22 of my family members booked through Costa Rican vacations and we had a blast! We had an adorable sloth sleeping in a tree near our balcony, we saw several monkeys (2 who jumped on our balcony), beautiful macaws and parrots! The 2 resorts (Arenal Kioro and Telemar) we stayed at were both amazing,comfortable and beyond my expectations. All of the excursions (ziplining, waterfall hike, chocolate plantation, catamaran cruise, and ATVing) were fun and worth our time. Having a scheduled itinerary was the best. Lisa, our travel agent, was very accommodating and nice. She really cared about our needs. I will definitely recommend Costa Rican vacations in the future!

Lisa planned our trip for our group of 22. She did an amazing job! We stayed in two beautiful hotels. We got to zip line, experience a tour of the rain forest, go on a chocolate tour, a catamaran and so much more! We saw sloths, monkeys, toucans and many iguanas. Great customer service with good transparency.

We're looking at visiting Costa Rica for the first time and my wife saw a link to Costa Rican Vacations and messaged them. Within a few hours, we'd already had a call (to the UK) from Emilie Witham, who quickly understood what we wanted and came up with a package. We were keen to visit the Osa Peninsula and she found and held a Lodge for us to consider for 24 hours, as well as coming up with a suggested itinerary for the remainder of our trip. We then went back with several modifications, which she kindly acted on. When I queried the price, she provided a complete breakdown that showed the great value of the trip. Outstanding service and very responsive... Thank you!

I usually do all of my family’s travel planning myself, but when we decided on Costa Rica, I felt overwhelmed. I did a simple Google search on Costa Rica travel agents, and I landed on Costa Rica Vacations (Namu Travel). It was an absolutely perfect vacation! We loved everything about it, and Sebastian and his team took care of every detail. My daughter is gluten-free, and every excursion had an alternative lunch for her and the resort went above and beyond. I will never attempt CR on my own - Sebastian will always get my business!

Stress Free Honeymoon

WOW! We just returned from our dream honeymoon vacation, and I can't say enough great things about this company. Shelly Huff was our agent. She made our trip easy and stress-free. After adventuring into the rainforest, crossing hanging bridges, and swimming at La Fortuna waterfall, we enjoyed the beautiful views of Arenal from our private bungalow at Los Del Volcan. We then went to the beach. We enjoyed swimming in the refreshing waters at Playa Conchal, where we had a beautiful sunset catamaran tour, where they popped champagne to help us celebrate our honeymoon!

The company took care of everything

The company took care of everything, from rooms, to shuttles, transfers, booking excursions. It was as turnkey as a vacation can get. Everything was documented and easy to follow, and taken care of. We communicated throughout the trip with Costa Rica vacations for recommendations, and any and every question. A 5 minute response was always there. One tiny hiccup that in my opinion turned into Costa Rican Vacations biggest win was we had an 3 hr drive with a bad air conditioner in a van. We messaged CR Vacations 10 min in and they immediately got another van sent to us while we were driving (within an hr to catch up) and paid for our lunch as well to cover the inconvenience. This above and beyond service after they already had nothing to gain except for a happy customer, shows they never stopped taking care of us on our trip/.

Best experience with a travel agency…

Best experience with a travel agency yet! Sebastian was super responsive, and had my itinerary ready in just a couple short hours. The most detailed one I’ve seen and so very appreciated! Once on vacation all our pickups were right on time and everything fell in line with what we expected from itinerary. People in Costa Rica were so nice and the nature and landscape was breathtaking. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Travel Team

The support & service I received from everyone was tremendous, especially my primary travel rep, Molly Stevens. No matter how many questions I asked, and there were quite a lot, Molly responded in a timely and patient manner. She always made me feel comfortable. The team made and coordinated airline, ground transfers, hotel, excursions and restaurant reservations without a hitch. I prefer better/high end properties and can be quite critical. Molly and team came through big time! I would definitely use them again.

My return to Costa Rica

This was my second vacation in Costa Rica, both wonderfully planned by Felicia Clarke. Again, everything was perfect, hotels, transfers, trips. This time from San Jose to Limon, Puerto Viejo, back to San Jose and the Pacific side at the Villa Caletas with the great Catamaran trip to Tortuga Island. incredible experience

Costa Rican Vacations did an incredible job putting together our trip. We are a family of 5 and Rachel Peck worked with our budget and booked us into comfortable, family friendly resorts. The staff was incredibly responsive on WhatsApp when I had questions during our vacation. Every transfer and ride was punctual. Vans were clean and drivers very safe. Great trip! Our Hawaii vacation got cancelled at the last minute due to various Covid restrictions, so we reached out to Tara since she had been a huge help planning our honeymoon years ago. In ~24 hours, she had us booked for a Costa Rica vacation! The accommodations were excellent and the transfers always on time. What a great getaway!

Our vacation was perfect!

Our vacation could not have been any more perfect. Felix was very patient as we customized the places and excursions and prices we wanted. Every detail was covered. Drivers were all delightful, friendly, safe, and helped us understand more about Costa Rica. Lodgings and food exceeded our expectations, and were reasonably priced. Costa Rica is a beautiful country--wish we could have seen more. We loved Casa Luna for its beauty and its food and its view of Arenal. We loved the waterfall hike and the local ("typical") food. Zip-lining at 600 feet up was awesome. We saw monkeys, crocodiles, geckos, toucans, and iguanas. Three perfect sunsets. Thank you for a wonderful trip!

Amazing experience booking through this company!! Our travel agent, Sam Goodman, promptly answered all of my questions via email (and I had LOTS of questions) and helped me to book the vacation of my dreams. I stayed in 3 different cities, and the accommodations in each were breathtaking. Sam helped us book zip lining, jungle hikes, National Park tours, and whitewater rafting. All of the companies picked us up at our hotels and the transfers were on time and seamless. Bravo Costa Rican Vacations and Sam Goodman!

CRV is a great choice for a first trip to Costa Rica

Really enjoyed everything that CRV did with us. We had less than 2 months to plan our trip during CR's busy season.The itinerary CRV planned was what we wanted -- several days each in a cloud forest, at a Pacfic Coast beach, and near the Arena volcano, with opportunities to see wildlife at each. Each driver we had was excellent -- safe, knowledgeable, English-speaking, in a spotless van, and with snacks. The accomodations were great and appropriately priced. When we had local guides they were terrific, too. I really recommend CRV to people going to CR for the first time.

We had a great trip

We had a great trip. All the drivers showed up on time and were friendly. The staff and atmosphere at Rafiki Jungle Lodge were just what we were looking for in our getaway. We loved all three excursions in Rafiki - the guides were so friendly and knowledgeable. And Manuel Antonio park exceeded our expectations. Si Como No provided a beautiful view and several excellent restaurants were a short walk away.

The trip was amazing and stress free

The trip was amazing and stress free. We did not have to worry about anything. Costa Rican vacations took care of all of the planning and the communication was on point. We customized the trip based on what we wanted to do. Sebastian offered several different hotels and things to do, along with his favorite restaurants. They even scheduled a romantic dinner for us one night that was fantastic. They provided all of the info needed for COVID paperwork and answered the questions we had. The service was beyond our expectations while in Costa Rica. We are already planning our next trip!

This is the company you want to book your vacation! Dyonne Burger was our rep. and she did a fantastic job. She patiently worked with us via phone and email to meet our requests. Alexandra helped me and my partner plan a 9 day vacation between the beach and the volcano area. She helped accommodate my partners’ desire for a small romantic boutique hotel and my desire for a spa resort with hot springs. We were both very happy with how professional, warm and intuitive Alexandra and her team were. From the various excursions with the bilingual guides, ground transportation, to the amazing food and that they were on call. The sunset dinner sail was absolutely amazing. We absolutely adored that she arranged for the medical staff to come to our resort to do the COVID test in between our excursions. We have already recommended her to other family and friends and will definitely use again when we return for an anniversary trip in a couple years.

From begining to end our trip was fabulous! Sebastian planned every detail and answered each question I had with confidence and kindness, constantly reassuring me that no matter what was happening in the world and with C-V-D that we would be taken care of and that absolutely happened. When our trip got closer the experience team nailed every change with amazing attention to detail. We ziplined with a great group of locals who entertained me and my kids despite the rain. We went horseback riding and hiking and had a variety of experience from first time to horse owner and had a blast. We went sportfishing and had a great day! We went on the Ocean King and had the time of our lives. Our drivers were on time, accommodating and gave an amazing detailed history of Costa Rica and shined with pride for their country. Vanessa Nichols of Costa Rican Vacations put together a great getaway for us in Costa Rica. She got all of our rooms upgraded to fabulous views. We particularly enjoyed the Parador Hotel in Manuel Antonio. It was first class all the way and the employees went out of their way to make our stay special. We also saw more animals on the property than we did at Manuel Antonio Park. They have a monkey trail onsite where we saw howler monkeys, white faced monkeys and sloths. We also saw lots of reptiles and beautiful birds. Vanessa also did a great job of lining us up a last minute ATV tour which was a blast! We spent the last portion of our trip near Arenal Volcano and had beautiful views of the volcano from our room. We spent a day at Sky Adventures with hanging bridges, the gondola, and zip lining in the rain forest! We did not rent a car and all transportation was provided. All drivers showed up on time, were professional and timed our trips according to our needs! If you want a relaxing (and fun) vacation where you don't need to worry about a thing - let Vanessa plan it for you! Pura Vida!

At the last minute, we changed our Europe trip to Costa Rica. Got a hold of Megan with Costa Rica Vacations. Great move on our part. She recommended the best area to fit our needs (Tamarindo), best possible hotels (Jarden Eden and Tamarindo Diria and tours. Megan set up our travel arrangements with great prices. The thing that totally impressed me was the timeliness of all the transfers. The tour buses, connections to and from the airport were all right on time and location. One of the tours was delayed by a half hour and we received a call from a rep personally telling us of the change. The hotels were as advertised and incredible. Megan even recommended the absolute best beachside restaurant, and it was fabulous (Pangas Beach Club). This is our second experience with Costa Rican Vacations and couldn't be happier.

Our Commitment

In 2014, we started our own non-profit, Tacos4Ticos.org, which translates to "soccer shoes for Costa Ricans". We collect and distribute used soccer gear to underprivileged youth leagues and schools throughout Costa Rica. We also began a partnership 3 years ago with a San Francisco based non-profit, Give a Day Global. Their mission is to "empower travelers to make a difference, to support communities creating change, and to connect people as global citizens, one day at a time." Working with co-founder (and Brownell Travel Advisor) Courtney Regan, we establish volunteer opportunities for travelers to Costa Rica and Panama. Our "voluntourism" experiences range from helping local schools to reforestation projects. We create many of these experiences independently, but also partner with sustainability-minded partners in the region. Sustainable travel is a growing part of our corporate culture. Fortunately, it is also of growing interest to our clientele.

Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City

“ You’re going to Russia?!?! Why? ” I heard these words pretty much every time I announced my upcoming trip to the east.

This reaction is understandable. Most people in Europe and the United States have a Putin-provoked distaste of the Russian Federation, which is growing by the day. Politicians claim that Russia’s sole mission is to diminish and undermine western powers to strengthen its own. After all, the name Vladimir comes from two old Slavic words, which together mean “great ruler of the world.” Make of that what you will…

Even the non-political vision of Russia is unfavorable. Most think of a cold, grey, backward place with Soviet architecture or battle-hardened, weather-beaten people. However, arriving at the sleek Moscow Domodedovo airport, I was impressed. I had been right to rebut popular notions of an unwelcoming and stony place.

However, almost immediately after leaving the airport, the ground for my righteous vindication became shaky. Driving into the outskirts of Moscow, my mind drew comparisons to television images of North Korean suburbs. Miles of uniform houses and bleak tower blocks lined the roads.

At the Izmailovov Delta Hotel next to the famous market of the same name, things were not looking much better. Truly peculiar decorations and violently colored walls competed for one’s gaze in the hotel lobby. Luckily, the rooms themselves were perfectly comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. I’d stay central next time.

After dropping bags, I ventured toward the Izmailovov market for a look at how the locals live. From a distance, the buildings that encase the market are vivid, intricate and quite something to behold. As it was late in the day, the market was empty. Shop shutters were closed and stalls were folded up. I got the same uneasy feeling I get when walking through Disney Land – as if this was what remained after the recent collapse of a utopian society.

While nearly all the vendors had packed up and gone home, a few stalls remained opened for business. All that was left was an abundance of satirical matryoshka dolls containing various countries’ political leaders in historical order.

A tattooed burly salesman came over to me as I withdrew François Mitterrand from the wooden bowels of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

“ Where are you from, friend? ” He asked.

Ignoring my response, he launched into a speech about his armed forces days and the political situation in Russia.

“ You really ought not to trust the government, ok? Putin is a dangerous man, you see. Someone’s always watching in this city. ”

The whiff of Glühwein that carried with each sentence made me doubt the erudition of his analysis. Then again… this is what we hear in the news. I was not sure what to believe. After thanking the man and hastily filling Charles de Gaulle with the rest of the presidents of the Fifth Republic, I made my way back to the hotel.

Emerging from the underground we rounded the corner and immediately found ourselves in Red Square. The sight demands you stop and stare.

The insurmountable walls of the Kremlin line the length of one side; halfway along lies Lenin’s tomb and opposite is the lavish exterior of the Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin shopping center (or GUM, as it’s referred to, thank God). The architectural marvel of Saint Basil’s Cathedral stands at the south end, with the State History Museum at the other. Even though the foreboding structures radiate a rouge pastel hue into every corner of the square, there is a sense of openness. No-doubt there was a somewhat different atmosphere when thousands of Soviet soldiers goose-stepped through the square. Interestingly, the Russian army still marches like this today.

Walking around central Moscow, history oozes from every spire and pillar. Buildings seem to lean over as you walk past, as if peering down on whoever dares to enter these austere places. For every moment or event in Russian history, there is a dedicated museum.

The quality of each museum is notably high. In particular, the Armory inside the Kremlin holds astonishing collections of royal carriages from across the world and throughout the ages. The world-renowned Fabergé Eggs are displayed here too.

Having wandered around for so long during the day, we had no time to eat before attending the Ballet that evening. Sitting in the Bolshoi, the long day began to catch up with me.

It is now that I must make a confession: while attending a performance by one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, I fell asleep.

Thankfully, I woke up later in the second half and was treated to the final leaps and prances of Shostakovich’s The Bright Stream. As someone who is not a ballet aficionado, that was probably enough.

Feeling significantly perkier afterward, a late dinner was in order. Just behind the Bolshoi is VOGUE Café , a gastronomic outpost of the famous magazine. It claimed to serve an eclectic mix of Japanese, Italian and Russian dishes. Intrigued, we entered.

Adventurously, we accepted the offer of some Russian wine. Full bodied and berried, it was delicious. Our evident surprise led the waitress to explain that Russian food and drink has improved hugely over the last few years. As it turns out, since the United States and the European Union placed sanctions on Russia after their annexation of Crimea, food imports have been scarce. As a result, Russian producers have been forced to meet the demand and quality expected today. As a result, Siberian wines and cheeses now win awards around the globe.

When we left the restaurant, it was late. Only a day had passed, yet we had filled every minute with history, culture and food. The next three days followed a similar format and we continued to make our way down the list of museums and sights. A boat ride along the river is a must-do for alternative views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Afterwards, sit on the rooftop Strelka bar opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and watch the 3-mile-long line of pilgrims move slowly forward.

On the third day, we were due to board an overnight train to Saint Petersburg, but there was still so much left to do. Truth be told, it was probably too much for another three days, let alone one.

Nonetheless, I was satisfied. Moscow had revealed itself to be a fascinating and impressive city. While the city infrastructure isn’t as up-to-date as most capitals, the needs of every modern traveler can be met. It certainly isn’t the cold and unfriendly place envisioned by most in the west. Moscow’s winning attribute is its omnipresent sense of untouched history. This is a feature that is so often lost amongst hordes of tourists in Europe’s capitals.

It goes to show: what we hear about places we haven’t been in the news or through general hearsay, we can formulate pretty strong prejudices in our mind. While the political realities may still be ugly, by visiting, you can learn to separate and appreciate the everyday, the culture and the history of a place. On one side of a great red wall in central Moscow, a tyrannical leader works. On the other side, wholly separated, lies a magnificent Red Square where an overwhelming sense of history reveals the essence of Moscow and of Russia. And it is truly remarkable.

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
