date

The new Tron movie, Tron: Ares , now has an official release date. After it was previously reported that the movie would be released in 2025, it's now been revealed that Tron: Ares , starring Jared Leto as the titular character, will be hitting theaters on Oct. 10, 2025 .

Per Variety , Tron: Ares was one of a handful of Disney movies getting official release dates. Another franchise sequel, Toy Story 5 , has been dated to release on June 19, 2026, while the Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu , will be released on May 22, 2026. Also revealed is the delay of the live-action Moana movie, which was pushed back from its summer 2025 release to a new date of July 10, 2026.

The 35 Strongest DC Characters

Jared Leto ( Morbius ) plays Ares in the film, leading the cast. The movie also stars Gillian Anderson ( The X-Files ) , Evan Peters ( Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story ), Greta Lee ( The Morning Show ), Jodie Turner-Smith ( White Noise ), Arturo Castro ( WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story ), Cameron Monaghan ( Gotham ), and Hasan Minhaj ( Haunted Mansion ). Joachim Rønning ( Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ) directed, and Leto serves as a producer with Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger.

“I’m excited to be part of the Tron franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world," Rønning said of his involvement in the movie in a statement. " Tron: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

All Robots in the Terminator Franchise, Ranked by Strength

Tron: Ares will be a standalone sequel to the previous films in the franchise. It follows the original installment, released in 1982, along with the 2010 sequel, Tron Legacy . The official logline for the film reads, " Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings."

Tron 3 Gets a Release Date After Its Production Delay

The strikes of 2023 had an effect on the production of Tron: Ares . Its filming was delayed because of the strikes, and on the day he was supposed to start shooting in August 2023, the director expressed how eager he was to get to work in a social media post . That made it further uncertain just how soon it would be until the film would see its release, and it hasn't been until now that its date was finally put on the calendar.

Tron: Ares will premiere in movie theaters on July 10, 2026.

Pat Sajak replaced as 'Wheel of Fortune' host? Jared Leto steps in for April Fools' Day prank

jared leto time travel movie

Relax "Wheel of Fortune" fans — Jared Leto has not replaced Pat Sajak as host.

Leto gave fans an April Fools' Day start stepping out arm-in-arm with regular co-host Vanna White at the beginning of Monday's "Wheel of Fortune." It was like Leto belonged on the famed set over which Sajak has ruled for more than four decades.

The "Joker" actor even got the big-time, deep-voiced announcer introduction: "Here are the stars of our show, Jared Leto and Vanna White."

Wait, what?

Leto told White, "Have a great show and see you soon," before taking his place at host Sajak's regular game spot and just got into the "Wheel of Fortune" business.

"All right everybody, grab those devices, it's time to give away some money," Leto told the three gamely smiling contestants. "It's $1,000 in our first toss-up, the category is 'On the Map.'"

That's where the April Fools' Day joke stopped. Sajak took his rightful spot and continued the show without comments on Leto's appearance.

Sajak, 77, announced last year that he will step down after this 41st season as host of "Wheel of Fortune." Ryan Seacrest has been tapped to step in for Sajak next fall.

"Well, the time has come," he said at the time. "It's been a wonderful ride." But that SAD departure is not until June. This was pure April Fools' Day fun.

After his Monday stint, Leto featured a clip of the show on his Instagram Stories, asking "How'd I do?"

Leto already had his dream come true appearing as "the worst contestant ever" (his words) last November with his brother Shannon Leto. In the clip Leto tweeted, the actor/musician told Sajak that he used to watch "Wheel of Fortune" with his grandmother Ruby.

"How's Grandma Ruby doing?" Sajak asked.

"She's gone, Pat," Leto replied. Later in the clip promoting their band's tour, both Shannon and Jared guessed the letter "Z" for the puzzle. The answer was "30 Seconds to Mars World Tour."

Jared Leto Subs in as Wheel of Fortune Host During April Fools' Prank: 'How'd I Do?'

The actor and musician made a surprise appearance on the game show alongside longtime co-host Vanna White

Wheel Of Fortune/Youtube

Jared Leto can add Wheel of Fortune host to his long list of credits!

On Monday, the 52-year-old musician and Oscar-winning actor subbed in as a host on the beloved game show alongside Vanna White as part of an April Fools’ Day prank.

"Here are the stars of our show, Jared Leto and Vanna White," the show’s announcer said as the pair walked out arm-in-arm and waved at the cheering audience.

Leto then told White, 67, "Have a great show and see you soon," before taking his place at the wheel with the show’s three contestants.

"All right everybody, grab those devices, it's time to give away some money," Leto continued as he launched into hosting duties. "A $1000 in our first toss-up, the category is on the map."

The show then switched back to regular longtime host Pat Sajak and continued as normal with no further mention of Leto’s surprise appearance.

The Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman later shared a clip of the moment on his Instagram Story with the caption, “How’d I do? 🤣.”

Leto first appeared on Wheel of Fortune back in November when he and his brother (and bandmate) Shannon Leto were “contestants” on the game show to announce the band’s 2024 world tour.

And though Leto won't be replacing Sajak as Wheel of Fortune host anytime soon, the longtime game show emcee is planning to retire from the show after its current 41st season. He'll be handing over the reins to Ryan Seacrest , who described the opportunity as like being a “kid in a candy store.”

“You don't mess with it, just don't mess with it. Just get out of the way, say ‘Good evening’ and let's play,” the 49-year-old told PEOPLE in September. “I think I have so much adrenaline rushing through my body. Excitement is the word because it's such a phenomenal show. I've been a fan. I grew up watching the show. and I can't wait to take over after the legendary Pat Sajak.”

Sajak is set to say goodbye to the game show in June, while White will stay on as a co-host.

Wheel of Fortune airs weekdays in syndication (check local listings).
