Sky: Children of the Light soars onto PlayStation platforms on Dec. 6th, brings along a Journey Pack

Offering gorgeous, stylish visuals and online crossplay with console and mobile platforms, one of the first events to take part in will be a virtual concert by musician AURORA on December 8th which will apparently connect 4,000 live players together.  And for those who miss Journey as much as we do, they will be offering up a PlayStation exclusive Journey Pack for $24.99 that includes a bundle of Journey-inspired items such as a cape, hood and mask.

A look back at where it all began

Developer thatgamecompany has released a breathtaking new trailer for Sky: Children of the Light. This trailer was made in collaboration with animator and YouTuber “SAD-ist”, and it gives fans (new and old) a glimpse into the powerful story within Sky: Children of the Light.

Celebrated indie studio thatgamecompany’s most recent title, Sky: Children of the Light , has debuted in early access on Steam. To mark the occasion of its chill, free-to-play MMO coming to PC, it’s knocking 85% off the cost of its masterpiece, Journey . It’s normally $14.99, but this Steam Deck verified game costs just $2.24 through April 17.

Despite launching first on the PS3 back in 2012, Journey is absolutely worth playing if you haven’t tried it out, or just want to experience it again. Like all of the games that have come out of thatgamecompany, it’s absolutely stunning to look at, and its story and music pack an emotional punch.

Its multiplayer component is understated, yet surprisingly impactful, allowing players to support each other without voice chat (much like in its successor Sky: Children of the Light ) as they attempt to overcome environmental obstacles and scale a mountain. Words simply don’t do the experience justice, and at $2.25, I highly recommend trying it out. If you like the vibes, then check out Sky: Children of the Light .

Journey studio's Sky: Children of the Light finally arrives on PC

Ahead of next week's Season of Nesting.

Sky: Children of the Light, the acclaimed free-to-play "social adventure" from Journey and Flower developer ThatGameCompany, has - just shy of a year since being announced for PC - finally launched on Steam , initially as an early access release.

Sky: Children of the Light is far from a new game, of course; it originally launched for iOS all the way back in 2019 before making its way to Android, Switch, and PlayStation in the years since. And now - with over 260m downloads to its name already - PC players will have the opportunity to experience its lovely, if unusual, adventure for themselves.

Spanning the seven realms of a beautiful kingdom located among the clouds, Sky: Children of the Light combines puzzley-platformy bits and story vignettes, all build around a gently collaborative multiplayer core designed to encourage "compassion, friendship, and altruism".

It arrives on PC with support for cross-play and cross-progression between all available platforms, and with the same live-service-style Seasonal and event content as other versions. However, ThatGameCompany has also opted to launch on Steam as an early access release to secure feedback and "ensure that the full suite of Steam PC features can be implemented".

The studio's full PC development goals are as follows:

• Enhance stability and the playing experience on PC and Steam Deck
• Integrate Steam friends, achievements, and Remote Play support
• Continue to enhance game graphics with HDR and VRR support
• UI changes that make it easier to find the emote you want in the expression menu
• Improve the onboarding process to welcome new players more effectively
• Further develop Aviary Village as a social hub for events and activities
• Introduce a new quest system to enrich interactions with the Spirits
• Celebrate with in-game events and offer items that allow players to connect and express their creativity

ThatGameCompany says it'll keep Sky: Children of the Light in early access "until player feedback and refinements can be fully implemented", but the Steam version will retain full content parity with other versions while the process continues. That includes Sky's upcoming Season of Nesting, which launches on 15th April and is fully detailed over on its website .

Free-to-play now on Steam Early Access

It's been lovely to see Thatgamecompany bring the likes of Journey and Flower to PC, following their debuts on other platforms long before, and oh look here comes their latest too. Sky: Children Of The Light is now available free-to-play in early access on Steam, inviting everyone to explore a pretty world full of pretty sights and sounds in this "peaceful" MMO. Having installed it and started playing it myself, the important part is: yes, you can slide down hills in this one too.

There you are, a being fallen from the sky to restore a darkened kingdom on a series of adventures to jump, fly, swim, solve puzzles, and generally be pleasant. Like Journey, it's more into vibes than challenge. And it's an MMO, so you can join up with folks and get into social activities.

Sky debuted on iThings in 2019, later spreading to Android, Switch, then PlayStation 4. And now, PC. It first arrived on PC last year with a Steam Next Fest "demo" that was basically the full game with microtransactions disabled. Thatgamecompany then decided to keep the demo up and running until shortly before this official microtransaction-enabled early access launch. Part of the reason the PC version took a while, creative director Jenova Chen told us , was beefing up security against hackers who use bots to farm and sell currencies, and even jack into the game with bootleg builds charging money to unlock everything. He told Katharine that hackers are "making millions of dollars", which I must say surprised me.

Sky: Children Of The Light is available now on Steam Early Access for Windows. It's free-to-play, funded by selling cosmetics (£25 for a Journey costume?!) and a season pass which offers extra cosmetics.

The next season will start on Monday the 15th, introducing the ability to create your own little Nest/home .

I've heard that playing Sky in the long-term turns into grinding busywork to earn currencies to buy cosmetics, which I have no interest in, but ah sure I've installed it so I can have a single playthrough of the campaign. I'm okay with just stopping when I'm done. Thoughts on the game, veteran Lightchildren?
