Disappointed

I bought this because the description stated it was easier to open and close than the previous model. It's no different. This one takes Rock-like muscles to get it to stay open. Still love the suitcase though.

Great size for travel

Never received it

perfect sized umbrella. wonderful product

Love my Micro Travel Umbrella!

I have bought several of these umbrellas to give as gifts! I travel a lot and so do my children and friends. It’s so easy to carry along in my handbag or suitcase. I absolutely love it!

Micro Travel umbrella

I like the item, however, the rubber on the handle is sticky. Not sure if the rubber is old and, therefore, gets sticky. I tried wilinau it but still feels the same.

Bigger than a crossbody bag but smaller than a typical backpack, a mini backpack is the perfect hybrid that combines practicality and style. And don’t let the word “mini” deter you from investing in this style because the capacity of some of these bags will certainly surprise you.

We don’t take luggage tests lightly here at Travel + Leisure (or any test for that matter) so we thoroughly researched and identified 21 mini backpacks to try in our New York City lab to start. Then, we continued the assessment by sending out the bags to be further evaluated in everyday settings like flights, commutes, and errand runs. Comfort, durability, design, and capacity were the biggest factors we took into consideration to compile our list of the best mini backpacks and we’re certain one of these bags below can match up with your next adventure.

Best Overall

Paravel mini fold-up backpack.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5

The backpack folds up into a small pouch so it can easily be tossed in a bigger bag.

There are only two pockets for organization.

This uber-portable backpack from Paravel earned its spot as the best mini backpack after scoring highly in design, comfort, and durability in both lab and real-world testing. The mini backpack has a solid capacity for its size and easily fits items like a tablet, a wallet, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, and a small pair of shoes. And, best of all, when the backpack isn’t needed anymore, it folds up into a compact zippered pouch the size of a small wallet so it can be tossed into your personal item or stored at home without taking up much space.

The discreet zippered pocket on the back of this bag is ideal for a passport or cash and there is a small front pocket for keys or chapstick, too. While there could be a few more pockets for organization, most fold-up bags don’t have any at all so it’s better to have two than zero.

Made out of a super lightweight nylon material, the backpack is virtually weightless which lightens your load while packing , and the pack still feels durable against daily wear and tear. The straps are woven nylon that won’t dig into your shoulders and they can easily be adjusted to fit your back and shoulders no matter where your day takes you.

The Details: 12 x 10 x 6 inches (unfolded); 4.5 x 5 x 2 inches (folded) | Recycled nylon

Best Budget

Madison & dakota canvas mini backpack.

  • Comfort 4 /5

The main compartment is spacious enough for a water bottle, snacks, books, and a wallet.

The fabric doesn’t have any padding so the backpack might not protect fragile items if it’s tossed around a bit.

If you’re not completely sold on a mini backpack, this bang-for-your-buck Madison & Dakota mini backpack is a great way to test the waters without spending too much. This basic bag has all the necessary components for everyday use including comfortable padded straps, a large main compartment, and a helpful front zippered pocket for smaller items. There is a solid amount of space for storing bulkier items like a water bottle or a lightweight jacket, or you can easily pack it full of smaller items like pens or snacks with plenty of room left over. The polyester material is fairly thin, which means you’ll want to be careful if you’re traveling with a tablet or other fragile items, but the fabric is very lightweight. We love the padded and adjustable straps that make the pack easy to toss onto your shoulders and plenty comfortable. Plus, the tote bag handles on top have a snap closure so the sack can be picked up and carried by hand, which is helpful for going through the TSA security line quickly or hoisting it into an overhead bin.

The Details: 13.5 x 10 x 4 inches | Polyester

Best Anti-theft

Cheruty backpack purse.

The anti-theft design includes discrete pockets for tucking away valuables while traveling.

There is a slight learning curve for opening up the backpack and finding all of the pockets.

Getting your phone, wallet, or passport stolen on vacation can put a real damper on your trip so we recommend the Cheruti Anti-theft Mini Backpack for its thoughtful, anti-theft design. Unlike a typical backpack, this one has a zipper in the back of the bag to open up the main compartment so you’ll never have to check behind your shoulder to make sure the zipper is closed. Inside the bag are a variety of discrete zippered pockets for organizing items like a tablet, passport, wallet, or keys. There isn’t much padding in the back or straps but the PU vegan leather material doesn’t add much weight or feel cumbersome to carry. One unique feature is that this backpack comes with a removable tote strap so you can carry the protective, stylish bag both of those ways, or use the top handles instead.

The Details: 12.6 x 12.6 x 5.9 inches | PU vegan leather | Fits 10-inch tablets

Best Sustainable

Topo designs rover pack mini backpack.

  • Durability 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

During our tests, the lightweight recycled nylon material and ample padding made this pack virtually effortless to wear.

The front buckle and drawstring closure make it less convenient to swing the bag around to quickly grab something out.

This rugged mini backpack from Topo Designs is a champion when it comes to comfort, durability, and sustainability. Its 100 percent recycled nylon fabric is dyed from certified dye mills without harmful chemicals and the backpack has a Fair Wear certification for production, ensuring the welfare and safety of garment factory employees. Although the backpack looks small at first glance, the 10-liter capacity can fit a range of small and large items including a tablet in the back slip pocket and lip balm or keys in the small front pocket. Since the top has a buckle and drawstring closure, it’s not as convenient to grab something out of your pack but the double closure does provide peace of mind that your items are tucked away safely while traveling. With adjustable straps for a customized fit and a fully padded back panel, the backpack provides hassle-free comfort whether you’re trekking through the woods or the concrete jungle.

The Details: 13.5 x 8.5 x 3.75 inches | Recycled nylon | 10 liters | Tablet sleeve

Best Classic

Dakine mini backpack.

The larger capacity and traditional design resemble a regular-sized backpack.

The laptop sleeve isn’t padded or zippered.

The 12-liter Dakine Mini Backpack offers a generous capacity for a mini backpack, as it’s able to fit laptops up to 14 inches long. Resembling the style of a typical school backpack, the timeless design makes this bag versatile for running errands or going into the office. The 600-denier recycled polyester material is impressively lightweight without feeling flimsy, and this water-resistant fabric boasts excellent durability designed for long-term use. To keep the contents of the pack safe, the bottom panel is padded for extra protection (especially if you do pack electronics).

While the slip pocket in the back for a laptop or tablet isn’t padded or zippered, all of the contents remained secure despite the backpack being dropped off a counter during lab testing. There isn’t much padding around the backpack but the material is soft enough that the adjustable straps and back panel don’t cause any discomfort while wearing it for long periods of time.

The Details: 15 x 11 x 7 inches | Polyester | 12 liters | 14-inch laptop sleeve

Best for Hiking

The north face borealis mini backpack.

The back panel and straps have an impressive amount of padding for extra comfort while trekking.

The side pocket is slightly awkward since it isn’t quite big enough for a water bottle.

If the outdoors are calling, you’ll want to be prepared with all of your hiking essentials in North Face’s comfortable and lightweight Borealis mini backpack. Whether you’re packing items like a beanie, neck gaiter, or even a lightweight layer, the front compression straps help keep items packed tightly so they won’t shuffle around while on the trail. Although we found the side pocket is a bit too small to fit a water bottle, there is plenty of space in the main compartment for a bottle and you can easily use the side pocket for a phone or other small items you want to quickly access.

The best part of this athletic-style backpack is the thick and breathable padding on the back panel and adjustable straps as that adds impressive comfortability for wearing the pack for long periods of time. And, if you want to use this bag for non-outdoor related activities, there are a variety of interior pockets for tech like a tablet sleeve and slot for phone chargers.

The Details: 13.5 x 8.6 x 4.15 inches | Recycled polyester | 10 liters

Best for Commuters

Bellroy classic backpack compact.

  • Design 4.5 /5

This style has a variety of useful pockets for a laptop, tablet, phone, notebook, and more.

It can be a little tricky to open up the main compartment because the zipper is hidden under a hooded cover.

Heading into the office? Bellroy’s mini backpack has all the organization you need without the hassle of lugging a bulky bag around. Designed with ample storage for technology, the laptop sleeve is ideal for a computer 13 inches or smaller and there is a super convenient top pocket for a phone, too. For tablets or eReaders, there is a small slip pocket on the front of the laptop sleeve so you can pack this bag up with everything you need for work or school.

When you’re packing up tech, you’ll likely need a spot for chargers or other accessories, so we love the spacious mesh pocket for storing smaller items since you can easily see the items tucked away in that spot. While the main zipper can be a little tricky to locate because of the edged fabric that hides the zipper, it gets easier to locate the more the bag is used. Come rain or shine, this comfortable, padded backpack is made with durable, water-resistant recycled fabric so you won’t have to worry about the pack getting damaged whether you commute via bike, train, car, or on foot.

The Details: 15.7 x 10.2 x 7 inches | 16 liters | 13-inch laptop sleeve

Best Splurge

Dagne dover dakota backpack.

Dagne Dover

The neoprene material is lightweight, water-resistant, and feels super premium.

Dust and dirt cling onto the material easily but it does come with a drawstring bag for storage.

The sporty Dagne Dover Small Dakota Backpack is made with a sleek, plush neoprene material that feels ultra high-end and is a signature of the brand's best bags . From the gym to a restaurant, this versatile mini backpack has an impressive enough capacity for a small grocery haul, a lightweight jacket, or large 32-ounce water bottle. When it comes to comfort, this backpack truly shined throughout all of our tests thanks to its thick neoprene that adds extra cushioning in the back panel and straps so, no matter how heavy a load is, the bag didn't dig into our shoulders. Plus, the wide-tooth zipper glides like a champ even when the backpack is filled to the brim.

The pockets proved to be perfect for storing a variety of items, especially the discrete front panel pocket and slip pocket for a tablet. The key leash in the main compartment makes it easy to locate your keys without having to dig around and, when you get home from running errands, the backpack comes with a storage bag to prevent dust or dirt from clinging onto the backpack.

The Details: 13 x 9.5 x 5 inches | Neoprene | 8 liters

Best Organization

Aotian mini nylon backpack.

There are just the right amount of pockets to stay naturally organized without it feeling too intricate.

This is one of the smallest mini backpacks we tested.

It’s not always easy to stay organized on the go but thanks to the plethora of pockets built into the Aotian Mini Nylon Backpack, it’s easier than ever to find a spot for everything. There are three different-sized compartments for storing a variety of everyday essentials. Working back to front, the largest compartment can hold bigger items (like a tablet up to 10 inches long) in a handy slip pocket and the middle compartment is best for medium-sized items like a wallet, deodorant, or charger. Although the front pocket is the smallest, it’s ideal for miniature items including lip balm or a roll-on perfume stick. The straps are made out of sturdy nylon fabric and they can quickly be adjusted while you head out the door. This was one of the smallest backpacks we tried but it still packs a punch with a generous capacity, durable nylon exterior, and polyester lining that showed no signs of damage after a lab test and real-world testing.

The Details: 12 x 9.4 x 4 inches | Polyester, nylon | 10-inch tablet sleeve

Other Mini Backpacks We Liked

Of the 21 mini backpacks we tested, the ones below almost made our list but they ultimately fell short during testing due to slight issues with comfort, durability, and capacity.

Itzy Ritzy Mini Diaper Bag : This spacious bag has stylish gold hardware and it’s functional for being out of the house with kids thanks to the removable changing pad. However, the straps aren’t very comfortable due to a lack of padding and metal buckles that rest awkwardly on the chest when adjusted.

Adidas Linear Mini Backpack : This sporty bag is very lightweight and comfortable to wear, making it the perfect pack for the gym but the other athletic and outdoorsy bags we tested had a few more pockets for organization.

Herschel Supply Co. Mini Backpack : This compact backpack is a very cute style and shape, with plenty of color options to choose from. However, the front pocket zipper is covered by a security flap that makes it too difficult to get things in and out of an already very small pocket.

Carhartt Mini Backpack : Spacious and super durable, this canvas Carhartt mini pack certainly lives up to the brand’s reputation for durability and ruggedness. However, the straps are made out of nylon without any padding so they weren’t the most comfortable, and we wish there were a few more pockets for storage.

T+L researched and identified 21 mini backpacks in a variety of shapes and sizes (all miniature, of course) and began by testing each pack in our New York City lab. Then, we sent the backpacks out into the world for further evaluation in everyday settings like running errands, commuting, and traveling via airplane, train, or car.

In the lab, we examined the design of each pack by looking at every pocket, zipper, and buckle to get a feel for the materials. Then, we loaded up the bags with essentials like wallets, lip balms, keys, small water bottles, extra shirts, and hand sanitizer to judge the capacity. At the end of lab testing, we tossed the packs off of a counter to see how durable they were, and if the contents packed inside remained safe while being tossed around.

While lab testing was helpful to take a magnifying glass to each pack, we continued using the mini backpacks in day-to-day life to get the most well-rounded testing notes. We used the bags for gym visits, grocery store trips, flights, and more to continue judging the comfort, durability, design, and capacity. After all of the testing was complete, the backpacks noted as having generous padding for comfort, spacious interiors that are intuitive to pack, and durable materials that will stand the test of time earned the highest average scores overall.

Tips for Buying a Mini Backpack

Look for pockets for organization.

One of the best things about a mini backpack is that it should provide a bit more space and storage solutions than a purse. To stay naturally organized while out and about, look for a bag with multiple compartments, interior pockets, and exterior pockets, too. If you like to travel with a tablet or laptop, search for a small backpack with a sleeve that will fit the dimensions of your device.

Padding equals more comfort

Mini backpacks are generally lighter in weight due to their smaller size (which helps when wearing the bag for long periods of time), but the best way to prioritize comfort is by investing in a pack with lots of padding. The back panel and straps should have cushioned or thick fabric to prevent digging in and other discomfort. In addition, more padding can also protect the contents of your bag from being damaged in case of falls or rough handling.

The typical size of a regular backpack is about 20 to 25 liters so anything less than 20 liters is on the smaller side. In general, a mini backpack will have a capacity of 8 to 16 liters with most sitting at around 12 liters. The typical dimensions of a mini backpack will be near 12 x 10 x 5 inches, give or take a few inches.

Mini backpacks might surprise you with the amount they can hold. While it ultimately depends on the capacity and dimensions of your specific backpack, you should have no issues fitting essentials like a wallet, lip balm, earbuds, a phone charger, and keys. Other larger items you may be able to fit include a tablet, small laptop, lightweight jacket, and a water bottle.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

Anna Popp is a Commerce Writer at T+L where she writes nearly all of the team’s tested articles whether products were evaluated in the lab or a real-world setting. Anna participates in every travel test and, for this one, she tested the Dagne Dover Small Dakota Backpack by using it to do light grocery shopping — and discovered the bag can fit an entire loaf of bread with minimal squishing.

The Best Packable Daypack for Travel

The Away The Packable Backpack, one of our picks for best packable daypacks for travel.

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

Packable daypacks are a perfect option if you need a lightweight spare bag to stash inside your luggage when you travel. They’re also great if you need an extra bag while running an unexpected errand during your daily commute.

After testing 18 packable daypacks, we chose four lightweight, portable, well-constructed bags to fit a variety of situations, including traveling, hiking, and commuting.

Although every trip has its specific considerations, the bags we recommend share a few similar qualities. All of them are water resistant to some degree, pack down small enough to fit easily into a carry-on bag, and hold at least 20 liters comfortably. We picked a bag for city travelers , a pack good enough for daily use , and a lightweight bag that stays dry in stormy weather . For space-conscious travelers, we have a pick that fits in the palm of your hand .

The research

Why you should trust us, compact and comfortable: away the packable backpack, more structure: waterfield packable backpack, a lightweight bag to carry in the rain: matador freerain22 waterproof packable backpack, a pack that fits in your palm: sea to summit ultra-sil day pack, how we picked and tested, other good packable bags, the competition, what to look forward to.

I’ve covered travel luggage and bag design for Wirecutter for nine years and have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time.

For this guide, I built on previous years of experience and research by a writer and two editors who have, among them, worked remotely from every continent except Antarctica.

We developed our earliest criteria for this piece after doing an interview with Sara Morrow, an archaeologist who spends summers working expeditions on a small island off the coast of Ireland. She uses a packable daypack to transport her tools, notebooks, and personal items between the base camp and dig sites, and she considers it a necessity in the field.

Personally, I try to pack lightly and almost always travel with at least one packable bag to use on small day journeys once I’ve reached my destination.

The Away The Packable Backpack, one of our picks for best packable daypacks for travel.

Away The Packable Backpack

Compact and comfortable.

Remarkably light and easy to compress, this bag ticks all the boxes for daily use while traveling: comfortable, quietly stylish, and sturdy.

Buying Options

Who this is for: It’s a good option for anyone who wants a packable bag that takes up as much space as a pair of socks but is still comfortable. Its casual look is also unlikely to draw attention when you’re walking around.

Away’s The Packable Backpack is made of a blend of light recycled nylon, with classic, if somewhat minimal, good looks.

It doesn’t weigh much, and it’s comfortable to wear. On your shoulders, the only thing that sets this bag apart from a regular backpack is the lack of structure, a side effect of the bag’s 7-ounce weight. It doesn’t have the same reassuring heft of a traditional backpack (no packable bag does), but when it’s filled with a few odds and ends, its wide straps and sensible shape are comfortable to carry on your back. To save on weight, Away designed the top of the bag like a cinch tote with a flip cover—a simple and effective solution.

It packs up small. When not in use, it rolls up and fits into a separate zippered pouch; it’s about the size of a bunched-up heavy T-shirt.

It’s well made and well priced. For a bag of this quality, it’s an excellent bargain. Away uses the same materials in similarly designed packable tote and sling bags, which we recommend if you’re looking for packable options that aren’t backpacks.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A minor quibble is the lack of internal organization beyond the one small, zippered wallet pocket. If you need more organization, the WaterField Packable Backpack has another front pocket and bottle holders. But it’s such a small complaint for bags in this category that it’s hard to call it a flaw.

  • Expanded dimensions: 18.1 by 11 by 5.9 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 7 by 4.5 by 2.5 inches
  • Weight: 7 ounces
  • Capacity: 19 liters
  • Warranty: 100-day return and one-year warranty

A black WaterField Packable Backpack, one of our picks for best packable daypacks for travel.

WaterField Packable Backpack

A more structured pack.

Slightly heavier weight and more-advanced materials give this backpack a reassuring heft and impressive water resistance—and a high price tag. It’s comfortable enough to use as your daily backpack.

Who this is for: Anyone who values a slightly mature look with extra durability and protection from the rain will appreciate this pack. However, it is our most expensive pick.

The WaterField Packable Backpack is a well-built travel backpack that marries the heft of a regular backpack with the compactness of an easy-to-pack tote.

It looks and feels like a regular backpack. In addition to being the most traditional-looking backpack of our picks, it feels the most like a traditional backpack. The shoulder straps, which are ergonomically shaped and lined with breathable mesh fabric, make the bag easier to carry over long distances.

It has more organization. WaterField’s Packable Backpack has a front zippered pocket and two open side pockets that could hold a water bottle and an umbrella. When you’re not using the bag, you can fold it down into a built-in packing pocket, which doubles as an interior zippered pocket when the bag is on your back.

Its high performance matches its high price. However, it’s WaterField’s attention to materials that sets this bag apart from our other picks (and increases the overall price). A layer of Taslan nylon—a very thin, but sturdy, fabric—is layered with a structural tricot mesh and a robust water-resistant coating. Water practically bounced away from this bag during testing—even more so than with our pick from Matador —so it’s a good option for wet climates.

  • The Waterfield Packable Backpack weighs about 12 ounces; it’s heavier than our other picks but not by much. The bag holds 16 liters of stuff, which is on the smaller side compared with our other picks but still plenty big for a single traveler on a walk. It doesn’t pack down as small as our other picks.
  • It’s a little tricky to pack into its self-contained pocket. It’s not as simple as just inverting it and stuffing away to your heart’s content. You have to do a series of particular folds to pack the bag properly, which WaterField shared in a video . There’s a fine line between portability and irritability, and this bag cuts that line very close.
  • Expanded dimensions: 15 by 11 by 6 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 9 by 9 by 3 inches
  • Weight: 12 ounces
  • Capacity: 16 liters
  • Warranty: “practical lifetime” repair or replacement

A person wearing a black Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack.

Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack

A lightweight bag to carry in the rain.

This bag will keep your things dry during adventures in wet climates or unpredictable weather. It packs down to about the size of a potato, but its lack of overall structure isn’t ideal for long hikes or days of carrying.

Who this is for: If you need a spare lightweight bag that can stand up to the elements while taking up very little space, the Freerain22 backpack is for you.

The Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack is excellent in wet climates or anywhere where you might realistically expect to get caught in the rain—think hiking around Seattle or touring London in the fall.

Close-up of a person wearing the Matador Freerain 24 2.0 to show the water bottle holder on the side of the backpack.

It’s mini but mighty. The Freerain22 backpack folds down so small—to about the size of a pocket camera—that it feels like a magic trick. Made from 30-denier abrasion-resistant Cordura nylon (denier is a measure of the fiber thickness in a fabric), it kept our things dry even in a rainstorm, although a small amount of humidity and moisture did get in on occasion while we were hiking around Hawaii. The main compartment opens and closes with a roll top that buckles down on the sides like a dry bag. It’s the best possible design if you’re serious about keeping out water.

It’s versatile—to a point. During our testing, it worked well for travel and on the trail, as long as we didn’t try to carry too much, too far. This pack’s mesh shoulder straps, though very breathable and wide enough to distribute the weight, are like two pieces of hosiery: barely there. And though they are wide enough to resist pinching, a thin strip of fabric can only do so much to protect your clavicles. In addition to using this pack for travel and hikes, we also liked to throw the Freerain22 pack into a jacket pocket in case it rained during commutes around town.

It has some nice extras. Along with a sternum strap, removable hip strap, and loops to hold trekking poles or ice axes, it has two side pockets for water bottles, with side buckles for securing the containers in place, and a zippered front pocket. Other than that, it doesn’t have much organization. But that’s not why you buy a bag like this. The Freerain22 backpack is best as a just-in-case bag. It’s so small that you can bring it with you everywhere, and when you need it, you’ll be glad you have it.

  • The compromises that are necessary to shrink a bag this small also become its flaws. The shoulder straps are so thin and insubstantial that it’s impossible for the Freerain22 backpack to be comfortable over long distances, especially when you’re carrying more than 10 pounds.
  • Some of our testers also found that the shoulder straps, though adjustable, were so long that they couldn’t get the straps short enough to fit their shoulders and frame.
  • It’s not as structured as our other picks—it feels more like a reusable shopping bag on your back. If you want a stiffer, more traditional backpack feel, consider the WaterField Packable Backpack .
  • Expanded dimensions: 19.5 by 11 by 9.5 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 5 by 3 inches (length by diameter)
  • Weight: 6.6 ounces
  • Capacity: 22 liters
  • Warranty: one-year repair or replacement

A person wearing a yellow and gray Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Day Pack.

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Travel Day Pack

A pack that fits in your palm.

Toss this lightweight, phone-size packable bag into your luggage or coat pocket, and you’ll never get caught without a spare bag again. If you need something to carry more often, though, you might prefer one of our more structured picks.

Who this is for: It’s fantastic for anyone who needs a light, spare bag that they can take with them anywhere, anytime.

The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Day Pack is perfect to keep in your pocket or in the glove compartment of your car—it’s handy for when, say, you need a spare bag at the market.

Close-up of a person holding a folded Ultra-Sil Day Pack in the palm of their hand.

It’s our most packable pick. The Ultra-Sil pack is the smallest and lightest packable backpack we recommend. Packed up, it’s very discreet: nearly the size of a keychain accessory.

It’s tougher than it looks. The bag itself is a no-frills sack made from a paper-thin siliconized Cordura nylon, which means it’s very light and water resistant. It has reinforced stitching at stress points, so it can carry more weight than you would expect. That said, since this pack is made of such thin, light material, carrying large or awkwardly shaped loads is somewhat uncomfortable, especially when compared with our more-structured picks.

  • With a bag this small and light, any flaw is an aspect of its narrowly engineered use. Are the shoulder straps thin? Of course! Would it be nice if this bag—which deploys from a small sack that fits in the palm of your hand—had more back padding? Yes. But that would also make it larger and heavier. If you’re not willing to trade some comfort to get the smallest possible carry, this isn’t the bag for you.
  • The bag also won’t keep your things dry in the rain like some of our other picks, such as the Waterfield Packable Backpack or the Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack .
  • Expanded dimensions: 19 by 11 by 8 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 3.5 by 2 by 1.5 inches
  • Weight: 2.5 ounces
  • Capacity: 20 liters
  • Warranty: lifetime repair or replacement

Several packable daypacks we tested, shown side by side.

Depending on whether you plan to scale cliffs or tour museums , certain features become more or less important when you’re choosing a day bag.

To help make sense of what to prioritize among the dozens of available options, we pored over articles across many outdoor publications and consulted other comparative reviews and advice from sources such as REI and GearLab .

We also considered our own experiences to determine what makes a great packable daypack. Here’s what we look for:

  • Weight and size: The whole point of a packable daypack is that it packs well, so weight and compressed size are important factors. Carrying capacity generally correlates to the weight and size of a bag, except in more explicitly technical packs, which may cut down on weight by using lighter, but more expensive, materials.
  • Ergonomic features: Stowable daypacks can look and feel like stuff sacks with straps, or they can be full, ergonomically shaped backpacks. The wearability of a bag usually comes down to its load distribution and support system (such as the sternum strap on the Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack ).
  • Organization: Most packable daypacks come with at least two compartments—the largest, or main, compartment and the (often attached) pouch into which the whole pack stows away. Beyond those, an external pocket that can hold small, frequent-use items (such as keys) or sleeves for water bottles are useful. The drawback of adding more organization is that it decreases the packability of a bag and often contributes to weight.
  • High-quality materials: Because a packable daypack needs to be able to carry at least some weight when in use but still fold up for storage, materials make the difference between a lightweight pack that feels cheap and flimsy versus one that you feel confident filling to the max and carrying into a rainstorm. The fabrics and composite materials used in higher-quality bags are light and durable but remain nearly invulnerable to water.
  • 15- to 25-liter capacity: This seems to be the ideal range for a pack that can hold a full day’s worth of stuff while remaining reasonably lightweight and portable. It’s enough to accommodate a 13-inch laptop, along with some rain protection, a camera, an extra layer of clothing, and whatever else you might need for a day about town.
  • Weather resistance and durability: Although a few bags we liked, such as the Matador Freerain22 pack and the WaterField Packable Backpack , come extremely close, total waterproofing is a lot to ask of any lightweight bag. At a minimum, a pack should provide enough protection to keep you and your gear dry through at least a few minutes of wet weather. The better packs often feature more-careful construction, which is visible in details such as sealed and tighter stitching (our pick from Matador), self-sealing YKK zippers (our pick from Away), and reinforced bottoms (our pick from WaterField).

If you’re planning some heavy excursions and looking for the absolute best equipment: You might consider the Hyperlite Summit 30 . It’s a remarkable piece of equipment, a full-size 30-liter backpack weighing only 0.8 pounds. Made of Dyneema composite fabric, Hyperlite backpacks are highly water resistant and long-lasting. And each one folds up to take the same space as a couple of T-shirts. Most people looking for a spare travel bag don’t need a $200 ultralight backpack designed for hiking. But for a rare type of traveler, the Summit 30 might be the best choice.

If you need a heavy-duty bag for hiking: The Matador Beast28 Ultralight Technical Backpack is a capable hiking daypack that’s hydration-bladder compatible, but not everyone needs a packable bag this hefty. Alone, it’s 1.25 pounds, which is heavier than any of our picks. For the price, we prefer the simplicity of our other picks. But the Beast28 is a good bag, albeit with a large footprint even when it’s packed up.

If none of our picks are available: Consider the REI Co-op Flash 18 Pack , another decent choice in the sub-$50 cinch-top-bag category. It’s a fine alternative, but for a little more money you get a lot more value with our other choices.

Aer Go Pack 2 : The previous version was a pick, but the current model is too bulky to be packable; it takes up more space in your suitcase than would ever be worth it on a trip.

Cotopaxi Luzon 18L Backpack : This is a decent small backpack, but the drawstring closure top kept this out of consideration. Not only are drawstrings a hazard if they slip out, but they are prone to breaking, and the cinch closure is useless against bad weather.

Dakine Packable Backpack 22L : These are tempting bags, especially for the price. But the fabric (115-denier recycled nylon) feels thin and underwhelming—although it’s Bluesign approved, which we like. The problem is the bag’s closure, which only has a cinch top. If Dakine added a lid that could close over the design similar to Away’s The Packable Backpack , we’d likely make it a pick.

Eddie Bauer Stowaway Packable 20L Backpack : This bag was previously our runner-up pick for hikers. Its zipper and material felt flimsy enough that we were concerned they would fail with long-term use.

Fjällräven High Coast Foldsack 24 : This is a good bag at a slightly high price, but it didn’t make the cut for us because of its weight and large size even when rolled up.

Gonex 20L Lightweight Packable Backpack : Although it has rave reviews online , we found the stitching was more fragile than we like to recommend.

L.L.Bean Stowaway Pack : The Stowaway Pack was organized and comfortable enough that we liked carrying it on the hiking trail, but we preferred our pick from Matador for its better weatherproofing.

Mystery Ranch In and Out 19 : The In and Out 19 is made of a 100-denier Cordura nylon, which was strong but too heavy for us. The biggest mystery during our testing was how to fold this bag back into its pouch.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack 27L : This is simply a bad design for a tourist. The tote’s large handles, which hang loosely off the back of the bag when it’s worn as a backpack, are a huge red flag for personal safety and security. And all the extra straps and connections make carrying and using the bag a pain.

REI Co-op Stuff Travel Pack - 20L : This is a competitor of the Matador Freerain22 pack that falls short. It mimics our Matador pick in its design, but not in the quality of its materials. Its flimsier fabric and zipper will fail sooner.

The Best Packable Backpacks for Travel

Best Packable Backpacks 00 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Jul 10, 2023

Though a hard-sided suitcase or a full-size travel backpack should serve as your primary storage solution while flying or on the road, packable bags can make a stellar and sensible addition to any travel loadout, providing a smaller, secondary vessel for shorter excursions that don’t require your complete kit. Whether hitting the trails for a day hike or exploring the concrete jungle of a new city, packable backpacks offer a more streamlined and compact carrying solution to traditional pieces of travel luggage — plus they don’t make their user stick out like a sore thumb or readily announce themselves as being an obvious tourist.

While options in this space have traditionally been fairly limited, the packable backpack and bag space has absolutely exploded in recent years, giving way to an ever-growing number of increasingly lightweight, compact, and utilitarian packs that can conveniently break down and stow away when not in use. With so many bags currently on the market, it can be difficult to know which to even consider, much less buy. So, with this in mind, we’ve thoroughly scoured the segment to deliver this handpicked guide to the best packable backpacks and bags for travel and adventure . Alongside counting down our picks for the best packable bags on the market, we’ll also be delving into which factors to consider when shopping.

The 6 Main Areas To Review When Buying A Packable Backpack Or Bag

While they serve a similar function to regular everyday-focused backpacks, there are more than a few factors that are unique to the packable bag space. Below, we’ll briefly touch on half a dozen of the most crucial areas to take into account when shopping around for a packable backpack.

Video Guide: Best Packable Backpacks

Want a better idea of how these bags pack down? Then be sure to check out our accompanying 4K video review of the  best packable backpacks  for a visual breakdown.

Storage Volume: The entire purpose of a packable backpack is to provide a smaller, more streamlined storage solution so your main suitcase can be left at your hotel or accommodation. As a result, the amount of storage space that one of these bags offers is arguably the most important factor to consider — along with packed size, which we’ll touch on more below.

Weight: While not quite as important as packed size or storage volume, the weight of a packable bag is still more than worth taking into account, as it will be another item that will be added to your larger kit — and its overall weight. Fortunately, these secondary storage solutions have been engineered to be as compact and lightweight as possible, with most models tipping the scales at around the one-pound-mark — though some packable bags are as light as just 0.2lbs.

Materials: Just like with hiking packs or everyday carry bags , the overall quality and durability of a packable backpack will primarily boil down to the materials used to make it — as well as the construction technique(s) used to piece it together. In addition to a bag’s primary construction, you’ll also want to look into whether or not it features a separate liner material, if its bottom (or any other areas) has been reinforced, or if the bag has been fortified through the use of a PU or DWR coating or treatment. Despite the lightweight and packable nature of these bags, quite a few models on the market are actually crafted from some surprisingly hardwearing, high-denier materials, with ripstop nylon and CORDURA being two of the most popular choices.

Hardware: Though a bag’s primary construction is the main factor determining quality and durability, its hardware also plays a key role in its overall longevity, performance, and toughness. This includes everything from zipper tracks and pulls to buckles and sternum straps to carabiners and metal keepers and loops.

Organization & Storage: Unlike office bags or travel packs that are rich with organizational features, packable models tend to be fairly sparse when it comes to pockets and compartments. For this reason, it’s important to review a bag’s internal organizational features, as well as if it has exterior pockets or other storage amenities such as external attachment points or MOLLE webbing .

Packed Size: The primary benefit of a packable bag is that it can be broken down and stored in a larger bag when not in use. As such, the size a packable bag breaks down to is extremely important. Luckily, most manufacturers give a decent sense of just how compact their respective bags get when folded, rolled, or packed. While on the subject, it’s also worth noting that most of these bags come with an accompanying stuff sack, while a few models on the market break down and are self-stowing, fitting into one of their own pockets or compartments.

Selection & Testing Process

How & Why We Got Hands-On With These Particular Packable Backpacks

Best Packable Backpacks Tested

As always, we began our search for the best bags in this particular segment by first compiling a list of what we suspected to be the best packable backpacks on the market, based on criteria including style, overall design, features and amenities, comfort, hardware such as buckles and zippers, shell material , secondary materials such as the constructions used for items like the bag’s shoulder straps or liner. Additionally, we also looked at not only the total storage volume being offered, but also how small of a form the bag breaks down into when not being used — and how big said form is relative to the internal real estate the carry solution offers when unstuffed. Using these parameters and criteria, we then proceeded to get our hands on each and every model that we suspected of being one of the best of the best — all of which we then put to the test via our hands-on field-testing and review process over the following weeks, allowing us to narrow down our initial list to a final shortlist that we found stands as the latest and greatest the segment has to offer.

When using these packable backpacks, we tested them in several different ways and judging several different areas. This included not only how the bag operated and functioned compared to a normal backpack — with us paying special attention to whether or not sacrifices had been made to make the thing more packable, or if it could pass as a regular backpack. This included taking into account each bag’s list of features, how comfortable it was, and if it showed any signs of tearing, fading, or failing over the course of our testing. With this out of the way, we then proceeded to spend time breaking down each of these packable bags into their packable form. Doing this for every bag side-by-side-by-side allowed us to not only see which broke down into the smallest and most compact forms, but also which were the easiest to pack, and to unpack. We also made sure to focus on how these bags looked right after being unpacked from their compacted form.

Our Top Packable Bag Picks

micro travel pack

  • Packable version of/modeled after Herschel’s ultra-popular Classic Backpack
  • Offers fantastic value
  • Collapses into own internal pocket
  • Sold in huge variety of colors & patterns
  • Backed by limited lifetime warranty
  • Not as rugged as other more premium packable bags
  • Looks very wrinkled after being packed away

Best Minimalist Pick: Offered in more than a dozen different patterns, solid color, and camo options, the Herschel Packable Daypack is about as minimalistic as packable bags get. Offering 24.5 liters of storage space, this bag is modeled directly after Herschel’s best-selling Classic Backpack, sharing its exact shape and silhouette while seeing the regular pack’s polyester or recycled 600-denier construction jettisoned in favor of a markedly thinner and more pliable 70-denier poly ripstop shell. While this may not sound like the most hardwearing material, it actually possesses decent strength, plus if it should fail under regular use, Herschel stands behind the product with a limited lifetime warranty.

Herschel Packable Daypack 1

The bag is comprised of a single main compartment that’s supplemented via a single quick-access front pocket. The interior of the pack also features an internal self-storage pocket with a snap closure that the entire bag can fit inside when not in use. Herschel’s Packable Daypack also features custom HERSCHEL-branded plastic zippers and adjustable webbing shoulder straps. And, while this minimalistic storage and carry solution is largely devoid of organizational amenities, its incredibly spartan design allow it to break down into one of the most compact forms of any of the packable bags that we tested — backpack or duffel.

Best Space-Saver: A larger, updated version of the In & Out 19, the Mystery Ranch In and Out 22 is a feature-laden daypack that offers nearly 22 liters of storage volume while breaking down to a size no larger than a Nalgene bottle . Like its 19-liter predecessor, this bag was engineered from the ground up as a grab-and-go, do-it-all carry solution that lends itself just as well to use out on the trail as it does at the airport or railway station. Constructed around an innovative spring steel frame, the Beast18 sports a UTS-coated, DWR-treated 210-denier Robic nylon shell that’s been paired with a 100-denier Robic nylon liner. The Beast18 also just happens to — at least, in our opinion — be one of the absolute best hiking and trail packs currently on the market. It’s also worth mentioning that the internal spring steel frame lends the impression that this is a regular, non-packable backpack, making its packable nature all the more impressive and noteworthy.

Matador Beast18 1

Sold with an included compression storage sack for travel, the Beast18 also features gear loops for hiking poles, ice axes, or tools, an adjustable sternum strap and removable hip belt, Hypalon-reinforced external daisy chain, oversized water bottle pockets, and EVA foam-padded breathable mesh shoulder straps and back panel — a setup that collectively makes for one of the most comfortable and supportive harness systems that we’ve ever tested. This packable hiking backpack also boasts an asymmetrical dual compartment design with a half clamshell zipper that opens to reveal a key loop and a pair of internal pockets.

Best Ultra-Tough/Rugged Pick: An insanely-hardwearing alpine pack that just happens to be fully packable, the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Summit Pack is a spartan affair, consisting of a large main compartment with a roll-top closure and a front face adorned in shock cord and four external daisy chains. Made from DCH150 (or DCH50 for the available white colorway) — an ultra-rugged woven Dyneema and polyester hybrid — this highly-durable pack is made all the more hardwearing via the addition of bar-tacked reinforcements on all stress points and a proprietary seam tape on all main body seams.

Hyperlite Summit Pack 1

The Summit Pack has also been bestowed with an Ultralight 3/4″ webbing hip belt, multiple grab loops, removable top vertical compression straps, minimalist shoulder straps with spacer mesh, and an adjustable sternum strap with an integrated whistle. Weighing less than one pound, this Dyneema-shelled daypack comes loaded with a generous 30-liters of storage space and an equally robust 20-pound carrying capacity — a figure that puts a great many packable backpacks to shame. If you’re simply looking for a no-nonsense packable bag with a spartan design — and some exterior features — than it really is hard to beat Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s Summit Pack.

Hyperlite Summit Pack 2

Capacity: 30L Primary Construction: DCH150 or DCH50 (Dyneema Composite) Weight: 0.82LBs (or 0.96LBs)

Micro Travel: How You Can Make the Most Out Of Your Weekend Getaway

As travellers, we often find ourselves eager to explore as much of a place as we can. We find ways to make sure that we’ve seen all the major sights and have wonderful stories to tell once we return home. What we often miss out on is a more intimate experience of a destination because we get so caught up in jumping from one fancy monument to the next!

As a generation that struggles with heavy work-schedules, looming deadlines and ever-increasing pressure, a vacation is the only respite we get. Sadly, vacation time is also so limited! How then do we find a way to get away from the tediousness of our daily existence? Micro-travel is the answer we’ve all been looking for.

What is micro travel?

Touted as one of the hottest travel trends of 2019, micro-travel is the greatest blessing a traveller could ask for. The concept essentially involves planning a short trip, preferably over the weekend, to a destination of choice based on your immediate needs.

micro travel

Every traveller forms a unique bond with the place they visit which is why your micro-travel experience should leave you with lasting memories despite its short time frame. What are the major factors you need to keep in mind before planning your ideal micro-trip? Here’s a list that will answer all your questions.

Choosing the ideal location

A weekend getaway should be all about what you want. Beach towns, hill stations, quaint villages, take your pick. You could also choose a location based on the kind of activity you want to do. Adventure sports, hiking/trekking, heritage locations are some of the few categories based on which you could choose your destination. Find a small town or city that you will actually enjoy being a part of.

Travel and accommodation

Remember the basics! Planning a mode of travel and choosing an ideal location to stay must be done well in advance. Since you’re most probably going to visit a destination that’s not too far from where you’re staying, decide how you’ll be travelling so there’s nothing to stress about last minute. Hotels, homestays and hostels are at your disposal, find a place that has all the amenities you require. Booking in advance is also easy on the pocket; you might end up saving quite a bit of cash!

Baggage check

Considering the short duration of your trip, keep your luggage to a minimal. Pack only the essentials; don’t go over-board carrying too many outfits. Plan your outfits based on what you want to do once you get there, always carry comfortable luggage that is easy to carry around. Heavy suitcases become too much of a nuisance. Backpacks are often the most convenient and are also extremely spacious.

Pick your travel buddies or fly solo

micro travel

Depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for, you can either decide to have a fun getaway with a group of your friends or explore a place all by yourself. If you’re choosing to go on a solo trip make sure you address all your safety concerns while choosing a place. If it’s a group of friends you want to hang out with then it’s crucial to find company whose interests align with yours. In the limited time that you have, there won’t be any room for itinerary clashes with your travel buddies!

Go with the flow

While planning is key in micro-travel, what’s also important is that you don’t get too caught up in the details. Once you have chosen your destination, you might pick out a few must-see sights or experiences that you want to witness, but apart from that, don’t allow yourself to be limited by what you ‘have’ to do. The short trip is a way for you to absorb the charm of a place while also finding a distraction from your daily routine. Don’t let the fear of missing out keep you from choosing to lounge by the beach for a few extra hours instead of running to the next sight.

Run out of things to do? Ask the locals!

micro travel

If you ever somehow manage to exhaust all that you’ve planned to do on your trip and are still looking to do/see new things, asking the locals is always a great idea. They are the most authentic source given the fact that they’re from the place; they might point you in the direction of some hidden gems you would have otherwise missed out. Sight-seeing, food recommendations, shopping, the locals know a little bit about everything!

Planning how you’ll get around

Once you reach your destination, travelling within the place is something that you need to figure out. The availability and frequency of public transportation differ from place to place and could be one of your options. Renting a bike, car or cycle are also convenient alternatives, most cities/towns have a host of rental stores for tourists. If you’re up for some exercise, the best way to explore a new place is on foot. Put on your running shoes and head out!

Best Travel Umbrella for Rainy Destinations

The best travel umbrella will do more than keep you dry. From rainy afternoons to long days exploring a new city in the sun, this list has you covered.

Best Travel Umbrella for Rainy Destinations | 9 Small Umbrellas

For trips as short as a weekend in a new city to months-long excursions across the globe, a travel umbrella is essential to staying dry, out of the wind, and safe from the sun’s harmful rays. Whether you fall on either end of that spectrum or somewhere in the middle, this post will help you find the best travel umbrella for you.

Most umbrellas are built with rain in mind, but some go further to protect the user from wind and UV rays. Depending on what you’re using it for and what you expect from a compact umbrella, you might opt for a model that excels at different things.

If you have fair skin and hate being wet, go for an umbrella with more coverage that has excellent UV protection. You might not focus on that if you don’t often go somewhere where the sun is harmful. If you only care about not getting wet, you might go with a durable model that won’t get a hole in it or turn inside out in a big gust of wind. Whatever your needs, there’s a travel umbrella out there for you, and we’re here to help you find it. Let’s dive in!

  • Montbell Travel Umbrella
  • Blunt Metro Umbrella
  • Repel Umbrella Original Umbrella
  • Amazon Basics Compact Umbrella
  • Davek Mini Umbrella
  • EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella
  • LifeTek Travel Umbrella
  • Balios Travel Umbrella
  • Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

Montbell Travel Umbrella Review

If weight is the most important thing for you in your quest to find the best travel umbrella, we have the pick for you. Not only is the Montbell Travel Umbrella extraordinarily lightweight, it’ll keep you dry in the rain, too.

It comes in at a meager 3 ounces, which won't weigh down your pack, sling , or hand. At the time of writing, it comes in Sunset Orange, Blue Black, and White colorways. They look outdoorsy, but the White option doesn't look out of place in an urban environment.

It isn't the most compact umbrella when packed down, but it'll work for most uses. Plus, the materials are still durable, so it will last you as long as you take good care of it. It feels flimsier than others we tested, but it operates as we'd hoped.

If you don't mind the outdoorsy look and want a model that won't weigh you down, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • It weighs just 3 ounces
  • The materials are durable enough for most uses
  • It’s small but long when packed down
  • It might not be the best choice for rugged adventures

Blunt Metro Umbrella

When it comes to umbrellas, there are three points to look at. How does it handle precipitation? Can it be used in the wind? And how well does it block UV rays from the sun? Luckily, with the Blunt Metro Travel Umbrella, you're covered in all three areas—literally.

At the time of writing, there are eight colorways to choose from, so you can find something that matches your style. The materials will stop rain, wind (within reason), and harmful UV rays that can harm your skin. The spine is crafted from aluminum, which is durable but remains lightweight.

The look isn't for everyone; however, considering this model will protect you from anything mother nature throws at you, it might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • Offers protection from rain, wind, and UV rays
  • One umbrella can cover most situations while traveling
  • The look isn’t for everyone
  • Not the smallest option on this list

Repel Umbrella Original Umbrella

If you're looking for the best small umbrella that is as unique as you are, look no further than The Original Repel Umbrella. It features colorway designs that go further than just your favorite colors, from Blue Sky to Rainbow and Starry Night. No matter where you end up, you'll have an umbrella that matches the vibes you bring to the table.

This isn't the lightest or most compact umbrella on the market, but it can fit inside your travel backpack or daypack . Plus, it's a reminder that daily essentials don't have to be bland.

The button makes it easy to open and close again, so trips into and out of the rain are a breeze. The canopy has a Teflon coating, ensuring you stay dry and the top doesn't leak. Whether you're looking for something vibrant for your daily excursions or something unique to set you apart in an unfamiliar city, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • Comes in multiple patterns and designs in addition to solid colors
  • Simple design is easy to use
  • It isn’t very lightweight
  • Canopy doesn’t feel very durable

Amazon Basics Compact Umbrella

I bet you wondered when you'd see an Amazon product on this list. In the modern era, it's hard to escape Amazon Basics gear, and your search for a travel umbrella has likely landed you on their page, wondering whether or not it can be any good for the price. Luckily for you, we're here to say that it is!

The design has a wind vent to prevent the interior from flipping outward in heavy winds, yet it keeps you dry in a torrential downpour. The Amazon Basics Travel Umbrella is a great shout, no matter the weather.

The build quality isn't the best we've seen; however, it's hard to beat for the price. At the time of writing, this umbrella comes in at under $20. For how well it performs, we think it's a solid option in your search for the best travel umbrella for your next trip!

  • The wind vent helps ensure it doesn’t flip inside out
  • It comes at a budget-friendly price
  • The build quality isn’t the best
  • Not many colorway options

Davek Mini Umbrella

If you're looking for a small umbrella that fits into the palm of your hand, look no further than the Davek Mini. It isn't the lightest model we've tested; however, there isn't much to complain about at eight ounces.

When closed, it's around seven inches long. Yup, just over a half foot! At the time of writing, there are ten colorway options, so you can snag one that matches your travel gear. The logo is relatively large compared to the size of the umbrella, but we don't mind that much. How often are you showing off your travel umbrella?

Size isn't everything, but the Davek Mini keeps you dry from precipitation, which is what matters. It doesn't excel in use for two people, but you'll both have your heads covered! Be sure to pack a rain jacket if that’s how you plan to use it. For those looking for a just-in-case model that does the job without taking up much room, the Davek Mini might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • It fits into the palm of your hand when compressed
  • Has good coverage for such a small umbrella
  • Won’t work well for two people
  • The loop on the handle doesn’t feel very durable

EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella

We've got you covered if you're looking for a compact budget umbrella that comes in various colorway options. The EEZ-Y Windproof Travel Umbrella is around $15, has 14 colorways available, and has Amazon Prime shipping (at least at the time of writing)!

The design utilizes a two-tiered canopy (some might call it a slit) to ensure the wind doesn't turn the umbrella inside out, but it keeps you dry in the process. The shaft is fiberglass, which is typically more durable than aluminum but is heavier. The canopy material doesn't feel as stable as others we've tested, but it's holding up strong.

Considering the price point, colorway options available, and durability of the spine, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • The button open and closure is snappy and quick
  • Budget-friendly price point
  • Materials aren’t the highest quality
  • It feels cheap while using it

LifeTek Travel Umbrella

There's something appealing about a simple umbrella without any frills—a model that simply gets the job done. Right? The LifeTek Windproof Travel Umbrella checks that box and has a wide width, which we dig. What else can you ask for?

The Teflon-coated canopy does the heavy lifting as far as precipitation is concerned. The opening and closing mechanism is made of hardy fiberglass, lightweight aluminum, and versatile resin for a smooth process. The button is easy to click, making using this compact umbrella quick and stress-free.

There are 42 and 45-inch canopies available, which are wide enough for two people to stay mostly dry, but be prepared to get snug together. If you want a simple model to complete the job, this might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • Has a Teflon coating for water protection
  • Does well in windy conditions
  • It can be difficult to close
  • Getting the cover back on takes some learning

Balios Travel Umbrella

Many budget-friendly umbrellas have handles that are subpar. The mechanism is sound, but carrying it for extended periods can be uncomfortable. Enter the Balios Travel Folding Umbrella!

Materials are top dog here. The handle is made of wood and feels comfortable to hold onto, even for an extended period. The shaft is crafted from steel, which is more durable than fiberglass or aluminum. The case has a zipper, which makes it easier to open and close than those without an opening.

All those materials considered, this compact umbrella is heavier than most on this list. However, it's still a good size for travel and will fit inside most packs without much fuss. If you want premium materials and are okay with the weight, this model from Balios might be the best travel umbrella for you!

  • The handle feels and looks premium
  • It’s wide enough for two people to use
  • It’s on the larger side of travel umbrellas
  • Wood might not last as long as some synthetic materials

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

A budget-friendly compact umbrella is ideal for trips that might get rugged or that you'll need to bring many things home. If you lose it, you won't be bummed; if it makes it back, it's a bonus. The Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella fits the bill and works wonderfully in the interim.

There are nine colorways available at the time of writing, so you can get one that matches your vibe. The handle is made of rubber, which is comfortable to hold onto.

The umbrella handles well in wind and rain, which is the most important thing. The materials aren't the most durable, but we haven't had any issues with them failing so far! If you want a basic option that won't break the bank, this might be the best umbrella for you!

  • Budget-friendly pricing
  • Numerous colorways available
  • Might not last long on rugged adventures
  • Colorways aren’t always spot-on with images online

So there you have it; some of the best travel umbrella models on the market. Whether going to a city or on a rugged adventure, hopefully, you’ve found an umbrella that’ll keep you dry on your journey!

The R&E Bicycles 6-Pack Micro Bike Fits into a 20″ x 20″ Suitcase

Being what some may call an “industry veteran” and being obsessed with bicycles since I was 5 years old, doesn’t mean that I don’t learn something new every, single day. Take, for instance, one of the exhibitors at the MADE Bike Show, R&E Bicycles.

I was admiring the R&E Bicycles 6-Pack micro bike that their Master Mechanic, Alder Threlkeld was talking to me about. Then, assuming because I’d never heard of them that they were a new-ish bike company, I asked “How long has R&E been around”… Alder proudly responded, “Since 1973”.

“Wow”, I responded. I felt schooled… and ya know, it happens way more than I care to admit. But, as I mentioned, I learn something new every single day.

Anywho, 50 years is a long time for an independent bike company to be around. They must be doing something right and must have a niche market’s attention. They are doing something right, and they do have a niche market’s trust.

Quick R&E Bicycle History

R&E Bicycles 6-Pack touring bike 1973

Rodriguez Bicycles was established in 1973 by Angel Rodriguez and Glenn Erickson. Angel and Glenn started building bicycles and tandems using their own names and quickly became a well-respected shop in the Seattle area.

In 1990, Angel sold the company to an entity that wasn’t from the bike industry and eventually drove R&E Bicycles to bankruptcy by 1993. In ’93, Angel had actually financed the deal with the new owners and was able to buy back R&E Bicycles with the help of Dan Towle. Dan and a small team worked hard from then until 1999 rebuilding the company.

By the end of the 90s, R&E Bicycles had a full line of US-made production bicycles to add to their extensive custom line-up…just in time for the dot-com explosion.

Over the last few decades, with hard work and perseverance through some dark times, Dan and the team at R&E Bicycle Company remain a Seattle cycling institution.

The R&E 6-Pack Micro Bike

The 6-Pack Micro is hailed (by R&E Bicycles) as the smallest packable touring bike available.

R&E says that the packing ability, ease of breakdown, and re-assembly were all crucial to the design of this bicycle. This is not a folding bike, but is a bike that, by the use of S&S couplings, allows for the bike to be fully dismantled and packed into very small spaces… like a suitcase that is only 20″ x 20″ in size.

R&E Bicycles 6-Pack eccentric bb

The 6-Pack is custom-built to your size. It is built with a front triangle and a rear triangle, like a full-sized touring bicycle. Therefore, it’s said to ride just as solid as any full-sized touring bicycle.

R&E Bicycles 6-Pack broken down

The 6-Pack’s ability to break down and pack up was important, but so was the ride characteristic. It needed to perform well enough for it to be the customer’s everyday bike.

How to get your Own R&E Bicycles 6-Pack

The R&E Bicycle’s 6-Pack is a micro-travel bike that is said to ride and perform as well as a traditionally sized bicycle. It is a completely custom-made bicycle, with geometry built just for you.

“ The Rodriguez 6-Pack™ comes in just one size:  Your Size . The 6-Pack™ are custom-sized and built to order for each rider. We can design the fit around your favorite touring bike, or start from scratch with our  NEXT-fit™  system to ensure comfort. I want to know about those brakes!

I learned about those brakes on their website! Pretty cool stuff

Ashok Captain

Slam that stem (K I D D I N G)! Cool (and expensive) concept, but one pays for custom. Sensible choice of brakes for a non-warp speed machine. Glad to see some custom (‘metal’) builders staying afloat in the dark age of carbon. Cheers.

Dave

A beautiful and no doubt well designed bike, but at seven grand, I could have a half decent touring bike bought and delivered to my next five vacations and just leave it behind when I go home.

I would love to own this bike but if I had enough money to buy it I wouldn’t need it.
