20 Things You Must Do in North Georgia
TO CELEBRATE THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY of our magazine, we flipped through thousands of our past pages to come up with top 20 things you simply must do in North Georgia. This is no easy feat, mind you. There are so many amazing sites, cities, museums, hikes, waterfalls, galleries, attractions and experiences to enjoy, and narrowing it down to our favorites was as challenging as hiking up Brasstown Bald in your bare feet! We hope you enjoy exploring these gems in North Georgia. It might take you a year, or two or three to explore all of them but don’t worry you’ll never run out of fun things to do in North Georgia. We can always come up with more!
1. TREK THE CANYON
North Georgia is blessed with many amazing parks but we have one particular favorite—Cloudland Canyon State Park. Cloudland Canyon in Rising Fawn is located on the western end of Lookout Mountain in Dade County and is without a doubt one of the largest and most awe-inspiring parks in Georgia. Here the scenic Sitton’s Gulch Creek cuts a deep gorge into the
mountain, offering breathtaking views, with thousand-foot deep canyons, sandstone cliffs, wild caves, abundant wildlife and picturesque waterfalls. And if you are feeling adventurous, consider joining the park’s Canyon Climbers Club and get more than a little dirt on your shoes. Want more canyon exploration? Head south to Providence Canyon State Park in Stewart County. Known as Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon,” the canyon
boasts a vista painted in pink, red, purple and orange, creating a magnificent day of exploration. (Learn more about our beautiful state parks in our Fall Color Travel Planner .)
2. HIKE THE TRAIL
There are thousands of miles of trails in North Georgia, but none are as famous and nationally beloved at the Appalachian Trail, which starts at Springer Mountain in Georgia and treks more than 2,000 miles through 14 states all the way to Maine. On the Springer summit, a bronze plaque celebrates the trail’s beginning and a vault holds a beloved trail log where hikers scribble down their thoughts about the long journey ahead. But you don’t have to hike all the way to Maine to enjoy the trail. Fall in the Southern Appalachians is reward enough and wildlife frequents the area, from wild turkeys, songbirds and deer, to an occasional black bear or wild hog. Wildflowers, rhododendron and mountain laurel as well as towering pines and hardwoods make this an adventure that will restore your soul. We recommend the 1.9-mile round trip Three Forks to Long Creek Falls trail that will take you to of the area’s most beautiful waterfalls, or the 2-mile round trip Springer Mountain Trail, which is a short yet challenging hike to the trail’s end at Springer Mountain.
3. AMBLE THROUGH ORCHARDS AND FARMS
Whether you are in the mood for apple picking, tractor tours, you-pick gardens or a delicious tasting room, orchards abound all over North Georgia. Some of our personal favorites include Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge, known for its apples, strawberries, bakery and hard cider; Jaemor Farms in Alto, known for its amazing farm market, pumpkin patch and corn maze; B.J. Reece Orchard in Ellijay, known for apples and peaches; and Hillcrest Orchards in Ellijay, which is known for its Apple Pickin’ Jubilee in September through October. The ShieldsEthridge Farm in Jefferson is an outdoor agricultural museum that offers educational and interpretative learning about life on the farm among the intact historical buildings that still stand on their original location.
4. SAVOR A VIEW TO REMEMBER
Some views are pretty, for sure, but some views will simply take your breath away. You definitely will be catching your breath when you visit Bell Mountain Park and Historical Site, which is actually only a few years old, but may just offer some of the best panoramic views in Georgia. Located in Hiawassee, the 18 acres of land was donated by the Hal Herrin Estate in 2016 and, at an elevation of 3,424 feet, offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic of Lake Chatuge and surrounding mountains. The park, which has become a popular place for hang gliders, has added a viewing platform to ensure the best views. Just be aware, it is also the location of graffitied rocks, which is a dash of local color or an eyesore, depending on who you ask. But no worries, the view is still spectacular. For another fantastic view, head to Brasstown Bald on the border of Towns and Union counties, to marvel at the highest point Georgia at 4,784 feet above sea level.
5. ALL ABOARD FOR SCENIC SITES
If you are looking for a nostalgic journey through North Georgia, then grab your ticket for the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Fannin County. Your journey starts in the thriving town of Blue Ridge, which is a shopping and dining mecca in and of itself, and takes guests on a four-hour, 26-mile roundtrip journey along the Toccoa River through the picturesque North Georgia countryside headed to the charming sister towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. Here you have two hours to explore the towns before your hour-long return to the Blue Ridge depot. And in fall, it’s an especially good way to see tree colors changing.
6. Follow the Wine Highway
North Georgia is home to more than 25 wineries that are constantly offering new and creative blends and varietals. While is impossible to pick our personal favorite, we can at least highlight the most award-winning. Tiger Mountain Vineyards in Tiger produces red and white wines from 100-percent Georgia-grown grapes in Rabun County. Three Sisters Vineyards and Winery in Dahlonega boasts not only an amazing view of the mountains but also 10,000 premium vines. Habersham Vineyards & Winery in Helen is one of Georgia’s oldest and largest wineries and has been winning awards since 1983. The charming Wolf Mountain Vineyards and Winery in Dahlonega won the state’s first-ever Gold medals at the respected San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles International Wine Competition. But whatever winery you choose, be sure to track your journey along the wine highway and pick up a “passport” at any participating winery, which will bestow the holder with one free tasting at participating wineries during a 10-day excursion.
7. SAMPLE SOUTHERN COOKING
There are meals and then there are meals to remember. A banquet that is more than food, but an experience in culture. So, if you really want a taste of the region, you will have to dine at one of the following restaurants at least once! We begin our culinary tour at The Smith House in Dahlonega, which has been serving up heaps of Southern hospitality since 1899. Here home-cooked, country cooking in a family-style setting has brought comfort to many a weary traveler. Next stop, the famed Dillard House in Dillard, where mountain views are as delicious as the sweet tea and biscuits. For a delectable meal in charming Georgia inns, reserve a dinner at the Beechwood Inn in Clayton, Glen Ella Springs in Clarkesville or the Lake Rabun Hotel in Lakemont. For Southern food with a modern twist, check out The City Cellar & Loft in Cartersville, Table & Main in Roswell and Queenie’s Southern Restaurant and Bar in Canton. For delicious yet speedy Southern staples for take-out, curbside and picnicking, check out Stanley’s on North Broad in Rome.
8. MINE FOR ADVENTURE
Georgia was the largest gold producing state in the Eastern United States for a spell. The gold may be mostly gone from the hills but there is plenty of history and fun to be mined in the quaint Gold Rush town of Dahlonega in Lumpkin County. Here you can tour underground mines, amble through a mining
museum and even pan for gems and jewels for some family fun. Consolidated Gold Mining Co. offers underground mine tours as well as gemstone and gold panning and the nearby Crisson Gold Mine offers gemstone mining and a 130-year-old Stamp Mill, the only one of its kind in Georgia. And you won’t want to miss the Dahlonega Gold Museum, housed inside the Lumpkin County Courthouse.
9. SWING INTO ACTION
If you have yet to visit the Swinging Bridge over the Toccoa River then it’s time to start booking. The 270-footlong bridge is the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi River. Located on the Benton MacKaye Trail and the Duncan Ridge National Recreation Trail in Fannin County, the bridge is accessed by trails on each side of the river. Both are short, pleasant walks for families, so no worries. In case you were looking for a bit more heart-pounding adventure, then check out ways to soar in our Leaf Peeping From the Sky.
10. MEANDER THROUGH MUSEUMS
North Georgia is home to some of the best museum’s in the entire state, and once you take a tour, we think you will agree. One of our favorites is the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville. This Smithsonian-affiliated museum is, simply put, gorgeous! Paintings, sculptures and modern art that represent the vast beauty of the American West transport guests to the wild landscapes found across our nation. Famous Western artists like George Catlin, Frederic Remington and Charles Russell rub elbows with awe-inspiring legends like Ansel Adams, Warhol as well as more than 150 Native American artifacts. Another top-rate museum in Cartersville is the Smithsonianaffiliated Tellus Science Museum, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Here you can stroll through the time of dinosaurs, join a fossil dig,
take a space voyage via the planetarium, and marvel at the amazing Weinman Mineral Gallery. Other museums not to miss include the Currahee Military Museum in Toccoa and the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth. And for some quick, silly family fun, why not check out North Georgia’s self-proclaimed “Biggest” family attractionExpedition: BigFoot The Sasquatch Museum in Cherry Log.
11. ADMIRE LOCAL CRAFTS
The North Georgia area is rife with local artists that make the world so much more colorful. First visit the beautiful Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia in Sautee Nacoochee. Showcasing the handcraft skills of countless Southern artists, the museum traces 200 years of the region’s folk pottery history and offers special events, an amazing gift shop, adult and youth workshops and a driving tour brochure of local artists.
A few of our favorite shops and local artists include 12 South Artisan Market in Hartwell, Mark of the Potter, Hickory Flat Pottery and Soque Artworks in Clarkesville, The Gourd Place in Sautee, Butler Galleries in Clayton and Brad Walker Pottery in Dahlonega.
12. SIP LOCAL MOONSHINE
We have Scotch-Irish immigrants who settled in Georgia in the 1780s to thank for our knowledge of distilling fruits into alcoholic libations. Whether you prefer apples, corn or peaches, we can turn those crops into some mighty tasty whisky or brandy. We recommend you sample these spirited concoctions at Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery in Dawson County, Grandaddy Mimm’s Moonshine in Union County and Moonrise Distillery in Clayton, where you can enjoy their libations with special tastings and get a behind the scenes tour of the distillery in action. Just be sure to pick your designated driver beforehand!
13. GIDDY UP AND GO
North Georgia loves horses, so if you are looking for a horseback riding adventure, you simply have to name the time and place. One of the most unique offerings is the Gold City Corral & Carriage Company in Dahlonega. Here you can get a taste of the Old West with horseback trail rides, carriage rides, dinner wagon rides, hayrides and more. They even offer a scenic, horse-drawn wagon ride that culminates at a fabulous cookout under the stars! Other horseback riding adventures can be enjoyed at Appalachian Trail Rides in Mineral Bluff, Trackrock Stables in Blairsville, Sunny Farms North in Dahlonega, Brasstown Valley Stables in Young Harris and Georgia Frontiers in Canton.
14. SWAY TO THE HOMETOWN BEAT
Whether you prefer “Georgia on My Mind” or “The Devil Came Down to Georgia,” our state can whip up some beautiful harmonies and a wicked fiddle player, too. So, enjoying the local music should be on your list. Of course, Athens made its mark in the early evolution of alternative rock and new wave thanks to bands like REM, Widespread Panic and B-52s. Here, you can enjoy a music history walking tour, music festivals (when there isn’t a pandemic) and plenty of hot spots to hear live music such as The Foundry, The Rialto Room at Hotel Indigo, The Classic Center Theatre and the 40-Watt Club, just to mention a few. October 18 marks the Historic Athens Porchfest, where four historic neighborhoods turn their porches into stages of local bands as music lovers stroll through for a listen. Other live music hotspots are Historic Dahlonega, home to the Crimson Moon, “southeast’s most intimate music revue,” and Matilda’s Music Under the Pines in Milton. Here, beloved bands like Atlanta’s own The Breeze Kings and other local favorites such as Mudcat and Swami Gone Bananas take “the porch” to play while guests decorate tables with lavish outdoor picnics and dance away the night under the twinkling lights hanging above in the shadow of towering Georgia pines.
15. GEOCACHING IN GEORGIA
You can join the world’s largest treasure hunt right here in North Georgia. If you aren’t familiar, geocaching is a recreational activity for hunting for hidden objects by using provided GPS locations, typically posted by organizations, cities or even counties. One such county that is passionate about its geocaching is Jackson. They have created a fun trail that consists of 30 caches all over Jackson County. You can pick up the trail passport at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce or the Braselton Town Hall. Or even easier, just download online at tourjacksoncounty.com . Also, Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites offer 47 caches in 44 state parks. Happy hunting!
16. EXPLORE OUR NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY
Georgia has a rich tapestry of Native American sites to explore. First stop, the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site in Cartersville. Here, you can begin an insightful trek across earthworks that once were home to several thousand Native Americans from 1000 AD to 1550 AD. The park contains six large earthen mounds, a plaza, village sites, borrow pits and a defensive ditch across 54 acres of land. In nearby Rome, you can explore the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home, who was a prominent Cherokee leader in the mid 19th century. Next, New Echota State Historic Site in Calhoun is one of the most significant Cherokee Indian sites in the country. The site offers 12 of the original and reconstructed Native American buildings, on-site fishing, scenic nature trails, self-guided tours, a visitor center and informative exhibits. And last but certainly not least is the Chief Vann House State Historic Site in Chatsworth, located just under 25 miles from Echota, which was the first brick residence in the Cherokee nation. Built by Cherokee leader James Vann in 1804, the 137-acre plantation offers guided house tours, a family-friendly, half-mile of winding nature trails, 19th century Cherokee farmstead and visitor center.
17. MEET SLOTHS, OTTERS, AND KANGAROOS
What is it about sloths that we love so much? They are cute, expert nappers, move as slowly as sap on a vine and they are also hard to spot at zoos because they typically like to sleep the day away. Well, you are in luck, because North Georgia offers some amazing one-on-one experiences with exotic animals at the North Georgia Wildlife Park in Cleveland. The Sloth & Friends
Experience allows guests 8 years and older to meet these adorable creatures in their new habitat, where you can pet, feed and marvel at these furry friends in a personal encounter that lasts nearly 45 minutes. And it’s not just sloths you can meet. The zoo offers personal experiences with otters, wolves, foxes, cougars, hedgehogs, and a “Meet the Babies” experience.
18. FLY FISHING ON THE SOQUE RIVER
“Amazing Trout Fishing,” “Monster Trout” and “A Fisherman’s Paradise” are just few of the phrases used to describe this stretch of fisherman’s fancy on the pristine Soque River. The river starts and ends in Habersham County, and the river’s icy temperatures are the secret to the success of the large rainbow, brook, and brown trout that you can catch here. The average trout weighs between 4 and 12 pounds, but with few public access points, it’s best to hire a fishing guide to enjoy the fishing fully! For more fishing spots, turn to page 54 where we feature North Georgia’s fishing glory in full detail.
19. GO RETRO
Looking for something fun with a little twist of nostalgia? Then you are in luck because North Georgia is home to several historic theaters and drive-ins that will delight the young and old. Take a drive to Wilderness Outdoor Movie Theater in Trenton, Swan Drive In in Blue Ridge or the Tiger Drive In Theatre in Tiger. Here you can enjoy a blast from the past that is seriously en vogue right now as you sit in the comfort of your car and watch movies on the big screen. Next, head to Toccoa for the Historic Ritz Theater, which features a variety of movies, musical acts, comedy shows and more. Originally constructed in 1939 and carefully restored by the City of Toccoa and the Fox Theatre Institute, the theatre has been artfully recreated from historic photographs, drawings and studies to ensure a historically fun evening. Other showstoppers include the beautifully restored Strand Theatre on Marietta’s historic square and the Historic Holly Theater in Dahlonega.
20. SNACK ON GEORGIA PEANUTS
Did you know that the peanut is Georgia’s official state crop? And our one and only Georgia U.S. President was a peanut farmer? We even produce nearly half of the peanuts produced in the country each year! Peanuts are big business in Georgia, bringing in more than $600 million to the state. Most of our peanuts are the Runner type, with about half of the supply making peanut butter and the other half used to make snacks and candy. And luckily for us, you can taste for yourself the “snacks and candy” variety at any one of the many homegrown boiled peanut stands peppered (or should we say salted) around North Georgia. One of our favorite is Fred’s Famous Peanuts in Helen, but there are many tasty options along your winding scenic travels.

7 Must-Do Experiences in the North Georgia Mountains
March 19, 2021 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment
The North Georgia Mountains are made up of incredible towns that are the perfect weekend getaway. Only two or so hours from Atlanta, the region is the ideal balance of a leisurely pace and easy connectivity.
Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned visitor, there’s always something new to find. Here are some of our favorite experiences that you can only have in the North Georgia Mountains.
This post contains affiliate links.
The Bets Things to Do in North Georgia
Visit the weird and quirky landmarks.
Fans of sites like Roadside America and Atlas Obscura have their work cut out for them in North Georgia. There are dozens of these road trip landmarks and oddities.
In Tiger, feed the creatures that wander between buildings on rope bridges at Goats on the Roof . There’s also gem mining and Amish desserts. Cleveland’s Babyland General Hospital is where you can see Cabbage Patch dolls being born.
The Schoolbus Graveyard is attached to Alonzo Wade Used Cars and Auto Parts and features retired buses painted in large murals. Nearby, Expedition: Bigfoot has artifacts related to the famed cryptid.
In Northwest Georgia , visit Old Car City , a sprawling junkyard with classic rusting cars painted with artwork. Howard Finster’s Paradise Gardens was the home of the folk artist, covered in his works.
The Calhoun Rock Garden is tucked behind a church and has intricately built miniature buildings with small pebbles and rocks.
Pick your own apples and more at the farms
The North Georgia Mountains also have plentiful farms, including many that are open to visitors. Jaemor Farms offers U-Pick of peaches and strawberries. There’s also a seasonal pumpkin patch.
Ellijay is Georgia’s apple picking capital, home to dozens of orchards like Mercier, Hillcrest, and Reece. And while not a traditional farm, detour to Gibbs Gardens to see acres of daffodils and other beautiful plant life.
Try “white lightning” at legal moonshine distilleries
Moonshine has a long history in the North Georgia Mountains and was the largest producer of the illegal spirit for many years. This tradition continues today with legal moonshine distilleries found throughout the region.
Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery uses a family recipe at their distillery, which is attached to both the city hall and a racing museum, a nod to the origins of NASCAR.
Grandaddy Mimms Moonshine Distillery And Museum in Blairsville is named for a local philanthropist and moonshiner from the 1930s.
Moonrise Distillery in Clayton creates the Corn Squeezins using traditional ingredients with modern equipment. Dalton Distillery makes corn whiskey and a sunflower spirit.
Go chasing waterfalls
North Georgia has dozens of incredible waterfalls that visitors can hike to with varying difficulty levels. Anna Ruby Falls in Helen has a short but steep paved path to the top.
Amicalola Falls is the highest waterfall in the state, over 700 feet high, and can be reached from many stairs from the base or you can drive to the top. It’s also part of the Appalachian Trail approach trail.
Long Creek Falls is on a bumpy forest service road. Explore Georgia has many other suggestions.
Sip Georgia wines at the wineries
Did you know that there’s a Georgia wine country ? Wineries can be found in much of North Georgia but are clustered around Helen, Dahlonega, Blairsville, and Cleveland.
In fact, Dahlonega has its own AVA designation. Wolf Mountain is one of the oldest wineries in the area, with its own award-winning restaurant. Yonah Mountain, Crane Creek, and 12 Spies are also great.
Book a spot on a North Georgia Wine Country Tour from Atlanta .
Chow down on barbecue
While there are many types of eateries in this area, there’s no shortage of barbecue restaurants. For visitors to Ellijay, Bigun’s Barbecue is a regular stop, known for its chopped pork and fried apple pies.
Bub-ba-Q has locations in Jasper and Woodstock. The menu includes wings, ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, and Hog-A-Chong-A, a barbecue quesadilla topped in Brunswick stew.
The “Hog Heaven” outside of Poole’s BBQ is a longtime favorite for its Pig Hill of Fame. Dating back to 1989, you can have dishes like barbecue sandwiches and plates with classic Southern sides.
‘Cue in Milton and Cumming is another easy stop on your way north, serving barbecue sandwiches and nachos, creamy macaroni and cheese, and decadent desserts.
Spend the night glamping
You don’t have to experience North Georgia through camping but can sleep in nature with comfort. Glamping is popular in this area with yurts, cabins, and more.
Elatse’Yi in Ellijay has Airstream trailers and bell tents, but it’s the geodesic domes that are totally unique. It allows guests to sleep under the stars in a full bed.
Accessible only via the five-mile hike from Amicalola Falls State Park , the Len Foote Hike Inn is a LEED friendly lodge that has rustic bunkrooms and includes all meals.
Getaway is just outside of Atlanta and the 21 onsite tiny houses have everything you need for a comfortable stay and are pet-friendly. Some cabins have bunk beds and all have a kitchenette and fire pit for cooking meals.
The Blue Ridge Treehouses in Blue Ridge allow guests to sleep amongst the trees without sacrificing amenities. They both have full beds and streaming-enabled televisions.
Add these to your North Georgia bucket list!

Visiting the Stunning North Georgia Mountain Towns
By: Author Melody Pittman
Posted on August 26, 2023
Are you wondering why it took me so long to discover the awe-inspiring North Georgia mountain towns? Me, too. Take a break from the sweltering heat and humidity of the south and indulge yourself in this picturesque region, filled with charming small towns that each have their own unique flavor. Brace yourself for an enchanting adventure amidst the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. Let me unveil a few enticing activities for your unforgettable journey.
Did You Know? I’ve now visited the North Georgia mountain towns, including Young Harris, Hiawassee, Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Blairsville, Dawsonville, and Helen a few times and found so much fun and beauty that I couldn’t wait to share it with you.
Where are the North Georgia Mountains? They start in the northeast corner of the state and spread westerly, about an hour thirty minutes from Atlanta. This is Blue Ridge Mountain territory. Scenic State 515 connects most of the towns, and is perfect for a southern road trip.
Table of Contents
Young Harris
Young Harris was the starting point for two of my North Georgia mountain trips. I’ve found that the Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa is the ultimate lodging choice, with luxury rooms, an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis, spa, hiking trails, and a plethora of amenities.
Lodging choices run the gamut from the main lodge to cottages and a unique spa suite.
Experience the joy of horseback riding in a charming country setting at Brasstown Stables. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned rider, they offer the perfect horse and guide for your adventure. Choose from one- or two-hour rides, or opt for a hand-led ride, specially designed for children under seven.
Immerse yourself in the lovely facility where you are free to interact with and capture beautiful moments with the horses. Although I couldn’t ride due to a back issue, I delighted in witnessing my daughter’s first horse ride and basking in the exquisite surroundings.
Don’t miss out on the amusement provided by Sassy Susan and Rockin’ Ronnie, two rocking barrel (wooden) horses, offering a delightful experience for those seeking a gentler ride.
For a delicious Italian food dining experience, visit Enrico’s Italian Restaurant where the pasta dishes are luscious and filled with ooey-gooey cheeses and a bold, flavorful red sauce. It would be a crime to not start with the warm garlic knots, and end with a tasty slice of pie or cheesecake.
Indulge in the exquisite wines of Crane Creek Vineyards , home to award-winning varietals such as Hellbender Red, Seyval Blanc, and Villard Noir Rosé. Discover the art of wine tasting as my husband and I savored a flight of these exceptional wines, accompanied by a leisurely moment on the gorgeous outdoor patio.
Enhancing our experience, we paired the flight with award-winning cheeses and crackers sourced from the well-stocked tasting room store.
Brasstown Valley Resort
Hello, Brasstown Valley Resort, where an incredible lobby awaits you with a sky-high stone fireplace and abundant seating arrangements, allowing you to indulge in breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The rustic lodge offers cozy nooks perfect for snuggling up with a good book, solving puzzles, and playing games with loved ones, as I did for countless hours. It’s a haven for catching up on social media and people-watching. Rooms are somewhat typical, but comfortable and clean.
Step outside and discover equally inviting outdoor seating areas, some adorned with rocking chairs and a mesmerizing fire pit.
I absolutely loved my stay at Brasstown Valley Resort, partially because of the captivating art gallery and small museum on the lower level, conveniently adjacent to the first-class sundries and golf shop. The wide array of options available for shopping was simply superb.
From must-have golf items to a delightful variety of kid’s clothing, toys, elegant home decor, trendy accessories, and stylish apparel, there was something for everyone.
And there is no denying the indoor and outdoor pools at Brasstown Valley Resort are fantastic.
Brasstown Valley Resort Dining Options
Brasstown Valley has two nice onsite restaurants: The Dining Room and Brassies Grill. The food is tasty and reasonably priced, and the waitstaff is attentive and good at their jobs.
I’ve enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Dining Room at Brasstown Valley Resort and never had less than a 10/10 meal. For breakfast, indulge in the southern breakfast buffet, which will most likely have everything you could want to start your day, or the Chef’s Skillet is darned tasty.
For lunch, we kept it light with a Brasstown Club one day and heavy with a Chicken Broccoli Alfredo another. Dinner called for juicy Steak Frittes and a chef specialty, Brasstown Meatloaf. The dish is bursting with flavors from a three-meat combination (bison, ground veal, and Wagyu beef) and is covered with luscious mushroom gravy.
For dessert, the bread pudding is a winner!
Pro Tip: Enjoy the outdoor scenery up close and personal with the Dining Room’s outdoor porch seating.
Brassies is a sports bar-style eatery, featuring a wide array of games and TVs for your entertainment. Indulge in our onion rings and a delectable spinach & artichoke dip, guaranteed to tantalize your taste buds. The pretzels with beer cheese are an irresistible choice, too.
The enticing selection of main entrees, include Fish & Chips (the most popular dish on the menu), Fish Tacos, flavorful Chicken Quesadillas, and juicy burgers, just to name a few.
Experience the allure of Hiawassee, a haven for hiking enthusiasts, offering breathtaking scenic overlooks and thrilling outdoor lake activities. And what better way to immerse yourself in the wonders of the North Georgia mountains than by chasing waterfalls?
Discover hidden treasures as you embark on picturesque hikes, winding through awe-inspiring landscapes, where you’ll even have the opportunity to climb over tree trunks and duck under branches for primo photo opportunities. Hope you are more prepared than we were on our hike, meaning bring lots of water and wear appropriate hiking shoes.
Don’t miss the majestic Blue Hole Falls, tucked away along a one-mile trail, beckoning you with its beauty.
A swimming hole at the bottom of the falls provides a refreshing drink and cool-down spot at the bottom. On the same trail, you’ll find a second waterfall, High Shoals.
Do some shopping in Hiawassee, North Georgia at roadside antique shops (each loaded with treasures and trinkets), C&J Mountain Outfitters, TATA on Main, and Hometown Quilt Studio. One of the best Christmas stores you could imagine is Always Christmas , connected with other nice clothing, home decor, collectibles, and souvenir shops.
Hiawassee Dining and Adventures
Enjoy a delightful dining experience at Sundance Grill , offering a bounty of breakfast options to start your day right. Indulge in the Gyro Omelet, savor the flavorful breakfast sandwiches (with double sausage and cheese), or treat yourself to the irresistible Stuffed French Toast. Not only that, but Sundance Grill also serves lunch and dinner options.
Sand Bar is a sandy beach eatery with lake views, a food truck, live music, corn hole, and kid’s activities. It has a relaxing atmosphere and everyone appears to be having fun there. Try the Pimento Cheese Dip with tortilla chips or Boneless Wings, both tasty choices.
Get ready for an exciting adventure at Splash Island, located at Ridges Resort! This on-water obstacle course boasts inflatables, slides, swings, and bouncing platforms that will delight. Also consider exploring the nearby river tubing and zip line spots, especially in the direction of Helen, known as “ Georgia’s Little Bavaria .”
Drop by Hiawassee Brew for a funky Cherry Cordial Stout or Hop Dang Diggity IPA. They have an inviting outdoor patio and serve food, as well.
Bell Mountain
My favorite attraction, maybe in the whole North Georgia mountains, is a trip to Bell Mountain. You will experience an exciting drive and amazing 360-degree panoramic views as you wind up to the rugged park and historic site in Hiawassee.
Once you park your car at the top, you can walk up the steep hill to the plateau for epic views of Lake Chatuge.
The landscape is surrounded by enormous rock formations that have been spray painted with graffiti over the years. While I read many complaints about “vandalism” online, I thought it looked pretty and interesting.
Blue Ridge is the jewel of the North Georgia mountain towns and the most visited of the cities. As bad as I want to cheer for the underdogs and lesser-known destinations, Blue Ridge is truly all that and a bag of chips.
Experience the elevated shopping scene in Blue Ridge, surpassing other mountain towns in sophistication and variety. Immerse yourself in the walkable downtown, where finding a convenient parking spot is a breeze. Discover endless delights as you leisurely explore the charming streets for hours on end.
Though I haven’t been to Toccoa River Swinging Bridge yet, it is on my list and a highly popular outdoor activity.
Indulge in a sensory journey with wine tastings, beer flights, and delectable gourmet fruit pies. Embark on a thrilling treetop canopy adventure or embark on a scenic ride aboard the renowned Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. The city of Blue Ridge is chock full of amazing things to see and do.
A Taste of Blue Ridge
If I had to mention the one place that all my readers and friends told me not to miss, it would be Mercier Orchards , where savoring mouthwatering fruit pies will leave you speechless. From cherries to peaches, the flavors will transport you to a world of bliss. And let’s not forget, Blue Ridge proudly holds the title of the Trout Fishing Capital of Georgia .
Harvest on Main and Chester Brunnenmeyer’s Bar & Grill are two restaurants you should not miss. I recommend lunch at Harvest on Main for the Blue Ridge Hot Brown (the cheesy mornay sauce is fabulous!) and Chester B’s for dinner.
Chester Brunnenmeyer’s is a rustic American establishment with a lively atmosphere, professional waitstaff, and hard-hitting hand-crafted cocktails. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.
I had the pleasure of meeting up with a dear friend, Karon, who resides in the charming town of Ellijay, just an hour north of Atlanta. Karon is the author of 100 Things to Do in the North Georgia Mountains Before You Die , part of a national book series by Reedy Press.
She graciously gave me a delightful tour of her beloved hometown, where I discovered a vibrant downtown area brimming with quaint shops and a handful of exceptional restaurants. Let me entice you with a preview of my two personal faves: Country Corner Kitchen, where you can savor delectable Cuban breakfast dishes alongside a comforting cup of Cuban coffee, and Ellijay Wood-Fired Pizza, renowned for mouthwatering pies and a daily fondue special that is simply irresistible.
Learn more about these culinary gems in this captivating post.
Ellijay has a darling coffee shop and a popular biking scene. The bike shop has top-notch bicycles and accessories, so if you are in the market for an upgrade, look no further.
Ellijay also has primo wineries, with Engelheim , Cartecay, and Ott Farms Vineyards, to mention a few. My husband and I had wine tastings at a couple, and the setting and interior decor made you want to be there and feel like family. While I’m not typically a sweet wine fan, I really loved Sweet Molly at Engelheim, made from Traminette grapes.
The Fried Pies of the North Georgia Mountains
You absolutely can’t miss out on the hand-held fried pies in Ellijay. This charming town takes pride in being a leader of apple houses in the country, with many of them open all year round. Trust me, they are all worth a visit, but if I had to choose, R & A Orchards would be my top pick.
It’s no wonder that Ellijay holds the prestigious title of “Apple Capital of Georgia”.
While fried apple pies are the ultimate crowd-pleaser, keep an eye out for the delightful flavors of pumpkin, peach, and pecan during the fall season. And if deep-fried pastries aren’t your thing, don’t worry! There are plenty of other mouthwatering treats to choose from, like homemade fudge, mini pies, and the ever-popular cider donuts. I may or may not have sampled all of the above.
Check out the Airbnb offerings for mountain house rustic retreats like the one we stayed at shown below. I will warn you that they are sometimes 20 minutes or so out of town, so know before you go.
Blairsville
I had the pleasure of meeting up with my friend Howard, who has owned a charming cabin nestled in the peaceful woods of Blairsville for the past two decades. Blairsville, an authentic pre-Civil War mountain community, is nestled deep in the breathtaking Chattahoochee National Forest. Let me tell you, it’s as adorable as can be!
Howard and I chased waterfalls, some easily viewed from the backroads, shopped, and had lunch in another adorable downtown square. The Sawmill Place , serving breakfast and lunch, was excellent for juicy burgers with comfort food sides. Blairsville has some awesome murals you will want to check out.
If you enjoy shopping, Alexander’s , in Blairsville, is an absolute must. The journey to this hidden gem may be winding and picturesque, but the real excitement begins once you step inside their expansive 50,000 square feet retail space.
Prepare to be amazed by the wide range of goods available, from stylish home decor to exquisite furniture, fashionable Vera Bradley products to top-notch sporting goods and hunting supplies. The surprises never end!
Since its establishment in 1953, this small yet mighty general store has become a true force in the retail world. Missing out on this shopping haven would simply be a shame. After all, they didn’t earn the tagline “everything under the sun” for nothing.
If you want to get outdoors and enjoy some hiking, fishing, or leaf-peeing in the fall, Vogel State Park at the base of Blood Mountain is where to go. You can also camp and park your RV here, something I filed away for my next trip through the North Georgia mountains.
Pro Tip: Just two miles away is Sunrise Grocery , a roadside attraction and market with fresh boiled peanuts, locally made jam, jellies, candies, and soaps, plus the freshest vegetables and fruit around. Sunrise Grocery first opened in 1920 and has been featured in Southern Living Magazine .
Brasstown Bald
Discover the ultimate allure of Blairsville – Brasstown Bald Mountain. As the highest peak in Georgia, it offers breathtaking overlooks and panoramic 360-degree views.
From the observation deck, you’ll be treated to captivating sights of four states: Georgia (sometimes even catching a glimpse of Atlanta’s skyline), Tennessee , North Carolina , and South Carolina . Let the onsite markers guide you on this remarkable journey. Prepare to be enraptured by the enchanting beauty that awaits you.
Pro Tip: You can bring your dog, but they must be leashed at all times.
Dawsonville
Discover the enchanting Amicalola Falls State Park , where you can embark on a breathtaking journey down the awe-inspiring 600+ step walk, surrounded by the magnificent waterfall. My legs were sore for days, but it was a challenge I graciously accepted.
Nestled in Dawsonville, known as the “Moonshine Capital of the World,” this park offers an array of thrilling hiking trails that will captivate your senses.
Amicalola stands as one of Georgia’s premier state park resorts, boasting stylish rooms that provide sweeping views of the majestic mountains. Unwind and soak up the mesmerizing sunset on the expansive deck, or find comfort in the beautiful lobby with its warm ambiance, complete with a cozy stone fireplace and an onsite restaurant serving delectable cuisine.
For an extraordinary experience, indulge in the glamping options available at the state park. With a plethora of amenities and activities to keep you enthralled for days on end, you’ll be transported to a world of relaxation and adventure.
Pro Tip: Always be alert for bears in this state park.
Back at the adventure lodge, enjoy 3-D archery, hatchet-throwing, and zip lining options if you need add-on activities. However, Amicalola Falls is by far the main draw. This magnificent 729-foot cascading waterfall is one of the highest east of the Mississippi and one you’ll want to take hundreds of photos at.
There are hiking options for different views of the falls. Those who are physically challenged or unable to hike can take advantage of the strategically placed accessible platforms offering stellar postcard-worthy views and even a mist from the proximity of the mighty falls.
Grab tasty bbq from Big D’s BBQ , with multiple locations. I loved their Southern-style smoked barbecue pork and chicken, while the side dishes of green beans and mac & cheese were great accompaniments.
Then, have a free moonshine tasting at Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery , creating small-batch, hand-crafted spirits from 150-year-old recipes.
A super fun fall activity in Dawsonville is to stop by Uncle Shucks Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch, where you can pick your own pumpkins and enjoy the jumping pillow, tire mountain, and kids maze. Concessions run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, featuring turkey legs, hotdogs and corndogs, roasted corn, fried Oreos, and funnel cakes.
Helen is the mountain town with an identity problem—it looks like and feels like Bavaria. Step across the continent and experience German culture , food, and fun in Helen’s quaint and charming town, lined with cobblestone streets.
I like to think of this town as a mini- Gatlinburg , without as many cheesy family-friendly attractions. You’ll still find a plethora of things to do, but the wine tasting and river tubing the Chattahoochee seemed to be the most popular to me.
If you’re looking to experience the off-the-hook food scene in Helen, you’re in for a treat! Indulge in the delectable delights at the charming German specialty restaurants scattered throughout town. Among them, The Heidelberg beckons with its stunning three-story building, while Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Cafe entices you with mouthwatering Czech bread dumplings and classic Hungarian cuisine.
Prepare to be won over by the irresistible flavors that await you in Helen’s culinary paradise!
Experience the charm of Helen, Georgia, with two cool and thriving attractions. Ride on the mountain roller coaster, a thrilling adventure unique to the area. And don’t miss the opportunity to discover precious gemstones while panning at Dukes Creek Mines. Uncover rubies, sapphires, and more as you delve into this gem-filled treasure trove.
But that’s not all! If you’re still craving adventure, make your way to Anna Ruby Falls . For just a $5 admission fee (16 years old and older), embark on a half-mile journey along a paved trail to witness the breathtaking 150-ft tall cascading twin falls in all their splendor.
