7 Luxurious Experiences in New York Worth the Splurge

With its lavish hotels , award-winning restaurants , legendary cocktail bars , high-end department stores, and wealth of cultural attractions , New York is a city made for jetsetters. What would you do in the Big Apple if money was no object? We have some ideas.

An avid Italophile, Laura is always on the hunt for the next great travel trends, luxury hotels, best places to eat and drink, and hidden gems. Her writing has appeared in dozens of publications. She also co-wrote "New York: Hidden Bars and Restaurants," an award-winning guide to the city's speakeasy scene.

Check into the Mark Hotel

In a city where every hotel seems to out-luxe the other, one stands out from the rest. The Mark Hotel , on the Upper East Side, is a bastion of class, with a chic design by Jacques Grange featuring graphic black-and-white striped marble floors in the lobby, a restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, a swanky cocktail bar, a Frédéric Fekkai salon, serene rooms, and a private sailboat for spins around the Hudson River and New York Harbor. For the ultimate power move, splurge on the 12,000 square-foot Penthouse Suite. With five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a massive living room, two wet bars, and a spacious terrace overlooking Central Park, it's the largest hotel suite in America—and all of it can be yours for a cool $75,000 per night.

Bergdorf Goodman retail store In New York City

Schedule a Shopping Spree at Bergdorf Goodman

After dropping your bags, hop into the Mark’s adorable pedicab bound for  Bergdorf Goodman , Fifth Avenue's most venerable shopping mecca. Here, you'll find a curated selection from fashion's biggest luxury labels including Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent. Unlike Bloomingdale’s and Barney’s, Bergdorf only has one location—on the site of a former Vanderbilt mansion—and is so legendary that it became the subject of a documentary called Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s , which features commentary by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, Karl Lagerfeld, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, and more fashion royalty. Bonus: Mark Hotel guests are granted 24/7 access to the store, so if you want to go before it opens, you can.

Lunch at Eleven Madison Park

After a morning of shopping, surely you’ll need some sustenance. What better place to wine and dine in this city than Eleven Madison Park ? Though it fell to number four on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list this year, the temple to gastronomy is still ranked as the best restaurant in North America (and a facelift in 2017 renewed its shine). Charismatic co-owner Will Guidara is the host with the most, while Chef/owner Daniel Humm serves a sublime ten-course tasting menu that fuses classic French techniques with New York flavors and flair.

Helicopter over NYC

Take a Helicopter Tour

After an epic lunch, get ready to see the city from new heights—literally. Take a cab or an Uber downtown to the launch pad for Liberty Helicopter Tours . Flights range from 12 to 20 minutes and can accommodate up to five people (excluding the pilot). Don’t forget your camera—you’ll want to shoot plenty of photos as you soar above the Hudson River, pass by the Statue of Liberty, and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city’s most famous landmarks. For the ultimate afternoon, you can even combine your helicopter tour with a harbor cruise, which takes in the skyline from the water's perspective.

See a Broadway Show

If you can’t get tickets to “Hamilton,” don’t fret. There are plenty of other great shows running on Broadway , and attending a play is one of the most quintessential New York things you can do. Aside from Lin-Manuel Miranda's smash-hit, the most popular shows right now are “Dear Evan Hansen,” which won six Tony Awards including Best Musical, “The Lion King,” “Frozen,” and “Aladdin”—not to mention the highly anticipated adaptation of “King Kong,” which arrived on Broadway last month. The reviews are mixed, but that might just be even more reason to see it and judge for yourself.

Enjoy a Late Dinner at Le Coucou

After the show, head downtown to grab a bite at Le Coucou , which finally earned a coveted Michelin star in the guide’s newest edition. Since it opened in Soho in 2016, the chic restaurant designed by Roman and Williams has been one of New York’s hottest tables. Chef Daniel Rose puts his experience at the helm of Spring in Paris to good use here, turning out French classics like pike quenelles, dover sole, and chicken with foie gras.

Cap the Night Off at Attaboy

If you still have enough energy for a night cap, it's worth the ten-minute walk east from Le Coucou to grab a stool at Attaboy. The legendary speakeasy is a favorite among New York’s top bartenders, who often head here when their own bars close for the night. Located in the former Milk & Honey space, Attaboy was founded by two of legendary bartender Sasha Petraske’s protégés, Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy. The tiny, seating-room-only bar is barely the size of a subway car, but its bartenders have a repertoire of hundreds of cocktails. Don't worry about not finding a menu—just tell them what you like and they’ll shake up an expertly crafted drink.

What is a shopping tour? - dresses on hangers

What is a shopping tour/FAQ’s?

A Style Room shopping tour is a 5 hour, private shopping experience in NYC into exclusive fashion designers’ showrooms and studios. Longer or shorter customized tours can always be arranged.

On this private behind-the-scenes tour, you will be personally escorted behind locked doors only open to clothing and accessories store buyers, store owners, magazine editors and stylists, not consumers. Showrooms and studios are where boutique, store owners and buyers come to see new collections months before they are produced for stores.

They are where magazine editors browse when they’re looking for clothing and accessories to feature on models for their upcoming stories. They are where fashion stylists come to pull items for their celebrity clients and photo shoots.

You will meet designers along your tour and see new collections being brought to life for next season. It will make everything you buy that much more special. The majority of the designers on our tours sell to Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Intermix and high-end boutiques across the country and globe. On a private Style Room NYC shopping tour experience, you will be brought into up to 5 different fashion designers’ showrooms and studios. You can purchase brand new current season clothing, handbags, jewelry and accessories (stock, not samples) directly off the racks and shelves at up to 65% off retail.

Why Book a Private VIP Shopping Tour?

On a Private Style Room VIP Shopping Tour Experience, it’s YOUR tour. You will not have other individuals you do not know on your tour while meeting designers face-to-face inside their showrooms and studios.

ARE YOU A NYC PERSONAL SHOPPER OR STYLIST?

I feel a personal shopper is someone who helps you find particular pieces for an event. I do not do that. I customize your private tour to suit your style and likes for everyday by asking for a few labels inside your closets, seeing full length photos, and finding out about your lifestyle. So you can say I’m a personal stylist who’s taking you on a personal shopping experience with a twist as we go behind locked doors and I’m pulling styles I feel you will love for multiple uses.

DO YOU HAVE EXAMPLES OF HOW MUCH I CAN SAVE AFTER THE DISCOUNTS?

  • Fashion Jewelry: retail $250-$600 (your prices on average $150-$350).
  • Accessories: retail $250-$400 (your prices on average $100-$180).
  • Women’s Clothing: retail $450-$1,600 (your prices on average $295-$795).

Our designers sell styles that are perfect for lunch with friends, at the office, to parties. We discuss beforehand what your styles are, and customize your private tour from there.

What is a private VIP shopping tour perfect for?

  • Girls Day Out
  • Husband & Wife, Boyfriend & Girlfriend
  • Anniversary Celebrations
  • Birthday Celebrations
  • Mother & Daughter
  • Families Visiting NYC
  • Tourists / Locals
  • Spousal Events and Corporate Incentive Programs
  • Student Educational Programs

How long does an average tour last?

About 5 hours. Longer or shorter customized tours can always be arranged.

ON A WALKING TOUR, HOW MUCH WALKING IS THERE?

We usually walk within a 4-6 block radius of the different designers to make it easy for everyone.

When are tours available?

As designers usually keep regular office hours, showrooms are only open Monday through Friday. While Saturdays can be arranged for special events and tours (minimum 10 guests), part of the shopping tour “experience” is seeing the showroom operating during regular business hours.

Where do we meet our tour leader?

Depending on the tour you choose, you will either be picked up in your luxury limousine or vehicle directly at your hotel, or you will meet in the lobby of the first showroom stop. Details will always be sent to you prior to the tour.

What should we wear?

As this is a tour, comfortable “fashionable” shoes are always a must. You are in the famous NYC fashion district, not bargain basement shopping. Designers and their sales team always look fashionable. Looking and feeling good is always vital when trying on beautiful clothes and accessories.

Please note that if you normally wear shapewear such as Spanx, you may want to wear or bring that with you when trying on clothing so you can see exactly how it fits before purchasing.

What kind of merchandise can we expect to find on the tour?

Brand new current stock. We have a very extensive list of categories from jewelry (fashion to fine upon request), handbags (day to evening), accessories, dresses (day & evening), women’s clothing (contemporary, classic, dressy and casual).

Can I return/exchange merchandise after the tour to the showrooms?

No. All items are final sale as you are getting exclusive discounts directly from the designer as my client.

Can I contact the designer directly after a tour to still get the Style Room discount?

No. You will be directed to their website. Start planning your next Style Room tour for new designers, new collections, and special Style Room discounts.

Do we know which designers will be on the tour ahead of time?

We do not provide that information as designers do not advertise selling directly to consumers in their showrooms. But looking at our photos gives you an incredible idea of the beautiful designs offered.

Can we request particular designers / categories to shop during the tour?

Absolutely, but it’s not guaranteed that designer is on my tour. We always have a wonderful assortment of categories & designers for each tour so you are happy.

What sizes are offered on the tour for women?

Most designers offer sizes USA 2-12

Are credit cards accepted?

Yes. We try to only work with designers who accept credit cards to make it convenient for you. Unless you have exact change if paying with cash, they prefer credit cards. Checks are not accepted.

***It is highly recommended that you contact your credit card companies before this tour to advise them that you may be doing more shopping than normal so they do not freeze your credit cards.

DO YOU OFFER REFUNDS?

No. Once you pay for your private tour, there are no refunds. That date and time has been locked in for your private tour, and other inquiries from across the globe can not book that date or time. Should you have to cancel your private tour, your tour is always valid for a later date. It never expires. Just contact me as soon as you can to discuss another date to book for your private tour.

*Please note that once you book and pay for a tour, we reserve the right to use photos taken during your tour for social media, press and advertisements.

The Best Shopping Malls in Moscow

Aviapark

Nestled within one of the globe’s most opulent metropolises, Moscow’s shopping scene paints a diverse canvas that caters to every shopper’s desire. From extravagant luxury labels to trendy high-street fashion, this Russian capital is a treasure trove where shopping transcends budgets. Amid the city’s labyrinthine streets, shopping centers emerge as attractions in their own right, offering an experience that goes beyond retail therapy. Join us as we explore seven illustrious shopping malls that satiate your appetite for both indulgence and retail delights in the heart of Moscow.

Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

Russia’s main department store, the Moscow GUM is an ultimate architectural stunner, housing a variety of high-end boutiques. Built between 1890 and 1893 and known as the Upper Trading Rows until 1920, the legendary store is now home to over 200 boutiques selling a variety of brands: from luxury Dior to affordable Zara. Even if luxury shopping is not on your to-do list, the Moscow GUM is still worth a visit – the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square, offers a variety of tasty Soviet-style eateries and makes a fantastic view in the dark.

luxury shopping tour

Beautifully located in the historic centre of Moscow, the TSUM Department Store is mere steps from the city’s important tourist attractions, including Red Square. Built in 1908, the Gothic style store sells over 1000 famous brands, including Alexander McQueen, Lanvin and Carolina Herrera. Much like its cousin GUM, the TSUM Department Store is known for its luxury boutiques, stunning architecture and great eateries.

Okhotny Ryad

Okhotny Ryad Shopping centre is yet another shopping mall in the proximity of Red Square, which unlike GUM and TSUM offers a more down-to-earth price tag. One of the largest shopping centres in Moscow, this underground arcade is home to over 160 brands of apparel, footwear, jewelry, makeup and perfumes. Okhotny Ryad is also known for its great food court, where most tourists come to stop by, once they’ve done a tour of the Kremlin .

Tsvetnoy Central Market

A pure hipster heaven, the Tsvetnoy Central Market, or simply Tsvetnoy is seven floors of shopping, eating and fun. From the high street ground floor to the deluxe boutiques on the fifth, Tsvetnoy sells brands for every taste and budget, including Walk of Shame, American Apparel, All Saints, and Vivienne Westwood. Awarded by multiple design accolades, the beautiful shopping mall is also home to many great pop-up shops, Moscow’s biggest Rive Gauche store and the best indoor farmer’s market in the city.

AFIMALL City

Somewhat farther from the city centre, AFIMALL City is a dramatically less crowded and very impressive shopping mall right in the heart of Moscow City Business District. Praised for its innovative design, the store comprises five levels of retail space with over 400 shops, 50 restaurants and cafés and an IMAX cinema. Built for adults and children alike, AFIMALL City is a must if you plan on visiting Moscow City Business District.

Metropolis Shopping Centre

Metropolis

Metropolis is where you should go for high-street retail if you don’t feel like traveling too far from the city centre. Home to boutiques like Zara, Marks & Spencer, H&M, New Yorker, GAP and River Island, Metropolis also houses a huge supermarket, bowling alley, swimming pool and a cinema.

Aviapark Shopping Centre

Aviapark

Of all the malls on the list, Aviapark takes the most time to get to, but Europe’s biggest mall is definitely worth the free shuttle bus ride. With over 500 stores, 80 eateries and a 17-screen cinema, all spread across the equivalent of 36 football pitches, Aviapark is officially the most popular shopping mall in Moscow. However, the major draw of the glass-roofed shopping centre is the 24-meter-tall pillar aquarium, filled with tropical fish.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Let a personal fashion guide steer you in the right style direction..

When you embark on a bespoke getaway to Paris with us and wish to focus some or all of your tour on shopping and fashion, you’ll benefit from the personal attention and guidance of a private guide and style expert who will design an itinerary perfectly suited to your interests.

Hoping to come away with the perfect new wardrobe that draws on this season’s couture runways? Your guide and personal stylist will put together a day or more of visits to boutiques and private auctions in high-end areas such as Rue Saint-Honoré, the Marais, Avenue Montaigne or Saint-Germain, where you may access VIP customer areas for fittings and be among the first customers to browse exclusive new collections. Welcome drinks upon the start of the tour are a possibility, too. You’ll also have the opportunity, with certain houses and brands, to order customizable pieces that are entirely unique. Whether you’re a fan of Givenchy, Dior, Balenciaga and Chanel, or more cutting-edge designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and Pascal Millet, your style expert will be something like a personal shopper, working closely with you to build the new wardrobe you’re dreaming of.

If you’re more interested in bags, accessories and jewelry, or are in the market for a bespoke new perfume, your private shopping tour will revolve around visits to high-end French gem and jewelry designers in Paris such as Cartier, De Beers and Piaget, perfumers such as Serge Lutens and the Maison Francis Kurkdjian, and luxury accessory and bags designers including Louis Vuitton, Hermes/Jane Birkin, Moreau Paris and Darris Paris. Once again, you’ll be given VIP access to collections and private viewings not generally available to the wider public, and have the option of commissioning one-of-a-kind pieces.

Finally, if it’s antiques, fine art or wine that you’re most interested in acquiring, your private guide will lead you to luxury auctions, appointments at fine antique shops with expert sellers, meetings with wine and art dealers– the sky’s the limit. Our goal is to help you acquire precious pieces that will be cornerstones in your collection, from fine vintages to 18th-century furniture and prized works of art. We’ll unlock exclusive addresses and meetings with some of the capital’s most prestigious dealers, ensuring you make some true finds.

Of course, if many or most of these interest you, your bespoke itinerary can be crafted to include all of the above. The essence of a VIP tour is, after all, to perfectly fulfill your wishes and interests– and that’s our first objective.

Gain an insider glimpse into french style trends & culture..

Of course, a VIP shopping tour also wouldn’t be one if it simply involved simple visits to high-street boutiques: after all, you don’t need a private guide to window shop. Instead, your carefully tailored shopping tour can be upgraded and complemented by attending events that will give you a true insider’s look into present-day French (and global) style trends. Privacy and exclusivity is the name of the game.

This might involve attending events and exhibitions at Paris Fashion Week that are open to the public in small numbers only; runway shows at high-end department stores such as Printemps and Galeries Lafayette (these run year-round, so there’s always an opportunity to see firsthand what the latest trends are in couture), and visits to fashion ateliers and houses, where a select number of guests are allowed in to see the secrets behind the stitches. One example of a private visit we especially recommend is to Chanel House, at 31 Rue Cambon. Not only can you witness the timeless beauty of legendary designer Coco Chanel’s former apartment and workroom: you can also visit the boutique to view new designs and even order custom-made pieces.

For something a bit more contemporary and edgy, visit the City of Fashion and Design, located right on the banks of the Seine River and featuring boutiques and ateliers from up-and-coming designers, exhibition spaces, special fashion events, runway shows and more. The cafes and restaurants in the area are wonderful places to people-watch, too.

Bespoke shopping meets bespoke beauty: indulge in luxurious moments of calm..

Shopping can be an exhausting venture, especially if you’re hoping to come away with jewelry, accessories and/or fine items for your home as well as clothing. With that in mind, your bespoke shopping tour of the French capital can easily include some luxurious moments of self-pampering and relaxation. Your personal tour designer can schedule a session at one of Paris’ most-coveted spas or beauty institutes after a morning or afternoon of shopping, for example. You might enjoy a facial, full-body treatment, relaxing steamroom, or makeover with a top beauty specialist.

If a gourmet indulgence is more your speed, why not take high afternoon tea at the Ritz, where Coco Chanel herself once lived? Or enjoy a gastronomic lunch complete with champagne at the Restaurant Alain Ducasse, situated within the sumptuous walls of the Plaza Athéneé Hotel? You might also want to enjoy a glass of wine and a delicious pastry on one of Paris’ many stunning rooftop bars, enjoying panoramic views and gorgeous decor.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

luxury shopping tour

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

10 Luxury Shopping Spots

These top 10 luxury shopping spots are filled with enough high fashion and designer labels to make shopaholics and style mavens swoon.

You don't need an AMEX Black Card to window-shop, but you definitely need big bucks to buy goods in these swanky spots. These top 10 luxury shopping spots are filled with enough high fashion and designer labels to make shopaholics and style mavens swoon.

Rodeo Drive (Beverly Hills, California)

Before 90210 was a TV show 2 times over, it was simply known as the swankiest zip code in California and home to the ultra-posh Rodeo Drive . The shops here take up just 3 city blocks, but it’s an expensive walk with more than 100 boutiques and fancy hotels. There’s Hermes, Hugo Boss, Chanel, Etro and Max Mara, and those are just a handful of the shops between South Santa Monica Boulevard and Brighton Way. Moving down the drive, you’ll find Ferragamo, David Yurman, Michael Kors, Miu Miu and more.

Champs Elysees (Paris)

With its trademark wide sidewalks and looming Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysees is the most well-known shopping street in Paris . Real estate is at a premium on this swanky thoroughfare, so it’s no surprise that only the most luxurious shops and popular chains have outposts here. The Louis Vuitton shop at 101 Champs Elysees is an architectural gem as stunning as the company’s signature bags. It’s also the only one of its kind in the world. Venture off this street to another shopping stretch on Avenue Montaigne with shops like Dior, Chanel, Chloe and French fashion house Courrèges alongside international design powerhouses.

Fifth Avenue (New York)

Channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw and stroll the Avenue . The fun starts at 49th Street with the original Saks Fifth Avenue and continues uptown with other department store greats like Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel where the old-money ladies do lunch and nouveau-riche fashionistas employ personal shoppers. There’s no breakfast at Tiffany’s, but you can gaze in the same window made famous by New York movie icon Audrey Hepburn. Even the wee ones get into the luxe life at the flagship FAO Schwartz with its giant dance-on floor piano, Middleton Doll Newborn Nursery and the Muppet Whatnot Workshop.

Via Montenapoleone (Milan, Italy)

As the world’s fashion capital, Milan has no shortage of high-end shops and cutting-edge boutiques. Many of these are located on the tony Via Montenapoleone . Fashion greats Giorgio Armani, Mila Schon and Gianni Versace all started their careers in this fashion-forward city and have shops along this street. For great Italian shoes, shoppers head to Tanino Crisci and Ferragamo, while Frette and La Perla peddle fancy knickers and silk nightgowns.

Bond Street (London)

Bond Street in Mayfair is one of London’s most posh shopping spots with boutiques tucked alongside fashion stalwarts. Keep time with watchmakers and jewelry giants including De Beers, Cartier, Harry Winston, Bulgari and the British shop Asprey. While many prime shopping areas cater to women, the fashionable stretch of Bond Street helps the proper British man suit up with specialty shops including a number of stores carrying Italian menswear labels.

Orchard Road (Singapore)

Orchard Road is one of the busiest spots in Singapore with tourists, hip teens, shoppers and sometimes even celebrities checking out the scene. The cool quotient went up even higher in this trendy hood with the opening of the  ION Orchard , a multi-use space with residences, art galleries and a super shopping mall. All of the usual suspects have fancy outposts including Dior, Diane von Furstenberg, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Miu Miu. Outside of the mall, another must-see shop on Orchard is the high-end Indian emporium Mumbai Se.

Central (Hong Kong)

Central is literally the center of Hong Kong’s business district. Among the powerful financial institutions, there’s an equally impressive collection of designer boutiques and high-end department stores. Shops are located in a series of buildings including Alexandra House, Chater House, Prince’s Building and The Landmark. There are widely recognized names like Prada and specialized shops like Paule Ka for high-end French fashion, Ascot Chang for hand-tailored Italian suits and Baccarat for luxurious crystal and jewelry.

Tretyakovsky Proezd (Moscow)

Visitors may be surprised at the opulent shopping on Moscow’s Tretyakov Drive, but serious shoppers know this is the spot to find the most expensive brands and labels. There are showrooms for the cars of the super-rich, including Bentley and Ferrari. Swiss watch company Chopard has a shop here as well as Bulgari and couture visionaries like Roberto Cavalli, Brioni and Gucci.

Mall of the Emirates (Dubai, UAE)

Dubai is known for taking luxury experiences to new extremes and the Mall of the Emirates does not disappoint. The mall, the largest outside of North America, has over 470 stores. Style stalwarts like Versace, Ferragamo and Ralph Lauren sit alongside Arabic boutiques. If that weren’t enough, there are nearly 70 restaurants, the 5-star Kempinski Hotel and an indoor ski slope.

Bloor Street (Toronto)

The best shopping in Toronto can be found along the stretch of Bloor Street West from Yonge Street to Avenue Road. The concentration of cosmopolitan shops on Toronto’s Bloor Street has earned this area the moniker “Mink Mile.” This shopper’s paradise includes international labels like Hermes, Prada and Gucci. Canada is represented by popular upscale shops including department store Holt Renfrew, menswear shop Harry Rosen and William Ashley for the finest china, crystal and silver.

The Ultimate Guide to Luxury Athens

  • Copied to clipboard

Looking to live the high life? From Michelin-starred restaurants to tailor-made tours, here are the Athens experiences you can’t miss.

Athens has a wealth of exclusive experiences to offer high rollers. Five star hotels, gourmet restaurants , swanky spas, tailor-made tours and designer shopping are a click or a phone call away. Whether you’re staying on the dreamy Athenian Riviera or in a boutique hotel in historic Plaka , here’s how you can get a taste of luxury in Athens.

Exclusive cultural experiences in Athens

Hooked on classics but not so much on crowds? Elite operators offer bespoke tours of the must-see monuments in Athens . How about a tour of the Acropolis or Acropolis Museum with an archaeologist by your side? Discover Greek Culture, Be a Greek , and Alternative Athens can tailor all kinds of exclusive cultural experiences in the Greek capital.

Fancy reliving an ancient Greek symposium—a wine-fuelled meeting of minds? The well-connected travel experts at Original Senses can arrange a gourmet supper, attended by local opinion leaders in your chosen field. Archaeology and art lovers can enjoy a Heritage Dinner  with the owner of a 19th century townhouse on Europe’s oldest street, organised by Discover Greek Culture.

Want to dive deep beneath the surface of Athens’ red-hot contemporary art scene ? Arthens will set you up on a private gallery tour with up-and-coming Athenian artists, or take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of influential art spaces.

Athens has no shortage of iconic arts venues. But blockbuster shows—especially at the summer Athens and Epidaurus Festival—sell out fast. Luxury Concierge Greece can secure you VIP tickets for a rock icon like Bryan Ferry at the open-air Odeon of Herodes Atticus ; an operatic debut at the Greek National Opera , or a hot ticket like William Forsythe or Marina Abramovic at the Onassis Stegi .

Gourmet tastes in Athens

From Michelin-starred restaurants to Mediterranean fusion, the Athens gastronomy scene is blazing. Outfits like Luxury Concierge Greece can make reservations at the hottest tables in Athens or organize private dining at atmospheric landmarks like the Acropolis Museum or Byzantine Museum . Original Senses can set you up with a private cooking class with Michelin-starred Lefteris Lazarou (or perhaps a romantic meal at his Varoulko Seaside restaurant , outside regular opening hours).

For high end seaside dining, celebrity hotspot Ithaki , overlooking Astir Beach , is a winning bet (try the lobster tortellini or monkfish meuniere). For a Mykonos vibe, head to Krabo beach , a luxe beach club set on a small sandy cove. The rock shrimp mini-burgers are legendary. Not feeling the seaside? Linger over an elevated (quite literally) lunch or dinner of refined Greek dishes like orzo with shrimp and ouzo at Sense , the elegant rooftop restaurant at AthensWas hotel. The best seats in the house are on the small terrace, right beneath the Acropolis.

For more dinners with dash, Michelin-starred Hytra  inside the Onassis Stegi delights with its avant garde take on Greek gastronomy, or savour haute cuisine at mood-lit Spondi , which has two Michelin stars. Explore Athens’ new passion for pan-Asian flavours. Baby-faced chef Antonis Drakoularakos conjures miraculous sushi at compact Sushimou  (you’ll need to book at least two weeks in advance). Ditto for Nolan , the pioneer of the city’s Greek-Asian fusion scene. Or tuck into Korean lamb chops with kimchee in a lavish rooftop setting at Athens’ outpost of London’s E&O  (at the Marriott Hotel).

We're feeling all [Michelin] starry-eyed over this table.

Designer shopping on Voukourestiou Street.

Designer shopping in Athens

Whether you’re in the market for clothing, accessories , sophisticated souvenirs , artwork, statement jewellery or edible delicacies , you’ll find plenty of locally-made treasures in Athens.

Athenians pretty much invented shopping malls when they built the Agora in the 6th century BC. Today, big spenders stake out the Kolonaki neighbourhood for their shopping fix. Pedestrianised Voukourestiou —the Bond Street of Athens—is a pantheon of designer labels (Hermès, Dior, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Bulgari and Cartier). If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for luxury fashion brands, check out Attica Department Store , which offers a VIP personal shopping service. Or jump in a taxi and flex the plastic on aspirational brands at the Dubai-esque Golden Hall shopping mall.

For a heads-up on the labels to watch in the Greek fashion scene, hit up the Kolonaki branch of i-D Concept Store , which carries local designers like Angelos Bratis (for draped dresses), Sophie Deloudi (for sculptural swimwear) and Grecian Chick (for supple leather bags and sandals). Pick up a pair of winged sandals or metallic slides from Ancient Greek Sandals first flagship store, or invest in embroidered blouses made with finest Greek silk from the new Zeus & Dione boutique.  Fine jewellery has been in fashion in Athens for centuries. From household names like Lalaounis and Zolotas to modern celebrity favourites Yannis Sergakis, Nikos Koulis, and Lito, you’ll find statement pieces to bling up any outfit.

Luxury Athens by night

Million-dollar Acropolis views are on show at the rooftop bars crowning some of the city’s finest hotels (such as GB Roof Garden, The Grand Hyatt  and The Ziller’s Roof Garden ). Looking for something more discreet? Both the King George and Perianth Hotel have penthouse suites with knockout Parthenon views , perfect for private parties and dinners.

Outdoor cinemas are a quintessential Athenian summer experience. Take movie night to another level with a private screening at Cine Aegli , the city’s oldest open-air cinema. Watch the action while you enjoy a memorable Mediterranean meal served at your seat.

On the same peninsula as Greece’s first Four Seasons hotel, Matsuhisa Athens serves Nobu’s signature sushi in a sublime seaside setting. Nowhere lays on the glitz of the Athens Riviera quite like Island Club Restaurant . Between May and September, this waterfront club is where Greek pop stars, high-rollers and visiting celebrities (think Meryl Streep and Valentino) come for dinner and dancing. There’s a villa for rent if you really want to make a night of it.

Enjoy the Athens Riviera views from Matsuhisa Athens.

Explore the Athens Riviera—by Land, Sea or Air

The Athens Riviera is an essential stop on a luxury Athens city break. Bespoke travel specialists such as Alternative Athens can whisk you off to Cape Sounion in a chauffeured limo for a sunset date with Poseidon’s mighty temple , accompanied by an archaeologist.

Admire the Athens coastline from the deck of your luxury catamaran on a private half-day or full-day cruise with Sailing Athens , while you swim or snorkel in clear blue waters along the way. For those with a week to spare, Milos at Sea —a new venture from the world-famous seafood restaurant—will take you on culinary odyssey aboard a 113 foot yacht. Dine on freshly caught fish, enjoy a cooking lesson and wine and cheese tastings, and work off all the delicious meals paddle boarding or kayaking.

Get a different perspective on the Athens Riviera on a helicopter tour with Athens Heli Tours . The epic landmarks and glittering beaches look even more spectacular from the sky.

Five-star pampering in Athens

Indulge in the ultimate luxury of downtime. Treat yourself to a spa experience at the GB Spa , inside the landmark Grand Bretagne Hotel , have a facial in the soothing, sea-view spa at the Four Seasons   Hotel . Another beautiful spot to unwind is at the Divani Apollon SPA & Thalassotherapy Centre , with 16 water jets to soothe away any pre-holiday stress.

For five-star sunbathing on the Riviera, head to Vouliagmeni Lake , which is warm enough to swim in year-round. Check into the VIP area at the water’s edge (and why not throw in a massage in a private cabana?). At the VIP strip of Astir Beach , waiter service, designer shopping and fine dining beckon. Or hit up the Margi Hotel in Vouliagmeni, home to the sexiest swimming pool in Athens. (You can pay by the day, if you’re not a guest).

Craving an adrenaline rush? How about a water-skiing or wakeboarding session at Four Seasons Astir Palace or Grand Resort Lagonissi ? Both have excellent water-sports clubs. Downtown, Holmes Place can match you up with a personal trainer who will put you through your paces in the gym, at your hotel, or even at the Panathenaic Stadium , birthplace of the modern Olympics.

Scandinavia Explorer Tour

Scandinavia Explorer

Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.

Balkan Adventure (14 Days)

An excellent trip with an outstanding tour director (Sarah Rossi) and highly skilled bus driver (Bruno). Plenty of option excursion choices along with very good included tours with knowledgeable local guides. The only down side were two of the hotels - Hotel Marinela, Sofia Bulgaria, and Mercure Belgrade Excelsior - that were in desperate need of refurbishment not to mention functioning air conditioning and bathroom cleaning. Otherwise, great trip.

The tour went beyond our expectations. Our tour director,Greg Colgin, was fantastic! He provided history, insights, funny stories, and ideas for further exploration. He, and driver, Ion, made critical decisions about our travel when weather and road conditions presented challenges. The tour included so much, as every day was loaded with adventure, including just enough free time for independent explorations. Our driver drove the bus with tremendous skill no matter the difficulties of the roads chosen. Everyone felt safe and secure.

The local guides were so passionate about their cities and countries. It was a pleasure being on this trip and can't wait to book another trip with this reputable company. Fall/Spring Swiss Alps Drive in a Porsche: Pre-set sat-nav guided

Where to begin?! When I discovered EpikDrives, I knew this would be the perfect surprise trip for my husband. Initially the packages and trip seemed “to good to be true” but Stephan was quick to respond to my 1,000 questions. We didn’t find many reviews which made me nervous but booked regardless and ARE WE GLAD WE DID! This turned out to be one of the best trips we have ever taken. Planning of the trip and booking was seamless. Stephan was so helpful and prompt with responses throughout the entire process from start to finish. Once we arrived in Switzerland, Stephan was waiting at the hotel with our supercar on arrival. We were impressed with the ease of everything! We would get into the car each morning and essentially hit “go” on the GPS. Easy GPS guidance to follow along with designated stops for sightseeing, coffee if needed, and re-fueling. We also enjoyed the binder that accompanied with printed out information of the itinerary for each day and description of the different sites or mountain passes. I would certainly give EpikDrives and Stephan a 10+ if I could and we will definitely be taking another trip with them in the near future. Thank you, Stephan, for such an incredible experience!

Discovery of Spain - 10 days

We just completed our first bus tour and our first time in Europe. We purchased the Premium Package and had the time of our lives. Safe bus drivers, very knowledgeable guides who also spoke good English. Safe, clean hotels with helpful staff. Buses are equipped with WiFi and charging ports! We purchase this tour to learn about Spain's culture and history and see some amazing sites, and we are extremely impressed with what they showed us. It was busy, but very fun! As our guide said, 'you are family for 10 days', and we met some great people who have become friends. The sun also shone for 9 of the 10 days, which was a great bonus. We will be booking another tour with you company in the years to come. Truly impressed. Thank you for all the hard work and organizing your company does so we may have the trip of a lifetime. While vacancies in retail real estate have surged since the pandemic, luxury brands from Gucci to Chanel are betting big bucks that their in-store experience will draw in shoppers for the long haul.

Kering, which owns Gucci and Saint Laurent, recently spent $1.4 billion on a building in Milan's Via Montenapoleone, The Wall Street Journal reported. The purchase comes in addition to a $1 billion property acquisition on New York's Fifth Avenue made by the company in January, the outlet reported.

Representatives for Kering did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Business Insider previously reported that Kering's investments are part of a selective real estate strategy meant to lock down highly desirable locations for its suite of leather goods, jewelry, and fashion houses, including Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen.

The Milan property, acquired from Blackstone Property Partners Europe , is one of the largest in Via Montenapoleone — an iconic upscale shopping street — and includes more than 5,000 square meters of retail space.

The Journal reported that other luxury companies, such as Chanel and LVMH, are eyeing similar investments on New York's Fifth Avenue and the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

While e-commerce has surged since the pandemic, increasing by $244.2 billion or 43% in 2020 over the previous year according to Census data, and with more and more retail establishments — including Rite Aid and 99 Cent Stores — permanently closing their doors in recent months, luxury brands haven't shied away from opening new locations to serve shoppers in person.

Forbes reported in October that luxury storefronts accounted for 38% of new store openings and 40% of retail leasing over the last year, with Dior opening stores in Orlando, Detroit, and Austin, while Alexander McQueen opened new locations in Atlanta, Boston, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

European luxury brands have snapped up $9 billion of boutique real estate locations since the start of 2023, the Journal reported. The outlet noted their spending on store costs and investments represented roughly 9% of their sales last year, up from 6% before the pandemic.

And it doesn't appear they'll be slowing down any time soon. When luxury spending ticked upward at the end of 2022, analysts quickly highlighted that the ultrawealthy keep their sights set on long-standing luxury designers like Dior and Louis Vuitton, even during times of economic hardship.

"It's just intensification of the bigger getting better," Business Insider previously reported Oliver Chen, managing director in the retail and luxury section for investment bank Cowen, said.

Representatives for LVMH and Chanel did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
