After three decades as a stand-up comedian, Nancy Norton finally found the spotlight last year when she became the first woman to win the Boston Comedy Festival. With a new album ( Born 4th of 3 ) out this month, the 59-year-old Lafayette resident recently dissected one of the bits that helped her win the prestigious contest—because while explaining a joke might be a drag, it’s also pretty illuminating.

I got out of nursing for the same reason a lot of people get into it…to save lives. “I was a hospice nurse until I was 27. I asked people who were dying, How are you so at peace? They would tell me, Oh honey, I got to live my dream —whatever that was. For me, that was stand-up comedy. At the time, I was living in Honolulu. This new club had opened, and they were holding tryouts. I was like, OK, you have to do this . It was the best two minutes of my life, and they hired me right on the spot.”

I was not meant to be a nurse. It’s all about “them.” MY arm is broken, MY chest is hurting, MY cervix is dilating! Me. Me. Me. Me. Me! And that’s just the doctors. “This is going to be a name drop, but Tig Notaro gave me this tag line. (I like to remind people that she used to open for me.) I love that line. I’m big on collaboration with my peers. When I started I wanted it all to be something I came up with, but that’s not how good comedy works. You sometimes get lines from other people. It helps a joke evolve.”

I come from five generations of nurses, or as I like to call us: co-dependents. My mom never told me to be a nurse. She tricked me. Through gifts and toys. She brought home leftover gauze, syringes, and needles. Other girls got dolls that wet or dolls that cried. I got a doll that choked and then she died. Her name was Resusci Annie. Chicken bone sold separately.

It was a lot of stress trying to save that doll. “This is typically where I pretend to drag half a doll out from under the Christmas tree. I feel like my material is delivery-dependent. I’m very demonstrative. When I first started, I would spend hours trying to get a bit down to the right amount of syllables. I realized I was better when I just threw my energy at the back wall.”

If you didn’t act quickly, she would start drifting toward that little dolly white light. Turns out it’s the light from the Easy Bake Oven. Heaven is full of cakes! “The Easy Bake Oven thing comes up a lot in my comedy. I did a competition recently in Rapid City, South Dakota, and the buzz was some woman did an entire set about an Easy Bake Oven. (It was me.) When I write, I find it’s better to let myself gooooo, baby. I don’t know if I think about structure a ton, but I know my ego needs a laugh every 30 seconds.”

Korda wins 4th straight LPGA Tour start, beating Maguire in T-Mobile Match Play

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Nelly Korda is on a roll not seen on the LPGA Tour in 16 years.

She won four of the first seven holes, largely making the rest of the final Sunday in the T-Mobile Match Play a formality in beating Leona Maguire 4 and 3 at Shadow Creek.

Lorena Ochoa in 2008 was the last player to win four consecutive starts. Korda, the world’s top-ranked player, will try to tie the record of five — set by Nancy Lopez in 1978 and matched by Annika Sorenstam in 2004-05 — in two weeks at the season’s first major, The Chevron Championship outside Houston.

Because Korda took seven weeks off after winning in January in her hometown of Bradenton, Florida, this victory was her third straight in a scheduled event. Four players share the record of four in a row, with Mickey Wright doing it twice.

Korda also became the first American since Kathy Whitworth in 1969 to win four of her first five starts in a season.

“I can’t even wrap my head around it,” Korda said “Such a whirlwind of the last three weeks. I just feel like I was just in go-mode constantly.”

This was the first head-to-head match-play singles event between Korda and Maguire, but they have experience against each other in similar settings at the Solheim Cup. The Irish player is 3-1 while representing Europe in team match-play events against Korda.

Korda birdied Nos. 5-7 for a 4-up lead. She was 5 up after 12, saw Maguire take 13 and 14 with pars, and ended the match with a par win on the par-4 15th.

“It’s always nice to get a lead, kind of like a cushion,” Korda said. “But it’s Leona. She’s such a fiery competitor. I knew when I lost those two holes in a row, 13 and 14, that I really needed to put my foot down to finish the match off.”

Korda earned $300,000 for her 12th career victory.

“You know you’re going to have to make birdies if you want to beat her,” Maguire said. “Unfortunately, I didn’t make enough today. Hats off to her. She is an incredible player and she is playing some great golf right now. All I could do is play my own game, and that wasn’t good enough today.”

This tournament was entirely match play the first three years and played in late May when temperatures often are in the high 90s. Many of the top players opted not to compete.

The format changed this year to three days of stroke play, with the top eight advancing to match play on the weekend. The event also moved back to early April, when temperatures are much more moderate, which helped attract its strongest field.

It’s a field that Maguire dominated during stroke play, ending the first three rounds at 6-under par, three strokes better than anyone else.

“It almost felt like two separate tournaments this week, the stroke-play event and the match-play event,” Maguire said. “To lead the stroke play around this golf course by three at the end of the three days was something I can take a lot of positives from and be very proud of.”

Korda had to fight just to get into the match play. She shot 73 each of the first two rounds, but then came through with a 69 on Wednesday to advance to the weekend.

Then she didn’t let the opportunity go to waste at one of the more demanding courses on the tour.

“It’s absolutely breathtaking, such an amazing, amazing golf course,” Korda said. “It is brutal, though. It has tested every part of my game. I think golf courses like that are so much fun play. They’re so frustrating where you’re just like you walk off the hole and you’re just so frustrated there are a couple swear words going through your head.”

Pocan, McGovern, Schakowsky Urge Biden, Blinken to Withhold Weapons Transfers After Humanitarian Aid Workers Killed

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representatives Mark Pocan (WI-02), Jim McGovern (MA-02), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) and 37 of their colleagues sent a letter to President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken asking them to withhold pending offensive weapons transfers to Israel after seven humanitarian aid workers from World Central Kitchen, including one American, were killed in an Israeli airstrike, and to place conditions on future weapons assistance.

“We write to express our shared concern and outrage regarding the recent Israeli airstrike which killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers, including an American citizen,” the Members wrote. “In light of this incident, we strongly urge you to reconsider your recent decision to authorize the transfer of a new arms package to Israel and to withhold this and any future offensive arms transfers until a full investigation into the airstrike is completed. If this strike is found to have violated U.S. or international law, we urge you to continue withholding these transfers until those responsible are held accountable. We also urge you to withhold these transfers if Israel fails to sufficiently mitigate harm to innocent civilians in Gaza, including aid workers, and if it fails to facilitate – or arbitrarily denies or restricts – the transport and delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.”

“It is estimated that over 32,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of this war, nearly half of whom are children,” the Members continued. “While we appreciate your administration’s recent efforts to increase the delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid to Gaza, these efforts will not be sufficient to meet the extraordinary need on the ground. The Israeli government’s restrictions on the flow of aid into Gaza, coupled with the death and grave harm that aid workers have faced during this war, are compounding this hunger crisis. Recent reports indicate that hundreds of aid trucks sit idle outside the Rafah border crossing due to Israel’s restrictions. And now over 200 aid workers have been killed since the start of the war. These attacks and deaths are having a chilling effect with the World Central Kitchen and other humanitarian groups now suspending their operations in Gaza. Until now, World Central Kitchen has provided more than 43 million meals to Palestinians in Gaza, lending support to 68 community kitchens throughout the territory and serving more than 170,000 hot meals each day. Its services are irreplaceable, and its absence will fuel the growing hunger crisis in Gaza.”

“In light of the recent strike against aid workers and the ever-worsening humanitarian crisis, we believe it is unjustifiable to approve these weapons transfers,” the Members concluded. “We again strongly urge you to withhold any offensive weapons transfers until the investigation into the airstrike is concluded and, if it is found this strike violated U.S. or international law, those responsible are held accountable. And we again urge you to ensure that any future military assistance to Israel, including already authorized transfers, is subject to conditions to ensure it is used in compliance with U.S. and international law.”
