What we say...

The John Letters Torrance Stand Bag  has an eight-way mesh aero top that makes accessing your clubs easier than ever. It also features 10 pockets, which allow you to have a separate pocket for all of your accessories for maximum organisation. Some of these pockets include a large waterproofs pocket, a valuable pocket, a ball pocket, a drinks cooler pocket, a slip pocket for your scorecard and an external transparent ball holder.

You can also carry the Torrance stand bag with ease due to the ventilated dual strap system. This dual strap allows the weight of the bag to be spread across your back and shoulders for a comfortable carry as you walk the fairways.

The stand itself has been designed to open-out as you set your bag down and the larger feet on the legs allow for better balance on most lies on the golf course.

Other features including the towel ring, external glove holder, umbrella loop and a golf ball personalisation tool is attached to the side of the bag to make marking your ball even easier.

As well as the integrated top handle there is a grab handle in the centre of the bag and loop on the bottom to make carrying and transporting the bag even easier.

New golf travel bags from Titleist

There’s one thing no keen golf traveler can do without and that’s a high quality golf travel bag.

If you’ve invested thousands of pounds in your prized irons, driver, wedges, putter and bag – the last thing you want is for them to be thrown into the hold of an aeroplane by a grumpy baggage handler who can’t wait for his shift to finish.

Worse than that, when your unprotected golf bag finally arrives on the conveyor belt at baggage reclaim you find your £200 Scotty Cameron putter is missing and your new hi-tech driver shaft is in three pieces.

Golf Travel Bag is a no-brainer – Get One!

If you are flying off on a golf holiday there’s simply no option, you need to invest in a durable, robust and easy to transport golf travel bag.

There are lots of different types of golf travel bags on the market, ranging from budget options like Dunlop , Masters Golf and John Letters to the high-end travel bags like Club Glove used by the world’s jet-setting tour professionals.

Hard Case vs Soft Case Golf Travel Bags

If you are extremely security conscious and terrified of your clubs being damaged you can opt for a hard case golf travel bag with a rigid frame. These golf travel bags can take the bumps and scrapes but they aren’t so great when it comes to fitting them in the trunk of your hire car.

The other option is the soft case golf travel bag. The outer fabric of the bag is soft and flexible but reinforced by internal padding, especially at the top, where the heads of your clubs will be sticking out from your golf bag.

golf travel bags

The benefit here is that they are lighter, easier to handle and stow more easily in any transport you will be using to get to the resort or hotel. They are cheaper too.

Whichever one you opt for, make sure you buy a golf travel bag with wheels on, so that you can roll it through the airport rather than have to carry it on your shoulder.

What’s the point in going on a golf holiday if your back goes into spasm just as you arrive at the resort.

As a general rule, buying a golf travel bag is a little like buying your best leather shoes, a winter coat or a new suit – meaning you often get what you pay for – and if you buy cheap they don’t tend to last.

You may have a golf travel bag but if it’s got holes in it then any light fingered member of airport ground staff could soon find their way in among your Pro V1’s.

Here are two great options at two different price points from Titleist.

Titleist Club Glove Travel Cover – SRP: £251

The Big Review – John Letters T9+ Driver and Fairway Woods

john letters travel golf bag

In fact, in Sam Torrance and Bernard Gallacher John Letters have two players who went on to captain Ryder Cup teams and John Letters' clubs are found in the bags of more than a few players on the European Seniors Tour. Their recent announcement at the PGA show that they are opening a workshop in St Andrews in Scotland showed that they are on the way back into the limelight. Bag Chatter got to try out the T9+ driver and fairway woods over the winter period to see how they performed.

So what are we told about these clubs; The T9+ Beta Titanium driver features a head made from strong but lightweight titanium to allow for a redistribution weight across the clubhead and towards the heel and toe areas to provide more stability and extra forgiveness on every drive.

The fairway wood uses discretional weighting to push more weight in the heel and toe areas for maximum forgiveness and stability on off centre strikes. A special Maraging steel face transfers more energy at impact whilst 'Feel Cell' technology in the sole of the clubhead helps to disperse vibrations at impact, giving an improved sound and solid feel.

The T9+ clubs are good looking in a fairly understated way. The glossy pure black finish and the chrome and blue sole is not as lurid as some (and it's certainly not all white!).

john letters travel golf bag

The driver is not quite as appealing as the fairway woods. With it's broad face it's functional rather than pretty and the closed face will mean that slicers will love it but it will look wrong to those that fear the left side of the course.

With their shallow profile and square face the fairway woods are another matter. They set up beautifully at address and ooze class.

Performance

The driver is a good honest club without excelling in any one area. Forgiveness is probably the category where it scores the strongest where the heel and toe weighting means that strikes away from the sweetspot still travel almost as far. Distance as a whole is good, coming from a high trajectory launch and the spin levels are pretty much middle of the range. You can tell from the straight flight that this driver is aimed squarely at the sort of golfer who struggles to hit the ball straight and who is not interested in working the ball. With the face being so strongly closed, there is a definite tendency for the ball to go left and given that the sort of golfer that this club is aimed at more often struggles with a slice than a hook, this makes perfect sense.

john letters travel golf bag

The fairway woods are top notch. The shallow face means that it works as well from the fairway as from the tee. You can even use them in light rough where the sole allows you to glide through the grass. In fact, the low profile head is reminiscent of the iconic Adams Tight Lies fairways both in appearance and in performance. With the low COG, it's very easy to get the ball up in the air but there is no ballooning. These really performed beautifully throughout a rather grotty winter period in less than ideal conditions. Even when the fairways were soft and heavy, it was easy to clip the ball off the turf and send it arcing towards the green. With the high launch and mid spin, these are very good for approaching the green on par 5's and longer par 4's.

john letters travel golf bag

The review clubs came with Project X graphite and Aldila RIP shafts which did a great job at controlling spin levels as well as offering a superb sense of location throughout the swing.

While the driver does not have the changeable hosel technology that golfers have come to expect in the big dog, the solid performance at only £149 means that for the budget conscious golfer it deserves some consideration.

The fairway woods are excellent whichever way you look at them. Fantastic performance and good looks make them a real surprise package that should be considered whatever your price bracket but for under £70, they are probably the best option in their price bracket.

Once you mentioned that the driver appears closed at address I knew that I couldn’t get it. I was interested in the 15 degree loft available in this club.

John Letters clubs on test

Tramline Putter, Tx lob wedge, Tu Utility wood

john letters travel golf bag

I have always had a soft spot for John Letters. Launched in 1918 it’s one of the world’s oldest golf club makers, it was at its height around 1948, the year of my birth, and I still have my first putter, a battered Golden Goose which was a magic wand no self-respecting pro would leave out of his bag.

The game has much to thank the Scottish-based company for. It might not have the promotional and marketing clout of the 21st century’s corporate giants but in its day produced clubs that the top players would pay to play – not be paid to play.

You’re unlikely to see many John Letters clubs on the rich pro circuits of the world, but for the club golfer they are producing good quality equipment as I discovered with the chance to test three of its latest products.

Trilogy Tramline Mid-Length putter

Price: £105

Every time you switch on the telly almost every three-ball competing on the European or US Tour will inevitably include a player using a broomhandle or belly putter.

It’s a rare sight among average amateur club players – indeed I don’t know one among our club’s 1,000 members – but once handicap golfers realise that consistent yet unorthodox putting and putters, can lower their scores, it could catch on!

Ping, Odyssey, Scotty Cameron, STX are all producing their own extended flat sticks while John Letters has adapted its popular Trilogy Tramline into a 41-inch double-gripped club that handles more like a pedlar’s pike staff than a putter.

I couldn’t get to grips with it – literally.

I tried tucking it into my tummy but wasn’t tall enough, I tried standing more upright but found it tough to anchor to my sternum (breast bone).

I tried reverse overlap, left-below right, ‘the claw’ but couldn’t get comfortable enough to produce the rhythmical pendulum swing with the putter head that Bernhard Langer, Sam Torrance and Colin Montgomerie make look so natural.

While the angular, trough design of the head with the weight re-positioned behind the shaft, makes the clubhead heavier it makes it tougher to control.

I put it in the hands of better players than me and all agreed that especially on longer putts, control of the Tramline literally came off the rails.

We were convinced that a golfer who’s around 6ft tall, carry a little extra weight and with wrists of steel could make the most of this type of club – step forward Monty and Uncle Sam!

It tended to work well at medium range 5ft – 15ft on quick greens, where the average handicap golfer was not expected to hole everything. But from longer range and especially with those little 3ft knee-tremblers the club did not instill confidence.

A saving feature was the milled head which certainly produced grip on the ball and encouraged a good roll, and the attractive blue and white headcover which zipped on like a boot around the clubhead.

The Trilogy Tramline Mid-Length putter is an acquired taste that demands much practice to make the best of it together with certain natural physical attributes not all of us possess.

Trilogy Tx Extra Spin lob wedge

Price: £59.99

I’ve discovered from playing the game for nearly 30 years that using a 60 degree lob wedge effectively, is as much based on confidence as practice.

If the rest of your game is, let’s say, ‘off’, don’t expect to play career escapes with this shallow-faced wand.

It was unfortunate that I was having a nightmare with my driving and my putting was inconsistent, to say the least when I chose to put this handsome-looking wedge in my bag for the first time.

Immediately it failed to play a tricky parachute shot over a hazard – it got the blame for everything and did well to escape in one piece.

Further testing, however, on different days showed its true colours with a succession of high pitches from dodgy lies, together with biting chips from the fringes of greens where it was easy to re-adjust the loft by pushing hands forward in the stroke.

The Trilogy Tx Extra Spin is one of the best-looking wedges I’ve seen with its distinctive black head and white alignment guide on the face. Apparently the head is initially polished then immersed twice in nitrate (saltpeter) acid for a few seconds to blacken the steel.

It results in a much more attractive finished article than the clubs that are designed to rust naturally.

A good-looking club that performs best from tight lies on the fairway with a full shot from 50-60 yards or around the green when you need bite. Feels heavier in the head than most lob wedges I’ve tried.

Trilogy Tu Utility wood

Price: £69.99 (£79.99 graphite)

The first thing you notice about this club is its grip. You literally can’t keep your hands off it.

Developed uniquely for John Letters clubs, you wrap your fingers around it, caress its soft spongy texture and believe instantly that the head on the end of the graphite shaft will deliver your ball right to the spot intended.

It doesn’t always happen but even after a poorish result it’s hard to let go and blame it on the club. This grip has got feelings as well as feel.

I tried out the 19 degree loft version with an Aldila low torque graphite shaft (there are 17,22 and 25 degree models) and the ball flight tended to be medium to low but penetrating even out of fluffy lies in the rough where you expected the odd ‘flier’.

Try as I might I couldn’t get the trajectory for that softer landing the manufacturers claim.

During the last five years I have measured all utility clubs – including the smaller profile heads like the Tu – against the Callaway Big Bertha 3-wood I have tended to carry but none has matched it. The Tu is no exception but it’s one of the best clubs I’ve fondled!

Feels better than it plays. The small head, low profile is not to everyone’s taste but good value.
