Orchha 2 Day Itinerary

May 24, 2019 by Nitin Singhal 26 Comments

I spent a weekend in Orchha and Jhansi exploring forts, old temples, river, and museum. Want to know how I managed to see all these things in just 2 days? Here is my Orchha 2 day itinerary for you. #Orchha #Madhyapradesh #India #itinerary

Many people don’t have the luxury to take long leaves from their business or office. They regularly use weekend or long weekend trips to quench their travel needs. If you are one of them, then Orchha is an ideal destination for you. The medieval town of Orchha is located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Orchha being just 450 kilometres away from Delhi is a perfect weekend getaway destination.

Day – 1

Sleepless in train.

I had boarded the train on time and had planned to sleep all through my journey. I had chosen the 2AC ticket for better comfort and experience. But it was not meant to be. Both my co-passenger were snoring loud. And the people were constantly disturbing the curtain all night. I could not get a single minute of sleep.

The train reached Jhansi almost an hour late. I took a shared cab and reached Orchha at around 8:30 AM.

Disappointing breakfast

As I was awake without eating anything for close to 12 hours, I was starving. I took a seat at Ram Raja Restaurant which was near the Ram Raja Temple. I took a look at the menu and I was shocked to see the prices. For a place as small and shabby as any other small dhabas in the country, the prices were equivalent to those of mid-sized restaurant of Delhi. The menu was tailor-made for foreigners and had dishes like scrambled eggs and porridge. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and it was pathetic.

I had read many reviews online which had stated that food was terrible in Orchha and they were not wrong.

Street view of the medieval town of Orchha with Ram Raja Temple in the background

Orchha has the distinction of one of those places in India which receive more foreign than domestic tourists. Many small restaurants or rather I should say, Dhabas with English breakfast and high prices have opened all over Orchha to milk the cash cow. They prepare dishes for the foreigners which fail miserably in taste for Indians.

If you are Indian and reaching Orchha early morning, I would suggest you have breakfast at Jhansi railway station. There is Comesum restaurant which serves good quality Indian food.

Somehow I ate the sandwich and then moved to a small Indian dhaba nearby and had Aloo paranthas and curd. Though the taste was average, it was at least digestible.

Group of Cenotaphs

After breakfast, I started walking towards the Group of Cenotaphs or Chhatris. I was not getting any internet signal and I had to ask locals for the direction. It was strange that in a small town like Orchha, many people did not know about the Chhatris. Finally, a policeman gave me the direction and I reached at Cenotaphs. The Bundela kings and their families are buried in the 15 cenotaphs. The architecture was beautiful. Cenotaphs with close proximity to the Betwa river provides a picturesque setting.

Betwa River

Afterwards, I sat on a boulder near the overwater bridge and did nothing but listened to the placid sound of the river’s current for almost half an hour. I saw many locals taking a bath in this serene river. Kayaking and River Rafting are also operated there. I skipped those since I was not sure about the safety measures by the operators.

Orchha Fort

I checked into my hotel, Hotel Sunset, and rested for close to an hour and then proceeded to visit Orchha Fort. The Orchha Fort was my primary reason for visiting Orchha. Orchha Fort has multiple palaces like Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, and Rai Parveen Mahal but the Jahangir Mahal is the most well-maintained and enthralling. Jahangir Mahal was built in the Mughal style architecture in the honour of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. I loved everything about the palace, be its symmetrical style structure or beautiful arches or rustic old building. It’s a no-brainer that Jahangir Palace is the most beautiful and worth visiting attraction of Orchha.

Jahangir Mahal architecture

I also visited other palaces and monuments of the fort complex but except the murals on the interior walls of the Raja Mahal, there is nothing much to praise about. The murals of Hindu Gods were captivating and were a saving grace to an otherwise abandoned building.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Chaturbhuj Temple is located close to Ram Raja Temple. It is dedicated to Radha Krishna. The temple is unique due to its pine cone shaped tall spires. As entered the temple through its huge door, I saw the idol of Radha Krishna in front of me. A couple of people approached me and asked me if I wanted to go up. I nodded and they opened the door which opened to stairs. A person went along with me to show me around. The stairs were steep and narrow and I climbed up and stepped down very carefully. If you are not careful, you can get a serious injury. The views from the top of the temple were amazing. After spending some time at the top, I descended down and paid the guide Rs 50 for his effort.

Struggle for Lunch

It was around 3 PM and I had started to get hungry and my hunt for a good meal began. I looked around near Ram Raja Temple hoping to find a decent restaurant but could not find any. Then, I thought of filling my stomach with some snacks. I ate a Chole Samosa and Maggi noodles. Chole Samosa was pretty good and delicious but the noodles were bad. The noodles were too salty and I couldn’t believe that someone could even mess up the Maggi noodles.

Laxminarayan Temple

Laxminarayan Temple is around a kilometre away from Ram Raja Temple. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to Laxmi Narayan. The guard outside the temple asked me for the Orchha Fort ticket. The Orchha Fort ticket includes the entry to Laxminaryan temple. The temple was embellished with the magnificent paintings on the walls and ceilings of the halls. The episodes of Ramayana, and of Lord Krishna were depicted in paintings. I took stairs to go up to the top of the temple. The views from there were amazing. I was the only one at the temple amidst the tranquil atmosphere.

Dozed off till night

It was around 5 PM and I had visited all the attractions of Orchha barring Ram Raja Temple. The Ram Raja temple was closed at that time and was to be opened at 8 in the night. I was tired after going up and down multiple times and the sleepless previous night had started to show its effect. I went to my hotel, set the alarm of 8 PM and slept in no time.

First satisfying meal in Orchha

I woke up at 8 and this time I wanted to have a full meal. I asked the hotel owner to suggest me the restaurant which serves authentic Indian food. He suggested me to go to Rimjhim dhaba. When I asked him for the directions, he offered me to drop there to which I obliged. The Rimjhim dhaba was dhaba in every way with cheap dirt price, plastic chairs, and dull ambience. At least it didn’t pretend to be a mid-budget restaurant by making cosmetic changes to the establishment and shooting up the prices, like many of the dhabas in Orchha have done. I would give them full marks for it. I ordered Mutter Panner and Tawa Rotis and had my first fulfilling meal.

Ram Raja Temple

The Ram Raja Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and is the only temple in the country where Rama is worshipped as the king and not god. Apart from this fact, it is not much different from the millions of other temples of the country. I was asked to leave my belt outside the temple since leather things are not allowed. Photography is also not allowed inside the temple but you can take the mobile with you. I spent 10-15 minutes inside the temple and then went back to the hotel.

Day – 2

I checked out of the hotel at 9 AM and left for Jhansi.

Jhansi Fort

From the Jhansi railway station bus stop, I took another auto to Jhansi Fort . I had to deposit my bag outside since it had eatery items. I was allowed to take a water bottle. The fort is not as beautiful as Gwalior Fort or Amer Fort. The important points and structures are marked but no detailed descriptions are provided. It took me a little over two hours to explore the fort. I specifically liked the Jhansi fort for the magnificent views of the Jhansi city.

Breakfast Snacks – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

I had left the Orchha without taking breakfast due to the poor quality of food, hoping to eat near the Jhansi Fort. But there were no restaurants near the fort, just some stalls selling snacks and fruits. I first ate patty and Soda Shikanji which were decent in taste. Then, I tried Gol Guppas which were pretty bad. As I walked towards the Govt. Museum, I saw a stall selling omelette. I tried one and it was awful, worse than the grilled sandwich I ate in Orchha. That summed up my food experience in Orchha.

Govt museum

The Govt. museum is hardly a kilometre away from the Jhansi. A dinosaur statue welcomed me to the museum. The museum has various sections exhibiting the collection of archaeological artefacts of Gupta periods, Jain statues, weapons, oil paintings, and portraits. A section is dedicated to Rani Laxmibai and her heroics. I liked the museum but I had already seen archaeological artefacts, Jain statues, and weapons before in many different museums. So naturally, I was not very enthusiastic about it. The Rani Lakshmibai section was interesting as well as informative.

St. Jude’s Shrine

As I still had some time left before my train to Delhi, I spent some time at St. Jude’s Shrine. Since it was afternoon, the church was empty. Apart from me, there was only a single person who was praying to Jesus. As is generally the case with the religious places, the atmosphere was placid. I spent 15 minutes there and then took an auto to the railway station.

prayer hall of St. Jude's Shrine

I would not say I had an amazing trip. I couldn’t sleep whole night on the train, struggled with a good meal, and was disappointed that some of the attractions were not maintained properly. But I had some amazing moments as well. I loved each and every moment I spent at Jahangir Mahal admiring its beautiful architecture. I also enjoyed the tranquillity of the Betwa river and the wonderful murals and views at Laxminarayan temple. On the whole, I would say I had a satisfactory trip.

To be very honest, it’s the most practical and honest narration of Orchha and its vicinity. Indian tourists mostly go to the town to visit Ram Raja Temple otherwise the local economy is practically foreign tourists centric.

I have never been to India before. Any country I travel to I like to know what destinations make for good day trips. This appears to be one of them. I especially like Jahangir Maha, it would make for a great photographer backdrop. Thanks for sharing.

June 1, 2019 at 1:40 pm

I hope you visit India someday. India is beautiful and has everything that a traveller looks for from beaches, temples, snow-clad hilly regions, historical ruins to the royal forts and palaces. Jahangir Mahal is the most visited attraction of Orchha. And you are right, it is a great spot for photography.

A lot see I guess ! .. Sounds like a great place.. Loved the picture of laxmi Narayana temple ..Great post and unique location!

June 1, 2019 at 1:37 pm

Thanks, RN. Orchha is an off-beat destination and its half a millennium old temples are the biggest highlight.

Orchha is thankfully climbing the charts as a tourist destination in MP. When i visited couple of years back, it was reeking with urine odour everywhere and it was a major put off for me. I hope you didn’t face that.

June 1, 2019 at 1:35 pm

I didn’t face anything like that. Surely, it has a bit of village kind of ambience but didn’t experience any urine smell. Maybe, lot has been done in cleaning the Orchha to make it a tourist friendly

It sounds like you had a good time – even if it was a challenge to find a good meal!

Never been to India, and this is a great tip to visit this place. I never decided which site in India we will visit if time permits us to do so. But as you mentioned for the food that can be hard for us as everyone in my family is a very picky eater. Thanks for sharing and letting us aware that Orchha existed!

June 1, 2019 at 1:31 pm

April, India is a food paradise. I only had difficulty finding the good food in Orchha, In most of India, you would find the wide-variety of mouth-watering food.

This is a good two day plan you have made here. Is two days really enough to cover Orchha or would you recommend more?

June 1, 2019 at 1:28 pm

Two days are more than sufficient to travel Orchha. Since all the attractions are close to each other, you can in-fact, cover everything in a day, as I did. And spend the second day visiting nearby Jhansi city.

' src=

May 28, 2019 at 1:05 am

You certainly packed a lot into two days! The places you visited looked interesting, especially Chaturburj Temple.

' src=

May 27, 2019 at 11:17 pm

It is interesting how people don’t know about attractions around them, I too have come across that plenty of times. #Food that is a must, disappointing food is a big no no for me but glad you finally got something satisfiying to eat.

June 1, 2019 at 1:25 pm

It was very strange that people did not know a place just 200 metres away from them. Food exploration is also a big part of a trip and it was disappointing that I didn’t find any authentic delicious food.

Thank you for sharing your weekend getaway experience. I loved how you took time out by the river … “nothing but listened to the placid sound of the river’s current for almost half an hour. Sometimes we can run from one thing to the next without taking time to really connect with our surroundings.

Thanks, Karletta. Sometimes the best thing to do is not to do anything.

It looks like you managed to have a good time sightseeing, even with a bad start. It’s a shame about the quality of the food though – no one wants that!!

June 1, 2019 at 1:20 pm

Yes Katie, I had a nice experience of Orchha. You can’t expect every trip to go as you have planned. Sometimes, you face obstacles but you should be able to brave it out and try to enjoy the trip.

What a fascinating looking place. I’ve been to India several times already but not actually heard of Orchha. I do hate too when they served terrible overpriced food for tourists, I come across that a lot. Love the look of Jhansi Fort.

June 1, 2019 at 1:16 pm

Sarah, you won’t believe that I have lived all my life in Delhi and I didn’t know till 6 months ago that there exists a place by the name of Orchha just 450 kilometres away from me. It is so offbeat that many of the Indians even don’t know about it.

It does look like there is a lot to see in Orchha. I think I would like to visit the Chaturbhuj Temple. I also think I would take your suggestions on where to eat if so many restaurants are below standard.

Khajuraho Trip, Orchha Trip

KHAJURAHO ITINERARY FOR 3 DAYS COMBINED WITH ORCHHA

Khajuraho & Orchha Tour is one of the most perfect short trips, which can be easily planned for just 2-3 days. Here, I am sharing a perfect Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 days combined with Orchha, which covers entire guidelines on how to reach, where to stay, places to visit, trip cost etc, which will help in planning a beautiful and short trip to Khajuraho & Orchha.

ABOUT KHAJURAHO

Khajuraho is one of the most popular historical destinations of India. It is famous for its gigantic and magnificent temples built by Chandela Dynasty between the 10 th  – 13 th Century. Khajuraho Temples are built in Hinduism and Jainism style. Originally there were 85 temples spread across roughly 20 sq km area. Now it is reduced to 25 temples spread across 6 sq km area. Khajuraho Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hence, highly preserved.

The most famous temple of Khajuraho is  Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are other temples as well dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Sun God and Jain Tirthankaras. The entire temple region is divided into three parts – Eastern Group of Temples, Western group of Temples and Southern Group of Temples.

Western Group of Temples among all is the largest area with maximum temples and most visited. The most mesmerising thing about these gigantic temples is the way intricate carvings depicting various human emotions are sculpted on its exteriors. This also surprises me about the excellence of fine art and architecture around that time.  The beauty of these Temples cannot be described in words and one can only understand it, after paying a visit. This place attracts a huge number of visitors not only from India but also from abroad.

Trip to Khajurahu is always clubbed with a visit to Panna National Park , Raneh Waterfall and Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary because they are very close to Khajuraho.

Its partially ruined forts and the very famous Ram Raja Temple, which is the only temple in India where Lord Ram is worshipped in his King form, gives a sneak peak of the history of this place.

KHAJURAHO ITINERARY FOR 3 DAYS IN DETAIL

Day 1: reaching khajuraho, western group of temples, khajuraho temple light & sound show.

As we belong to the Northern part of India, Khajuraho is just a 5 – 6 hour road drive. We left early morning to avoid day time traffic. After reaching Khajuraho, we checked into our Hotel – Radisson Jass Hotel and relaxed for some time. We then grabbed lunch at the hotel’s restaurant only. After lunch, we went to see the magnificent Khajuraho Temples .

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Western Group of Temples

We decided to visit the Western Group of Temples , which are the biggest, most popular and the most beautiful ones. If one has visited the Western group of Temples, then the Eastern Group of Temples and other Jain and Hindu temples will not appeal much as the best has already been seen. The Western Group of Temples was a short brisk walk (15 mins) from our Hotel. You can also hire an auto for the same. Do not take your personal car to visit the temples, as lanes closer to the temples are narrow and therefore one can get stuck in traffic. After reaching the temple area, we bought tickets from the booth beside the entry gate. Price was Rs 40/Person for Indians and Rs 600 (8 US$)/Person for foreigners.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Upon entry, we were totally taken aback by the view the place had to offer. It felt like we have entered some different era. We were totally blown away by the beauty of these gigantic huge Temples all around and the enormous well maintained gardens and lawns.

Khajuraho Temples

One by one, we covered all the temples – Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Lakshman Temple, Vishwanath Temple, Chitragupt Temple, Devi Mandap, Varaha Mandap etc at this premises admiring each and every temple, checking the intricate craftwork done on them, the richness in the entire structure and the magnitude of the grandeur of the whole area. We also enjoyed the wonderful sunset here.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Light and Sound Show

On our way back, we saw the banner of Light and Sound Show . As there is not much to do in Khajuraho in the evenings, so we bought tickets for the same. It was Rs 250/Person for Indians and Rs 700 (9.5 US$)/Person for foreigners. Timing of Light and Sound Show is from 7:30 pm to 8:25 pm. The entire show was in the lawn right next to the temples. There were digital lights and narration along with music depicting the history of Khajuraho Temples. Overall it was an interesting show and also a nice way to understand the history of these temples.

Light & Sound Show Khajuraho

After the show finished, we went for a stroll in the nearby area and spotted Café Raja . We loved the ambience and food there. If interested in Indian food then you can try Badri Seth Marwari Bhoj . Later, we went back to the Hotel and relaxed.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

  • 05:00 AM: Leaving for Khajuraho
  • 12:00 PM: Reaching Khajuraho
  • 02:00 PM: Lunch at Hotel Radisson
  • 04:00 PM: Visit to the Western Group of Temples
  • 07:30 PM: Light and Sound Show

Day 2: Leaving Khajuraho, Raneh Fall, Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary, Panna National Park, Pandav Fall, reaching Orchha

Raneh Fall, Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary and Panna National Park are some of the attractions nearby Khajuraho. Right after breakfast, we checked out from our hotel in Khajuraho and went to see the Raneh Waterfall .

Raneh Waterfall

Raneh Waterfall is just 20 kms from Khajuraho and takes only 40 mins to reach by Car. One can also hire auto/taxi from Khajuraho to reach here.

Raneh Fall

Entry price was Rs 700 (9.5 US$) for 4 wheeler and Rs 400 (5.5 US$) for an auto plus an additional Rs 100 (1.5 US$) for a guide. Hiring a guide is compulsory here. Also known as the  Mini Grand Canyon of India – Raneh Waterfall was spectacular. The canyons at Raneh Falls were made from molten lava millions of years ago and were a treat to the eyes. We saw the Ken River surrounded by rocks forming different hues of shiny dolomite, quartz and granite. Walking through these canyons was an amazing experience. It is said that the best time to visit Raneh Fall is during the rainy season – July to September, when the water flows from 5 different points, giving a perfect scenery kind of a view like that on the postcards.

Ken River - Raneh Waterfall Khajuraho

Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary

Attached to Raneh Fall is Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary , which leads you inside the jungle. Sadly we didn’t see any Ghariyals (Crocodiles) there but we did see deers, rabbits, Nilgae (Antelopes) etc in the jungle area.

Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary

Panna National Park

After spending some time here, we went to Panna National Park (Panna Tiger Reserve Entry Gate Malda), which is 25 kms from Raneh Fall, which took us roughly 30 mins to reach. Park entry was Rs 200 (2.5 US$)/Car. We did not spot many animals here (probably because of the timing). We also heard that there are hardly any Tigers left at Panna National Park, (just 5-10 left) as all were killed by poachers in the past, and so chances of spotting them are very rare.

If you want to spot animals then you can go for morning Safari Tour which starts from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., charges for Jeep Rs 1000/Jeep (capacity 6 people) from Khajuraho. We were not morning people; hence we decided to skip it.

Panna National Park

Pandav Fall

We went to Pandav Fall , which was in the interiors, around 8 kms. Park entry includes entry for this place as well. One needs to climb down around 300 rocky stairs to reach the waterfall base. It is a hidden gem, a place in the middle of nowhere. It is said that the Pandavas had rested in these caves during their exile since the falls have been anmed after them. The sight is really beautiful and the lake appears green due to the surrounding lush green jungle.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

After the visit, we went straight to Orchha as it was a 5 hour drive from here.  We stopped at a Dhaba (Roadside Eatery) for lunch in between. After reaching Orchha, we checked into our Hotel – Amar Mahal, had dinner and slept.

One can also plan to stay at Panna National Park for a day at Taj Safari Lodge , if budget is not an issue. This sprawling 5 star property with stone cottages, excellent services and private jungle area is a hidden treasure in the middle of the jungle. Tariff starts from Rs 25000/- per day. There is another very good property right at the entry of Panna Tiger Reserve Madla Gate – MPT Jungle Camp.

Day 3: Orchha – Ram Raja Mandir, Orchha Ford Complex (Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal) and Cenotaphs Orchha (royal Chattris from Betwa River Kanchan Ghat)

There is not much to do in Orchha apart from visiting the two major attractions here: Ram Raja Mandir and Orchha Fort Complex.

Ram Raja Mandir/Chaturbhuj Temple/Laxminarayan Temple

After having a heavy breakfast at the Hotel, we went to visit the auspicious Ram Raja Mandir , also known as Orchha Temple , which is just a 10 mins walk from Amar Mahal . As the name suggests, it is the only temple in India where lord is worshipped in his king form. This temple attracts thousands of devotees every year from around the world. You can also visit Chaturbhurj Temple and Laxminarayan Temple , which is very close to Raja Ram Mandir.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Orchha Fort

After paying homage to the temple, we went to Orchha Fort , which is also just a 10 mins walk from Ram Raja Mandir. Orchha Fort is a big complex, consisting of various palaces and temples. The main ones are the Jahangir Mahal , Raja Mahal and Rai Praveen Mahal over looking river Betwa.

Orchha Fort

Sunset at Orchha

When it was close to sunset we went to the riverside area. One can also go for boating. On crossing the river to the other side one can witness the amazing view of 14 Chattris (Cenotaphs), which were built by the Bundela Rulers. Apart from boating, other activities like rafting and kayaking are also available.

Betwa River - Orchha

Post this visit, we grabbed some food. There are various options to choose from. We quite relished the food at our Hotel restaurants so we went there only. Next day we checked out from the Hotel and this ends our 3 days getaway to Khajuraho, Orchha with Panna National Park.

If you have one more day in Orchha then you can plan to visit Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary and Orchha Bird Sanctuary.

The Best One Day in Orchha Itinerary (India)

The Best One Day in Orchha Itinerary (India)

' data-src=

Going on an Orchha trip and wanting to know how to spend a day in Orchha? Below you will find my one-day Orchha itinerary to help you plan your amazing trip.

Orchha is a lovely medieval town on the bank of the Betwa River. The town is bursting with ancient forts, beautifully tiled temples and royal tombs. Also, famous for the Ram Raja Temple, the only temple in the world where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king.

Rudra Pratap Singh founded this UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 16th century, and the town served as the capital of Bundelkhand from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Orchha means “hidden,” and the town is still hidden from tourists. As a result, this town is ideal for tourists who dislike tourist hotspots.

Many tourists choose Orchha as a stopover between Agra and Khajuraho, which I did several times when travelling with groups. I genuinely admire the slow and peaceful lifestyle of the Orchha people.

If you have never visited a small town in India, Orchha will give you a wonderful experience. I planned this one-day Orchha itinerary, but I recommend staying for two or more days.

Here is my one day Orchha itinerary.

Table of Contents

Things To Do In Orchha

One day orchha itinerary, start by visiting betwa river.

Betwa River at Orchha with stones. Orchha Itinerary

Orchha’s Betwa River is a beautiful rocky river, only a 2-minute walk away from the Orchha Fort Complex. You can easily spend a couple of hours sitting on the river’s bank and watching the surroundings. The river is well-known for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Sunrise at Betwa River.

The Betwa River also offers rafting and kayaking opportunities. Don’t forget to cross the bridge and get to the other side of the river to capture an outstanding shot of the Chhatris (cenotaphs). After spending some time at the Betwa River, proceed to the Group of Cenotaphs (Chhatris).

Timing:- 24 Hours

Duration of Visit:- 30 Minutes.

Admire The Group of Cenotaphs (Chhatris)

Group of Canotaphs or Chatris with people of Betwa River Ghat, This is one of the best thing to do in Orchha.

The Chhatris of Orchha are a series of cenotaphs built in honour of the king and queen on the banks of the Betwa River. There are 14 chhatris with gardens on either side. All are nicely preserved and kept up.

These chhatris are ideal for spending time wandering around, admiring the magnificent architecture, and capturing some amusing photos.

After admiring the architecture and surroundings of the chhatris, we proceeded to the Orchha Fort Complex. You will arrive at the Orchha Fort ticket counter in 7 minutes.

Timing:- 9 Am – 6 Pm

Duration of Visit:- 30 Min – 1-hr

Visit the Orchha Fort Complex( (Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal)

Jahangir Mahar Back Side.

The most prominent and important sight in Orchha Town is the Orchha Fort, which you don’t want to skip from your itinerary. Rudra Pratap Singh, the Bundela Rajput king, built the fort in the 16th century.

The fort contains various palaces and monuments, but the most beautiful architectural treasures are Jahangir Mahal and Raja Mahal (Raj Mandir).

Admire Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal inside Orchha Fort Complex, Orchha Itinerary.

Jahangir Palace is the most attractive in the whole complex because of its excellent Mughal and Rajputana architecture. Raja Bir Singh Deo built it in 1605 to welcome Mughal Emperor Jahangir for a one-night visit at Orchha.

This is a three-storied structure, and all floors have access for tourists via stairs. From the top level, you can get a panoramic view of Orchha.

Witness Raja Mahal

Raja Mahal Architecture in Orchha fort Complex

Raja Mahal (King’s house) was the place where the royal family stayed till 1783.  The palace was built in a square design, and the outside architecture of Raja Mahal is relatively simple. However, inside the building, you will find stunning artwork and paintings of Hindu gods and goddesses.

Painting on wall Inside Raja Mahal.

Within the Orchha fort, my favourite building is the Jahangir Mahal, and I spend a lot of time visiting all of the floors. In the evening, there is also the option of attending a light and sound show in the fort. After visiting the Fort, proceed to Chaturbhuj Temple, which is only a 5-minute walk away.

Timing :- 9 Am – 5 Pm

Duration of visit :- 1 – 2 hours.

Pay a Visit to Chaturbhuj Temple

Chatarbhuj Temple Entrence.

The Chaturbhuj Temple will be the first thing you see as you make your way toward the Orchha fort complex due to its height. This temple is one of Orchha’s biggest attractions. King Madhukar Shah constructed the fort about 1600 AD at the wish of his wife.

Chaturbhuj means “four-armed,” and the temple was named after Lord Vishnu’s four-armed avatar. This temple was originally built for Lord Rama but was eventually devoted to Lord Vishnu.

The architecture of this multistory temple is a fusion of temple, fort, and palace elements. Inside the temple, there is only one sculpture of Radha Krishana, which surprised me.

Remember to climb the stairs to the top of the temple for a stunning view over Orchha town and fort. After visiting Chaturbhuj, walk to Ram Raja Temple, which is only 2 to 3 minutes away.

Duration of Visit :- 30 Minutes

Discover Ram Raja Temple

Ram Raja Temple With Light Decoration. Orchha Itinerary

Ram Raja Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Rama. The temple is the only temple in India where Ram sculpture holds a sword and shield and is worshipped as the King of Orchha.

Every day, a large number of tourists visit Ram Raja Temple. Inside the temple, you will see a unique sculpture of Lord Rama with his family. You can go to the temple to attend the Arti ceremony, which takes place in the morning and evening.

Note :- Remember that leather articles such as belts and wallets are not permitted within the temple, and photography is also prohibited.

Timing :- 8 Am-12:30 Pm, 1-8 Pm.

Duration of visit :- 30 Minutes.

Take a visit to Laxminarayan Temple

Laxmi Narayan Temple in Orchha.

Laxmi Narayan Temple is 1 km away from Ram Raja Temple. This magnificent temple is dedicated to Lord Laxmi and was established in 1622 by Vir Singh Deo. The most surprising fact about this temple was that there wasn’t any idol of Lord Laxmi or Narayan.

You will find Ganesh sculpture at the entryway, as well as Krishna and Rukmini within the temple. This structure, like the Chaturbhuj temple, features a fort and temple architecture style.

Carwing on wall inside laxmi Narayan Temple.

Several murals and carvings reflect the epic stories of Ramayana and Mahabharta on the temple’s walls and roof. You will also find artwork depicting British culture and lifestyle.

This temple is one of the finest temples to see on this one-day Orchha itinerary, so don’t miss it. Later in the evening, you may see the light and sound show in the Orchha fort.

Timing :- 9 am – 5 pm

Duration of the Visit :- 30 Min -1 Hour

Enjoy the Orchha Light and sound show

If you are interested in history, you can see a light and sound show in the Orchha fort. The show is an hour-long that takes you through the history of the fort.

The show starts with a short introduction to the history of this area, followed by a light and sound presentation about the life of the Orchha Kings. The last part of the show is about how this fort came to be what it is today.

The show is presented in both Hindi and English; the English show begins at 7:30 p.m., while the Hindi version begins at 8:30 p.m. However, this timing is not fixed, and neither is the show sequence, which may be modified.

One Day in Orchha Itinerary Map

Is Orchha worth visiting?

Yes, Orchha is the finest destination to spend a weekend or a single day away from the hustle and bustle of the city and visit wonderfully architected forts and temples. If you are a foreigner, Orchha will provide you with a flavour of life in a little Indian town.

How many days are enough for Orchha?

The answer to this question is dependent on your travel style. One day is more than enough if you only want to visit the fort and temples and relax by the river. Yet, if you want to see monuments and spend some quiet time with no plans or haste, simply enjoy the surroundings and reset yourself.

This is a terrific spot to do it. You can easily spend two to three days in Orchha. I went to Orchha several times only to rest for two or three days.

What is the best time of year to visit Orchha?

The best time to visit Orchha is September through March when the temperatures are mild and cool and visiting monuments and markets are more pleasant.

The hottest months are April through June, when temperatures can reach 47°C. July and August are rainy months, with temperatures ranging from 33°C to 38°C. However, accommodation will be inexpensive at this time.

How to get to Orchha

Orchha is easy to reach by Train, Bus and Taxi.

Train :-The best way to reach Orchha is via train. Jhansi is the nearest railway station to Orchha, which is 15 km from Orchha Town and takes around 40 minutes to reach.

There are excellent rail connections from Delhi to Jhansi, which takes around 5 hours to reach. but definitely, this railway station also connects to numerous other cities in India.

You must get down at the Jhansi railway station. To go to Orchha, take a cab or an autoriksha (tuk-tuk) from Jhansi station.

There are around 74 trains that go from Delhi to Jhansi; I have included some of the most popular ones.

Delhi To Jhansi Trains

You may reserve a train seat using the Indian Railway Website. This train route is quite popular, therefore I recommend making a reservation 2 to 3 months in advance.

Bus :- Regular bus connections to Jhansi are available from Delhi and other important Indian destinations. You can use the Redbus Website to make reservations for buses.

Where to sleep in Orchha

A question about where to stay comes to every traveller’s mind during planning a trip. Since Orchha is a tiny town, you don’t have many options to choose from. I have found some great hotels in Orchha, which I have personally used.

Bundelkhand Riverside Resort :- A 4-star heritage resort, dating back to 1895. This resort is situated on the bank of the Betwa river and 1.5 km from Orchha fort. The resort offers an outdoor swimming pool and a beautiful restaurant with tasty Indian and continental food.

Rooms are clean and comfortable with handcrafted furnishings. This is the hotel where I stayed many times, and I loved it.

Raj Mahal The Palace :- The Raj Mahal is a four-star hotel located 6 kilometres from the centre of Orchha. This Hotel features a large garden area with a wonderful swimming pool. The rooms are pleasant and decorated in a regal style. I felt at ease in the hotel.

Amer Mahal :- A 3-star hotel that offers an outdoor swimming pool, a massage spa, and a wellness centre, located 300 metres from Chaturbhuj temple. The hotel rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated. In front of all the rooms, there is a nice garden area.

How to get around Orchha?

Orchha is walkable because all the tourist attractions are less than 2 kilometres away. If your accommodation is a long distance away, you can take an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) to the Orchha fort complex.

Where to eat in Orchha.

In a small town like Orchha, deciding where to eat can be challenging. Because most restaurants look the same and offer almost the same menu. In reality, Orchha provides excellent Indian and international dishes.

There are numerous cafés and rooftop restaurants in Orchha, but these are some of the greatest, which I will share with you.

Open Sky Restaurant:- I can say this is the best restaurant in Orchha in terms of food quality and service. They serve wonderful home-cooked food, and the whole family works together in this restaurant. They are extremely humble and lovely people.

Indiana Restaurant Orchha :- Rooftop restaurant, serving delicious Indian and international food, with nice and friendly staff. and offers a nice view of the Orchha Fort and its surroundings.

RamRaja Restaurant :-This is the oldest restaurant in Orchha and offers the best coffee in town. The restaurant appears small yet provides excellent Indian and international cuisine, including poha, thali, pancakes, hash browns, pizza, and much more.

Orchha Hut Restaurent:- Another restaurant with delicious homemade dishes and a very polite and kind cook. He is his wife who cooks meals with love and care. The restaurant is located on the first level and is budget-friendly.

Bundelkhand Riverside resort :- I admire this place. They serve delicious food in a beautifully decorated royal-style restaurant. I recommend you to try lunch in this Resort too.

Note: You can’t buy alcohol in Orchha, Because there isn’t any shop available, Yet there are still some restaurants that are selling beer. Mediterraneo is one of them. If you want to buy alcohol, you need to go to Jhansi.

More Things to Do In Orchha

Orchha wildlife sanctuary.

The Orchha Wildlife Century is located right across the Betwa river and is easily accessible by foot. According to Century personnel, the best time to sight any animal is early in the morning. Yet, it is rare to discover any animal.

If you enjoy nature walks and being surprised by wild animals while wandering, this is the perfect spot for you. From the wildlife century, you can take some fantastic photographs of the chhatris and the river.

Rafting and kayaking in Orchha.

Rafting on the Betwa River is a wonderful experience. It is ideal for beginners because the rapids are gentle. Rafting here is a relaxing experience with beautiful views. Also, early morning kayaking on the Betwa River is excellent for witnessing the breathtaking sunrise.

                                                            ***

I hope this one-day Orchha itinerary helps you make the most of your visit to Orchha. I enjoy visiting Orchha to spend some lazy time and I believe anyone else does as well. Are you planning to visit Orchha? If you have visited Orchha, how was your experience?

Best Places to visit in Orchha - Travel Guide

Last Updated on: Mar 31, 2023

About the Blog: The erstwhile capital of the Bundelas, Orchha is a laid back town in Madhya Pradesh. Offering a rare glimpse into the history, Orchha boasts of temples, forts, palaces and historic monuments. Read our blog to know more about Orchha, the places to visit in Orchha, how to reach and where to stay in Orchha. Hoping this Orchha Travel Guide will help you plan your trip and itinerary to this small, but beautiful historic town in India.

This was perhaps one of the best sunsets we have witnessed in a long time to come. The winter sun was setting behind the Chhatris of Orchha while we watched the dramatic colours of the sky from the banks of the Betwa River. To be honest, I did not have huge expectations from Orchha after our visit to Khajuraho. We came from Khajuraho to Orchha with an open mind to enjoy whatever came our way. While we were researching for places to visit in Orchha, we realized how much this small town in Madhya Pradesh had to offer. And after exploring Orchha, we simply fell in love with this underrated destination in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.

Sunset at Orchha Madhya Pradesh - Places to Visit in Orchha

Orchha has an old-world charm. Located on the banks of the Betwa River, this small agricultural town of India has some of the most beautiful architectural gems in India. While the town is centered around the Ram Raja Temple, the town and its surrounding countryside are dotted with several monuments, forts, temples and cenotaphs. This 500 years old town is a place rich in history and heritage – a place that was going to become one of my favourites.

Chhatri or Royal Cenotaph Orchha - Places to visit in Madhya Pradesh - Places to Visit in Orchha

Orchha – A Brief History

Orchha was once the capital of a flourishing kingdom ruled by the Bundela Kings. The State was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Chief Rudra Pratap Singh. He also shifted his capital from Garh Kundar to Orchha on the banks of River Betwa. The site of the new town was a better place to fortify against the Mughal attacks.  The Bundelas were the descendants of Gaharwar Rajputs of Varanasi .

After almost a decade, Bir Singh Deo (1605 – 1627) became the King of Orchha and was perhaps one of the greatest Bundela Kings of Orchha. The state reached its zenith in political power and splendor in architecture during his reign. He had built several forts, palaces and monuments, not only at Orchha, but also at Datia and Jhansi. He had also built several temples at Mathura and Varanasi and is one of the major contributors of spreading Bundeli architecture to the Northern parts of India.

Laxmi Narayan Temple at Orchha - Places to Visit in Orchha

Orchha remained the capital of the Bundela Dynasty from 1531 to 1783. Later the capital was shifted to Tikamgarh.

During British rule, the area became a part of Bundelkhand Agency. After the independence of India, Vir Singh, the then king, merged his state with the Indian Union on January 1, 1950. The district became a part of Vindhya Pradesh state, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

Orchha Trip

We visited Orchha during the winter months of January. Our Madhya Pradesh trip started with Gwalior and Morena . After that we visited Khajuraho before arriving at Orchha. Once we landed at Orchha, it seemed like any other small town of India. But once we were exploring the place, we were totally engrossed with the chilled-out vibes of the place. We spent two days in Orchha and explored most of the attractions in the place.

Chhatris at Orchha Madhya Pradesh Tourism - Places to Visit in Orchha

Orchha literally means hidden. There are a lot of interesting places to visit in Orchha, especially for history enthusiasts. Even if you are not into history, the magnificence of the place will definitely draw you in. So here is a quick Orchha travel guide to help you plan your trip and make most of your time in Orchha.

How to Reach Orchha?

Orchha is located in the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh. The nearest major railway station from Orchha is in Jhansi, around 20 km away and takes about 30 minutes to reach. To get to Orchha, you have to reach Jhansi first.

Jhansi is one of the major railway stations of Central India and is well connected to all the major cities of the country. From Delhi, it is about five to six hours of train journey. However, you should get your tickets well in advance.

If you are flying in, the nearest airport is Gwalior Airport, 130 km away. From Gwalior, you can either take a train to Jhansi and then reach Orchha, or take a private cab to reach Orchha directly. Buses are also available from Gwalior to Orchha.

Since we were coming from Khajuraho, we took a train from Khajuraho to Jhansi and then took a cab to Orchha.

How to reach Orchha from Jhansi?

You can take a private auto or cab from Jhansi to Orchha. A private cab will probably cost you around INR 500. Buses are also available from Jhansi bus stand to Orchha.

Getting Around Orchha

Orchha is a fairly small place and you can easily walk around to visit most of the attractions.

You can also get rickshaws and auto rickshaws to roam around the city. A short ride within the city will probably cost you INR 100 to 200.

You can also rent bicycles and bikes (scooty as well) in Orchha and explore the place.

Orchha Fort, Madhya Pradesh - Places to Visit in Orchha

Now that you have reached this beautiful town, let us find the places to visit in Orchha. Apart from Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary, the entire town is within a radius of 5 km and you can easily plan your trip in 2 days. There are monuments scattered everywhere across the small town. Most of these are a mixture of Bundeli and Muslim architecture. There are also fortified gates or Darwazas marking the limits of the town.

Darwaza or gates in Orchha

While you can definitely jump from one monument to the other, do the touristy thing of taking insta-worthy photographs, the best way to explore Orchha is to savour the place. While you think about how many days you want to spend in Orchha, here is a list of the must visit places in Orchha.

1. Orchha Fort Complex – Amazing Places to visit in Orchha

Orchha Fort Complex

The Orchha Fort Complex is perhaps the grandest structure in Orchha town. This is one place that you will not miss even if you wanted to. The Orchha Fort Complex dominates the skyline of the town containing a large number of monuments that includes palaces, gateways, gardens, stables, temples and pavilions.

Orchha Fort Complex Madhya Pradesh

The fort is protected by a thick wall and has four main palaces – Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal and several other smaller, but impressive structures. The Sheesh Mahal that has now been converted into a boutique hotel. The Betwa River acts as a moat on one side having an arched bridge connecting over the river. Various structures in the complex have been built at different times by various rulers, something that is seen in most of the historic monuments of India. There are plenty of intricate archways, colourfully painted murals, chambers and passageways in the huge Orchha Fort Complex.

Walking around the grounds of the palace area is free. However, if you want to enter Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and some other monuments, there is an entry fee.

This is the first place you enter after getting the tickets. This part of the complex was built by Madhukar Shah in the seventeenth century. The design has been inspired by the Mughal courts, the hall was used by the King to meet the public and deal with matters of administration and justice.

The main highlight of this hall are the beautiful paintings on the vaulted ceilings and the walls. Just look up and you will see some amazing examples of Bundela style paintings.

Raja Mahal at Orchha Fort - Places to Visit in Orchha

Once leaving Diwan-e-Am, you will enter the Raja Mahal, or the King’s Palace. The construction of Raja Mahal was started in 1531 by Bharti Chand and it served as his private residence. The inner courtyard, perfectly square in shape, was the first part of the palace to be built. The rooms around the courtyard served as private quarters for the royal family. You will see these rooms are painted in Bundela style.

The main highlight of the Raja Mahal are perhaps the vibrant Bundela styled paintings in the six rooms around the courtyard. There are paintings of the Avatars of Vishnu as well as episodes of Ramayana. Other beautiful paintings are found on the wall as well.

There is a second courtyard at the far side and the rooms there also have several beautiful and unique paintings. It is difficult to see the paintings first, but once your eyes are used to the light you will see how impressive the paintings are.

There is another interesting painting of an elephant that is actually made up of 12 women. See it below.

Another rectangular courtyard was added by Madhukar Shah, brother and successor of Bharti Chand. This time, the architectural style was slightly different, perhaps influenced by Mughal architecture. That is why you will see that there are different types of arches at Raja Mahal.

There are staircases to take you to the upper levels and there are five storeys in total. From the upper levels you can look down at the courtyard and the other fort complex surrounding you. It is from here, you get a view of the towering Chaturbhuj Temple and the Cenotaphs.

Once you have explored and head out of the Raja Mahal, climb up a few steps to reach the Jahangir Mahal.

Jahangir Mahal

Jehangir Mahal at Orchha Fort

Jahangir Mahal is perhaps architecturally the most impressive building in the Orchha Fort Complex. It was built in 1610 having a single huge courtyard. The architecture of Jahangir Mahal has both Hindu and Islamic elements.

Jahangir Mahal was built by King Bir Singh Deo to commemorate the visit of emperor Jahangir to Orchha. The place seems to have been used as a guest house and for entertainment. The main entrance was decorated with two stone carved elephants with a bell. The palace has three storeys with 236 chambers.

You can climb up to the upper levels and marvel at the cupolas, domes, pavilions, balconies and the ornate windows. Look around and you will only find brilliance and beauty. From the upper levels you will also get a view of the other buildings and if you look a little far, the Betwa river will also be seen.

Other Structures

Within the Orchha Fort Complex, there are several other structures. One of the interesting structures is the Unth Khana or the camel stable.

A short distance from here is the Rai Praveen Mahal. This was built in the sixteenth century and is named after Rai Praveen, a famous courtesan known for her beauty. The upper levels of the buildings have paintings of Rai Praveen.

2. Chaturbhuj Temple – Places to visit in Orchha

Chaturbhuj temple dominating the skyline of Orchha

While the Orchha Fort is no doubt fascinating, it is the Chaturbhuj Temple that steals the show. Located right in the heart of Orchha, the temple dominates not only the skyline, but also the heart of the town. Built on a high plinth, with impressive spires of various sizes that seem to reach out to the sky. The temple is mammoth, huge and magnificent.

There is an interesting story behind this temple. Historically, the construction of the temple started in 1558 by Madhukar Shah for his Queen Rani Ganesh Kunwari. The construction of the temple was completed by his son Bir Singh Deo.

Legend of the Queen

Legend says that one night Rani Ganesh Kunwari was a devout follower of Lord Rama. One night, she had a divine dream from Lord Rama, instructing her to build a temple for him. The queen was instructed to visit Ayodhya and bring the idol of Rama with her to Orchha. The only condition was that Lord Rama was to be brought from Ayodhya to the temple in one go. Once he was laid down, he would not move from the place.

Chaturbhuj Temple Orchha - Madhya Pradesh Tourism

The queen, with all her devotion went to Ayodhya and brought an idol of Lord Rama with her to Ayodhya. However, the construction of the temple was not yet completed (which is quite understandable) and so the idol was placed at the Rani Mahal, adjacent to the main palace. After the construction of the temple was completed, several attempts were made to move the idol of Lord Rama to the new temple. But the Lord simply refused to move!

Apparently Lord Rama remained in the Rani Mahal itself leaving the Chaturbhuj Temple vacant. The Rani Mahal was converted to Ram Raja Temple and the Rama idol is actively worshiped there even till date.

The Chaturbhuj Temple now houses the idol of Radha-Krishna.

Interiors of the Temple

Interior of the Chaturbhuj temple at Orchha

The interior of the temple is 105m high and is as impressive and elegant as its exteriors. Today the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Chaturbhuj, or the one having four arms. Architecturally, the temple is built in a cross shape representing the four arms of Vishnu.

Having explored the ground levels, you can go up to the upper galleries of the temple. The winding staircases are a bit dark and after climbing some flight of steps with crumbling masonry, you will reach the roof of the Chaturbhuj Temple. The views are, as usual, awesome; with all the major and smaller monuments of Orchha in front of you.

3. Ram Raja Temple – Places to Visit in Orchha

If the Orchha Fort speaks of architectural brilliance and the Chaturbhuj Temple the magnificence of Orchha, then Ram Raja Temple is undoubtedly the heart of Orchha. Ram Raha temple is one of the interesting places to visit in Orchha.

Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is the only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshiped as a king and not as a God. It is here you will see that police are designated to guard the temple and they give daily gun salutes to the deity. It is absolutely fascinating.

Ram Raja Temple at Orchha Madhya Pradesh

The temple does not look like any other temple. It is a rectangular building with four towers. It is because Ram Raja Temple is originally the Rani Mahal or the palace of Queen Gansh Kunwari. Just go through the local legend about the Chaturbhuj Temple in the section above to know more about it.

One of the best times to visit Ram Raja Temple is during Ram Navami when local musicians from neighbouring villages gather to sing songs and hymns in praise of Lord Ram.

Ram Raja Temple Timings: 8.00am to 12.30pm and 1.00pm to 8.00pm

4. Laxmi Narayan Temple

Laxmi Narayan Temple Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Located on a hilltop about 1 km from the Orchha town, what catches attention in Laxmi Narayan Temple is its unique architecture. The building has a blend of temple and fort architecture, something I have not seen in a single building. The fortified outer walls of the temple is square and is flanked by octagonal towers. The inner sanctuary is however triangular. Indeed, a unique architecture. And there is a huge high domed octagonal tower above the inner sanctuary.

Laxmi Narayan Temple - places to visit in Orchha

The exterior of the building was undoubtedly impressive. But what captivated me entirely was its interiors. The interiors have some very beautiful murals and paintings on the walls and ceilings. Episodes of Ramayana, Mahabharata and even episodes from Indian history were painted. There are also paintings depicting scenes of the 1857 uprising.

Laxmi Narayan Temple is absolutely beautiful. The walk of 30 minutes from the Chaturbhuj Temple was completely worth it.

5. Chhatris, the Royal Cenotaphs of Orchha

Chhatris or Royal Cenotaphs of Orchha Madhya Pradesh

The Chhatris of Orchha or the royal cenotaphs are one of my favourite places to visit in Orchha. Constructed in the honor of the rulers of Orchha on the banks of Betwa River, the Chhatris are the highlight of Orchha. There are 15 Chhatris in total of the Bundela kings and their families.

These Chhatris are the memorials and have been built on the spot where the royals were cremated. The monolithic Chhatri dedicated to Raja Bir Singh Deo is one of the finest among the rest.

Chhatri of Bir Singh Deo and Kirpa Ram Gaur at Orchha Madhya Pradesh Tourism - Places to Visit in Orchha

The entrance of the chhatris faces the River Betwa. A few meters away is the significantly smaller chattri of Kirpa Ram Gaur, who was the military commander during the time of King Bir Singh Deo. This is the only Chhatri here that belongs to someone not from the royal family.

Chhatris of Bhagwant Singh and Jaswant Singh at Orchha

The Chhatris are a wonderful set of monuments and also one of the best places to watch the sunset in Orchha. The best place to watch the sunset is from the narrow bridge near the Chhatris. From there you can see the falling rays of the sun on the monuments giving them a golden hue. You can also go on the other bank of Betwa River for a great sunset view.

Entry Ticket: The entry to the Chhatris is included in the ticket for the Orchha Fort Complex. So keep the ticket properly.

Timings: 9.00am to 6.00pm

A Few More Things to Do in Orchha

1. watch the sound and light show.

The Sound and Light show takes place in the courtyard of Orchha Fort Complex. The show is organized every evening for one hour both in English and Hindi language. The Sound and Light Show in Orchha brings to life the 500 years old history of the place. It narrates the discovery of Orchha, the rise and fall of kings, battles and romances and various stories of the royal household. It also throws an insight into the Bundelkhandi architecture, paintings and culture.

If you are fond of Sound and Light shows, then Orchha Sound and Light Show should definitely be on your list.

Entry Fee: For Indian tourists: INR 100, Foreign Tourists: INR 250

Timings: March to October: 7.30 – 8.30pm in English & 8.45 – 9.45pm in Hindi

November to February: 6.30 – 7.30pm in English & 7.45 – 8.45pm in Hindi

2. Go for River Rafting at Betwa River

Sunset view by River Betwa at the Chhatris of Orchha

If you are looking for adventure, then go for river rafting at the Betwa River. The rafting begins at Kanchan Ghat and takes place at a 3.5 km stretch along the Orchha town to Shiv Ghat. The river is generally calm, but there are a few rapids (Grade I/II). There is another option for 6 km of rafting.

Once you start from the Kanchan Ghat, you will see the Chhatris or Cenotaphs first. After crossing the low lying Orchha Bridge, you will come across the Chaturbhuj Temple and several smaller temples. Rafting at Betwa combines adventure with history as you watch the historic monuments of Orchha while tackling the rapids. It is undoubtedly a wonderful experience.

3. Jungle Safari at Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary

Lying on the banks of River Betwa, Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across an area of 45 square kilometers. While you can spot Chital, Sambar deer, Nilgai and several reptiles inside the sanctuary, the place is more known for its birds. Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to as many as 100 species of birds. This is a good place for nature hiking and walks.

Why Orchha is an underrated addition to any India itinerary

Orchha India

Orchha might just be the greatest Indian town you’ve never heard of.

I can distinctly remember carefully looking over my Delhi to Kathmandu itinerary before departure, and having no discernable idea of where Orchha was, or why it might be worth including on an India itinerary.

Of course, I knew Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Kathmandu, and other hotspots, but my mind just drew a blank when it came to Orchha. It’s a wonderful thing, too, because when you have no preconceptions about a place, you’re leaving the door wide open to be wowed.

Orchha, as it turns out, is a very different side of India, and one that I’m very happy I became acquainted with. In many ways, Orchha was the unsung hero of the trip, as it offered an intimate look into a different pace of life with a history that was both fascinating and captivating.

Orchha India

Why come to Orchha?

Founded at the turn of the 16th century by Rudra Pratep Singh, Orchha quickly became of some importance because of the impressive and opulent fort that was built there during Singh’s reign, as well as his own showing of independence and military might. He was a chief of Bundela Rajput descent who reigned over the city from 1501 to 1531, during which time he accomplished an awful lot.

What’s remarkable about Orchha is that, compared to other Indian towns and cities, it remains very much unchanged from its original formation. The town has a distinct medieval aura that woos you with its charm. Sure, modern daily life swirls around the town, but the building blocks of the town are clearly and delightfully historical.

GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN INDIA WITH INTREPID TRAVEL

What should I see and do in Orchha?

Orchha, due to its size, is a really manageable city from a tourist perspective. During our visit, Intrepid set up guided tours of major sights, but we also had a fair bit of time to explore on our own, which I actually really appreciated. This setup ensured that I covered my bases from a historical perspective, but that I also had some room to make this part of the trip “my own,” and discover on my own terms.

Part of making “my own” trip ironically consisted of discovering with others in my group. John and I actually ended up bonding over our experience at Orchha’s funerary temples (known as Chhatris), which wasn’t on the itinerary, but meant a lot to both of us. We also ended up seeing some other members of our group there as well, and taking a few fun photos together, which only added to the experience.

Orchha India

Orchha Fort Complex

In Orchha, you simply won’t be able to miss the Orchha Fort Complex, even if you wanted to. This sight dominates the skyline and the feeling of the town. The complex consists of the fort itself, but more broadly refers to the palaces and temples in the same area of the fort itself, as well as the gardens and pavilions.

READ MORE: THE MAGIC OF MOVING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE IN INDIA

The main palaces which are worth seeing are Raja Mahal (Raja Mandir), Jehangir Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal. Jehangir Mahal in particular is spectacular, and will likely resemble nothing you’ve seen previously in your life. If you’re a fan of Indo-Islamic architecture, then you’ve hit the proverbial jackpot. It was built in the 17th century by the ruler Vir Singh Deo, who built it as a warm welcome for the visit of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

Apparently the welcome wasn’t warm enough, as the two engaged in a bloody war shortly thereafter with Jahangir’s troops coming out on top. However, it wasn’t long before Vir Singh Deo again was back on top, and he remained a proud fugitive the rest of his life.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Like the Orchha Fort Complex, you couldn’t avoid the Chaturbhuj Temple even if you wanted to. The spherical spires stretch nearly 350 feet into the air and are impressive and imposing to say the least. The temple was started by Madhukar Shah, but completed by his son, Vir Singh Deo in the 17th century. The temple is dedicated to the god Vishnu, which is exemplified by the name “chaturbhuj,” which in sanskrit literally translates to “one who has four arms.”

Looking at dates, it’s clear the Bundela Rajputs went on an unprecedented building spree in the early 17th century and constructed an impressive collection of buildings and temples, most of which are still standing today.

These cenotaphs are living monuments which pay respect to Orchha’s past royalty, including the likes of Vir Singh Deo, which is separated away from the rest of the cenotaphs near the water. As I mentioned before, during our afternoon off, myself and another participant, John, moseyed on down and were in awe when we got there. Chhatris, right on the banks of the Betwa River, is just a 10 or so minute walk from the center of the town, and I’d strongly recommend a visit.

A cooking class to remember

The cooking class which you can take part in with Intrepid might just have been the highlight of my time in India, if only because we were warmly welcomed into someone’s home in Orchha for the experience. We learned about the local cuisine in an intimate cooking demonstration in a local family’s home. The kids were working on their homework with dad, and mom graciously made a meal from scratch, then we were able to indulge, and it was scrumptious.

Understanding what went into the meal (which was, as it turns out, equal parts spice and love) altered my experience and appreciation for Indian cuisine. While I do love solo travel, I really don’t see how I would have had this experience without Intrepid’s support for and connection to the local community.

READ MORE ABOUT THIS MEMORABLE COOKING CLASS

Furthermore, our local leader, Chime, played a big part in elaborating upon and contextualizing the importance of cooking in Indian culture and, once again, served as an important bridge for our knowledge of India.

Oh to be in Orchha Again

More than big cities like Delhi and Kathmandu , I yearn to be back in Orchha. In many ways, Orchha is like one big outdoor museum, where you’re immersed in the town’s history and stories. That’s what I keep coming back to with Orchha, the sense that you can get the story and see the town without much effort because almost all of the town is worth seeing.

However, I also know the value of going to a place like Orchha and putting in that effort to understand and appreciate what makes the town unique. They’ve got a proud heritage that you’d be remiss not to dive into while you’re a guest in the town. It’s a history that I didn’t know that I’m now personally attached to, and I’m grateful for that. Places like Orchha – smaller places that can sometimes get lost in the tourist fray – provide value because you don’t have a set of expectations for the town or city to live up to. You get to arrive with an open mind and heart, and simply let yourself get swept away.

THE ORCHHA TRAVEL GUIDE

THE ORCHHA TRAVEL GUIDE

If you have planned a trip to Madhya Pradesh, make sure to include Orchha in your Madhya Pradesh itinerary. Perhaps you may not have even heard of Orchha, but trust me you should not miss out on this secret gem during your Madhya Pradesh trip. This Orchha travel guide includes all the essential practical information you need to know for planning your trip along with the best things to do in Orchha. Let’s begin!

Orchha was the most surprising discovery of my Madhya Pradesh holiday! Before planning my trip, I had’nt heard much about this small town so I did not know what to expect. And now that I have visited, here is my verdict: it is an underrated gem that is similar to Udaipur’s old town but with more authentic and low key charm. The place is compact and packed with historic sites that are all located near each other, making it a very easy place for sightseeing. Orchha is steeped in history as the seat of the Bundela kings and oozes an air of laid back relaxation. The river Betwa flows through town and the sunsets are stunning. I am so happy I included Orchha in our MP plans as it turned out to be the highlight of our trip!

HISTORY OF ORCHHA

Orccha was founded in 1531 by King Rudra Pratap Singh and became the capital of the Bundela dynasty till 1783,as a defence against increasing Mughal attacks. Orcha flourished under the Bundeli kings as evident from the various historic sites that were built here including the fort and many temples. Orccha reached it’s height of power and splendour  during the reign of King Vir Singh Deo who also built the Datia fort that can be visited on the way from Gwalior. With British rule, the kingdom signed a treaty of alliance and ultimately joined the independent Indian state in 1950. You can get a summarised version of Orchha’s history at the Light and Sound show which takes place every evening at the fort (details below).

Orchha gave rise to a new architectural style called as Bundeli architecture with a harmonious blend of Rajput and Mughal styles. This is evident in the palaces, the chattris and the temples. King Vir Singh Deo also built many temples in North India thereby spreading Bundeli architecture to other places.

Orchha is also a living cultural site, in the sense that despite newer development, the historic character of the town has still been preserved and the monuments and temples have been maintained thanks to the efforts of the community. Currently Orchha is in the tentative list of UNESCO cultural heritage sites and hopefully it will soon be declared as a UNESCO world heritage site as it deserves.

ORCHHA TRAVEL GUIDE

How to reach orchha.

  • FLIGHTS: The nearest airport is in Gwalior which has flights from most major Indian cities. Orchha is located 120 kms from Gwalior and it is a 2 hour road journey from there. The cab price is approx Rs 3000.
  • TRAIN: The nearest railway station is in Jhansi, 13 kms from Orchha town.
  • BUS: Buses run from all towns in Madhya Pradesh.

WHEN TO VISIT ORCHAA

The best time to visit is from November to February. Summer begins from March and sightseeing in the high temperatures becomes very difficult and exhausting. Winters can get very cold especially during evenings and night so pack your woollens accordingly. In my opinion, the best time to visit is during February when the days are pleasant for sightseeing and the nights are not too cold and can be managed with a sweater/light jacket.

HOW MANY DAYS SHOULD YOU SPEND IN ORCHAA?

You can easily see all the sights listed here in 1 full day. But personally, I would suggest 2 days in Orchha to simply take it slow and relax in this charming laidback town. In India, there are’nt too many places where you can get this sort of feel, so make the most of it!

WHERE TO STAY IN ORCHHA?

Honestly, accommodation is one of the areas where you can fully feel the difference between a popular tourist destination and those that are still developing their tourist infrastructure. And Madhya Pradesh definitely falls into the latter category as it’s still developing as a tourist destination. Except for Bandhavgarh (and other tiger parks) which are internationally popular among the wildlife seeking crowd, most places in Madhya Pradesh lack good mid range hotel options. You are stuck between a few luxury hotels that are way over priced or budget guesthouses that certainly are’nt my idea of a good holiday. So in MP, I will recommend you to stay in the Madhya Pradesh tourism hotels that have good locations, service and a mid range price point. And the best MPT hotels in MP are undoubtedly in Orchha: Hotel Sheesh Mahal and Hotel Betwa Retreat.

Hotel Sheesh Mahal: The best place to stay as it is actually inside the Orchha fort. It was originally a part of the palace that has been converted into a heritage hotel and belongs to the MP government.

Hotel Betwa Retreat: This one is located near the Betwa river and is another good option for those want to stay near the river.

OUR STAY: HOTEL SHEESH MAHAL

This was out first time staying in an actual converted palace within a heritage fort and I loved the experience. Thanks to it’s location within the fort, the sightseeing becomes super easy. There is an on-site restaurant and the staff are very friendly and helpful. They can arrange the light and sound show tickets, arrange good guides to show you around the fort and call tuk tuk drivers. Staying here meant we  could wake up early and catch the sunrise and the beautiful views of Chaturbhuj temple or take a post dinner walk around the quiet fort when the day trippers have left.

orchha tour itinerary

Also, the fort is only 1.5 kms away from the river and the chattris. I highly recommend staying in Sheesh mahal for a once in a lifetime experience.

You can book Sheesh Mahal  here.

GETTING AROUND IN ORCHHA

Orchha is one of the best places to walk around and sightsee as most of the sights are located near each other. To visit those that are a bit further, you can use tuk tuks that are easily available.

The most famous attraction in Orcha is the Fort whose construction began in 1501 and continued for many years with new buildings being added by the kings of every generation. The main highlights here include Jahangir mahal (Built for the Mughal emperor Jahangir’s 1 night stay), the residential Raja mahal with it’s beautiful wall paintings, Praveen Rai mahal, Sheesh mahal (now a government  hotel) along with other temples and edifices.  The fort opens at 8am and it’s best to arrive here early to escape the heat. Taking a guided tour is highly recommended to know more about the history and architectural elements.

Entry time: 8am-5pm Daily. Ticket price: Rs 10 (Indians), Rs 250 (foreigners), Rs 400 (camera fee) The entry and camera fee for Orchha fort is valid for 1 full day across all monuments in Orchha.

2. JAHANGIR MAHAL

The main attraction inside the fort is this 3 storey palace that was built in the 17 th century by King Vir Sigh Deo for the Mughal emperor Jahangir’s first visit to Orchha. The palace was  built with a mix of both muslim and Rajput architecture and these features can be easily pointed out to you by a guide. There is a square inner courtyard with 8 large domes, projecting platforms, balconies and lattice windows. Go early and walk across the various rooms to soak in the history while also getting some good shots!

the best places to visit in Orchha

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: The main inner square courtyard is very beautiful and if you want photos here come right at opening time to avoid tour groups. Next, take the door to the right of the courtyard to go out and you will find a beautiful view point where you can see the various structures dotting the fort premises. The stunningly carved monumental door here is another photo point. After this, go up and walk through the corridors and rooms where there are lots of good framing oppurtunities for photography. Lastly, while upstairs go to the left side balconies to get a good view of Chaturbhuj temple.

3. RAJA MAHAL:

This was the residential palace of the royal family and was built by King Rudra Pratap and completed by his successor King Madhukar Shah in the 17 th century. The palace is another example of Mughal inspired architecture with it’s arches and stone jalli work. Though simple, the main highlights here are the beautiful murals on the walls and ceilings depicting stories from mythology and religion.

4. CHATURBHUJ TEMPLE:

Built in the 16 th century by King Madhukar Shah, this beautiful temple has one of the highest spires/towers among Hindu temples at 344 ft. The name ‘Chaturbhuj’ means 4 arms and refers to the Ram incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It was originally built to house an idol of Ram that was brought by Madhukar Shah’s queen, Ganesh Kuwari from Ayodhya. But this idol was ultimately housed in the Rani mahal (Queen’s palace) part of the palace that is now known as Raja Ram temple. The Chaturbhuj temple looks pretty imposing with it’s multiple storeys, large entrance and central tower. Local people say that the towers were originally covered with gold which has been stolen over the years. Reaching this temple involves climbing 67 narrow and steep steps that will add to your daily steps! Today it is dedicated to Radha-Krishna. Go to the upper floors to get a panaromic view of Orchha fort and the town from above.

Ticket is included with the fort ticket. Entry time: 8am-5pm daily.

Best places to visit in Orchha

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: The best spot to photograph Chaturbhuj temple is in the early morning from Orchha fort: either from the upper floors of Jahangir Mahal or from Sheesh Mahal. You will need a zoom lens of at least 70-100 mm for a good shot.

orchha tour itinerary

5. RAJA RAM TEMPLE

The speciality of this temple is that this is the only temple in the country where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king, hence the name ‘Raja’(King) Ram temple. The temple premises is a part of the Orchha fort and was originally the Rani mahal or Queen’s palace which was later converted into the temple. A guard of honour takes place daily during the time of aarti and armed police guards are posted here for protection. The aarti occurs at 8am, 12,30pm,8pm and 10:30pm.

TIP: There is a shortcut path from here to Chaturbhuj temple so that you do not need to assess the main road.

6. LAXMI NARAYAN TEMPLE:

Dedicated to Goddess Laxmi, the architecture of this temple is actually a strange mix of a temple and a fort. This is not a functioning temple and there is no idol today. However, there are well preserved murals on the ceilings and walls of the 3 halls with vivid colours that showcase religious and secular scenes. It is located 4kms from the fort on top of a small hill. Tuk tuks will leave you at the bottom from where it is a short 5-10 mins walk uphill.

best things to do in orchha

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: The best photography spot here is upstairs on the roof where you can see the 4 projecting mini towers at the 4 corners. Make use of the arches to frame the towers for a better composition. Apart from this, the view from above is good too. Do not forget to take pictures of the beautiful wall paintings.

7. CHATTRIS:

Chattris meaning ‘umbrellas’ are the Royal Cenotaphs, built as the memorials of the various kings of the Bundela dynasty numbering 14 in total. Located in Kanchan ghat along the banks of the Betwa river, 1.5 km from the fort, these 3 storey tombs are built in an Indo-Islamic architecture style with elevated platforms and domes. From afar, they resemble conical peaks. They are not burial grounds, rather empty structures. Entry from 8am-6pm. Avoid the mid day sun.

Orchha travel guide

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: Go upstairs and make use of the arches and windows to frame the subject with the background of a chattri or gardens or the river. The best chattris are the ones which are lined up near the river side where you can get good views of the river and it’s surroundings.

8. RIVER BETWA:

The river passes through town and offers scenic views. Boating, kayaking and river rafting are some of the activities on offer here. Or else you can just sit on the steps of Kanchana ghat and watch the tranquil water passing by. The stunning sunsets seen here just an added bonus to the whole scene!

9. WATCH THE STUNNING SUNSETS

After visiting so many places, i can confidently say that Orchha has one of the best sunsets that i have ever seen! The serene river with the cenotaphs in the background and the flaming sky all combine to provide a picture perfect photographic scene.

Orchha travel guide

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: There are 2 main spots here to capture the sunset:

  • The bridge (pol) that goes across the river is the most popular spot where locals and tourists alike gather and it is a Free spot. Check the first picture to see this.
  • A couple minutes walk from the bridge is a small nature park that is directly across the chattris on the riverside. Entry here is Rs 40 per person and it is open till 6pm. Go there and walk around to find many sunset spots. My favourite here was the spot at the extreme right end near a large tree. Check the second picture.

10. LIGHT AND SOUND SHOW:

Make sure to watch the light and sound show which takes place daily in the Diwan-e-aam of Orchha fort. I found the show very well produced and interesting and a good way to know about the history of Orchha.

ENTRY FEES: Rs 100 (adults), Rs 50(children). Timings: In summers, the time  is from 7:45 PM to 8:30 PM in English and 8:45 PM to 9:45 PM in Hindi. In winters, the allotted time is from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM in English and 7:45 PM to 8:45 PM in Hindi.

About the Tour

If you love the rich Indian heritage and its mind-blowing architecture, then the trip to Orchha, and Khajuraho will be among the most memorable trips of your life. Khajuraho Group of Monuments is UNESCO World Heritage. You unfold the stories of brave rulers from history, their beautiful forts, and the temples built by them.

And, how about experiencing this destination during a perfect monsoon? The weather is just pleasant, waterfalls are in full flow, and our rustic heritage contrasts against dark greenery giving us Instagram-worthy shots!

Orchha, one of the finest offbeat travel destinations in the country, is a picturesque town located on the banks of Betwa river in central India. Frozen in time, the grandeur of Orchha’s forts, palaces, temples, and ghats transport us back in time.  The 16th century Bundelkhandi architecture with Mughlai influence tells tales from history through its intricate stone carvings. Chaturbhuj temple dominates the skyline of Orchha while on the other hand, the cenotaphs, when viewed from the other end of the river make a beautiful backdrop during the time of sunset.

Orchha was established as the capital town of mighty Bundela Rajputs, by Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century. The word Orchha means ‘hidden’, hence a suitable place for a Rajput capital. It’s one of the rarest places across the country that has still maintained its ancient glory and magnificence. The very perfect amalgamation of nature and heritage make Orchha an inviting place for all kinds of visitors.

Just a couple of kilometers from Orchha lies the town of Khajuraho, which is famous for being home to one of the most unique temples in the world, formally known as the ‘Khajuraho Group of Monuments’. This group of monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has always caught the attention of people because of the erotic sculptures depicting Kama Sutra in the temples. The temples were built between 950 to 1050 A.D., during Chandela Dynasty, and hence these temples clearly reflect the immense appreciation of Chandela rulers for forbidden art. In fact, some temples also have sculptures of the most revered Gods of Hinduism.

While exploring the architectural beauty of Orchha and Khajuraho, we also get a chance to witness the natural heritage of the Bundelkhandi region. Did you know that Sunset at Kanchana Ghat is so beautiful that it will leave you speechless? We also get to visit Raneh Falls which are in full flow during monsoon and are bound to recharge & rejuvenate the core of your soul.

Let’s set on a journey with a group of wonderful individuals to experience the charm of this old world, enrich ourselves with some interesting facts, and relax away from our noisy metro cities for a few days.

Trip Highlights

orchha tour itinerary

1. Orchha stay in a traditional resort

Our Orchha resort is a previous hunting lodge, spread over 50 acres. The present resort is an addition to the old construction that dates back to 1895. The resort beautifully overlooks the river Betwa and has verandahs from which the guests can enjoy the view of the flowing waters of the beautiful Betwa River. Its interior design offers a palette of local colors and materials and thus reflects the heritage and glory of the erstwhile Bundela Rulers at Orchha.

Orchha Cenotaphs

2. Orchha Cenotaphs

One can find cenotaphs at countless places in India but the beauty of the Centopahs of Orchha is that they have been built spectacularly on the banks of the Betwa River and boasts of Indo-Mughal architecture. An early evening spent wandering around the cenotaphs followed by a sunset is something one would never forget. The cenotaphs were constructed to be the tombs of the Bundela kings who ruled the Orchha. There are total 14 of them with the cenotaph of  Raja Bir Singh Deo being the most elaborated and the unique one.

Chaturbhuj Temple View

3. Chaturbhuj Temple

Almost 105 meters high, Chaturbhuj Temple is one of tallest, fabulous and the magnificent structures of ancient India. It was built by king Madhukar Shah in between the years 1558 and 1573. The temple houses an idol of Lord Vishnu with four arms but was originally meant for Lord Rama’s idol. It has a complex multi-storied structure which is a blend of the architectural features of temples, forts, and palaces. The temple has tall spires in the shape of pine cones built atop a high platform.

orchha tour itinerary

4. Laxminarayan Temple

As the name suggests, Laxmi Narayan Temple is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi, but still there is no idol of Goddess kept inside the temple. It’s one of the most interesting and unique temples of Orchha. It exhibits a perfect combination of temple and fort architecture. It has captivating mythological murals and geometrical carvings of scenes from the life of Lord Krishna. It’s one of the preferred places to view a sunset in the town.

Orchha Fort Complex

5. Orchha Fort Complex

It houses a large number of ancient monuments consisting of the fort, palaces, and temple. The most visited landmarks in Orchha Fort Complex are Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, and Phool Bagh. Raj Mahal used to be the abode of kings and queens until it was abandoned in 1783. The secret passages, murals, and mirror work inside Raj Mahal are fabulous. Jahangir Mahal was built inside the fort in the 17th century to mark Jahangir’s visit to the town. It’s a combination of both Mughal and Bundela architecture. Sheesh Mahal is now a heritage hotel inside Orchha Fort complex offering a royal experience.

Kanchana Ghat Orchha

6. Kanchana Ghat

Words are less to describe the unforgettable beauty of Kanchana ghat. The mesmerizing view of the reflection of cenotaphs (chhatris) in the shimmering waters of Betwa river, when viewed from Kanchana ghat, is worth a hundred photos. It’s an experience and the exquisiteness of this place that shall keep haunting you to return to this place.

Ram Raja Mandir

7. Ram Raja Mandir

Lord Rama arrived in Orchha from Ayodhya in a child form in the lap of Queen Ganesh Kunwari and took his place inside the palace of the queen which is now known as Ram Raja Mandir. It’s the only temple in India where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king. The temple is guarded by police personnel and an armed salutation is offered to Lord Ram every day. Why Lord Ram is worshipped here as a king is an interesting story that we shall discuss during the trip!

All the temples in western group are made from pink and yellow sandstone except Kandariya Mahadev Temple and Chausath-Yogini Temple which are made from granite.

Eastern Group of Temples

9. Eastern Group of Temples

Just a couple of hundred meters from the Western group of temples lies the old village of Khajuraho which used to be the home to the Jain Community during the Chandela dynasty. This is also the eastern part of Khajuraho, and hence this place is home to the Jain group of temples which is also known as the Eastern group of temples. orchha tour itinerary

When we start planning a trip and after we come back, there are certain learnings which can help community plan better. Certainly, same solution or thought process doesn't work for everyone and all of us have different definition and priorities when we say we travel to explore. Having said that, today I am making a statement that Orchha can be explored in a day. That doesn't mean that you can't spend more time around this beautiful heritage town of Madhya Pradesh, but what I mean to say is that if you have only one day in hand, you can very well plan for it and explore well. This blogpost will help you with a clear plan to ensure that we save your time in terms of doing to & fro or finding parking, grabbing tickets etc. Let's check out what plan do I have for you.

Before we dive into exact plan for the day, let me share some key pointers for you to keep in mind :

1. Tickets for all monuments can only be bought of Orchha Palace.

2. If you are in a car, buy 30 rs parking ticket at one place and it works in whole town. Please remember it's one time for a day. There is a scam around it to make tourists fool and charge parking fees every time at every tourist spot.

3. Orchha is a small town and most of the tourist attractions are nearby. One can also walk easily between these key points of attraction in Orchha town.

Let's start with one dat itinerary to explore Orchha well:

1. Orchha Palace, Sheesh Mahal and Raja Mahal :

orchha tour itinerary

First you should go to the Orchha palace. As you cross the bridge and the first entry gate you’ll see counter on the left. This is the place to get tickets for all monuments of Orchha. It’s not that you have to buy multiple tickets but single ticket for the day works at all monuments of Orchha. So remember to keep the ticket safe with you.

6. Aarti at Raja Ram Temple :

The Raja Ram Temple in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, is the only temple in the world where Lord Ram is worshipped as a King. The temple was originally the Rani Mahal and was converted into a temple for Raja Ram when an idol brought here from Ayodhaya refused to be moved to the temple that was built for it.

After light and sound show you can walk to the Rajaram temple and witness evening Aarati.

The Raja Ram Temple in  Orchha ,  Madhya Pradesh , is the only temple in the world where Lord Ram is worshipped as a King. The temple was originally the Rani Mahal and was converted into a temple for Raja Ram when an idol brought here from Ayodhaya refused to be moved to the temple that was built for it.

Here's how the legend goes - the 16th century was also the period when the temples of North India were seeing widespread destruction at the hands of invaders. Historical texts from various sources claim that temples were also destroyed at Ayodhya during this period. Meanwhile as per the legends, almost 500 kms away, in the city of Orchha, a tussle erupted between the erstwhile King Madhukar Shah Ju Dev and his wife Queen Ganeshkunwari. The King was a devotee of Lord Krishna and the Queen, of Lord Ram.

7 Best Things To Do in Orchha in 2024

Looking for things to do in Orchha Madhya Pradesh? This small town is absolutely a must-visit on your next India trip and this guide has you sorted with the best places to see in Orccha.

The town of Orchha is over 500 years old and is conveniently close to the city of Jhansi, from where you can easily catch trains all over India . The town is well known as a religious centre and for its historical monuments.

Set on the banks of the Betwa River, Orchha is a great place to escape the crowds and see a quieter side of India.

I visited Orchha as part of a 2 week India trip that also included Abhaneri , Khajuraho , Varanasi and the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur and Agra).

A day trip from Jhansi is an easy way to see Orchha, although I would recommend overnighting in the area so you can see more.

Best Things to Do in Orchha

1. orchha palace.

The Orchha palace, or Orchha Fort, is the number one place to visit in Orchha. Built by the Bundela dynasty, Hindu rulers of the princely state of Orchha from the 16 th  century.

The complex technically includes two major palaces as well as a bunch of smaller (but still impressive) outbuildings. It’s heavily fortified, with the river acting as a moat on one side, and outer walls covered in archer slits and elephant spikes.

The Raja Mahal was the residence of the kings and royal family and is richly decorated inside although simpler outside.

paintings in orccha palace

The Jahangir Palace was built for the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who sadly only visited once. It’s a stunning combination of Indo-Islamic architecture with countless arches and intricate carvings.

You can climb to the upper levels of the Jahangir Palace to get great views over the palace courtyard and surrounding area. Although don’t try this if you’re afraid of heights or have mobility issues as there are no barriers on the balconies and the steps are very steep.

Jahangir Palace Orccha

We hired a local guide from the fort office to explain the history of the complex and I’d definitely recommend this as you learn a lot and there are very few signs to tell you what you’re looking at.

Current guide fees are displayed at the ticket office and are typically a few hundred rupees dependent on group size.

Entry is only around 12rs although you will have to pay extra to take cameras in (smartphones are fine).

The complex is open 8 am to 5 pm but subject to change on holidays.

2. Orchha Temples

Orchha is well known as a Hindu religious hub and particularly for its devotion to Rama, the god who is worshipped as a king (Ram Raja) in Orchha.

There are two main temples in Orchha, the Ram Raja temple which is newer and used for puja ceremonies throughout the day, and the older Chaturbhuj Temple which does technically have an operating shrine but is not used for mass worship.

These temples were built by a previous king and queen of Orchha for their respective favourite deities, with the Ram Raja temple being a converted palace.

Visitors can attend prayers at the Ram Raja temple which is absolutely a must do as the energy here is incredible, creating a very powerful experience. Just remember to remove your shoes, dress (and behave) conservatively and leave room for worshippers.

You can also climb the stairs up to the Chaturbhuj Temple which features panoramic views over the fort, cenotaphs, and surrounding countryside. There is a small shrine to Vishnu at which visitors can make offerings and ask for blessings.

chaturbhaj temple Orchha

3. Orchha Chattris

Chattris are tombs similar to Western cenotaphs but these monuments are unlike any grave or memorial you would find elsewhere in the world. These memorialise different kings of the Bundela dynasty, who also built the Orchha fort.

Set in a large garden and surrounded by flowers in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, this is the most peaceful spot in Orchha to explore and is especially brilliant at sunrise or sunset.

There are four large chhattris and ten smaller ones. Each chattri is a multi-storey building, largely hollow with rows of arches that you can walk between and glimpse the river through. They are topped with domes, some short and rounded and others tall and pointed to mimic the Himalayas. This makes for awesome photos!

Orchha chhattris

4. Saket Museum

This museum, next to the Ram Raja temple, is easy to miss but a must-add to your list of places to visit in Orchha.

The museum is small, but it has some beautiful artworks from all over India representing the stories of Lord Ram in markedly different artistic styles.

The main attraction at the museum is the life-size statues of the gods, brightly coloured and made of fibreglass.

5. Betwa River rafting

As Orchha is built around the river, getting out on the water is a great way to see a different side of the town and a very different experience to your typical sightseeing.

There are a couple of companies offering rafting trips, generally one-way starting from just past the main bridge with jeep transfers back to your starting point. The easiest way to book is to call ahead.

Expect to pay anything from 200-2500rs per person depending on inclusions (ie hotel transfers, lunch).

The river is fairly calm but there are some rapids (Grades 1/2) to keep things interesting. And the water is much cleaner than elsewhere in India so if you end up falling in it’s not the end of the world.

6. Rajni Cooking School

Learning to cook some Indian cuisine is a must-do on your trip and there is an opportunity to do this in Orchha with Rajni Cooking Classes.

Rather than a hands-on school with an industrial kitchen, these classes are hosted by a local woman in her family’s home. While you can help out with making dishes, the classes are mostly a demonstration.

Each class typically starts with masala chai and can include 10+ dishes, depending on group size. And yes, you do get to eat them all at the end!

There is no schedule or online bookings so the best way to organise a class is to make a request via the Facebook page .

Like all Indian towns, Orchha has a main street full of small shops and market stalls. The area around the Ram Raja temple in particular, is full of stalls selling both tourist souvenirs and religious paraphernalia like garlands and ribbons.

The shopping here is good, considering the size of the town and provides a calmer alternative to the larger markets in the big cities. You do still need to bargain hard though!

I found most shops sell similar goods of relatively cheap quality but found some great bargains on clothing.

Orchha Tours

There are very few options available for scheduled guided tours to Orchha, especially for foreign visitors. However, you can easily organise a private driver to take you around, make enquiries at Jhansi station.

How to get to Orchha from Jhansi

Orchha is only 20km from the city of Jhansi which is the closest transport hub.

The best way to get to Orchha from Jhansi is by hiring a taxi which are easiest to find at the train station.

The drive takes around 30-45 minutes, depending on the time of day and can cost anything from a few hundred rupees to a few thousand depending on your bargaining skills.

There is technically a local train that runs between Jhansi and Orchha however it stops quite a way out from the main attractions and accommodations so it’s not a great option if you have baggage with you.

Jhansi train station

Orchha Itinerary

If you are doing an Orchha day trip from Jhansi, I’d recommend focusing on the palace and two main temples.

If you have another day, try getting up early to see the cenotaphs (chattris) at sunrise then head out for a bit of river rafting. Hit the markets for some food and a bit of shopping.

Where to stay in Orchha

Like most of regional India, there are no chain hotels and most accommodation is small family-run ‘hotels’ that are very basic however there are 2-3 higher quality options aimed at foreign tourists.

Luxury: Amar Mahal Hotel – Mahal means palace and this place truly does look like one, right from the front gates

Mid-range: Orchha Resort –this is a mass-market tourist option but offers all the more comfortable touches like a pool, spa and buffet that are less common elsewhere

Budget: Hotel Ganpati – a friendly family-run spot with river views and basic but clean rooms

A tip for Indian accommodation: you get what you pay for so if something looks like a great deal don’t expect it to be as good as the pictures. Things like wifi, AC and hot water may be advertised but not actually working.

Frequently asked questions on Orchha

While peak tourist season in India is from November to February and has the coolest temperatures, you’ll find the place quieter and get even better deals if you come slightly before or after. I last visited Orccha in October which had good weather (hot and humid but manageable with some cooling drizzle).

While there are many attractions in Orchha, the town is most famous for its fort/palace, closely followed by the temples of Ram Raja and Vishnu.

This really depends on how much you like to cram into a day and how many of the things to do in Orchha are of interest to you. Most people only do a day trip, but I would say overnighting (2 days) is ideal.

In Short: Places to see in Orccha

Visiting Orchha is a truly unique experience and a great option for travellers wanting an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Happy travelling!

Orchha could make towns many times its size green with jealousy. At heart, Orchha is nothing but a tiny, agricultural village that shouldn't really be of much interest to anyone, but it was blessed by history: for nearly 300 years it was one of the most important urban areas in this part of India. This has left the small town with a supreme display of Mughal-influenced Rajput architecture in the shape of spectacular palaces, temples and royal chhatris (cenotaphs). And thanks to an important temple dedicated to Rama, it's also a major pilgrimage and spiritual centre. Combine these with a laid-back atmosphere, some fabulous accommodation options, as well as opportunities to enjoy the surrounding pastoral countryside, with walking, cycling and rafting all on the agenda, and you'll understand why Orchha can be considered one of the highlights of Madhya Pradesh.

A quick guide to travel in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Below you can find a quick guide to travel in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, the fort-filled former capital of a Rajput kingdom.

On the banks of the Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh lies the village of Orchha. Roughly 400 km from Delhi, the village served as the capital of Bundelkhand between the 16th and 18th century. The rulers were a clan of Rajputs friendly with the Mughal emperor Jahangir. Though distinctly Rajput in style, their architecture was also heavily influenced by the Mughals.

Today, Orchha is a chill town centered around the Ram Raja Temple, a temple where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king. Both the town and the surrounding countryside are dotted with forts, temples, and tombs; the area is well worth a day or two of Indian adventuring.

To help you make the most of your Orchha adventure, here’s a quick guide to travel in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh.

Raja Mahal in Orchha - Guide to travel in Orchha - Lost with Purpose travel blog

How to get to Orchha

To get to Orchha, you first have to head to Jhansi, a city about 30 minutes from Orchha in Uttar Pradesh.

Jhansi is on a major rail line from Delhi; many trains heading further south stop at Jhansi. The train takes only five to six hours, but beware: tickets sell out fast in high season! It’s also possible to get to Jhansi from Bhopal by train, or from Khajuraho via Chhatarpur.

From Jhansi, you can get a private rickshaw to Orchha for about 300 Rs . It’s also possible to get a shared rickshaw from Jhansi bus station, which should cost you around 30 Rs . There are shared rickshaws from Jhansi railway station to Jhansi bus station for 10 Rs .

Things to do in Orchha

Most people travel to Orchha to bask amongst the multitudinous palaces and temples. That’s all well and good, but know there’s much more to Orchha than its monuments!

orchha tour itinerary

Roam about the palace area

The palace area, situated on a small island across from Orccha, is home to two grand palaces: the Raj Mahal and the Jahangir Mahal.

Both mahals are in great condition, and house plenty of intricate archways, lovingly painted murals, and little lookout spots great for photographic eyes. The island is filled with other smaller temples, havelis , and palaces in varying states of upkeep.

See more: if you’re visiting Madhya Pradesh, don’t forget to check out the Bandhavgarh National Park , home of Panpatha Sanctuary and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. It’s definitely worth the trip

Walking around the grounds of the palace area is free, as is entering most of the buildings. But if you want to enter the Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and several other sights, you have to buy a ticket.

There is a combi ticket available for the two palaces, plus several other sites including…

  • The camel stables and Rai Praveen Mahal (both in the palace area)
  • Cenotaphs of the Rajput rulers
  • Chaturbhuj Temple
  • Lakshmi Narayan Temple.

The combi ticket price is  10 Rs for Indians, 250 Rs for foreigners , plus 25 Rs per camera if you have one. The ticket is only valid on the day of purchase.

Another good reason to travel to Orchha is the magnificent temple dominating Orchha’s skyline.

Chatarbhuj was built in the 16th century, and was supposed to house an idol of Lord Rama. The best part: you can climb the narrow stairs to the roof for an incredible view of Orchha and the surrounding countryside.

Get lost in Ram Raja and the surrounding bazaar

The Ram Raja temple is situated next tot he Chatarbhuj Temple, and houses a revered idol of Rama.

The temple and the surrounding bazaar are a hive of activity, with devotees jostling to get a glimpse of the idol, and milk-sweet vendors vying loudly for your rupees. Vivid colors pop in the bazaar, which nevertheless has a chilled out atmosphere by Indian standards.

Close to the temple and further into the bazaar you can find Phool Bagh, a small garden with the tomb of a local hero.

Weave through the Orchha Cenotaphs (Chhatris)

The tombs for the former rulers of Orchha can be found at the southern end of the town. The main cluster is situated in a calm Mughal style garden, offering serenity away from the town. Great place to hang out at sunset. The Orchha Cenopaths are part of the combi-ticket that can be purchased at the entrance of Raj Mahal.

Climb to the top of Lakshmi Narayan Temple

Delve into nature (and sites within)

Besides the above mentioned there are plenty of other temples, palaces, and tombs to explore in and around Orchha. Many of these are abandoned or taken over by farmers who, in some cases, have made their home inside the temple. One such example is the Shiv Temple, a bit north of the Palace Area. If you have the time it is worth seeking out some of the further sights, as they offer a slice of tranquility while exploring rural India.

One of the many smaller sites scattered around the countryside

Across from Orchha there is also a nature reserve with several hiking paths. Entry fees are 15 Rs for Indians and 150 Rs for foreigners. If you don’t feel like walking, there are several bike rental shops in town. It is also possible to swim in the river, as the Batwa is one of India’s cleanest rivers. There are also plenty of secluded spots for 420 lovers .

Where to sleep and eat when traveling to Orchha

The perfect itinerary for a weekend in dallas.

There's so much to see in downtown Dallas, including The Eye, a 30 foot sculpture by artist Tony ... [+] Tasset.

After scoring tickets to see Madonna at American Airlines Center last month, my two friends and I decided to spend a long weekend in Dallas – a city none of us had visited since before the pandemic and one that we were eager to get back to after learning it has the largest contiguous arts district in the country and the most buildings designed by Pritzker Architecture Award winners.

We planned a packed, three night itinerary that was rich in art, culture and food and is easy to replicate.

Here’s what we did:

Where to stay in Dallas

The Fairmont Gold Lounge at Fairmont Dallas.

There are so many great hotels in Dallas but we chose Fairmont Dallas because we are obsessed with Fairmont Gold. We knew we’d be able to have an included breakfast in the Gold Lounge and grab (also included) snacks, water bottles and Diet Cokes whenever we wanted. Plus, it would be a great place to just hang out together. It was a perfect choice and I loved my suite and the fact that we were able to easily and safely walk back to the hotel after the Madonna concert.

My amazing suite at JW Marriott Dallas Arts District.

I ended up spending the first night, though, at the new JW Marriott Dallas Arts District because I’m a big fan of the brand and I really wanted to see what this new hotel was like. Wow! The hotel is sleek and modern but so warm and welcoming and filled with amazing art that truly honors its local community. My suite was gigantic and homey and I could easily have spent the whole weekend there, especially because they also have a fantastic Executive Lounge.

It would be really hard to choose between the two hotels next time I visit and there’s a good chance I would once again spend a night or two at each one.

It's impossible not to be happy when you experience Acknowledge the Corn at Margaret's at JW ... [+] Marriott Dallas Arts District.

After landing at Love Field – which I highly recommend if possible because it’s less chaotic than Dallas Fort Worth and so convenient to downtown – I spent some time exploring JW Marriott and indulging in way too many sweets in the Executive Lounge.

I met my friends for dinner at Margaret’s, the hotel’s signature restaurant, and was blown away by the innovative seasonal dishes. Executive Chef Jonah Friedmann is committed to using local ingredients for the freshest flavors and we couldn’t stop talking about – or eating – the smile-inducing starter called Acknowledge the Corn. The corn-shaped jalapeno cornbread was served with delicious toppings but we would have been just as happy with only the honey butter, which we slathered all over it.

Amos Lee in concert with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.

After dinner, we walked off a few calories but the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center is so close to the hotel, we probably didn’t get in many steps. We were excited that our visit to Dallas coincided with Amos Lee in concert with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and we spent a magical evening listening to one of our favorite singer-songwriters. It was a really special experience getting to hear him accompanied by the beautiful, rich sound of DSO.

The Meyerson Symphony Center is so well-designed and the acoustics so crisp and clear, I think it would be impossible not to enjoy any show here. Plus, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra really does offer something for everyone, with upcoming collaborations including Country Hits: Songs from Nashville; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Concert; and Twist and Shout: The Music of the Beatles – A Symphonic Experience.

The outdoor sculpture garden at Rasher Sculpture Center.

After a hearty breakfast in the Executive Lounge – JW Marriott puts out quite a complimentary spread – we walked over to the Nasher Sculpture Center , which is celebrating its 20 th anniversary this year. Strolling through the galleries and the outside sculpture garden is a lovely way to start the day. You can ask about taking a tour when you get there or check out their website for detailed information about the pieces on display.

Dessert to go at the Zodiac at Neiman Marcus.

We had made a noon reservation to join the ladies who lunch at the legendary Zodiac in the original Neiman Marcus. Oh, if the walls could talk. The Zodiac has been serving up fine cuisine since 1953 and the food is as delicious as the stories that have come out of there. (We’ll never tell.) We were seated at the highly coveted Stanley’s Table, a private corner with its own attached living room area, where we did our own dishing over flavorful salads and the scrumptious popovers with strawberry butter for which The Zodiac is renowned. Of course, we couldn’t leave without a box of Neiman Marcus’ famous chocolate chip cookies.

Every Brilliant Thing at Dallas Theater Center's Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre.

There’s a good chance we would have indulged in a third popover if we hadn’t had to make the matinee of Every Brilliant Thing at the Dallas Theater Center . I had seen the show on Netflix and loved it but it was even more moving watching it in person with the whole audience participating. Small and intimate, the Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre was the perfect place to see this one man (Blake Hackler in a brilliant and heartwarming performance), interactive show and it’s a great venue to enjoy Dial M for Murder , which is currently playing there.

Delicious tuna cigars at Mansion Restaurant at Rosewood Mansion on TurtleCreek.

Since we had moved over to Fairmont Dallas after breakfast, we spent time relaxing in the Gold Lounge rehashing Every Brilliant Thing before taking an Uber to dinner at The Mansion Restaurant at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek , a luxurious uptown Dallas hotel that friends have been raving about for years. Once a private estate, the property has kept many of the home’s stunning details, and you can feel its rich history. In the gorgeous Mansion Restaurant, Executive Chef Charles Olalia is creating culinary masterpieces that celebrate regional flavors with a French flair. This is a very special place and I’d like to come back and experience the hotel overnight and the Mansion Bar — a local favorite — next time.

Everything's in bloom at Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

We woke up early to grab breakfast in the Gold Lounge before Uber-ing over to Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden , one of the city’s most beloved spots. It’s so vibrant and Instagrammable that we weren’t surprised to see wedding parties, families and Quinceaneras all posing for photos amidst the eye-popping flowers and greenery. This is how you get a dose of nature in a city.

Tea at The Adolphus is a Dallas tradition.

Because even we can only eat so much, we combined lunch with Tea at The Adolphus , a Dallas icon for more than a century. Served in The French Room of the luxury hotel, the three-course tea is a wonderful indulgence. The experience kicks off with a glass of bubbly and is followed by trays of finger sandwiches, scones and pastries, all paired with thoughtfully curated loose teas. We were so glad we didn’t have lunch beforehand.

The current exhibit at Dallas Museum of Art, "When You See Me: Visibility in Contemporary Art," ... [+] features The Ascendants XVIII (She Is Here And So Are You) by Wangari Mathenge.

From the Adolphus, we walked to the Dallas Museum of Art , stopping along the way to take a look at the giant eyeball (top photo) that holds a place of pride in the middle of the downtown. It’s a must see. The DMA is also a must see, featuring more than 25,000 works of art, from Indigenous American art to African art to so much more. You could easily spend a day here.

Homemade pasta at Paradiso.

We had a light dinner at Paradiso , a cute, leafy restaurant in Bishop Arts where woodfired pizzas and handmade pastas take a starring role. We really wanted to have dessert at Emporium Pies , whose sign reads, “Fine Pies for Fine Folks,” but we just didn’t have room. We did make a quick stop at The Wild Detectives because we can’t pass up a bookstore – especially one that’s also a bar in a renovated Craftsman home. We would have bought something because we’re all about supporting indie bookstores but we didn’t know if we’d be able to take it into American Airlines Center for the Madonna concert.

Madonna flying by us at American Airlines Center.

As it turned out, we could have easily gone back to the hotel for a while, then walked to the venue because Madonna didn’t start her 8 pm concert until 10:30. I’m glad we got to see her perform but I’m also glad we were within walking distance of the Fairmont so we didn’t have to deal with 20,000 people trying to get Ubers at the same time. And I’m especially glad that getting tickets for the concert gave us a reason to plan a fantastic weekend in Dallas. We’re already looking for an excuse to come back.
