In-home Wellness & Mobile Veterinary Care

Our mobile vet team brings high-quality, compassionate veterinary care to you, keeping your pets healthy in the comfort and convenience of your home.

Wellness Care

Because of the shorter lifespan of our pets, we stress the importance of semi-annual physical examinations (every 6 months) and age appropriate wellness testing with a veterinarian.  Thorough check-ups and preventative care can help alleviate serious health problems. Wellness testing includes bloodwork, fecal exams, and urinalysis to catch issues before they become a problem for your pet.   Preventing disease and early disease recognition will add quality and years to your pet’s life. We offer a wide range of veterinary services to keep your companions feeling their best.

More about Wellness Care

Semi-annual physical examinations.

These are extremely important to your pet’s good health. We pride ourselves on looking at your pet as an individual and then discuss medical treatment, health maintenance and lifestyle with you about what is best for the pet and your family. A full exam is done at every visit, and this includes an assessment of your pet’s eyes, ears, mouth and skin, as well as an evaluation which includes the following body systems: cardiac, respiratory, abdominal, urogenital, and lymphatic.

Wellness and Preventative Care Plans

We evaluate pets as the individuals they are.  Each pet’s care plan is   developed carefully after evaluating the pet’s history, lifestyle and risk factors. A pet care plan will typically include nutrition, customized vaccine protocols or titer testing, wellness testing, and behavior counseling, among other topics. We look comprehensively at the factors that go into your pet’s health and invite your questions and concerns.

Customized Vaccination Protocols

We believe less is more. Vaccines are necessary to prevent disease. However, vaccines can also cause problems for your pet’s immune system if not managed in conjunction with overall health. Once yearly, we will assess your pet’s risk factors and determine if your pet needs vaccines, and if so, which ones are necessary. It is important for you to have a clear understanding of which vaccines are offered, what your pet is at risk for, and the relative risk-to-benefit ratio of giving the vaccines to the long-term health of your companion.

Titer Testing

Titer testing is available and helps assess the need of the pet for a vaccine. In a titer test, a blood sample is tested to see if the pet has an appropriate antibody level against the disease in question. If the antibody level is adequate, we can rely on the pet’s immune system to combat the disease and skip the vaccine at that time.

Wellness Testing

Wellness testing includes blood work, fecal analysis, and urinalysis. Wellness testing gives individual baseline data that we can use later as a reference for faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment, as well as serving as a detector of early disease. Depending on the age and health of your pet, we can recommend which wellness profile is best suited.

Individualized Flea and Tick Programs

During in-home appointments, we can create an individualized treatment program with you to help keep your pet protected from fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and other potentially disease-bearing pests.  Because many of these pests are now adapting to warming climates in our service areas,  they are a year-round concern requiring a year-round plan. Heartworm, Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis are just a few of the very serious diseases that can be prevented through treatment programs.   We offer a variety of conventional and natural products and will recommend the products that work best for the protection and well-being of your pet.

Sick & Emergency Care

With skilled doctors and well-stocked transits, we are able to treat about 90% of common medical conditions during in-home appointments.  We can take samples for many types of laboratory services in your home and often have the results back to you in 24-48 hours.  Additionally, in-home appointments can provide our veterinarians with the opportunity to observe environmental conditions that may be related to pet illness. Our Receptionists and Patient Care Coordinators are trained to triage emergencies to help you get the best care needed for your pet.  Most things we can handle at home but in some cases we may recommend coming to one of our facilities or going to a specialty center based on the severity of the situation. For laboratory samples that we take at your home, we get pick-up twice a day from the same laboratories that all the local vet hospitals use, which gives us a quick turn-around for results.   We also have capabilities to run blood tests on site at our hospitals for more time-sensitive emergencies.  Visit our Emergency Services page to determine if you have an emergency and for contact information for area emergency veterinary affiliates.

Veterinary Counseling Services

We offer a wide scope of consultations for both acute and chronic conditions.  Pediatric care, allergies, senior health, lameness evaluations, second opinions, oncology, and behavior are just a few.   If you have any questions about your pet’s health, please don’t hesitate to contact us—you know your pet best and there are no bad questions when it comes to your pet’s health or your peace of mind.

More about Consultations

Chronic disease management.

HousePaws offers in-home consultations to help manage chronic diseases or conditions your pet may have and reduce the number of stressful trips he or she needs to make to the veterinary hospital. We can help manage conditions related to heart, kidney and liver diseases, diabetes, cancer, arthritic conditions and more, and make recommendations of how to keep your pet as healthy and comfortable as possible in their own environment. HousePaws is happy to offer second opinion on diagnosis on chronic conditions which can be challenging for both pet and pet parent, alike.

Behavioral Counseling

This is a frequently encountered need and one where our mobile practice has distinct benefits to clients. The ability to see the pet in her own environment is a significant benefit when developing a plan of action to defeat a behavior problem. We can provide advice regarding the correction of problems such as excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling, anxiety, and aggression. Most behavior problems can be solved with behavior modification techniques. Infrequently, natural alternatives or prescription medications may be needed for a short period of time.

Quality of Life

As pets age, their needs change, too. The benefits of a veterinary housecall allow us to see the environment that your pet lives in. We may see things that you may not which impact the every day quality of life of your pet, or conditions can can present special challenges to your pet, particularly as they age or their health changes.

Diabetic Home Management

Teaching the owner how to manage diabetes at home is important to having a stress-free diabetic pet. We offer training on obtaining your pet’s blood sample, and utilization of a home glucometer system. Frequent communication/consultation between the owner and veterinarian will optimize your pet’s success with this disease.

Dietary Counseling

We will provide guidance regarding your pet’s nutritional needs for each life stage, including dietary requirements for growth, weight maintenance and performance. A few of our veterinarians have advanced training in Chinese Medicine to take nutritional counseling to the next level!

Mobile Diagnostic and Treatment Services

HousePaws employs a range of diagnostic and treatment techniques in our mobile practice that can be tailored to the needs of you and your pet. In most of our practice areas, our doctors have access to state of the art mobile radiology equipment for advanced diagnostic efforts. A number of our doctors are certified in traditional healing methodologies as well as newer technologies such as cold laser therapy that we have found to have consistent positive results. We are constantly adding to our inventory of knowledge and equipment to offer you the most effective modern and traditional therapies to treat the extensive range of medical conditions we see every day.

HousePaws Cancellation Policy

HousePaws Appointment Cancellation Policy

We understand that there are times when you must miss an appointment due to emergencies or unexpected obligations for work or family.  Cancellations prevent us from treating another patient in need.

We request 12 hours notice for any cancellation.   If a mobile appointment is not cancelled at least 12 hours in advance we will require a cancellation fee equivalent to a travel fee for your area that must be paid prior to scheduling your next appointment.   After a second cancellation of a mobile appointment, without 12 hours notice, you will be responsible for the cost of a doctor’s exam for each pet scheduled and the travel fee.

In hospital appointments we also require a 12 hour cancellation notice. If an in hospital appointment is canceled for a second time in less than 24 hours you will be responsible for the cost of an exam for each pet we were scheduled to see.

We thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Find food that fits your pet’s needs

Find a dog food that fits your pet’s needs, find a cat food that fits your pet’s needs.

From grocery shopping to get-togethers, more and more things can be done online these days. Why should your pet’s visit to the veterinarian be any different? While a face-to-face appointment may be necessary in some cases, an online vet visit with your vet may be a time-friendly solution for many situations. Here’s how to get the most out of yours.

What can you do in an online visit with your vet?

  • Quick consultations: Has your pet been acting differently? Worried if they ate something toxic? Find a new rash? An online vet visit with your vet may be a great way to get quick medical guidance without packing your pet into the car. Using video on your mobile device, many questions or ailments can be evaluated — and even diagnosed — from home.
  • Prescription and pet food refills: For dogs or cats with special medical or dietary needs, your veterinarian may want to check in and make sure that things are still going to plan. Weight evaluations, energy levels, coat health, and dental health are all different aspects of a visit that you and your veterinarian may handle virtually. Combined with a veterinary pet food delivery service, you can make sure your furry friend is never left without the medicine or food they need.

Preparing for your virtual vet visit: what to have ready

Just because you’re staying at home doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be ready. Here are a few things to keep in mind before your pet’s appointment begins:

  • A reliable internet connection: There’s nothing more aggravating than technical difficulties. You may want to test out your connection ahead of time just to make sure there are no issues on your end.
  • A good place & time: Nothing slows down a virtual meeting like unnecessary noise and distractions. When scheduling a virtual visit, make sure you’re able to give the vet your undivided attention, and try and pick a room where you won’t be competing with outside noise, shouting children, etc.
  • Any useful images/video: If you can send helpful visual aides ahead of time, or at least have them ready to send during the appointment. Some online services do not offer video consultations, so if you are doing a veterinarian live chat, sending a few key photos can greatly improve your vet’s ability to help.
  • The usual: Just like any checkup, your vet will want to know about any recent changes to your pet’s behavior or diet, along with any vaccination records, prescriptions or concerns you have to share.

While it’s not a replacement for a hands-on exam, an online veterinarian visit can be a convenient game changer when it comes to caring for your pet. There are a variety of options and services out there, so give your veterinarian a call and see what options are available to you.

Services Offered by a House Call Vet

Caring for your pets when they are sick can be tough. This is mainly due to the fact that pets cannot tell you why they feel sick. What makes it even tougher is when your pet won’t budge from his bed because he feels too sick or can’t move very well. For these kinds of situations, you will need mobile veterinary services.

We have a mobile veterinarian with a mobile clinic who can bring our veterinary equipment and supplies wherever they are needed. He can address the vet service needs of residents in our practice area. This kind of service is especially beneficial to those who cannot bring their pets to the vet clinic.

Before your Visit.

Gather Medical History

Send us all previous medical records for your pet(s) or ask your previous Veterinarian to email us the records to:  [email protected] . Reviewing your pet’s records helps us better understand their health history and provide them with the best care.

Complete Pre-Visit Documents and Questionnaires

We will be reaching out to you via email weeks or days prior to your pets scheduled appointment.  Key information we need to make your pet’s veterinary experience ideal includes medical history details, nutrition information, and any special concerns you may have about your pet.

A key benefit to in home veterinary services is reducing the Fear/Anxiety/Stress complex your pet experiences.  Please make sure that we have all information concerning your pet’s levels of Fear/Anxiety/Stress.  With this information we can plan our approach and send you mild oral sedatives for use with your loved one (if warranted) to make for a much improved experience for all.

Prepare Area

We can perform the examination and all of our services in any area of your home. We have found that pets prefer the living room ground or couch, but we can go wherever they are most comfortable. Even though we come prepared with towels, treats and toys, you can also have their favorite toy or a familiar blanket handy to help them stay even more calm and relaxed.

Collect Fecal/Urine Sample (if applicable)

If we are screening your pet for intestinal parasites, please have a fresh fecal sample ready. It is recommended to get a fecal test done once a year. If we are performing a urinalysis on a cat, please pick up their litter box 3 hours before our visit.

Withhold Food (if blood samples are needed)

If a fasted blood sample is needed, we will notify you via email/text before your appointment, so you can make sure to withhold their food for 12 hours before blood is drawn.

pet vet home visit

During Visit: 1st Half.

Please make sure you (and any pets) are available during your scheduled appointment time. In the rare instance where there is a delay caused from traffic or an emergency situation, we will promptly notify you with a more accurate appointment window. If you are not available when we arrive or need to change your appointment, please notify us as soon as possible and make sure you are aware of our   Cancellation Policy .

Greeting & Pet Introduction

Upon arrival, the first thing we do is shower your pet with love and treats. After becoming their new best friend, we can work with them in a relaxed setting where they remain calm and behave normally.  If at this time your pet is experiencing a higher level of Fear/Anxiety/Stress than necessary, with your permission we can administer a mild and safe sedative.

Services and Medical History Review

While giving your pet lots of attention, we will confirm with you which service you have requested (Wellness plan, House Call, etc.).  To provide your pet with the best care possible, we thoroughly review their medical history with you, gain a complete understanding of their previous health or any prior issues, and actively listen to any of your concerns. We also take the time to answer any and all of your initial questions.

Nutritional Planning

Since an animal’s diet, weight and nutritional intake are the most controllable areas of their long term health, your vet will create an individualized diet plan for your pet by calculating proper portion sizing for food/treats and recommending food types after factoring in their age, lifestyle & health

During Visit 2nd Half.

Examination

By the time your vet starts the examination, your pet should be relaxed and comfortable with the doctor without feeling added pressure or stress. We will have all of the necessary diagnostic equipment to perform a full exam, vaccinations & any additional services wherever your pet is the most comfortable, whether in their bed, on the couch or on the living room floor.

Additional Services

Our vets can do everything from basic tests, like fecal & heartworm screening, to advanced diagnostic testing such as blood panels, urinalysis, among others.

After the veterinarian has complete their work, they also take as much time as you need to answer all of your questions. We want every pet parent to be as aware, involved & educated as possible.

Recommendations & Follow-Up Plan

Before leaving, your vet will provide you with any necessary treatment and care recommendations moving forward. You will also receive a  Home PetVet Report  giving a detailed health overview, along with educational materials regarding any issues that were uncovered – within 2 days.

We will also guide you through getting signed up on MyVetStore Online.  This will allow you to purchase pet and veterinary products straight from a distributor.  Clients on Wellness Plans will also receive their appropriate discounts.  If interested we can also guide you through setting up Hills and/or Purina Pet Nutrition memberships.

At the very end of the house call we will present your invoice and receive payment. Euthanasia fees will be collected at the beginning of euthanasia appointments (works best this way).  If you are on a Wellness Plan we will refund your appointment deposit and no payment is due (unless there were services rendered or products dispensed not included in the Wellness Plan).  If you are not on a Wellness Plan we will collect payment in full (minus the appointment deposit). To ensure you can afford the best medical care for your pet Home PetVet offers a monthly payment plan if you desire.

After Visit.

Chat with Your Vet

After your Home PetVet Visit, we understand some pet parents might think of additional questions or have concerns about potential side effects of any administered vaccines or medications, which is why we give you access to communicate directly with your vet via a telemedicine call within 1 week after your appointment. Wellness plan clients have the added benefit of multiple telemedicine calls throughout the year. All clients are welcome and encouraged to reach out to us via text or email at any time, no charge.

Receive Test Results

All of the diagnostic results will be fully interpreted along with added educational material, so you have a clear and comprehensive understanding of all findings. These reports will be emailed to you.  Your vet will also be available to answer any of your questions or concerns.

Delivery of Any Items

If you need to receive any preventatives (for flea/ticks or for heartworm), medications, supplements, or food after your appointment, it will be delivered right to your door.

Referrals to Specialists

If your vet determines that it’s in the best interest of your pet to see a specialist, we have partnerships with local veterinarians specializing in all areas (orthopedics, cardiac, dermatology, ophthalmology, behavior, dentistry, etc.). We will provide you with a referral, submit your pet’s medical records to the specialist, and work closely with them to facilitate any long term treatment plans.

Continued Care

Pet parents who are looking to save money, enhance their pet’s care and get a ton of extra perks can continue on a Wellness Plan (if not already signed up). Once you experience the Wellness Package standard of care, you’ll never want anything less!

Familiarity Safety Convenience Mobile Comprehensive Care Familiarity

Familiarity.  Pets often experience fear and trauma when taken from the security of their home to a veterinary hospital. In addition, pets are typically “not themselves” in an unfamiliar or uncomfortable setting, making it difficult for veterinarians to evaluate pet behavior during examinations for lameness and behavioral counseling. Home Pet Vet makes it possible for your dog, cat, or small animal to be in their own environment where they are more comfortable and relaxed.

  • Less stress on your pet(s)
  • Your pet is examined and treated in familiar surroundings
  • We can examine and treat your pet in your home, or in our mobile veterinary exam room
  • Ideal for pets who dislike traditional hospital visits

Safety.  By keeping your pet at home, your pet can avoid being exposed to stresses that may be present in a veterinary waiting room. Young and old pets are especially susceptible with weakened immune systems. You can also avoid encountering larger or more aggressive animals.

  • Reduces exposure to other pets and illnesses
  • Safe, secure setting with complete veterinary control
  • Clean and sanitary mobile exam room

How Can A Home Visit Vet Help Your Pet’s Health?

How Can A Home Visit Vet Help Your Pets Health

A home visit vet can help with the problems of families with pets. A family can have a hectic schedule that they may neglect their pet’s health. With this concern, more families are now turning to the option of scheduling these home veterinarians. Also, if your pet is having some difficulties getting disciplined while traveling, this method proves useful. In addition,  some vets can examine your puppy at home  for any signs of diseases and give appropriate medication. No matter what the age of your pet is, you’ll surely get to see the differences between a home visit and a clinic visit. What other ways can these vets help your pets?

What Sets Home And Clinic Vet Visit Apart?

If you want to know the difference between a home visit vet and a clinic-based one, you should check their approaches. A pet may have calm behavior during a vet clinic visit due to the change of environment. Thus, it creates a barrier from the real health needs of your pet. That said, a veterinarian on-call can check your furry friend’s behavior at home. It is essential to have a full check-up when your pet is relaxing. This process will help the veterinarian check any signs of disease or injury. Being at home also creates a personal bond between the pet and the veterinarian. It can benefit from future visits and can also  allow the vet to give the best recommendations for your pet’s health .

Why Do Pets Need A Home Visit Vet?

The benefits of getting a professional vet to visit your home are quite a lot. Aside from its convenience, the pet owner can also get specific treatments for their dogs. Some veterinarians can give dental cleaning for  pets with a severe case of cavities and plaque buildup . It is also less stressful for families with many pets. Moreover, a home visit vet can check all of the pets with the least amount of time. For families who also have a new pet, it may be beneficial for new puppies or kittens. It may also help older dogs with difficulties in walking or breathing. Lastly, a pet owner has more security, knowing that the pet is at their home instead of leaving them elsewhere.

Some Limitations For Home Visits

Future of home veterinarians.

With the challenges previously mentioned, the future of home veterinarians is still developing. Developments of less disease transmission are one of the goals of home visits.  Vets are also looking towards the use of digital technology for their practice . Digital imaging, 3D technology, as well as VR, are one of the rising trends in medicine. Data protection is also one of the main concerns for pet owners as well. More pet owners are looking forward to mobile vets housing the right surgery equipment for their pet’s health.

Pet dogs and cats have outnumbered newborns, like family: people now treat dogs and cats as family members. they receive the same medical treatments and tests as humans do, a veterinary association official said.

The number of pet dogs and cats in Taiwan has officially outnumbered the number of human newborns last year, data from the Ministry of Agriculture’s pet registration information system showed.

As of last year, Taiwan had 94,544 registered pet dogs and 137,652 pet cats, the data showed. By contrast, 135,571 babies were born last year.

Demand for medical care for pet animals has also risen. As of Feb. 29, there were 5,773 veterinarians in Taiwan, 3,993 of whom were for pet animals, statistics from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency showed.

In 2022, the nation had 3,077 pediatricians. As of last year, 1,880 doctors joined the specialist physician program for children under three years old, who were in charge of caring for 195,552 children in 1,048 medical institutions.

The percentage of veterinarians that specialize in pet animals are higher in metropolitan areas or cities with tech professionals.

Hsinchu City, where the Hsinchu Science and Industrial Park is located, has the highest percentage of animal medical specialists.

The percentages in the six special municipalities are as follows: 84.3 percent in New Taipei City, 78.4 percent in Kaohsiung, 76.7 percent in Taoyuan, 76.4 percent in Taipei, 76.1 percent in Taichung and 70 percent in Tainan.

The nation has about 1,800 animal hospitals, but the number could potentially increase to 2,000 by the end of this year or next year, Taipei Veterinary Medical Association chairman Yang Hsiao-po (楊孝柏) said.

On average, each veterinarian cares for 575 animals, compared with 2,500 in Japan and 4,000 in the US, he said.

The rising demand for medical care for pet animals has also motivated more animal hospitals to increase investment in medical facilities, he added.

“In the past, veterinarians could open an animal hospital with just a table and a stethoscope. A large percentage of people treated their pets as nothing more than animals. If a dog or a cat vomited, you only needed to prescribe some medications, and if it did not work, pet owners just came back for more visits,” Yang said.

“People now treat dogs and cats as family members, and they could live as long as humans,” he said. “Animals now receive the same medical treatment as humans do. If they throw up, you have to do blood tests and an ultrasound to determine [whether] they have gastroenteritis.”

Not wanting to have children is only one of the reasons why more people choose to become pet owners, Yang said.

“Raising dogs and cats has healing effects, and people would choose to have pets to accompany their elderly parents so that their parents can have a normal and more social life,” he said.

What Our Clients Say

Review

I decided to switch to home vet care over going into a clinic. Doctor Dugger and Jenn came to my home and spoke with me about some concerns I had with my dog. They were both friendly and knowledgeable. As a dog trainer and someone who’s worked with dogs professionally for over 14 years, I found Dr. Dugger to be very knowledgeable even when I had questions about anxiety / behavior. Dr. Dugger and Jenn were patient and kind with my dog and were able to handle him without any issues and without scaring him. In my opinion, home veterinary care should be the norm. It’s less stressful on your pet. I highly recommend Dr. Dugger!
