If you have been thinking about going on a Colorado jeep tour, or want to visit the Royal Gorge Bridge for free , then keep reading.

We recently had the chance to book a jeep tour in Cañon City and it was one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had in Colorado.

Our experience taking a Colorado Jeep tour

Now that you know the top Colorado Jeep tours to take, here’s our personal experience with taking a Jeep tour.

We share what you need to know about booking a Colorado jeep tour and what to expect.

Disclaimer: We worked with the ColoradoJeepTours.com team in exchange for a free half-day jeep tour experience. Everything in this guide is our honest experience and showcases our personal opinions.

The company is locally built and owned by Will Colon, who is a fourth generation resident of Canon City.

He started the company with one Jeep and was the first tour guide. He has built everything from the ground up!

These days he has a handful of customized and well-maintained Jeeps, and employs about a dozen people.

The main office is located in the Royal Gorge Region at 2315 East Main Street in Cañon City, Colorado .

Types of Off-road tours in Colorado

Jeep tours are the perfect Colorado day trip experience! And there are many different types of off-road tours in the state.

Here are the most common types of off-road tours in Colorado:

  • 4WD (4×4 truck or car)
  • ATV (all-terrain vehicle)
  • UTV (utility terrain vehicle)

When we did the jeep tour in April, we booked the Royal Gorge Bridge Loop Half Day tour.

Tickets come with complimentary Royal Gorge Bridge access, and it’s the only tour in the state that is allowed to drive across the bridge!

Then just grab your tickets by heading to the Royal Gorge Bridge information desk.

royal gorge bridge half day

Another popular tour package is the Gold Belt Full Day Tour , which tours historic towns like Victor, Cripple Creek, the Garden Park Fossil area, and other spectacular sites.

You can even combine both the Royal Gorge & Red Canyon Half Days into an all day excursion trip.

This full tour takes about 7.5 hours to complete and comes with a mid-day lunch.

Or make a weekend trip out of it and pick a custom Jeep tour package . Packages include combinations of Jeep tours, water rafting, train rides, zip lining, wine tours, and more!

Winter jeep tours are also a thing, if you dare! It may sound cold but the Jeeps are outfitted with roll-down canvas with plastic windows to protect riders from cold, snow, and rain.

And the inside of the Jeeps are nicely heated, while clean blankets are provided so you stay cozy and warm.

Choosing a Jeep tour guide

As mentioned, a Colorado Jeep tour always comes with an expert, local guide for various tours and locations.

All of the guides generally drive the same route for that tour and share similar information. But they do it with their own flair, of course!

And some guides, like our guide Tom, spend additional hours reading and researching the history of the area to offer an even more authentic experience.

Tom also happened to be a retired Colorado Park Ranger, so he had a wealth of knowledge.

off-road tours colorado

He not only talked about the local flora and fauna, but the natural history of the state itself.

He took the time to pull off the trail and allow us to get out and examine old marine fossils embedded in the rocks.

When booking, you will be randomly assigned a tour guide, or you can request to ride with a specific guide if they are available.

What will you see on a Colorado Jeep tour?

Our Jeep tour was roughly 3.5 hours long and started at 8:30am on a Friday. It had just rained the previous night so some of the roads were a little bit wet and slippery.

But Tom, our guide, was a very experienced driver and our jeep was outfitted with 4-wheel drive.

Here is what we saw and experienced on our Colorado Jeep tour.

1. Local wildlife and fauna

colorado jeep tour sites

We drove into the Royal Gorge area, and continued winding in-and-out of the Bureau of Land Management acreage.

These lands are BLM-owned acres within Colorado that are well-maintained but available for free public use.

Every once in a while, Tom would stop the jeep and showcase some native plants or trees, historic fossils, talk about certain mountains, or point out local wildlife.

The rolling hills and mountainous terrain are perfect homes for unique plant life, wildlife like mule deer, mountain lions, and elusive birds.

We actually saw about 50 deer along our drive, and Tom mentioned he has seen a mountain lion or two on his drives.

2. Historical sites

canon city tour trees

The tour started off in Canon City with stops at local historical sites and noteworthy locations.

Throughout the drive Tom had a microphone headset on that broadcast his voice throughout the jeep, so it was easy to hear him.

He shared the history of the area, some interesting tidbits, and an update on a local fire that had burned through about 300 acres recently.

3. Royal Gorge Bridge

There are several star attractions on this Royal Gorge Jeep tour , but one of them has to be the Royal Gorge Bridge.

The highest suspension bridge in the world sits at near 1,000 feet above the canyon floor.

Crossing the bridge to get the other side is not for the faint of heart! Most visitors can cross the bridge on foot, via the Zip Line, or by taking the glass-bottom Gondola.

But if you want to drive across, you will have to be part of this jeep tour experience. Why?

royal gorge bridge tour

Please note that, this Colorado Jeep tour is the ONLY tour company that has access to the bridge and park via this route (aside from maintenance vehicles).

I have been to the Royal Gorge Bridge many times in my life but the changes they have made lately have been improvements.

The wildfire that ravaged the area in June, 2013 destroyed almost all the structures. So, the tourist attraction had to be almost completely rebuilt!

The Visitor Center is brand new and state of the art and offers some awesome views of the bridge and surrounding landscape.

This was also a nice place to get out, take a quick break, get some water, and have access to real bathrooms.

4. Native American & war history

A lot of Colorado’s history is intertwined with Native Americans , so we learned a lot about their past lives.

Native Americans as well as war veterans are buried in the mountains and graveyards near Canon City.

Even as Colorado natives, there was so much we didn’t know and that we learned during this trip.

We also stopped at an overlook point where we could see a large portion of the Sangre De Cristo mountains for miles and miles.

5. Dinosaur fossils

colorado dinosaur fossils skyline drive

There were several checkpoints, including our stop at Skyline Drive, where we viewed real dinosaur fossils and footprints.

At some checkpoints he had to get out of the jeep to open a gate to get private access for Colorado Jeep Tours only.

Throughout the trip, we were able to get out, walk around, take photos, and view the fossils, soil, and other attractions more closely.

Overall, our trip was educational, entertaining, and breathtaking all at the same time!

6. Skyline Drive

skyline drive colorado

One of the last stops on our the Colorado Jeep tour that we booked was to drive up the famous Skyline Drive .

This historic road sits about 9 miles west of Canon City with direct access from Highway 50.

The narrow one-way road follows the top of Razorback Ridge and rises about 800 feet in elevation from the surrounding terrain.

There are no guardrails, fences, or any type of safety railings. It’s just you, the jeep, and the quick drop-offs on either side.

Skyline Drive continues for 2.6 miles with views that overlook the city and valleys on either side.

It’s quite a hair-raising experience but you always feel safe in the Jeep.

Are Colorado Jeep tours safe?

For the most part, yes, the tours are safe and injury-free! But this is an off-road Jeep tour so there are no guarantees.

The tours are obviously done outside so you may experience a bumpy ride, unpredictable weather, off-road terrain, snow, mud, and wind.

And due to uneven and rocky terrain the vehicles may also experience flat tires or minor mechanical issues. But we had no problem at all on our Jeep tour.

You can rest assured knowing that the off-road vehicles are very well-maintained and the guides do a full inspection before driving them out on tour.

The guides also carry two-way radios with them at all times. And they are CPR certified and trained to handle any emergencies.

Do you need to sign a waiver to ride in a Jeep?

booking colorado jeep tours

If you have problems or didn’t enjoy your tour for one of these reasons, just call Jeep tour office where you booked the tour from.

The staff is usually very friendly and will be happy to help out how they can. They truly want this to be the best experience for you and your family!

One layer of protection comes in the waivers that must be signed before the Jeep tour will commence.

Once your booking is confirmed, digital copies of the waivers will be emailed to you for virtual signature.

If they are not signed digitally, you will be requested to sign before jumping into the tour.

What time does a Jeep tour start?

The great thing about Colorado Jeep Tours , specifically, is that they are open all year round, in all weather conditions.

Most jeep tours start daily at 8:30am or 12:30pm and will run between 3 hours to 7.5 hours depending on the tour you choose.

And some of their most popular tours happen in the middle of Colorado’s winter season.

But, of course, spring, summer and fall jeep tours are also in high demand and offer some of the most breathtaking sites and stops!

canon city tour experience

When booking your tour, you will likely have to check in about 30 minutes prior to start time.

Check-ins for morning tours are at 8:00am for an 8:30am start time, while afternoon check-ins are at noon, for a 12:30pm start.

When is the best time to go on a Jeep tour in Colorado?

It is recommended to book a morning jeep tour if possible. This way you won’t get stuck in an afternoon rainstorm, which can happen a lot with Colorado’s unpredictable weather .

The jeeps are custom outfitted using standard Jeep Wranglers with either a manual or automatic transmission.

All the Jeep Wranglers come with 4×4 traction and can seamlessly change to 4-wheel drive as needed.

The back and sides are all open, with a covered ceiling that offers protection and shade from the elements.

During the winter the back and side window panels can be rolled down and zipped for coverage from the cold, wind, or snow.

The standard jeeps have bench seating so they sit about 6 adults comfortably, or more if you have small kids.

Are there bathroom breaks on Jeep tours?

Yes! The jeep tours make scheduled stops at places like the Royal Gorge Bridge where you can get out for 10 minutes to see the sites.

Bathrooms and snack counters are available here for you to take a break and refuel.

However, if you are on a longer full day tour, bathrooms are not always readily available.

You are literally out in the Colorado mountains and wilderness!

If you drink a lot of fluids (which, you should!) you may have to stop and take a nature pee. Especially if you have young kids!

Are dogs allowed on Colorado Jeep tours?

Yes, most dogs are allowed on the jeep tours but there are restrictions pertaining to the size, health, and temperament of the dog.

It’s best to contact the Colorado Jeep Tours office to verify the type of dog you plan on bringing with you.

There may be a fee to bring your dog along and a separate Dog Waiver will need to be signed in advance.

Dogs are NOT allowed with some of the combo tour packages, so make sure you inquire about this before booking.

Some partners, such as the Holy Cross Abbey Winery (for wine tasting), allow dogs on the grounds but not in the buildings.

What to wear on a Colorado Jeep tour

royal-gorge-bridge-crossing-on-foot

A large majority of visitors who book these Canon City tours come from warm states like Florida and California.

They are often unprepared for the fast-changing Colorado weather. But you don’t have to be!

We recommend dressing in lots of layered clothing that’s easy to change out.

As the day warms up, you may want to take a few layers off. Or as the days grow colder you can put on more layers to stay warm.

It just depends on what the weather is currently. Even in the winter, Colorado can have hot sunny days with little cloud coverage.

In the summer it can get very cool in the shade, especially if it gets windy or rainy in the afternoons.

The mountains make the weather unpredictable, so it’s best to come prepared.

What to bring on a Jeep tour in Colorado

Bring lots of water, snacks, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Yep, even in the winter or overcast weather, you can still get sunburned from the sides of the jeep or the direction of the sun.

Wind-breaker jackets or coats with hoods are also recommended to help with any wind or cold air.

You may also want to bring an extra blanket or two (although Colorado Jeep Tours does provide extra blankets in their jeeps).

Do we recommend booking a Colorado Jeep tour?

After having experienced a Colorado Jeep tour for the first time, would we book again?

YES. Without a doubt our experience with Will and his team was amazing and very seamless.

In fact, we DID have to reschedule our jeep tour due to the fact that it was still snowing in March.

But the rebooking didn’t require anything on our part except to confirm the new dates with Will. It was a 3 minute phone conversation and done!

We are already planning another tour in the fall and want to experience the Gold Belt Tour next.

In the summer we are checking out the train and rafting tours as well. There are so many options available and we learned so much on this trip.

The views were unmatched and the local geology was like nothing else we’ve seen.

We can’t recommend Colorado Jeep Tours enough as one of the best weekend activities or day trip adventures.

Why Colorado Springs and why Mountain Jeep LLC?

Colorado Springs is an amazing city with a lot of history, tons of activities, and an outdoor enthusiast's dream.  It is tucked right at the

base of Pikes Peak.  Pikes Peak is the constant backdrop for residents of "the Springs" (Colorado Springs) and becomes part of your life.  Yet,

it is just one of the iconic things to do. Colorado Springs is just minutes away from the mountains and vistas that we are fortunate to be a part of.  Our tours are about giving you

an experience of some of these icons that you'll take with you forever.  Pikes Peak is America's Mountain, so much so it was the inspiration for Katherine Lee Bates' America the Beautiful.  Garden of the Gods

was voted the #2 attraction in the country and #9 in world.  Manitou Springs is such a fun little mountain town you may find yourself

visiting it several times.  Cripple Creek was and is one of largest gold mining towns in the world. Our tours bundle this with deeply

forested excursions with scenery uniquely Colorado.  Mountain Jeep LLC is all about showing you these icons that make the Springs a great place to visit. Our guides love showing our guests

these icons of the Pikes Peak Region, because we love it.

We are honored to take you there.

Google-Reviews

As a mountain guide in the SE and avid adventurer, I wasn’t quite sure to expect with a guided Jeep tour up to Pike’s Peak in November. The experience was incredible. James greeted my wife, 2 teenage boys and I in the early afternoon and welcomed us into a warm and capable vehicle with the requisite experience and tread to calmly navigate the icy shadows and switchbacks of the Pike’s Peak climb from 6500 foot above sea level to the icy alpine vistas above 14000. Along our trip, I was impressed with the knowledge of the constantly varying plantlife, geology and centuries of history shared as we climbed through the passes and returned along the icy meanders of the well regulated mountain roads. We were fortunate enough to have access to the summit this day and even more so to have a guide that provided wise suggestions as to how best enjoy our time with 40% less oxygen for a bit while carousing the warm observation deck at the peak. Our ride down was ready for us after the gift shop and hot cocoa. Additional stops and stories were shared on the descent. An afternoon felt like an adventure shared with family and I’d highly recommend it to any and all who love the mountains!

via TripAdvisor

What an awesome trip! Jonathan shared so many neat facts - and showed us so many sights. It was an amazing day. He showed us where to get great photos, and also took so many for us. We felt very safe - I would not have dared to do that drive and was so much more personalized than cog train. Would definitely recommend and we will return for another tour in the future!

Lisa Buckley

I looked at doing the cog but decided to spend the little bit of extra money to have a more private setting and the guided history/geography and I’m glad I did! I did both the Pikes Peak Jeep tour with Michelle and the Garden of the Gods tour with Johnathon. Both were great! Very informative and both were able to answer all of my questions. Got some great photographs as well. Highly recommend both tours!

Ranger Michelle was absolutely amazing. She was very comforting (in case you have any anxiety about the altitude sickness), extremely informative, and a phenomenal picture taker! We did not make it to the summit because of road conditions - so best time to go is probably in the summer. But honestly this did not impact our experience one bit!

Christina R

Our family loved our Garden of the Gods tour with Mountain Jeep.  Our guides, James and Steven, were very energetic and knowledgeable with the history, facts, and recommendations of the area.  The views from Old Stage Road were amazing, and we felt very safe and secure.  Garden of the Gods had the most gorgeous rock formations.  We enjoyed the recommendations and the stops in Manitou Springs as well.  Very personable and friendly guides that made the experience very enjoyable.

Your tour will see many of the magnificent churches built around our town as well as the Castle of General Palmer.  Time for fellowship, reflection, and fun fills the tour schedule. All trips include the stunning Garden of the Gods.

Bridal veil falls.

Duration: 2 Hours

Bridal veil falls is the tallest waterfall in Colorado at 365 feet! We leave from the town of Telluride and drive up the rugged road to the base of the falls for photo opportunities. We then continue to the top of the falls to explore the old Bridal Veil Powerhouse (built in 1907) and surrounding area before returning to town.

Smuggler Mine

This tour leaves from town of Telluride and goes up the Tomboy Road through the Social Tunnel to the Smuggler Union mine. We will stop at the mine for photos and to explore the rich mining history in the old structures. This was one of the most successful mines in the region and still has some of the most intact structures of mines in the area.

Last Dollar Road

Some consider the Last Dollar Road one of Colorado’s most scenic drives with great views of the Sneffels Range and Wilson Peak. The area is full of massive aspen groves, best seen in September/early October when the Aspens are electric yellow! This road might be arguably one of the best areas to photograph fall foliage. Early summer brings wildflowers galore, while wildlife like deer, elk and even bear can be spotted year round.

Half Day Tour – Depart: 9:00am or 1:00pm

We also offer half day tours to fill part of your day with a fun adventure with Dave’s Mountain Tours.

Tomboy ghost town and imogene pass.

Duration: 4 Hours

This is a rugged route that passes the old Smuggler mine on its way to the ghost town of Tomboy, and then on to Imogene Pass at 13,114 feet. The Tomboy Road was once a well-traveled mining road that connected the town of Telluride and the Town of Ouray. This route generally opens for travel by late June/early July depending on snowpack.

From Telluride we travel south on Hwy. 145 to the Ames powerplant, the birthplace of electricity! From there we stop at several top-secret waterfalls en route through the town of Ophir to the rugged pass road. Ophir Pass climbs above timberline over a scree field to the 11,789 foot summit. This is our go-to route during early season (May and June) as it is always the first route to open for travel.

Black Bear Pass

Duration: 5-6 hours (8am only)

Black Bear Road is an advanced trail that crests at Black Bear Pass, elevation 12,840 feet. The road then descends over a set of infamous switchbacks.

EXCEPTIONAL

Mountain vehicles.

We use Pinzgauers for our tours, they are built in Austria for transportation in the Alps. They have 14” of ground clearance, low gearing, narrow width (important when needing to pass wider vehicles on such narrow roads), and exceptionally tight turning radius.

  • 2 trucks are 4-wheel drive models and have been customized to hold a maximum of 8 plus a driver.
  • Our other truck is a 6-wheel drive model with room for 13 plus driver. With 2 forward facing bench seats plus the 1 “shotgun” seat up front you get 9 forward facing seats.

14 Unbeatable 4×4 Jeep Trails in Colorado

July 5, 2022 By //  by  Shawn Reeser

The Colorado Rockies are an off-road driver’s dream. There are so many trailheads to explore — it’s a perfect mix of top-grade topography, well-kept trails and gorgeous Colorado scenery.

jeep excursions colorado

Of course, before you hit the trail you’ll want to make sure your Jeep is suited to the task, before you get too down and dirty. With a 4-wheel drive Jeep, you hit the real open road and start traversing Colorado’s rugged trails and back roads. They’re challenging, but for the adventurous Jeep drivers, you’ll have an unbelievable experience.

Colorado’s Best Off-Road Jeep Trails

Looking for the perfect thrill-seeking spots? Here are our suggestions for an afternoon of steep climbs, muddy rides, rugged roads and truly stunning panoramas of the mountainside. If you lack a 4×4 vehicle Colorado Jeep rentals can be found throughout the Rockies.

Here are among the top off-road 4×4 roads in Colorado , in no particular order:

1. Wagon Wheel Trail System

Wagon Wheel Trail System Colorado

Spanning a whopping 250 miles, Wagon Wheel’s 13 main interconnecting trails are right in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. If you’re looking for a 4WD roughshod challenge, you can try riding Fawn Creek to Dead Horse Loop, a steep, rocky ride with narrower trails.

For those looking for a laidback afternoon with plenty of panoramic views, Wagon Wheel’s got breathtaking views in spades. You can explore the trails for a quick day trip, or for a whole off-roading weekend. Just make sure you bring your Jeep along.

2. Central City/Saint Mary’s

Yankee Hill Off Road Jeep Trail Colorado

Be honest, you came to the Rockies for the mountain views. And that’s exactly what you’ll get on the Central City/Saint Mary’s trail. A sprawling network of trails, you’ll find plenty of adventure on any avenue you choose.

But if you’re looking for a real mountain climb in your 4WD or Jeep, Yankee Hill is one of those few trails that almost require an off-road vehicle for its best views. It’s a short, steep ascent, and totally worth the occasionally rocky terrain, for views of St. Mary’s Glacier and nearby peaks.

Other trails around Central City/St. Mary’s can take you up and around the glacier for even more spectacular views. The trails are just between Colorado Springs and Denver—easy access for a week-long trip or for city natives.

3. Colorado State Forest

Colorado State Forest Off Road Jeep Trail Colorado

50 miles of off-road trails await Jeep and 4WD enthusiasts, with plenty in the way of Colorado scenery and wildlife. If you’ve ever wanted to spot moose in this gorgeous state, now is your chance—the Colorado Forest is known for its moose-viewing opportunities, as well as its numerous activities outside of its thrilling off-road trails.

The Colorado State Forest is just 3 hours northwest of Denver. It offers thousands of acres to explore.

4. Alpine Loop

Alpine Loop National Scenic Byway 4x4 Colorado

This scenic byway is a classic Colorado trail. Parts of the trail don’t require a 4×4, but if you’re looking to tackle all 63 miles, you’ll almost certainly need a real off-road vehicle to be able to handle the terrain. Rugged trails and rocky climbs are both on offer across the Alpine Loop , located south of Telluride.

And the loop even has a little history, for those looking for a few stops—there are multiple ghost towns and ruins along the trail (and only accessible off-road). There are plenty of passes in the Alpine Loop (and we’ll name-check a few), but the area as a whole is worth a trip.

5. Grand Mesa Trails

Grand Mesa Trails Off Road Jeep Trails Autumn Colorado

Just off of I-70 and about 5 hours from Denver, the ATV and 4-wheel drive trails in the Grand Mesa National Forest span about 150 miles. Grand Mesa’s name is a little misleading—don’t expect a flat, grassy plain—but you’re sure to be met with adventure.

The park’s networked trails feature multiple difficulty levels, with numerous lakes, grassy hills, deep mud holes and rocky climbs. The terrain and the expansive views ensure these trails live up to their rugged reputation. Many of the trails are located on flat-top mountains, making Grand Mesa a somewhat more moderate trail than Colorado’s most challenging scrabbles.

6. Red Feather Lakes

Red Feather Lakes Off-Road Jeep Trail Colorado Sunset

Some miles west of Fort Collins sits Red Feather Lakes in Roosevelt National Park. The park features valleys full of wildflowers and dirt trails perfect for a Jeep or ATV.

The area’s most popular trail is by far Deadman’s Road, a nearly 23-mile stretch of open dusty trail, with a few challenging rocky sections. Be sure to visit in the summer to curtail mud and rocky trails—and to get the most out of trails like Seven Mile Creek Road, which traverses a scenic valley, across a creek and uphill into a forest.

7. Mount Baldy

Southwest of Colorado Springs sits Mount Baldy to many residents due to its uncapped peak. The mountain overlooks one of the state’s largest natural lakes and provides a stunning view of the city.

Although it’s one of Colorado’s more laidback trails, there are still plenty of rocky peaks that, depending on the trail you take, will require some careful driving (and a little traction). There’s another Mount Baldy, aka Mount Craig west of Grand Lake, which does not allow motorized vehicles.

8. Imogene Pass

Imogene Pass Jeep Trail Colorado

A rough-and-tough drive through steep slopes in the San Juan Mountains, Imogene Pass is no easy ride—but it’s a joy ride. Head to the Pass during the mid-summer, and you’ll be rewarded with views of wildflowers and sweeping panoramas at an elevation of roughly 13,000 feet.

9. Hardscrabble Park

Hardscrabble Park Off Road Jeep Trail Colorado

There’s a reason it’s called Hardscrabble Park (and it’s not for the board game). Perfect for 4WD enthusiasts, Hardscrabble might as well be a 4WD and off-roading enthusiast’s playground—just make sure you can keep your grip.

The landscape is a mix of classic West Coast high desert, with plenty of canyons, cliffs and juniper bushes. The trails are a challenging mix of double-track ATV paths and more technical single-track trails, and bonus, they’re perfect for gunning the engine and going, without too much planning on the exact trail you’ll be taking. Put your tires to the trail, and go!

10. Lizard Head Pass

Lizard Head Pass Off Road Jeep Trail Colorado

Snowcapped peaks on Purple Mountains Majesty? Yes, please. Named for the 13,113-foot tall Lizard Head Mountain, the pass is in the San Juan Mountains. Dense forests cover the trails, and you might even see a mountain goat or two, provided you’re not caught up by the peak’s snowy views.

Lizard Head Pass is a popular spot for off-roaders and campers alike, making it a great weekend stop (and hey, a more affordable Swiss Alps experience). Colorado’s avid skiers might be drawn to Lizard Head for an off-road adventure—the pass’s proximity to Telluride makes it an ideal spot for some off-season sports.

11. Ophir Pass

Ophir Pass Off Road Jeep Trail Colorado

Part of the Alpine Loop, Ophir Pass is one of Colorado’s easier roads. It’s a great trail for off-road enthusiasts just starting their new sport, while still providing views of the state’s steeper and more difficult trails.

Located in the San Juan Mountains, the pass provides a reasonable uphill climb to its summit. You’ll still want to exercise caution—the pass has some rocky portions and switchbacks, and up to 20 feet of snow at the summit (even in June!) Trails are well maintained, however, and with two vehicles you and your friends are sure to have a thrilling (and safe) ride.

12. Yankee Boy Basin

Yankee Boy Basin Off Road Jeep Trail Colorado

If you’re looking for scenic views for your photo albums, you’ll find picture-perfect natural scenes at Yankee Boy Basin . It’s an easier trail for those just beginning their off-road adventures, but even for trail veterans, it’s a worthwhile trip for its gorgeous waterfalls and summer wildflowers.

If you’re completely new to off-roading, rent a Jeep, and catch a sunset at the base of Mount Sneffels on this trail—you won’t be disappointed.

13. Kelly Flats

Kelley Flats Off Road Jeep Trail Colorado

Take care as you climb, and you’ll be rewarded with the Chutes, a short but challenging ride through an outcrop of boulders, and plenty of sights between the trail’s most treacherous hills.

As this is by far one of Colorado’s more difficult routes, this is a trail for experienced road warriors and off-road junkies looking for a challenge. Regardless of your experience level, you’ll want to go with more than one off-road vehicle and a few friends.

14. Engineer Pass

Engineer Pass Off-Road Jeep Lake City Colorado

One of Colorado’s more challenging off-road trails, you’ll find Engineer Pass a feat of engineering not only for the grassy canyon view but for its technical 20.5-mile trail. You’ll hit a few difficult switchbacks on this path, but overall you’ll find it well worth the difficult turns (in fact, if you’re looking to test yourself and your vehicle, you might find that to be the trail’s best part).

The pass features several old mines and cabins dating back at least 100 years and a high elevation (with plenty of Rocky Mountain fresh air).

Colombia police arrest 73-year-old American for giving "cannabis tours" in his home

By Cara Tabachnick

April 10, 2024 / 2:46 PM EDT / CBS News

In a new type of "travel high," an American was arrested on Tuesday by Colombian police for allegedly offering $30 "cannabis tours" to tourists in his home.

The 73-year-old man advertised on social media and a website for foreigners to visit his house in Sabaneta, a town south of the city of Medellín  in the northwestern part of the country, Colombian national police said in a statement.

He also distributed flyers advertising "Cannabis Farm Tours" given by "Cannabis Jimmy." The materials said "free samples" would be distributed during the tours. Approximately 2-8 people were on each tour, and reservations were required.

screen-shot-2024-04-10-at-2-29-31-pm.png

The tours lasted 2-3 hours during which the man taught visitors "the process of planting, caring for, harvesting, and maintaining this plant," police said. He also sold tour-takers marijuana for $20 a gram.

screen-shot-2024-04-10-at-2-30-53-pm.png

Police said they confiscated 1,380 grams of marijuana during the arrest. They did not identify the man, only saying he is an American.

Colombia has long struggled to control the trafficking, manufacturing and/or possession of narcotics within its borders.

Late last year, the Colombian Navy intercepted a shipwrecked boat carrying 33 kilograms of cocaine and 744 kilograms of marijuana.

The South American nation is the world's largest exporter of cocaine – almost 90% of the cocaine sold in the United States each year arrives from Colombia.

Jeremy Glover whipped up this cool looking sketch to help promote the Drive for Design contest

 Jeep Designer Pens Futuristic Wrangler

by Michael Gauthier

comments

  • Designer Jeremy Glover has sketched a futuristic Jeep Wrangler.
  • While the sketch was created to promote the Drive for Design contest, it looks rather good.

When it comes to design, one of the toughest tasks is reimagining an icon. The challenges are immense and so are the stakes, especially when it comes to something like the Ford Mustang or Jeep Wrangler.

However, Jeep Exterior Designer Jeremy Glover was up for the challenge and recently penned a futuristic Wrangler . Despite the forward-looking appearance, the model is instantly recognizable thanks to a bold seven slot grille and circular headlights.

They’re joined by pronounced front fenders and an updated take on the classic hood. We can also see a sporty front bumper, five-spoke wheels, and a modernized body that features clean lines as well as rounded accents.

The resulting sketch is impressive as the model embraces a softer, more modern aesthetic. Despite this, the Wrangler wears an aggressive face and sports an outdoor attitude.

Before you start reading too much into things, Glover created the sketch as part of an effort to promote the Drive for Design contest , which is coming to a close. In the clip, you can see him draw a basic outline of the vehicle to get the proportions right. He then adds cut lines, before moving onto the distinctive front end and finishing off with a few extra details.

How do you capture the rugged looks of the @Jeep ® Wrangler on paper? Jeep Exterior Designer, Jeremy Glover, takes us into the Jeep design studio for a tutorial. The deadline for the Drive for Design contest is fast approaching. Head over to https://t.co/9QNaCLcjrv to enter. pic.twitter.com/Hp5FPEkWUp — Stellantis North America (@StellantisNA) April 11, 2024

While the image is simply an interesting sketch, a number of Wrangler owners will undoubtedly take notice. However, it’s worth pointing out the model was recently given a facelift so we shouldn’t expect to see a redesigned Wrangler anytime soon.

Instead, the company is focused on launching the electric Wagoneer S that is due this fall. We can also look forward to a production version of the Recon concept.

Getting back to the Drive for Design contest, less than a day remains for high school students to submit their entries. This year contestants were asked to design their “future dream vehicle for any Stellantis brand in the year 2040.” This could be anything from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram or even the company’s foreign brands.

Masters 2024 highlights: Round 2 leaderboard, how Tiger Woods did and more

The  2024 Masters  continued Friday with the completion of Round 1 followed by Round 2.

What did we learn after all that golf? The weekend should be pretty exciting.

There's a three-way tie for first, with Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau all sitting at 6 under.

If that weren't enough, we get to watch Tiger Woods play the weekend at Augusta National once again. The five-time Masters champ has now made the cut at his 24th consecutive Masters Tournament .

Check out USA TODAY Sports ' updates on all the action from Friday, including Tiger Woods’ status, the leaderboard, highlights and more:

Who is leading the Masters 2024?

It's a three-way tie atop the Masters leaderboard. Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa are all tied at 6 under. Homa had the best outing of the trio Friday, shooting a 1-under 71. Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champ, shot an even par 72 and DeChambeau, the leader after Thursday's first round, shot a 1-over 73.

Check out the full Masters leaderboard here .

Masters tee times for Saturday's third round

Tee times for Saturday's third round can be found here .

What did Tiger Woods shoot Friday?

Tiger Woods shot an even par 72 Friday after recording four birdies and four bogeys.

Did Tiger Woods make the cut?

Yep, Tiger is playing into the weekend once again, setting a record with 24 consecutive made cuts at the Masters.

Woods shot a 1-over 73 Thursday and even par 72 Friday to make the cut.

Tiger Woods grinds through 23 holes at Masters and somehow gets better. How?

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods is 48 going on 68 on good days, probably more like 78 on the others. His body is a mess, especially his right leg that was crushed and rebuilt after his 2021 car crash. The only way he can compete on tour these days is to give himself plenty of time between rounds to recover, ice up, get some rest and try again the next day. To circumvent any part of that process is to tempt fate, likely leading to a poor round, a missed cut and one fewer tournament left to be played in Tiger’s storied career.

So how do we explain  what happened Friday at the Masters,  when Tiger had to play 23 holes in a gusting wind with only a 52-minute break between the first five and the last 18, and actually got better as the day wore on?

Read the rest of Christine Brennan's column from Augusta here .

Masters cut line 2024

The cut line for the 2024 Masters came in at 6 over. Any golfer who shot 7 over or worse is going home.

Who missed cut at Masters?

See who missed the and who will be playing into the weekend here .

Did any LIV Golf players make Masters cut?

Yep. In fact, one of them is in the lead .

Scottie Scheffler tied atop leaderboard after second round

The top of the 2024 Masters leaderboard is crowded with Americans. Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau are all tied at 6-under through two rounds at Augusta National. Both Scheffler and DeChambeau held the solo lead at various times before ending the day in a three-way tie.

Scheffler shot an even par 72 in the second round with three bogeys and three birdies. He had the opportunity to take the sole lead on the 17th but he narrowly missed an uphill putt for birdie to the left.

Scheffler is in great position to win his second Masters Tournament in three years. He took home the green jacket in 2022.

Scottie Scheffler bogeys 13th hole after ball lands in water

Scottie Scheffler almost escaped Amen Corner without incident until he got to the Par-5, 13th hole. The World No. 1 found the water on his second stroke. “No,” Scheffler yelled after the errant shot. He dropped in on the edge of the creek and used a club to chip the ball onto the green. He narrowly missed a par putt and finished with a bogey, his third of the second round. Scheffler drops to 6-under on the tournament and is now tied for first place alongside fellow American Bryson DeChambeau.

Bryson DeChambeau drops out of lead after bogey on 18, Scottie Scheffler in front

American Bryson DeChambeau was even through the second round, all the way until the 18th hole (Par-4, 294 yards). DeChambeau bogeyed on his final hole of the day, marking his fourth bogey, along with three birdies in the second round. He finished 1-over 72 on the day and 6-under on the tournament.

With the bogey, DeChambeau fell from the top of the leaderboard to second place alongside Max Homa. Now, fellow American Scottie Scheffler is in sole possession of first place at 7-under through 12 holes.

Bryson DeChambeau hits bomb tee shot on No. 17

American Bryson DeChambeau made history at the 17th hole (Par-4, 440 yards) at Augusta National. The American co-leader teed off a 372-yard drive down the fairway. He found the green his next stroke on a wedge shot, setting up a birdie putt, which he couldn’t convert. DeChambeau has had several opportunities to birdie that he’s narrowly missed. He remains even on the day and 7-under on the tournament.

Americans Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler share Masters lead

Fore! American Bryson DeChambeau didn’t get off to the best start on the 16th hole (Par-3, 180yards) and launched the ball into a group of bystanders to the left of the green. But he rebounded nicely with a chip shot onto the green and knocked down a putt to save par.

DeChambeau remains even on the day and is 7-under overall, but now he has company. Fellow American Scottie Scheffler picked up a birdie on the 10th hole to take the co-lead with DeChambeau at 7-under.

Masters leaderboard: Bryson DeChambeau on top through 15

American Bryson DeChambeau is at the top of the leaderboard, but he had an opportunity to add to it on the Par-5, 15th hole. His birdie putt looked inline with the hole, until the ball caught the lip and spun out. DeChambeau remains even in the second round with three birdies and three bogeys and is 7-under on the tournament. DeChambeau has company — one stroke above fellow Americans Max Homa and Scottie Scheffle, who are currently tied for second place.

Tiger Woods sets record by making 24th straight Masters cut

On Friday the 15-time major champion  shot an even-par 72 in the second round  of the  2024 Masters  to walk off the golf course at 1 over for the tournament and solidify his weekend tee time.

Woods has now made 24 consecutive cuts at the Masters, the most all-time in the tournament’s illustrious history. The five-time Masters champion, in  his 26th Masters appearance , was previously tied with Fred Couples (1983-2007) and Gary Player (1959-1982).

“I was forced to get up-and-down a few times today, and I was able to do that. A lot of those chip shots I was able to get up and down because I left it in the perfect spot, and that’s understanding how to play this golf course,” Woods explained. “Probably the only exception was the spot I put myself in on 14. Most of the up-and-downs I was in a perfect spot.”

– Adam Woodard, Golfweek

Max Homa finishes second round tied for second

American Max Homa is one stroke away from the lead through two rounds at August National. He’s currently tied for second place at 6-under with Scottie Scheffler, who both trail American Bryson DeChambeau.

Homa made it through 13 holes at 4-under on Thursday, before play was suspended due to darkness. He resumed his first round on Friday and finished at five-under, with seven birdies and two bogeys in the round.

He continued his steady pace during the second round, where he shot two birdies and one bogey to bring him to 6-under for the tournament.

It was a great showing for Homa, who is in pursuit of his first major title. His best major result was 10th place at the 2023 Open Championship, but his highest finish at the Masters was 43rd place last year.
