In the city’s surrounding areas are some of the most talented artisans and painters in the DR, while Santiago Carnival ranks among the most revered in the country, with the most bejeweled handmade devil costumes after La Vega’s. To boot, nature has blessed the province with fertile soils that grow the world’s finest tobacco, home to 90 percent of the largest cigar plantations and factories and earning Santiago the nickname “Cigar Country.” Puro aficionados will also find all the premium brand factories near the city center at Tamboril, offering free daily tours and exclusive shopping opportunities.

10 Things to Do: Santiago, Dominican Republic

1. Play Ball . More than a sport, baseball is a way of life. From October to January, Santiagueros rush to El Estadio Cibao to support the hometown Águilas Cibaeñas, winners of 20 Dominican titles.

2. Enjoy a Puro . Learn about the art of cigar-making—from the cutting of the tobacco leaf to the rolling of the cigar—with a visit to El Museo del Tabaco. Housed in a former Victorian cigar warehouse, museum exhibits include the rustic tools used to shape cigars along with old photos of workers.

3. Celebrate Carnaval—Dominican Style . The month-long celebration, which ends on or near Dominican Independence Day (February 27), mixes African traditions with Catholic rituals. If you miss it, check out the masks and costumes and learn about the traditions at the Tomás Morél Folklore Museum on Calle Restauración.

4. Try the sancocho . This thick stew found throughout Latin America is served with rice and avocado and traditionally made with yucca, plantains, yautía , and sweet potatoes. The Dominicans give it a special flair with seasoned beef, chicken and pork. Try it at El Pez Dorado restaurant on Calle del Sol.

5 . Dance Merengue. Dominicans live and breathe merengue, a blend of Spanish and African rhythms played on accordion, guitar, tambora , guira , and marimba . You can join the dance, which was officially named a symbol of national identity during the reign of Rafael Trujillo (1930 to 1961), at Francifol on Calle del Sol.

6 . Explore Calle del Sol . Spend an afternoon hunting for bargains on one of Santiago ’s most fascinating streets. The artisan shops of Mercado Modelo offer a variety of rustic handicrafts. Keep an eye out for larimar , a light blue, semi-precious stone found only in the Dominican Republic .

7 . Enjoy a Panoramic View . The Monument  to the Heroes of the Restoration stands 230 feet  (70 meters) tall on a hilltop overlooking the city. Originally constructed  by Trujillo to honor himself, and renamed at the fall of his regime, it boasts murals by renowned Spanish artist José  Vela Zanetti.

8. Go Back in Time. A horse-drawn carriage ride is the perfect way to take in the city’s Victorian and Spanish colonial architecture. Two must-see sights include the Catedral Santiago Apóstol, built in the late nineteenth century, and the Centro de Recreo, formally a gathering place for Santiago ’s high society.

9. See Contemporary Art . El Centro León on Avenida 27 de Febrero is one of the premier spaces to see the diversity of Dominican art—both old and new. Beyond the exhibits depicting traditional Dominican life, it offers many classes and workshops for the public.

10. Stroll through Parque Duarte. Popular among locals, this small plaza is a great place to sip a refreshing yun-yun (a Dominican icee) and watch the day unfold.

Bike riders on a joyride through the countryside of Dominican Republic.

Rollicking turquoise waves, swaying palms and some of the finest rum on the planet – the Dominican Republic is just as famous for its natural beauty as it is for the abundant all-inclusive resorts that call the island home.

While there’s no shortage of places with swim-up bars built for serene weeks of lounging by the water, getting off hotel property is one of the best ways to truly take in the Dominican experience.

Spending some time in major cities – like Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros – is ideal for sampling the island culture, while getting off the beaten path and exploring less developed natural enclaves will reward you with waterfalls, whale watching and flora-filled rainforest hikes.

Traveling from region to region is fairly common – you’ll find Dominicans commuting for business, going to visit family in the country or navigating their way to school. Taxis can be found just about everywhere, and ride-sharing services are available in the three major cities: Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata . Public transportation in the form of bus service is both an affordable and memorable way to experience island life.

If you aren't sure where to begin exploring everything the Dominican Republic has to offer, here's a list of eight can't-miss sites.

Aerial view of two people walking down a tropical island beach

1. Punta Cana is best for casinos and resort life

When most people think of the Dominican Republic, it’s Punta Cana  they have in mind. It’s the resort capital of the island, with an avalanche of all-inclusives catering to the bottomless-bar set.

But beyond the tourist-focused, theme park–level accommodations, Punta Cana plays host to beaches that rival some of the Caribbean 's best. Punta Cana’s 97km (60 miles) of coastline face both Atlantic and Caribbean waters, inviting you to hop on a catamaran, go deep-sea fishing or get lost in a book while baking under the warm sun.

The area also has a vibrant party scene that pulsates late into the night, thanks to the various resorts’ casinos and clubs.

2. Santo Domingo is best for culture buffs

The gritty hustle and bustle of city life collide with vibrant Dominican culture in the island’s capital (“El Capital”), Santo Domingo . It’s one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities, making it ideal for history aficionados looking to explore colonial-era architecture and take a deep dive into the country’s past.

You'll find the Zona Colonial in the city's center, which the island's oldest church, European fortress, monastery, university and hospital all call home. But step outside the cobblestone streets of the Zona, and a metropolitan joyride awaits, with elegant restaurants, raucous nightclubs and plenty of cultural institutions to add to your itinerary.

Reserve a table at the elegant El Mesón de la Cava for dinner in an ancient Taino cave, and afterward, hit the edgy, strobe-lit club  Jet Set ;  Onno’s , a local bar chain, is also a popular spot for a casual night of beer and cocktails.

3. Samaná is best for whale watching

The Samaná Peninsula is where the unspoiled natural beauty of the Dominican Republic mingles with friendly small-town sensibilities – a stark contrast to the glitzy resorts of Punta Cana and the bustling grind of Santo Domingo.

The capital of this peninsular province is the eponymous Samaná, located in northern Samaná Bay. Eco-tourism is popular here, with one major star attraction: whales. The best time to go is between January and March, when thousands of humpback whales descend upon the bay to give birth to their calves.

El Museo de las Ballenas (Whale Museum) in the neighboring town of Salinas is an attraction in its own right, with guided tours of marine mammal exhibits, handcrafted souvenirs and a full 12m (40-ft) skeleton of a humpback whale found along the rocky coastline between Las Galeras and Santa Bárbara de Samaná in 1993.

4. Sosúa is best for late-night partying

By day, Sosúa is your typical sleepy beach town – large swaths of sandy shores gently lapped by the Atlantic’s cerulean waves. It’s also the island’s dairy and cheese capital, courtesy of a 1938 presidential decree that allowed 100,000 Jewish refugees to settle in the area.

Some 800 people took the offer and launched a dairy and cheese factory, many of whose products you can purchase today.

While this all seems quite bucolic and mellow, Sosúa by night is an entirely different beast. After dark, the main strip (Calle Pedro Clisante) closes off to traffic, and revelers spill out onto the streets from the resident bars, lounges and nightclubs,  many of which feature local live music, including the Blue Ice Piano Bar and the popular Jolly Roger .

But a word of caution: the area is also known for sex tourism. Dominican and Haitian sex workers are known to approach and proposition tourists in the area, so practice a fair amount of caution.

The 12 best beaches in the Dominican Republic

A closeup of a woman kiteboarding in the ocean

5. Cabarete is best for thrill seekers

Sure, sipping cocktails by the beach is nice. But there’s only so much relaxing you can do, right? When you’re ready to shift your vacation into high gear , set your coordinates for Cabarete , a beach town located on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic.

Founded in 1835 by a British merchant and former enslaver, Cabarete is now an adrenaline junkie’s dream, a haven for kayakers, snorkelers and wind and kite surfers (several international competitions are hosted here). It’s also a popular spot for avid surfers, thanks to some of the best winds and tides in the Caribbean.

A woman standing in front of the cascading El Limón waterfall

6. El Limón waterfall is the perfect adventurous hike

Tighten your shoelaces and summon your balance – the 2.4km (1.5-mile) trail to get to  Cascada El Limón  is mostly wet and rocky terrain that visitors traverse on horseback. But it can also be accessed by foot – you’ll cross rivers and hop over muddy rocks to make it to your destination, so be sure to pack some rubber footwear.

After a 30 to 60-minute walk or horseback ride from the small town of El Limón, you’ll arrive at your destination – a spectacular 46m (150-ft) waterfall that flows into the cool waters of an expansive swimming hole. You can book a tour with one of the companies in Las Terrenas , a 30-minute drive from El Limón; the excursion typically includes a guide, horse and lunch.

7. Bayahibe is best for scuba diving

Situated on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic, Bayahibe is a former fishing village turned quiet resort town with access to some of the island’s most lively (and spectacular) beaches.

Just a few miles from town, you’ll find Bayahibe Beach , Dominicus Beach and boat launches that ferry you to Isla Saona , a national park that’s more booze-cruise layover than uninhabited sanctuary. Your best bet: stay in Bayahibe and take advantage of one of some 20 different dive sites in the area – it’s one of the most active areas for scuba divers in the country. If scuba diving isn’t in the cards, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding or snorkeling the reefs instead.

8. Jarabacoa offers mountainous hikes and whitewater river rafting

Jarabacoa is the antithesis of the Dominican Republic’s oceanside towns. So when you’ve had your fill of lounging on the beach, head to Jarabacoa’s soaring peaks for verdant hikes, whitewater rafting on a roaring river and warm mugs of irresistible Dominican coffee on cool, misty mountain mornings.

Known as the City of Everlasting Spring, Jarabacoa has no shortage of activities: waterfall hikes, rope-bridge crossings over the Jimenoa River, plentiful rounds of golf and visits to the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria del Evangelio.

The area is also home to the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve , where more than 600 species of flora and fauna populate one of the most humid areas on the island (you can arrange a tour of the reserve before you visit). Jarabacao is also known for its Carnaval festivities in February – one of the most famous celebrations in the Dominican Republic.

Just 40 minutes outside the kite surfing town of Cabarete, lies Rio Yasica. This quiet turquoise river is a hub for water-sports including kayaking, tubing , canyoning and paddle boarding.

Full and half day excursions to this hidden gem in Jamao al Norte are offered from Cabarete all year round.

We joined a 4 hour excursion which included 3 hours on the water followed by a short hike to the home of a local family who had prepared a traditional Dominican lunch for us.

Jamao al Norte truly is off the beaten path in the Dominican Republic, so if you have time I would suggest joining one of the hiking excursions in the area.

It’s likely you’ll only come across locals, and might just be the highlight of your trip to the Dominican Republic.

Where to Stay in Cabarete

Hotel villa taina.

Hotel Villa Taina , situated on the beachfront of Cabarete , this resort caters for families, and includes plenty of opportunities for kiteboarding, yoga, paddle boarding, and windsurfing.

It is also centrally located on the main street for those who want to enjoy the nightlife and restaurants in the laid back Caribbean beach town.

Natura Cabana Boutique Hotel and Spa

Natura Cabana is a yoga retreat just 3 miles away from the heart of Cabarete.

Every room is different (there are even treehouses ), and it is perfect for a romantic getaway!

2. Laguna Gri Gri, Dominican Republic

Located not far from Puerto Plata, is Laguna Gri Gri, a fresh water lagoon surrounded by a mangrove forest .

Perfect for nature lovers, Laguna Gri Gri is one of the Dominican Republic’s major bird sanctuaries .

From Puerto Plata it’s easy to join a day trip that takes you on a guided boat tour through the area.

The visit includes a trip to Cueva de Las Golondrinas ( Cave of the Swallows ) to see the stalactites and stalagmites and then stop at the magical Playa Caletón.

Where you can enjoy a drink and a swim in one of Rio San Juan’s most blissful sandy white beaches.

The day tour also includes a stop at the amazing Blue lagoon where you can swim in the crystal clear waters.

3. Playa Grande, Dominican Republic

Golden sands and abundant greenery characterise this mile long stretch of beach between Cabarete and Puerto Plata .

Framed by rugged cliffs, Playa Grande is nestled in acres of pristine Caribbean jungle, and is the perfect place to try the Dominican Republic’s fresher than fresh seafood and tropical fruit juices.

This enchanting Caribbean coastline is also perfect for adventurers.

Those who want to whale watch, kite surf, windsurf or take part in a sunset sail will love the natural playground of Playa Grande.

Top Tip: The best time to visit Playa Grande is between December and April to avoid the rainy season.

4. Colourful streets of Los Pepines, Santiago de los Caballeros

The centre of the Dominican Republic’s second largest city, Santiago de los Caballeros is full of street art murals and colourful houses.

In 2017, the Mayor of Santiago encouraged local artists to work with some of the biggest canvases of their lives – the buildings and walls of the Los Pepines neighbourhood.

He brought in talent from across the city, and within a few months the area took on a new life and became one of the best cities to visit in Dominican Republic.

The main streets to visit are Calle Cuba and Calle 16 Agosto , and my favourite part was how excited the locals were to have us there taking photos of their neighbourhood.

We spent an hour wandering the streets seeing how many of the murals my colourful striped dress matched with (leave your guesses in the comments!).

Where to Stay in Santiago de los Caballeros

Hodelpa Centro Plaza is centrally located with a fitness centre, meeting rooms and a free airport shuttle in one of the best destinations in the Dominican Republic.

5. Laguna El Dudu, Dominican Republic

This hidden gem is often included in the world’s top 10 natural lagoons. Located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Dudú Lagoon is an ecological park open daily to the public.

Activities include visiting Taíno cave , swimming in La Cueva cenote , and snorkelling or scuba diving in the main cenote Dudú lagoon.

For thrill seekers, there is a 20 meter high zip line above Dudu Lagoon, which requires the adventurous to jump off into the crystal clear waters of the lagoon.

There is a small fee for this, but it’s a breathtaking experience and well worth it.

After you’ve enjoyed the water, you can relax at the restaurant or in one of the many hammocks found dotted around the ecological park.

TOP TIP: Scuba divers need to book at least three days in advance to explore the underground caves.

Laguna El Dudu Visitor Information

Entrance fee: 250RD$

Zip line fee: 50RD$

Opening hours: Open daily from 9am to 5.30pm

Address: Carretera Nagua Cabrera, La Entrada, Cabrera, Dominican Republic

Phone number: (809) 697-5534 or (809) 713-3745 or (829) 355-8935

6. Bahia de las Aguilas, Dominican Republic

One of the Dominican Republic’s best kept secrets is Bahia de las Aguilas (Eagles Bay).

Located in the south west of the country, close to the border of Haiti , Bahia de las Aguilas is found in Jaragua National Park .

The area is deserted, devoid of any hotels, restaurants, shops and even a proper road.

The journey from Santo Domingo takes around 8 hours , but be prepared for a bumpy ride for the last hour or so through the desert like landscape.

Often dubbed one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Bahia de las Aguilas is a five-mile white sand beach with turquoise clear waters and a rocky coastline covered in cacti.

The landscape is unique, and the best way to explore it is by taking a boat tour and sailing along the coast.

If you want to make the day extra special why not take an airplane day tour to Bahia de las Águilas from Punta Cana , Bavaro or Bayahibe .

Where to Stay in Bahia de Las Aguilas

We only spent one night in Bahia de las Aguilas but I would suggest staying at least two or three nights to make the journey to this off the beaten track area worth it.

Accommodation is limited in Jaragua National Park but we found a glamping eco lodge called Rancho Tipico .

We stayed in large tents on the beach fitted with double beds and had outdoor eco showers powered by solar energy.

Note there is electricity by generator only, meaning no WiFi but if you really want to go off the grid, I can’t think of a better place for it.

7. Laguna de Oviedo, Jaragua National Park

Laguna de Oviedo  (Oviedo Lagoon) is the off the beaten path destination in the Dominican Republic that surprised me the most.

Located in the Jaragua National Park , this 27 square-kilometre lagoon, is the largest in the country, and has three times the salt content of the sea.

Laguna de Oviedo is a prime bird watching area, and includes 60 aquatic bird species, crabs, iguanas, herons, flamingoes, pelicans, parrots and seagulls and even 11 different species of bats.

The area’s most noteworthy animals are the rhinoceros iguana and  Ricord’s iguana , both endemic and endangered.

The best way to visit is by taking a boat tour of the lagoon .

Just remember to take a hat as there is no shade on the boat! This tour is also excellent as it includes pickup from your hotel, and it combines Laguna Oviedo with Bahia de las Aguilas !

8. Los Patos, Barahona

One of the Dominican Republic’s hidden treasures is the small fishing village of Los Patos in the Barahona Province.

Located less than two hours away from Bahia de las Aguilas , a trip to Los Patos can be combined with a stay in the nearby city of Paraiso .

The area is known for being home to Los Patos river , which at 61 meters in length (depending on the tide) is the shortest river in the Dominican Republic and one of the shortest rivers in the world.

Swimming in this chilly river is a must for an visitors to the area.

Other things to do in Los Patos include surfing on Playa Los Patos and trying some of the fresh fish at the waterside restaurant.

Top Tip: During the weekends, Los Patos is full of locals, but during the week there are hardly any visitors so it’s easy to have the place to yourself.

9. Playa San Rafael, Barahona

Located right off the Barahona Enriquillo Coastal Highway is Playa San Rafael.

Here, the sparkling turquoise Caribbean Sea, meets the white pebble stone beaches and majestic mountains of Barahona.

This postcard perfect location of Playa San Rafael is great for surfers and the area includes plenty of food and drink vendors for visitors.

If you want to explore more of the region join a half day trekking tour around the area.

The San Rafael Coast tour is recommended as it includes hiking off the beaten track as well as snorkelling and visiting one of the most pristine beaches in Barahona.

All in 4.5 hours and the cost is only 1000RD$ without food, or 1350 RD$ if you want to stop at a traditional restaurant for the local fisherman’s catch of the day.

Where to Stay in Playa San Rafael

Hotel La Saladilla Beach Club is a beachfront property that is the perfect base for excursions to San Rafael, Bahia de las Aguilas , Laguna Oviedo and Los Patos and is where to stay Dominican Republic.

9 Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana

W ith over 1,000 miles of coastline and some of the prettiest beaches in North America, the Dominican Republic is a popular beach destination. With convenient flights from the U.S. and Canada, Punta Cana is one of the most popular areas in the Dominican Republic. Most travelers head to an all-inclusive resorts during their trip to DR, making for an easy beachy getaway. However, there are several things to keep in mind. Here are the top things to know before visiting Punta Cana.

  • Punta Cana International Airport PUJ is one of the largest airports in the Caribbean with service in-between 26 international destinations.
  • Cabs can be expensive so arrange for a transfer before arriving
  • Spanish isn’t necessary, though it’s nice to use some common phases.
  • Changing money isn’t necessary however cash for tips is necessary.
  • There are several resort areas in Punta Cana, like Bavaro, Cap Cana and La Romana.
  • DR boasts 200 Beaches
  • Nude Sunbathing Isn’t a Thing in DR
  • The Dominican Republic features a National Park, perfect for an all-day excursion.
  • Bottled Water is a Must in DR

How to Get to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the second-largest island in the Caribbean. It offers several international airports. After several trip to DR over the years, I am sharing the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

The Punta Cana International Airport

With service from several international carriers, including direct flights from Britain, France and South America. U.S. travelers will find American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

WiFi is available, and restrooms are located near the immigration line.

A valid passport with more than six months before expiration is required for your trip is required. e aren’t required to enter the country. A 30-day tourist visa will be stamped into your passport upon entry. The Dominican Republic Entry fee is included in your flight.

The Dominican Republic requires U.S. Passengers to fill out an online Immigration form before they arrive. Before my last trip in December 2023, my airline sent me a link (Delta Airlines).

On departure, U.S. residents can opt for the automated immigration lines. You will just scan your passport and pass through a gate.

The Punta Cana Airport features enhanced security measures with pat-downs. A TSA pre-check line isn’t available.

The departure area is fully air-conditioned and features a duty-free shop and another shop specializing in Dominican Republic products, like rum and cigars.

Find American fast food in the departures area, like Wendy’s, Sbarro, Nathan’s, Cinnabon and Baskin-Robbins. Also find a bar for pre-departure cocktails.

Find a small play structure for younger kids. The Punta Cana International Airport also features a nursing room.

Other International Airports in The Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo International Airport (SDQ) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Santiago International Airport (STI) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) –With service from the U.S. on American Airlines, United Airlines and Jet Blue Airlines.

Resort Review: Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Airport transfers.

When leaving the arrivals hall at the Punta Cana International Airport, a line of cab drivers will greet you. I recommend arranging transportation with your resort or hotel before arriving. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

There are several transportation and tour counters in the area. I usually check in with my transportation company to find my driver. Often they are waiting a short distance from the airport and pull up after you arrive.

Most cars in the Dominican Republic are air-conditioned.

What Language is Used in the Dominican Republic

The Dominicans speak Spanish though most understand and speak some English. Knowing some basic Spanish is helpful, especially the basics.

Hola = Hello

Buenos Días = Good Morning

Buenos Noches = Good Night

Muchas Gracias = Thank you very much

What Money is  Used in the Dominican Republic

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (RD$). Though the U.S. Dollar is widely accepted. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Change will most likely be given in U.S. dollars. For those who want local currency, ATMs are located in hotel lobbies as well as the airport.

Credit Cards are widely accepted throughout the Dominican Republic. It’s advised to use a credit card for large purchases like lodging. Though use cash for souvenirs and small purchases. Tips are accepted and appreciated in DR from spa services to daily maid service.

Phone Service in the Dominican Republic

Since I travel internationally, I have a global plan through my U.S. carrier. When I land I just switch over to the local service provider. I just use my data to check email and messages. The provider I used throughout my trip to DR was Altice.

Most all-inclusive resorts offer extensive WiFi for their guests. Most of the time this service is included. This is one of the top things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Where to Stay in Punta Cana

Most resorts in the Punta Cana area are all-inclusive resorts. Travelers will find everything from luxurious and laid-back adult all-inclusives to family resorts with waterparks.

Some resorts are divided into an adults-only side with an adjoining family side, each with separate restaurants, pools and gathering places. Other resorts offer buildings dedicated to adults or families.

With several different resort areas in Punta Cana, visitors will choose from laid-back La Romana to buzzy Bavaro. Cap Cana boasts Juanilla Beach, one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

Near Punta Cana, Cap Cana boasts wide white sand beaches with lots of palm trees. A resort community, Cap Cana features the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. Both of these properties opened in 2021 and offer a luxurious all-inclusive resort experience.

Nearby is Sanctuary Cap Cana, another luxury all-inclusive resort. Located on Juanillo Beach, it offers pristine white sand with mature palm trees.

Cap Cana is located just south of the Punta Cana International Airport. The Cap Cana Marina offers boat excursions. This area is ideal for watersports like kayaking, SUP boarding and sailing.

La Romana offers a quieter resort experience. It’s located west of the Punta Cana International Airport and along the Chavón River.

I stayed at the Hilton La Romana, an all-inclusive resort with tropical landscaping. It is close to Bayahibe, a resort town with shopping and dining. It is also the departure point for boat excursions to Isla Saona, part of the Parque National Cotubanama.

Bavaro features the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic. It’s north of the Punta Cana International Airport and on the Atlantic Ocean.

Along this strip of beach, often called the Coconut Coast, resorts are shoulder-to-shoulder. The white sand beaches are the draw though some resorts offer bigger beaches than others so research is key.

Bavaro is quite busy. The resorts tend to be louder and the beaches busier.

Best Beaches in Punta Cana

With about 200 beaches in the Dominican Republic, it can be hard to choose. DR boasts 25 Blue Flag Beaches (more than the U.S.), known for their conservation and recycling efforts.

Macao Beach –Known for its surfing area.

Bavaro Beach –This beach extends for 30 miles and features many all-inclusive resorts. It is a favorite.

Juanillo Beach- -Exceptionally wide beach with mature palm trees. Since there are fewer resorts and many are gated, this beach is less crowded.

Bayahibe Beach –Located in the village and a frequent departure point for excursions to Soana Island.

Note : Nude sunbathing isn’t a common in the Dominican Republic. Even topless sunbathing isn’t a thing in DR. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

Saona Island

Part of the Cotubanama National Park, Saona Island is a pristine tropical escape. With a lack of development, including hotels, it is an ideal day trip.

Christopher Columbus discovered the island and named it after a friend. It was the location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The easiest way to reach the island is via a catamaran tour. Most trips stop at Palmilla Swimming Area, a shallow area that adults can touch the bottom in the turquoise water.

Most trips depart from Bayahibe and take 8 to 10 hours. Lunch and drinks are usually included in the tour.

Popular Punta Cana Excursions

Arrange for a tour during your visit to the Dominican Republic to learn more about its agriculture and animals.

Feed a Spider Monkey.

Learn about the chocolate production.

Watch a cigar rolling.

Walk through a sugar cane field.

Take a Zipline through the tree canopy.

Learn about coffee production.

Is the Water Safe in the Dominican Republic

While visiting the Dominican Republic, drink bottled water. The tap water is NOT safe to drink. So drink bottled water exclusively during your visit. I even brush my teeth with bottled water or mouthwash. This is one of the Things to Know Before Visiting Punta Cana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stay away from the following:

  • Tap or well water
  • Ice made with tap or well water
  • Drinks made with tap or well water (such as reconstituted juice)
  • Unpasteurized milk

Complimentary bottled water should be available in your room during your entire stay. Water fountains are not the norm in the Dominican Republic.

What to Wear in the Caribbean

Need some help with what to wear? Here are all the best tips and products for your trip.

Beach Packing List

Liquor safety.

Practice some basic precautions during your stay. The drinking age in the Dominican Republic is 18.

  • Make sure all bottled beverages are sealed with their factory seals in your mini fridge.
  • Don’t drink from open liquor bottles in your room.
  • Watch bartenders make your beverages.
  • Before drinking, smell your cocktail.
  • Drink slowly.
  • Eat before and while you are drinking.
  • Drink bottled water while drinking alcohol.

Food Safety

According to the CDC, stay away from the following:

  • Food served at room temperature
  • Food from street vendors
  • Raw or soft-cooked (runny) eggs
  • Raw or undercooked (rare) meat or fish
  • Unwashed or unpeeled raw fruits and vegetables
  • Unpasteurized dairy products
  • ”Bushmeat” (monkeys, bats, or other wild game)

Insect Safety in DR

According to the CDC, protect yourself by doing the following:

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on your skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

I recommend the following product to treat your clothes before departure, available from Amazon.

Make an Appointment at Travel Clinic

I headed to CDC.gov for Caribbean travel information, including required immunizations. My family practitioner advised me to make an appointment at a travel clinic.

At the travel clinic, my nurse practitioner advised a Typhoid vaccine, along with Hepatitis A and a booster vaccine for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis since it had been five years since my last shot. I was covered for the MMR vaccine, or measles, mumps and rubella.

The nurse practitioner also discussed mosquito safety since dengue fever is sometimes an issue for the Caribbean. I packed a 3 oz. container of insect repellant and used it when I walked through a shady area and in the evenings.

Along with vaccines, she discussed traveler’s diarrhea (TD). She advised I start taking probiotics before and during my trip. I also drank a dose of Emergen-C daily, especially after long international flights. I packed some over-the-counter medications for TD symptoms since it’s the most common illness during travel.

Fear of TD–Traveler’s Diarrhea

I have a fear of TD. Who has time for that? I didn’t want to find a Dominican pharmacy, so I packed all the supplies I might need. Here’s what the CDC recommends.

  • Antiacid—like Tums
  • Pepto-Bismol tablets
  • Imodium tablets
  • Oral Rehydration Salts—available at REI
  • Prescription Antibiotics—prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner based on your itinerary.

If you get seasickness, here are the top tips and products to reduce the effects .

First Aid Supplies

Accidents happen so pack a basic first aid kit to be prepared, even for minor scrapes and blisters.

  • Pain Reliever
  • Motion Sickness pills, like non-drowsy Dramamine
  • Cough Drops
  • Cold Medication—I prefer a separate Day and Night version.
  • Anti-Histamine—like Benadryl
  • Triple antibiotic cream—like Neosporin
  • Anti-Itch Cream
  • Anti-septic wipes
  • Inspect Repellent

Restroom Supplies

When traveling away from resorts, pack some restroom supplies. You will need them outside restaurants and hotels.

  • Toilet paper, off the roll in a plastic bag
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Bleach wipes

Note: I left all medications in the original container to avoid issues with security or customs.

Jake Cronenworth’s grand slam lifts the Padres to a 6-2 win against the Reds

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jake Cronenworth hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning and Jurickson Profar had four hits for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 Wednesday to take two of three in the series.

Cronenworth hit his third career grand slam and the second for the Padres this season. It came after Tyler Wade opened the inning with a bunt single over the head of reliever Fernando Cruz (1-2), followed by Profar’s single and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s walk. Cronenworth connected to right on the first pitch he saw from Cruz.

Profar, re-signed in the offseason to a $1 million, one-year contract, extended his hitting streak to eight games. He had a two-run single in the fourth.

The Padres got six strong innings in a bounce-back performance from Joe Musgrove and ended a six-game homestand with two victories. They were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies and then lost the opener of this series to extend their season-high losing streak to five games.

“It’s huge, after a rough series to start the homestand and come back and beat a really good team in Cincinnati,” Cronenworth said.

He homered on a 94 mph four-seamer.

“Fastball in, trying to take a good swing and drive it to the middle of the field,” he said.

Until Cronenworth’s slam, the biggest moment of the game was when Reds center fielder Stuart Fairchild made a sensational leaping catch to rob Manny Machado of a three-run homer.

After Spencer Steer homered off Musgrove with two outs in the first, it looked as if the Padres would surge ahead on Machado’s drive to right-center off Graham Ashcraft. But Fairchild tracked down the ball, leaped to make the catch and slammed into the low fence, with his cap flying off. He regained his balance and threw the ball in to hold the runners at second and first. Ashcraft turned and raised his right index finger toward Fairchild as some Padres looked on in disbelief from the dugout.

The catch was reminiscent of the one San Diego native Adam Jones made to rob Machado of a home run in the 2017 World Baseball Classic at Petco Park. Then teammates with the Baltimore Orioles, Jones was playing for the United States and Machado was playing for the Dominican Republic.

Cronenworth’s slam made a winner of Enyel De Los Santos (1-1).

Steer’s homer was his fourth. Musgrove has allowed 10 homers, tied with teammate Michael King for the most in the majors. The native of suburban El Cajon gave up a career-high four homers in his previous start, a 9-3 loss to Philadelphia on Friday night.

San Diego took the lead on Profar’s two-run single to left with two outs in the third. The runs were unearned because of an error by first baseman Jeimer Candelario, who dropped the throw from second baseman Jonathan India on Jackson Merrill’s grounder.

It took the Reds just two batters to tie the game at 2. Santiago Espinal doubled to left leading off the fifth and scored on Candelario’s single to right.

Both starters went six innings. Musgrove allowed two runs and four hits while striking out nine and walking none. Ashcraft allowed two unearned runs and five hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.

“It felt good to have my normal stuff back,” Musgrove said. “I put a lot of work in this week. Maybe too much at times, but I felt good. I felt like I saw some of the things that we were hoping to see out there. My delivery felt good.

“The homer in the first inning had the feeling of it turning into another one of those outings, but my stuff felt good.”

Musgrove threw 87 pitches. He finished his outing with a perfect sixth, striking out his final two batters.

“If I can get through six and finish the way that I did, and not take a chance of running me back out there and having to pull me in the middle of the inning, I think that was probably the right move for me with where I’m at right now,” Musgrove said. “I feel like I was leaving on a strong note and I’ll just keep building on it.”

Said manager Mike Shildt: “It looked like Joe — controlling counts, a lot of sharpness to his pitches, velo up a tick. I liked what he was doing.”

Reds: RHP Hunter Greene (1-2, 3.63 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night in the opener of a home three-game series against Baltimore.

Padres: RHP Dylan Cease (3-2, 2.78) is scheduled to start Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Arizona. The Diamondbacks will go with RHP Zac Gallen (3-2, 3.38).
