Uganda Entry & Visa Requirements

Navigating Uganda’s Red Tape: Entry visa requirements like where to get it, passport validity, vaccinations, customs, and travel restrictions.

Uganda’s entry visa requirements have not changed much in the last decade, but a few changes like the application process have come up to control pandemics and make it easier for all travelers.

We all want to get out there alive a bit, get wild and stretch our minds. An African savanna is a great place for that. Open wide spaces, clean air, new cultures, and quiet noise. All we needed before the Covid pandemic hit us was a passport, a visa, an air ticket, and a few bucks, and that’s it!

A few star-gazing nights under the African sky are suitable for everyone. Now, you will have to tolerate a couple of things to have a marvelous safari trip to Uganda , like many other destinations are doing it. To keep you and everyone, including the animals , protected.

Uganda’s borders remain open to tourists and anyone visiting the country either by land or air. But most travelers need a passport and a visa to enter Uganda and we will tell you the entry visa process below.

Uganda Entry Requirements

• Covid 19:  Effective March 7th, it is no longer necessary to present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate upon arrival. However, if you are transiting or departing, you must be mindful of the entry requirements at your final destination.
• Passport validity:  To enter Uganda, it is necessary to have a valid passport for at least six months from the date of arrival.
• Visas:  To obtain a visa for Uganda, you can either visit a Uganda Consulate in your country or apply for an ‘e-visa’ online. 
• East African Visa  (one visa for Uganda, Rwanda, & Kenya) :  You can also apply for a 90-day East African Tourist Visa. 
• Yellow fever certificate:  You will need a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to enter Uganda.

Uganda Visa Requirements

Nationals of most countries require a visa to enter Uganda. They must apply and pay for the Uganda entry visa in advance electronically online at https://visas.immigration.go.ug/ .

Entry visa rulings are prone to change, so all visitors must check the current situation with their travel agent or a Ugandan diplomatic mission before they travel.

The following are the requirements for Uganda entry visa:

• You must have a valid passport issued by your government. Your passport must be valid past the date of your expected departure from Uganda (6 months)
• Green card holders must provide a copy of their green card
• Duly filled Visa Application Form
• You must have an international Inoculation Certificate against Yellow Fever.
• You must obtain a Uganda Government VISA before entry into Uganda.
• It is mandatory to have the following to obtain a Uganda Government entry visa: (a) Application forms are available online. Visa Application Form (b) Submit your passport and one (1) recent passport–size photograph. (c) Pay applicable Fees, by money order or (cashier’s cheque) only. (d) In a secure envelope, enclose your passport, the one photograph, and the money order (or cashier cheque) to Uganda Mission. (e) Allow five (5) working days for your visa application to be processed for an application submitted by mail or in person.
• Applications for entry visas may be submitted by mail, in person, or by E-visa. Applications by post must be accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed USPSExpress Overnight envelope only for shipping your document(s) back to you. Any other courier service with traceable delivery methods like FedEx and DHL is recommended.
• Entry visa applications should be submitted one month before travel, at the earliest, and not later than four days before travel.
• Correct visa fee ( USD 50 for a single entry visa). All travelers should pay visa fees online.
• Letter of invitation/introduction, if traveling on business.
• Applicants may be requested to submit additional supporting documentation.

Which Country Doesn’t Require a Visa To Travel To Uganda?

Citizens of the following countries do not require visas to enter Uganda—but they should have a valid passport:

• Italy (Diplomatic Passport holders only)
• Sierra Leone
• The Solomon Islands
• St. Vincent and Grenadines

Things you must know traveling to Uganda

Valid passport.

Check well in advance that you have a valid passport and that it won’t expire within six months of the date you intend to leave Uganda. Should your passport be lost or stolen, it will generally be easier to get a replacement if you have a photocopy of the important pages.

Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate

There is a risk of yellow fever transmission all over Uganda, all travelers entering the country have to be vaccinated to protect themselves, including travelers from the UK, USA, and Australia. You will be asked at the border or international airport for an international health certificate showing you’ve had a yellow fever shot . Fortunately, the Yellow Fever shot currently can last a lifetime, so you can do it once.

Cost of a Uganda Entry Visa

• A standard Uganda single-entry visa, valid for three months, costs USD 50 .
• Student entry visas cost USD 20. Multiple-entry visa valid for 12 months, costs USD 100 .
• 24 months visa costs USD 150 .
• 24-36-months visa costs USD 200 .

Travelers with a single-entry visa intending to leave and return to Uganda (e.g., to trekking gorillas in Rwanda or visiting nearby Kenya) may find it more useful to apply for an East African Visa (cross-border joint visa).

The East African visa allows entry into all three countries (Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda) on a single visa which costs USD 100.

If, however, you intend to spend less than seven days in Uganda before leaving again, you can purchase an inland transit visa for only USD 15.

Uganda Entry Visa Extension

Immigration authorities now generally only stamp your passport for a maximum of one month upon arrival. Immigration can extend your entry visa without charge to three months at any immigration office. You’ll be charged USD 100 per day if you overstay your visa .

In Kampala , you may be asked to provide an official letter from a sponsor or the hotel where you are staying. In Jinja and Mbarara, recent reports suggest you are more likely to have your stay extended to three months without any paperwork.

Valid Driving License

If there is any possibility you’ll want to drive or hire a vehicle in Ugand a, bring a valid driving license . Your domestic (home country) driving license will suffice for a period of up to three months.

If you intend to drive in Uganda for longer, you can either obtain a Ugandan Driver’s license or (this is far cheaper and simpler) bring an international driving license with your domestic license. Rather than carrying the originals, a photocopy will suffice.

Keeping your documents safe

For security reasons, it’s advisable to detail all your important information on one sheet of paper, photocopy it, and distribute a few copies in your luggage , your money belt, and amongst relatives or friends at home.

The sort of things you want to include are your identification and address details and refund information, travel insurance policy details and 24-hour emergency contact number, passport number, details of relatives or friends to be contacted in an emergency, bank and credit card details, camera and lens serial numbers, etc.

Entry requirements for pets

Cats and dogs must have a certificate of good health from a registered veterinarian in the area of origin, which must be issued, signed, and stamped no earlier than 10 days before arrival in Uganda. You will also need a certificate confirming the animal is free of rabies and has been inoculated as necessary.

Dogs require vaccinations against distemper, parvo-virus, rabies, hepatitis, and leptospirosis , not less than 30 days before arrival. Cats should be vaccinated against rabies and feline enteritis, not less than 30 days before arrival.

Uganda Boarder Customs

When crossing the border into Uganda, you can bring in certain items without having to pay customs duty. These include 400 cigarettes or 500g of tobacco, one bottle of spirits and wine, 2.5 liters of beer, and a 1oz bottle of perfume.

If you’re leaving Uganda and want to take home some souvenirs, there are no restrictions on what you can export. However, if you plan on taking game trophies like teeth, bones, horns, shells, claws, skin, hair, feathers, or other durable items, you’ll need to obtain an export permit.

Bringing A Drone To Uganda

Application for a visa

All visa applications must be submitted online in advance of travel through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda E-Visa website:  https://visas.immigration.go.ug/  .

There is no  visa available on arrival at Entebbe Airport or at the High Commission

Visa applications are subject to approval; any person intending to travel to Uganda must apply online and have a Travel Authorisation/Visa Approval  Letter before embarking on their travel to Uganda as there are no visas on arrival.

The Visa Section at the Uganda High Commission is open to the public for enquiries and personalisation, Monday to Friday from 10:00a.m. to 1:00pm only ( except on Public Holidays in Uganda and the United Kingdom ). 

Please note there is currently no personalisation of the East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) at our office, applicants will need to proceed to Entebbe with their approval document.

Visa applications cannot be expedited, thus, the onus is on the applicant to apply in good time in advance of travel.

Applicants are advised to only submit their application in a period that falls within 3 months of their departure from Uganda. The validity of an approved E-Visa is three months starting from the issue date - visas expire 90 days from issue .

Applicants must apply for a visa using the  E-Visa  portal.

Can  I  use my phone to apply/modify my visa application?

All applicants are advised to use a computer or laptop with Google Chrome as the browser.

I'm unable to make payment, can you help?

With your Application ID visit   https://www.visas.immigration.go.ug/#/check ,  select 'Applications', 'Manage Application' then login to your application with your Application ID, Passport Number and Date of Birth, making payment with making payment online using your UK Debit/Credit Card.

Use the Google Chrome browser and ensure pop ups are enabled in your browser settings. 

How do  I  get my travel authorisation/visa approval letter?

Visit  https://www.visas.immigration.go.ug/#/check , enter your Passport No, Date of Birth and Application ID. If your visa has been approved it will state 'approved' and you can download your visa authorisation letter. 

I have previously visited Uganda and have been able to get a visa on arrival, is this still the case?

All applicants must apply for a visa using the above mentioned website in advance of travel. Applicants will not be allowed to board the flight to Entebbe without a Travel Authorization letter. 

I have previously visited your High Commission alone/as a group when submitting visa applications for you to manually process, do you still offer this service?

No. Whether you are travelling alone or as a group, each applicant must apply online through the above mentioned website in advance of travel.

Why does it say contact in Uganda is an 'invalid field'?

If applicants are completing this field and using a '+' sign when entering data such as a telephone number, they are advised to omit the '+' sign and write the full number, including relevant prefix, out.

On Step 3 when adding documents such as a copy of my passport, passport size photograph and vaccination certificate,  I'm  getting the error, 'file size is too big'?

Maximum file size is 250KB . There are many different websites and computer software, such as 'Microsoft Paint' and 'snipping tool', which can allow you to adjust the size of your files accordingly.

How long does it take to find out the outcome of my application?

The turnaround for a visa application can vary and is a case by case basis.  You may have your visa approved within three working days or you may be required to submit further documentation which can then mean this takes longer e.t.c There is no one answer!

How can  I  check the status of my application?

When wanting to check the status of my application, it does not allow me to select my year of birth which is prior to 1959?

Press the arrow allowing you to change your year of birth, select '1959', which should then close the scroll. Click the arrow again to change the year of birth and you should be able to correctly select the relevant date.

What happens if  I  am requested to add my documents?

Click 'Applications', 'manage my applications', fill in your information and select 'modify', adding the relevant document.

What does 'point of entry or where you want to have your visa personalised' mean?

This is where your fingerprints are taken and your visa sticker is put in your passport.

What happens once my visa is approved?

Download your approval letter and you can proceed to Entebbe to personalise your visa at the border. 

What are the current COVID-19 entry requirements?

I am exempt from the yellow fever vaccine, what should I upload?

An exemption letter/certificate.

If I have a Home Office Travel Document do I need a visa?

If I hold a Ugandan Passport do I need a visa to travel to Uganda?

Unfortunately not; applicants should endeavour to apply for a visa in good time, prior to travel.

REQUIREMENT FOR YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION CERTIFICATE

The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health is committed to protect the population from the risk of importing or further spreading Yellow Fever virus by establishing entry and exit requirement on Yellow Fever Vaccination for travellers. 

Proof of vaccination is often required for travellers arriving from countries with risk of Yellow Fever transmission and sometimes for travellers in transit through such countries.

LIST OF COUNTRIES WHOSE NATIONALS DO NOT REQUIRE TO PAY FORA VISA TO ENTER UGANDA:

Nationals of these countries are issued gratis (free of charge) visas upon their arrival. You do not need to apply for a visa for entering in Uganda.

Reconsider travel to Uganda due to  crime, terrorism , and  anti-LGBTQI+ legislation . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Country summary:  There remains a threat of  terrorist attacks  in Uganda and throughout the region. Numerous terrorist attacks have occurred in Uganda, to include religious venues, schools, and areas frequented by tourists, resulting in the deaths of Ugandans as well as foreign visitors.  U.S. citizens should remain alert and avoid large public gatherings. In October 2023, ISIS-Central Africa claimed responsibility for killing two international tourists and a Ugandan driver within Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Violent crime , such as armed robbery, home invasion, and sexual assault, presents a serious threat to those visiting and residing in Uganda and can occur at any time, especially in larger cities, including Kampala, Jinja and Entebbe, in the Karamoja region, and along Uganda’s western and northern borders. Local police may lack appropriate resources to respond effectively to serious crime in most areas.

The May 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act raises the  risk that LGBTQI+ persons, and those perceived to be LGBTQI+, could be prosecuted and subjected to life imprisonment or death based on provisions in the law , and may be subject to mandatory reporting to the police if they are suspected of committing or intending to commit acts in violation of the law, and could face harassment or attacks by vigilantes. Those perceived to support the dignity and human rights of LGBTQI+ persons (including those of youth under the age of 18) could be prosecuted and imprisoned for multi-year sentences.   Even an unsubstantiated accusation of supporting the LGBTQI+ community can create risks from police and vigilantes.  Read the country information page for additional information on travel to Uganda.

If you decide to travel to Uganda:

• Remain alert and avoid large public gatherings.
• Keep a low profile.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Do not display signs of wealth, such as expensive watches or jewelry.
• Use caution when walking or driving at night.
• Remain with a group of friends in public.
• Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
• Do not open your door for people at your hotel/residence unless you know who it is.
• Do not leave food and drinks unattended in public, especially in local clubs.
• Stay alert in locations frequented by foreign tourists.
• Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
• Carry a copy of your passport and visa (if applicable) and secure originals in your hotel safe.
• Provide your itinerary to a family member or friend.
• Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  (STEP)  to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
• Be mindful that any public identification with the LGBTQI+ community, as either a member or supporter, could be grounds for prosecution, and that even private consensual same-sex relations are illegal.
• Follow the Department of State on  Facebook  and  Twitter .
• Review the  Country Security Report  for Uganda.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

U.S. citizens intending to travel to Uganda for holiday, tourism, business, study, visit, and/or medical treatment are required to apply and obtain a visa online in advance of travel on the Government of Uganda’s Electronic Visa/Permit Application System website . U.S. citizens who have recently attempted entry without completing the electronic visa process in advance of their travel have been refused boarding by the airlines and/or entry into Uganda. The U.S. Embassy is not able to assist U.S. citizens in gaining entry to Uganda.

All travelers to Uganda must have a valid yellow fever immunization card.

Travelers may also contact the  Permanent Mission of the Republic of Uganda to the United Nations  in New York. Overseas, inquiries can be made at the nearest Ugandan embassy or consulate.

Ugandan immigration imposes a fine of approximately $30 per day for visa overstays and may detain individuals who overstay their visas until the fine is paid. Employment permits are required. Working without a valid permit in Uganda may result in fines and/or detention. Be aware that the Ugandan immigration officer at the port of entry determines the length of authorized stay, which is generally from two weeks to three months for tourists. Immigration policies are not always consistently applied and may change without notice. Extensions of duration of stay may be requested at Ugandan immigration headquarters, Jinja Road, in Kampala. Avoid any offers by private individuals claiming that they can assist with visa issues.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to Uganda or foreign residents living in Uganda.

Some airlines require travelers to Uganda to present the physical credit card used to purchase the plane tickets upon checking in at the airport before they can receive a boarding pass. Check with your airline for more information.

Safety and Security

In April 2019, a U.S. citizen was kidnapped in Queen Elizabeth National Park, in the southwest region of Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The U.S. citizen was later released unharmed. 

There is increased terrorist activity within the region. Recent events include the Ugandan Police Force reportedly foiling a planned bomb attack on churches by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Kampala; reported foiled plots of church attacks and subsequent explosive devices found in Kampala, and a fatal terror attack by ISIS-CA killing two international tourists and Ugandan driver within Queen Elizabeth National Park. Anyone can be a victim at any time; U.S. citizens should remain alert and avoid large public gatherings. Communications plans are basic ways for people to ensure they can be reached while on travel or anywhere really. This includes having different types of communications (email, phone, satellite phone), letting people know when one will be in an area of cell coverage to receive messages, and providing phone numbers of the locations one will be staying etc. The State Department discusses this in the link here: https://exchanges.state.gov/us/keeping-touch .

Northern and Eastern Uganda : The South Sudan-Uganda border is porous, and there are frequent reports of criminal trade and movement of people across the border. Due to the influx of refugees from South Sudan into Uganda, there is a strain on the region’s health, education, and security resources. Sporadic clashes may occur along the shared border, which may be poorly demarcated; a section is under dispute in the Moyo area of northwestern Uganda, abutting the Kajo Keji area of South Sudan.

Crime and conflict threat in the Karamoja region in northeastern Uganda remain volatile. The Uganda People’s Defense Force actively engages criminals in the Karamoja Region, and armed confrontation between police and criminal elements can occur. Emergency medical care and auto repair services are lacking in remote areas of the Karamoja Region. The U.S. Embassy requires its employees to follow enhanced protocols when traversing the Karamoja region.

Southwestern Uganda/Western Uganda : U.S. citizens traveling in southwestern Uganda along Uganda’s western border with the DRC should be aware that armed groups, including those aligned with terrorist organizations such as ISIS-CA, are active in eastern DRC, along with ongoing military operations to counter the threat in the region. Travelers should review the  country information page and Travel Advisory  for the DRC. Refugee flows across the border can number in the thousands, and there is a risk of incursions by armed combatants and criminals.

There is a potential for violence related to ethnic and tribal tensions in the western districts of Bundibuguyo, Ntoroko, and Kasese, near the border with the DRC. U.S. citizens should be vigilant and monitor local media for the latest news.

There is an uptick in terrorist activity in this specific region. Attacks in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kasese,and Mpondwe-Lhubiriha have resulted in deaths of Ugandan as well as foreign nationals.

The Governments of Rwanda and Uganda closed the Rwanda-Uganda border for extended periods of time in the last year. Some shutdowns are 24-hour closures and others are only overnight closures. Travelers should ensure the border is open when attempting to travel between Rwanda and Uganda.

The U.S. Embassy requires its employees to follow enhanced protocols when traversing the region from Lake Albert down to the Rwandan border.

The U.S. State Department encourages overseas travelers to develop communication plans to ensure they can be reached while traveling. This includes having different types of communications (email, phone, satellite phone), letting people know when one will be in an area of cell coverage to receive messages, and providing phone numbers of the locations one will be staying etc.

Demonstrations : Demonstrations in Kampala and other cities periodically occur in response to local political developments Police routinely use tear gas – and sometimes live ammunition resulting in deaths – to disperse protests in urban areas. U.S. citizens are urged to monitor media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Avoid demonstrations, as even peaceful gatherings can turn violent without notice.

Involvement in Local Social Issues : All U.S. citizen travelers to Uganda should ensure that they have the correct visa for their visit to Uganda. Missionary and NGO work frequently require a work visa. Travelers who plan to engage in religious or civil society activities should obtain the appropriate visa from the Embassy of Uganda before departing the United States. The Government of Uganda has shown an increased interest in the activities of foreigners working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Local authorities have been known to detain, question, and arrest foreigners in Uganda, and some visitors have been ordered removed from the country.

Crime : Pick pocketing, purse snatching, and thefts from hotel rooms, parked vehicles, and vehicles stalled in traffic jams are common. Armed robberies of pedestrians and car jackings also occur, sometimes during daylight hours and in public places. Victims usually remain unharmed if they do not resist. Assaults and property snatching by boda boda (motorcycle operators and passengers) are routinely reported. Food and drinks should never be left unattended in public. Women have reported being drugged and taken to another location and sexually assaulted. Similar tactics are used to rob individuals on public transportation. Remain with a group of friends in public, as single individuals are more likely to be targeted.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Uganda. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

Victims of Crime : Victims of sexual assault should seek medical assistance and counseling immediately regarding prophylactic treatment to help prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. A  list of local medical providers  can be found on the U.S. Embassy website.

Domestic Violence : U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism : The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties : You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification : If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Currency : U.S. currency notes in denominations less than $100 may be exchanged at a less favorable exchange rate. Travelers cannot exchange or use U.S. currency printed earlier than 2006. Western Union, MoneyGram, and other types of money transfer facilities are available in Kampala and other cities throughout the country. ATMs are available, but many only function for customers who have an account with a specific Ugandan bank.

Charities/NGOs : U.S. citizens planning to work for or donate money to an NGO should have the charity provide references of past volunteers whom they may contact. U.S. citizens have reported intimidation and harassment by directors of organizations when questioned about the organization's activities or use of donated funds.

Information about registering an NGO can be obtained from the Ugandan NGO Bureau, which has offices within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They can be reached at (256) (0) 414 253 446. If a Certificate of Good Conduct/Criminal Background Check is needed to start or work for an NGO, you can obtain it by contacting your local police or on  the FBI website  before traveling.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance : Accessibility to public transportation may be difficult for those with mobility issues. Foot paths and road crossings present barriers. There are no free or reduced taxi fares, or other accommodations in communication, lodging, medical facilities, restaurants, cafes, bars, or other tourist spots for disabled tourists.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  The May 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA) includes penalties up to life imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations and capital punishment for crimes of “aggravated homosexuality” (such as serial offenders). Youth under the age of 18 could be prosecuted and imprisoned for multi-year sentences. LGBTQI+ persons, including youth, may be subject to forced conversion therapy – a dangerous and discredited practice that causes significant harm, including high rates of suicide-related thoughts and behaviors among LGBTQI+ youth. Social acceptance of homosexuality is very low. LGBTQI+ persons, or persons perceived to be LGBTQI+, could face harassment, imprisonment, blackmail, and violence, with heightened risk surrounding the passage of the AHA; The public is required to report to the police a person suspected of committing or intending to commit acts enumerated in the law. Hoteliers are not permitted to knowingly provide rooms to individuals who may commit acts deemed illegal in the AHA. Individuals or organizations viewed as publicly supporting the dignity and human rights of LGBTQI+ persons could be prosecuted and imprisoned for multi-year sentence, including those that attend a same-sex marriage either inside or outside of Uganda’s borders. LGBTQI+ organizations or those that advocate for the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons may be deemed illegal under the law. Medical facilities in Uganda are limited and only equipped to handle minor medical emergencies. Surgical capabilities are inadequate, and blood supplies may be insufficient. Outside Kampala, hospitals are scarce and offer only basic services. Travelers should carry their own supplies of prescription drugs and preventive medicines.

Ambulance services are not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.

The U.S. Embassy does not pay medical bills . Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with the  Embassy of Uganda  to ensure the medication is legal in Uganda. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

• Air pollution is a significant problem in several major cities in Uganda. Consider the impact seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution may have on you, and consult your doctor before traveling if necessary.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety : Nighttime travel should be avoided whenever possible. Highway travel at night is particularly dangerous, including on the roads between Entebbe Airport and Kampala. The Embassy recommends caution on these roads and use of a reliable taxi service to and from the airport. With the exception of the Kampala-Entebbe airport road, U.S. Embassy employees are prohibited from driving after dark on roads outside the limits of cities and large towns. Alcohol is frequently a contributing factor in road accidents, particularly at night.

Pedestrians often walk in the roads and may not be visible to motorists. Large branches or rocks in the road sometimes indicate an upcoming obstruction or other hazards. Ugandan law requires that the drivers stop and exchange information and assist any person injured in an accident. Mob anger and violence against the driver perceived to be at fault may occur. In these instances, Ugandans often do not get out of their cars, but drive to the nearest police station to report the accident.

Road conditions in the rural areas are poor. The use of four-wheel drive vehicles is encouraged in Uganda, and vehicular accidents occur at a high rate. Masaka Highway has been identified as one of the most dangerous roads in the world.

Public Transportation : Most inter-city transportation in Uganda is by small van or large bus. Many drivers of these vehicles have little training, and some are reckless. Vans and buses are often poorly maintained, travel at high speeds, and are the most common vehicles involved in the many deadly single- and multi-vehicle accidents along Ugandan roads. Accident victims have included U.S. citizens traveling in vans and personal cars, as passengers on motorcycle taxis locally known as "boda bodas," and as pedestrians. U.S. Mission employees and their dependents are prohibited from using boda bodas and matatus (minibus taxis) due to accident and crime risks. Large trucks on the highways are often overloaded with inadequately secured cargo and poor braking systems.

Visa applications are subject to approval; any person intending to travel to Uganda must apply online and have a Travel Authorisation/Visa Approval  Letter before embarking on their travel to Uganda as there are no visas on arrival.

Paper applications:

Visa applications cannot be expedited, thus, the onus is on the applicant to apply in good time in advance of travel.

Visit  https://www.visas.immigration.go.ug/#/check , enter your Passport No, Date of Birth and Application ID. If your visa has been approved it will state 'approved' and you can download your visa authorisation letter. 

I have previously visited Uganda and have been able to get a visa on arrival, is this still the case?

All applicants must apply for a visa using the above mentioned website in advance of travel. Applicants will not be allowed to board the flight to Entebbe without a Travel Authorization letter. 

I have previously visited your High Commission alone/as a group when submitting visa applications for you to manually process, do you still offer this service?

No. Whether you are travelling alone or as a group, each applicant must apply online through the above mentioned website in advance of travel.

Why does it say contact in Uganda is an 'invalid field'?

If applicants are completing this field and using a '+' sign when entering data such as a telephone number, they are advised to omit the '+' sign and write the full number, including relevant prefix, out.

On Step 3 when adding documents such as a copy of my passport, passport size photograph and vaccination certificate,  I'm  getting the error, 'file size is too big'?

There are many different websites and computer software, such as 'Microsoft Paint' and 'snipping tool', which can allow you to adjust the size of this file accordingly.

How long does it take to find out the outcome of my application?

The turnaround for a visa application can vary and is a case by case basis.  You may have your visa approved within three working days or you may be required to submit further documentation which can then mean this takes longer e.t.c There is no one answer!

How can  I  check the status of my application?

When wanting to check the status of my application, it does not allow me to select my year of birth which is prior to 1959?

Press the arrow allowing you to change your year of birth, select '1959', which should then close the scroll. Click the arrow again to change the year of birth and you should be able to correctly select the relevant date.

What happens if  I  am requested to add my documents?

Click 'Applications', 'manage my applications', fill in your information and select 'modify', adding the relevant document.

What does 'point of entry or where you want to have your visa personalised' mean?

This is where your fingerprints are taken and your visa sticker is put in your passport.

What happens once my visa is approved?

Download your approval letter and you can proceed to Entebbe to personalise your visa at the border.

REQUIREMENT FOR YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION CERTIFICATE

The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health is committed to protect the population from the risk of importing or further spreading Yellow Fever virus by establishing entry and exit requirement on Yellow Fever Vaccination for travellers. 

Proof of vaccination is often required for travellers arriving from countries with risk of Yellow Fever transmission and sometimes for travellers in transit through such countries.

Accordingly, in line with International Health Regulations, Uganda abides by World Health Assembly resolutions on the requirement for Yellow Fever vaccination for travellers, thus;

1. Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is a requirement for persons travelling from endemic countries         to Yellow Fever free countries.

2. It is not a requirement for travellers to receive booster does after the one-time vaccination which            gives lifelong protection.

LIST OF COUNTRIES WHOSE NATIONALS DO NOT REQUIRE TO PAY FORA VISA TO ENTER UGANDA:

In June 2016, The Republic of Uganda introduced the eVisa system to allow citizens of certain nationalities to apply online for a visa to enter the country.

Travellers are required to fill in the form and make a payment online. The application is internally reviewed and processed. The approved visa is sent by email to the traveller as soon as it is approved.

Visa on Arrival

Applications upon arrival are only available in emergency cases and in a limited number of airports.

Foreign travellers should be aware that waiting times of more than two hours should be expected. Travellers entering Uganda during peak holiday season should expect longer waiting times at immigration.

Uganda e-Visa Information

The Uganda e-Visa is an electronic visa introduced in 2016 by the Government of Uganda to facilitate the visa application process for foreign nationals.

The e-Visa system enables citizens from selected countries to apply for their visas for entry into Uganda online without physically visiting a Ugandan Embassy or any other diplomatic mission.

The Uganda e-Visa allows its holders to stay within the country for 90 days and comes in three different types; a single-entry visa , a multiple-entry visa (that allows entrance to Kenya and Rwanda as well), and a transit visa . The transit visa is the only exception and allows a 7-day visit .

Applicants must follow a simple 3-step online process that takes minutes to complete to receive the approved e-Visa to Uganda at their email address .

Uganda e-Visa types

All applicants who have a valid passport and meet all requirements may travel to Uganda with 3 different types of electronic visas . See the available options ( described in detail below ) to choose the one that will be the best for your needs .

How to apply online? Luckily, it could not be more simple. All you have to do is use the panel located on this website's left-hand side and select the e-Visa type you want to apply for, then click the ' Apply Online ' button and start the actual application process .

Citizens of the eligible countries should then:

• Put all of the required data and travel information in the online application form . Use the passport information pages to provide the necessary data . Attach the supporting documents and make sure that your application does not contain any errors .
• Pay the handling electronic visa fee (99 Euro or 149 Euro) . Applicants can use their credit card/debit card, PayPal, PayU, or any other method of online payment that is available on our website.

Validity period

Single-entry (only Uganda) and multiple-entry permits (the East Africa region) are both valid for 90 days (three months) from the date of entering Uganda.

The online transit visa stays effective for 7 days and allows its holders to visit Uganda only for transit purposes . The validity period starts on the date of arrival .

The most essential condition for all travelers to meet is for their passport to be valid for at least 6 months . The 180 days of passport validity should extend beyond the date of arrival in Uganda.

Transit information

If you want to leave the airport's transit zone , you need to apply for an online transit visa first. This electronic visa type allows its holders to stay in Uganda for 7 days .

Requirements on arrival

All travelers that are citizens of countries listed as eligible for an e-Visa need only two essential documents that will be checked by the customs officials upon arrival.

The Government of Uganda introduced an online visa/permit application system with effect from 1st July 2016. The Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit Application System performs checks against law enforcement databases. 

All persons from non-visa-exempt countries intending to travel to Uganda for holiday, tourism, business, study, visit, and/or medical are required to apply and obtain a visa online.

• Choose: the application type (Visa or Permit), category (Ordinary, Multiple-Entry, Diplomatic and Official, Transit, East Africa Tourist Visa), and subcategory (single-entry, multiple-entry for 6 months)
• Fill the electronic form
• Add documents (Copy of recent passport size photograph, Copy of passport bio-data page, Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, Covid-19 Vaccination Certificate, Recommendation letter, Police clearance, etc.)

Once the application is submitted it will be studied by an Immigration Officer.

Travel authorization

• Upon submission, the applicant will receive a notification with an  application number  which he/she can use to track the application.
• The decision taken on the application will be sent electronically through the email provided by the applicant.
• If approved, an approval letter will be sent as an attachment to the email provided. This letter serves as a Travel authorization.
• Print it out and present it together with a valid passport /travel document of not less than 6 months' validity at the port of entry.
• This travel authorization does not guarantee entry into Uganda. Travellers will be subjected to secondary verification where necessary before a visa can be placed in the passport.

Application timeline

• All visas, permits and passes are approved within two (2) to three (3) working days, except in special circumstances where more documents and/or verification may be required.
• However, applicants are advised to apply at least five (5) working days before their intended date of travel.
• Applicants are advised to only submit their application in a period that falls within 3 months of their departure from Uganda. The validity of an approved E-Visa is three months starting from the issue date.

Types of visas

1. Visas to Uganda: Single entry visas for a maximum duration of 3 months and multiple entry visas. Any extensions of this period, can be applied for at the Immigration

Office in Kampala.

2. EAC Visas: The East Africa Tourist Visa allows travel between Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda with the same multiple entry visa. This visa is the result of a joint initiative made by the Heads of States of the respective partner countries to boost regional travel and create opportunities for tourists to explore the diversity of East Africa. Travelers from any country can obtain a multiple entry visa that will allow entry to the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, and the Republic of Uganda for tourism over period of 90 days. Please note that this visa does NOT grant entry into the United Republic of Tanzania, Burundi or South Sudan.

Information and eligibility

• Eligible Person : Tourist, no restrictions on country of origin
• Dependents : All persons must apply in their own right.
• Travel Documents : All tourists must have an official and genuine international passport, valid for not less than 6 months from the time of visa application.
• Visa Fees : 100 USD per visa
• Validity of Visa : 90 days
• Single or Multiple Entry : Multiple entry to all three countries
• Work or no Work : Work is not permitted on a vistor /tourist visa
• Visa Extension : An East Africa Tourist Visa cannot be extended.
• Country of Entry : The holder of the East Africa Tourist Visa must enter the region from the country that issued the visa and move within the two other countries without applying for another visa or paying another visa fee.
• Movement of persons : The holder shall also be allowed to move out of the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, and the Republic of Uganda and return without having to pay for another visa. This will only be applicable for the validity period of the visa (90 days from visa approval).

Requirements for obtaining a Uganda visa when traveling on government business

For non-Saudi Arabia nationals traveling on official Government business to Uganda;

• A Note Verbale from their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Diplomatic Mission accredited to Burundi, clearly stating the details of the traveling official, purpose of travel, host institution and period of stay in Uganda.
• There is no processing fee for this category of visa.
• Applications without the above supporting documents will not be processed
• The Consular Section at the Uganda Embassy is open to applicants for the assistance in their visa application, Monday to Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm only (except on Public Holidays in Uganda and the German).

Uganda e-Visa Information

The Uganda e-Visa is an electronic visa that grants the holder entry to the country. The e-Visa system was introduced on July 1, 2016.

The majority of travelers are eligible to apply for a Ugandan e-Visa, since it is available to all nationalities that cannot visit the country visa-free.

The e-Visa for Uganda is a requirement to enter Uganda for the purposes of tourism, attending conferences , visiting relatives, or medical treatment .

The ordinary online Uganda tourist visa permits the traveler to enter the country a single time . It is valid for a period of 90 days starting from the moment it is issued.

The Uganda transit e-Visa is a requirement for travelers passing through their country on the way to another destination.

Eligible travelers must complete the simple online Uganda visa application form, in which they must enter some basic personal data, passport details, and travel information.

The streamlined online e-Visa system facilitates the application process and eliminates the need to go to an embassy to obtain a Uganda visa.

Uganda e-Visa Requirments

In order to apply for an e-Visa, foreign nationals must meet the Uganda visa requirements .

The following items are needed to obtain a Uganda visa online:

• Valid passport that will not expire for 6 months or more
• Current email address to receive the approved e-Visa
• Credit or debit card to pay the fee

While completing the Uganda online e-Visa application form, applicants must provide the following supporting documents :

• Copy of the passport bio-data page
• Recent passport-size photograph
• Vaccination certificate for yellow fever

You may also need to provide proof of onward travel (such as a return ticket) and/or an invitation or cover letter explaining the reason for the visit.

Applicants for Uganda transit visas must submit a letter stating their final destination and the reason why they must transit through Uganda.

Once approved, it is a requirement to print confirmation of the e-Visa and present it at the Ugandan border along with the passport used in the application.

Once checked and approved by a border control officer , the visitor will be able to enter the country.

Complete the Uganda e-Visa online application

Enter the required details into the relevant fields of the Uganda e-Visa application form. This includes providing some personal information (name, date of birth, nationality, etc.), passport number and expiry date, and some contact details. Some information about the planned trip is also required.

Once the form has been filled in, attach the necessary supporting documents in a digital format (scanned). After this, the application is ready for submission.

Confirm payment of the Uganda e-Visa application fee

There is a small processing fee for the Uganda e-Visa. During the online application process, you will be prompted to enter the details of a valid credit or debit card to cover this fee.

Simply enter the relevant information when it is requested. The money will then be transferred to cover the Uganda e-Visa cost . This will allow you to submit the application for processing.

Receive the approved Uganda e-Visa

Once the Uganda e-Visa online application has been submitted, and processed, the approved visa is delivered to the traveler by email . It will be send to the account provided on the form.

After receiving the e-Visa, print a copy of the visa to bring to Uganda. It must be shown at border control to enter the country.

What are the requirements for obtaining an e-Visa for Uganda?

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

COVID-19 rules

Uganda’s Port Health Authority may check your temperature on arrival. If your temperature is above normal or you display COVID-19 symptoms, they may ask you to take a COVID-19 test.

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Uganda.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen. 

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to enter Uganda. Check which visa best fits your needs .

Applying for a visa

You apply online to Ugandan Immigration , attaching the required documents and certificates including, in most cases, a yellow fever vaccination certificate. The immigration authorities will email you a letter of authorisation including a barcode. You print out the letter to present on arrival, where border officials will issue your visa.

Alternatively you can take the letter to a Ugandan embassy and they will issue the visa.  

You can also apply online for an East African Tourist Visa . This costs 100 US dollars and allows multiple entries into Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda over 90 days.

Airport entry restrictions

Only passengers with valid tickets and airport officials are allowed into Entebbe International Airport’s terminal building.

Vaccination requirements

You must bring the yellow fever vaccination certificate you used to get your visa.

Uganda eVisa: Required documents

The government fee for the Uganda e-Visa is USD $51.50 .

Entry requirements and regulations for Uganda

There are currently no COVID-18 requirements to travel to Uganda.

Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit Application System

The Government of Uganda introduced an online visa/permit application system with effect from 1st July 2016. The Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit Application System performs checks against law enforcement databases. All travellers seeking admission to Uganda are required to obtain a visa using this system prior to being granted boarding. All persons intending to travel to Uganda for holiday, tourism,business, study, visit, and/or medical are required to apply and obtain a visa online. Applications should be filled at the following link:  https://visas.immigration.go.ug/ .  

Any person intending to enter into Uganda should do so only for lawful purposes and in accordance with national immigration laws, guidelines and formalities.

Foreign nationals intending to enter Uganda for purposes of employment should comply with requirements for expatriate employment in Uganda.

Visa Exemptions

Nationalities that do not require a Visa to enter Uganda:

*     COMESA : Angola, Eritrea, Malawi,Madagascar, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia, Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Zimbabwe

*    EAC:  Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya,Burundi, South Sudan

*   OTHERS : Antigua, Barbados, Fiji,Grenada, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Cyprus, Bahamas,Belize, Gambia, Jamaica, Malta, Singapore, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Any other exemption as may be specified on arrival.

How to Apply for a Visa

All persons intending to travel to Uganda for holiday, tourism, business, study, visit, and/or medical are required to apply and obtain a visa online. Applications should be filled at the following link:  https://visas.immigration.go.ug/ .

  Step-1: Choose the application type(Visa or Permit), category (Ordinary, Multiple-Entry, Diplomatic and Official,Transit, East Africa Tourist Visa), subcategory (single-entry, multiple-entry for 6-12 months, 12-24 months or 24-36 months)

 Step-2: Fill the electronic form

 Step-3: Add documents (Copy of recent passport size photograph, Copy of passport bio-data page, Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, Recommendation letter, Police clearance, etc.)

 Step-4: Submit

 Once the application is submitted it will be studied by an Immigration Officer. Please note that during the approval process additional information may be required. The new required information can be submitted electronically through  https://visas.immigration.go.ug/#/check .

TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION

Upon submission, the applicant will receive a notification with an application number which he/she can use to track the application. The decision taken on the application will be sent electronically through the email provided by the applicant. If approved, an approval letter will be sent as an attachment to the email provided. This letter serves as a Travel authorization. Print it out and present it together with a valid passport /travel document of not less than 6 months' validity at the port of entry.

This travel authorization does not guarantee entry into Uganda. Travellers will be subjected to secondary verification where necessary before a visa can be placed in the passport.

APPLICATION TIMELINE

All visas, permits and passes are approved within two (2) to three (3) working days, except in special circumstances where more documents and/or verification may be required.However, applicants are advised to apply at least five (5) working days before their intended date of travel.

Applicants are advised to only submit their application in a period that falls within 3 months of their departure from Uganda. The validity of an approved E-Visa is three months starting from the issue date.

  TYPES OF VISAS

1) Visas to Uganda

The Embassy issues single entry visas for a maximum duration of 3 months and multiple entry visas for a maximum duration of 6 months. Any extensions of this period, can be applied for at the Immigration Office in Kampala.

2) EAC Visas

The East Africa Tourist Visa allows travel between Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda with the same multiple entry visa. This visa is the result of a joint initiative made by the Heads of States of the respective partner countries to boost regional travel and create opportunities for tourists to explore the diversity of East Africa. Travelers from any country can obtain a multiple entry visa that will allow entry to the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, and the Republic of Uganda for tourism over period of 90 days. Please note that this visa does NOT grant entry into the United Republic of Tanzania, Burundi or South Sudan.

INFORMATION AND ELIGIBILITY

Eligible Person : Tourist, no restrictions on country of origin

Dependents : All persons must apply in their own right.

Travel Documents : All tourists must have an official and genuine international passport, valid for not less than 6 months from the time of visa application.

Visa Fees : 100 USD per visa

Validity of Visa : 90 days

Single of Multiple Entry : Multiple entry to all three countries

Work or no Work : Work is not permitted on a vistor /tourist visa

Visa Extension : An East Africa Tourist Visa cannot be extended.

Country of Entry : The holder of the East Africa Tourist Visa must enter the region from the country that issued the visa and move within the two other countries without applying for another visa or paying another visa fee.

  Movement of persons : The holder shall also be allowed to move out of the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, and the Republic of Uganda and return without having to pay for another visa. This will only be applicable for the validity period of the visa (90 days from visa approval).

  3) Payment for Visas

All applications and payment must be made online through the following link:  https://visas.immigration.go.ug/ . 

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS MADE FOR PAYMENTS MADE INTO THE EMBASSY BANK ACCOUNT.

4) Issuance of visas at Uganda Missions Abroad (Embassies):

E-visas and e-permits are centrally approved but can be personalized at Point of Entry or Missions Abroad that have been equipped with the e-immigration system. The Uganda Embassy provides this personalization visa service for travellers that prefer not to receive their visas upon arrival in Uganda. This service is offered between the hours of 10:00 - 15:00 hrs.

5)   REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING A UGANDA VISA WHEN TRAVELING ON GOVERNMENT BUSINESS

The Uganda embassy shall still retain the responsibility of processing all diplomatic and official visa applications.

Government officials traveling on official business must submit visa applications with the following supporting documents:

  For Government officials;

A Note Verbale from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly indicating the details of the traveling official, purpose of travel, host institution and period of stay in Uganda. 

For non- citizens traveling on official Government business to Uganda;

A Note Verbale from their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Diplomatic Mission, clearly stating the details of the traveling official, purpose of travel, host institution and period of stay in Uganda. 

There is no processing fee for this category of visa.

Applications without the above supporting documents will not be processed

Applicants are requested to forward documents with cover Notes Verbales to the Uganda Embassy between the hours of 09:00 to 14:00 hrs, Monday-Friday

The Consular Section at the Uganda Embassy is open to applicants for the collection of their visa stickers  having received approval from the above website or inquiries, Monday to Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm only  (except on Public Holidays in Uganda and the United States).

The Embassy shall not be responsible for applications processed through any other website The Government of Uganda will NOT be responsible for any loss of funds or extra expenditure incurred as a result of using the unofficial site. Paper applications will not be processed and may result in delays.

Visitors traveling to Uganda are warned about the following fake websites  https://www.evisaforuganda.com/index  ,  http://www.uganda-evisa.com/ ,  www.traveltouganda.org ,  www.evisaforuganda.com ,   https://www.ugandaimmigration.org ,  https://www.traveldocs.com/travel-services/uganda-e-visa  and many others which not only fraudulently claim to be application portalsfor e-visas to Uganda, but also charge incorrect amounts in addition to hefty "processing fees" ranging from $110 to $200. 

The correct fee is $50 US Dollars.

How to spot a fraudulent E-visa website:

1.     The web site only has the following visa options:

• Tourist Visas
• Transit Visas
• Multiple Entry Visas

Unlike  the official website ,  https://www.visas.immigration.go.ug , which  provides for the following options:

• Visa For Diplomatic and Official Passport Holders
• Uganda Ordinary/Tourist Visa
• East Africa Tourist Visa
• Transit Visa
• Multiple-Entry Visas
• Entry (Work Permits)
• Dependant Passes
• Student Passes
• Special Passes and Certificates of Residence
• Dual Citizenship

 2.     Please note that the official website bears the Ugandan Coat of Arms and DCIC Logo.

The fake website has three steps which are basically as follows:

• Apply online
• Make an online payment and
• Check your email for feedback.

There are four steps on  the official application website  which are;

• Selecting the application type
• Fill the form
• Add documents
• Make online payments (only visas)

Please make sure that you or your clients do not submit a visa application through these fake websites. The  officialapplication portal  through which all online applications, including visas to Uganda are made is  https://www.visas.immigration.go.ug/ .

Changes to the accredited employer work visa (aewv).

The Government is making changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa. Find out what these changes mean for employers and visa applicants.

The Government is making changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

What is changing for people with an AEWV

If you currently have an AEWV, these changes could affect how long you can stay before you need to spend time outside New Zealand or your eligibility to be granted a further AEWV.

If you applied for your first AEWV before 21 June 2023 and are in an ANZSCO level 4 and 5 job paying at or above the required AEWV wage rate, and currently hold a three year AEWV, you will no longer be able to access the maximum time of five years.

If you are in an ANZSCO level 4 and 5 job on a pathway to residence, you will not be affected by these changes.

If you apply for a further AEWV on or after 7 April 2024, you will have to meet the updated criteria. If you are in an ANZSCO level 4 and 5 job you may not be able to stay and work in New Zealand for the maximum time of five years.

How long you can stay on an AEWV

What is changing for new AEWV applications

There are now higher work experience and qualification requirements, a standard of English for people applying to work in roles assessed as ANZSCO skill level 4 and 5, and a shorter stay in New Zealand if you are working in specific roles.

New minimum skill requirement

If you are applying for an AEWV you will need to show evidence of your work experience or qualifications. This is in addition to the skills and qualifications that your employer has identified as necessary for the job and your employer will need to check you meet the skill requirements before they offer you the job.

Unless your role is on the Green List and meets the Green List role requirements, or is paid least twice the median wage, you must now have:

• at least 3 years’ relevant work experience, or
• a relevant qualification at level 4 or above of the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).

Evidence of your qualification must be accompanied by an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) if it is below Bachelor’s degree level.

To meet the work experience requirement, you must provide evidence proving you did the work — you cannot include documents that you wrote.

Accredited Employer Work Visa

Minimum standard of English

If the job is ANZSCO level 4 or 5, you need to show that you can speak and understand English.

This requirement will not apply to current applications, or to people travelling as the partner or child of AEWV applicant.

English language requirements for the Accredited Employer Work Visa

Shorter visa length and stay in New Zealand for some jobs

For ANZSCO level 4 and 5 jobs paying at or above the required AEWV wage rate, the maximum visa length for an AEWV is reduced to 2 years, with the ability to apply for one more year with a new Job Check.

The total time you can stay in New Zealand (also called a maximum continuous stay) on one or more AEWVs is reduced to 3 years. When you get to the end of your maximum continuous stay you will need to leave New Zealand for a specified amount of time — normally 12 months — before you can apply for another AEWV.

These changes will apply to anyone who applied for their first AEWV on or after 7 April 2024 or before 21 June 2023.

Some ANZSCO level 4 and 5 jobs will not be affected by these changes, including those:

• on the Green List
• in transport and care sector agreements, and on a pathway to residence
• earning 1.5 times the median wage.

The length of an AEWV and maximum continuous stay for people in ANZSCO level 1 to 3 jobs will remain 5 years.

What is changing for employers

The requirements employers must meet to hire migrants on the AEWV have changed.

There are now more requirements at the accreditation and Job Check stages and during the accreditation period.

There are also higher work experience and qualification requirements for AEWV applicants, a standard of English for people applying to work in roles assessed as ANZSCO skill level 4 and 5, and a shorter stay in New Zealand for those working in specific roles.

Meeting your AEWV accredited employer obligations

Ensure an applicant is suitably qualified and skilled

Employers must now take reasonable steps to ensure migrants are suitably skilled before sending them a job token. Employers will need to check that the migrant has the skills they have identified as necessary for the job, as well as the new minimum skill requirement being introduced as part of these changes.

These requirements must be met for all Job Check applications.

Employers who are accredited or re-accredited from 7 April 2024 will need to take reasonable steps to ensure migrant workers meet skill requirements as part of their accreditation obligations.

Check your migrant is suitably qualified

Employ migrants for at least 30 hours

From 7 April 2024, new AEWVs will be issued with a condition requiring you to employ migrants for at least 30 hours per week.

If you do not provide at least 30 hours a week's employment we can revoke your accreditation.

Grounds for suspending accreditation being expanded

Employers being actively investigated for any breach of accreditation may have their accreditation suspended. Previously, suspension was only an option for breaches of some accreditation requirements.

Now using ANZSCO skill levels

Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) skill levels are being introduced into the assessment of AEWV applications.

Check the ANZSCO list

Suitable and available New Zealanders

There is now a definition of 'suitable and available New Zealanders'.

Employers will be required to declare that nobody who applied for the job met the definition. If an employer indicates that there were suitable New Zealanders available, the Job Check will be declined.

Advertise a job and engage with Work and Income

Extra rules for ANZSCO level 4 and 5 jobs

Employers wanting to fill jobs at ANZSCO level 4 and 5 now need to:

• advertise for 21 days, rather than 14,
• engage with Work and Income, and
• declare in the Job Check why any New Zealanders who applied were not hired.

Employers must engage with Work and Income before making their Job Check application.

If you did not hire a New Zealand applicant who met the definition of suitable and available, your Job Check will be declined.

Tell Immigration New Zealand when a migrant leaves their job

A new accreditation requirement is being introduced for employers.

If a worker on an AEWV leaves your employment a month or more before their visa expires, you must tell Immigration New Zealand (INZ) within 10 working days. If you fail to do this we may revoke or suspend your accreditation.

This change will not apply to existing accredited employers until they renew or upgrade their accreditation.

Franchisee accreditation changing late-2024

Franchisee accreditation will end later in 2024. Franchisee employers will be able to apply for standard, high-volume, or triangular employment accreditation, depending on their circumstances.
