Anarchic noise-blues act, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, hail from New York, US, gaining a wild reputation through their ferocious live shows that made them one of the most exciting bands of the ‘90s.

Arising out of the ashes of the garage rock act Pussy Galore, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion took shape in the early 1990s, initially creating early demos awash with chaotic noise. Their unpredictable, improvisatory feel outshone the poorly mixed recordings, alluding to the band’s future potential. With their 1992 self-titled effort and their following “Crypt Style” release, the band had began to tighten their recordings and songwriting, offering up solid slabs of blues-tinged garage punk.

The band’s breakthrough was found in 1993, with “Extra Width,” which gained them exposure on MTV’s alt-rock show, “120 Minutes,” with their single and accompanying video “Afro” gaining rotation on the show. The band had tightened up, offering some seriously catchy and funky grooves that were still sounding chaotic to the ear, as if Elvis Presley had taken a shed load of speed and fallen into company with a bunch of anarcho-punks. Yet it was with their live show that the act really stood out, offering a frenetic show that captivated many an audience.

Their next releases displayed a more streamlined sound, with 1994’s “Orange,” 1996’s “Now I Got Worry” and 1998’s “Acme” finding them an ever-growing legion of fans. Despite growing success, the band took a four year hiatus, not returning until 2002 with “Plastic Fang.” A move from Matador Records to Sanctuary ushered in a new polished sound with 2004’s “Damage.” Three years later, they released the “Jukebox Series,” on new label In The Red Records before again announcing a hiatus.

In 2010 they returned to the fore, playing a number of shows in support of their catalog been reissued. New material was soon on the way, with the release of 2012’s “Meat + Bone,” leading the way for “Freedom Tower: No Wave Dance Party 2015,” a homage to their hometown of New York City, released in 2015, featuring the production talent of Alap Momin.

Live reviews

There’s something faintly ridiculous about watching a man in leather trousers, drenched in sweat, putting on a stagey blues voice, basically pretending to be Elvis and repeatedly shouting the name of his band…yet somehow Jon Spencer gets away with it and even makes it seem quite cool. Weird, huh? The above is basically what happens at a Jon Spencer Blues Explosion show; you’ll be asked to testify, shout “Blues Explosion, ow!” numerous times while the crazy, sweaty man guides his band through a bunch of tracks which mix garage rock, glam and punk to incredible effect. Spencer and his band (Judah Bauer and Russell Simins) have been converting gig-goers through the power of rock and roll since 1991 and their many albums have seen few stylistic changes. And that’s because no changes are needed; ‘Dang’ from the brilliant Orange remains a stunning primal blast of blues, ‘Wail’ (taken from Now I Got Worry) remains as dirty and sleazy as ever while the newer tracks like ‘Help These Blues’ sound brutally loud and unrefined, and don’t miss any of the studio trickery and guest spots which peppered the Damage album of 2004. In the end, you are completely taken in by Spencer’s shape-throwing preacher antics and the only thing you can do is testify. All together now: “Blues Explosion, ow!”

jsbx was awesome. loud, fast, dirty, sexy and in your face. Jon,Judah and Russell played some great rock and roll. the New Songs were good. I especially enjoyed the older stuff off the first albums and Blues Explosion man was how they closed it out with use of the theremin and effects. I am a fan for life. the first time I saw them was at jabber jaw opening for the Jesus Lizard. I've got all their records. Orange, Extra Width, and the remix EP are my favorites. also openers, We are Hex, were very good too. I got t shirts, Records, signatures and handshakes and went home deaf tired and horny. what more can you ask for

Mercy Lounge is a great spot to see a band in Nashville

The front door people were quite helpful and the bartenders poured nice double Jack n Cokes. The space can hold up to 500 people only around 125 showed up. Looked like a loyal crowd. Problem was the volume was way to loud. Not enough people to soak up the sound. I have waited since their 1998 Acme CD to see them live. All told not a spot on night.

The Blues Explosion put on a brilliant show. Punky bluesy rock and roll you can dance to. Mr Jon Spencer is a great performer, singing with gusto and getting the crowd involved. Judah Bauer rocks the guitar and Russell Simms beats the crap out of the drum kit in the funkiest way possible. Non-stop energetic good times. If they play near you, don't miss them.

The Legendary Tigerman was brilliant. What an artist!!!

JSBX was good, but nothing more. I know them since more than 20 years, but in one hour I haven't recognized any song of them. It sounds all similar and like a mixtape! Perhaps it was even the lousy sound from their amps. Pity!

Jon Spencer of the Blues Explosion: My Life in 10 Songs

By Christopher R. Weingarten

Christopher R. Weingarten

For 30 years, rock & roll powder keg Jon Spencer has been a flailing, wailing presence in the American underground: from the transgressive noise clang of Pussy Galore to the high-octane avant-blues of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, from Boss Hog's major label dirt-groove to Heavy Trash's rockabilly rumble. Once again — alongside drummer Russell Simins and guitarist Judah Bauer — his most acclaimed band, the JSBX, is returning with their 10th album, the Gotham-ist  Freedom Tower: No Wave Dance Party 2015 (which you can still hear in its entirety  before its March 24th release date). We caught up with Spencer to ask about some of his most well-regarded recordings.

Pussy Galore, “HC Rebellion” (1985)

Jon Spencer

Pussy Galore was a band I started with my friend Julie Cafritz. We left, dropped out of Brown. I guess we're still technically on leave? We weren't really playing hardcore, but we were definitely influenced by the scene. Hardcore was my real university. How I learned about putting on a show, putting out a record, booking your own show.

We did the first two records at Barrett Jones' home studio, the Laundry Room, in the living room of a suburban house in Virginia. That first Pussy Galore EP, Feel Good About Your Body , we'd never been in a studio before, didn't know anything about it. We jumped into the deep end and we tried to swim.

That song, Julie's reading from letters section of Maximumrockandroll . Most letters in Maximumrockandroll , they were just these people complaining so bitterly about "the scene." How things weren't being done correctly or what wasn't right about it: It's kind of ludicrous because this is basically an offshoot of punk-rock which was, to me, this free, anarchic thing. . .I think Pussy Galore was definitely trying to knock things down a peg. How did it become so self-important? But also, Pussy Galore was also anti- kind of everything. We were very, very angry and also sort of confused people. I think we were also kicking against the local scene, the Dischord scene. We make a half-hearted jab against them on the artwork on the single. We didn't know those people, it was sort of a bratty move. But that was all part of what we were doing. I now have a great respect for the Dischord label.

Pussy Galore, “Cunt Tease” (1986)

Jon Spencer

We were genuinely angry people and wanted to throw that anger to other people. But I think also we had a sense of humor. With "Cunt Tease" it's, in some ways, a totally ridiculous song. It's turning inside-out the stereotypical bravado of Sixties rock & roll, and all of rock & roll.

It was me using a cool riff from a band I had played in before. I was in another band when I was at Brown — and that band, for a little while, was called Pussy Galore. It was a straight up garage band. I don't know what words were to that song before, but it was basically the same song, the heart of that riff — thats why it was credited to me and [Buster Ludd]. Julie's part, I think [she] improvised it in the studio. I think she's just over there screaming in the background when I'm doing my vocal take

By that time we had Neil Hagerty who was a amazing guitar player. I think we didn't own a tuner when we moved to New York City. We just kinda tuned to each other.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, “Afro” (1993)

Jon Spencer

Extra Width we recorded down in Memphis. We were obsessed not just with Stax but also Sun, so we made the pilgrimage and we tracked down at Easley Studios. I'd worked at Sun before, I did a Gibson Brothers record there. That was kind of a bummer, that whole session. You're basically paying for the room. It's not like they have any of the old cool mics or board or tape machines there. So I wasn't really interested in going and working at one of the famous old places.

I think "Afro" came out of [a] discussion of Stax. And also from listening to Otis [Redding] and Rufus [Thomas]. A lot of people have talked to me about the guitar solo on that record. My engineer, Jay Braun, says that's his reference for what a good volume should be for a guitar solo. It's not even a guitar, it's an old Juno synthesizer.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, “Bellbottoms” (1994)

Jon Spencer

Things changed a little bit [after 1994's  Orange ], but we were just always nose-to-the-grindstone. We were working, and working very hard, making the records we wanted to make and touring. I'd like to think that if we got over, it was just through hard work and sweat and playing and turning people on. Yeah, things changed, but it's not like I was given keys to the city or the record label bought us Cadillacs or that I got a dinner invitation from Eric Clapton or something.

"Bellbottoms" was originally twice as long, there was this whole end section that was cut out of the record. The string section was just something I had heard and wanted to do. A buddy of mine knew a cellist and a violinist, so I hummed this part to my buddy, he made some sheet music and then we got the two string players in and had them play it twice so it sounded a little bit bigger.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, “Flavor Pt. 1 & 2” (Beck, Mario Caldato Jr. and Mike D Remix) (1995)

Jon Spencer

The remix record was sort of a natural extension of the influence and love of rap and hip-hop. The Beastie Boys were very nice and took us out as a support act for a few weeks. It was the Roots, the Blues Explosion and the Beasties Boys. The Roots had just released their first record, and they had only like a 20-minute slot or something.

I think with all those remixes, we sent the tapes out to people and just tried to encourage everybody to just do whatever they wanted to do. Fuck it up however they wanted to do it. Some of the things I got back I had to do a little extra work to edit. Maybe I overstepped a line there, but it was my record, so fuck 'em!

When we were working on Orange , Blues Explosion was kind of popular, and we had been courted by a bunch of different labels, and I just wasn't interested at all. I wanted to remain independent. It wasn't like, "Hey yeah, buy us this lobster or fly us out here" because most of the time I was just like, "No thanks." But Boss Hog, Cristina [Martinez, bandmate and wife], she was game. So Boss Hog signed to Geffen, to DGC. When Cristina and I went out to do that deal in Los Angeles, "Loser" may have been a hit and Beck, in all his interviews, or some of them, would talk about how much he loved Pussy Galore. I got his number from somebody from Geffen. I hit him up, he said, yeah sure, I'll call you back in about 30 minutes.

[For the original version], we got a Radio Shack suction-cup microphone, put it up to the phone and called him back and said, "OK, we're just gonna play the song really loud in the control room." Beck freestyled and I think that's his first take. You can hear me at the end of it saying, "Yeah that was great."

Boss Hog, “I Dig You” (1995)

Jon Spencer

We asked for a certain type of agreement. Of course, it was still a major-label agreement, but we were able to do what we wanted to do. They left us alone in the studio. I mean you can listen to that record, it's pretty funky. Funky in sort of a homemade way, it's not super polished or pro. We were careful, we read the contract, we knew what was going on.

When we were being wooed by Geffen, Cristina and I actually went in and had a meeting with David Geffen. I remember asking him something like, "So what do you think about a particular Sonic Youth song?" And David Geffen was very honest. I think he said something like, "You know, I couldn't tell you about that song, but I trust that these other. . ." He seemed like a straight-shooter.

It wasn't bad working with Geffen. It was not a bad experience, and I'm generally not a big fan of the music industry. We're talking two, three years post-Nirvana. That was like the gold rush. And as much as I resented all that, because that was the death of it all, and I'm a person that came out of the American underground and Nirvana and that success fucked everything up and ruined it. . .I think there were people that got in and got out unscathed. Melvins were one, Boss Hog was one, we're around today making a new record.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, “2 Kinda Love” (1996)

Jon Spencer

One of the Australian stations had a program called Rage that would go all night, and they would show videos. And then they had a program called Recovery that was on Saturday morning or Sunday morning, I guess. It was more like a talk show, and they would have segments about this and that and they would have bands. So we do the song — and this was not rehearsed — I think something clicked in my head like "fuck it" and I went off. And Judah and Russell just stayed with me. And God bless the Australian Broadcasting Company. It wasn't like anybody came in screaming, "Shut this down," or got yelled at afterward.

What's funny is like two years ago, we had a video for the song "Bag of Bones," directed by a young woman named Lucy Dyson. She's Australian, and she was actually working on the program at the time and was going to do some cooking demonstration. When I was talking to her about making this video, she said, "You know we've sort of met before. . .I was there when you did Recovery and if you watch the clip, at one point you run into me. I'm over by the stove on the kitchen set."

I never really felt like I was the "theremin guy." The only time I ever really felt good about it when there was a film, Theremin , which is a great documentary. And i went to see it at the Cinema Village. . .and went to buy the tickets, and in the lobby they had a big poster for Orange which has a line drawing of the Moog Vanguard that I used to play. That was the one time I felt like, "oh cool!" I think the theremin is a beautiful instrument but maybe sometimes I feel a little sheepish because I'm playing it in a very wrong way. I don't think Leon Theremin would approve.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, “Talk About the Blues” (1998)

Jon Spencer

I guess it was related to Rolling Stone . It was spurned on from an interview I did with Joe Levy, who was some guy I knew because we used to work together at Details . Rolling Stone was doing a blues issue, so I did an interview with him for the blues issue. And the interview went fine, but beforehand I got really nervous and worked myself up and that song was written from that anxiety or tension.

At that time we were also starting to get dogged by questions of authenticity and our right to do whatever we were doing. And I think it probably would not have happened if the band had been named anything else. People got tripped up. So that song is commenting on or about all that sort of stuff.

We did that one with [Dan the] Automator. And that's using some stuff we recorded with Calvin Johnson. Calvin wanted to do a trade. He said, I'll do a remix if you guys do a session for me. So the next time we were touring the Northwest we left two days or something, three days free, stayed in Olympia and recorded with Calvin. This was when Dub Narcotic was in his house. We just spent two or three days banging around and out of that came the Sideways Soul record on K. But then he graciously allowed us to take some of those recordings. So, "Talk About the Blues" is a sampled from a riff recorded at the old Dub Narcotic studio I basically just played the sampler and just improvised the lyrics. I did a demo on my own like that and then Dan the Automator took it. He basically just took it and beefed it up and made it powerful.

I love the video for that. Now everybody and their fucking mother does the funny video and does the celebrity cameo video. I'm fuckin sick to death of [it]. But if you look at that, that's us back it what was that '98? What a great fake band! Winona Ryder, John C. Reilly and Giovanni Ribisi.

Blues Explosion, “Hot Gossip” feat. Chuck D (2004)

Jon Spencer

Working with Chuck D. Who would have thought? What a sweet guy, what a nice guy. At that time Russell Simins had a studio on West 28th St., I think it was. It was in the Flower District, which is no longer even the Flower District. But he had a studio, it was on the 15th floor or something and from one of the windows you could see the Empire State Building. Damage [from 2004] was written there and there's a lost album between [2002's] Plastic Fang and Damage . And we're gonna try to put this out. We always call it "the black album." A tribute to Prince's Black Album . We wrote tons and tons of stuff and it was a proper studio, so it was all being recorded

You know, it's one of the few overtly political songs [in the JSBX catalog]. This was after 9/11, we are a New York band we are residents of New York City. That song was coming out of a great frustration and horror, not so much with the events of September 11th, but with seeing how the rest of the country. . . You know this was something that happened to us , in a way. That morning I was taking my son to school. I'm on the M14 bus going crosstown and looking down 6th Ave, you could see fire. The first plane had just hit so it was something that was very, very personal to all of us in the band. And then to see how things went down following that and the ways in which the government and this country used something. . .Maybe this is entirely naïve or I'm oversimplifying it, but I was in the middle of this thing. We all lived through this you know, and it felt so bad to see all this wrong done afterwards, in our name.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, “Do the Get Down” (2015)

Jon Spencer

I had had the title Dance Party in my head for months, and then one morning it kind of hit me: I don't even think they use the term "Freedom Tower" anymore. They kind of backed away from it. But that seemed to be a very apt title for this record and what it's about. . . I mean, who would have thought there'd be a hole in the ground for how many years was it? That it took that long, it's just shameful. So, the new record turned out to be very New York-centric. A theme emerged and it was something that kind of happened, organically. When I sequenced the album I purposefully went for the songs which worked together on this theme. I lived in New York City for 29 years or something, I've lived here most of my life — and I still don't really feel like "a New Yorker," but at this point, fuck it. I'm gonna claim something.

Interview / Show Preview: https://www.lapresse.ca/arts/musique/2024-02-08/jon-spencer/le-rock-n-roll-est-une-etrange-forme-d-art.php

Jon Spencer discusses the new line-up and current tour:

“PAN M 360: You’ve had several incarnations since Pussy Galore, tell us a bit about this new one. Jon Spencer: The two musicians I’m currently playing with, Spider Bowman and Kendall Wind, are both excellent players. We had a really nice tour in November and December, so I’m very confident. I think we’ll be able to pull it off and play some good shows. We’ve just spent the past five days mainly working on new material, which I hope to be playing in our upcoming shows over the next week. And when we’re done with this tour, we have plans to go into the recording studio.” “But I think songs really mature and really come together when you’re playing them out at a club. So I’m looking forward to this week’s set of shows as a way to really figure out these songs. But I would like to think that this new material is using the strengths of this new band, you know, specifically the strengths of my bandmates Kendall and Macky, and that the new material we’re working on is designed for this trio.”

JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION – JAN ’11

“Energy means sweat and sweat means action and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (The Blues Explosion!!! or JSBX to you) wants everyone to take that, rub it all over and spread the word.”

jsbx tour

Anybody who witnessed  The Jon Spencer Blues Explosio n on their first visit to Australia and New Zealand in the early nineties as support to US hipster Beck, would have seen a man – a band – seemingly possessed with the spirit of everything great rock ‘n’ roll has to offer. A flat out garage attack of diamond riffs, snarled vocals, blues hollering, the funky drummer beats and tunes you can actually dance and/or fuck to. Not surprisingly they shattered Beck and co into a thousand tiny pieces.

An explosive appearance on Saturday morning TV show Recovery followed (catch the evidence  here ), cementing their reputation, and saw the  JSBX return for subsequent sold out headline tours and two guest appearances on the travelling Big Day Out circus, the most recent, in 2005, being the last visit to our respective shores.

Yes, it has been a long time between drinks and squealing theremins but  The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion are finally heading back down-under appearing at the Sydney and MoNA/FOMA Festivals and at most major cities including Melbourne where  JSBX will perform Orange, their third and arguably most essential album, in its entirety.

Orange was the soundtrack for a lot of shenanigans at various parties back in the day. It even made me wanna shake my ass like a mofo, which is really saying something. Listening back to it now, it still makes me wanna let it all hang out in my rockin’ chair. I honestly forgot how dirty, raw and dang good this is.  In fact, I’m naming it my second Forgotten Gem. VERDICT: TURN IT UP, rip off your shirt, mess up your fucking fauxhawk, wannabe, and howl at the moon like you mean it! – YOURZENMINE

All festival shows are  on-sale now with all club show sales to open at 9.00am  November 16th.

The band starts at 11 and stays there. The band played an hour-long set, then returned for almost thirty minutes of encores. In the course of the show, the band tore through many favourites including “Afro”, “Blues X  Man”, 2Kindsa love”, “Calvin”, ”Chicken Dog” , “Fuck Shit Up”, “Mars, Arizona”, and of course “Bellbottoms.” –  Notes From Underground 2010

Don’t miss The  Jon Spencer Blues Explosion tearing it up throughout Australia and New Zealand this coming January.

Orange / Acme

Best New Reissue

1 of 2 Orange Dots Majordomo Dots 2010

By Tom Breihan

October 26, 2010

1994's Orange finds the Blues Explosion at the exact moment they left behind the pompadour-and-sideburns Crypt Records trash-can garage-rock universe and sidled their way into the Beastie Boys/Beck/Cibo Matto downtown genre-fucking cosmpolitan party. Beck actually shows up on Orange , literally phoning in a guest verse on "Flavor", and they toured with the Beasties soon after. It's easy to hear what those guys liked in the band's assault. The Blues Explosion were honest, organic experimenters-- fusing tons of different styles into their musical assault without compromising their ferocity or making any of it sound forced. These influences are fully internalized, rather than self-consciously stapled on. So we get Isaac Hayes disco strings on the drawn-out "Bellbottoms" intro, feral James Chance-sounding sax squawks on "Ditch", Meters/Booker T organ grease on "Very Rare", g-funk keyboard whine on "Greyhound". But we also get a scuzzed-up, pigfuck-descended rock band working at the absolute peak of its considerable powers.

On Orange , everything falls into place like it never had before and never would again. The band's gnarled, borderline-cartoonish gutbucket roots are proudly on display, and its delirious self-glorifying goes way further than it had before. (As the liner notes of this new reissue point out, Spencer didn't yell out "Blues Explosion!" too often on Blues Explosion songs pre- Orange . Here, he yells it constantly .) But most of the greatest moments on the album aren't the go-for-broke blasts of adrenaline; they're the points where the band pulls back and sticks to the pocket. It's a bit of a surprise to learn, via the newly fleshed-out liner notes, that the band was in a pretty dysfunctional and drugged-out state at the time they recorded it. Guitarist Judah Bauer floats the theory that he might've played behind the beat throughout the album because he was "junk sick." Instead, on  Orange , these three guys sound able to anticipate each other's moves way ahead of time. The tracks groove hard, and every change feels totally intuitive.

Only a couple of songs on Orange have what could even loosely be considered choruses. Spencer is the unquestioned frontman here, but his vocals are more hypeman exhortation than actual song. A few instrumentals turn up, and all the songs could really work without Spencer's vocals, fun as it is to hear him whoop out the names of different cities or scream about how much his wife likes to fuck. Even with all the smart, well-placed studio embellishments here, this feels like an excerpted version of a long, on-fire jam session. Spencer and Bauer pile on layer after layer of stomp-riff, while Russell Simins' drumming is a natural wonder: an absurdly funky push-pull with some of the thundercrack heaviness of John Bonham. Next to the spidery, introverted indie rock of its day, Orange sounded like a revelation-- an absurd burst of swagger and libido, as rendered by three total expert musicians. Even Beck sounds a bit taken aback when Spencer starts wailing, "You got the flavor!" at him after he gets done laying his verse. The thing sold 100,000 copies, and yet it didn't really go on to influence anyone, possibly because nobody else could do it like this.

This new blown-out reissue of Orange comes with a ton of extra material, none of which rivals the original album's power. In fact, the various outtakes and extra tracks really reinforce how well-sequenced and pared-down the final album actually was. These guys knew when they'd done something special, and they knew when something didn't quite measure up. So a lot of this extra stuff is fun, but none of it is actually necessary. And some of it is straight-up dogshit; I challenge anyone to make it through the 15-minute found-sound collage "Tour Dairy" even once before skipping past. But the reissue is still worthy of your attention, since it includes the 1995 EP Experimental Remixes , which cashed in on the band's newfound cachet by getting guys like Mike D and Beck to amp up the dusty breakbeak-funk elements of these tracks. Moby's take on "Greyhound" is a sleek, streamlined synth-rock thing, an early attempt at the glacial pop majesty he'd find with a song like "Southside" a few years later, while GZA turns the same song into grimy paranoia and offers the world the rare opportunity to hear someone say, "Killah Priest was born in a pillar of yeast, lost in the miscarriage," on a goddam Blues Explosion song.

Orange is the smoking hole at the center of the Blues Explosion discography. Every album that came after, in one way or another, felt like a reaction to it. Now I Got Worry was the dark hangover after the all-night party, Acme the attempt to push the LP's experimental side even further, Plastic Fang the retrenchment into pre- Orange garage-rock squall. Orange was a one-producer affair, whereas Acme ropes in an unlikely coalition that includes Steve Albini, Calvin Johnson, and Automator. And even though it succeeds in giving extra dimension to the band's hip-hop side, it feels like a big step back from the tersely funky force of the two preceding records. It's a bit of a slapdash mess-- a fiery band getting lost in the margins and, to some extent, losing their way.

On nearly half the album, they sound as great as ever. "Magical Colors" is a slow, soul-inflected swell, and it indicates that the band might've kept its hot streak going a lot longer if they'd dialed the adrenaline way back on this one and gone for slinky instead. "Do You Wanna Get Heavy?" is a loose, sidelong drunken ramble with an insanely catchy chorus that suddenly turns the song into doo-wop. "I Wanna Make It All Right" is as righteously funky as the band ever got. But the songs don't build and retract the way they did on Orange and Now I Got Worry . Instead, they smush into each other with no sense of reason or progression. The choice of Automator as a collaborator is pretty interesting, but it's also a fairly entry-level rap choice for a rock band working at the time. If they'd instead linked up with, say, Pete Rock or Organized Noize, we could be looking at an absolute classic here. Meanwhile, much of the Calvin Johnson material was recorded for the stopgap side-project record Dub Narcotic Sound System Meets the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in a Dancehall Style! , and much of it should've stayed there. And sometimes, we get that distracting barrage of new directions within the songs themselves. The album-closing "Attack", for instance, finds the band at the three-way intersection of Albini, Automator, and Atari Teeage Riot's Alec Empire, and it's exactly the flaming car wreck you'd expect.

Since Acme is so scattered and unfocused, the expanded 2xCD reissue doesn't dip in quality once the original album ends, as the Orange set does. So here we get two CDs' worth of a great band in decent but frustratingly scattershot form-- not bad, then, but no place to start.

Live sports and events

May on Peacock brings some pretty major live events, including the annual Eurovision Song Contest, plus two of the year’s biggest sports milestones: the Kentucky Derby and the Indianapolis 500. This marks the 150th year for the prestigious Kentucky horse race, while the Indiana auto race is only slightly behind, celebrating its 108th edition.

This is also a big month for reality TV on Peacock, with season premieres of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” plus an “extended and uncensored” version of the season finale of “Real Housewives” spin-off “Vanderpump Rules.” Peacock’s own original reality show “Love Undercover” makes its debut, following a group of superstar soccer players as they try to find love without revealing their true identities.

Here’s what you can look forward to on Peacock this month.

New on Peacock in May 2024: Top picks

'the tattooist of auschwitz'.

Love can blossom under even the most horrific circumstances, which is what happened for two Jewish inmates at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. This limited series adapts Heather Morris’ bestselling novel about the enduring romance between Holocaust survivors Lali (Jonah Hauer-King) and Gita Sokolov (Anna Próchniak).

Morris herself is a character on the show, played by Melanie Lynskey in a framing sequence as she interviews the elderly Lali (Harvey Keitel) about his relationship to Gita, just as the real-life Morris did in researching her book. Through flashbacks, the show chronicles the ordeal that Lali and Gita went through to stay together. Thanks to his small position of influence as the person tattooing numbers on incoming inmates, Lali is able to keep them safe while holding onto the hope of freedom.

Eurovision Song Contest 2024

Although it’s an institution going back nearly 70 years in Europe, this international music competition has been slower to catch on in the U.S. Still, its popularity has grown as it’s become easier to watch in the U.S., and Peacock has been live-streaming the annual event since 2021. This year’s contest features entries from 37 countries in Europe and surrounding areas, hoping to top last year’s winner, “Tattoo” by Swedish singer Loreen.

Because Loreen won last year, this year’s competition will be held in Malmö, Sweden, where musicians vying for the title include Olly Alexander of pop band Years & Years representing the U.K., and returning performers from Moldova and Iceland. The glittery pop aesthetic of Eurovision is pure cheese, and it’s steadily winning over American fans.

'We Are Lady Parts' season 2

(l-r) Lucie Shorthouse as Momtaz, Faith Omole as Bisma, Anjana Vasan as Amina, Juliette Motamed as Ayesha, Sarah Kameela Impey as Saira in We Are Lady Parts

It’s been nearly three years since the first season of this delightful British comedy streamed on Peacock, and fans have been waiting since then to see what happens with all-female Muslim punk band Lady Parts as they work to establish themselves in the London music scene while navigating complex personal relationships.

In the second season , the band will complete their first U.K. tour and start recording an album, while facing a rival band out to steal their thunder. They’re also still dealing with messy offstage lives and trying to balance their musical ambitions with family and home. Creator Nida Manzoor promises more original songs this season, along with choice covers, as the band members struggle to find their own definition of success.

What’s New on Peacock in May 2024? The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Love Undercover, the Kentucky Derby & More

From racing to romance to reality TV intrigue, Peacock’s the place to chill as the weather heats up outdoors.

jsbx tour

Is it summertime yet?! Eh — not quite. But things are heating up outdoors as May approaches, even as Peacock keeps things on ice with an eclectic slate of fresh streaming debuts, huge sporting events, new-rotation movies, and a celebration of culture that lasts all month long.

RELATED:  Everything To Know About The Peacock Limited Series The Tattooist of Auschwitz

New to the bird app this month is The Tattooist of Auschwitz , a Peacock original limited series based on author Heather Morris’ bestselling novel that examines the real-life story of love and loyalty between Holocaust survivors Lali and Gita Sokolov. Jonah Hauer-King, Melanie Lynskey, Anna Próchniak, Jonas Nay, and Harvey Keitel head up the cast in a poignant remembrance of hope amid hopelessness, with The Tattooist of Auschwitz available to stream from May 2.

If sizzling romance is more your speed, there’s a Peacock premiere for that, too. May 9 marks the series debut of Love Undercover , the new reality dating show with a super-addictive twist: How will potential partners react when a squad of international soccer superstars hides their wealth and fame in the name of attracting true love? Follow along as the athletic pros go incognito, concealing the affluence that just might be revealed to the mate who proves to be less than impressed by fleeting luxuries.

And, if literal speed is more your speed, there’s no better place to be in May than Peacock. A grand American sports tradition marks a major anniversary milestone with the running of the 150th Kentucky Derby on May 4, followed later in the month (May 26) by the spectacle of open-wheeled racing with the 108th Indianapolis 500 . And for a change of pace that still keeps things competitive, tune in live beginning May 7, when the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest kicks off the annual mega-music sensation, as nations vie for pitch-perfect bragging rights in the world’s biggest musical event.

Season 1 of the inventive music-themed comedy We Are Lady Parts was a hit with critics back in 2021, and this month marks the series return of the show that shadows the joyfully chaotic adventures of its titular Muslim female punk band — all while they shore up their roster and stay on the hunt to land the perfect gig. Catch up on the series in time to plug in on May 30, when We Are Lady Parts cranks it up to 11 for its amped-up Season 2 encore.

There’s even more fresh streaming stuff in store on Peacock, where the entire month of May will mark the small-screen celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. Commemorate the occasion with 31 days of a well-curated cultural collection, including new movie additions like The Joy Luck Club , The Last Airbender , and Life of Pi — as well as the streaming debut of the 2023 Chinese 3D animated fantasy feature Deep Sea .

Here’s a look at everything streaming on Peacock in May:

Sport Hannah Green defends LPGA Tour title in Los Angeles after brilliant back-nine blitz

Hannah Green holds LA Championship trophy

Hannah Green has continued her love affair with Wilshire Golf Club to successfully defend her LA Championship crown with one of the most commanding displays of the year.

Australia's former major champion produced a brilliant back-nine blitz to close with a five-under-par 66 and blow away the field in the shadows of Los Angeles' iconic Hollywood hills backdrop.

With a five-under stretch in five holes, Green finished with a 12-under 272 total, three strokes clear of in-form Swede Maja Stark (68).

Green stretched her streak to 16 consecutive sub-par rounds at the course to slam the door shut on her chasers.

"It's really kind to me. I love it here," she said.

In adding to her HSBC Women's World Champions success in Singapore last month, Green joins rampant world No.1 Nelly Korda as only the second player to notch multiple LPGA Tour victories in 2024.

"To obviously already win in Singapore and then win here this week, I hope that I can get closer to my goal being in the top 10 in the world and solidify my spot in the Olympics," the Perth prodigy said.

Green will climb from world No.18 to the cusp of the top 10, as well as soar to third in the season-long points standings behind five-time winner Korda and New Zealand's Lydia Ko.

The 27-year-old also joins greats Karrie Webb (41), Jan Stephenson (16) Minjee Lee (10) and Rachel Hetherington (eight) as only the fifth Australian to win at least five times on the LPGA Tour.

After starting the day sharing the lead with compatriot Grace Kim, Green quickly established a two-shot advantage on the very first hole.

Green's birdie and Kim's bogey left Green with the outright lead, and she retained it all afternoon despite a strong challenge coming from Stark.

Runner-up to Korda at last week's Chevron Championship, the year's first major, Stark was just one shot back after making birdies on the seventh and 13th holes as Green toiled mid-round with seven straight pars.

But a chip-in birdie on the par-3 12th broke the shackles for Green, who picked up another shot on 13 to nudge two strokes clear.

"When I chipped in on 12, I kind of felt like I really snagged one there," she said.

"So I knew what I needed to do to do. I made it really easy on myself so I'm really grateful."

Stark received a huge break on the 15th when her bunker shot clattered into the pin and stopped dead for an easy birdie when a bogey looked more likely.

Green, though, more than held her nerve — she hit the go button with a spectacular eagle three on 15, followed by a fourth birdie of the day on 16.

In collecting a cheque for $US562,500 ($A858,700), the West Australian crashed through the $US5 million ($A7.6 million) career prize money earnings.

While Green rejoiced, Kim's horror weekend continued with a demoralising six-over 77 to slump to a share of 25th.

The 23-year-old had been four shots clear at the halfway point and on track to capture a second LPGA Tour title.

Instead Kim was reduced to a putting wreck, unable to fashion a single birdie all weekend and racking up nine bogeys and a double.

Despite her disappointment, classy Kim was the first to shower her triumphant playing partner with champagne on the 18th green.

Britons are choosing to spend less money in pubs and bars than at any time since lockdown ended, according to research by Deloitte, as cost of living pressures weigh on people’s leisure habits.

The survey, which asked nearly 3,200 UK consumers if they had spent more, less or the same on leisure in the past three months, showed sentiment in “eating out” and “drinking in pubs and bars” had declined by about 6 percentage points from the previous quarter.

While an appetite for dining out dipped to levels seen at the end of 2022, pubs and bars recorded the lowest interest since reopening after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The cost of living crisis and the fact that things remain more expensive than they were a year or two years ago are impacting [consumer behaviours],” said Céline Fenech, consumer insight lead at Deloitte.

The findings come as consumers are broadly feeling more optimistic about spending overall. Deloitte research published earlier this month found that confidence reached a two-year high in the first quarter of 2024, supported by falling inflation and real pay growth.

“We are seeing signs of consumers easing their discretionary spending restrictions, but we are not seeing a splurge yet in leisure spending,” said Fenech, adding that the drop was partly due to the effects of big-spending events such as Christmas which had dented budgets.

“There is no doubt that people are still trading off between spending on food at home and on going out,” she added.

Tim Martin, founder of the JD Wetherspoon chain, said competition from supermarkets was “a big challenge for pubs”, with the disparity in prices between the two widening in recent decades. This was “causing people to drink more at home”, he said.

David McDowall, chief executive of the UK’s largest pub operator Stonegate which owns the Slug and Lettuce brand, said sales had come back to pre-pandemic levels, with a boost at Christmas when the company traded ahead of expectations. But January had been worse than expected.

“People for a week or two after a big occasion tend to be more careful with what they spend,” McDowall said. “That’s a little bit more pronounced than it would have been years gone by.”

Pub operators said they were grappling with the costs of food and drink, energy and most recently wages, an issue triggered by an increase in the national living and minimum wage .

“The cost inflation in our sector is taking longer to feed through . . . It lags perhaps compared to retail and more generally,” said Andrew Tighe, director of policy and strategy at the British Beer and Pub Association, the industry body.

Tighe added that months of wet weather had also dealt a blow to pubs. With inflation easing and the prospect of interest rate cuts on the horizon, summer would be “really important for the trade”, he said.

Survey respondents were canvassed in mid March across 11 different leisure categories, with the results to be released by Deloitte this week.

Sentiment for other activities, such as “attending live sports events”, “holidays, hotel stays and leisure travel” and “culture and entertainment” also dropped from the previous quarter but at a more modest rate.

Betting and gaming was the only leisure category to register an increase in interest.
